Problems of marketing industrial minerals to chemical manufacturers are manifold. In addition to the difficulty of establishing demarcation lines between "crude" and "processed" industrial (nonmetallic) minerals, and "industrial mineral compounds" further uncertainty exists because some chemical manufacturers do not talk the same language as the industrial mineral producer. For example, paint technologists use "rutile" and "anatase" to describe highly refined chemical compounds. The earth scientists use these terms to describe naturally occurring minerals. Further, marketing research problems are intensified because of the overlapping data of the Standard Industrial Classifications (SIC) groups, and the inexactness of "Chemical Industry," "Chemical and Allied Products Industries," and "Chemical Process Industries," which are widely variable in meaning but are often used interchangeably. Bureau of Mines information Circular 8244, "Minerals for Chemical Manufacturing," was the out¬growth of an attempt to unravel some of the problems caused by overlap of statistical data compared with actual industry practices. Using this study as a base, specific industrial mineral applications of some important sub-industry groups were analyzed for the; California chemical industry. Differences between local and national practices were compared. Practices usually differed, depending on cost and availability of alternate minerals, climate, idiosyncrasies, local regulations, and other conditions. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8260, "Mineral Fillers for the California Pesticides Industry," is the first such analysis of, a sub-industry group. Other such studies are underway. Obtaining national data is easy, but to be able to compile meaningful information which can be revealed on a regional and State basis generally is difficult and often impossible. This paper will briefly emphasize some of the industrial mineral problems encountered, and bring out the needs and benefits being derived through the continued cooperation of authoritative officials concerned with supply and consumption of industrial minerals in government and industry.

Fortunately, few mining professionals have dealt with what all mining professionals fear---a mine disaster. Unfortunately, many have dealt with ?accidents? which may or may not claim lives but nevertheless rise to the level of a ?disaster? given the fallout of liability and litigation in today?s society.1 The undersigned authors published an article some ten years ago regarding crisis management2 based upon their collective first-hand experiences in actual disasters to that point in history. Unfortunately, disasters have occurred since that time, prompting legislation, and a fresh analysis and expansion of those basic principles is certainly in order. Without question, no two disasters are ever alike, yet general guidelines for forming an effective plan of action can be formulated?and if a mining operation is to have any chance of survival after a disaster, such a plan is vital. The primary concern as any disaster evolves remains as stated a 2003 SME article3--the protection of human life. From that point, the focus moves to any assistance that may be needed given the magnitude of the situation. Permeating throughout this process is "damage control." The first step in dealing with a disaster, however, begins long before any threat of danger arises?formulation and implementation of an Emergency Response Plan.

"Controlled recirculation may be considered as a beneficial means in mines of cold climate, where heating of air is required, and in deep or extensive mines, where cooling of air is required. Controlled recirculation can be designed by proper sizing of the booster fans with respect to main fan. Intuitively, it seems that the buildup of methane at the face will cease when a steady state condition is attained, and also that, at that same time, the maximum concentration at the face will remain same as in the return air. This supposition is proved by mathematical analysis that considers uniform mixing of methane in air in successive cycles of recirculation. This study includes two scenarios to show the effect of controlled recirculation on methane concentration in a sample network. Firstly, when recirculation crosscut exists near the working face; secondly, when recirculation crosscut exists away from the working face. The later scenario shows lesser buildup of methane concentration than the former one. INTRODUCTION The controlled recirculation is designed purposefully to allow a partial fraction of used air that increases the air velocity due to increased quantity of air and consequently allows effective dilution of contaminants to improve local ventilation condition at the working face. It can be designed by proper sizing of booster fan with respect to main fan in a ventilation network. Controlled recirculation may be categorized as crosscut, in-line or combined system based upon the configuration of the booster fan locations in a district ventilation network. Research on controlled recirculation has shown numerous benefits of controlled recirculation especially in deep or extensive underground mines, where further heating or cooling is required (Calizaya 1990; McPherson 1993 and Jones, 1987). However, fear of buildup of concentration has misled the mining communities to view the controlled recirculation as a hazard and deprived the mining industry to derive benefits from recirculation. This paper will discuss bentonite deposits in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The discussion will be re¬stricted to a review of the so-called calcium or non-swelling bentonites. In other words the exchangeable cation is calcium. The term "bentonite" is used to describe a clay material, composed essentially of the clay mineral montmorillonite. In addition, bentonites may contain various impurities such as glass shards, feldspar, quartz, muscovite and biotite mica, glauconite, pyrite, hydrated iron oxide, gypsum, organic material, etc, Most of the southern calcium bentonites contain at least 70% montmorillonite, Bentonite as mined may range in color from dark grayish greens through various shades of grays, reds, yellows and browns to nearly white. It is normally massive and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. When air dried, closely spaced shrinkage fractures occur. Moist bentonite has a soapy feel, with little or no obvious "grit". Bentonite deposits were first discovered in Mississippi about 1925, in southern Monroe County. During the thirties and early 1940's, deposits were identified in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Perhaps the earliest production of southern bentonite was from a deposit in the valley of the Tombigdee River, south of Jackson, Alabama in 1936. Production commenced in Mississippi during the latter part of 1938 at Pontotoc. The growth and development of the bentonite industry in the southern United States owes its beginning to three events. "With the aim to mitigate excavation risks and reduce the costs caused by tunnel boring machine (TBM) stoppage when tunneling under uncertain soil conditions, prediction ahead of the tunnel face has become an increasing interest in the tunneling community. Our research topic is concerned with developing effective concepts for nondestructive identification of geological anomalies ahead of the tunnel face by waveform inversion of reflected tunnel seismic waves. The authors demonstrate that this new technique is promising in providing tunnel engineers with an accurate image of the geological situation that the TBM is going to encounter thanks to the waveforms’ rich information about the geological structure that affects propagation, reflection/refraction and mode conversion behavior of the elastic waves. By setting up a 2-dimensional numerical model for simulation of tunnel seismic wave propagation influenced by a dip layer change ahead of the tunnel face, the authors show that the waveform misfit to be minimized by the inversion process is highly multimodal and therefore propose a hybrid stochastic optimization method that can quickly and robustly converge to the global minimum. DEVELOPMENTS IN TUNNEL ADVANCE EXPLORATION Conventional site investigation by drilling boreholes helps to draw a general image of geological structures along the borehole axes but that image is likely to misrepresent the detailed geological structure due to limited sampled locations. Due to high costs and restricted boring space which deep tunneling and tunneling under urban areas encounter, many industrial and academic research groups have had great interest in developing nondestructive ahead of the tunnel face prediction systems. That means only excitation sources and receiving sensors, which are usually placed on the ground surface or on the side walls or on the cutter head of the TBM, are used for acquisition of the measurement data. The recorded signals in the form of seismic or electromagnetic/ electrical waves, which travel through the geological structure or are reflected back from it, hold the signature of the geological structure of concern, such as geological layer changes, fault zones, erratic rocks, boulders, construction remnants, etc., and therefore can be used to reconstruct the spatial and material properties of those hidden geological structures. Most common nondestructive ahead-of-tunnel investigation systems to date are based on interpretation of reflected elastic/ acoustic waves (seismic waves) and analysis of electromagnetic/ electrical resistivity signals (Mooney et al. 2012). However, due to insufficient penetration depth and spread of signals generated by radar and geoelectric sources, the use of seismic waves for ahead of the tunnel face prediction (tunnel reconnaissance) is more preferable (Kneib et al. 2000; Bohlen et al. 2007)."

Virtually all industries use sulphur in some form. About half of the world's production is used in the production of fertilizers. Sulphur is produced in one form or another in over sixty countries in the world. The major producing countries, in order of importance, are: U.S.A., Canada, U.S.S.R., Poland, Japan, France, Mexico, and Spain. Canada is the largest exporter of sulphur presently supplying about 30% of the world elemental sulphur export trade. It has held this position since 1968. World sulphur resources are virtually unlimited. Future world competition will come from Iraq and other Middle East countries as well as Central and South America.

The MODSIM mineral processing plant simulator is used to find optimal combinations of target separation specific gravities in a typical modem coal washing plant. A plant that is set up with these optimal targets can deliver up to 10% more yield at the same ash content as the same plant set up with separation targets chosen by conventional methods. MODSIM is the only simulator currently available that can simulate the liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter during open-and closed-circuit grinding operations. The simulator can therefore be used to assess the benefits of grinding operations in the flowsheet.

It is the responsibility of educators to look ahead and prepare young engineers and scientists to cope with industrial and social problems of the future. We are faced with a review of history as well as prophesy of the future. The mining industry exists in a "bubble" with little interaction or communication with the outside. This isolation must be broken down if the industry is to survive in the U.S. and Canada. The ability to communicate with the general public and public officials is essential. Many changes are occurring that will require readjustments in technology and staffing. Aging population will result in raising retirement and increasing available workforce. This may force shorter working weeks to supply additional jobs. Environmental concerns will likely direct more attention not only to these concerns during mining, but to planning for post-mining land usage. Retraining and up-dating educational programs are required to cope with these changes.

A common belief among Itlnl.ng operators today is that computer based truck m:mitoring and dispatching systems are only applicable to, or affordable by, very large scale open pit mines. Before the advent of microcomputer technology this belief was generally a valid one. Microcomputer technology as it currently exists has reached a high level of sophistication and capability, rapidly approaching that of the minicomputer standard. When coupled with reliable software and data communications packages, it now provides the means to make truck monitoring and dispatching a viable and attractive management aid to mines of all sizes. This paper briefly addresses the evolution and current state of computer truck dispatching and examines a microcomputer based system in this context. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach to truck dispatching a recent installation in a medium sized mine is presented. Preliminary field data from the case mine are presented to illustrate the methodology.

The use of a woven wire-mesh screen as part of a flooded-bed dust-scrubbing system is very popular in the underground coal mining industry. It is used in combination with a demister (mist eliminator) to remove dust from the dust-laden air. A study was conducted to measure the pressure drop across a flooded-bed wire-mesh screen at different airflow rates in onephase (dry) and two-phase (wet) conditions. Two empirical relationships between pressure drop and air velocity were developed for dry and wet conditions, respectively. In both cases, the form of the empirical relationships was found to be similar to relationships given by Sabri Ergun for high velocity non-Darcy single and multi-phase flow through porous media. The experiments were repeated on a reduced-scale model of the wire-mesh screen, and the pressure-velocity relationships obtained from the full-scale prototype experiments were tested. The test results show validation of the full-scale empirical formulas on the small-scale model with an insignificant variation. This paper presents the empirical equations for pressure drop across the wire-mesh screen in dry and wet conditions. Researchers can use these equations as a tool to predict total pressure drops for wire-mesh screens of different scale sizes.

Early in the 60's the author served as Chairman of the Engineering Foundation's Coordinating Committee on Air Pollution Research. One of our objectives was the development of a study on the measurement of stack emissions. Three publications of the Foundation resulted from these efforts to focus attention on the stack sampling problem.1,2,3 Two of these were annotated bibliographies covering 197 references. The third reported the results of a workshop meeting at which some 21 individuals from research institutes, industry and government discussed the possible and probable areas of research that would add to or increase the ease, precision and utility of sampling gaseous and particulate matter emitted from stacks. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has had in its Power Test Codes a Standard Code for Determining the Dust Concentration in a Gas stream4 since 1941, The American Industrial Hygiene Association has published, in its Air Pollution Manual,5 a Section on Stack Sampling. Industry and regulatory agency requirements for stack sampling have utilized some modification of the alternatives in methodology. There has been ho single guide to stack sampling that met the needs of those who have the need to know.

Powered haulage continues to be a large safety concern for the mining industry, accounting for approximately 50%of the mining fatal accidents every year. Among these fatal accidents, haul-truck-related accidents are the most common, with 6 of 28 and 6 of 27 fatal accidents occurring in 2017 and 2018, respectively. To better understand why these accidents continue to occur and what can be done to prevent them, researchers reviewed the 91 haul-truck-related fatal accidents that occurred in the USA from 2005 to 2018 and performed bow-tie analyses using the final reports published by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The analyses explore the context of the accidents with a focus on the initiating event, event outcome, hazards present, and possible preventative and mitigative controls. Overall, the vast majority of the accidents resulted in a haul truck colliding with the environment, and the majority of these events were initiated by loss of situational awareness or loss of control. The majority of the hazards were related to design and organizational controls. The results of this study suggest a need to investigate operator decision-making and organizational controls and to focus on improving design and operation controls such as mine design and operational procedures.

The United States has the largest total (364 billion metric tons) and recoverable (182 billion metric tons) coal reserves in the world.1 However, progressive coal utilization in this country has been hampered by environmental constraints, such as restrictions on sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate emissions. New technologies are being pursued both to appease these environmental concerns and improve economic performance and process efficiency. These technologies, however, have not reached the level of effectiveness required for optimum operation. If more stringent emission standards are imposed, it is likely that the coal industry, and the industrial and utility sectors will look increasingly toward the successful development of new and advanced coal cleaning technologies in order to continue and promote the use of coal in this country. The EPA New Source Performance Standards In 1979, the Environmental Protection Agency in response to the amendments to the Clean Air Act of 1977 issued new source performance standards (NSPS) for utility and industrial boilers. The NSPS set emission standards for sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulates affecting boilers of 250 MM Btu per hour heat input or 'greater that started construction after September 1978. Plants starting construction or in operation before September 1978 remained subject to the provisions of the regulations promulgated in 1971, i.e., SO2 emissions of 1.2 15/MM Btu. The NSPS for SO2 emissions provides a sliding scale for SO2 reduction depending on the sulfur content of the run-of-mine coal, with an upper limit of 1.2 lb of SO2 per million Btu and a minimum emission level based on 70% SO2 removal. Table 1 summarizes the EPA NSPS for SO2 emission standards.

The new combination gypsum plaster and gypsum wallboard plant of Compania Industrial Kaiser S.A., the first of its kind in Mexico went into production in April of 1969. This was approximately fourteen months from the signing of the formal order for the plant and equipment. Compania Industrial Kaiser S.A. is an affiliate of the Kaiser Gypsum Company in the United States and will market practically the same line of products and to the same standards as those produced in American plants. Located in the City of Puebla, the plant will readily service the major Mexican sales areas. It is approximately 85 miles away from Mexico City on a modern, four-lane, divided highway and distribution to other major consumer areas can be readily effected by the use of a good highway system, as well as, by rail. This, plant is the, sixteenth Gypsum Wallboard Mill supplied abroad by my company, United States Wallboard Machinery Company. Other installations are in Australia, New Zealand, Chile, England, Scotland, Ireland, Finland, South Africa, Latvia and Germany. Two new mills are on order; a small unit for Brazil and a comparatively large unit for New Zealand. All these mills have one thing in common with plants in the United States and Canada; they are equipped with standard, time-proven and tested equipment and they are designed in accor¬dance with the latest engineering thinking in order to produce efficiently, the highest quality product at lowest cost. They differ generally in the size of plant, the factors that brought them into being and in the market that they supply. I believe that these differences will be of interest to you.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) conducted underground evaluations in an attempt to quantify respirable rock dust generation when using an untreated rock dust and a rock dust treated with an anti-caking additive. Using PDM 3600s and 3700s, these evaluations measured respirable rock dust levels arising from a flinger-type application of rock dust on rib and roof surfaces. Rock dust with a majority of the respirable component removed was also applied in NIOSH’s Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) using a bantam duster. The respirable dust measurements obtained downwind from both of these tests are presented and discussed. This testing did not measure miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust under acceptable mining practices, but indicates the need for effective continuous administrative controls to be exercised when rock dusting to minimize the measured amount of rock dust in the sampling device. INTRODUCTION Two factors have combined to renew concern regarding respirable dust measurements and compliance. This renewed recognition is due to two regulations that have modified operators’ rock dust schedules. First, the 80% incombustible requirement in intake entries has increased both on-section and outby-the-section rock dusting. Secondly, the recent respirable dust regulation change that has increased the number of respirable dust samples taken per sampling cycle. Previously, when only 5 samples were needed bi-monthly, rock dusting could be scheduled to not interfere with the respirable dust sampling schedule. The significant number of samples now required under new regulations combined with the need to maintain 80% total incombustible content in active mining areas require the schedules for respirable dust sampling and rock dusting to intermix. This raises concerns about the amount of rock dust that potentially is included in the sampler weight gain. Additionally, the respirable dust maximum was lowered from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 (effective August 1, 2016) increasing concern that rock dust contamination may be an issue. Currently, the acceptable practice is to apply administrative controls such as keeping the miners upwind during rock dust application or to schedule rock dusting during a maintenance shift when the number of miners present is lower. NIOSH’s research examining the quality of rock dust has led to the development of hydrophobic rock dusts."

Vertical magnetic surveys have been made over about 3, 150 miles of the crystalline area of east-central Alabama. A contour map (100-gamma interval) showing regional magnetic anomalies has been prepared (scale 1:250,000) from data points located at quarter-mile intervals on all public roads. Small one- and two-station anomalies were eliminated, leaving only areally extensive anomaly features associated with regional geology. The regional gradient was "filtered" from the basic data and the resulting magnetic configuration compared to the regional geology. Regional lines of vertical magnetic intensity trend northeast and follow the structural framework of the area. Correlations can be made between a large number of geologic and magnetic features. The strongest regional anomalies are associated with the Goat Rock, Bartletts Ferry, Towaliga, and Brevard fault structures. The Inner Piedmont area is characterized by a broad regional high. The magnetic values of the northern Alabama Piedmont grades gently northwestward, disrupted occasionally by elongate highs and lows associated with amphibolites or granites. Scattered throughout the Piedmont are anomalous areas of high magnetic intensity; some are related to magnetic-bearing rocks, and some Indicate possible mineralization. The standard test methods used to determine the pyrite content of coal and mineral wastes, and their propensity to release acidic drainage, are critically reviewed. In addition to analysis of total sulfur by combustion, test methods using selective oxidation of pyrite by HNO3 and H2O2 are available. The oxidation kinetics of pyrite vary appreciably from sample to sample, and it is difficult to ascertain whether complete dissolution has occurred in heterogeneous materials. The reliability, reproducibility and suitability of different standard test methods were studied, using well characterized ore and coal pyrite samples. The kinetics of pyrite dissolution were also investigated. The results are discussed in terms of the fundamental chemical and physical characteristics of each sample, and the implications for waste characterization are considered.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, “I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated” (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.
