"INTRODUCTION It can be vital that bolted joints holding subassemblies together remain secure. Bolts should resist the loosening effects of vibrations and dynamic loads yet need to be easily removable during maintenance. When a threaded fastener is subjected to vibration, the rapid movement causes a lowering of friction against the threads and a subsequent loss of preload. The loss of preload allows the fastener to vibrate loose and possibly fall out. As the diameter of fasteners increase desired preload becomes increasingly more difficult to achieve. Input torque requirements for achieving proper bolt preload is exponentially related to any given fasteners diameter. This means that specialized tooling or bolting practices are usually required to attempt the tightening of fasteners to reach their required preload. Traditional methods can cause problems with joint integrity and do not provide consistent bolt load across the bolted surface. BOLTED CONNECTIONS A failed critical bolted joint can lead to high maintenance costs, machine downtime, and risk to worker safety. Control of the clamp load in a bolted joint is vital. However, when faced with a problem joint, it is not surprising that the design engineer will not have an answer if asked about the clamp load. Torque calculations must always be based on the existing conditions that often are vague. Unless all parameters are correct, the calculation will be unreliable. Examples of parameters are: • Thread condition of the fasteners • Hardness of contact surface • Material (steel, aluminium, copper, etc.) • Extra friction from a locking fastener • Extra friction from an adhesive • Lubricant on the thread • Type of bolt head (flanged, regular or serrated) • Surface coating of the bolt • New or reused fastener During tightening, bolts are subjected to both tensile and torsional stress. The total stress in a bolt can be calculated using the formula: Total stress = vsx2 + 3txy2 In order to maximize the desired tensile stress (sx) it is vital to minimize the torsional stress (txy). Tensile stress (clamp load) is achieved when the bolt is axially elongated. Unwanted torsional stress (twisting) in bolts arises during tightening due to thread friction. High thread friction increases torsional stress and causes yielding at lower clamp load levels than normal. A lubricant is necessary to minimize the malign torsional stress. However, many commonly used bolt-locking systems are based on increased thread friction (deformed nuts, adhesives, etc). To minimize thread friction and concurrently safely secure the joint has often incorrectly been considered impossible. The use of locking systems that increase thread friction is the single most common reason why the full capacity of bolted joints is not utilized. The following example illustrates the problem."

"INTRODUCTION Tunnel is a closed space structure and it is necessary to ensure the sufficient time and route for safe evacuation for the tunnel users in case of a tunnel fire. In order to do so, damages and collapse of the tunnel linings and the secondary disasters can be avoided. Furthermore, the road tunnel is one of important infrastructural facilities and stopping its function for a long time for a tunnel fire could cause a great economic loss. Therefore, the tunnel structure shall be the one which can be repaired as soon as possible, and the fire protection methods need to be selected among those which enable the service to start as early as possible. The necessity of the fire protection works is evaluated for the tunnel structure with the consideration of the expensive tunnel construction cost and the economic effects of the tunnel service. Naturally, the fire protection works, which can protect the tunnel linings from the tunnel fire with small repairs, are inevitable. Design engineers of the fire protection works estimate the scale of fire from the degree of damages on the linings and its repair cost, the effect of fire extinguishers placed inside of the tunnel, the secondary disasters in accordance with the tunnel lining damages if any, and the ratio of fire protection cost calculated from tunnel operation cost. Based on this information, the engineers design the fire protection works according to the permissible limits Among the design cases of the tunnel fire protection in Japan, as shown in Table 1, there is no cases that used the fire temperature-time curve to design the fire protection works for large fire caused by vehicles catching fire. However, the most of cases used 30-60 minutes for fire duration based on the entry prohibition of dangerous goods carrying vehicles or the effect of early fire fighting. This paper will study the variation between different methods used for fire protection in road tunnel in Japan to evaluate them and try to found some recommendations. Especial l care will be attention to Polypropylenes (PP) which is starting to be applied lately."

A subsequent spin off of the energy shortage is the new life for barite. Over 90% of the barite produced in the world is used as a weighting material in oil well drilling muds. Business is booming; the price of barite has risen; scarcity is imminent, and exploration is going full steam ahead. New barite-producing companies are being formed and many of the barite consumers are considering becoming producers. Prospectors have found a new "love," smaller deposits are being explored, and old deposits, previously rejected, are getting a reappraisal. Even barite tailing piles are being resampled.

Isa Limestone Quarry with an annual production capacity of 18 million metric tons is known as the largest limestone deposit in Japan located in the mountainous region about 20 mile northwest of Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan adjacent to Isa Cement Factory to which it belongs, and which constitutes a mainstay of Ube Industries? cement operating division. Isa Cement Factory is equipped with a N.S.P. kiln of capacity of 3 million metric tons per year, which is the largest of its type in the world. Geographically, it is situated in the south- western tip of the Mainland of Japan (Mid City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) and is bordered by the scenic Akiyoshi Karstic Plateau which is world famous for its huge stalactite grotto.

Large reserves of high calcium limestone have been outlined in the Redwall formation at Nelson, Arizona. Geologic mapping, core drilling and shallow seismic refraction studies have outlined more than 100 million tons of high quality, chemical and metallurgical grade limestone in the Mooney Falls member of the Mississippian Redwall Limestone. Well developed Karst zones in the Redwall were delineated by field mapping, seismic profiling and core drilling. Development of large reserves of high quality, thick beds of limestone near the present mine and rail facilities was the basis for the current mine and plant expansion. When completed in 1978 the planned 1800 Tpd production will represent the largest lime operation in the Western United States.

As part of the British Steel Corporation?s development plan during the 1970?s, it was decided to concentrate its bulk steelmaking processes based on the BOS at 4 major Works with access to deepwater ore terminals, for the supply of high-grade imported ores. These 4 sites were at: - 1. Rarenscraig Works in Scotland where the ore terminal would be hilt at Hunterston on the west coast some 50 miles away. Bavenscraig was already an integrated Works but suffered from having to discharge ore 27 Glasgow tenxinus on the River Clyde, which could only accommodate vessels up to 25,000 tonnes. In the future, ore was to be unloaded at Runterston and shipped by a rail-link into Ravenscraig, The new ore terminal would have the potential to unload vessels up to 300,000 tonnes. - 2. Port Talbot Works in south Vales where the existing harbour was developed to discharge large ore carriers. This again was an existing Integrated Works and the benefits of the new harbour also applied to Llanwern Works which was another integrated Works some 50 dies to the east, which would now receive ore from Port Talbot.

Potash is a generic term that includes potassium chloride, potassium magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate, potassium nitrate, and sodium-potassium nitrate mixtures. In the ceramics industry, potash is also used to refer to potassium oxide. Potash, primarily in the form of potassium carbonate, was the first industrial mineral produced in the United States, and the first US patent issued was for an apparatus and process developed in 1790 for its production (Paynter, 1990). Prior to the 1860s, potash was primarily sold as an impure form of potassium carbonate produced by burning hard- wood trees and leaching the potassium salts from the ashes. The major early uses of potash include soap and glass making, dyeing fabrics, baking, and saltpeter for gunpowder. In 1859, the development of a purification process to remove the sodium and magnesium chlorides was developed for the carnallite found at Stassfurt, Germany, and mined potash became available. With the appearance of mined potash and the earlier (1840) discovery in Germany by Justus von Liebig that potash was a nutrient for crops, potash started to be used for high valued crops such as cotton and vegetables. The German potash companies quickly developed a manufacturing process for producing potassium sulfate for tobacco fertilization. German potash supplied nearly all American needs until the embargo of the First World War when imports from Germany were interrupted (Bateman, 1918). With the discovery of potash deposits in New Mexico in 1931, the United States became self-sufficient in potash. In 1962, the United States began importing potash from Canada, and two years later domestic apparent consumption began to exceed domestic production. Along with nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium is one of the three essential plant nutrients, the "K" of NPK terminology. As a result, 95% of potash production is used as plant fertilizer. In all plants, inadequate potassium diminishes growth, causes increased disease, stalk and stem breakage, and susceptibility to other stress conditions. Plants take up large quantities of potassium from the soil, and potash fertilization replaces this loss so that each new crop can be grown with the same vigor and productivity as the previous year's crop. The potassium depletion of the soil from growing repeated cotton and tobacco crops is well known in the history of southern agriculture in America. George Washington was known to have studied alternative crops that could be grown on soil that had been depleted by repeated tobacco crops. Most of the remaining 5% of potash consumption is by the chemical industry, as potassium hydroxide to produce soaps and detergents, glass and ceramic products, dyes, explosives, alkaline batteries, and medicines. Potash as chemical is used in oil field drilling mud, the aluminum recycling industry, and the electroplating industry. Additional minor uses for potassium chloride include water softener regeneration, sidewalk deicing, and salt substitution for human consumption. Potash is used in the food industry as potassium phosphate, and in production of glass products as potassium carbonate or nitrate. GEOLOGY Potassium is the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust and the sixth most abundant element in seawater. It is found in silicate minerals of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks and is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines. The majority of world potash resources are found in subsurface bedded salt deposits which yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies and are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. Because of the relatively high solubility of potassium minerals, potash from salt deposits is ideal for use as fertilizers. Some potash production is from evaporation of naturally occurring brines, but the vast majority of current domestic and international production is from bedded salt deposits. Sylvite, carnallite, kainite, and langbeinite are some of the more important potassium minerals (Table 1). Sylvinite, a mixture of KC1 and NaCl is the highest grade potash ore. Carnallite can be considered a potash ore when removal of magnesium chloride is included in the beneficiation, but it can also be considered a contaminant when mining for sylvite. Potassium sulfate and potassium nitrate are typically manufactured products. Potassium sulfate is produced from mined minerals through conversion processes in Italy, Germany, and Carlsbad, NM, and from brines in southern California and at the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Natural deposits of potassium nitrate occur only in small amounts in Chile. The majority of potash-bearing bedded salt deposits are believed to have originated from the evaporation of seawater or mixtures of seawater and other brines in restricted marine basins (Schmalz, 1969). The reflux depositional model for evaporite deposition was first described in the literature in 1888 by Ochsenius. A shallow bar, or sill, across the mouth of a basin lets in a restricted flow of seawater which evaporates into a salt-precipitating brine (Fig. 1). The density of the brine at the distal end increases with increased salinity, sinks to the bottom, and sets up a reflux current of higher density brine back toward the ocean. The sill, which restricts the inflow of seawater, allows inhibited flow of evaporation-concentrated brines back to the ocean. The least soluble salts are precipitated nearer the sill, and the most soluble components come out of solution in the deeper parts of the basin. The result is a lateral facies change in a tabular-shaped deposit that is due to the salinity gradients in the brine (Fig. 2A). The asymmetrical facies distribution of the Paradox Formation (Middle Pennsylvanian) Utah (Hite, 1970), the Prairie Formation (Middle Devonian) in Saskatchewan (Holter, 1972), and the Salado Formation (Upper Permian) in New Mexico (Lowenstein, 1988), might prompt explanation by such a model. Other deposits, such as the Salina Formation (Upper Silurian) in Michigan (Matthews and Egleson, 1974), show a facies distribution that could be described as a bull's eye pattern. Although some small subbasins of high grade sylvite are found near the margins, the potash is generally located in a central part of the basin surrounded by successively less soluble facies (Fig. 2B). A series of performance studies have been conducted using counter-current column flotation to recover a marketable clean coal product from existing preparation plant fine waste streams. The test work was conducted at several preparation plant sites in Kentucky and Virginia and utilized a 0.15m (6 in.) I.D. column that was 5.79m (19 ft.) high. The refuse streams tested included both thickener feed and classifying cyclone overflow with a typical size distribution of 100 mesh X O. The percent solids of the column flotation feed varied from 1.5 to 15% while the ash content ranged from 30-60%. The concentrates produced contained 2-10% ash with BTU recoveries of nearly 90% using 0.12-1.25 kg/ton (0.25-2.5 lbs/ton) fuel oil and 0.12 kg/ton (0.25 lb/ton) MIBC. These results were consistent with or better than results obtained in preliminary laboratory scale column flotation evaluation. Test results from 7 different seams are discussed as well as scale-up relationships utilized to design a full scale installation presently in operation.

"From 2011–2016 there were 1,511 documented injures, including 7 fatalities, from ground falls in U.S. underground coal mines. The majority of these ground fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely utilized in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program at the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in Pittsburgh, PA. The load-displacement characteristics of a 2.4-m x 3.7-m panel of 8-gauge welded screen were evaluated using a newly designed, large laboratory screen test frame with multiple load pull locations. This screen was tested in a configuration that simulates current installation practices in U.S. coal mines. In this study, the effects of displacement loading rate, load pull surface geometry, and the inclusion of roof channel on the screen performance were evaluated. Ultimately, the type of information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to aid in developing wire roof screen design criteria and to assist mine operators in the selection and use of roof screen in underground mines. INTRODUCTION Over 1,500 injures, including 7 fatalities, occurred from 2011–2016 from ground falls in U.S. underground mines with the majority of these ground-fall injuries caused by falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Various controls are currently being used in mines to control this surface rock, including the use of wire roof screen. In mines where wire roof screen has been installed, injuries from rock falls have been reduced dramatically (Robertson and Hinshaw, 2001). Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Comptonet al., 2007). Because of this potential for reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL)."

Subsidence events occurring above inactive room-and-pillar (R&P) mines, including abandoned mines or sealed portions of active mines, are classified as unplanned subsidence, because of their timing and distribution are unpredictable. When investigating such subsidence cases, many uncertainties exist and disputes often focused on whether the observed structural damages are caused by mine subsidence or other natural or artificial causes. However, solid evidence to identify the cause is often lacking. In order to conduct a complete and impartial investigation, thorough knowledge of subsidence theories and other ground control topics, as well as broad experience, are required.

The steepness of an openpit mine’s slopes has a substantial influence on the mine’s financial return. This paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice, pitwall profiles are often planar in cross section within each rock layer: that is, the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. Here, instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is used to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth-varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties and factor of safety (FoS).

Why did it fail? My first reaction when assigned this topic was to say: because somebody "goofed"--then thank you all for letting me say those few words, then promptly sit down. All of you have been bandying this problem around for many years--so all of a sudden I should come up with the solution. Well, While I might not provide you with your particular answer, I think I can show you some of the resolutions to it. Somewhere along your path of experience you may have discovered that a good formula for starting a fight is to tell a group of dedicated (Nordberg Crusher) users they should be using (Allis-Chalmers), or a group of (Allis-Chalmers) 'users they should be a (Traylor). Now, if you really want a melee, get both groups together and tell them they should be using a (Stedman Cage Mill). This is one sure way you can learn how great minds arrive at logical, well thought-out conclusions, based on all the relevant facts. Why did it fail? I could go on for hours giving you specific reasons why. One of my engineering professors used to start his new class off each year by writing on the blackboard--four and two, then turn to the class and ask: What is the problem? One brave scholar would venture to answer 8. His head would shake no. Another would dare 6. Again, a head shake. Now that the ball had gotten rolling, a number would vocally decide it had to be two, which produced only another shake of the head--no. All of them had missed the question he had asked : What is the problem? What he had gotten ,were some of the possible answers to the problem.

The economics of pellet plant operation, in terms of fuel and power consumption, flexibility in the selection of the cheapest fuel source, system availability, maintenance costs, and the simplicity of process design, contribute to the determination of building and profitably operating a pellet plant. Design innovations, sup- ported by actual field data, have been initiated into the GRATE-KILN System design to positively address these factors. This paper presents the recent state of the art design concepts which have helped the GRATE- KILN System assume worldwide acceptance status.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, longwall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air and spray water in an effort to control respirable dust and/or methane. Air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high velocities. The greatest likelihood for entraining dust into the high velocity airstream may occur as shields are advanced allowing relatively dry particles to fall from the shield canopy directly into the airstream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation during shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 8.2 m/s (400 to1600 fpm). Airborne dust samples were obtained with personal impactors to quantify the size distribution and concentration of the dust entrained at the various air velocities. Statistically significant increases in both total and respirable dust concentrations were measured as test air velocities were increased.

Maintaining an acceptable thermal environment in South African gold mines becomes increasingly difficult as mining progresses to greater depths where higher virgin rock temperatures are encountered. Current environmental practice offsets the resulting high heat loads by installing large refrigeration plants. However, with the continued escalation of refrigeration costs, it has become necessary to examine other methods for economically combatting the underground heat load. The Chamber of Mines Research Organization has recently been pursuing a programme to devise methods of reducing the flow of heat into underground workings at source. Although there are several sources of heat (such as machinery, men, and explosives), the most significant is that from the rock mass surrounding the workings (Bluhm et al., 1986a). The main thrust of the work has therefore been directed at predicting and devising methods of reducing this heat source. A great deal of theoretical work has been carried out on the prediction of underground heat flow. From a review of this work (Bluhm et al., 1986b) it became apparent that there are two major aspects which require attention, namely algorithms for predicting the heat flow around the advancing stope face, and a correlation of the theoretical work with accurate empirical data. In order to remedy this situation, new theoretical models have been developed (von Glehn and Bluhm, 1986), and heat flow measurements have been made in both a conventional stope (Bluhm et al, 1986a) and in a backfilled stope (Matthews u., 1987). A number of methods for reducing rock heat flow are being examined. These include the insulation of intake airways (Bottomley, 1985 ), backfilling with waste material of the worked out areas, and alternative approaches to the design of mining layouts, the mining method, and the choice of cooling strategy. This paper highlights the heat load reductions that can be achieved by backfilling the worked-out areas and by adopting concentrated mining. The first part of this paper summarizes the results of the measurements obtained in the conventional and backfilled stopes. The theoretical models are then described and comparisons are made with the measured values.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitted from diesel engines is currently considered to be a health problem in underground mines. As a result, attempts have been made to control DPM both by reducing emission rates and by managing the DPM that gets into the mine atmosphere. This paper presents a method for modeling the generation, transfer and distribution of DPM in the mining sections through the use of a convection-based computer model so that controls for emitted DPM can be evaluated. A variety of ventilation strategies and diesel deployment schemes for room-and-pillar development sections were simulated to compare their effects on average DPM concentrations at several fixed and mobile personnel locations in the section. Input data for the model was gathered from actual diesel development sections and derived from experimental study results provided by other researchers. Studied using the model were ventilation schemes using vent tubing and brattice, exhaust location strategies on the vehicles, and the direction of ventilation at the feeder-breaker location. A summary of results from this study will be presented.

Quartz has been of interest in occupational health for years because it can cause silicosis after prolonged exposure. New OSHA regulations (Air Contaminant; Final Rule) list perlite as a nuisance dust. They conclude that perlite is nontoxic when air-borne total particulate concentrations are 15 mg/m3 or below and when quartz content is less than 1% crystalline silica. OSHA has established an 8-hour PEL of 15 mg/m TWA for total perlite dust containing less than 1% quartz. OSHA has established a 5 mg/m3 TWA PEL for respirable perlite. These limits will protect workers from significant risk of eye, skin, or other physical irritation. This regulation is based on a Group 2A classification as a probable carcinogen in humans, at the 0.1% crystalline silica level, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC 1987a, b). IARC found sufficient evidence for carcinogenicity of crystalline silica in animals and limited evidence in humans. Perlite is not listed as a carcinogen by OSHA or the National Toxicology Program.

High-resolution seismic reflection profiling can be used to evaluate detailed struc¬tural and stratigraphic features of coal pros¬pects. Since most coal prospects are relatively shallow (less than six hundred meters deep), the vertical and lateral resolution of seismic data can be significantly improved by high sampling rates in space and time. The case study present¬ed shows the effective use of seismic data in evaluation of the Wyodak coal at a prospective coal gasification site. The data were used to map the detailed structure and thickness of the coal and to search for lateral discontinuities, such as pinchouts and. faults. An important find was a paleochannel cutting across the base of the coal seam, which was later confirmed by drilling.

Demand for nonfuel minerals depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1984. New housing starts rose to 1.8 million units. Automakers turned out about 15% more cars (7.8 million) and 30% more trucks (3.1 million) than in 1983. Nevertheless, many domestic mineral operations experienced difficulties in 1984. This resulted from import competition greater use of newer engineered materials, emphasis on multi-unit housing and downsizing of motor vehicles. About 15% of our energy was imported. This in cluded $36 billion worth of crude oil and $22 billion in refined products This added significantly to the overall merchandise trade deficit of $12; billion. On the bright side for mining, coal production rose 14% to 810 Mt (890 mil lion st). Three-fourths o: the coal was burned to generate electricity and more than half of our electricity was derived from coal-burning plants. With the exception of a few large-bulk, low-value raw minerals, most minerals move relatively freely in world trade. The strong dollar encouraged imports and made exporting more difficult. Consequently, our nonfuel minerals trade deficit rose 60% to $19 billion, reflecting imports of $39 billion and exports of $20 billion. There were increased pressures from some major segments of the minerals industry for some form of import protection. But President Reagan said, "Our goal is a system of free and fair trade in goods, services, and capital. We will work toward this goal through both bilateral and multilateral trading agreements." The US minerals industry consists of domestic mines, concentrators, smelters, refineries, mineral manufacturing plants, and recyclers. It also includes many wholly- or partially-owned operations in many parts of the world, providing employment and income for US citizens and others as well. Compared with 1983, the value of US raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8%, to $23 billion. The $253 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output was a 14% increase. Major Metals Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production-rose 10%, to 84 Mt (93 million st). This stimulated a 36% rise in domestic iron ore production, to 52 Mt (57 million st), about 98% pelletized. Iron ore imports rose 44%, to 14 Mt (15 million st). Despite the increase of steel production, output remained well below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1984 production was still 23% less than in 1981. "First Majestic Silver Corp. (FMS) is a silver mining company founded in 2002 that operates exclusively in Mexico. It has six producing silver mines, one of which is the La Encantada silver mine (La Encantada) located in the state Coahuila. La Encantada is located near the southern United States border and 708 km (440 miles) north of the city Torreon.La Encantada is located in the Sierra Madre Oriental and is a high-temperature carbonate replacement deposit. Mineralization in La Encantada occurs in many different forms such as veins, chimneys, breccia pipes and reefs (mantos). Mineralization is mainly oxides of iron, zinc, lead and manganese, with high concentrations of sulfides at depth relating to two main intrusive events: the Milagros Intrusive and the La Prieta Skarn.Mining began in La Encantada during the 1950s with small vertical shafts, drifts and raises. It focuses on the high-grade silver zones using traditional hoists and extraction methods, before branching into two main separate mining camps: El Plomo and Penoles camp. Penoles, the previous owner, focused mainly on large ore bodies using post pillar cut-and-fill mining method to extract the higher-grade material. Due to the type of ground, irregularity of pillars, and rock conditions, large amounts of high-grade pillars had to be left in situ to ensure the stability of the excavations. The mined-out areas would then be filled with lower-grade material to assist in the stability of the secondary level. These room-and-pillar development entries were 2.5 m x 2.5 m (8.2 ft x 8.2 ft) and spaced every 10 m (32 ft), leaving a vertical pillar of 7.5 m (25 ft). First Majestic acquired La Encantada in 2006. After the acquisition of the mine, the company began the conversion of the surveying reference system from a local grid (Maria Isabel Shaft as 0,0) to the Nav27 coordinate system, and subsequently converted to the WGS84 coordinate system in 2015. Due to the extensive history of the mine, different areas were surveyed with different systems, causing significant challenges when designing the principal extraction levels, pillar heights and ramp locations. To overcome this difficulty, the entire mine was resurveyed and the old workings transposed to the new coordinate system, except for some inaccessible areas due to poor ground conditions or ground collapses. To further ensure pillar height and the safety of the mine workers, probe holes were drilled during the development process."
