Introduction The science of geometallurgy requires that ore characterization be performed holistically, that is, with consideration of ore quality on plant performance and product quality. Geometallurgy, by definition, requires knowledge of geology, mineralogy, extractive metallurgy and pyrometallurgy. Examples of the ore characterization challenges for the geometallurgist in the production of iron ore pellets from low-grade Proterozoic iron formation are presented here. Ore Characterization Ore characterization, the quantifying of mineralogy, grain size and the texture of ores, is an often overlooked tool in improving process efficiency. Some mineral related problems are not unique to the production of iron ore pellets; e.g. the problems caused by expanding clays in flotation. The negative impact of carbonate minerals in the ore on pellet productivity and pellet quality are unique. The long and complex geologic history of Precambrian iron formations contribute to modifications of grain size and the introduction of complex textures.

The plate tectonic setting, regional geology, and certain aspects of the economic geology of the iron-rare-earth-nio-bium ore bodies at Bayan Obo, Inner Mongolia, China, were studied by a team of geologists from the Tianjin Geologic Research Academy and the U.s. Geological Survey between 1987 and 1989. These ore bodies were formed by hydrothermal replacement of Middle Proterozoic dolomite in an intracontinental rift setting. A variety of veins and/or dikes that have a carbonatite-like mineralogy cut the footwall clastic rocks and migmatites. A stockwork of veins occurs at several locations in the footwall. The hanging wall is a shale that has been converted to a K-metasomatite and has microcrystalline potassium feldspar as its principal constituent. This shale served as a sealing caprock that contained the chemical solutions that reacted with the dolomite and that created the enormous concentration of mineralized rock in an 18-kilometer-long syncline. The rocks that host these ore bodies and the associated mineralized areas occur today as roof pendants in granitoid rocks of Pennian age that were emplaced during a continent-to-continent collision during that period.

"Location. The iron formation of the Gogebic district (including the Penokee) comprises a narrow belt south of the western part of Lake Superior extending from Michigan for a considerable distance into Wisconsin. From the mouth of the Montreal River (about twenty-five miles west of Ashland) the iron formation is only about twelve miles distant, but it is about twenty miles south of Ashland. Beginning on the east at a point about eight miles east of Wakefield, Mich., it extends through Sunday Lake, Bessemer and Ironwood in Michigan, and thence south of west through Hurley, Wis., and only a short distance south of Mellen, Wis. About eight miles westward from Mellen, the formation disappears, but six miles further west it is known to reappear and continue thence for about eight miles. The total length of the range is about sixty miles, two-thirds of this distance being in the State of Wisconsin; but nearly all of the ore has been obtained from the eastern third of the district, which is in the State of Michigan.History. This iron range was first noted in 1848 by Dr. Randall, assistant geologist to Dr. David Dale Owen, while following the fourth principal meridian northward. It was also reported by Charles Whittlesey in an account of a survey made in 1849, and published by Owen in 1852. Analyses of the iron ore are given with the following account. ""The bed of magnetic iron ore south of Lac des Anglais is of extraordinary thickness,25 to 60 feet. * * In the wild and deep ravines where the Bad River breaks through the range, there is a cliff of slaty ore * * * probably three hundred feet thick. * * * I estimate more than one-half of this face to be ore, and in places the beds are from ten to twelve feet in thickness, with very little inter-mixture of quartz * * * . The position of the best exposures of ore which I saw is such as to require from eighteen to twenty eight miles of transportation to reach the lake."""

With mine activity dating back to 1792, the Lehigh Valley, about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the historic Allentown/Bethlehem steel mills and about 160 km (100 miles) northeast of Philadelphia, PA, defined early-day coal mining. Coal mining began just nine years after the end of America?s Revolutionary War. The high-carbon, clean-burning anthracite coal that was hand-dug from the Pennsylvania hills fueled the steam engines that powered the Industrial Revolution, helping build early steam ships and even the first automobiles. Around 1910, at the peak of the U.S.?s early mining effort, there were more than 250,000 men working underground ? 10,000 of them in the Lehigh Valley.

Natural Zeolites are a less expensive and in certain applications a superior alternative to organic ion exchange resins. Mining and metallurgical waste streams are difficult to treat because the effluents which contain potentially valuable heavy metals such as copper, lead, and silver are often highly acidic and contain significant quantities of suspended solids. Under rigorous operational conditions, certain natural zeolites can remove the metals, which if desired can be recovered by either elution or conventional smelting techniques. There are significant differences in cation exchange rate, selectivity and capacity as well as resistance to either high or low pH, blocking cations and tolerance to elevated or depressed temperature and pressure not only between different zeolite minerals but between the same mineral from different deposits. Applying natural zeolites to the treatment of mining and metallurgical waste streams depends on matching the specific zeolite to the effluent by characterization of the zeolite minerals.

There exists a wide array of industrial by-products that can be shown to produce beneficial responses in the soil/plant environment. These materials range from clean coal technology residues produced in the generation of electric power, particularly those high in gypsum, to mineral 'fines' produced by the aggregates and crushed stone industries. A number of these materials will be examined in relation to potential nutritional interactions in soils and crops with emphasis on trace elements. The significance of utilizing these materials in agriculture as a component of sustainable agricultural systems will be discussed.

This fall, the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) will begin a new chapter by welcoming its new executive director and chief executive officer (CEO). Melissa Russell, a successful nonprofit executive with more than 30 years of experience in global association management, officially stepped into the role on Sept. 29, 2025. Dr. Roussey Roussev The use of chemical additives on grinding is of significant importance considering the high energy consumption of grinding processes. My research indicates that the dispersant approach explains the effects, in this particular case of wet grinding. Further, the dispersant approach combined with torque measurements give the possibility of clarifying the mechanisms involved when using grinding aids. I find the conclusions derived from the data obtained to be correct and useful for grinding. In general, I agree with the explanations. However, I would like to discuss several additional points that I consider to be important, and in the same time to mention some of my own results from investigations similar to those presented in the study under discussion. The "bed volume concept" and the change of slurry viscosity explain adequately the data plotted on fig. 3, in conjunction with Figs. 1 and 2. However, the significant increase of the average torque in the case of 83% solid with XFS-4272 introduces the necessity of establishing the optimum of percent solid when dispersant is used. For example, the optimum percent of solid for different materials varies. One of the reasons is the material's mass density. On the other hand, it is necessary to determine the concentration of the chemical used. Because of this, it would be interesting to know how the cited concentration was selected. The supportive discussion and verification by Dr. Roussev, with results similar to that of the paper, is appreciated. I will try to answer the additional questions he has raised. To begin with, the mill was fitted with six lifters of approximately one-quarter inch height. There has been extensive lab and plant level work to understand downstream influences of using dispersants like XFS-4272*. In sulfide ore processing, which is the area in which most industrial scale testing has been performed with this approach, neutral to positive influences have been observed. For example, positive effects (e.g., increased recovery) have been noticed in flotation operations involving ores that have a tendency to produce excessive slimes upon grinding. (1) Also, the use of a dispersant has been shown to demonstrate a positive influence on classification by improving the sharpness of separation and preventing a decrease in d50 value that usually accompanies increasing flow rates to classifiers.(2) The biggest potential downstream problem is in thickening, which at the dosages involved, has not been a problem in plant scale usage. The commercial price of dispersants like XFS-4272 is quite variable depending on source, concentration, etc, but a typical cost of XFS-4272 to achieve a 10% increase in throughput in industrial mills has been between 20 and 35- US per ton of feed ore (1981).

Introduction The efficient process control of a uranium mill and its associated mining operation requires a nearly continuous knowledge of the uranium concentration in the ore. Generally, the approach is to use laboratory assays of grab samples from the mill feed belt. In some cases, elaborate and expensive systems have been used to ensure random sampling, but even with these systems, mass-balance discrepancies still exist. There is a requirement for an on-line instrument that can give a prompt, accurate analysis of a large portion of the feed stock. The authors have recently evaluated a laboratory system that achieves these goals using neutron activation and delayed neutron counting. The development of the on-line uranium ore analyzer is a consequence of previous work done at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment (WNRE) (Campbell et al., 1978 and 1981), and is based on the emission of delayed neutrons after the neutron irradiation of fissionable materials. The mechanism of delayed neutron emission has been described (Keepin, 1965), but briefly is as follows. The fission fragments resulting from irradiation are in an excited state. Certain of these delayed fission products, precursors, decay to a more stable state by the emission of a delayed neutron. The delayed neutrons can be divided into six groups with effective half-lives ranging from 0.2-55 sec. It is important to note that more than 50% of the delayed neutrons are emitted within the first 6 sec after irradiation; this has an influence on the design of the analysis instrument. Measurement Cycle The measurement cycle involves a neutron irradiation, a delay time, and a counting period. The laboratory demonstration model of the ore analyzer comprises a californium-252 neutron source, a source chamber, a pneumatic transfer facility, and a neutron irradiation and counting module (Fig. 1). The ore sample is placed in the irradiation chamber. The neutron source is transferred to the center of the chamber for a 5-sec irradiation while the helium-3 thermal neutron detectors are switched off. As the source returns to the storage chamber, the detectors are switched on and the delayed neutrons counted. The total assay cycle is 16 sec. The current instrument design calls for the ore to be cut from the main belt every 16 sec by a mechanical arm and dropped into the analyzer directly, or via another belt. The cycle starts when there is a sufficient mass of ore in the irradiation chamber to depress a switch and stops when the delayed neutron count is finished. The ore is then dropped through the bottom of the analyzer chamber and returned to the main belt. The counts from each cycle are accumulated and the data reduced to give the desired information. The source is contained in an iron capsule and pneumatically transferred between the irradiation/counting and storage chambers. The irradiation/counting chamber possesses 12, 600-mm (24-in.) long helium-3 thermal neutron detectors embedded in an annulus of wax (Fig. 1). Two sets of six detectors are each interfaced to a preamplifier, amplifier and single-channel pulseheight analyzer system, and the two systems are connected to a scaler. A special timing unit controls the transfer of the source and the on and off switching of the detector assembly, in sequence with the movement of the source. Results and Discussion In the experimental demonstration, using the 107 neutron.s-1 source, a 10% uranium ore was measured to ± 10% (2o total error) in 10 cycles and ±6% (2o) in 100 cycles. Since a larger source was not available, it can be statistically predicted that a 109 neutron-s-1 source could be used to measure a 0.1% ore to ± 10% (20) in 10 cycles. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) have gained worldwide acceptance in the construction field and are being employed in ever increasing numbers to drive underground transit lines, drainage systems, etc. However, TBM utilization in the mining industry, and more specifically coal mining, has been very limited. This paper reviews past and present applications of TBMs to coal mining and examines the needs of the industry in an attempt to offer some insight as to what a TBM system must provide if the excavation potential demonstrated in civil works projects is to be realized in coal operations. EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE Germany The Germans recognized long ago the potential of mechanized drivage for coal mine entry development. Early in the 1960's experimental runs were made with a full-face Wohlmyer roadheader at the Westerholt Mine and trials were conducted on a roller bit armed full-face Bade roadheader. But because of problems with penetrating the various carboniferous strata occurring in changing sequence and hardness, these first attempts were soon terminated. After viewing later successes in the construction industry with improved TBMs, new attempts were initiated by the German mining industry in 1971 to mechanize drivage of their development entries. Four TBMs of two different types were placed in operation.

The adsorption process, density and structural property of the oleate layer adsorbed onto a hydroxyapatite (HAP) surface at six different concentrations and three pHs (pH 8, 9 and 10) have been studied using the technique of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The present study demonstrated the versatility and accuracy of the QCM-D for surface adsorption characterization. The real-time measurements of frequency and dissipation shifts with a hydroxyapatite-coated sensor revealed changes in the hydroxyapatite surface during the entire adsorption process. Chemisorption and surface precipitation of sodium oleate were also observed on the surface of hydroxyapatite through the use of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). Chemisorption dominated at low concentrations and high pH values and formed a rigid and thin adsorption layer. Surface precipitation of calcium oleate and micelles dominated at concentrations higher than critical micelle concentration (CMC) and lower pHs and formed a thick but dissipated adsorption layer with a high hydration level. Three distinct adsorption behaviors were identified from the different slopes of ?D-?f plots. The adsorption density was less than a monolayer at concentrations <0.164 mM, but increased significantly at concentrations higher than 0.821 mM at all three pHs. The critical concentration at pH 8 was 0.33 mM, which was lower than at pH 9 (0.821 mM) and pH 10 (3.3 mM).

A surprisingly large mining-induced seismic event occurred in the LKAB Kiirunavaara Mine (Sweden) on 18 May, 2020 at 03:11 (local time). The estimated moment magnitude was 4.2. The event caused extensive damage in a large section of the mine. The production in the area is not yet resumed, even by the beginning of 2022 (~20 months after the event). The Kiirunavaara Mine has one of the world’s largest underground seismic systems with approximately 253 geophones. The in-mine records of the event showed a very complex character with a several sub-events. The event was also well recorded by seismic stations out to over 9,000 km distance. Data from the underground and regional seismic systems were analysed to define and compare basic source parameters such as hypocenter location, seismic moment, as well as the seismic moment tensor. The data from the in-mine seismic system was used to study the development of the seismic process and to define elementary seismic sub-sources together with the official hypocenter location.

An earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) and pipe jacking were used to construct a 430-meter-long segment of sanitary sewer force main. The force main was constructed by first jacking a 2045-mm-outside-diameter, reinforced concrete cylinder pipe (RCCP) casing through alluvial sands and gravels. Later, a 1220-mm-diameter, ductile iron carrier pipe was installed within the casing pipe. The main concern affecting the construction method selection was the elimination of the need for dewatering, which could cause groundwater flow from deeper, contaminated sands up across a silt aquitard into cleaner, shallower sands. In addition, the method selected reduced the volume of soil to be handled and, consequentially, the potential amount of contaminated soil to be managed. Items discussed in the paper include provisions for handling boulders and controlling ground movements as excavation and jacking occurred approximately 300 mm beneath an active,4800 kPa, 254-mm-diameter natural gas transmission pipeline.

The countries of Southeast Europe are rich in aggregates, but neither management nor supply are coordinated within or across this area. There are open issues in SEE on the local scale as well as on regional/national and transnational scales that will need to be addressed in order to meet societal expectations related not only to the security of aggregates supply for economy, but also those linked to environmental concerns and social issues. The Sustainable Aggregates Resource Management project (SARMa), an EU Southeast Europe (SEE) activity, has as its objectives the development of common approaches to sustainable aggregate resource management (SARM) and sustainable supply mix (SSM) planning in SEE. In this paper we describe the SARMa project structure and report results for Work Package 3 activities pertaining to best practices for environmental management, the reduction of illegal quarrying, and the promotion of recycling of quarry wastes, construction and demolition wastes and other materials.

The purpose of this paper is to present how Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations can be used to study the flow across the main airways of a mine ventilation system. in particular, the flow through the transition zone between the upcast shaft and main fan ductwork was investigated. These studies consider potential design modifications of this transition zone to reduce the energy cost. Although CFD has many advantages, it does not completely eliminate the need for experiments, which are still needed to validate numerical solutions. For this reason, data collected during actual mine tests and CFD simulations are compared in this pa- per. This comparison allows a better understanding of the flow phenomena. Moreover, once the numerical solutions have been validated, CFD can be used with better confidence to predict the effect of changes in ductwork configurations on energy losses. CFD reduces the number and cost of tedious experiments, while enabling a broader scope of design comparisons.

The process of marine diamond mining off the west coast of southern Africa started in the late 1950?s by a Texan, Sammy Collins, and subsequently continued by De Beers to the present day, has proven to be an excellent proving ground for the development of technology and mining systems that ensure a sustainable and financially viable business. The Underground Research Laboratory (URL) , a major geotechnical research facility, is currently being developed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) , 120 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The URL is part of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program, which is assessing the concept of nuclear fuel waste disposal in a vault deep in stable plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield (Simmons, 1986). Comprehensive geotechnical research and development activities are being carried out in conjunction with excavation? and construction of the underground facilities.

In order to be able to design an adequate mine ventilation system it is necessary to understand how pollutant masses disperse into turbulent ventilation air streams. The mixing of gases and dusts with ventilating air, and dispersion of these pollutants in mine airways, are important flow or transfer problems. For the solution of such problems, the finite difference technique is often used. In this paper, numerical approximation schemes for the solution of the mass transfer problem have been developed using several explicit finite difference schemes. Results from these schemes have been compared with the analytical solution for spatial and time increments using the concept of Root Mean Square error. The comparison of various schemes reveals that the explicit finite difference schemes analyzed here give more accurate results at lower velocities, though the results are dependent on the spatial and time steps considered. At higher velocities the schemes tends to oscillate about the analytical solution. INTRODUCTION In mining, most of the mine air pollutants, such as respirable dust, methane, blasting fumes and diesel exhaust, are produced at the mine face and in haulageways. Injection of any of these pollutants in the mine ventilating air causes disturbances of the equilibrium state of the pollutant concentration of the ventilating air. The mixing of these gases and dusts with the ventilating air are typical examples of mass transfer processes. Pollutants are diluted by the stream of ventilating air flow along airways and discharged into the outside atmosphere of the mine through a return shaft. The dispersions of these pollutants in mine airways are important flow or transfer problems. Knowledge about pollutant sources, emission and transport of these pollutants are essential for ventilation planning and design to ensure good engineering control over air quality, quantity, and environmental conditions. Modeling of mass transfer phenomena in mine ventilation is largely based on extensive studies of turbulent dispersion in wind tunnels and the lower atmosphere of the earth. The general approach in the formulation of models lies in the recognition that these mass transfer phenomena can be conceptualized as a flow problem that can be solved by the general application of Taylor&apos;s theory (1954) of turbulent flow and diffusion with modification appropriate static and dynamic parameters. If the face zone is initially contaminated by a pollutant over a long section (e.g. instantaneous exposure of large gas accumulation, rapid methane release etc.), the process of decontaminating the mine workings can be regarded as displacement and diffusion of the tailing edge of the cloud of contaminates in the form of a semi-infinite gas body, for which a one-dimensional mass transfer equation is represented by: [at + u • ax = Ex ex2 + f (x,t)(1.1)] In Eq. (1.1), the term [~~] is the rate of growth of the concentration in the differential element, while a [(5xx )] is the net gain of material due to convective transfer. The two terms balance the total loss of material due to turbulent dispersion that is represented by [Ex . 21] and f(x,t), the source term for the pollutant in the roadway. Several cases of mass transfer that occur in mining can be identified and modelled using the conservative volume element method. The governing equation, along with the associated boundary and initial conditions, source terms and their solutions are detailed elsewhere (Bandopadhyay and Ramani, 1988, Devala, 1989). Only one mass transfer situation is presented (Figure 1) here for the present analysis. Mixed Evolution of Pollutant (multiple pulses) Typical examples of these situations are emission of pollutants from multiple diesel vehicles in the face area, and gas emission from standing pillars as well as from broken coal seam during coal cutting with a continuous miner. With the rise in global demand for pure copper, there is an urgent need to consider the processing of low-grade chalcopyrite ores. Ammoniacal leaching solutions have been reported as effective and efficient leachants for the dissolution of chalcopyrite. This work reports on different parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of a Nigerian chalcopyrite-rich siderite ore obtained from the Wase local government area of Plateau state, Nigeria, and assayed as 11.30 weight percent copper.
