Most ores and coals contain sulphide minerals such as pyrite, FeS2, the sulphur portion of which is a ready substrate for a variety of sulphur oxidizing bacteria. Although there are several bacteria capable of oxidizing sulphide minerals, the most often discussed culprit is Thiobacillus ferrooxidans.. Oxygen from the air slowly oxidizes pyrite into sulphuric acid, but T- ferrooxidans can increase this reaction rate several 100,000 times.

Contract 240 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link comprises construction of twin4.7 km long running tunnels through a densely populated area of East London. The tunnels were constructed by EPBM in Sands and Sandy Clays, passing 4.4 m below the existing London Underground tunnels, and at depths of 20–30m below ground level beneath the Great Eastern railway lines into London Liverpool Street and a series of railway bridges and hundreds of buildings. This paper describes how the project team managed the challenges relating to the issue of settlement: mitigating settlement effects, prioritising the structures to be assessed, controlling resource expenditure by incentives and flexible response to urgent work relating to unforeseen events such as ground collapse and discovery of unusual structures.

OVERVIEW Like many older metropolitan areas across the U.S., the Greater Cleveland area is served by a combination of separate sanitary sewers and combined sanitary-stormwater sewers. In 1966, a Master Plan was implemented by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (District) to minimize pollutant overflows into adjoining Lake Erie and its tributary rivers and streams, that would occur during wet weather events. One component of the Master Plan was to reduce the load on combined sewers by constructing new conveyances to intercept separate sanitary flows and convey them to upgraded regional waste water treatment plants for priority treatment. As part of a 15-year program to construct 74 km (46 miles) of new interceptors, the West Leg Interceptor (WLI) Project intercepts flows from four decommissioned waste water treatment plants (WWTPs), and conveys those flows to the new Southwest Interceptor (SWI), which conveys the flows to the Southerly Treatment Plant, a tertiary level treatment facility. The WLI Project was built in sections to permit decommissioning of the WWTPs as each segment of the interceptor system was completed and put into service. Flows from the first of the four WWTPs was converted to the WLI in November, 1992; the final connection was achieved in July 1994. The WLI comprises 9.1 km (5.7 miles) of 21 to 29 m (70 to 95 ft) deep mainline interceptor tunnel, four vortex drop structures, approximately 2 km (1.3 miles) of shallow tunneled connector sewer to the mainline, approximately 2.9 km (1.8 miles) of open cut connector sewers, five construction work shafts (not including one work shaft constructed under SWI Contract 6 at the north end of the WLI), and 15 access shafts.

Exploration by Anaconda Minerals Co. in the Rico area from 1978 through 1983 resulted in dis¬covery of the Silver Creek molybdenum deposit. The drill-indicated resource is 40 Mt (44 million st) of 0.31% Mo, and projections suggest that the deposit may exceed 182 Mt (200 million st). No source intrusion has been intersected by drilling, but its presence is sugested by intramineral silicic alkali-alaskite porphyry dikes observed at the surface and in drill holes. Age dates and fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit was formed 5.2 ± 0.2 m.y. ago and that more than 1200 (3937 ft) of cover has since been removed by erosion. The deposit is hosted by Precambrian quartzite and greenstone, and Paleozoic sediments. Three prominent faults intersect in the vicinity of the molybdenum deposit, and one of these, the Last Chance fault, strongly influenced the shape and location of the deposit. The juxtaposition of host rocks across the Last Chance fault reflects significant offset spanning at least three different periods. Wallrock alteration associated with the deposit includes potassic, phyllic, and propylitic zones in noncalcareous rocks and garnet and anhydrite-diopside zones in the carbonates. All +0.2% Mo mineralization is within the potassic and garnet zones. Premineral faults that intersect the deposit contain the only surface molybdenum, tungsten, and fluorine anomalies. Dispersion halos of the indicator elements were defined by drilling in the discovery phase of exploration, and are particularly well-developed in the hanging wall of the Last Chance fault.

This paper presents a nonlinear integer goal programming model that optimizes a mineral production schedule while considering the penalties and bonuses based on quality variations in the final product. It involves five coal quality goals plus a profit objective in its formulation and uses the weighting method of goal programming for a solution. The goals to be sought involve the sulfur, ash, heat content, moisture content, and ash softening temperature of the blended coal product. The model is linear in its handling of most of these goals but uses a piecewise linear integer formulation for the sulfur and heat content bonus and penalty schedule. The model is applicable to any mineral product blended from several different sources and subject to a varying price dependent on blended product quality or qualities. However, it seems to be most pertinent to optimizing production schedules for coal deliveries to power plants. Accordingly, the model is applied to a hypothetical coal production problem where multiple coal mines are operated to supply a final blended product to a power plant. In this example, the price paid for the coal is assumed to be a function of five of the most important coal qualities. The problem is solved as a direct function of the coal supply contract, thus removing the necessity of determining the weighting coefficients on a subjective basis.

The dissolution of gold in cyanide_ leaching has been we11 published with the genera1 acceptance that gold is oxidised by oxygen and stabilized by complexation with cyanide [1]. The dissolution of gold is essentially an electrochemical process. The rate of the anodic gold dissolution is controlled by the cyanide concentration. - (2) While the cathode reduction of oxygen is controlled by dissolved oxygen concentration - (3) There are a number of factors influencing the concentration of oxygen, and if 1owered substanth.lly will effect the efficiency of the leaching plant. These include: "' salinity "' temperature "'partial pressure "'oxygen consumption rate The use of pure oxygen for· cyanidation is only beneficial if oxygen is rate limiting, Conversely a slurry saturated with air (typically 5 - 8 ppm) may not be enough for maximum leach rate. DISSOLVED OXYGEN (MAXIMUM) IN WATER At steady state, the rate of the cathodic reaction must equal the rate of the anodic reaction. Thus the rate of gold dissolution is dependent on both the· cyanide and oxygen concentrations. - (4) Using an average of Do/Den =· 1.5 [2] (where Do and Den are the oxygen and cyanide diffusion coefficients) the table below illustrates the maximum effective oxygen concentrations for given cyanide levels in clean water [3].

The process uses SO2 (liquid or gas, or solutions of sulfite salts, or from burning elemental sulfur), plus air that is dispersed in the effluent using a well agitated vessel. Acid produced in the oxidation reactions is neutralized with lime at a controlled pH generally in the range 7 to 10. The reaction requires the presence of soluble copper as a catalyst which can be supplemented by copper sulfate if necessary. The process can be applied to the detoxification of gold and silver mining waste streams, such as carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tailing pulps, barren solution bleeds, pond waters and heap leach rinse solutions and also to plating shops wastewaters. The SO.jAir process has substantial advantages over two of the main alternative methods of cyanide destruction, namely alkaline chlorination and hydrogen peroxide. Alkaline chlorination is highly penalized in terms of reagent consumption. Chlorine is a strong oxidant reacting with species other than cyanide present in the effluent such as thiocyanate and sulfides. Furthermore alkaline chlorination is an incomplete detoxification process. Iron cyanide is not removed and the potential for harmful by-products species exist. Consequently final effluents may be subject to additional treatment in order to comply with regulatory demands.

The first 0.7 m3 (1 cu yd) diesel load- haul-dump vehicle (LHD) arrived at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD in I969 to muck a ventilation drift. Others soon followed. Mechanization has subsequently changed stoping methods, manpower requirements, ventilation practice, the definition of minable reserves, and it has impacted safety and health. These have all had a direct bearing on the economics of producing gold ore from deep underground. Mechanized mining Before mechanization, production quotas at Homestake were met by several open cut-and-fill (OCF) mining methods. OCF mining relied on jackleg and wagon drilling, electric and compressed air slushing and cribbed raises brought up through the fill. Even square- set stoping was used until about eight years ago. The mine became 100% mechanized in 1988. The two current stoping methods are mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR). In 1992, MCF accounted for 54’S, VCR for 44% and development/uphole for 2% of the 1.4 Mt (1.55 million st) of underground ore produced. These methods are typically ramp- based and use diesel-powered LHDs, trucks, pneumatic drill jumbos and utility vehicles. Electric LHDs and rubber-tired compressed air muckers have also been used in VCR scrams. Pfarr (1991) and Mitchell (1980) provide good overviews of current production methods.

Results for the first underground test of the ventilated drum in a U.S. coal mine are presented. Tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines through a contract research program with Foster-Miller, Inc., to evaluate dust control effectiveness in a western mine and for gas control in a full scale laboratory facility. The ventilated drum is designed to reduce the amount of dust from cutting by drawing dust-laden air from the cutting zone through twelve water- powered "dust capture" tubes built into the shell of the shearer drum. High pressure water up to 1 12.48 kg per cm2 (1,600 psig), released from sprays, induces maximum airflow of 1.89 m3/sec (4,000 cfm) from the face side of the drum and provides cleaning for respirable dust and improved methane dispersion. At the gob side of the drum a deflector plate, attached to the cowl arm, turns the water spray and a proportion of the cleaned air back into the cutting zone. More than 50 ventilated drums have been installed to date in England, and their tests carried out on fixed height and single-ended ranging drum shearers have shown reductions in respirable dust of 60-80 pct, as compared with conventional wet cutting. The U.S. test on a double drum shearer showed slightly lower reduction.

An increasing concentration of coal production, especially in the circumstances of intensive methane inflow makes the coal mine managing staff apply new techniques of safe mining. It paves also the way for scientists to develop new directions of investigations and implementation of state-of -the- art technical solutions. Simultaneously, it could be noticed that the funds assigned for expansive 'En situ ' investigation are continuously decreasing. Better and better results are reached when applying computer technique in calculations of the parameters of ventilation process. Recent theoretical and experimental investigations of air and gas (methane) flow in longwall areas with caving, combined with the implementation of methane drainage system allowed to create, a mathematical model and consequently to elaborate a computer supported numerical simulation of discussed phenomena. The mathematical model has been modified and the simulation program was prepared in such a way that the software is convenient for a user looking for an optimal solution. The paper presented the methodology of optimal choice of following parameters: - ventilation system - rate of flow through the wall. The procedure takes into consideration keeping a safe level of concentration methane in air flowing through the longwall as well as the criterion of maximum methane concentration within the methane drainage pipe line. Results of variant computer simulation regarding the longwall with caving are shown in graphs and tables.

Near the village of Villarino de los Aires, in the province of Salamanca, Spain, is an existing underground hydroelectric power plant. A major enlargement was undertaken to increase the electrical generating capacity, under a contract awarded to a joint venture of Dragados & Construcciones, S.A., Entrecanales y Tavora, S.A., and S.A. Conrad Zschokke. The enlargement required the excavation of an underground system of tunnels, shafts and chambers adjacent to existing facilities and interconnected with these facilities. The existing machine hall and transformer chamber were both extended, requiring excavation of the rock that constituted the existing end walls of these chambers. The drilling, blasting and excavating of the underground system had to be done without damaging existing underground openings or any of the existing structures, equipment or instrumentation facilities. This required careful control of vibrations, air waves and dust. The joint-venture contractors preferred to use electric blasting methods, if these methods could be implemented in a safe manner. The safety question had to be evaluated carefully. High electrical potentials existed at the site because of the electrical generating and transmitting facilities that could not be shut down. Electrical fields were carefully studied prior to the beginning of the work. This was done both in the underground environment and above the ground surface. Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

Modelling of industrial sulphide flotation based on data collected in several flotation plants is discussed. A mechanistic approach is used in which it is recognised that flotation is a two stage process with concentration occurring both in the pulp and in the froth. The important features of the model, which is a kinetic model, are – 1. for each particle species there is a range of flotation rates which corresponds to the range of particle sizes, 2. the flotation rates of the liberated gangue particles which have no hydrophobic properties are dependent on the flotation rate of water and are controlled by variables such as the air and frother addition rates, and the pulp level, 3. as an approximation the valuable sulphide particles may be regarded as being present in two groups with high and low flotation rate constants, 4. increase in the addition rate of collector tends to increase the proportion of sulphide particles which are in the high flotation rate constant group. The actual flotation rate of each group of particles is a combination of an "inherent" flotation rate and a flotation rate which is dependent on the flotation rate of water, at particular air and frother addition rates and pulp levels there is a physical limit to the rate at which particles can be transported into the concentrate and this is recognised in the

The Kitsault molybdenum deposit lies along the east margin of thecoast Batholith Complex near the head of the fiord of Alice Arm. It is 800 km (497 miles) northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia. The deposit is located on Lime Creek 8 km (5 miles) from the coast on a wide dissected upland valley at an elevation of 600 m (1969 ft). It is an area of coastal rain forest with high annual precipitation and extremely high winter snowfall. Although the area is of high relief, outcrops are largely restricted to ridges and canyons. Most of the area is covered by the coastal vegetation or wet swampy upland areas. The south edge of the molybdenum deposit was exposed in a sharp canyon; however, outcrops over the remainder of the deposit were largely restricted to a few small exposures of resistant hornfels. The mineralization is related to an elliptical porphyry stock of 52.3 m.y. age which intrudes argillites and microgreywackes of the Late Jurassic Bowser Group. A circular zone of alteration, with a diameter of about 700 m (2297 ft), occurs in the north end of the stock and the molybdenite mineralization is concentrated in the outer parts of this zone of alteration. Thus, the northern part of the mineralization occurs partly in the hornfels and partly in the stock, whereas the southern side of the ring of mineralization cuts across the middle of the stock. Zoning within this system includes a central circular area of almost complete replacement of quartz plus K- feldspar and this grades sharply outward into a phyllic zone. Clay alteration is largely localized along late faults. The ring of molybdenite mineralization is partly overlapped and partly surrounded by a zone of pyrite mineralization. Some chalcopyrite is coextensive with the pyrite zone. Late polymetallic veins fill two conjugate fracture sets. These quartz veins contain galena, pyrite, some chalcopyrite, and a number of lead-bismuth sulfosalts.

For two consecutive years the author and his wife have been fortunate enough to have been invited by the Peoples Republic of China to work with Chinese geologists of the Geological Bureau of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industries (MMI). Our visits, each of which lasted 7-8 weeks, took us to northwestern Sichuan, central Anhui, and much of Hebei Province, as shown in the accompanying drawing. We were asked to evaluate, criticize, and offer suggestions on the exploration and mining techniques used by the Chinese. Our commission both years was centered on gold, although we were also to visit other operations when the opportunity arose. In 1986, the visit primarily concerned with disseminated "Carlin" type gold deposits; in 1987, with "Greenstone" type gold deposits. Gold has been targeted by the Chinese as a metal of importance to the nation. Several governmental agencies have received direction and budgets to seek and develop gold properties. Besides the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, gold is being sought by the Ministry of Geology, the China Gold Corporation, and reportedly the Peoples Army. There is considerable competition among these agencies. It is not uncommon to find two or more agencies working in the same general area. However, communication between the groups is minimal. Last year, we toured a small mine at Bambishan. We could see a diamond drill across the valley. The rig belonged to another Ministry and my guides voiced their curiosity to know what their competitors were finding. Mining, too, is not the monolithic bureaucracy that most Westerners anticipate in China. There are various levels of mining. These differ not only in sophistication, but in ownership. First, for small deposits the state allows "Peoples Mines". These can be owned and worked by individuals. The individual owner-miner may hire relatives or neighbors and give them a wage or he may turn the mine into a joint ownership situation. They

The United States is faced with increasing demands for electricity, coupled with continuing demands for crude oil and gas. Superimposed on these' national requirements are our national requirements for clean air and elimination of thermal pollution of our rivers. From the coal viewpoint, this situation is complicated still more by the rapid advances in nuclear power. In this paper, I hope to show a way to use our Western coals as a solution to this involved national problem by producing: 1. High quality crude 2. Low cost power 3. Economic byproducts We could expect these products to be made at one site in an integrated plant that would mine (extract) coal, process it, and convert it to electricity. Perhaps the most important attribute of the plant is its reduced water requirement and the elimination of air pollution from the power cycle. Quite logically, such a plant would probably recover valuable byproducts, such as pipeline gas, sulphur, cement, aluminum, and the like. Although the plant projected in this paper is a conceptual one, it is based on work now underway by Government and industry. Prediction of the future is a most hazardous occupation, but plants such as the one projected are based on current knowledge and can be expected to reach commercial operation in the near term future.

The Gatineau shaft described in this paper was an excavation of about 38 m diameter and 21 m depth constructed in Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River just north of Ottawa, Ontario. A large sewage lift pumping station-was to be constructed in this excavation. Subcontractor for the shaft excavation and initial support was Beaver Underground Structures Ltd., of Dorval, Quebec. Mr. William C. Cox of Beaver conceived the idea for the support system used in this excavation, and was responsible for the construction activities. Initial analysis and design concepts for the lining system were developed by Mr. Ronald E. Heuer. Detailed lining design and construction monitoring were the responsibility of Mr. Jean-Michel Loignon. Geologic conditions indicated by two borings within the shaft area are illustrated in Fig. 1. The shaft excavation would be in the sensitive Leda silty clay. The clay is of stiff to very stiff consistency, with an insitu vane shear strength averaging about 115 KPa (2400 psf) and a reported low value of about 87 KPa (1820 psf). Low strength values were from the middle of the clay layer, with higher strengths at the top and bottom. Average shear strength at the level of the base of the excavation was about 137 KPa (2860 psf). Remolded vane shear strength averaged about 20 KPa (420 psf), with a reported low of 13 KPa (270 psf). Based upon average strength values, the clay sensitivity is 5.8. The clay has an average water content of 53% (range 43 to 66%), which is near its liquid limit (average 56%). The clay unit weight is about 1760 kg/m3 (110 pcf). Underlying the shaft site at shallow depth is limestone bedrock within which the piezometric head is approximately equal to the original ground surface elevation. For shaft support, a -cast-in-place concrete wafer system was considered, but was discarded because of time restrictions imposed by concrete placement and curing. At first glance the staid Joralemon background does not seem to equate with the life of adventure that irresistibly called me for over 70 years. But my ancestors had their adventures too. My father's family were Dutch Reformed Protestants who had energy or daring enough to come to America to escape the Catholic persecution that followed the Massacre of St. Bartholemew. The first Joralemon came from Friesland to New Amsterdam m 1636, just after Peter Stuyvesant. My father's mother's family, the Berdans, were French Huguenots who came to northern New Jersey only a little later to escape the Catholic domination in France. Some say that the first Berdan to come to America was given all the land between the Passaic and the Hacken-sack Rivers by King James. Whatever, the Berdan family settled there and was able to make a scanty living by farming and selling their produce in Manhattan. The spirit of adventure in my mother's family was just as tenuous. Gamaliel Beaman was pastor of a shipload of Puritans who came to Massachusetts in 1636. Gamaliel's descendents were peaceful farmers and some ministers in New England and later New York State. They had got all of the adventure out of their systems in the long and dangerous voyage across the Atlantic to escape religious persecution. The Joralemons and the Berdans married into families that had been in America almost as long as they had. On my father's side the Berdans, Doremus, DeGreys, Vanderbeeks, and Varicks showed by their names their Dutch or French Huguenot stock. The only one who achieved any fame was Peter Varick, who was George Washington's military secretary during the American Revolution. After this he was nine times mayor of New York and was one of the founders of Kings College, later Columbia University. He was responsible for one of my few ancestral claims to distinction. "Coal mine ranks No.1 among the 6 major high-risk industries, so it is no doubt that the senior managers in the coal mine bear more stress than other industry executives. The massive working stress results in serious influences on the physical and mental health of the senior managers of coal mine, which might also induce the safety risk in the coal mine. Therefore, to evaluate the senior managers’ working stress and put forward strategies of mitigating the stress is of great theoretical and practical significance in improving the physical and mental health of the senior managers and reducing the safety risk in the coal mine. The research on the working stress has been made in the western countries for almost 50 years, China began the research in the mid and late 1990s, the research is spread across multiple industries including education, medical treatment, computer and aviation. However, there is little research on the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine, so the available literatures are few. In the paper, we, based on the working stress model of Robbins and through questionnaire survey, analyze the element composition of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine; then, we construct the evaluation indicator system of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine based on the individual factor, organization factor and environment factor; after that, we determine weights of each evaluation indicators by using the improved triangular fuzzy number weight method, and set up the evaluation model of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine on the basis of the fuzzy comprehensive assessment method.
