CANMET has developed a simple yet very effective tracer gas method to test the efficiency of stench gas emergency warning systems which can easily be performed by mine personnel. This test method uses sulphur hexafluoride (SF,) as a surrogate for such stench gases as ethyl mercaptan. The test has many advantages: it is non-disruptive to production because SF, is odourless, colourless; it is safe to use as it is inert and only a small volume, insufficient to reduce oxygen levels, is necessary to dope the air with a measurable concentration; and most importantly it provides definitive results to assess the adequacy of the warning system. Specific findings of these tests have included, over doping sections of the mine and subsequent production loss due to sickness, the warning being ignored, the injection period being too short, excessive dispersion, and inadequate notification times. The simple test protocol involves releasing a known volume of the SF, under similar circumstances to those of the stench gas, and then sampling for its presence downstream. These samples are collected in air-tight syringes which are then analyzed in a laboratory with a gas chromatograph. By direct proportion, between the size of the stench and tracer gas releases, it is possible to convert the SF, concentration into equivalent stench gas concentrations profiles. From these, it is possible to define, the initial arrival time of the gas, the time it takes to reach a "target" notification concentration, whether the gas peak will exceed TWAEV, STEV and CEV exposure limits, and the duration of the peak above these levels. Since 1993, this test protocol has been employed a total of eight times on four different Canadian mine properties and the results are being used to optimize the stench gas release system with respect to volume of gas used, duration of injection, and number of injection locations.

There is an old education maxim that a good teacher "first tells 'em what he's gonna tell 'em, then he tells 'em, and finally he tells 'em what he told 'em. I'm sure this says something about me as a teacher, and therefore as a student as well, but I'm going to begin by violating that maxim. The first thing I'm going to do is tell you what I'm not going to tell you. I'm not going to tell you that my company has found the solution to frozen coal problems. I'm not going to tell you that there is a miraculous new formula, and your frozen coal worries are over. Actually, it is really questionable whether there is a single step or process which will provide the answer. On the other hand, I do believe that at Union Electric we have made significant improvements in our ability to deal with frozen coal over the last couple of years, and I propose to describe some of the things we have done, what conclusions we have drawn so far, and the direction in which we are now headed. It would be well here to give a brief picture of the Union Electric system and the frozen coal problems we face. Union Electric is an investor owned electric utility with headquarters in St. Louis, Mo. Total generating capability is on the order of 6800 megawatts, which snakes us 24th or 25th largest in the United States. Power generation is by steam (both coal and oil fired), hydro, pumped hydro, and combustion turbine units. Although that is a diverse power supply, by far the largest source is our four coal fired steam plants. One receives coal exclusively by barge, the other three by rail. It is at these last three plants that the frozen coal difficulties arise.

The availability of concentrated brines rich iodide, bromide, chloride, sodium, magnesium and calcium ions has led to extensive chemical manufacturing operations in Michigan. The brines, ranging 1,000 to 8,000 feet below the earth's surface, are the remnants of ancient oceans which periodically covered and receded over the land area which is now Michigan. After pumping the brine to the surface, iodine and bromine are extracted via an oxidative process. Iodine and bromine find application in catalysts, disinfectants, flame retardants, oil field fluids, film, and gasoline additives. Addition of alkalinity to the brine precipitates magnesium hydroxide, used in high quality refractories needed for steel manufacture. The brines are also the country's primary source of calcium chloride, employed in ice and dust control.

When using perlite as an insulation, it is important to determine the requirements for different applications as this influences the processing of the perlite. In cryogenic applications, perlite properties of low density and fine particle size are desirable, while Loose fill insulation applications require similar properties and water repellency. However, in perlite insulating concrete applications, a coarser particle, of higher density, is required to provide improved compression strength. The essential properties of perlite including, particle size, density and surface treatment are discussed in relation to the various insulation applications. For the desulfurization of weak SO2 gas streams, Degussa developed a process using dilute H2SO4 solution containing H2O2 instead of conventional gas scrubbing with all solid absorbent medium (limestone, MgO). The process is based on fast reaction of H2O2 with SO2 yielding H2SO4 up to 70% strength, depending on off-gas tem­perature. Compared to the conventional systems with typically < 95% efficiency, independent on the raw gas SO2 concentra­tion, residual SO2 concentrations of less than 20 mg!Nm3 can be easily achieved, corresponding to nearly 100% removal. These features render the H2O2 process a very attractive, low capital cost technology to retrofit existing conventional desulfurization plants.

In a study using butyl diglyme as an organic extractant, essen­tially complete extraction of gold from chloride leach solution was achieved. The extraction kinetics are so fast that the process could be completed in 30 seconds. Except for iron, co-extraction of other ionic species was insignificant. Co-extracted iron species were successfully scrubbed from the loaded organic using 10% HCl solution. High grade, >99.9%, gold was recov­ered from the loaded organic using 5% oxalic acid solution as the stripping agent at a temperature of 70°C to 80°C. Over 99% of the organic-loaded gold was stripped from the organic phase. The butyl diglyme extractant is being tested on a variety of gold-bearing feedstocks. Presented here are results obtained from two gravity concentrates.

Maryland, will be the widest vehicular tunnel ever built by the trench tube method. Careful coordination and planning were required to meet the tight and fast design and construction schedules. During the preliminary design, traditional design drawings were bypassed in favor of 25 preliminary design reports representing major work breakdown structures (tasks). For each task, alternative design solutions were examined and analyzed by means of trade-off studies on the basis of engineering, constructibility, and economic considerations, thus providing an overall conceptual value engineering approach for the entire project. So far, total value engineering proposed by the contractor for Contract I I (largest contract of the project at $245 million) is less than 1.5 percent of the contract value. This is an important indication of the success of the design phase planning.

Computerized systems for ventilation parameters monitoring which are used in Polish coal mines provide the ventilation staff with a great number of measuring data. These data can be used to get knowledge about dynamic properties of ventilation process and disturbances affecting its state. This is necessary to create a reasonable concept of mine ventilation control system and make a practical application of such system. In the paper a method of ventilation process identification with the use of measuring data from monitoring system is described. Computer analysis of time series including statistical, correlation and frequency methods are applied to estimate dynamic properties of ventilation process and its disturbances. Using the Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) algorithm the parameters of the process have been obtained which can be efectively used in a system for mine ventilation control.

Bismuth, "the green metal," has become an important substitute for lead. The uranium industry was never really dead, anti-nuclear activists just wanted the world to think it was. And diamonds are fast becoming a miner&apos;s best friend. These commodities and others were discussed in May 1997 at the 47th Annual Minerals Processing Division meeting, held at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, CO. The meeting was put on by the SME Colorado subsection and was attended by about 115 people. In addition to the above three commodities, attendees learned more about the state of the copper industry, as well as lead and zinc and gold and silver. The program also included discussions of molybdenum, platinum and project financing. The following is a summary of some of the presentations.

The Sumich (Victorine) gold mine is located in the Toiyabe Mountain Range on the east side of Victorine Canyon, a north-trending branch off Kingston Canyon in the northwest quarter of Section 27 and southwest quarter of Section 22, T16N, R43E, in the southern end of Lander County, Nevada (Fig. 1). HISTORY Discovered in 1862, the Victorine reached a peak of development between 1872 and 1887. The "Victorine" and "Morning Star" lode mining claims, located on the outcrop of a prominent auriferous quartz vein, were patented in 1869 and 1891, respectively. 1, respectively. Gold ore was mined underground in adits driven, on the level, directly into the side of the mountain. Ore brought to the surface was trammed about 457 m (1500 ft) south on a track constructed along the contour to ore bins. From this transfer point, the ore was moved by aerial tram to the bottom of the canyon then hauled by horse-drawn wagon to the mill located about 3.2 km (2 miles) east down Kingston Canyon. Exact details of the milling process used on the Victorine are lacking, but old reports mention water-driven stamp mills, amalgamation, chlorination, and cyanidation. Gold and silver mill products are reported to have been sent to England for final refining. High-grade gold values of 103 g/t (3 oz per ton) remaining in mine walls and on outcrops, attest to the lack of success in treating the Victorine ore in the early mills. The Victorine mine may have been worked sporadically after 1887 with little success. In 1934, control of the property was acquired by William P. Moloney, an attorney from Marion, OH, who also control- 1 led an interest in the successful Goldacres mine in Lander County, NV. This property was studied, sampled, and metallurgical tests were done in 1934, but no development resulted from this work.

Is the laboratory sized coal specimen much stronger than underground coal pillars? The answer to this question has a profound implication to many coal operators. It will decide how much of the coal reserve can be recovered. Or, in many cases, it will determine whether it can be mined economically. Recent trends in several eastern states to establish regulations regarding coal pillar design to prevent surface subsidence long after mining heighten the debates. And, in some cases, these trends highlight the existing practices that seriously question the conventional wisdom. Currently, nearly all researchers and practitioners agree that as the size of rock specimens increases, its strength decreases. This concept has been universally adopted as the basic principle for coal pillar design in the United States. Several formulas have been derived to account for this effect. The reduction factor for underground coal pillars ranges from one-half to one-sixth of the strength obtained in the laboratory, depending on the formula selected. Recent case studies indicate that the reduction factor is not justifiable, at east in some cases. The use of a reduction factor is based on the assumption hat smaller rock specimens as tested in he laboratory contain none or fewer fractures or planes of weakness than larger specimens or underground coal pillars. In other words, the larger the rock materials, the more fractures it contains and subsequently weaker in strength. Do all underground coal pillars have more fractures than laboratory sized coal specimens? Not necessarily. All coal contains cleats. Some are con¬spicuous but others are not. In terms of cleat density (number of cleats per unit area), there is no difference between an underground coal pillar and a laboratory sized specimen, provided the specimen size is larger than the cleat spacing, which is mostly 25 to 75 mm (1 to 3 in.).

Airborne and ground magnetic surveys were made over and in the vicinity of the Sanford Hill ore body at Tahawus, Essex County, New York. These geophysical surveys served to: l. delineate, lithologic and structural features associated with the ore bodies; 2. indicate a major extension of the Sanford Hill ore body; and 3. guide a drilling program to prove this extension. The titaniferous magnetite ore body at Sanford Hill is associated with gabbro occurring in anorthosite. The contrast in the magnetic susceptibilities of these rock types, reflected in the magnetic measurements, allows geologic-mapping showing rock types and inferred structural features. The anomalous magnetic high of the airborne magnetometer survey indicated a southern extension of the Sanford Hill ore body. Diamond drilling, guided by the airborne and specifically the ground magnetic results, substantiated this interpreted ore extension to be of major magnitude.

In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.&apos;s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation&apos;s intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina&apos;s coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). This work focuses on the operational and safety issues associated with karst voids in large opening underground mines. Issues include water inrush, structural instability, and engineering uncertainty in these environments. Coupled with the fracturing prevalent in folded sedimentary rocks, karst voids are complex and challenging ground-control risks. Traditional methods of predicting karst void locations, such as probe drilling, are impeded by the inconsistent spatial distribution and variable sizes of the features as reported by Li et al. (J Rock Mechan Geotech Eng:232–242, 2010) and Hassan et al. (Procedia Chem 19:737–742, 2016). Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a geophysical technique that transmits radio waves into a medium and subsequently detects reflected waves via a receiver. The travel time and energy of received signals are then processed and interpreted. The difference in conductivity and dielectric permittivity between limestone and open karst cavities causes strong reflections. GPR is frequently used as a geophysical surveying technique in several industries; however, there is a lack of published research on underground mining GPR applications as reported by Zhao et al. (2015a; Geophys J Int:62–71, 2015b) and Eskelinen and Pellinen (Constr Build Mater:888–898, 2018). The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the use of GPR in an underground stone mine and to discuss the importance of karst void detection ahead of mining.

Wollastonite, named after W.H. Wollaston, an English chemist and mineralogist, is a calcium metasilicate having the chemical formula CaSiO2. Although it is a unique mineral, wollastonite has a short history of industrial use. Wollastonite is the only naturally occurring, nonmetallic, white acicular mineral. Its acicularity is the main reason for its ascendancy in the late 1970s and 1980s as a reinforcing filler and as a replacement for short-fiber asbestos and short-fiber milled fiberglass. Wollastonite is used in applications ranging from bowling balls to automobile fenders, from ceramic tile to automobile brakes, and from thermal insulation board to protective industrial coatings. The United States is the largest producer of wollastonite, with China, India, and Finland as the other three major sources. The United States, Europe, and the Far East are where most of the production is consumed. Geology Mineralogy and Physical and Chemical Properties Wollastonite, a member of the pyroxenoid mineral group, has the theoretical composition of 48.3% CaO and 51.7% SiO2. Iron, manganese, magnesium, or strontium may substitute for some of the calcium. Commonly associated minerals include garnet, diopside, calcite, quartz, epidote, apatite, and sphene. Some of the physical properties of wollastonite are listed in [Table 1]. Wollastonite is largely chemically inert; however, it can be decomposed in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Some wollastonite will fluoresce under shortwave or longwave ultraviolet light, or both, with colors ranging from pink-orange to yellow-orange and, more rarely, bluish green. In addition, wollastonite may show phos¬phorescence. Because of its unique cleavage properties wollastonite breaks down during crushing and grinding into lath-like or needle-shaped particles of varying acicularity. This particle morphology imparts high strength and is therefore of considerable importance in many of the markets for wollastonite. The acicularity of particles is defined by their length:width, or length:diameter, ratio (i.e., aspect ratio). Individual particles, even the smallest ones, commonly ex¬hibit an aspect ratio of 7:1 or 8:1 and have an average diameter of 3.5 gm. Low aspect ratio products (powder wollastonite, or milled grades) with 3:1 to 5:1 aspect ratios are used as general fillers, in ceramics, and in metallurgical fluxing. High aspect ratio products with ratios of 15:1 to 20:1 are used as functional fillers for rein¬forcing thermoplastic and thermoset polymer compounds and as a replacement for asbestos. The dry brightness and whiteness of wollastonite are also important in determining its suitability for certain filler and ceramic applications. When pure, the mineral is brilliantly white, but impurities may color it cream or gray. Brightness is determined by measuring the reflectance of finely ground powder against a stan¬dard that is assigned a brightness of 100. Magnesium oxide and barium sulfate are the two standards used. G.E. brightness, a term used in North America, refers to brightness measured with a Gen¬eral Electric reflectometer. Commercial wollastonite products usu¬ally have a G.E. brightness ranging from 85 to 95. The Hunter method is also used to measure the brightness of wollastonite. Loss on ignition (LOI), another important property in determining applications for wollastonite, is the amount of volatile matter driven off when the mineral is heated to 1 000°C. Com¬mercial wollastonite products have an ignition loss ranging from 0.5 to 2.0%. Wollastonite&apos;s naturally high pH of 9.9 (10% water slurry) is of major importance to its use in the coatings industry. Coatings formulators use milled grades as a pH stabilizer in interior and exterior PVA (polyvinyl acetate) and acrylic latex paints. There are two polymorphs of calcium silicate: wollastonite, a low-temperature form, and pseudowollastonite, a high-temperature form. Conversion of wollastonite to pseudowollastonite occurs at about 1 120°C and results in an increase in the coefficient of expansion and a color change. Pure white wollastonite may change to a cream tint or to various shades of red or brown. This color change is thought to be due to the presence of iron and/or strontium.

A review of the evolution of the North American sulfur market&apos;s structure serves to dramatize the kinds of changes that the market is undergoing at the present time. In 1970, the U.S. accounted for 23 percent of world sulfur production. This share has not declined dramatically--to 21 percent in 1993--but the U.S. developed into a substantial net importer of sulfur in the past 25 years. U.S. output was based on large deposits of native sulfur in the western part of the Gulf Coast region with production by the Frasch mining process. Producers of Frasch, or on-purpose sulfur, have historically absorbed cyclical fluctuations in sulfur demand. Two major changes in the North American market from that time to now have been the introduction of increasingly large quantities of by-product sulfur from petroleum refining and natural gas processing operations in the U.S. and Canada, and that Canadian producers have become the marginal supply source for U.S. sulfur consumers.

"INTRODUCTION The paste plant is located at the Barrick Goldstrike mine in Northern Nevada on the Carlin Trend. The Goldstrike property consists of an open pit and an underground mine; along with two processing facilities: a roaster and an autoclave. The underground portion of the mine produces approximately 1,800,000 ore tons per year and approximately 400,000 ounces. The mine is broken up into four distinct zones: Banshee, Meikle, Rodeo and Northpost. The current paste plant services both the Rodeo and Northpost zones. Development of the conceptual designs and permit approval for this plant was an extensive process that took over a decade to complete. A testing program was developed in conjunction with this process and implemented throughout to ensure the following metrics were achieved: ensure no environmental impact, material available onsite would be able to flow through the pipe to all required locations, and that this material could achieve the appropriate final strength. PLANT AND UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION This is the first paste plant to be built in Nevada. The paste plant at Goldstrike began construction in January 2012 and was completed in March of 2013. This plant was constructed to service the Rodeo side of the underground mine which previously utilized a cemented rock fill (CFR) plant to meet their backfill needs. However, in March of 2013, the same month the plant was commissioned, the raise that fed this CRF plant was mined out in a planned phase of the adjacent open pit. This made the switch to paste all the more difficult as it was being relied on for as the sole source of backfill production even though the system yet to be fully tested and optimized. The plant was designed to be fed with onsite Roaster tailing which would be thickened and then mixed with cement and fly ash. The plant was designed to pump 177 tons of paste per hour with a utilization of 65%. The original design specifications for the paste were 77% solids with varying binder contents depending on where the paste was being placed"

The fully automated chain tensioning system allows the operation of an AFC with optimum chain tension at all times regardless of actual load on the conveyor. For the heavy-load start-up, the accurate load-sharing and an efficient overload protection of modern AFC&apos;s WESTFALIA and Dodge jointly developed the integrated WB/CST drive system.

Several zinc showings, exhibiting many similarities to the well-known Balmat-Edwards zinc deposits of New York State, occur within the Grenville Supergroup strata of the Mont-Laurier Basin, Quebec. Metallogenic mapping programs have revealed much of the stratigraphic control of this mineralization. This control is observed on both regional and local scales. At the regional scale, these showings are confined to the perimeter of the Mt.-Laurier Basin, while at the local scale, a definite association between the zinc mineralization and dolomitic marble horizons is clearly exhibited from detailed mapping. These new exploration guidelines have proven to be useful for base-metal exploration in the Mt.-Laurier Basin and should be applicable to the entire Grenville Province.
