Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource and serves as the primary fuel for the U.S. electric-power industry. However, its continued and expanded use is often challenged by the nature and amount of its associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, and trace elements. The moderate- to high-sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern today as potentially more stringent regulations requiring further reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions are being considered. The most prevalent method currently employed to control SO2 emissions from coal-burning facilities is post-combustion flue-gas desulfurization. However, physical coal cleaning (a.k.a. beneficiation, preparation) methods can also be effective in removing sulfur and ash impurities from coal prior to combustion. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about 50-mm (2-inch) topsize, and then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine size fractions. Crushing liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including the portion of inorganic sulfur (pyritic) not chemically bound to the coal matrix. The percentage of impurities liberated generally increases as the coal particle size is reduced. Coarse- and intermediate-sized coal particles are typically subjected to specific gravity-based cleaning methods, while fine-sized (less than 0.5-mm) coal particles are beneficiated using froth flotation, a technique based on surface property differences. Greater cleaning potential exists at finer sizes because of increased liberation of impurities, but this potential is not fully realized because of inefficiencies associated with fine particle separation using state-of-the-art coal cleaning technologies.

Coal refuse slurry impoundments are dams constructed of coarse coal refuse to impound fine refuse (slurry) and water (25-30% solids). Both products are waste from coal preparation plants. A number of these structures in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky were investigated to determine embankment stability. During the investigation a variety of embankment designs were encountered. The investigation determined the soil and geological characteristics of the embankments and the sites. This was accomplished by a test drilling and monitor installation (observation wells and piezometers) program, geologic study, and large scale mapping which allowed sub-surface profiles of the embankments to be constructed. The laboratory testing program concentrated on textural classification of the coal refuse, permeability and determining strength parameters to be utilized in the stability analyses. For the stability analyses, the Modified Fellinius Slip Circle, Simplified Bishop Slip Circle and Analysis for Translational Failure -were utilized. In all stability analyses hydrostatic pressure and earthquake were considered. This investigation indicated that 62% of the embankments analyzed are in a stable condition. The coal seam mined, the type of roof rock, and the gradation of the refuse influence the degree of compaction obtainable and the permeability of refuse. The shear strength of coal refuse appears to be controlled by its composition, moisture content, degree of compaction, amount and grain size of fines present. This investigation demonstrated these em¬bankments should not be treated as pure state-of-the-art dams; consideration must be given to the particular properties of coal refuse and the total refuse disposal system. Refuse dim slurry impoundments generally lack the site se- lection phase that is standard practice with siting most other types of dams.

Most coal mining areas of the Western United States are characterized either by thick beds, steep pitches or heavy cover. Individually, each of these may present inherent safety hazards that influence miring. When all are met at one location, the combined effect is to make the safe operation of the mining property a challenge to management. These combined, conditions are met in most coal mines in southeastern Utah including those of the United States Steel Corporation. This coal bed measures up to 16 feet in thickness, the pitch is as much as 25% and mining is under a cover approaching 2, 000 feet. The Sunnyside coal bed is found in the Book Cliff Mountains, a great escarpment extending from west of Castle Gate, Utah, some 180 miles to Grand Junction, Colorado. West of Green River, Utah, the Book Cliffs swing sharply to the north because of the domelike uplift of the San Rafael Swell to the southwest..It is in this northerly extension of the Book Cliffs that the Sunnyside coal in the Blackhawk Formation of the Mesa Verde Group, Upper Cretaceous Age is found. The strata are transected by numerous faults with from a few inches to as much as a hundred feet of displacement. All of these faults have had some effect on the mining operation, either in roof control or, in the case of major faulting, the pattern of mine development.

Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that uses gravitational force to mine massive, steeply dipping and deep-seated ore deposits at lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. As caving is a dynamic process, designing an effective ventilation system is challenging; therefore, estimating the airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

The mining industry has searched for a message that will resonate with the public while focusing on the industry’s positive contributions to society. So far, environmental groups remain unconvinced and the public is still largely uninformed. In the authors’ opinion, a number of recent events and experiences have converged to help shape a more effective public communication on mining’s important role. This article presents a perspective on coal’s role in sustaining society by anchoring the message in a transparent way, including a material flow analysis, that links coal’s impacts across a range of social and environmental aspects. Past and continuing image problems In her 1994 paper, Nancy Bingham, with Caterpillar, outlined what the public thought about mining. Based on extensive interviews, the following results were found: • The public believed mining harms the environment. • The public believed mining harms people in nearby communities. • The public believed mining exploits workers. • The public believed mining has little personal benefit to the individual.

The Atlantic City iron mine is located in Fremont County in central Wyoming, near the historic gold mining camps of Atlantic City and South Pass City. The mine lies on the southeast flank of the Wind River Mountains at an elevation of about 2,470 m (8,100 ft) above sea level (Fig. 1). An 81-h M2 (200-acre) tailings impoundment at the Atlantic City taconite operation has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming&apos;s Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction incorporated commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300-mm- (12-in.-) thick cap of a sterile clay loam cover material. The water level was lowered in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin. A wide tailings pond spillway was built that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water-level fluctuations in the pond. Rock berms and rock snow fences were built for wind-erosion control and soil-moisture preservation. Future work includes tree planting in the protective wind/ snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences and plugging a decant pipe. US Steel opened the Atlantic City iron mine in August 1962. It closed in 1983. Taconite iron ore was mined by surface methods. The ore was magnetically separated from the waste. The magnetic concentrate was mixed with bentonite, formed into pellets and roasted to produce a blast furnace feed stock for US Steel&apos;s blast furnaces in Geneva, UT. The pellets were hauled by rail to the Geneva Iron Works. The Atlantic City Mine produced three types of wastes. These included waste rock overburden from mining, a coarse-grained (sand to small-gravel sized), nonmagnetic reject rock termed "cobbs" and fine-grained tailings ranging from 600 to 75 µm (28 to <200 mesh). "At the Kemi Mine, a recent expansion into the Surmaoja orebody required an increase in ventilation capacity. A new ventilation shaft was built with two main fans. The installation is near the entrance gate and only 1.7 kilometres from the nearest permanent dwelling. The main fans were first taken into use as exhaust fans in October 2014. Shortly after the fan installation, comments concerning fan noise were received from the neighbours. The first noise measurements were taken at the main fan installation site by Outokumpu personnel in March 2015. Due to higher than expected recorded values, during late June, 2015, a two-week environmental noise study was planned by the engineers and executed by a consultant specialized in noise measurement. The measurement results were analysed and compared to the requirements of the environmental permit and Outokumpu’s factory standards. While the measured values at the nearest dwelling were within the environmental permit limits, high noise values were recorded at the fan station. A second two-week study will be performed after construction of the main-fan heating station has been completed. Actions taken will depend on the outcome. INTRODUCTION The Kemi Mine is a part of the Outokumpu chain of integrated ferrochrome and stainless steel manufacturing in the Kemi-Tornio region in Finland. The mine itself is a large underground operation with a production capacity of 2.7 million tons of ore per annum. It is also the European Union’s only chrome mine, and at present (2015) the mine extracts 2.4 million tons of chrome ore per year. Safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness are hallmarks of the Kemi Mine. Environmental impact produced by the operation of the mine is limited due to the insolubility of the oxide chromium ore, the gravity-based and chemical-free enriching process as well as the closed circulation system of the process water which serves both the whole mine and the enrichment process (Outokumpu, 2015). Importance of the environmental impact of the Kemi Mine is amplified by its closeness to the cities of Kemi and Keminmaa with the nearest habitants living less than 2 km away from the mine site. To show the cooperation with residents the Kemi mine organizes special “neighbour days” for the habitants of the areas closest to the mine. Also, information letters are sent to the neighbours, when changes that may affect the neighbours are being planned and executed."

3-D or pseudo 3-D visualization of orebodies and mining related processes such as loading and tramming, are now commonly used by the mining industry. An approach is presented that can aid the engineer in creating the visualizations necessary for accurate presentations for use in public relations, safety training, production projections, reclamation plans, etc. It is shown that the creation of such digital representations of mining environments are independent of the mining package used to create the original mine design. Once a proper model has been created, any view of the areas is possible. These views can be taken from any number of stationary points or entered into an animation showing the progress of a mining construction. The paper focuses on the presentation of the steps used to accomplish the visualization and an example is for a quarry fill placement project.

Some 30 years ago Stevenson (1940) underscored the fact that most of the world&apos;s molybdenite production came from the Cordillera that comprise the western part of North America, and that the northern extension of the Cordillera into British Columbia is not essentially dissimilar to the United States section. Therefore, in view of the successful development of molybdenite resources in the United States, he concluded that prospecting in the Canadian section f the Cordillera should be encouraged. However, as recently as seven years ago Schneider (1963) remarks that no large economic deposits have been brought into production in British Columbia, although one important property was being evaluated. World production f molybdenum ore was sporadic until 1900. Among the very early producing areas in North America were Arizona and New Mexico in the United States. World War I provided the stimulus that brought the Climax deposit into production, and in 1920 Questa, New Mexico followed, although the ore came from fissure vein deposits at that time. In the early part f this century high grade deposits in various parts f the world containing 5-20 percent MoS2 were exploited. In Canada most production during World War I came from Quebec and Ontario. With the build-up of world tension and the inception f hostilities in 1939, British demand was satisfied by United States producers (Schneider, 1963).

Caterpillar said it will produce a Cat line of ac electric drive mining trucks. The world’s largest manufacturer of mining and construction equipment said the addition of an AC electric drive truck line will provide its customers with products to fit key applications. “We are very proud of the strong leadership position that Caterpillar has attained with its mechanical drive trucks, and we will continue to invest in strengthening that position,” said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar’s Global Mining Division and Caterpillar Inc. vice president. “We also recognize that there are unique applications that would make the addition of ac electric drive an important and attractive complement to our current truck line.” This is the largest investment Caterpillar has made in mining trucks in its history.

Separation of valuable constituents from a complex mineral mixture was examined. Nitric acid leaching produced a solution containing copper, zinc, iron and a large proportion of silver. The residue contained antimony, lead, the remaining silver and elemental sulfur. A caustic sodium sulfide leach dissolved the antimony from the residue, producing an insoluble, high-grade silver-lead product and a filtrate for electrolytic recovery of antimony. The pH of the primary filtrate was raised, precipitating the iron and leaving a solution containing the copper, zinc and the soluble portion of the silver, which would be recovered by conventional means.

Newmont’s Lone Tree Mine, located in northern Nevada, is an open pit gold operation supported by a standard truck and shovel mine production fleet (Caterpillar 785Bs and Hitachi EXs). Newmont continues to search for ways to decrease capital expenditure and lower operating cost, hence the implementation of the Ultra Light Body (ULW) concept. The fundamental idea associated with the ULWs is the increased payload potential. Economic justification comes from successful achievement of additional payload, within the truck’s rated GVW, without changing its loading and hauling characteristics. The increase in payload capacity allows equivalent tonnage movement using fewer trucks.

Mine equipment fires remain as one of the most concerning safety issues in the mining industry, and most equipment fires were caused by hot surface ignitions. Detailed experimental investigations were conducted at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Mining Research Division on hot surface ignition of liquid fuels under ventilation in a mining environment. Three types of metal surface materials (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel), three types of liquids (diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, engine oil), four air ventilation speeds (0, 0.5, 1.5, 3 m/s) were used to study the hot surface ignition probability under these conditions. Visual observation and thermocouples attached on the metal surface were used to indicate the hot surface ignition from the measured temperatures. Results show that the type of metal has a noticeable effect on the hot surface ignition, while ventilation speed has a mixed influence on ignition. Different types of liquid fuels also show different ranges of ignition temperature. Results from this work can be used to help understand equipment mine fires and develop mitigation strategies.

A questionnaire was sent out to three classes of mines to determine the extent of the heat problem in U.S. and Foreign underground mines. The following list shows the replies received from this questionnaire, however not all the known hot mines in the US replied. A complete listing of the results can be seen in Appendix I. 1) US coal mines - 37 replies 2) US non coal mines - 23 replies 3) Foreign non coal mines - 36 replies. At the present time there are approximately eleven non coal and one coal mine in the US experiencing heat problems which require special efforts to maintain an acceptable working place climate. However since the survey was completed some of them have been placed on standby. The Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) does not have any specific regulations relating to heat stress. Informally the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists guidelines are followed which use wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) with values ranging from 26.7°C to 31.1°C for a moderate workload, and different rest regimes. An MSHA report (Misaqi 1976) recommended that conditions should not exceed 26.1°C WBGT for men and 24.4°C WBGT for women. However, quite recently the organizations involved with planning two of the proposed nuclear waste repositories in the United States, have opted for the criteria of an air cooling power of 300 w/m2, and a WBGT of 27&apos;C respectively.

The recent shale gas revolution in the United States has led to the drilling of hundreds of unconventional shale gas wells in active and future coal reserves in traditional coal-mining regions of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. This paper summarizes the impact of a shale gas well breach on the mine ventilation system of an operating longwall panel. This study utilizes a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) to simulate a single-panel longwall operation. The LIAM will be utilized to identify flow pathways and distribution patterns of gas from breached gas well scenarios in an operating longwall in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas is utilized to simulate a breached gas well. Preliminary findings suggest that the breached gas is diluted to regulatory levels and does not accumulate in the mine entries or in the longwall gob when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. Overall, this study characterizes the potential interaction between shale gas wells and the mine environment in the event of a gas well breach, which provides critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving safety, health, and welfare of miners.

To place the SME Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties (SME Valuation Standards) and International Mineral Property Valuation Standards template (IMVAL Template) within the global context of existing mineral valuation standards.2. To review the current status of harmonization of each International Mineral Valuation Committee (IMVAL) member’s mineral valuation standards (or code) with the IMVAL template and suggest remedies for issues found.3. To suggest future enhancements for the IMVAL Template and SME Valuation Standards, and to suggest future roles for the IMVAL and SME committees. From the author’s review, Ellis draws the following conclusions.The SME Valuation Standards comprise a minimum set of principles-based standards and guidelines for developing and reporting valuations of mineral properties (including petroleum properties) for public and private use, subject to jurisdictional requirements. The standards are also designed to provide mineral valuation guidance that supplements application of the International Valuation Standards Council’s International Valuation Standards (IVS) and the U.S. government endorsed Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), published by the Appraisal Foundation.The SME Valuation Standards is the first set of valuation standards developed by a minerals institute adopting and modifying the IMVAL template. As a result, the SME standards are essentially totally harmonized and otherwise aligned with the IMVAL template. IMVAL was initially conceived in 2012 as a discussion body to aid harmonization of each member’s valuation standards, by modifying to function the same. IMVAL primarily developed the IMVAL template, published in July 2016, to produce an agreed reference framework of essential mineral valuation guidance content as the goal for harmonization of the Australasian Code for Public Reporting of Technical Assessments and Valuations of Mineral Assets (VALMIN Code), The South African Code for the Reporting of Mineral Asset Valuation (SAMVAL) and the Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal standards and guidelines). The harmonization would result from each mineral valuation standards committee modifying its standards to operate similarly to the IMVAL template, producing valuation reports with similar content and value for the same mineral property. The template is also available for other bodies to adopt and modify for their regional setting’s needs, as SME did, or use as a convergence goal when updating an existing standard."

The Wind Mountain (WM) nepheline syenite deposit is part of the alkalic complex in the Cornudas Mountains, which ranges in age from 34.6 ± 1.5 Ma to 36.8 ± 0.6 Ma. The WM deposit consists of a complex, zoned pluton that ranges from syenite porphyry to nepheline syenite porphyry. The WM deposit has potential use for ceramics and dark-colored beverage containers and consists of nepheline, k-feldspar, albite, and varying amounts of other minerals. Analcime also is present locally but must be avoided because it is unsuitable for ceramic and glass. Chemically the deposit consists of 56-63 % SiO2 17-21 % Al2O3 and 4.0-5 % Fe2O3. Although initially iron is high, when the crushed rock is passed through a specialized magnetic separator, the iron content drops to below commercial maximum standards of less than 0.5% Fe2O3. The WM deposit is currently under exploration and testing to determine marketability.

The rapid evolution of computer and field sensor technology is now providing the ability to integrate mine and office operations. Digital maps and mine plans as well as CAD and GIS can be transferred to ruggedized field computers for development of real-time mine surveys and real-time GPS machine navigation and monitoring. Surveyors can insure that their surveys are accurate before returning to the office. Engineers and surveyors are also able to upload field computer-based surveys to mine planning software and directly to mine equipment including shovels, drills, and dozers providing the operator of the equipment with a real-time view of their work space. Production information can be transmitted through dispatch and/or centralized mine servers to update mine plans with mining progress and production data. Static mine models then become a dynamic element of operations, providing greater use of information that emphasizes the spatial aspects of the mine by providing real-time maps, productivity charts, and graphs. This information can be disseminated through various mine communication systems to provide operators and management with real-time feedback as well as daily and weekly reports. Integrated systems now being used in extensive trials are reporting productivity increases of 4 -7% or more thereby providing rapid payback to the mine.

This paper suggests that pre-occupation with the random process model notised by geostatisticians may result in neglect of more promising techniques, especially since the random process model does not appear to be essential to current geostatistical procedures. This point of view is emphasized pictorially. To emphasize the potential of new techniques a simple application of the conventional Brownian function is described. "There are signs that the commodity downturn that has battered the mining industry for the past five years is beginning to ease up. As the dust begins to settle and mining companies begin to take stock of the battle, Newmont Mining Corp. will be one that is standing strong with just a few scrapes and bruises thanks in large part to the leadership of president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg and his right hand man and chief operating officer, Chris Robison.As he closes in on retirement (for a second time) Robison, a third-generation miner from Nevada, took time to speak with Mining Engineering about a 33-year career in which, among other things, he is credited with not just helping Newmont survive the turbulent times but with steering the company to a safer, more productive and more profitable heading.“I think we did it better than anyone else,” Robison said when asked how the company fared during the past five years. “We didn’t talk about it a lot, we just put together a strategy and we delivered.”What Newmont, the world’s second-largest gold mining company by production, delivered since Robison took the position of chief operating officer in 2013 are improvements in costs, porduction, projects and safety.Operating under the mantra of “live within your means,” Robison was pulled out of retirement from Rio Tinto and into a challenging situation at Newmont. The price of gold was in a nose dive from a high of nearly $58/g ($1,800/oz) and heading to levels closer to $38.60/g ($1,200 oz).“Newmont is a big ship that can’t be turned, but has to be steered,” said Robison. “We recognized that we had to set a new course. The direction the ship was going was great for $1,600 to $1,800/oz gold but we were chasing ounces.”Like the rest of the gold mining sector before the falling gold prices, Newmont was focused on volume and was looking for gold wherever it could be found. The slogan at Newmont in 2011 was “7 million ounces a year by 2017.”When Robison came on board it was a different reality.“We had to begin focusing on value over volume as the cornerstone of Newmont going forward,” he said."
