Ground water, one of Florida's most valuable resources, is also one of its most abundant. The State is fortunate to have several prolific ground- water reservoirs that yield tremendous quantities of water to wells and to some of the world's largest springs. These ground-water reservoirs, or aquifers are of two types artesian and nonarteaian. Ad artesian aquifer is one that contains water under sufficient pressure to rise above the top of the oontaining formation. A nonartesian aquifer is one that contains water which is not confined, and the upper water surface (water table) is free to rise and fall. The principal source of ground water in Florida is the artesian Floridan aquifer which supplies most of the water users in the State. Nonartesian sources include the Biscayne aquifer of southeastern Florida, the sand-and-gravel aquifer of extreme western Florida, and a shallow aquifer which lies at depths of less than 100 feet over much of the State. The accompanying map shows the approximate areas where these aquifers are the main source of supply; however, the boundaries do not represent the areal extents of the aquifers. For example, the Floridan aquifer extends beyond the southern boundary shown on the map, but it is not of great economic significance there because the water is highly mineralized. Aquifers other than the four described occur in the State, but they are, for the most part, of minor significance. One of these is an artesian aquifer which is formed by permeable zones that occur locally within the confining beds above the Floridan aquifer.

Introduction The March 1969 issue of Civil Engineering contained on article entitled "BART" Subway Construction: Planning and Costs" authoried by Thomas R. Kuesel. This article describes in some detail the innovations developed in planning and management to undertake the design and construction of the BART Project. This 75 mile long system contained 17 miles of urban tunnels and 13 subsurface stations. Within this article Mr. Kuesel very nicely listed the cost of the 70,000 linearfeet of bored tunnel, 23,380 linearfeet of cut and cover tunnel, and the costs of the thirteen underground stations. Ten years subsequent to the publishing of Mr. Kuesels article, it is very sobering to realize that San Francisco obtained a bargain of a magnitude that we are just beginning to realize. Table 1 is a listing of tunneled line sections taken from the paper. The average cost shown in this figure, including sections constructed under compressed air is $1,620 per foot of tunnel, with bid dates ranging from June 1966 thru October 1968. This average cost translated to about $16 million per double track mile of twin tunnel system.

Through the use of good preventive maintenance procedures in which the work of both production and maintenance personnel is well-coordinated, production downtime can be drastically minimized, and costly repairs and interruptions in planned maintenance and production schedules can be eliminated. There had been some conflict in the past between production and maintenance people over the proper method of achieving maximum machine performance. The usual practice was to operate production equipment at maximum capacity for the longest possible time until breakdown occurred, and then make hurried repairs to get back into production. In most cases, these repairs involved unscheduled work and were thus performed inefficiently. Both production and maintenance have the same objective: to produce a quality product at maximum efficiency and at minimum cost. Preventive maintenance is a common tool available for both production and maintenance personnel to achieve this objective. Actually, one of the main objectives of preventive maintenance is to find any abnormal machine condition that may cause machine failure before a breakdown occurs. This makes it possible to plan and schedule maintenance work with the least amount of interruption and plan production volume with a higher rate of accuracy. Maintenance people prefer to perform this work on a scheduled basis and get away from the "crash" situation that accompanies breakdowns. They thereby increase the utilization of available manpower and machine time, prolong equipment life, and improve maintenance costs.

Comminution is the process by which rock or ore is reduced to a size where the liberation of the minerals is maximized without changing the chemical or physical properties of the rock. Comminution accounts for about 50% of all energy that mines use (Klein et al., 2018). Growing demands from stakeholders and shareholders for sustainable development and CO2 reduction will increase the need for energy-efficient comminution. Ores with different mineralogical characteristics, textures, strengths, apparent stiffness, and mass-specific fracture energies need to be processed with a specific, new, and efficient comminution technology to increase the production and profitability of mining companies. The adoption of crusher wear parts built with new materials, such as non-Hadfield manganese steel or synthetic materials or traditional manganese with wear-resistant components, could improve the efficiency of the crushers, reduce downtime, increase production, improve the desired P80 (the aperture through which 80% of the product will pass) product size distribution, and enhance mine safety.

A ventilation study was conducted at a western U.S. coal mine to evaluate the movement of longwall face air and exchanges between the face and worked-out areas to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. This field study was part of a project investigating the effect of longwall face length and caving characteristics on longwall face air behavior and its potential movement on and off of the face. Tracer gas experiments using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) were done to describe air movement on the face and in the mined-portion of the active panel. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob.

The ever-increasing demand for steel and the subsequent depletion of high-grade ores requires the massive utilization of low-grade iron ores. In the present study, an iron ore slime sample containing 56.1% Fe was investigated using physical beneficiation, carbothermal reduction, and a microwave-assisted process; however, physical beneficiation and microwave exposure were found to be inefficient as they yielded lower iron recovery. Using coconut shell as an alternative reductant was found to be promising and does not lead to the formation of higher iron oxides, such as fayalite and wustite phases. The microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction was found at par with conventional reduction, saving time and heating. The optimum magnetic concentrate obtained in both carbothermal reduction routes (microwave and muffle furnace: Fe grade, Fe recovery, and yield of 64.3, 97, and 84%, and 67, 99, and 83%, respectively) are suitable for alternative iron-making or blast furnace units.

INTRODUCTION The selection of the optimum coal preparation plant flowsheet is a vital part of the development of a new plant or the expansion of an existing facility. Selection of an inappropriate flowsheet or individual equipment items can result in costly production losses, or needless expenditures or redundant or oversized equipment. The accuracy of the flowsheet selection process is, like most decisions, heavily dependent upon the amount, reliability, and quality of the database. A flowsheet which is based on simple borehole information from an area that has experienced little or no previous mining activity must necessarily include significant allowances for uncertainties. However, a plant which is to be built at an existing mine with good information on run-of-mine (ROM) coal quality, as well as bulk washability data and accurate projections of future quality, can be optimized. The following chapter will describe the processes which should be followed to select the most appropriate flowsheet for each unique operation. They include: 1. Examining and adjusting the washability database to reflect the ROM feed. 2. An evaluation of clean coal specifications. 3. Selection of the level of washing required. This includes no washing, if the coal is already at the desired specification, all the way through to complex total washing circuits for metallurgical grade coals. 4. Selection of the appropriate circuit such as dense medium bath vs. Baum jig. The most appropriate circuit is generally determined on the basis of economics. An approach for performing the evaluation will be desired. 5. The steps that need to be followed to develop a balanced plant flowsheet. ADJUSTING WASHABILITY DATA It is not unusual to have as many as 10 to 20 sets of washability information available for a particular mining property. These may be a combination of core and bulk samples or all bulk samples. In the latter case, they may also be face and/or ROM samples. It is necessary to reduce all of this information to a single set of washability data that is representative of the mean feed to the proposed preparation plant. This set is used to compare the clean coal yield and quality characteristics of the various flowsheet options. The term "representative" has some serious negative connotations. It is recognized that ROM coal quality will vary throughout a mine. However, over a period of 250 to 350 days per year, certain trends can be established. If possible, this "representative" sample should be close to the coal quality of the mean daily sample in terms of raw ash and sulfur contents, clean coal yield, and clean coal ash and sulfur content. The U.S. Bureau of Mines develops technology to help ensure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable. supply of minerals at reasonable economic, human, and environmental cost. Our research programs seek improvements for almost every aspect of the mineral production cycle--from evaluating the availability of minerals, removing the ore from the earth, to enhancing the performance of mineral materials. The health and safety of the men and women who work in the Nation's mines and minerals processing plants and the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing are major Bureau research concerns. In recent years, the U.S. mineral industry has found it increasingly difficult to compete for a share of world markets. Many foreign producers benefit from lower production costs and higher grade deposits. Some foreign governments subsidize their mineral industries and impose fewer restrictions with respect to environmental controls and health and safety regulations. If the United States is to compete in world mineral markets, innovative technology must be found to lower the cost of recovering and processing minerals. Mining and mineral processing research by the Bureau identifies ways to help the country maintain a sound, competitive industry and a dependable mineral supply, so vital to economic growth and the national security. This work includes efforts to improve existing techniques and procedures; but more and more of the Bureau's resources are being focused on long-term, high-risk research directed at developing new approaches to mining and mineral activities--approaches like in situ mining. Bureau scientists are studying the mining applications of computer assisted mining and investigating a variety of "high tech" approaches to extractive metallurgy. Such cutting-edge research will be necessary if major advances in health and safety, environmental quality, strategic and critical minerals availability, and overall U.S. competitiveness are to be achieved. It is just such high-risk research that the industry cannot afford to conduct itself, but--in the long run--cannot afford to be without. It is this type of research that will help us arrive at a revolutionary breakthrough rather than small incremental changes in health and safety technology as well as recovery methods. Our mining and mineral processing research is also directed at reducing the Nation's dependence on imports of minerals that have key defense and industrial uses. Some of these strategic and critical minerals are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions. We are working on technologies that would allow the United States to take advantage of domestic sources of these minerals--sources consisting primarily of deep or low-grade ores, ores with complex mineralogy we do not yet know how to process, and small deposits that are now uneconomical to mine and process. Other research activities focus on ways to reduce the Nation"s consumption of key minerals and increase the recycling of these minerals. The opportunities in this area include coal. The current middle eastern crisis reinforces the need for a stable energy supply--preferably a domestic supply. The extensive reserves of coal in this country are well documented. Perhaps what is not as well recognized is the impact that the price of coal can have on its competitive position both for domestic fuel selection considerations as well as for the ability of this country to compete in the coal export market. Today, the role to the United States is as a reliable, but high-cost exporter of high-quality coal. U.S. export coal competes with supplies from other major suppliers, including Australia, Canada, Poland. If U.S. mining costs were lowered by at least $8 per ton in the year 2000, then coal exports would surge by a projected 46 percent, and U.S steam coal displaces significant quantities of foreign coal imports in Europe. To find out if there are any potential savings in "in-the-wall haulage for open pits," the Swedish companies ASEA and Kiruna-Truck in 1984 gave us financial support to study this solution in more detail. In the study, the use of in-the-wall haulage was studied for three hypothetical open pits with different sizes and shapes. Annual ore production rates also varied. A part of this thor¬ough study was published by the Swedish Mining Research Foundation (see Report F 8444, "The Use of Electric Trucks and In-the-Wall Haulage in Open-Pit Mining," in Swedish with an English Summary). Although in-the-wall haulage is of interest in some open pits, the local terrain is important for profitability. The authors do not think in-the-wall haulage is of any major interest for the mining industry. The following is a summary of some of the author's findings. To place the haul road in the wall is not of interest in open pits with declining metal contents in the bedrock. In such mines, the volumes from the haul roads will not yield reve¬nues. The cost per m3 for an underground haul road is much higher than for a haul road in the pit. This means that it is only of interest to place the haul road in the wall when mining gets deeper than about 50 m (165 ft). In-the-wall haul roads will reduce flexibility in the pit, and it will make necessary the use of smaller equipment with lower productivity and higher costs per ton. As Hustrulid, et al. show (Table 4), excavation savings of material hauled are very low, $0.10 to $0.25/t (0.09 to 0.27 per st). The extra operating cost, due to lower productive equip¬ment, will normally be much higher and thus destroy the whole idea with in-the-wall haulage. If electric trucks are profitable for in-the-wall haulage, it is normally also profitable to use electric trolley assist for trucks on the haul road in the pit. But the profitability of using electric power is different in different countries, and depends on the relation between the cost for electric power and diesel fuel. In the US, diesel fuel is inexpensive compared with electricity, but in a country like Sweden, diesel fuel is much more expensive. In most open pits, the trucks have to move a considerable distange from the loader until they reach a final haul road in the wall. A trolley line along such temporary haul roads will be exposed to flyrock. It is normally less expensive to perform rock support from the open pit than from underground ramps in the wall. In Fig. 8, Hustrulid et al. gives the impression that the underground haul roads will be very close to each other. This is seldom the case. Figure 1 shows a haul road in the wall. The haul road passes through each cross-section only once. Ar¬ranging a reliable dewatering and rock support system from only one underground ramp is probably impossible. Many more drifts are therefore necessary. In our report, we also studied what would happen if the final pit slope is increased by 5°, using underground drifts in the wall. Our conclusion was that the extra cost for drifts, rock support, pumps, etc. destroys the whole idea, and that it was better to accept a higher stripping ratio with the haul road in the pit and to use conventional low-cost open pit equipment. Finally, we think it is would be difficult to try to reduce the safety factor when determining the slope angle by moving the haul road in the wall. Minimizing the risk for pit wall collapse is also important with in-the-wall haulage, primarily because men and equipment will be working in the pit, but also to guarantee many accesses between the pit and the haul road in the wall.

Introduction A computer program was developed for analyzing drum-type hoists before modifying an existing system or designing a new one. Its use permits the preliminary evaluation of a system before seeking technical assistance from mine hoist designers and manufacturers. The user-friendly program accepts a variety of data and analyzes hoisting systems for any balance state. The program can be used to calculate skip capacity to yield a desired production rate, solve for drum face width, select a permissible wire rope, estimate total horsepower of the hoist plant, and estimate annual power cost. Whether required for a large mining complex or for a relatively small operation, a hoisting system must be carefully designed to ensure the efficient, reliable, and safe flow of material. Because shaft sinking and hoist installation can total between 2.5% and 3% of the cost of opening a deep mine, proper hoist selection is critical. Today's mining engineer has at his disposal the most powerful design and analytical aid ever, the micro- computer. There is, unfortunately, limited software for the study of hoisting systems, unlike that for other materials handling equipment (Manula and Albert, 1980; Prelaz et al., 1964; Bucklen, 1969; Thompson, 1985). HOIST reduces a time-consuming set of calculations to a concise package of interrelated subprograms. A literature review revealed no common-user pro- grams to analyze hoisting systems, although at least four major hoist designers/manufacturers/installers have their own in-house programs. To provide a tool with which the mining engineer could preliminarily analyze a materials hoisting system or could check the calculations of a hoist contractor, a computer program was developed. HOIST was written in BASIC for the IBM-PC for ease of program adaptation and to en- courage field use on compatible systems. Details of program development are omitted, since the basic principles of hoisting analyses are relatively straightforward, simple, and readily accepted (Har- mon, 1973; Nordberg, n.d.; Adler, 1957). Program features, intended usage, and benefits of the com- puterized solution are emphasized over theory development and mathematical rigor. Background The mine hoist system that is selected and installed at a mine is the "lifeline" of that mine, with installations lasting 20 years or more. Thorough study is warranted to ensure that productivity demands are met at a minimum cost per ton. The increased cost of a large, powerful, high-speed hoist must be offset by increased production to justify its selection. To optimize this tradeoff, an extensive hoisting analysis should be performed. The analyses to properly size the skip (or cage ) , the drum, and the hoist drive are conducive to computerization, permitting rapid evaluation of changeable operating and design parameters, such as velocity, acceleration, state of balance, and productivity demand. The program is particularly useful in conducting sensitivity trials, such as investigation into the effect of change of productivity on skip capacity and on horsepower of the hoist drive. HOIST is currently limited to the study of drum-type hoists with cylindrical drum(s). However, only minor changes to the program would permit analysis of friction hoists and conical drum configurations. Model development and testing The program is based on accepted equations and physical relationships. Examples of manual calculations formed the basis for decision points and program branching. Data is input in the order that it would be needed if the problems were solved manually. The choices are arranged likewise. HOIST was developed in sections, with manual solutions performed to check program logic. The testing became more rigorous as sections were completed. Output from one section becomes input for following sections, as appropriate. The simplified flow diagram of HOIST is given in Fig. 1.

The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America reports that an underground mine is the most difficult environment to illuminate (Rea, 2000). Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) are conducting ongoing studies designed to explore different lighting technologies for improving mine safety. Underground miners use different visual cues to escape from a smoke-filled environment. Primary and secondary escapeways are marked with reflective ceiling tags of various colors. Miners also look for mine rail tracks. The main objective of this paper is to compare different lighting types and ceiling tag colors to differentiate what works best in a smoke-filled environment. Various cap lamps (LED and incandescent) and lasers (red, blue, green) were compared to see which options resulted in the longest detection distances for red, green and blue reflective markers and a section of mine rail track. All targets advanced toward the human subject inside of a smoke-filled room to simulate the subject walking in a mine environment. Detection distances were recorded and analyzed to find the best cap lamp, laser color and target color in a smoke environment. Results show that cap lamp, laser color and target color do make a difference in detection distances and are perceived differently based on subject age. Cap lamps were superior to lasers in all circumstances of ceiling tag detection, with the exception of the green laser. The incandescent cap lamp worked best in the simulated smoke compared to the LED cap lamps. The green laser was the best color for detecting the tags and track compared to the red and blue lasers. The green tags were the easiest color to detect on the ceiling. On average, the track was easier for the subjects to detect than the ceiling tags.

The threat of global warming and its prominent position in public discussion and political debate requires all industry to take stock of its contribution to rising atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. For the primary metals industry, the first step must be to identify the pattern and range of emissions at each step in the production chain. Only then can the industry assess the economic consequences of the penalties on emissions that will be imposed by governments and regulators and devise cost-effective plans to avoid or mitigate such penalties. While some work has been done to estimate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using Life Cycle Inventory analysis, this approach is less useful than site-by-site emissions estimates. It is the level of specific emissions at each site that will ultimately deter-mine carbon taxation liabilities and participation in emissions trading schemes. Most mining companies have moved with the times to issue sustainability reports for their operations. But in the absence of any standardized reporting format, it is difficult to make useful comparisons between even the best-reported producers on a like-with-like basis. For this reason, Minecost.com modeled the use of fuels and energy used in mining, milling, shipping and metallurgical treatment to cover ?cradle-to-gate? emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from the production of the major base metals copper, zinc, lead and nickel. Greenhouse gas emissions ? overwhelmingly carbon dioxide ? are associated with the consumption of energy at every step in the production chain, from exploration through mining to the production of refined metal. Producers of primary metal employ diverse technologies to mine, mill, smelt and refine several different types of ore. Every orebody has its own special characteristics. In addition, most base metals are produced in concentrate that must be transported to smelters, with con-sequent emissions consequences.

Introduction The gas shortage is going to be with us for some time to come. If we can set aside political and industry rhetoric (along with subjective personal opinions), we still are confronted by two serious "facts of life": (1) for almost a decade the U.S. has been consuming natural gas at a greater rate than we have been finding new reserves; and (2) there is a finite amount of natural gas present within the earth&apos;s crust. Much of the known and easily exploitable sources of gas (the so-called "conventional" sources, such as the high permeability sand reservoirs of the Tertiary sequence along the Gulf Coast) already have been developed; their production is declining rapidly. The total producible reserves from conventional gas reservoirs amount to only 216 Tcf, less than an 11-year supply. However, several large potential resources of natural gas remain to be developed. These "unconventional sources" have low permeability and/or peculiar producing characteristics. The DOE program for development of these unconventional sources of gas is called the enhanced gas recovery (EGR) program. The primary goal of this program is to provide a data base of resource characterization and production technology that will lead to commercial development. DOE will encourage and support industry participation in developing and demonstrating technologies needed to reach this goal. Unconventional Resources Four major unconventional resources of gas have a high potential for commercial development. There are other unconventional sources (such as gas hydrates) that are too poorly defined to warrant a major development thrust at this time. The four unconventional sources of gas currently included in the EGR program are: 1. The carbonaceous shales of Devonian age in the Appalachian, Illinois, and Michigan sedimentary basins are the targets of the Eastern Gas Shales Project (EGSP). 2. The low permeability, low porosity so-called "tight" gas sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous/Lower Tertiary in the Rocky Mountain areas constitute the resource target for the Western Gas Sands Project (WGSP). 3. The free methane trapped in coal beds of both the eastern and western U. S. constitute the Methane from Coal Beds Project (MCBP). 4. The abnormally high pressured, high-temperature saltwater aquifers of the Texas-Louisiana gulf coast are targets of the Geopressured Aquifer Project (GPAP). Basic implementation strategy for these EGR projects involve (1) assessing and characterizing the resource potential of the resource; (2) conducting cost-shared field testing with industry to improve, develop, and demonstrate various stimulation and production technologies; (3) coordinating EGR activities within DOE and with other federal agencies (such as the Bureau of Mines) to minimize duplication; and (4) aiming all projects toward commercial development of the gas resources. EGSP What type of "geological animal" is the EGSP dealing with? While gas undeniably is related to the occurrence of natural fracture systems within the shale, the overall producing mechanism and precise location of fractured, gas-bearing locales within each basin is still poorly understood. Introduction The gas shortage is going to be with us for some time to come. If we can set aside political and industry rhetoric (along with subjective personal opinions), we still are confronted by two serious "facts of life": (1) for almost a decade the U.S. has been con¬suming natural gas at a greater rate than we have been finding new reserves; and (2) there is a finite amount of natural gas present within the earth&apos;s crust. Much of the known and easily exploitable sources of gas (the so-called "conventional" sources, such as the high permeability sand reservoirs of the Tertiary sequence along the Gulf Coast) already have been developed; their production is declining rapidly. The total producible reserves from con¬ventional gas reservoirs amount to only 216 Tcf, less than an 11-year supply. However, several large potential resources of natural gas remain to be developed. These "uncon¬ventional sources" have low permeability and/or peculiar producing characteristics. The DOE program for development of these unconventional sources of gas is called the enhanced gas recovery (EGR) program. The primary goal of this program is to provide a data base of resource characterization and production technology that will lead to commercial development. DOE will encourage and support in¬dustry participation in developing and demonstrating technologies needed to reach this goal. Unconventional Resources Four major unconventional resources of gas have a high potential for commercial development. There are other unconventional sources (such as gas hydrates) that are too poorly defined to warrant a major development thrust at this time. The four unconventional sources of gas currently included in the EGR program are: 1. The carbonaceous shales of Devonian age in the Appalachian, Illinois, and Michigan sedimentary basins are the targets of the Eastern Gas Shales Project (EGSP). 2. The low permeability, low porosity so-called "tight" gas sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous/Lower Tertiary in the Rocky Mountain areas constitute the resource target for the Western Gas Sands Project (WGSP). 3. The free methane trapped in coal beds of both the eastern and western U. S. constitute the Methane from Coal Beds Project (MCBP). 4. The abnormally high pressured, high-temperature saltwater aquifers of the Texas¬Louisiana gulf coast are targets of the Geopressured Aquifer Project (GPAP). Basic implementation strategy for these EGR projects involve (1) assessing and characterizing the resource potential of the resource; (2) conducting cost-shared field testing with industry to improve, develop, and demonstrate various stimulation and production technologies; (3) coordinating EGR activities within DOE and with other federal agencies (such as the Bureau of Mines) to minimize duplication; and (4) aiming all projects toward commercial development of the gas resources. EGSP What type of "geological animal" is the EGSP dealing with? While gas undeniably is related to the occurrence of natural fracture systems within the shale, the overall producing mechanism and precise location of fractured, gas¬bearing locales within each basin is still poorly understood. To put coal in its proper perspective as a source of energy for electric power production, we must first compare it to other energy sources. A report of the Atomic Industrial Forum dated February 1958 records a number of authoritative though widely varying predictions. The most optimistic of these states that by 1968 there will be a total U.S. capacity of about 6000 megawatts of nuclear power, if growth continues at the present rate. Other sources indicate over 200,000 megawatts of total electrical capacity in utility plants by 1968. This is only 3% nuclear. Therefore, 97% of our total power production will be from non-nuclear energy. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of energy sources of electric utility product- ion in the U.S. as reported by the Federal Power Commission in 1954. Note that less than one quarter of the total is hydro and about one half of the total is coal. For 1957, the Edison Electric Institute reports that of the total steam- electric generation in the U. S., 68.6% was by coal, 7.9% was by oil and 23.5% was by gas. This is an increase for coal and a decrease for oil and gas in those three years. Thus we can conclude that two-thirds of the steam-electric power in the U. S. is now generated by coal. Fig. 2 shows the major markets for coal for 1947 vs 1957. The greatest in- crease has been in the electric utility market, where it has more than doubled in the ten years. One-third of the total coal produced goes to the utilities which now represent coal?s major market. Utilities used 160 million tons of coal in 1957, and the estimated quantity for 1967 is 275 million tons, and for 1977 is 525 million tons. It is predicted that 85% of steam-electric power will be generated by coal in 1975.

Application of flotation for the removal of hydrophobic compounds from soils was studied. Bench scale flotation tests were conducted on artificially contaminated soil, using both conventional mechanically agitated machine and flotation column. Flotation parameters tested include surfactant collector type, conditioning time, flotation time, surfactant dosage, pulp pH, solid/liquid ratio in conditioning and pulp temperature. It is found that with conventional flotation 74% removal of the contaminant was achieved from soil particles in the range of 75-830 µm; with column flotation up to 80% of oil could be removed from the 250-830 µm soil fraction, and 65% from the 75-830 µm fraction. Flotation was found to have considerable potential for cleaning up contaminated soils.

Talc is an important industrial commodity due to its wide-ranging intrinsic properties; however, the presence of iron oxide hinders its industrial utilization. Herein, we report the purification of Pakistani talc through acid leaching assisted by chlorination techniques. Among various acids (i.e., HF, HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4, Aqua Regia, H3BO3, and CH3COOH), HF was the most effectual, removing up to 67% of iron oxide at optimized conditions of temperature, 90–95 °C; time, 120 min; HF concentration of 5%; and at a pH of 1. In the second step, chlorination of the talc sample was performed separately by both wet chlorination and dry chlorination. Wet chlorination was carried out using KMnO4 and HCl in slurry phase which shown about 52% removal of iron oxide, whereas dry chlorination with CaCl2 at high temperature attained about 48% removal of iron oxide from talc sample. Further, the wet chlorination of HF leached samples was also performed under optimized conditions which showed up to 87% iron oxide removal. The original and treated talc samples were characterized by EDX and XRD analysis to monitor the changes in the elemental and mineralogical composition of the talc. It can be concluded that HF leaching followed by wet chlorination is an effective method for the upgradation of low-grade Pakistani talc ores.

Breccia pipes are vertical pipe-like columns of rocks that provide conduits for fluid flow and open spaces for mineral precipitation, hence are focus areas for exploration. In the Gallinas Mountains, Lincoln County, New Mexico, there is recorded production of Cu, Pb, Ag, F, Fe, REE (as bastnäsite), and Au from 1902 to 1980, but no production reported from the breccia pipes. Previous studies described the occurrence of REE in breccia pipes, but their transportation and deposition controls are still unclear. The aim of this research is to characterize the magmatic-hydrothermal breccia pipes in order to understand the geochemical and physical conditions of deposition of REE and gold in the breccia pipes found in the Gallinas Mountains. There are more than 20 exposed breccia pipes that form a NE-trending belt about 3–5 kilometers, mostly gray-brown and consist of angular- to sub-rounded rock fragments, some host high concentrations of REE (80,500 ppm total REE) and Au (175 ppb). Preliminary studies suggest they are magmatic and intruded into the host rock and, subsequently, hydrothermal fluids precipitated F-REE and Au along the edges of some breccia pipes. More studies are underway to test this hypothesis.

INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties because it doesn&apos;t have the financial resources to pay for the development costs from its own funds and doesn&apos;t have the financial strength which will enable it to borrow the money needed for development. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a financing can be arranged for the small mining company. This paper is an attempt to describe the fundamental steps on how such financing can be obtained --in other words--what is required to provide ad- equate capital at a low cost for developing and bringing a mining property into production. Innovative financing follows from this. The basic keys for building and maintaining a successful mining company are "the four M&apos;s": Management, Market, Mine, and Money. The writer believes their order of importance is as presented and each is a building block required in order to obtain the type of financing that best suits the borrower and lender. MANAGEMENT Management must be experienced, highly organized, realistic, able to take advantage of opportunities and fulfill promises. Mine financing requires a variety of skills and concentration on the part of management. Management should have a thorough understanding derived from experience in geology, construction, mining and metallurgy and environment, marketing, and financial matters. Management must realistically visualize what will be produced at what cost and truly evaluate the risks associated so the proper security can be correctly designed. Since risk cannot be eliminated, the objective of management is to identify the risk which will be present in a given venture and assess the level of that risk which will be acceptable to the firm. Generally the risk which is present is subject to little or no modification. After management identifies and measures the acceptable risk the firm will proceed in a way that it will be least exposed. Management must determine its long-term objectives and strategies within the context of a constantly changing world. This question must be addressed before examining the sorts of risk which affect the development and operation of a specific property. The compilation and interpretation of "hard data" by competent people is good to a point but the experience and instinct of seasoned individuals are the important factors in management choosing a long-term direction for the corporation. The attitude towards risk greatly affects the goals of the corporation. Major risks in a mining project can be placed in four categories: 1. Market - Price, demand, substitution. 2. Costs - Capital, operating, financial. 3. Regulation. 4. Taxation. The feasibility study for a project is the fundamental tool used in the management of risk. Management should employ an experienced team with an established and well-understood set of ground rules for the preparation and assembly of a feasibility study. The necessary degree of realism is built into all levels of the study and if the project is technically feasible, the company&apos;s hurdle rate is then used to discount the base-case project cash flow in order to determine its financial viability. Understanding the geological significance of the mineral deposit is critical. There should be strong interplay among the pure regional geologist, the detailed mine geologist, the mining engineer, and the metallurgical engineer. The collaboration among these different disciplines will yield a feasibility study that is more reliable. The essence of this work must be appreciated and understood by the executives planning the financing. It is vital that they thoroughly understand the risks and make the proper risk assessments to cope with our rapidly changing market environment. Projecting future revenue values is paramount and is subject to much estimation. One way to mitigate fluctuations and the risk of falling prices is by selling production for future delivery. MARKET Since mining is a worldwide industry it is mandatory that bankers be aware of what is occurring in the marketplace, both foreign and domestic.
