The use of clay granules as carriers for pesticides dates from the early 1940's and by the present day represents a business conservatively estimated at between 200 - 300 thousand tons / year in the U.S. alone. Aside from economic and specific target pest efficacy advantages, the use of clay granules as pesticide carriers also delivers a number of environmental benefits which will be reviewed. Topics to be discussed will include: 1) drift control (versus liquid sprays), 2) mobility (in the environment), 3) worker safety, and 4) transportation (spill) safety.

Geological interpretations generally require projections from direct observations at the earth's surface. Crustal projections include mineral deposits as well as the geochemistry of the crust and its fluids, structure and tectonics. Drilling offers opportunities for verification of the required projections, and is thus a required step in furthering crustal understanding. Like any new science, the direct observations that drilling provides commonly generate major surprises and stimulate totally new ideas. Drilling is costly. There are many critically important scientific problems with societal and potential economic benefits in mineral deposits which have not been drilled because the holes are difficult to justify as economically sound risks for private capital. Such holes, however, are highly justifiable research goals for government because of the significant new opportunity for ore deposit insight and exploration that they afford. The earth science community is prepared with excellent drilling projects for research in mineral deposits.

The paper covers the development of an efficient, "state-of-the-art" design approach encapsulating extensive research and development by Gulf on soft loading, low impact, zero spillage transfer chutes. The development, which interacts and interfaces the comprehensive methodologies for transfer chute design, allows Gulf to deliver detailed designs within 8-24 hours rather than the norm which is weeks or months. Outputs include 3D models of completed transfers and support structures along with rendered 3D representations of the design which can be fully manipulated around all axis in 3D.

This paper summarizes the research effort in simulating the operation of "Underground Coarse-Coal Hydrotransport Systems" (UCCHS). The equipment of the system to be simulated is already optimally selected by using an analytical optimization model. The purpose of the simulation model is to test the performance of the system and to obtain the distributions of operating parameters such as water and power consumption and amount of slurry delivered to the preparation plant. Knowledge of the distributions of these parameters is essential for the efficient operation of the system.

The 21st Annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Sheraton Tucson Hotel in Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker at the banquet will be Thomas J. O’Neil, recently retired president and chief operating officer of Cleveland Cliffs Mining. Prior to Cliffs, O’Neil spent 10 years with Cyprus Minerals. He was also professor and head of the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct James Boyd and Thomas F. Walsh. Walsh discovered a rich gold telluride vein in Ouray, CO, which became the Camp Bird gold mine. Boyd was a former director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, vice president of Kennecott Copper and later president of Copper Range.

Sustainable development has brought social, environmental and energy efficiency concerns together with management and governance of natural resources. Cement manufacturing, an energy- and natural resource-intensive industry, is adapting to meet sustainable development goals. Emission standards for cement plants and increasing energy costs have lead to changes in the use of natural resources and recycled materials. Utilizing pozzolans or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as mineral admixtures in blended cement or as a substitute for cement in concrete lowers energy costs and CO2 emissions. Although the western U.S. is rich in natural pozzolans, artificial products, particularly fly ash, have greater use as mineral admixtures. Pozzolans and SCMs have many beneficial properties, such as preventing alkali-silica reactivity, a common problem in the western U.S. Barriers exist for mineral admixtures in the cement and concrete industries because of past inconsistencies in quality or availability. New environmental regulations on the primary industries producing artificial mineral admixtures could adversely affect the quality and quantity of these materials in the future.

Overcasts are indispensible ventilation control devices to permit one airway to pass over another without mixing in room and pillar coal mining. The airflow distribution inside the overcast depends on its spe-cific configuration at which the flow enters into it. This study uses 3D numerical simulation to examine the pressure and velocity distributions inside an overcast. The effects of the overcast angle on the flow field are also examined. The flow is assumed to be turbulent and isothermal and the standard k-e model is utilized. Simulated results display flow separation and recirculation regions of different sizes occurring not only upstream and downstream from the overcast but also inside it. The results also show that the size of the recirculation regions in-creased with the increase in the angle before and after the overcast influencing significantly the flow field and pressure losses. The stream-lines are plotted to show the 3D structure of the flow field. The results from the simulation can guide overcast design commonly used in un-derground coal mines. The Magmont Mine, a 50/50 venture between Cominco American Incorporated (the Operator) and Dresser Industries, Inc., (Halliburton), is a metallic mining and milling facility in the new lead belt of Missouri. The mine is located approximately 100 miles southwest of St. Louis. Legislation passed in 1992 by the Missouri legislature requires all metallic mining and processing facilities to apply for a Metallic Minerals Waste Management permit (MMWM) for their waste facilities. Regulations were subsequently promulgated by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Cominco obtained a MMWM permit (MM-006) from the Missouri DNR in 1992.

The area described in this paper lies along the inner margin of the Coastal' Plain in Twiggs County, near the exact center of the State of Georgia. Twiggs is one of four counties which produces approximately 75 per cent of the nationals output of kaolin used in the paper trade. In this vicinity the land surface is characterized by coastal plain hills with elevations ranging from about 250 feet, above mean sea level in the flood plain of: the Ocmulgee River to about 550 feet above mean sea level on the hill tops. Surface drainage in the area is southwestward to the Ocmulgee River, the tributaries of which have dissected the land surface exposing thick sections of the upper parts of the hills of Eocene (Ocala Limestone and Barnwell formation) limestone, sand, marl and clay, and in the lower parts of the hills Cretaceous (Tuscaloosa Formation) kaolin, kaolinitic clay, sandy clay, sand and, gravel. The contact between these two principal groups of geologic units is rather easil distinguished as the top of the kaolinitic beds. It is described in detail and mapped in published geologic reports for the area (LaMoreaux, 1946).

At long last, mining is on the rebound in Minnesota?s Iron Range and the excitement is starting to show. The SME Minnesota Section?s annual meeting was once again held in the heart of Iron Range country, at the Duluth Entertainment and Conference Center on the Duluth waterfront. The conference boasted a record attendance of 475 people and its largest-ever trade show. Appearances by Governor Mark Dayton?s new Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) appointee, Tony Sertich, as well as a local Fox news crew (see clip on SME website [link: http://fox21online.com/news/duluth-mining-conference-breeds-optimism-tech-innovation]) made clear that a lot of eyes [ ] are on the industry as it dusts itself off from the 2008-2009 recession. While the early years of the 21st century were very good to the Iron Range, the global drop in commodities prices and production left many companies reeling and brought back bad memories of the collapse of the industry in the 1980s. However, two years of solid growth and a rebound to above pre-2008 production levels have let the Minnesota mining industry to relax a little and talk seriously about long-term growth and stability.

Introduction During the last decade, the metallic minerals segment of the industry could be categorized as a "feast-or-famine" business. It is no secret that metallic minerals are cyclical. Employment opportunities greatly depend on the supply and demand for its mineral products. It is also not unusual for there to be a lag between the industry's manpower requirements and academia's ability to produce new graduates. Due to this lag, there will be years with manpower shortages, as in the mid-1970s. At other times, supply will exceed demand. The question is where will the jobs be in the years to come? This presentation will review reasons why employment opportunities have declined within the metallic minerals industry. It will also predict future demand for mineral engineering graduates. And it will outline strategies for obtaining an employment offer. Historical Review - Employment From 1977 through 1983, about 75% of all metal mining employees were directly engaged in production activities, down from 83% in 1965. This decline reflects increased use of labor saving equipment, and more government regulation and foreign competition. Metal mining's employment decreased from 74,000 jobs in 1982 to fewer than 68,000 in 1983 - an 8% decline. The overall industry is having these problems because of the general downturn in the economy. For example, at the beginning of this decade, US automobile and steel industries were in trouble. Interest rates were too high and volatile. This adversely affected construction, housing starts, and manufacturing. All these industries, being large users of base metals, drastically affected the metals industry. US copper companies are still having problems. Reports indicate that many copper employers have cut production, laid-off workers, and permanently closed mines, refineries, and smelters. A decline in the demand for US produced metal products, such as copper, obviously affects some mineral engineering employment opportunities. Other factors to consider when looking at employment opportunities and why it has become difficult for US metal producers to compete in the world market include: • The grades of ore bodies of many US minerals are considerably lower than the grades of ores being mined elsewhere in the world. • The grades of ore bodies currently being mined in the US are steadily declining. • Foreign producers are largely government controlled and are not necessarily subject to the realities of supply and demand. • US environmental regulations have considerably added to production costs. Foreign producers in most countries do not have to worry about these additional costs. • US mines are getting deeper. This adds to the cost of production because of the increasing distance the ore has to be transported. • Plants and equipment are outdated. Many companies find themselves operating with equipment and plants that need modernizing or replacing. This obviously hinders competitive productivity. • Labor and management have had problems. Work stoppages in certain mining businesses and high wage and benefit costs in relation to foreign producers place US producers at a disadvantage. • Much land is unavailable. The US government owns most of the land considered to have the best potential for minerals development. Most of this land is unavailable for mining or exploration. Therefore, it appears that finding employment with a company whose primary business is mining and processing most metals, such as copper, in the US will be quite restricted and competitive. Future Demand It is difficult to anticipate what key employment opportunities within the next few years will be available to mineral engineering graduates. The Engineering Manpower Commission estimated that US engineering schools awarded 72,471 undergraduate degrees in 1983 vs. 66,990 in 1982. This was the eighth consecutive year in which the number of baccalaureates awarded has increased. On a brighter note, the US government's Occupational Outlook Quarterly stated that the growth rate through 1995 for all engineers is an encouraging 49% over present levels. Mountain Top Removal (MTR) mining started in West Virginia nearly thirty years ago. This surface mining method can extract multiple coal seams as thin as a few inches thick with total recovery and minimum rock dilution in very steep mountainous terrain. It is highly efficient even if coal seams are in close proximity and small in aerial extent. Consequently, MTR has been widely used in the Central Appalachian Coalfield (mainly Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia) for the past thirty years with great success. In that respect, there has been no demand for research and little scientific research has been performed to investigate its impacts on the surroundings in the history of MTR mining. However, in the past two years the debate over the MTR mining has grown quickly and in times become very intensely. This paper describes chronologically the issues raised by various parties, legal actions, its impacts on mining permit application and research projects developed to address the issues.

The Eskay Creek Mine, a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia started operations in late 1994. For the first three years of operation, ore was crushed to minus 2 inch; blended to satisfy smelter terms and direct shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Before commencing the above operations, preliminary evaluations had indicated that an extremely complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. Subsequently markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations, at a nominal production rate of 300 tonnes per day, were commenced. Exploration diamond drilling in 1995 and 1996 discovered additional lower grade mineralized zones, which are less economic or uneconomic as direct shipping ore. Testwork demonstrated that these lower grade zones could be upgraded to marketable concentrates in a simple flotation mill. The mill was built in 1997 and has been in operation since late 1997. The mining rate now has increased to 400 tonnes per day including 250 tonnes per day of the direct shipping ore and ISO tonnes per day of the mill ore. Prime Resources Group Inc. wholly owns the Eskay Creek Mine. Homestake Canada Inc. owns 50.6% of Prime's shares and manages and operates the mine on Prime's behalf. This paper discusses the mining and milling operations as well as ore shipment and smelter contracts' administration.

The purpose of this study was to seek and evaluate possible relationships between the composition of coal refuse, as expressed by washability data, and factors affecting the product ion of a lightweight aggregate from refuse by bloating. The study was related to an intense program in the Department of Mineral Preparation at the Pennsylvania State University to study the possible elimination of air pollution from coal refuse fires by producing a low- carbon secondary refuse. Another phase of this program is considering possible uses of such a secondary refuse. Thus one study was to determine if a lightweight aggregate could be produced from this new refuse material and what effect the nature of refuse beneficiation would have upon the characteristics of a commercial aggregate product.

In German hardcoal mining approximately 1 or 2 cases of spontaneous combustion are recorded per 10 million tonnes of saleable output. In approximately every 20th spontaneous combustion case, CH, is ignited. By the example of a fire caused by spontaneous combustion on Friedrich Heinrich colliery, an overview on the measures taken for firefighting and explosion prevention is given. These measures comprise (in sequential order) - early fire detection by CO-monitoring, - gob-sealing measures against ventilation air leaks, - full-space inertization of the coalface subsequent to a CH,- deflagration, - installation of a target inertization of the caved-in gob under the protection of the full-space inertization, - re-opening of the fire zone and reestablishment of the ventilation-air current, - completion of the salvaging work with continued target inertization of the caved-in gob and further sealing measures (monolithic packing), - sealing of the coalface after salvaging. The measures described allowed gain of control of a safety- critical (because close to the face) gob fire caused by spontaneous combustion, in spite of a CH, deflagration, within few days only, and salvaging of equipment from that coalface and start-up of the follow-up coal-face on schedule. The measures taken as well as the experiences gained allow deduction of general safety criteria for fighiing of gobfires caused by spontaneous combustion, and for controlling the explosion risk. e.g. - warning and alert thresholds for early detection of fires, - criteria for spotting of the zone of fire, - rules for tightening caved-in gobs, - thresholds for the retreat of firefighting crews from the vicinity of the zone of fire, and for starting ineiization, - considerations for positioning of and strength requirements for stoppings with/without inertization, - flow-by-volume adjustment of inertization, - safety rules for work with respiratory apparatus in the inertized zone, - safety rules for the re-opening of zones of fire. The considerations end up in the conclusions that the duration in terms of months of the classic cycles of sealing, waiting, and reopening can nowadays be reduced to a few days only by purposeful combination of full-space inertization and locally confined tar- get inertization of the gob area. The earlier high risks incured by the mine resuce squads en- trusted with sealing of zones of mine fires under explosion hazards can be reduced by the method described, provided the safety regulations are conformed with. In this way, intertizing contributes substantially to reduction of down-time caused by mine fires, to preservation of recoverable parts of the deposit, and to improved safety of the fire-fighting crews.

In recent years, there has been increased interest in construction problems presented by karst topography. Twenty-five years ago, karst areas were by-passed for development. Today, the high cost of land and population pressures are requiring utilization of karst areas. Areas exhibiting karst features can be satisfactorily developed so that construction can proceed in a normal manner; or the areas may be left undeveloped and the underground drainage system abused by improper use causing or contributing to structural collapse, excessive erosion, and a grave threat to the stability of land development and the environment. The term "karst" is a comprehensive term applied to areas underlain by soluble rock that possess a topography formed chiefly by the dissolving of rock and the diversion of surface waters to underground routes. There are four features which contribute to the maximum development of karst. 1. A soluble rock, preferably limestone, must be present at or near the surface of the ground. Occasionally, dolomite will suffice.

The White Cliffs diatomite deposit occurs in a lacustrine facies of the Quiburis Formation, an Upper Miocene to Pliocene basin-fill sediment of the lower San Pedro Valley. On-going geo-logic mapping has defined an 2.5-3.0 m (8-10 ft) thick ore zone near the mill site, several marker beds, a NNW-trending high-angle normal fault, and a NW-trending syncline. The diatomite has an average loose-weight dry bulk density of 130 kg/m3 (8 lbs/ft3) and is presently marketed outside Arizona for asphalt filler. Current development is projected to yield 3500 mt (4000 st) of finished product, with an estimated 91,000 mt (100,000 st) of finished product obtain-able from several other nearby sites.

Phosphogypsum is a byproduct of the manufacture phosphoric acid. There are approximately one billion tons of phosphogypsum stored in stacks in northern and central Florida. The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) is investigating potential uses of phosphogypsum. These include using phosphogypsum as a road base material, as a soil amendment in agriculture, as a daily cover in landfills, and as a construction material. The results of this research will be presented and will be discussed in light of regulatory barriers to the use of phosphogypsum.

Breaks in coal slurry impoundments can threaten the lives and health of area residents, destroy homes and businesses and contaminate water supplies. This dangerous potential looms over coalmining regions in West Virginia and throughout Appalachia. The Coal Impoundment Project was begun in June 2003 to provide an inventory and mapping of active and abandoned impoundments in West Virginia. The project also provides the public with specific information about the impoundments in their communities. It is dedicated to alerting residents of danger and evacuation plans, reducing risk to residents and finding alternatives to impoundments. Since its first year, more than 100 impoundment sites have been added to the project’s Website.
