El Teniente Mine expansion plans are currently under development and construction stages through an integrated project strategy that will allow the continuity of future mining. The deepest sector corresponds to Andes Norte Project that faced rockburst risks during tunneling in a completely different manner, implementing different actions for the mitigation of seismic hazard and seismic risk management, based on the following main aspects: rock mass preconditioning techniques such as destress blasting and hydraulic fracturing, improvement of rock support design with the inclusion of elements with higher energy dissipation capacities, use of mechanized equipment for the most critical activities in addition to re-entry protocols and improvements in geological, geomechanical and seismic data collection procedures to reduce the uncertainty of rock mass behavior. The current seismic risk management strategy integrates all of these elements and is the basis of construction methodologies in use, supporting the technical feasibility of tunneling in high-stress environments.

The rapid increase of P2O5 use for food, biofuels, and LiFePO4 batteries etc. accelerates the depletion rate of phosphate reserves. In the phosphate industry, a significant amount of ultrafine phosphate has been discarded as slime tailing due to processing difficulties. The major problems associated with ultrafine particle flotation are low probability of bubble-particle collision and adhesion, and high probability of unwanted gangue particles entrainment. This paper investigates the enhanced ultrafine phosphate particle flotation probability by Eriez’ CavTube generated fine/ ultrafine bubbles and the improved flotation selectivity by wash water etc. Ultrafine phosphates with various gangue minerals of quartz/muscovite, calcite/dolomite, and iron/ silica were studied. Microscopic observations show that the entrained ultrafine gangue minerals can be minimized by using wash water in column flotation. A three-factor threelevel central composite experimental design was conducted for ultrafine phosphate flotation. For comparison, both benchtop mechanical cell and laboratory column flotation tests were performed at their optimal respective flotation conditions. Using Eriez CavTube column flotation technology for Industries Chimiques du Senegal (ICS) ultrafine slime tailings, a concentrate grade of 36.0% P2O5, was achieved at 89.4% P2O5 recovery. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical cell flotation. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include the high P2O5 grade and recovery.

The extraction of aluminum oxide_ from its ore is the initial step in the commerical production of metallic aluminum. This is most commonly done by the Bayer Process in which a caustic solution is used to dissolve hydrated alumina from the insoluable materials with which it is associate in bauxite. At the two-thousand ton per day Sherwin Alumina Plant of Reynolds Metals Company, the extraction residue from Caribbean ores is removed from the main pro¬cess stream as the underflow of a continuous clarifier-thickener operation. This sludge, prior to its ultimate r4jection from the process, is washed in a nine-step continuous countercurrent decantation system to recover physically-entrained mother liquor. Control of alumina production costs requires the optimum recovery of solubles from this residue which is generated at the same rate as the finished product. The equipment, operating techniques, controls and process variables which affect the efficiency of this soda recovery from Bayer Process red mud will be discussed.

As new technologies are introduced to the mining industry, the challenges related to their safe assimilation and the potential changes they bring to mining techniques necessitate adjustments to the current operations. Predictive simulations are critical to understanding unforeseen scenarios and shifting costly changes from the operational stage to the design. The Digital Twin methodology has gained a lot of attention in recent years. Many industries, from manufacturing to engineering and even social sciences, are adopting this approach to understand better the complex systems they are working with. By considering the enormous expenses and risks related to a pilot project, DT could replace that by acting as a prototype in which realistic tests and simulations are carried out with close to zero cost. DT includes a data hub, simulation and analysis tools, and visualization platforms to enable appropriate designs and monitoring plans focusing on unknown areas. A few examples of DT's application in mining include fleet management, Mine-to-Mill optimization (especially D&B), geotechnical digital twin (gDT), etc. When developing regulations, testing the efficiency of the mine layout, design, and magnitude of the restricted area and its access points, human-machine interactions, risk identification, and management processes, examining the efficacy of control systems, and monitoring, DT could help speed up (or completely replace) the process in the physical world.

Separation of geochemical anomalies from background is an important and essential issue in the exploration of mineral deposits. Statistical methods are used to separation of anomaly from background. Fractal/multifractal and singularity methods are very suitable for the separation of weak anomalies. For interpolation, various methods could be used such as most distance-weighting methods, kriging, spline interpolation, interpolating polynomials, and finite difference methods. This paper addressed application of multifractal techniques together with finite difference procedure to detect the anomalous regions. Fractal models such as concentration–area, spectrum–area, and singularity index model were selected to identify Pb–Zn anomalies. In this research, 170 samples from 33 boreholes were taken in the Haft-Savaran area and analyzed for determination of Pb–Zn anomaly. Singularity method was a suitable method for separating Pb and Zn anomalies. Also, the results showed that the geochemical anomaly has occurred along NE–SW trend and is consistent with the sulfide mineralization process and the faults of the region.

It is difficult to remove cadmium from raw indium using only electrolytic refining because their standard potentials are similar. In this paper, physical and chemical methods were used to remove Cd from raw indium. Indium metal is vacuum refined for two hours at 400°C with a vacuum pressure of 20 Pa. In this process, 99.70% of the Cd can be removed. The removal rate of Cd reaches 90% to 95% when indium is further smelted for 10 minutes in a 20% glycerin solution of KI and I2 at 180°C. When pre-indium is electrolytic refined in an In2(SO4)3-H2SO4 system, in which the indium content is 80 to 100 g/L, the pH is 2.0-3.0 and the current density is 80 to 100 A/m2, the contents of the impurities decrease and the purity of the indium product reaches 99.99%.

Talc, as a mineral, is rather widespread, but as an ore sultable for mining, it is rather limited. Materials sold as "talc" range from the impeccable white material from Italy to a gray-green-bluish material from Virginia. Some uses of the material called "talc" seem to be determined by the color of the material, some by the chemistry of the material, and some by the particle size of the ground material. But, there seems to be some overlapping of criteria used to judge the acceptability of a raw material. So then, any producer of talc material that is not a consumer of this raw material is faced with the age-old problems: "what do I call the stuff, and to whom should I try to sell it?" The answer to the first part is easy: if you want a high price, call it "talc"; if you want a low price, call it "soapstone". This may seem like a very simplified answer, but it is apparent that some of the products sold as "talc" have more than a minor amount of impurities in them; whereas, if they were called "soapstone", these same products would probably get a lower price.

Meramec Mining Company is a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp. which mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge Mine. The Pea Ridge property is located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drilling in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the orebody was mineable, Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Production commenced in April 1964. The orebody is overlain by about 1300 feet of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick. It dips about 80° and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 150 foot intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the orebody on 190 foot centers. Banks of scopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modified shrinkage stoping method. This was done by undercutting a 40 foot wide by 150 foot long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 5 foot intervals. A 65 foot still was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fingers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a ?lattice? of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar recovery program was necessary.

INTRODUCTION The National Park Service is entering the seventh year of monitoring caves for the presence of radon and radon daughter products. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the radiation monitoring program at Mammoth Cave National Park, and to present some of the results of this program. Mammoth Cave National Park completed five years of collecting data on May 1, 1981: although Mammoth Cave encompasses approximately 361 km of underground passageways, this paper will concentrate on only a 2.2 km section of the cave known as the Historic Tour. Included in this paper is a discussion of the methods the Nations Park Service uses to protect employees from exposure to alpha radiation. MONITORING METHODS The National Park Service monitors cave atmospheres utilizing the procedures provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration in their Radiation Monitoring Training Manual (Anon., 1976). This procedure is described as the Kusnetz Method (Kusnetz, 1956) of radon daughter monitoring. Due to the length of the tours at Mammoth Cave, it has been determined to be the most practical procedure. The Historic Tour is a 2.2 km (1.4 mile) loop through passageways ranging in size from 18 m high by 12 m wide, to 0.9 m high by 0.6 m wide. Seven five minute walking samples were taken for this cave tour by drawing at least 10 1 of air through a 25 mm fiberglass filter utilizing a Monitaire Sampler Pump. The radon daughter concentration levels were determined using an alpha scintillation counter to measure the alpha activity on the filter paper. The Monitaire Sampler Pump was calibrated each day prior to monitoring the cave tour and the scintillation counter was calibrated by procedures described by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (Beckman, 1975) at six month intervals. Guidelines established by the National Park Service and approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration require weekly sampling when the average working level exceeds 0.30 (NPS-14, 1980). A working level is an atmospheric concentration of radon (Rn-222) daughters which will deliver 1.3 x 10 5 MeV of alpha energy per liter of air in decaying through Ra C' (Po-214). The Historic Tour has continually exceeded the 0.30 working level average and has been monitored weekly. Generally, only radon daughter working level data has been collected on the Historic Tour due to limited personnel. However, other special measurements of the uncombined fractions of radon daughters with wire screens, tsivoglou method for radon daughter sampling (Thomas modification, 1970), and thoron daughter monitoring. These special measurements have not been routine due to time limitations involved in radon daughter sampling of other occupied portions of the cave. SUMMARY OF DATA The Historic Tour has been the most consistantly monitored tour since elevated levels of alpha radiation were found to exist at Mammoth. Cave. It is also the only natural entrance to the main sections of the cave and provided an opportunity to study man made actions upon the natural entrance. For these reasons the Historic Tour was isolated for study. Beginning October 10, 1977, and ending November 20, 1977, a pilot project was undertaken involving the Historic Tour and the practice of covering the natural entrance to this tour with sheet metal in the winter months. The purpose was to study radiation levels on the Historice Tour while the covers were on and off the natural entrance. In this pilot project, comparisons were made with incast air with covers on and off the entrance, and outcast air with covers on and off the entrance. TABLE 1 Incast air Mean W.L. Decreased 5% Covers off. . . . 1.40 W.L. when covers on The natural entrance was artificially covered in the winter months (Yarborough, 1978) to protect the visitor from the extremely cold incast air, in the first four years of monitoring. The data in Table 1, illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, shows that this action increased the radon daughter working levels on the Historic Tour by 54% when the covers were on the entrance and the airflow was incast. The prospect of accomplishing economically and scientifically profitable deep-sea mineral mining within this decade or the next one is of particular interest to the emerging discipline of astrobiology which is concerned with the origin, distribution and future of life in the Universe. Several planetary bodies within our own Solar System such as Jupiter’s moon Europa and Saturn’s Enceladus now appear to be potentially habitable, or life-friendly, in terms of the three prerequisites for life as we know it: a sustained body of liquid water, biogenic elements (C, H, N, O, P, S) and energy sources to fuel metabolic reactions. Europa, for instance, possesses a global subsurface ocean, believed to be up to 100 km in depth, hidden beneath a kilometer-wide ice-sheet. A silicate mantle is directly interacting with a cold, aphotic ocean in which tidal forces might drive geological seafloor activity that results in the creation of hydrothermal systems. These locales are commonly hypothesized to be the cradles for an alternate origin of life on Europa. Especially alkaline hydrothermal springs, as found at Lost City, have been at the center of modeling the prebiological evolutionary dynamics preceding cellular life. Serpentinization-like reactions are also possibly fueling metabolic networks in putative microbial communities found in the oceans of the icy moos. Major space agencies around the globe are planning future space missions aimed at exploring and eventually characterizing potential life forms in these habitats. The technology needed for this exploration effort resembles the requirements for a successful deep-sea mineral mining industry: highly efficient AUVs (also equipped with biologically-oriented instrumentation), swarm robotics, landers, seafloor rovers and general high-pressure, cold temperature extreme environment engineering. Interestingly, science questions of deep-sea mineral mining and astrobiology converge too: the hypothesis of life originating at hydrothermal systems, the biogeographical distribution of species among these environments, adaptations of extremophilic organisms across the three domains of life and adequate autonomous robotic systems to assess the complexity of deep-sea biological communities. This presentation attempts to present a two-fold view of advanced planetary exploration that relates to a sustainable vision of deep-sea mineral mining: charting our oceans and developing technologies least harmful to endemic biology can propel the design and prototyping of future robotic planetary probes bound for aquatic missions on alien moons. Space industry, government and public interest towards a broadened planetary perspective on deep-sea mineral mining is promoted by addressing an astrobiological rationale of this endeavor.

More stringent dust standards, because of quartz in coal, have become a major compliance problem for the coal industry. Reducing quartz levels has become the major focus of the Bureau of Mines dust control research program. Results to date have identified hath the sources of quartz and prospective control technology. Control techniques are being developed for both room-and-pillar and longwall mining underground operations. Techniques include changes in face ventilation, mining cycle modifications, and better roof bolting dust control.

Sedimentary deposits of pluvial Lake Bonneville are an important source of sand and gravel suitable for aggregate and construction in Utah. Data on Lake Bonneville basin sand and gravel deposit thickness, volume, grain size, percent of fines, and durability were statistically analyzed to detect variations associated with geologic domains, geographic location, Lake Bonneville shorelines, and sand and gravel deposit type, and to construct quantitative deposit models. Analysis showed several trends; (1) sand and gravel in younger shorelines was slightly more durable and the deposits considerably larger in volume, (2) younger shore- lines are also more likely to contain more than one genetic deposit type, (3) the volume of terrace deposits is larger than beach deposits, (4) terraces and beaches are generally thicker than spits and bars, (5) the northern part of the Bonneville Basin contains slightly more durable sand and gravel than the southern part of the basin and is more likely to contain deposits composed of more than one genetic deposit type, aid (6) the Wasatch domain deposits are composed of more than one genetic deposit type more often than deposits of the Basin and Range domain. Three additional conclusions with immediate economic significance are; (1) the median sand and gravel deposit in the Wasatch domain, 360,000 m3 (275,000 yd3), is three times larger than that of the Basin and Range domain (120,000 m3 [90,000 yd3]), (2) the median deposit thickness in the Wasatch domain, 5.8 m (19.0 ft), is nearly twice that of the Basin and Range domain (3 m [lo ft]), and (3) the Wasatch domain also contains slightly larger diameter gravel. These three conclusions are significant because the trend for sand and gravel development in the Bonneville Basin is to move from the Wasatch domain to the Basin and Range domain. Smaller, thinner deposits with smaller diameter gravel will require more surface area to mine than would have been necessary in the Wasatch domain. The result is a higher cost for sand and gravel in construction projects in the Salt Lake City area, especially since the gravel must also be hauled farther.

California was a major talc-producing State until the late 1980s when production from the deposits in the Death Valley area ceased because of a number of factors which included pressure to discontinue mining in and around Death Valley National Monument, and health concerns affecting markets for tremolitic talc. The states of Montana and Texas now account for slightly more than half of U.S. talc production. Deposits in an area encompassing southern Death Valley and extending east into the Kingston Range were formed by contact metamorphism of carbonate beds in the Precambrian Crystal Spring Formation next to Precambrian diabase sills. These deposits contain ore ranging from high-purity, fine-grained talc to platy, tremolitic talc with high brightness. Deposits of tremolitic talc and talc schist in the Silver Lake District in San Bernardino County resulted from metamorphism of Precambrian carbonate beds intruded by granitic plutons. Northeast in Esmeralda County, Nevada hydrothermal alteration related to Late Jurassic plutons caused talc replacement of Precambrian to Early Cambrian dolomite. A hydrothermal origin is also indicated for talc deposits in the lnyo Range just north of the Death Valley District where bodies of unusually pure talc occur in Paleozoic lime- stone near Jurassic granitic plutons. Talc is now mined from a deposit in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range southeast of Sacramento where quartz-mica schist of the Permian Calaveras Formation has been hydrothermally altered to talc. Replacement of magnesite of the Precambrian Allamoore Formation produced talc deposits mined in the Allamoore District of west Texas. This dark-gray talc of low iron content with carbon- aceous material and dolomite is ideally suited for use in ceramics where it makes a white product when fired. Small bodies of platy light-pink to white talc suitable for use as an extender in paint are also mined in this district. In the Llano District of central Texas talc has replaced impure carbonate rocks and serpentinite. All Montana talc production is from deposits in the southwestern part of the State that formed by Precambrian hydrothermal alteration of dolomitic marble. This alteration produced material with high purity that ranges from very fine-grained, massive talc to coarser grained, foliated talc. Markets include pitch control in paper, paint, cosmetics, ceramics, rubber and plastics. In southwestern and northeastern Oregon, talc has replaced serpentinite in the vicinity of Mesozoic plutons. Soapstone for carving is mined from a southwestern Oregon deposit. Deposits of similar origin occur in central and northwestern Washington.

The Saskatchewan ore zone strikes slightly south of East, from the Alberta border to Manitoba; and dips to the South. The conventional mines are located along a broad strike line from Saskatoon to Esterhazy-Rocanville. Nine conventional mines have developed ore bodies at a nominal depth of 915 metres (3000 ft.). One mine had developed an ore body at 1525 metres (5000 ft.) by solution mining. Mining reserves of 100 years are not unusual in this vast ore body. Most of the mines were brought on stream during the 1960s. All the conventional mines were influenced by practices developed at Carlsbad, N.M. By 1970, the industry was faced with serious over-capacity resulting in the cancellation of some projects and the introduction, by the provincial government, of the Potash Pro-rationing Regulations designed to share the available market amongst all the producers. This resulted in production rates as low as 40% of capacity. As a result, the 1970s were characterized by attempts to reduce cost, rather than improve production or processing techniques. In recent years, the plants have all been brought to full capacity, and are currently involved in a massive program of expansion, which promises a period of advancing technology.

With a view toward increasing its product competitiveness in the foreign market, SAMARCO MINERACAO S/A has developed high MgO type pellets at its pilot plant for performing direct reduction simulation tests. Additives such as dolomitic lime and magnesite were used for increasing pellet MgO content. Comparative direct reduction simulation tests were conducted both in SAMARCO and foreign laboratories. The test results showed that it is possible to produce direct reduction type pellets with satisfactory metallurgical properties, which can be successfully processed at increased temperatures in direct reduction furnaces.

A recent development in underground drilling has been the introduction of the down-the-hole drill, an old and very familiar tool to the surface operator. The idea of moving such a rig underground is not new. Tests were conducted at INCO in Canada and Mt. Isa, Australia in the early 1960's, and St. Joe used one for underground exploration in their Missouri lead mines in the mid-1960's. However, the trend to full scale production programs did not start until the mid-1970's. The first successful North American test was at INGO in early 1973. This led to a large-scale pillar recovery and open stoping program which en¬compassed 25 drilling units by mid-1976. Meramec Mining Company tested a unit using air boosted up to 200 psi (140, 000 kg(m2) in the summer of 1973 which by 1976 led to an open stope and pillar drilling program using 12 units. By mid-1976, production units using boosted air were also in use at Pilot Knob in Missouri and at St. Joe in Balmat, New York. Experimental and utility units were in use in several other mines and down-the-hole drills were being seriously considered for at least one major new underground mine.

The Westerly Storage Tunnel is a 25-foot diameter segmentally lined storage tunnel that is a major component of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District's Project Clean Lake that is designed to capture 39 million gallons of untreated CSO overflows from entering Lake Erie. During the final stages of the project completion, a large-scale rock fallout incident occurred during the final lining installation operations at the down-stream end of the tunnel that extended beyond the designed primary support system. This paper outlines the level of coordination and collaboration between the Owner, Designer and Contractor to remediate the situation safely, quickly and effectively.

Mobile excavation equipment operators at surface mines generally have the highest exposure to airborne respirable silica dust. Operator cabs on newer equipment are usually enclosed and equipped with heating and air conditioning systems. Many newer cabs are also equipped with air filtration systems. However, some newer cabs and many older cabs have either inefficient or no air filtration systems. The U. S. surface mining industry is still populated with older equipment and many of these have cabs that provide little or no respirable silica dust protection. Collaborative field studies were conducted as part of a partnership involving NIOSH, Clean Air Filter®, Red Dot, MSHA, and several mine operators to demonstrate that effective dust protection can be provided by these cabs at a nominal cost to mine operators. This effort encompassed adding an external make-up air fan and filter system to a retrofitted roof-mounted heating and air conditioning system in three older equipment cabs, and attempting to seal the cab enclosures to achieve interior cab pressurization. Abetter than 90 percent dust reduction was measured inside two of the three enclosed equipment cabs. It was possible to achieve positive cab pressurization inside these two cabs. A less significant dust reduction was measured inside the third cab, where positive pressurization was not achieved. These field studies demonstrate the key elements needed to improve enclosed cab dust protection in a cost-effective manner.
