The use of a woven wire-mesh screen as part of a flooded-bed dust-scrubbing system is very popular in the underground coal mining industry. It is used in combination with a demister (mist eliminator) to remove dust from the dust-laden air. A study was conducted to measure the pressure drop across a flooded-bed wire-mesh screen at different airflow rates in onephase (dry) and two-phase (wet) conditions. Two empirical relationships between pressure drop and air velocity were developed for dry and wet conditions, respectively. In both cases, the form of the empirical relationships was found to be similar to relationships given by Sabri Ergun for high velocity non-Darcy single and multi-phase flow through porous media. The experiments were repeated on a reduced-scale model of the wire-mesh screen, and the pressure-velocity relationships obtained from the full-scale prototype experiments were tested. The test results show validation of the full-scale empirical formulas on the small-scale model with an insignificant variation. This paper presents the empirical equations for pressure drop across the wire-mesh screen in dry and wet conditions. Researchers can use these equations as a tool to predict total pressure drops for wire-mesh screens of different scale sizes.

"Controlled recirculation may be considered as a beneficial means in mines of cold climate, where heating of air is required, and in deep or extensive mines, where cooling of air is required. Controlled recirculation can be designed by proper sizing of the booster fans with respect to main fan. Intuitively, it seems that the buildup of methane at the face will cease when a steady state condition is attained, and also that, at that same time, the maximum concentration at the face will remain same as in the return air. This supposition is proved by mathematical analysis that considers uniform mixing of methane in air in successive cycles of recirculation. This study includes two scenarios to show the effect of controlled recirculation on methane concentration in a sample network. Firstly, when recirculation crosscut exists near the working face; secondly, when recirculation crosscut exists away from the working face. The later scenario shows lesser buildup of methane concentration than the former one. INTRODUCTION The controlled recirculation is designed purposefully to allow a partial fraction of used air that increases the air velocity due to increased quantity of air and consequently allows effective dilution of contaminants to improve local ventilation condition at the working face. It can be designed by proper sizing of booster fan with respect to main fan in a ventilation network. Controlled recirculation may be categorized as crosscut, in-line or combined system based upon the configuration of the booster fan locations in a district ventilation network. Research on controlled recirculation has shown numerous benefits of controlled recirculation especially in deep or extensive underground mines, where further heating or cooling is required (Calizaya 1990; McPherson 1993 and Jones, 1987). The MODSIM mineral processing plant simulator is used to find optimal combinations of target separation specific gravities in a typical modem coal washing plant. A plant that is set up with these optimal targets can deliver up to 10% more yield at the same ash content as the same plant set up with separation targets chosen by conventional methods. MODSIM is the only simulator currently available that can simulate the liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter during open-and closed-circuit grinding operations. The simulator can therefore be used to assess the benefits of grinding operations in the flowsheet.

Early in the 60's the author served as Chairman of the Engineering Foundation's Coordinating Committee on Air Pollution Research. One of our objectives was the development of a study on the measurement of stack emissions. Three publications of the Foundation resulted from these efforts to focus attention on the stack sampling problem.1,2,3 Two of these were annotated bibliographies covering 197 references. The third reported the results of a workshop meeting at which some 21 individuals from research institutes, industry and government discussed the possible and probable areas of research that would add to or increase the ease, precision and utility of sampling gaseous and particulate matter emitted from stacks. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has had in its Power Test Codes a Standard Code for Determining the Dust Concentration in a Gas stream4 since 1941, The American Industrial Hygiene Association has published, in its Air Pollution Manual,5 a Section on Stack Sampling. Industry and regulatory agency requirements for stack sampling have utilized some modification of the alternatives in methodology. Coal refuse slurries stored in tailings impoundments can potentially lead to environmental concerns such as effluent seepage, property devaluation, and in extreme cases, dam failures. Pressure filtration offers an opportunity to reduce the impoundment requirements by providing significantly drier solids. A full-factorial design was used to study the effects of temperature and pH on dewatering a refuse slurry obtained from a coal preparation facility in Pennsylvania, USA. The experimental results indicated a strong effect of temperature on cake moisture as the cake moisture after about 2800 s was 22% at 43 °C and only 36% at 10 °C for tests conducted at pH 3. ANOVA results confirmed the statistical significance of pH, temperature, and their interaction effect. Also, the results showed no significant differences between the tests conducted near neutral and alkaline pH values at low and ambient temperatures. On the other hand, Tukey’s test indicated higher reductions in cake moisture at higher temperatures for lower pH values. This study affirms the need to monitor and control the pressure filtration process as throughput could significantly vary with changes in temperature and slurry conditions.

The standard test methods used to determine the pyrite content of coal and mineral wastes, and their propensity to release acidic drainage, are critically reviewed. In addition to analysis of total sulfur by combustion, test methods using selective oxidation of pyrite by HNO3 and H2O2 are available. The oxidation kinetics of pyrite vary appreciably from sample to sample, and it is difficult to ascertain whether complete dissolution has occurred in heterogeneous materials. The reliability, reproducibility and suitability of different standard test methods were studied, using well characterized ore and coal pyrite samples. The kinetics of pyrite dissolution were also investigated. The results are discussed in terms of the fundamental chemical and physical characteristics of each sample, and the implications for waste characterization are considered.

Virtually all industries use sulphur in some form. About half of the world's production is used in the production of fertilizers. Sulphur is produced in one form or another in over sixty countries in the world. The major producing countries, in order of importance, are: U.S.A., Canada, U.S.S.R., Poland, Japan, France, Mexico, and Spain. Canada is the largest exporter of sulphur presently supplying about 30% of the world elemental sulphur export trade. It has held this position since 1968. World sulphur resources are virtually unlimited. Future world competition will come from Iraq and other Middle East countries as well as Central and South America.

Vertical magnetic surveys have been made over about 3, 150 miles of the crystalline area of east-central Alabama. A contour map (100-gamma interval) showing regional magnetic anomalies has been prepared (scale 1:250,000) from data points located at quarter-mile intervals on all public roads. Small one- and two-station anomalies were eliminated, leaving only areally extensive anomaly features associated with regional geology. The regional gradient was "filtered" from the basic data and the resulting magnetic configuration compared to the regional geology. Regional lines of vertical magnetic intensity trend northeast and follow the structural framework of the area. Correlations can be made between a large number of geologic and magnetic features. The strongest regional anomalies are associated with the Goat Rock, Bartletts Ferry, Towaliga, and Brevard fault structures. The Inner Piedmont area is characterized by a broad regional high. The magnetic values of the northern Alabama Piedmont grades gently northwestward, disrupted occasionally by elongate highs and lows associated with amphibolites or granites. Scattered throughout the Piedmont are anomalous areas of high magnetic intensity; some are related to magnetic-bearing rocks, and some Indicate possible mineralization. "The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) conducted underground evaluations in an attempt to quantify respirable rock dust generation when using an untreated rock dust and a rock dust treated with an anti-caking additive. Using PDM 3600s and 3700s, these evaluations measured respirable rock dust levels arising from a flinger-type application of rock dust on rib and roof surfaces. Rock dust with a majority of the respirable component removed was also applied in NIOSH’s Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) using a bantam duster. The respirable dust measurements obtained downwind from both of these tests are presented and discussed. This testing did not measure miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust under acceptable mining practices, but indicates the need for effective continuous administrative controls to be exercised when rock dusting to minimize the measured amount of rock dust in the sampling device. INTRODUCTION Two factors have combined to renew concern regarding respirable dust measurements and compliance. This renewed recognition is due to two regulations that have modified operators’ rock dust schedules. First, the 80% incombustible requirement in intake entries has increased both on-section and outby-the-section rock dusting. Secondly, the recent respirable dust regulation change that has increased the number of respirable dust samples taken per sampling cycle. Previously, when only 5 samples were needed bi-monthly, rock dusting could be scheduled to not interfere with the respirable dust sampling schedule. The significant number of samples now required under new regulations combined with the need to maintain 80% total incombustible content in active mining areas require the schedules for respirable dust sampling and rock dusting to intermix. This raises concerns about the amount of rock dust that potentially is included in the sampler weight gain. Additionally, the respirable dust maximum was lowered from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 (effective August 1, 2016) increasing concern that rock dust contamination may be an issue. Currently, the acceptable practice is to apply administrative controls such as keeping the miners upwind during rock dust application or to schedule rock dusting during a maintenance shift when the number of miners present is lower. NIOSH’s research examining the quality of rock dust has led to the development of hydrophobic rock dusts."

The United States has the largest total (364 billion metric tons) and recoverable (182 billion metric tons) coal reserves in the world.1 However, progressive coal utilization in this country has been hampered by environmental constraints, such as restrictions on sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate emissions. New technologies are being pursued both to appease these environmental concerns and improve economic performance and process efficiency. These technologies, however, have not reached the level of effectiveness required for optimum operation. If more stringent emission standards are imposed, it is likely that the coal industry, and the industrial and utility sectors will look increasingly toward the successful development of new and advanced coal cleaning technologies in order to continue and promote the use of coal in this country. The EPA New Source Performance Standards In 1979, the Environmental Protection Agency in response to the amendments to the Clean Air Act of 1977 issued new source performance standards (NSPS) for utility and industrial boilers. The NSPS set emission standards for sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulates affecting boilers of 250 MM Btu per hour heat input or 'greater that started construction after September 1978. Plants starting construction or in operation before September 1978 remained subject to the provisions of the regulations promulgated in 1971, i.e., SO2 emissions of 1.2 15/MM Btu. The NSPS for SO2 emissions provides a sliding scale for SO2 reduction depending on the sulfur content of the run-of-mine coal, with an upper limit of 1.2 lb of SO2 per million Btu and a minimum emission level based on 70% SO2 removal. Table 1 summarizes the EPA NSPS for SO2 emission standards.

The new combination gypsum plaster and gypsum wallboard plant of Compania Industrial Kaiser S.A., the first of its kind in Mexico went into production in April of 1969. This was approximately fourteen months from the signing of the formal order for the plant and equipment. Compania Industrial Kaiser S.A. is an affiliate of the Kaiser Gypsum Company in the United States and will market practically the same line of products and to the same standards as those produced in American plants. Located in the City of Puebla, the plant will readily service the major Mexican sales areas. It is approximately 85 miles away from Mexico City on a modern, four-lane, divided highway and distribution to other major consumer areas can be readily effected by the use of a good highway system, as well as, by rail. This, plant is the, sixteenth Gypsum Wallboard Mill supplied abroad by my company, United States Wallboard Machinery Company. Other installations are in Australia, New Zealand, Chile, England, Scotland, Ireland, Finland, South Africa, Latvia and Germany. Two new mills are on order; a small unit for Brazil and a comparatively large unit for New Zealand. All these mills have one thing in common with plants in the United States and Canada; they are equipped with standard, time-proven and tested equipment and they are designed in accor¬dance with the latest engineering thinking in order to produce efficiently, the highest quality product at lowest cost. They differ generally in the size of plant, the factors that brought them into being and in the market that they supply. I believe that these differences will be of interest to you.

It is the responsibility of educators to look ahead and prepare young engineers and scientists to cope with industrial and social problems of the future. We are faced with a review of history as well as prophesy of the future. The mining industry exists in a "bubble" with little interaction or communication with the outside. This isolation must be broken down if the industry is to survive in the U.S. and Canada. The ability to communicate with the general public and public officials is essential. Many changes are occurring that will require readjustments in technology and staffing. Aging population will result in raising retirement and increasing available workforce. This may force shorter working weeks to supply additional jobs. Environmental concerns will likely direct more attention not only to these concerns during mining, but to planning for post-mining land usage. Retraining and up-dating educational programs are required to cope with these changes.

The materials handling systems in the large concentrating plants have required the employment of a considerable number of workmen, many of whom had very little to do except to act as watchmen to avoid bad spills at belt junctions and to operate tripper cars, shuttle belts, etc. Much time also was spent in watching bins to make sure they were properly filled. Approximately four and one-half years ago the author, Yin coopera¬tion with the engineering and supervisory personnel of The Anaconda Company at Anaconda, Montana, began to give this problem serious consideration. Prior to this the author had developed, at the request of The Anaconda Company, a transistorized resistance-sensitive probe relay system for detecting the level of ore in bins. With this system cables or chains were suspended from insulators above the bins and were of suitable length to determine the elevation of the ore in the bins.

Radon is an established lung carcinogen and remains the most important environmental radiation exposure. It was estimated that inhalation of radon and its short-lived decay products accounts on average for about one half of the effective dose equivalent from all natural sources of radiation. Radon contained in household water can transferred into room air as a result of agitation or heating. An indoor air concentration of 400 Bq/m3 is obtained if the radon concentration in household water is 4 kBq/L. A typical concentration of radon in ground water is about 1000 times lower than this concentration but sometime elevated concentrations of some kBq/L in ground water are reported. In this work a Liquid Scintillation counting system is used to obtain fast and accurate measurements of radon (222Rn) in water samples from Argolida, Greece.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has entered into a $l.5 million Cooperative Agreement with Alpine Equipment Corporation/Astro International Corporation ("Alpine") of State College, Pennsylvania, for the evaluation of water-jet-assisted (WJA) mechanical cutting of oil shale under actual mining conditions. A commercial-sized, heavy WJA mechanical miner is being assembled based upon the successful "factory testing" of a smaller prototype miner utilizing standard tungsten-carbide and Polycrystalline Diamond Composite (POC) bits in large oil shale boulders. Actual field testing of the machine will be conducted in an oil shale mine located in the Piceance Basin of Western Colorado. In-mine logistical support is being provided by several oil shale companies through the Colorado Mining Association (CMA) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM).

The present work discusses the nuances of scaling and flow similarity to develop a 1/40th scale version of a longwall coal mine. Details on the geometric, kinematic, and dynamic scaling of the physical model are presented and discussed. This works also discusses using a 30% CO2 – 70% He gas mixture as a surrogate for methane. It also presents the implications of various Reynolds numbers (ranging from 7,000 to 140,000) and rotation of the shearer drums in the dynamic representation of the airflow and gas mixtures in the physical scaled model.

During the recent expansion of precipitate copper production at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, Santa Rita, New Mexico, local studies of the dump leaching process were intensified. As these studies progressed it became apparent that a reliable method for locating leach solutions within the dump was required, since the contact between leach solutions and the copper-bearing material would determine, in great part, the recovery of values. In the past, the problem of determining leach solution contact has been attacked by various methods, including destructive testing (dump dissection), indirect observation (such as chloride or dye tracers), and mathematical or laboratory model studies. These methods have not proved completely satisfactory for the studies now being developed. Investigation of methods for in situ observation of leach solutions led to consideration of radiation logging in drill holes, which are petro¬leum exploration and development techniques for locating fluids and measuring porosity in the subsurface. Standard oil field logging equipment was leased, modified, and tested. After successful testing, the equipment was purchased for additional studies. Applications and results of the methods are described in this paper.

The discovery of a major porphyry-type copper deposit on the Papago Indian Reservation in Pinal County, Arizona was announced by El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1968. The deposit, known as the Lakeshore Property, contained an estimated 470 million tons of sulfides and oxides averaging 0.75 percent copper. History and Geology of the area have been described by Harper and Reynolds (1969). El Paso subsequently&apos; entered into the agreement for joint development of the property with Hecla Mining Company, with Hecla as the operator.
