Underground mining at Kanowna Belle commenced in July 1998, using a sublevel open stoping method. The use of this stoping method necessitated the use of a cemented fill material for filling primary and secondary stope voids. A detailed engineering study recommended the construction of a cemented aggregate fill (CAF) system for Block A, in favour of paste fill. The CAF system consisted of a crushing and screening plant, a surface binder preparation plant and an underground fill station. Conventional underground dump trucks were used for CAF delivery. Since CAF plant commissioning in March 1999, 1.2 million tonnes of CAF have been placed underground. CAF segregation was the most significant quality control issue during CAF system operation. At the hangingwalls of filled stopes, CAF segregation sometimes occurred to such the extent that the resulting fill material was essentially uncemented coarse aggregate. This caused some CAF dilution during the extraction of adjacent secondary stopes. Numerous CAF were prepared on site for strength testing. A relationship has been formulated that allows estimation of the CAF uniaxial compressive strength in MPa, based on the cement content (c) and porosity (n), as follows. [ ] Practice at Kanowna Belle has confirmed that laboratory testing results cannot be applied for optimising the mix design of cemented rock fills that do not exhibit debris flow behaviour during placement. The grain flow characteristics and consequent marked segregation dominate the in situ fill strength. A detailed review of backfill requirements for the lower mine indicated that the total net present cost of CAF and paste systems was similar. Several significant operational advantages offered by a paste system have resulted in its selection for the remaining mine life. The construction of a paste fill system at Kanowna Belle is currently in progress.

In 1981, a gas outburst accident occurred in the Yubari Shintanko coal mine, the only expectant mine in Japan, it caused 93 deaths. As a result, Yubari Shintanko closed in 1982. This major disaster was a turning point for sustainability of Yubari City, the largest coalfield in Japan. Finally, Yubari City was bankrupted in 2007. This paper aims to explore how miner’s children experienced this disaster and felt about region, family, and themselves, and to explain the relation between region declining and children’s lives. The data of this paper are the archived 600 essays, written by the junior high school students at the time of the disaster. There are three findings. First, the children who lost their father were the most shocked. They faced profound sadness. But they expressed that they had decided to overcome their sadness with surviving family. Second, the children who didn’t lose their father were also influenced. They were anxious about the future of Yubari, their family, and themselves. Furthermore, they decided to strive for their future. Third, they understood the disaster as a turning point of Yubari declining and looked ahead their future outside of Yubari. In conclusion, this disaster created their hopelessness to Yubari region and, as a result, promoted the decline of the city through their migration to other city. Furthermore, it is important to clarify that Yubari City has to continue the struggle to the regeneration.

Large-scale use of CCBs in mine environments involves filling surface and underground coal mines with ash to address hydraulic problems, AMD, backfilling and subsidence. The environmental risk of land filling CCBs is generally evaluated by the Toxic Characteristics Leaching Procedure (TCLP) or the Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP). However, there is doubt regarding the applicability of these tests to long-term CCBs leaching behavior in groundwater associated with coal mines. The Mine Water Leaching Procedure (MWLP) was developed to provide a site specific risk assessment tool. The MWL Pprocedure is presented in this paper and compared with TCLP as a study.

Underground rock drilling has gone through intense development during the last 25 years. Mechanization and hydraulics have greatly increased the efficiency of drilling and improved the environment of the drill operator. As the total economy has become more and more important, the development has resulted in greater overall economy in drilling. The latest evolution step is computerization of drilling equipment. Computerization has been applied to tunnelling jumbos, long- hole drilling rigs and bolting rigs. With today's technology computerization is the natural way to increase capacity and productivity of the drilling process. However, it is still impractical to implement total "robotic" drilling. In computerized drilling the operator's role continues to be vital in controlling the drilling process and in analyzing the effect of individual parameters on the whole excavation process. Today this is called "CAD" - Computer Aided Drilling.

As with most industries, mining must now include in its plan of operation mechanisms to address a project's environmental impact. New regulations have focused attention on the potential environmental impacts of industry, particularly the handling of wastes. Modifications are currently being proposed to the Bevill Amendment. And development is ongoing of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Subtitle D regulations specific to mining wastes. The result is a growing concern on the part of lenders, developers, buyers and owners regarding acquisition and ownership of mining properties. One of the most effective tools in managing the regulatory requirements is an environmental audit. An environmental audit can be a literature review to determine regulatory requirements. If I told you tonight at the outset that my prognastications for the future of mine ventilation were imparted to me by a palm reader or inspired by a vision, you'd dismiss what I had to say before I said it! If, on the other hand, I told you that my forecasts were the result of an elaborate computer model, derived from a complex algorithm, which in turn relied on finite element analysis -- and the entire projection confirmed by on-site experiments with a turbo hybrid-flow mine fan -- you'd sit up in anticipation and hang on my every word!! All of which places me in a terrible dilemma, because my predictions really lie somewhere in between. My intent is to talk to you out of my background of forty years in mine ventilation, looking ahead to conditions that I expect to prevail in the next fifteen years. You may be curious why I picked an unlikely time span of 55 years for my overview, and my response is that it bridges a career lifetime. "The last forty", of course, corresponds with the period of my professional employment since graduating with a B.S. and M.S. here at Penn State. "The next fifteen" bridges the period I expect (the Lord willing) to remain professionally active -- and coincidently brings us into the beginning of the 21st century. (I must confess to stacking the deck a bit: Since it's infinitely harder to look ahead than to look behind, I purposely minimized the forecast period and maximized the history! Besides, "forty" and "fifteen" have a nice phonetic ring, perfect 20/20 vision sums to "forty", etc., etc.). With these disclaimers, I'll invite you to join me now in a fast 55-year overview of mine ventilation, of necessity limited to a broad-brush treatment of the subject. (After all, this is an after-dinner talk, not a marathon!) In each- segment, I've selected the seven topics that seem to me of paramount importance: in the first part, seven accomplishments in retrospect, and in the last, seven expectations for the future. (The number "seven" needn't confound you, either: In the bible, it signifies "wholeness" or "completeness".))

The gold processing plant location in the Chalkidiki coastal area has been studied as a land use conflict case study in the context of a EU research program. The sustainability assessment of the plant establishment is made on the basis of a group of sustainability principles and criteria adopted in the framework of the SPECTRA project. Since the gold processing project has not been implemented yet its sustainability assessment is made on the documents submitted by TVX Gold during the procedure for the siting consent and the granting of environmental conditions. The assessment, appearing on a table, reveals an important effort to achieve a high degree of protection during the operation and after completion of the activity. The specific nature of the development and the knowledge of the local opposition in favour of tourism development have obviously influenced the priorities set.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the influence of turbulence on the fine bubble flotation of fine-sized (minus 40 micron) galena in order to improve flotation efficiency. Fine bubble flotation was carried out in a spinning-disk flotation cell and was compared to results obtained from flotation in a conventional cell at equivalent agitation levels. An automated electrochemical technique was used to monitor the turbulent velocity distributions of the fluid within the cell as a function of time and position. The velocity profiles were used to increase the precision of the fine particle, turbulent flotation model. While improved flotation response was obtained with intense agitation, the effect of bubble size was small. These results matched the model's predicted response for fine particle flotation.

China was the world’s leading producer of barite during 1995 with 35%. The United States followed with14%. India produced 9%. Other producers included Morocco, Turkey, Mexico and Germany. Domestic production of barite during 1995 was estimated to be 600 kt (660,000 st). Nevada produced 85% of the total. Georgia was the second leading barite-producing state. The United States is the world’s largest consumer of barite. During 1995, it used 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st). US reliance on imported barite during 1995 was about 63%of total consumption, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Olympias arsenical pyrite concentrate assaying 25 g/t Au, 40% S, 40% Fe and 12% As is highly refractory in nature; an oxidation pretreatment step is required to liberate gold and render it amenable to cyanidation. In the present study mineralogical analysis techniques including Image Analysis, SEM, EPMA, SIMS, Mossbauer, ICP/MS, etc., have been employed in order to investigate the mode of gold occurrence within the Olympias pyrites. Bacterial oxidation was used as a case pretreatment route and bacterially leached products were examined under SEM. The mineralogical observations and the relevant metallurgical and cyanidation test data were combined to establish a correlation between the mineralogical characteristics of the raw and oxidised products and conditions prevailing over the oxidative pretreatment step and the gold liberation achieved.

Introduction Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock-fragmentation mechanism of continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting-drum rotational speed. This paper presents a discussion of the effects of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation. The removal of rock ridges/walls between adjacent grooves is analyzed with three hits mounted simultaneously on the cutting head, while the bit tip angle was varied from 600 to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 25.4 to 50.8 mm (1 to 2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Respirable dusts generated during the course of the experiments were analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism of continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. A review of the literature revealed that a considerable amount of research has been carried out on rockcutting processes. Many authors agree that the mechanical cutting efficiencies of mining machines (e.g., continuous miners, shearers and road headers) are affected by a host of parameters. Some of these parameters are machine controlled, some are operator controlled, while others are uncontrollable. Efforts were focused on understanding the influence of parameters such as bit spacing, cutting depth, attack angle, bit type, drum speed, bit geometry (i.e., tip size, shape and tip angle) and rock type on the cutting process efficiency in terms of specific energy consumption and respirable dust generation (Strehig?? et al., 1975, Hanson et al., 1979, Khair et al., 1989). Roepke et al. (1976) in an attempt to study the dust and energy generated during coal cutting using point attack bits found that the dust and the specific energy consumed both decrease as the depth of cut increases. The four fundamental stages of dust generation luring rock fragmentation are identified by Zipf and Bieniawski (1989). Coal breakage by various types of wedges was assessed by Evans and Pomeroy (1966) in an extensive experimental study on British coals. Yet the industry today requires further attention and guidance to optimize the energy consumption and dust generation during the rockbreakage process. This paper attempts to give a better understanding of the influence of some of the parameters listed above and focuses on further improvement in the rock-cutting process. The specific energy consumed for different types of bits used and the respirable dust generated are analyzed in the context of the variation of a few other parameters. Laboratory investigation The experiments were performed in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories located at West Virginia University. A rock-cutting simulator designed and fabricated by Khair (1984) was utilized for this purpose. The details of this machine are available in the literature (see Khair 1984). For this study, a series of preliminary experiments was carried out to determine the optimum cutting frame advance speed. This was intended to facilitate a maximum cut depth of 31.75 mm (1.25 in.) at an advance rate of 0.525 mm/s (0.0207 ips) for all types of bits being used and various bit spacings being considered. To look into the cutting-process efficiency of a continuous miner in the laboratory, several parameters of influence are being considered. Besides the bit-geometry parameters, machine- and operator-controlled parameters, such as spacing of bits on the cutting head, the cutting head rotational speed and the total cutting depth during an experiment, are varied. At the time this paper was written, only part of the completed experiments were ana¬lyzed, and a number of experiments were still being carried out following an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental plan to assess the effect of all of the above¬mentioned parameters on the cutting efficiency in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. Injection of alkaline waste-lime slurry was performed at a West Virginia surface coal mine site, to attempt neutralization of acid springs by an alkaline recharge method. Deep trenching (>5 m) using an excavator yielded the most effective injection into the aquifer. Water from two springs, 90 m from the deep trench, showed 70%-80% reduction in acidity in response to injection. Neutralization persisted >170 days after treatment, with pH between 5.1-5.7 and metal acidity from 25-60 mg/L. A minor fraction of lime introduced was consumed. The sustained neutralization is attributed to reaction of acid water with subsurface lime, entrained below the wafer table by macropore infiltration. Characteristics of groundwater transport are critical in determining recharge structure location.

Modes of microbial attack of metal carbonates, metal silicates, metal oxides and metal sulfides are summarized. The current status of microbial redox mechanisms, whereby metals in metal oxides and sulfides are mobilized, is discussed. Opposing theories of a single mode of attack involving interaction with a microbially produced reductant or oxidant in the bulk phase and of dual modes of attack involving a reaction requiring physical contact between microbe and mineral surface on the one hand and microbial production of a reductant or oxidant in the bulk phase that reacts with the mineral on the other hand are considered. No one mode when finally completely unraveled should be expected to fit all cases. Some biochemical, electronmicroscopic and spectrophotometric approaches for elucidation of missing details of different modes are suggested. Field sampling was conducted in Lake Junin, Peru in order to assess the post-depositional reactivity of the highly contaminated lake sediments. High resolution profiles of dissolved Fe, Mn, SO42- and H2S across the sediment-water interface illustrate that the organic-rich sediments in the main basin become anoxic within several millimetres of the sediment-water interface. These permanently submerged deposits in the main basin serve as a diffusive sink for dissolved Zn and Cu. Conversely, the periodically unsaturated deposits in shallow areas are characterized by the remobilization of Zn and Cu in the deep acidic (pH < 4) pore waters, resulting in the release of these metals to the overlying water column.

The present work emphasizes the selection in the separation of the apatite/calcite by the direct anionic flotation versus the double flotation, with a reverse second stage of the Jacupiranga phosphate ore. The double flotation would allow the obtaining of two concentrated solutions: one of them mainly constituted by a calcium carbonate material (CaCO3) and the other one, phosphatic (apatite). The calcium carbonate concentrated solution is used for the production of cement. The presence of phosphatic material in the calcium solution is not desirable, phosphor being a harmful element to cement. On the other hand, smaller quantities of calcite in the phosphate concentrate would represent a substantial economy in the processes of production of phosphated fertilizers. These processes make use of sulfuric acid to the solubilization of the apatite and the presence of calcium material consumes acid. Also that, when carbonates are solubilized, unwanted products are formed resulting in losses in the process and diminishing the quality of the fertilizer produced. These characteristics are discussed in the paper and are compared to another Brazilian phosphate ore, the reverse route of which can be considered more adequate. The results are discussed according to recent discoveries, and special emphasis is given to the use of corn starch and its crucial role in promoting the selection in the direct flotation process.

A mathematical model based on the finite element method of stress analysis has been used to describe the behavior of the western wall of the Kimbley Pit as its slope was steepened from 45 degrees to 57 degrees. Theoretical stress changes because of slope modification are slight except at the toe of the modified slope. Magnitudes of stress created are small when compared with the strength of a competent rock. Resulting displacement patterns point out the need for determining the in situ state of stress at a site prior to excavation or modification. A comparison of model results with field measurements shows that, in general, the model has described the measured behavior of the west wall of the Kimbley Pit remarkably well.

The Macassa Mine is a mature mine with a 61 year history of continuous production. The majority of past production has been derived from a zone called the &apos;04 Break (Main Break). Recent underground mine exploration has been successful in locating several neighbouring ninera1ized zones. This paper will characterize the spatial location, geometry and mineralogical properties of these secondary zones. Future plans for underground mine exploration to follow-up on these target zones will be outlined.

The U. S. Department of Energy&apos;s (DOE) Yucca Mountain Project (YMP) is a scientific endeavor to determine the suitability of Yucca Mountain for the first long term, high level nuclear waste repository in the United States. The status of this long-term project from the construction perspective is described. A key element is construction of the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF), which is being excavated with a 7.6 m (25 ft) diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM). Development of the ESF may include the excavation of over 15 km (9.3 mi) of tunnel varying in size from 3 to 7.6 m (10 to 25 ft). Prior to construction, extensive constructibility reviews were an interactive part of the final design. The intent was to establish a constructible design that met the long-term stability requirements for radiological safety of a future repository while maintaining flexibility for the scientific investigations and acceptable tunneling productivity.
