While we are all aware of the need for reclamation of mine sites, few managers and engineers seem to be aware that good reclamation begins with the earliest plans for mining and processing of ores. Far too often the attitude that reclamation is an add-on to worry about at the end of the mining process dominates the thinking of mine engineers and management, A common result is that the reclamationist can be faced with mining and waste disposal designs that are nearly impossible to deal with effectively from an ecological perspective. Everyone of us has been victimized by the down time and maintainence cost that resulted from the purchase of an outwardly attractive, but poorly designed piece of equipment. When confronted by design defects in equipment, a distraught owner can always trade it in, call a consumer advocate, or follow up one of the "lemon laws" at either the federal or state level. A poorly designed mine for reclamation purposes usually cannot be treated either with ease or cost effectiveness. Good reclamation can be effectively prevented by the designs used when the mine was planned. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the experiences our firm has had with reclamation projects at mines in the Upper Midwest as these were influenced or controlled by mine design decisions. My aim is to sensitize mine planners and managers to planning processes they should consider, and hopefully use, early in the mining process to assure successful reclamation during and after mining. Many of the examples I will cite are from experience gained at the recently closed Jackson County Iron Company taconite operation at Black River Falls, Wisconsin. I am particularly grateful to Mr. Vern Metzger, mine manager at JCIC, for his unflagging support of good reclamation practices, employee training programs (which have included reclamation techniques), and his forebearance to put up with our group of ecologists. I realize that this was a time when there were significant internal and external pressures to cut all costs including reclamation efforts. The collaboration has been successful as you will soon see.

The Carlin Trend is a 60 km (38 mi) long northwest alignment of epithermal, sediment-hosted, disseminated gold deposits. Collectively, these orebodies contained more than 620 t (20 million troy ounces) of gold. The Carlin deposit, located near the center of the Trend, has become the "type" deposit of this class. There are, however, significant differences between the individual deposits. Six subdistricts can be distinguished, based upon geographic, structural, lithologic, alteration, mineralization style, and geochemical characteristics. They are, from northwest to southeast, the Bootstrap, Bluestar-Goldstrike, Lynn, Maggie Creek, Rain and Bullion (Railroad) subdistricts. Regional Geologic Setting The Carlin District is located centrally within the Great Basin Geologic Province. Host rocks for the deposits include sedimentary units that range in age from Ordovician to Mississippian, as well as a Jurassic-Cretaceous granodiorite stock. During the Early Paleozoic, the area that is now Nevada lay along the western margin of the North American continent. A westward-thickening wedge of sedimentary units was deposited offshore in a eugeoclinal basin; these vary from continental shelf carbonates toward the east to fine-grained siliceous clastic and cherty units to the west. Tectonic activity associated with the Antler Orogeny in Late Devonian to Early Mississippian time resulted in the eugeoclinal Western Assemblage rocks being thrust as much as 140 km (90 mi) eastward over time-equivalent transitional to miogeoclinal Eastern Assemblage rocks along the Roberts Mountains Thrust fault system. The leading edge of the Roberts Mountains Thrust plate formed the emergent Antler highland from which siliceous clastic sediment, eroded from the overriding eugeoclinal rocks, was shed eastward into the adjacent foreland basin. Erosional products derived from the overthrust plate are termed the Overlap Assemblage.

Among the many compositional parameters used to judge the quality of a steam coal is the fouling factor of Attig and Duzy1 [% base in ash % acid in ash X % Na20] in ash. The higher the fouling factor, the more likely the heat transfer surfaces of the boiler will acquire a deleterious deposit of sintered ash. While examining the elemental composition of ash from various size and gravity fractions of coals from Illinois, we noticed that variations in the fouling factor were attributable mostly to variations in the sodium content. Further, sodium content was essentially the same in all sink-float fractions from a given coal. In other words, sodium was related neither to the ash nor to the organic material. We therefore concluded that the sodium was most likely in the pore water, which was approximately a constant proportion of all fractions. This led to the supposition that the sodium might be removable through water extraction. This supposition tended to confirm the observations of Daybell,2 Daybell and Gillham,3 and Gluskoter and Ruch4 that much of the sodium in coals existed as water soluble sodium ions. In passing, it should be noted that most sodium in Western U.S. coals (i.e., Wyoming, North Dakota, Montana) is not water soluble, but rather is fairly strongly held in association with the organic material (ion-exchanged).5 Because data reported in the literature were not very conclusive about the typical proportions of sodium that might be removed by water extraction, and because there were few data indicating extraction rates, and finally, because our calculations showed a favorable economic incentive to lower sodium contents, we initiated an experimental program to investigate water extraction of sodium from Illinois coals.

In the drive for faster development advance rates, railbound systems can be advantageous, in the right application. Skanska BS, the contractor to mine-owner VSK Mining, is driving an adit access deep into the Volouské Urchy Mountain in Slovakia to access the Gemerská Poloma talc deposit, some 70 km (43 miles) west of Ko?ice, the economic and cultural center of eastern Slovakia. Skanska began driving the Stolna Elisabeth drift in February 2007, extending 25 kg/m (50 lb/yd) rails (with 750 mm or 30 in. between sleepers) into the mountain to provide the main haulage to bring talc ore and waste out of the new mine once it gets into production. It will also be used for personnel transport, and is now almost complete. As a second egress and for ventilation, a 2.5-m- (8.2-ft-) diameter shaft of about 300-m (984-ft) depth will be sunk from surface down into the orebody. Stolna Elisabeth is a 4.2-km- (2.6-mile-) long drift mined at a cross section of some 11 m2 (118 sq ft). The finished profile is 3.2-m- (10.5-ft-) wide by 3.6-m- (11.8-ft-) high. It has been developed on a very slight incline so that water runs down it to the portal. The portal is 450 m (1,476 ft) above sea level and the end of the tunnel is 475 m (1,558 ft) above sea level. Much of the rock through which it has been developed is magnesite with a compressive strength of 150 MPA. The drilling jumbo is an Atlas Copco twin-boom Boomer 282 Raildrill drilling 42- to 45-mm- (1.6- to 1.7-in.-) diameter holes to a maximum length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft), depending on ground conditions. This is a drill jumbo that Skanska has used successfully on a number of projects during its life. The condition of the rock through which this drift has been driven is extremely variable. Five classifications of A1 and A2 and B1, B2 and [ ] B3, where A1 is the most competent rock and B3 is the worst, have been established. The amount of support used, of which more later is determined by the classification of ground conditions. At the time of the author?s visit, the project it was about 40 days ahead of schedule, thanks to high advance rates. For instance 6 m/day (20 ft/d) was the plan for the advance to be achieved in B1 rock, but sometimes the crews have achieved 8 m/day (26 ft/d) ? which is the average for the whole project ? in those conditions. In A1 the best advance rate achieved is 12 m/day (39 ft/d). The loading unit is a Häggloader 9HR-B on crawler tracks with a pony track to run on the rails. This allows the unit to be towed up and down the drift along the rails. To load from the face, the Häggloader lowers the foot of its onboard conveyor system to the floor and the backhoe pushes material on to it. This digging arm-conveyor combination produces uninterrupted, optimal volume loading of the haulage unit, without spill ? a technique offering load capacities as high as 180 m3/h (6,356 cu ft/hour). Foster-Miller has recently developed a new concept.for a highly specialized shaft lining system. This innovative shaft lining system uses a continuous slipforming placement technique. lining the shaft from the bottom up such as in a raised bored shaft. Although this part is not unique, the concept is designed to use polyurethane foam instead of concrete for the liner material. Furthermore, the concept is designed to attain rates of advance of 30 m/hr. The polyurethane foam liner is designed to be thinner (100 mm) than a conventional concrete liner (300 mm). It will eliminate the high cost associated with the erection and operation of an on-site concrete batch plant. The system will be designed to be operated remotely, requiring few personnel for its operation. This system (or parts of it) may be appropriate where fast construction speed is required or where a jointless liner is needed.

The effect of particle size on the flotation of coarse particles is analyzed. It is concluded that turbulence and the presence of the froth layer are detrimental to the recovery of coarse particles during conventional flotation. A counter-current column cell is proposed to avoid these two factors. In this column, a net upwards flow of water is prevalent, such that no froth is allowed to form on the top. Also, the levitation of heavy bubble-particle aggregates is helped by the ascending water current. Preliminary work at laboratory level with kilogram-size samples indicated that under similar conditions recoveries in the column were much higher than in conventional cells. Flotation results obtained with coarsely sized phosphate and quartz samples are presented. One interesting feature of this type of column is very fast flotation kinetics. Thus, a short column (only 55-cm collection zone) yielded, full recovery of floatable values.

The McLaughlin Mine is a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of Northern California, U.S.A. Homestake adopted a proactive strategy in the permitting of the Mine. Extensive environmental baseline studies were undertaken. Engineering and process alternatives were evaluated for environmental impact along with other factors. A unique pressure oxidation process was selected. Screening studies were conducted as a basis for the selection of waste rock and tailings disposal sites. Project engineering and permitting were fast tracked. Construction required eighteen months, and the first gold bar was poured in March of 1985, six years after the initial discovery. Project facilities are designed and operated so as to minimize environmental impacts. A comprehensive monitoring program demonstrates permit compliance. Reclamation of the site is ongoing throughout the Mine's twenty year life. Nonmined lands are managed to maximize wildlife habitat value.

Starting in 1980, a committee of the National Research Council studied the question of why some underground coal mines are safer than others and what could be done to improve the ones with poorer performance. The results indicated that safety is improved by management commitment to safety, by cooperation between labor and management on safety matters, and by quality training of employees and managers. Younger mines have higher accident frequencies, but are less likely to be killed or permanently disabled by a lost-time accident. Methods for improving safety performance are proposed.

Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industries. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise data from 2000-2004 show that the continuous mining machine is first among all equipment with 35% of the noise overexposures. Joy Mining Machinery, in collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is conducting research to reduce noise generated by continuous mining machines. This paper describes a ?JOY Designed for Noise Reduction? (JOY-DNR; Patent Pending) tail section as a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of continuous mining machine operators. Underground results show a 45% and 65% noise exposure reduction for the operator when compared to a standard machine. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls, will provide continuous mining machine operators an opportunity to be within the MSHA-Permissible Exposure Limit (MSHA-PEL).

The abstract discusses the importance of predicting the dewatering performance of industrial hydrocyclones from laboratory models. It highlights the challenge of scaling up design and operating parameters for efficiency estimation. The paper describes experiments with a 2-inch and 4-inch hydrocyclone using silica sand. It details the development of a model using the Nageswararao hydrocyclone model and a simulator to estimate model parameters. The model is validated with experimental data, and a new model is developed using 4-inch hydrocyclone data. The technique is then extended to predict dimensions for a full-scale dewatering cyclone operating at higher throughput and solid concentration.

"The basic objectives of mine roadways are to provide sufficient cross sections in order to meet the needs of accommodation of equipment, transport, personnel travel and ventilation. However, many roadways become damaged to the extent of needing maintenance, generally dinting, and in some cases requiring re-ripping. The damaging of a roadway is a result of several factors including geological properties of surrounding strata, method of roadway formation, support systems and so on. Among these factors, strata conditions play important effects on the stability of roadways and other mining activities. Weak rocks cause excessive roadway closures, and water softens some rocks and worsens the closure problem. In Indonesia, over 250 Mt of coal is now produced from almost surface mines. In the near future, some coal must be mined from underground. Unfortunately, the mechanical properties of coal measures rocks are not so good to open underground mines. In this paper, a scientific discussion on the effect of water on the stability of roadways is given on the basis of results obtained by means of in-situ investigation and laboratory tests both in Japan and Indonesia."

INTRODUCTION Since several years the author is engaged in research activities in the field of mining method modelling (Oberndorfer, 1993 and 1994). The initial goal was to improve and assist the selection of the most appropriate mining method. However during investigations it became obvious that the most beneficial application of computer support is the fast calculation of numerical assessment rather than the consideration of all, i.e. also qualitative, criterions necessary for final decision. Numerical results serve - together with qualitative considerations based on the experience of the mining engineer - as a basis for decision. The emphasis is on "fast" calculation, as only this property makes it possible to calculate and compare many distinct variations. As long as no procedure exists, which optimizes all involved parameters, calculating many variations is of great important, because it is the only way to increase the chance to pick a alternative "close to optimum", but also to learn about the sensitivity the result will react on changes of input parameters, which are rarely known exactly. Generally speaking many trials give a better basis for final decision. It is no secrete that the most important obstacle towards quick calculations of a series of alternatives is not the processing time of the computer, but the time required for setting the input data in way that the computer can start processing, which is usually inter- active man work on the screen. Furthermore usually several distinct programs are required to cover the whole range of involved problems, with corresponding problems in automatic data transfer. The research work's goal was to overcome these problems. The approach developed was to describe a mining method more in a theoretical way (i.e. to give the computer some degree of "consciousness" on mining methods), which then can be applied under any specific conditions. E.g. a cut-and-fill operation will be "generally" the same in narrow or thick deposit areas, but the resulting keyfigures, e.g. total tonnage, productivity, dilution and loss, or finally costs per ton, will differ significantly. The approach (MMM = mining method modelling) presented reflects a deduction from the general case to a specific one (rather than the other way round). The developed model is general enough to be applicable to any mining method, and also to any degree of precision the mining method should be described, contrary to programs designed for specific mining method layouts which can be adjusted in a more or less wide range. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT The principle correctness and feasibility of the approach was proved by a prototype program. However this program was more on a research level and far away from application for "real world" problems. The reason for this was, that it was regarded wasted time to re-invent certain tools, e.g. geometry intersection, deposit modelling or visualization. Hence it was tried to attract several software producers to invest in finalizing the model. Unfortunately this endeavor was not successful. Despite this defeat - and after some months of resignation - a final start on the project was decided. he reason for this decision was not at last the research activity in respect of low-cost underground mining methods for bulk- material as a substitute of typical quarry operations due to environmental restriction. This research work - which is in particular important for Austrian mining activities in beautiful and touristically used landscape - requires a lot of calculations in the way described. Both are still in state of progress, but - regarding mining method modelling - preliminary results can be presented. A complete re-programming of the program was required. Most obvious are the changes of programming language and operating system environment. Instead of Pascal under DOS C++ under MS-WindowsNT is now used. Several problems could be solved by this, in particular memory management, device drivers for input/output, and user friendlyness by up-to-date windows technology. However also more basic structures were changed. The idea was to utilize as many existing commercially available programs as possible to minimize programming efforts. Silicon carbide (SiC) can be produced by heating rice hulls to elevated temperature, The product is a mixture of beta crystalline silicon carbide whiskers, particles and unreacted carbon. The silicon carbide whiskers are 0.5 micron in diameter and 50 to 100 micron in length and have been found useful for reinforcing metal and other composite materials. The carbon can be removed by combustion, but this makes separation of the silicon carbide whiskers from particles difficult and a high grade whisker product cannot be made. However, a clean high grade Sic whiskers product can be obtained from the pre-burned converted rice hulls using physical separation processes that are based on differential wetting. Recovery of Sic whiskers from the pre-burned material was found to exceed 90 percent. A modification of the froth flotation process developed during this study is now being used commercially to separate silicon carbide whiskers and particles and to recover a high grade whisker product.

Henderson Mine’s primary production transitioned from the main portion of the 7700 level to the 7210 main panel in 2005. On the 7700 level, the southwest (SW) panel was brought into production in 2014 and produced through 2020. A-Panel was brought online in 2019 and took over primary production in 2020. The 7210 north panel is under development with production expected to commence in 2025. The 7700 northwest panel is expected to be the mine’s last production panel.

In response to concerns voiced by local, state, and federal agencies and various environmental groups, the Central Florida Phosphate Industry and various governmental agencies have been investigating methods to accelerate the consolidation of waste clays generated during phosphate washing and beneficiation processes. The objectives of research efforts have been to reduce the storage volumes required for clay waste, accelerate reclamation and to return the land to approximate pre-mining topography. Government and industry research to accelerate waste clay consolidation has evolved two general methods: gravity thickening and chemical flocculation. Gardinier, Inc. one of the phosphate mining companies, evaluated the use of synthetic (polyacrylamide) flocculants as an alternate waste clay thickening method in response to mining conditions encountered at their Fort Meade Mine and the proposed North Hardee County extension of the Fort Meade mine (Figure 1). After considerable research and evaluation, the Alsthom-Atlantic Clariflux Super-flocculation method was chosen by Gardinier, Inc. as a method to seriously consider for use at their Fort Meade mine.

Methods for reducing the cyclic nature of drill and blast tunneling operations have been long needed. A miniature blasting system using 10 mm (.375 in.) holes, 0.91 m (36 in.) deep, and blasting only one hole at a time makes it practical for men to work behind a shield, remaining at the face during the entire process. A prototype automated module was developed to drill, load the hole and initiate the detonation without moving from the hole. A unique cost effective gell explosive and a novel, low cost initiation method were developed.

De Beers? Finsch diamond mine began operation in the 1960s as a surface project using the latest technology available. During the 1990s, the operation, located about 160 km (100 miles) west of Kimberley, South Africa, began its move as an underground mine. The earlier stages (Blocks 1, 2 and 3) of underground work at Finsch used open stope mining methods, also using the latest in technology. The mine began developing Block 4 in 2004. How-ever, studies on this level showed that block caving was a more efficient mining method than open stoping. It was during those studies that De Beers determined that Block 4 would be a good candidate for testing Sandvik?s automated truck haulage technology.

The dissolution behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions at 75°C has been investigated. The variables investigated include concentration of lixiviants, pH of the solution and various oxidants. The anodic dissolution of gold was studied in the absence of oxidants using the potentiodynamic polarization technique. The cathodic reaction of oxidants was studied on a platinum electrode. Tafel polarization tests were also performed to determine the dissolution rate. The overall dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions was examined using a mixed potential theory. A comparative study on the role of cupric am mine, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite as oxidants for the dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions has been carried out.

River Des Peres Foul water Interceptor (Skinker–McCausland Tunnel) is a gravity sewer tunnel constructed to eliminate dry sewage overflows during high river stages and to improve the wastewater collection and treatment. The original 78-inch (2m)finished diameter Skinker-McCausland Tunnel started as a 21,500 feet (6.5km)interceptor with 13 work, drop and access shafts. The tunnel constructions included soft ground, mixed face and rock tunneling in karst formation with maximum overburden of 175 feet (53m). Due to the success of the project, the tunnel alignment was extended another13,361 feet (4.1 km) and 7 new structures by negotiating two additional segments with the contractor and the designers.

"Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen are two hydrothermally active sites located along the border of the Azorean plateau, southwest of the Azores islands where the alteration processes affecting basaltic rocks are prominent (Costa et al., 2003). Here we report on a slabby brecciated rock, abundant at both Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen, composed mainly of basaltic fragments cemented by hydrothermal precipitates from warm fluid circulation system. Research reveals that hydrothermal alteration takes place mainly by replacement processes, in which silicification is dominant (Costa et al., 1997 and Costa, 2014).Petrographic observations, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microprobe analysis, and mass balance studies made on basaltic fragments within the breccia show that silicification is one of the main processes resulting from hydrothermal fluid circulation. This alteration process leads to complete replacement by silica, in extreme cases, forming an impermeable cap that may contribute to the formation of sub-seafloor sulphide deposits, including examples in the geological past."
