Hard-rock phosphate was formerly the chief source of all phosphate in Florida. Its mining began as early as 1883 or 1884, reached a peak level in 1907 and ceased in 1966. Production began and ended in the Dunnellon area (Marion County). Nearly all the hard-rock was exported because its P205 value per unit weight is generally more concentrated than that of other phosphate rock. Maximum production, achieved in 1907, was greater than 600,000 tons; the total value for that year was more than $4,000,000. The Florida hard-rock phosphate, considered to be of middle Miocene to early Pliocene age, has an intermittent narrow, linear northwest-southeast trend. The Ocala uplift controls the phosphate distribution for more than 200 miles. Other known, isolated hard-rock areas appear to be related to minor folds on the Ocala uplift. The hard-rock phosphate deposits are a heterogeneous mass of sedimentary fluorapatite, chert and quartz with textures ranging in size from clay to boulder, and in thickness from 0 to 40 feet. Phosphate compounds, principally fertilizers, have been in oversupply since before 1968, but by the middle 1970's some experts forecast a supply-demand balance. A brighter future for exploitation of Florida hard-rock phosphate depends upon one or more of these factors: 1) depletion of present premium grades (74 percent BPL and above) of land-pebble; 2) cheaper electric power from nuclear generators for profitable electric furnace operation; 3) supply and price of sulfur; 4) manageable rail-water transportation costs; 5) development of less costly mining and separation methods; and 6) minimum competition from high-grade foreign phosphate.

Pillar design ought to be a matter of matching pillar strength against pillar loading conditions to come up with dimensions that will cause the pillar to behave as required - to stand forever, or for a limited time, or to fail in a controlled manner. But something has gone wrong in recent years, seriously wrong. Pillar design practices have departed from reality. The laboratory and computer have taken the place of the mind. If the mind is put to work and such pillar design practices are examined critically, it becomes obvious that they deal with conditions that do not exist in a real mine. Time, effort and money are wasted, and the end results are incorrect and misleading. These questionable pillar design practices have been passed on from generation to generation over the past 30 or 40 years. The hope here is that we can return to reality as soon as the questionable practices are generally recognized. We could then go back into the mines and define how pillars really work, and mining safety, efficiencies and costs should improve. Let us take a close look at current textbook design practices and compare them to real-life conditions. Common sense might then prevail. (At this time, we will consider only mine pillar design, but similar scrutiny should be applied to design criteria for width of openings, floor conditions and roof support systems.)

Introduction The Cove gold-silver deposit is located in Lander County, NV about 50 km (30 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit is in the north-central part of the Fish Creek Mountains within the McCoy mining district. Gold was first discovered in the McCoy district in 1914 by Joseph H. McCoy (Vanderburg, 1939). From 1928 to the early 1930s, minor production occurred from shallow underground workings. Total gold production was less than 311 kg (10,000 oz; Stager, 1977). The district was inactive until the mid-1960s when it was explored by Bear Creek Mining, Summa Corp., Houston Oil and Minerals Corp., Gold Fields, and Tenneco Minerals. Tenneco began a detailed reevaluation of the McCoy deposit in the fall of 1984. Tenneco's decision to place the deposit into production was based on a geological reserve of 8.7 t (280,000 oz) of gold (Kuyper, 1987). Subsequent exploration and development drilling of the McCoy skarn deposit has more than doubled the mineable skarn reserves to 19 t (615,000 oz) of gold. In September 1985, Tenneco began development work on the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The project is an open-pit, heap leach mine. The first gold was poured in April 1986. Echo Bay Mines acquired Tenneco's precious metals properties in October 1986. The mining operation and district exploration started by Tenneco is continuing under the Echo Bay's ownership. The Cove deposit was discovered in January 1987 and production began in February 1988. The deposit will begin as an open-pit, heap leach operation. It will be converted into an open-pit and underground mine with a 9-kt (10,000-stpd) mill. Geologic setting The Cove gold-silver deposit is situated on the east flank of the Fish Creek Range. Surface elevations range from 1460 to 1680 m (4800 to 5500 ft). The deposit is 1.6 km (1 mile) northeast of the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The Cove deposit is hosted by the Augusta Sequence of Triassic age. Three formations of the sequence are mineralized at the Cove. In ascending order they are the Favret, Panther Canyon, and Augusta Mountain formations. The Favret formation is a gray, locally silty limestone that is commonly fossiliferous. The base of the formation is not exposed. Exposed and drilled intervals are more than 60 m (200 ft) thick. Conformably overlying the Favret formation is the Panther Canyon formation. This formation is 215 m (700 ft) thick and consists of a siliclastic and carbonate sequence of conglomerate, quartzite (sandstone), mudstone, limestone, and dolomite. Auriferous sulfide ores often contain very finely disseminated gold and other precious metal particles inside the sulfide crystals. The encapsulation of precious metal particles gives rise to the refractory nature of such ores to current extraction methods. As a result, these fractions are frequently lost in the tailings. The purpose of this work was to investigate the feasibility of pretreating these refractory tailings with bioleaching before employing standard extraction techniques such as cyanidation. Leadville gold ore tailings containing auriferous pyrite were first concentrated by froth flotation. The pyrite concentrate was treated for different periods of time with 12 weeks adapted thiobacillus ferrooxidans before cyanide leaching. The bioleaching of the concentrate before cyanide leaching increased the gold extraction from 32% to 95% and that of silver from 48% to more than 98%.

Only South Africa can be considered in terms of resources of amphibole asbestos. There are two asbestos producing fields, one in the Northern Cape Province (producing only crocidolite), and one in the Eastern Transvaal (producing only amosite). This chapter discusses the banded ironstone sequence in which amphibole asbestos occurs, and the genesis of the fiber is briefly reviewed. Also, the properties and characteristics of amphibole asbestos are discussed and compared to those of chrysotile. Approximately 300 000 t of arnosite and crocidolite are produced annually. Crocidolite has a potential for a fivefold increase of production chat could be sustained beyond the year 2000. An estimate of the resources of the various producing fields in South Africa is made. The mining methods are also reviewed and evaluation techniques are discussed. The only two types of amphibole asbestos exploited at present in South Africa are amosite [the white colored amphibole asbestos) and crocidolite (the blue colored asbestos). As is well known, crocidolite has been mined in South Africa from the early part of this century, and amosite since the early 1930's. Since these dates, asbestos mining has developed into a significant mining industry. The annual production of crocidolite is approximately 170 000 to 200 000 t. and amosite production is in the region of 80 000 to 100 000 t. CLASSIFICATION OF AMPHIBOLE ASBESTOS Four types of amphibole asbestos are produced economically in the world today: (1) crocidolite, the fibrous equivalent of riebeckite, (2) arnosite, the fibrous equivalent of grunerite, (3) trernolite, and (4) anthophylite. The names trernolite and grunerite apply equally to the crystal and fibrous forms of these minerals. For comparison and clarification purposes, the six known varieties of asbestiform minerals known in the world are shown in Table 1. All the asbestos minerals were originally developed as cross fiber seams in veins or fractures, or were controlled by the lithology. Post- fiber effects caused slip, sheared, and folded fiber seams. Crocidolite and amosite occur in banded ironstone of early Proterozoic age of the Transvaal Supergroup. The fiber seams are developed in certain defined lithological units in the banded ironstone sequence. The lithological units have a remarkable lateral persistence with respect to their chemical nature and physical appearance. Vertically, the banded ironstone sequence displays a heterogeneous nature. Commercial Applications The features and properties that make amphibole asbestos commercially attractive are: 1) The long average length of the fibers is good for greater wet strength in composites. 2) The high tensile strength of crocidolite makes it superior to all other types of asbestos. 3) It is characterized by dispersion in most liquid media, particularly amosite in water. 4) Since the surface charge of amosite and crocidolite is negative, the fibers produce an open lattice work in water with a high bulk volume giving excellent filtration rates and rapid drainage in a wet asbestos cement mix. 5) The insulating properties of amphibole asbestos mats are still important, particularly in a corrosive environment, despite the introduction of many other synthetic insulating materials. 6) Corrosion resistance, particularly acid corrosion resistance. 7) Due to the high modulus of amphibole fibers, resins reinforced with these fibers exhibit

INTRODUCTION The state of the art of soft-ground tunneling was discussed in detail by the senior author at the 7th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering held in Mexico City in 1969. Little can be gained by repeating the information assembled at that time. Hence, in this report, only the briefest summary will be given of the overall state of the art and attention will be concentrated on trends and developments since 1969. A characteristic of recent developments is the continued trend toward use of shields and excavating machines. The implications of this trend with respect to design and construction, and particularly with respect to the treatment of unfavorable ground conditions, will be examined. Settlement associated with lost ground, a subject as old as tunneling itself, will be reviewed and methods will be considered for its reduction. Design of tunnel supports was discussed in detail in 1969 with respect to essentially rigid or essentially flexible types of linings. In this report, a definition of flexibility will be considered and design procedures suggested for linings of flexibility intermediate between the two extremes.

Machine breakdowns and maintenance delays are large contributors to lost production and increased operating costs in the mining industry. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the applications of expert system technology to diagnostic and predictive maintenance tor mining equipment. This will help increase mining productivity and decrease operating costs, by reducing the frequency of equipment failures and repair times. The Bureau has begun this effort by applying expert system techniques to the diagnosis of hydraulic system problems on a continuous mining machine. This paper discusses the development of the hydraulic diagnostic expert system.

The Mine safety and Health Administration (MSHA) formed the Mine Ventilation Bleeder and Gob Training Committee in 1993. This committee was charged with developing a training course designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of practical bleeder ventilation systems. The course will probably include a discussion on the theory behind bleeder system design, an in-depth look at the strengths and weaknesses of the basic bleeder system types, case studies, and a review of the systems currently in use. A database on active underground bituminous coal mines, gob areas, and the bleeder systems presently used was developed from questionnaires distributed to nine Coal Mine Safety and Health (CMS&H) districts. Representative systems were selected for thorough investigation to develop case studies. This paper introduces some of the material to be included in the course, including a description of basic bleeder system designs, a review of a portion of the database, and facts about the gob areas and bleeder systems investigated for the development of case studies.

SURFACE SUBSIDENCE IN MINING The consequences of subsidence are becoming progressively more serious as the consumption of an ever- increasing quantity of minerals conflicts with the needs of an expanding population for surface land area. The inevitable result will be an increase in the amount of land area on which undermining is restricted because surface subsidence must be prevented. Designation of land areas that may be undermined, provided that subsidence is controlled and kept within specified limits, also will increase. The decisions as to which land is to be used for urban, agricultural, or other purposes clearly involve considerations that go far beyond the scope of mining technology. Under the authority assigned to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) by the Organic Act (May 16, 1910) and its succeeding amendments and pursuant regulations (30 U.S.C. 1-1 1 ), the Bureau conducts scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and its related problems. Subsidence-control demonstrations that have been conducted under this authority include projects in Wyoming, West Virginia, Illinois, and the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The problenls for technology arc to devise methods for extracting minerals with controlled subsidence in varying geologic settings and for calculating or predicting the amount, extent, and characteristics of the subsidence that accompanies the extraction of our principal minerals mined by high-tonnage methods so that logical choices can be made from the possible alternative approaches. Where underground minerals and fuels are mined and removed, the voids that are created underground generate strong imbalanced stresses in the surrounding and overlying rock strata. The resulting readjustments in the rock masses may cause subsidence of the ground surface. Subsidence implies vertical collapse, because the most conspicuous component of movement is downward. However, the downward component is accompanied by differential horizontal strains that may be more damaging to man-made surface structure.; than the more apparent vertical displacements. SUBSIDENCE CONTROL The most widespread method of alleviating potential subsidence problems in undermined areas has been to backfill mine voids with mine refuse or some other in- expensive material that provides lateral support to the remaining mine pillars and vertical support to the mine roof and overburden. Most USBM backfilling work has been conducted jointly with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources in the anthracite region of northeastern Pennsylvania. These joint projects were conducted under the authority of the Anthracite Mine Drainage Control Act of July 15, 1955 (Public Law 84-162, as amended), and the Appalachian Regional Development Act of 1965 (Public Law 89-4. as amended). In addition to the Appalachian and mine-drainage projects, the Bureau has either conducted or participated in demonstration projects to develop the "pumped- slurry" method of backfilling mine voids. Three of these projects were conducted in Rock Springs, WY. The first was a field test of the pumped-slurry technique, conducted in 1970 under the combined participation of the City of Rock Springs, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Dowell Div. of the Dow Chemical Co., and USBM (Candeub, Fleissig, 1971). The objective was to demonstrate that a large quantity of sand could be hydraulically injected under pressure through a single borehole, and that filling of the mine voids would be essentially complete. In the earlier "blind-flushing" methods, involving sluicing material through boreholes by gravity, quantities per injection hole ranged from 15 to 765 m3 (20 to 1000 cu yd), and the mine voids were only partially filled. In the first test of the pumped-slurry method, approximately 14 900 m (19,500 cu yd) of sand were injected success- fully through a single borehole. Subsequent information obtained through 43 monitoring boreholes indicated that mine voids below 11 330 m2 (2.8 acres) had been filled. As a result of the successful initial test of the pumped-slurry process, USBM conducted additional backfilling demonstration projects using the new technique. The first full-scale demonstration was carried out in the Green Ridge section of Scranton, PA, between 1972 and 1974. This project proved the feasibility of using the new hydraulic-injection technique to back- fill dry mine voids, as well as flooded voids, and it demonstrated that crushed anthracite refuse could be used as easily as sand in the process. Stabilization was pro- vided for about 202 300 m2 (50 acres) of Scranton, having a population of approximately 1000. Additional demonstration projects at Rock Springs, WY, between 1973 and 1975, resulted in the stabilization of about 364 200 m2 (90 acres). The work was necessary to preserve the physical and economic well- being of the city, because there have been numerous occurrences of subsidence during recent years. A demonstration project completed in 1976 in Rock Springs brought the total stabilized area in that city to 647 500 m2 (160 acres). At a cost of about $3,000,000, a population estimated at 7000 persons and property values exceeding $18,000,000 were protected. Presently. USBM is participating in subsidence- control projects involving backfilling in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and West Virginia. Eleven demonstration projects were in progress by USBM in 1977-eight in the Pennsylvania anthracite region and three in bituminous areas of West Virginia (one) and Illinois (two). The estimated total property value is over $100,500,000, and the total cost of the projects is expected to be nearly $20,000,000. The demonstration projects are designed to adapt the pumped-slurry technique to a variety of subsurface conditions, to increase efficiency, and to reduce costs.

An erector transporter (ET) has been designed and built to lift, carry and erect heavy machinery components, in particular the components of a 7.6 m diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM), within the access tunnels of a submarine coal mine in Eastern Canada. The ET is capable of manoeuvring within a 7.6 m tunnel while precisely positioning components as large as 6 m in diameter and weighing up to 27 tonnes each. The unit can negotiate 20% grades while carrying loads of 30 tonnes. The major design features, verification tests and performance trial results are presented. The versatility of the ET is such that many other applications are possible.

This paper outlines the chance constrained binary integer program developed by the author in his doctoral dissertation at Columbia University, New York, 1973. The optimum planning of a mining program involves the determination of a production schedule which maximizes the net present value of the mining property. The actual mining process has an inherent stochastic and discrete nature. In particular, the demand for the mined product and the grade of the mineralized material in the ore are the two most important stochastic mining variables. The decision to mine or not to mine any block of a mining property is a binary integer variable. This paper outlines the formulation of pit production scheduling problem as a chance constrained binary integer program. The deterministic equivalents of these chance constraints are nonlinear in binary variables which have subsequently been linearized. The planned objective is to meet with a stipulated high degree of reliability, all the random demands as they materialize with a random supply of the commodity being marketed as determined by the eventuating random grade values of the exposed ore blocks and the mining system's production constraints such that the discounted total production costs over the entire planning horizon are minimized or the profits maximized. The emerging surface of the mine in each scheduling period is determined by the values taken by the binary decision variable associated with each block of material in each scheduling period.

Surface subsidence events induced by underground longwall coal-mining operations can cause various disturbances to surface structures, ranging from integrity and stability to functionality problems. Highway bridges, as a kind of special road construction that can only tolerate smaller movements and deformations than road pavements, are particularly susceptible to severe influence caused by subsidence-induced ground movements and deformations. However, based on accurate subsidence prediction and correct influence assessments, efficient and effective mitigation and remediation measures can be designed and implemented to ensure the continuous service of bridges, safety of travelers, and smooth mining operations. In this paper, based on the predicted final and dynamic surface movements and deformations, the techniques to assess subsidence influence on the integrity, stability and functionality of bridge structures (such as decks, beams and abutments) are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect bridge structures are recommended, along with an actual application case.

Activated bleaching clays, so called because of their ability to remove color bodies from bleach fats and oils, are produced from clays of bentonitic origin. Activation is achieved by subjecting these clays to physical or chemical alteration to increase selective sorption capacities (1) . The future of activated bleaching clays depends upon the ability of producers to recognize the new areas of applications which are arising, and their skill in developing sophisticated active clays to meet new and stringent requirements. The major portion of activated bentonites are produced for decolorization of oils. New techniques of activation will improve these clays for broader spectrum use. General properties expected to result from present activation methods are: 1. Modification of hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties and increased available surface area in non-aqueous systems, thereby improving sorption capacity and ability to remove color bodies from oils. The following additional properties will be expected from future activated clays: 2. High purity of the active clay with interfering impurities totally removed. 3. Increased selective sorption capacity in aqueous systems. 4. Selective chemical reactivity, such as oxidation or hydrolysis. This property is required for removing

The mineral industry uses significant amounts of water in processing. Thus, sustainable practices with the processing of ores are of critical importance. An impact tester was used to measure the adhesion force between particles and a glass disk [1,2]. A removal force was caused by the impact of the disk/particle containing a puck with a stopper. Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory [3] was used to determine the interfacial energy between the particles and the substrate. Capillary condensation of water can occur between the particle and surfaces in humid environments. The adhesion of particles on rough surfaces has been studied previously [4-10]. The research presented herein combines both variables to separate particle types with minimal water usage.

Innovative solution management is being used at Coeur-Rochester Inc. to increase bullion production and decrease overall costs. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap that increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flow rate. Silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months to enhance the silver extraction rate. The Coeur-Rochester silver and gold mine, located in central Nevada, is an open pit, heap leach operation that has been in production since late summer of 1986. The facility produces about 15.4 kt/d (17,000 stpd) of -13 mm (-0.5 in.) ore to a leach area consisting of more than 37 hm2 (4 million sq ft) of 80 ml HDPE liner. Crushing is accomplished with a 1220x 1520-mm (48- x 60-in.) jaw crusher. This is followed by a single 2.1-m (7-ft) standard cone crusher and is completed with four 2.1 m (7 ft) short-head cone crushers. Agglomeration is not required for the crushed ore, which contains less than 10% -75. µm (-200 mesh) material. The ore contains 53 g/t (1. 55 oz per st) silver and 0.377 g/t (0.011 oz per st) gold. It is end dumped over previously leached material, leveled, and then ripped with a bulldozer. Drip emitters at 810 mm (32 in.) spacings on 910 mm (36 in.) centers are used to apply barren solution to the heap. A portion of the emitter lines are buried I m (3 ft) deep during the winter months and are placed on the surface the remainder of the year. The leach solution contains 0.75 g/L (750 ppm) sodium cyanide solution at a pH of 10.5 - 11. Dissolved oxygen averages 8 ppm in the pregnant solution. Cyanide consumption for the ore to date is just under 0.2 kg/t (0.4 lb per st). The pH control is accomplished by adding I kg/t (2.0 lb per st) 0-10 mm (-0.4 in.) pebble lime to the ore at the tertiary crusher. Dramatical increase in the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has led to the climate change, which poses a significant threat to human life on Earth. CO2 sequestration via mineral carbonation is the one of the most effective method for mitigating global warming, and is the only way that could store CO2 permanently. In recent years, integrating mineral carbonation via ultramafic mine deposit has received significant attention due to its high potentiality towards commercial application. This review compiles the work conducted by various researchers over the last few years on integrated mineral carbonation processes in mining industry, which use the mine waste materials as CO2 feedstock for mineral carbonation. This paper initially introduces the basic theory of mineral carbonation, with a brief description of various techniques that enhance the rate of mineral carbonation. The enhanced mineral carbonation strategies include pre-treatment of feedstock by thermal, chemical and mechanical activation, and carbonation in a direct or indirect carbonation routes under gas/solid phase or aqueous phase. This paper then introduces the scope of application of integrated mineral carbonation. This includes the types of mine suitable for integrated mineral carbonation, the properties of mine waste materials preferable for CO2 sequestration, and the worldwide locations potentially viable for integrated mineral carbonation. Moreover, this paper critically reviews and discusses the integrated mineral carbonation process in mining industry. The integrated mineral carbonation processes include modified passive carbonation techniques at tailing dams, and ex-situ carbonation routes using fresh tailings. The focus of the discussions is the role of reaction condition on the carbonation efficiency of mine waste with various mineralogy, and the drawback of each integrated mineral carbonation process. All the discussions lead to the suggestions on the technology improvement in the integrated mineral carbonation process. Finally, this paper reviews the economical assessments on the existing integrated mineral carbonation process. Literature to date indicates that the value-add by-products (i.e. recovered metals, valuable carbonated products) play an important role in commercialization of an integrated mineral carbonation process.

Field investigations and office studies were used to develop criteria and cost parameters related to the geologic aspects of the proposed project. These results were employed in optimization of layouts and comparison of alternative schemes, leading to selection of the recommended program. Study of project features included the development of subsurface shafts, tunnels, and mined storage areas, and the utilization of existing surface quarries. These project features were proposed for construction within the bedrock units underlying Chicago. Principal geologic considerations included bedrock structure, stratigraphic sequence of units, rock competence and uniformity, and requirements for aquifer protection. All geologic factors were interrelated with other project considerations such as surface hydrology, hydraulics, and urban setting. Data for analyses was acquired through an exploration program conducted intermittently between 1967 and 1971, in addition to that already available through numerous explorations and well constructions in the project area. The exploration program included seismic surveying, core drilling, geophysical borehole logging, and water pressure testing of boreholes, and water well drilling and testing. Extensive laboratory tests were conducted on core samples. The data formed the basis of studies enabling the formulation of preliminary design and siting criteria resulting in construction cost evaluation.

The Bureau of Mines measured respirable dust emission rates from overburden drilling at a surface coal mine and the transport of this dust to downwind locations. The emission rates were estimated by using multiple gravimetric dust samplers mounted on a cross-shaped tripod located immediately downwind of the drill. The transport of this dust was measured at more distant downwind locations by a combination of respirable gravimetric sampling and integrated bag sampling of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), which was used as a tracer gas. Two modes of sampling were used: (1) At five sampling locations arranged in a semicircle around the drill. The radius of this arc ranged from 15.85 m (52 ft) to 71.32 m (234 ft). (2) In-line sampling at downwind locations with samplers located at intervals of either 10.67 m (35 ft) or 15.24 m (50 ft) for a total distance of 76.20 m (250 ft). Samples were taken 1 .22 m to 1.52 m (4 to 5 ft) above ground level. Test results for the semicircular test arrangements showed that at any downwind location, the maximum contribution of respirable dust due specifically to the drilling operation was 42%; the average for eight tests was 13.6%. In general, there was no correlation between the downwind distance of this maximum contribution and the maximum contribution itself because of changing wind direction. Test results for the in-line arrangements indicated that the transport of the dust from the drilling operation usually decreases rapidly with distance and that, even though the drill dust may produce significant health hazards for the drill operator and drill helper (or other personnel in the immediate vicinity), the exposure of downwind personnel to drill-generated dust may not be a significant problem.

Mechanical mining is steadily gaining usage in the mining industry. A variety of machines currently finds employment: tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, continuous miners, surface miners, and augers. These machines have advantages compared to drill and blast mining methods, including increased safety, lower cost, uniform muck size, and accurately sized openings. A century of experience with mechanical methods has already paid dividends to the coal industry. Current trends guarantee eventual development of true general-purpose hardrock mechanical mining machines. Mechanical miners will become integrated mining systems and will determine the design of mines, when several significant challenges have been met.

The logic and importance of marketing in the industrial minerals industry is generally recognized by those of us intimately involved in this industry. The illogical instances where marketing is ignored in evaluating projects or poorly implemented in operations are also well known. The interplay between these two extremes is interesting territory and is explored commencing with a logical progression of a metal mine that became an industrial minerals mine and ending with the most illogical and failure-prone decision common to the minerals industry today. This paper will demonstrate how: 1. A logical progression of marketing expertise can result in previously unseen benefits to a minerals venture. 2. Logic can turn to illogic due to market conditions and price fluctuations. 3. How operations can turn marketing logic into illogical results. 4. Short term "logic" is often illogical.
