It has been known for a long time that summing pressure drops and rises due to friction, shock, fans and natural ventilation is incorrect. In fact, lost works and works should be summed. In spite of this, the traditional method of finding a fan/system operating position has been the H/Q Curve. This paper presents (lost) work/m curves, progressing from a single fan moved around the system to include natural ventilation work, and fans in a series, parallel and series/parallel. The solutions obtained graphically are substantiated by dry air thermodynamic solutions, and the traditional solutions are shown to be in error. This method of solving problems is particularly useful when moving fans around the system, and essential in series/parallel and series situations with substantially different fan densities. The dry air analysis is employed because of its simplicity. Real air, with evaporation and condensation, will react somewhat differently, and one should use real densities (i.e.[l + w +w]/va ) when using this method. One source of error when applying this method to real air, although probably not major, will be investigated in a subsequent paper. Friction and shock losses are proportional to the square of the mass rate of flow, leading to the typical parabolic system curve. However, the unbalanced water stuff potential energy term, on a unit mass basis, is substantially independent of the mass rate of flow. It is possible that this could be handled as a negative natural ventilation work.

Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name II Sp 1 it Sets'" have been under research and development by the author and the Ingersoll-Rand Company since February of 1973. The United States Bureau of Mines and the Mines Enforcement and Safety Administration as well as many mining companies have cooperated in field testing the device. Split Set rock anchors are distinctively different from the widely used mechanical rock anchors or fully grouted rock anchors. They control ground movement internally in a manner that allows controlled deformation during the early phase of the ground reaction curve but then, as secondary creep develops, anchorage per unit length increases and they serve to strengthen and stabilize the opening for long periods of time. The history of research and development of the Scott Split Set rock anchor system with accompanying laboratory and field test data is presented in this paper.

or more than 50 years the Portland Cement Association has represented the United States cement industry in matters relating to the technology and use of cement and concrete. Interestingly enough, PCA?s emphasis has been on concrete and its uses rather than on Portland cement. The cement industry realized long ago that cement is basic and serves its fundamental purpose as an ingredient in concrete. Cement could never be successful if concrete were not. Work with the users and specifiers of concrete had to be done at its end point of application--in a building, bridge, dam, highway or home. PCA, over its half century of existence, has been dedicated to this job. I should like to talk to you today on the less technical side of concrete--what it has been--what it is today--and what it can offer in future construction. Concrete, in many forms, has a long background extending from such notable historic times as the Roman Empire. Here, concrete made from pozzolanic cement from the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius was used to construct the Coliseum, home of the Roman circus; for the Appian Way, the ancient forerunner of the Interstate system; and the miles of aqueducts throughout Europe, many of which still carry water. Dense-medium circuits have been installed in many mineral treatment plants since its, original development about thirty years ago. In the intervening, period the process has been thoroughly evaluated and many innovations have been introduced. The Heavy Density. Cyclone is one of the newer systems which has extended the operating range of this process to 65 mesh size. Several different finely divided materials have been used to produce the separating bath but nearly all new plants use a ferro-magnetic medium. The, advantages of magnetic medium include: 1. Smaller recovery plant 2. Lower cost recovery plant both in initial and operating cost 3. Excellent medium stability 4. Dependable medium supply at reasonable and stable cost. Magnetic separators are used to recover this magnetic medium and the smaller plants and lower operating costs are directly related to their use.

Tunnel damage from explosion and earthquake excitation is correlated with strain and particle motions. Critical strains and motions are then correlated with focal distance, which is so small that permanent strains are highly likely. The shaking process is then numerically modeled to investigate the effects of excitation frequency and joint orientation. The models confirm that near cavern blocks slide intermittently only at relatively high particle velocities during periods of low joint normal stress. Larger displacements occur with relatively small shear wave lengths or relatively high frequencies. Variation in joint orientation and rock mass dilation result in changes in displacement.

Porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern Pacific area represent relative newcomers to the growing number of occurrences of this mineral deposit type. In addition to firmly establishing the importance of this region and its potential influence within the framework of world copper resources, the deposits of this region are significant from a scientific point of view because of their close relationship to the phenomena of Island Arc evolution. Since the discovery of Panguna on Bougainville in 1964, the list of prospects, proven and unproven, and developments, has grown to more than twenty and the number continues to increase. At the time of this writing, the number of prospects is imperfectly known but the following localities and numbers are fair minimum approximations: Manus (Admiralty Islands) (3); New Britain (5); New Ireland (1); Guadalcanal (2); New Guinea Highlands (6); Misima (1); and Fiji (2); Proven prospects are present in the new Guinea Highlands (2); one deposit is being developed in Test Irian, and one orebody, on Bougainville, is in production. This summary paper concerns a discussion of some of the geological characteristics of producers, developments, and prospects on the Islands of Nets Guinea, New Britain, Bougainville, Guadalcanal, and Manus. I am not aware of publishable data for Misima or Fiji. As so many variables ultimately determine whether or not a porphyry copper occurrence becomes an orebody, not the least of which is geography, this summary treats the characteristics of these occurrences which alloy; their assignment to the porphyry copper category. For purposes of this discussion, I have considered those copper occurrences which are apparently genetically related to talc-alkaline intrusions and in which the content of copper has been upgraded 50 to 100 times the Clarke for that particular host rock. Some of these occurrences are shown on Figure 1.

Probability function integration method is one of the influence function method. It is a widely accepted method in many mining districts in China and Poland mainly because its theory and formulae can well-represent the surface subsidence basins due to longwall mining of flat or near-flat seams. This paper introduces the basic theory of the probability function integration method and determines its 4 basic parameters by analyzing the measured subsidence profiles in eight longwall panels in Northern Appalachian Coal field. It also discusses the two methods for determining the 4 parameters. Finally the acquired parameters are used to predict the subsidence and deformation of the houses for damage assessment. Comparisons are made between the measured and the predicted subsidence. Probability Function Integration Method The probability function integration method for predicting surface movements and deformations is widely used in China and Poland. The governing equation of the method contains five parameters: subsidence factor, a, offset of inflection point, d, tangent of the major influence angle, tan fl, horizontal movement constant, b, and major dispersion angle e (e = 90. for flat seams). Its applicable range iis much larger including seams less than 30' from the horizontal, critical and noncritical mining and soft to hard overburden.

Up to 3 million tons of automotive shredder residue (ASR) is generated annually in United States. Plastics are the most valuable component of the ASR material making up approximately 25% of the total weight. In order to reuse these plastics, a selective process is required to separate each plastic, with very high purity and favorable economics. One separation technique, which may be able to selectively recover the plastics from ASR, is flotation. The preliminary flotation results have demonstrated that acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) can be selectively separated from the model ASR feed, the PC/ABS/PA 66 system, by appropriate control of the surface chemistry.

GEOLOGY One of the largest copper resources in North America occurs in the Bingham mining district, located 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Salt Lake City, UT. Anaconda's present contribution to the development of this resource is the Carr Fork mine. (Fig. 1, Bingham district plan map.) The Carr Fork story began about 300 million years ago when a thick sequence of sedimentary quartzite and limestone was deposited in the Oquirrh Basin. Subsequent earth stresses formed a series of west-northwest-trending overturned anticlines and synclines that were later offset by northwest-striking thrust faults and northeast-trending normal faults. (Fig. 2, Bingham district cross section.) About 38 million years ago the Bingham stock was intruded into some of the folds, resulting in the formation of porphyry ore in the intrusive, and fissure, replacement, and skarn ore deposits in the sediments. The Carr Fork skarns were formed preferentially in two limestone units, called the Yampa and Highland Boy, which average about 46 m (150 ft) in thickness, separated by about 76 m (250 ft) of quartzite. Copper mineralization consists almost entirely of chalcopyrite associated with pyrite and molybdenite in a gangue of garnet, diopside, magnetite, quartz, and carbonate. Molybdenum, gold, and silver are economic byproducts. (Figs. 3 and 4, indicated ore in plan and section.) EXPLORATION HISTORY The West Mountain mining district, of which Carr Fork is a part, was organized in 1863, after leaf-silver ore was discovered in the Carr Fork of Bingham Canyon. However, it was not until 1873, when the Bingham and Camp Floyd railroad to the town of Bingham was completed, that the mining camp flourished. Many small mining companies in the district were reduced, often through consolidation. By 1937 only the National Tunnel and Mines Co. was active in the Carr Fork area. In 1948 it declared bankruptcy, and was later purchased by The Anaconda Co. Anaconda conducted geologic investigations in the Bingham district until 1968, when a concerted diamond drilling program was initiated to fully evaluate the geologic potential of the Carr Fork area. The exploration program commenced with one diamond drill, but was enlarged to three drills following discovery of the first major ore intercept. Near completion of the exploration effort, large oil well rotary drills were used to drill to depths of 762 to 914 m (2500 to 3000 ft), after which the holes were completed by standard diamond drilling techniques. All holes were collared vertically, but considerable deviation occurred because of structure and rock conditions. A.B. Rushton The work and resulting publications of the Committee on Underground Coal Mine Safety and The President's Commission on Coal were appropriate at the time of publication. The statistics cited in the publications appeared to be valid, and the actions proposed by the committee had merit. Although the actions proposed to achieve further improvements in safety may have been worthy of repeating, to associate statistics (Table 1) that are seven to eight years old with company names is bad. Statistics are readily available from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and are usually within three months of being up to date. A review of the most recent Coal Controlling Co. Report will reveal significant changes in the rankings. The more recent statistics should have been cited, or at least compared with those used in the article. Westmoreland Coal Co. is listed as having a 21.1 disabling injury rate for the period (1/78-12/80). The disabling injury rate for the Company for the year ending 1985 was 7.4 for the underground mines and 6.25 for the total facilities. Through March 1986, the disabling rate for the underground mines was 2.86. The management and employees of Westmoreland Coal Co. are committed to safety. The improvements achieved over the past five years attest to that commitment. We are justifiably proud of the achievement and dislike being misrepresented as in the April 1986 article. Reply by E.M. Spokes I regret that the lapse of time since the original work gives a picture of safety practice that is no longer true today. That Westmoreland has reduced its disabling injury rate by 65% to 7.4 in 1985 is most commendable, and I congratulate you for this accomplishment. It is typical of the progress sought by the National Academy of Science and National Research Council when they funded the original study and published "Toward Safer Underground Coal Mines" in 1982. If a significant number of companies do as well as Westmoreland, the report will have served its purpose. Since the paper was primarily a condensation of the original report, it would not have been appropriate to seek access to later statistics. The purpose in seeking its publication at the time of presentation was to reach those who might have missed the original report. The fact that publication was delayed has not voided that purpose and may have reminded some who were aware of the original that its recommendations still apply to improvement of underground coal mine safety.

The term clay is somewhat ambiguous unless specifically defined, because it is used in three ways: 1) as a diverse group of fine-grained minerals, 2) as a rock term, and 3) as a particle size term. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define because of the wide variety of materials that comprise it; therefore, the definition must be general. Clay is a natural, earthy, fine grained material comprised largely of a group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. These minerals are hydrous silicates comprised mainly of silica, alumina, and water. Several of these minerals also contain appreciable quantities of iron, alkalies, and alkaline earths. Many definitions state that a clay is plastic when wet. Most clay materials do have this property, but some clays are not plastic, e.g., halloysite and flint clay. As a particle size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum size particles in the clay size grade are defined differently on various grade scales. Soil investigators and mineralogists generally use 2 pm. as the maximum size, whereas the widely used scale by Wentworth (1922) defines clay as material finer than approximately 4 pm. Some authorities find it convenient to use the term clay for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material (Grim, 1968). When used this way, the term includes clay, shale, or argillite, and some argillaceous soils. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, the term is generally understood by those who use it. Clay is an abundant natural raw material, and it has an amazing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. Clays rank among the leading industrial minerals in both tonnages produced and total value. Their importance is indicated in Table 1, which lists the 1988, 1989, and 1990 productions according to the US Bureau of Mines (Ampian, 1992). As industrial minerals, clays are a complex group that consists of several mineral commodities, each having somewhat different mineralogy, geologic occurrence, technology, and uses. In this section these commodities are organized as follows: 1) bentonite, 2) common clay, 3) hormites, and 4) kaolin. Fuller's earth is discussed in both the bentonite and hormite chapters. Fuller's earth is a term based on use, and both bentonites and hormites are sold as fuller's earth. The overlapping is particularly evident where both bentonite and non-bentonite fuller's earth are used for the same purposes or products, such as in drilling mud, bleaching or clarifying fats and oils, and carriers for insecticides and fertilizers. Kaolin, ball clay, halloysite, and refractory clays are grouped together because they consist mainly of minerals of the kaolin group. High horizontal stress has been identified as a critical factor affecting roof stability in underground mines, particularly when the immediate roof consists of weak or laminated rock. Numerical models were employed to better understand the influence of caprock thickness, cutting sequences, and the orientation of driving direction relative to maximum horizontal stress on roof stability in underground stone mines. These models were calibrated based on field observations of roof falls from the study mine. The findings of this study enhance our understanding of roof stability under high horizontal stress and contribute to reducing the risk of roof falls in underground stone mines.

This paper presents a review of several models of roadheaders being used in today?s tunnel projects. The features of different models of roadheaders are presented and compared. Roadheader size and cutter power generally determine which roadheader is best for a particular job. We will also present a model for matching features of the roadheader to the anticipated ground conditions such that the most efficient machine is selected for the project.

Introduction An integrated oil company has two options in approaching strategic planning. It has to decide whether it is in business for the long-term. I state this in all seriousness. Those who help manage public companies have the responsibility of good stewardship of other people's money. We must decide whether continued investment in our basic business will generate a reasonable rate of return. With a world surplus of petroleum production capacity, and continuing downward pressure on prices, this question should be addressed by all oil companies. And a positive answer is not necessarily a foregone conclusion in all cases. The decision should be made based on proven competence in finding and developing petroleum reserves on a cost-competitive basis with other producers, and on a frank analysis of future prospects. This should include a realistic assessment of the projected rate of return on specific investment projects. If a company did not pass these tests, its strategy could take one of four paths. Diversification First, it could diversify. But recent history suggests that oil companies are not good at managing other businesses. Second, it could seek a buyer for its business at the optimum return for its owners. Third, it could sell its assets on a piecemeal basis. And, fourth, it could adopt a longer-range plan of self-liquidation by living off current recoverable reserves. In other words, by not investing in exploration and development, it could maximize short-term profit and pass the money back to shareholders in the form of dividends. The Conoco component of DuPont has a below-average cost of finding petroleum, a good track record of efficient production, and a full plate of projects that pass the test of return-on-investment. In short, Conoco is in business for the long-term. That fact, in itself, determines at least one key element in strategy. This is to extend the life of the petroleum reserve base while at the same time maintaining maximum efficient rates of production to provide a strong cash flow. A company that is able to maintain a strong reserve base will ultimately see the value of those reserves escalate as world oil supplies tighten. Our planners expect this tightening to occur within the next decade as demand grows and production in non-OPEC areas of the world begins to decline. An exploration program tailored to meet the requirements of reserve replacement and current production should have two basic parts. All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine. Although salmonid fishes (including Pacific salmon and trout) have only intermediate sensitivity to copper (Cu) for traditional toxicity endpoints (survival, growth, and reproduction) and thus do not ?drive? the freshwater Cu criteria (e.g., see species-sensitivity ranking in US EPA 2007), Cu concentrations as low as 1 to 2 µg/L have been reported to impair olfaction (the sense of smell) in salmonids in laboratory experiments using dilute fresh water (see references in Meyer and Adams 2010 and DeForest et al. 2011). Olfaction is crucial to predator avoidance, recognition of kin, and reproductive synchronization (Baldwin et al. 2003); and Cu is of general ecotoxicological concern because it can be present in acid/mine rock drainage, industrial and municipal effluents, agricultural runoff, and urban stormwater runoff (Meyer et al. 2007). Therefore, there is public concern that the current regulation of Cu in surface waters is not stringent enough to protect salmonid fishes against olfactory impairment (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). Because the toxicity of metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry [e.g., acute toxicity of Cu generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ + Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase; Meyer et al. 2007], hardness-based freshwater criteria for metals are lower at lower water hardness. The recently-developed biotic ligand model (BLM) explicitly takes into account all four of those water chemistry parameters and the concentrations of other major inorganic cations (Na+, K+) and anions (Cl-, SO42-) to predict the acute toxicity of cationic metals (e.g., Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) to aquatic organisms; and the BLM has been adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to calculate acute and chronic national freshwater criteria for Cu (US EPA 2007). Consistent with observations of Cu toxicity to aquatic organisms, BLM-based Cu criteria generally are lower at lower pH, water hardness, alkalinity, and DOC concentrations. Therefore, although threshold concentrations for olfactory impairment by Cu can be low in dilute fresh waters, the corresponding hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria for the same waters also tend to be low. This leads to a logical question: Are Cu criteria already protective against impairment of olfaction in salmonid fishes, thus obviating the need to decrease those criteria even lower to protect against adverse effects to this physiological/ecotoxicological endpoint? Herein, we demonstrate that in all studies conducted to date, the US EPA?s BLM-based freshwater Cu criteria would have been protective against olfactory impairment in salmonid fishes, but the US EPA?s hardness-based criteria would not always have been protective. This distinction is important because all 50 States in the USA still use hardness-based Cu criteria in their water quality standards, and only some of the States allow use of the BLM to calculate site-specific Cu criteria. Additionally, in the absence of empirical results for calibration of a saltwater Cu-olfactory model, we demonstrate that a proposed unified freshwater-saltwater Cu-olfactory BLM predicts the US EPA?s current saltwater Cu criteria would be protective against olfactory impairment caused by Cu in sea water.

Faced with decreasing production from the gold heap leach operation, Robinson implemented a drilling and blasting program on the leach pads in 1993. This program offset some of the negative effects of low ore permeability and short circuiting of leach solution that resulted in lower than optimum recoveries. The drilling and blasting program created new solution flow paths and increased gold recovery. Production and pulp assays at depth intervals, prior to and following drilling and blasting, reveal the degree of short circuiting and benefits of the program.

Interstate 70 running into the mountains west of Denver, CO is the main access to the state?s numerous ski areas and other tourist attractions. As such, the highway is a vital part of Colorado?s economy. Due to the mountainous terrain in which it winds, I-70 is limited to two lanes in either direction. And, during the past few decades, the volume of traffic has increased to the point where motorists encounter major delays, particularly on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings heading west from Denver, and then again on Sunday evenings heading east. In the past, those delays occurred mostly during the ski season. However, many of the mountain towns have been successful in turning their resorts into year-round vacation destinations. A good move economically, but the pressure added to I-70 has caused even greater traffic delays, sometimes to the point where some Front Range residents avoid trips to the mountains.

Jetti Resources has developed a catalyst which overcomes the passivation of primary sulfides, enhancing the heap leach recovery of copper from chalcopyrite. It is important to emphasize that heap leaching of copper sulfides, whether with or without the Jetti catalyst, is a biooxidative process. We have demonstrated the efficacy of Jetti’s technology in bioreactors, with a chalcopyrite-dominant porphyry ore. In the presence of Jetti’s technology, optimal bioleaching conditions significantly increase copper extraction by 2.6 times that of the baseline.

The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounces per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m elevation (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required a three lift hoisting system for men, materials and ore. In addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity, temperature, ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operation. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation. The results of the studies indicated that a new deep shaft with a potential to hoist from 2,135 m (7,000 feet) or below was the most attractive option. Detailed design of the shaft and associated surface plant commenced in January, 1982 and the following milestone dates were achieved: 1980 - initial study of hoisting and haulage facilities; January, 1981 - ore reserves in excess of 1 million tonnes of ore at 18.7 g/tonne (0.45 oz/ton) confirmed; March, 1982 - preliminary study of Macassa No. 3 Shaft completed; April, 1982 - permanent hoisting plant purchased; June, 1982 - site clearing commenced; September, 1982 - shaft collared; May 1, 1983 - shaft sinking commenced; February 11, 1985 - shaft reached 1,600 m (1mile); December 1, 1985 - shaft scheduled for completion.
