The major development in the evolution of the conventional subaeration flotation machine has been the steady increase in the size of the individual units. In 1950, large machines were of 1.35 m3 (48 ft3) volume capacity. In 1989 the largest volume capacity operating is 85 m3 (3,000 ft3 ) These improvements have enabled the mining industry to operate successfully in the face of declining ore grades and adverse metal prices. This paper describes the design features and performance characteristics of a number of significant flotation machine designs.

Since 1998, environmental extremists have waged war with the central Appalachian coal industry in West Virginia and Kentucky. This paper discusses the fundamental strategies adopted in the simulation package FIRES developed for ventilation simulation under mine fires. These fundamental strategies include (1) fire characteristic curves specifying the development of a mine fire with time, (2) simulation of fume spread in a ventilation system, (3) determination of the aerodynamic effects of mine fires on flows; and (4) dynamic simulation of flow state under mine fires. The major functions of the simulation package are also addressed. The package has been used to simulate an experiment of mine fire. A comparison is made between the simulation results and the measured data.

In the past, it was not unusual for coal preparation plants to discard fine run-of-mine coal. This practice has changed due to increasing quantities of fine material, improvements in beneficiation methods, and the need to recover revenue from these fines. It is in this context that the coal industry has increasingly been turning to froth flotation for fine coal beneficiation. Reagent schemes have been developed to promote coal flotation and to treat the resulting refuse material. While reagent technology has improved, however, most plants rely on manual control of reagent dosing and circuit operation. This often results in misuse of reagents, loss of coal recovery, and consequent loss of revenue. Fine coal circuit operations can be dramatically improved through automation. Intelligent process control systems are now in use which are capable of optimizing reagent usage, maximizing coal recovery, and minimizing chemical costs associated with refuse handling. This paper describes a type of control system currently used in preparation plants, and provides data and information on the significant improvements such systems can produce.

The Riverside Badlands Tunnel is a 13 km (8 mile) long segment of the Inland Feeder Project. This 3.65 m (12 ft) finished diameter water tunnel presented many challenges that had to be overcome to take the project from concept to reality, not the least of which were the diverse ground conditions. Construction of the tunnel was carried out by a single tunnel boring machine (TBM) in one tunnel drive. The project is considered a success due to the accurate baseline established for the ground conditions; the approaches used to mitigate adverse conditions; and the appropriate use of TBM excavation methods, which achieved rapid advance rates despite the challenging ground conditions.

Located south of downtown Seattle, the Beacon Hill Station & Tunnels is the key section of the southern segment of Sound Transit’s proposed new LINK light rail system. This paper presents an overview of the design, which includes 4,300 ft of segmentally-lined bore twin tunnels and a deep mined station. With platforms located156 feet below grade, the station itself is only the second large-scale mined station in soil the US. Its complex geometry combined with variable soil conditions—sands, silt sand clays with slickensides—challenged the designer’s to come up with a SEM-based design that addresses the owner’s risk, cost and schedule concerns.

A conference attended by a limited number of invited participants was held last September in Denver under the auspices of the Underground Construction Research Council of ASCE funded by the National Science Foundation (RANN) to explore the problem of accelerating the transfer of advanced geophysical technology, used principally in the petroleum exploration industry, into more effective and widespread use in subsurface investigations for underground construction. There are technological problems, but technical difficulties and unfavorable ratios of benefits to costs are not the major obstacles. The problem centers on the complex way in which potential net benefits are translated into effective incentives to innovate for each actor in the complex web of individual, corporate and institutional entities involved in the planning, designing, building, funding, operation and ownership of major underground construction projects. The entities responsible for site investigation, design concepts and specifications do not directly bear the risks of unanticipated costs and failures, nor directly gain from savings. The conventional unit-price construction contract is strongly implicated in blocking innovation. Problems of risks and incentives, more than technical feasibility, must be solved before large investments in technical adaptation and adoption can occur.

Refractory gold ore pretreatment processes continue to receive much attention. This paper compares the relative economics of treating ores by oxygen pressure oxidation, roasting and bacterial oxidation with or without preconcentration by froth flotation. Capital and operating cost estimates for each method of pretreatment were prepared and these estimated costs and ore sulfide grades then are used to compare the process economics. The study indicates that the most significant item affecting the economics is the amenability of the ore to flotation. The cost benefits of flotation are $10-13 per tonne ore processed (2%-4% s=, 10:1 ratio of concentration). In most cases bacterial oxidation has the lowest overall cost, especially if less than complete oxidation of the sulfides will give acceptable recovery, however bacterial oxidation has yet to be practiced on a large scale. In all situations pressure oxidation shows the highest cost. However, the cost differences between the treatments are small, less than $7 per tonne.

Mining managers trying to rapidly reduce production costs tend to implement a traditional set of topdown managerial practices: reductions in production volume, employee layoffs, renegotiation of supplier contracts, cancellation of employee training, restrictions on travel, reductions in office supplies, and so forth. While these practices do reduce costs, the benefits are often limited in both magnitude and duration, and the workforce is usually left demoralized. Successful cost-cutters take a different approach. They make the continuous reduction of costs a priority for all members of the organization, whether managers or workers. The culture of these firms emphasizes the commitment, voluntarily given, of individuals and work groups to this goal. Cost-cutting practices often reject all of the traditional methods mentioned above, but are far more numerous, innovative and successful. This culture of cost reduction is the result of a set of leadership competencies that establish direction for the organization, align the organization's various constituencies with this direction, and motivate and inspire the organization. Cost reduction then becomes a routine task rather than a heroic achievement.

During the last 30 years, a dramatic increase in the supply of byproduct sulfur substantially reduced the share of the market held by Frasch-mined (non-by-product) sulfur in North America. Even though Canadian sulfur production is not discretionary, the geographic remoteness from the large US markets and the high transportation costs associated with delivering sulfur to those markets has meant that Canadian producers act like discretionary producers in many important ways. They have effectively replaced the US Frasch producers as the cost-marginal sulfur source to large US markets. Implications of this change in market structure include more volatile sulfur prices and longer sulfur price recessions.

Precambrian terranes in the Rocky Mountain region decrease progressively in age from the Archean Wyoming Province (> 2.5 b.y.) to the late Proterozoic in West Texas (figs. 1,2). Within the Wyoming Province, most dates fall near 2.7 b.y. although some are recorded at 2 3.8, 2.9, and 2.6 b.y. Although Penokean (- 1.8 b.y.) deformation and plutonism are recorded in southeastern Wyoming, most Precambrian rocks south of the Wyoming shear zone, which separates the Archean and Proterozoic provinces, are < 1.76 b. years in age. Supracrustal rocks in Colorado, western Arizona, and northern New Mexico fall in the range of 1.72-1.76 b.y., those in central New Mexico about 1.65 b.y., those in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico about 1.70 b.y., and those in West Texas 1.1-1.2 b.y. The Wyoming Province is comprised chiefly of 2.7 or 2.9 b.y. tonalitic gneiss terranes intruded by 2.6 b.y. granites in the central and southern parts of the province. Supracrustal rocks are minor and include greenstone belts comprised chiefly of pillow- ed tholeiites and graywackes and remnants of quartzite-shale successions. Metamorphic grade in greenstone-gneiss terranes ranges from upper greenschist to amphibolite facies and in quartzite-gneiss terranes from upper amphibolite to granulite facies.

Background Results of the above study in the August 1991 issue of Mining Engineering offer valuable lessons in the solution of cutter-roof problems. The original study plan was initiated by the discussion authors to solve the problems using the "stress control method" of mining (Serata 1976,1982; Serata, Carr and Martin, 1984; Serata and Gardner, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Preston, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Shrinivasan,1986; Serata and Kikuchi, 1986; Serata, Preston and Galagoda, 1987) However, the plan and the planner were changed to the arrangement reported in the paper. The change was considered reasonable at the time due to the mine engineers&apos; uncertainties about the stress control method. Consequently, the basic principle of the study was shifted from the original stress control method to the method described in the paper, which will be called the "yield pillar method" for the purposes of this discussion. The paper convinces the reader that the yield pillar method fails to solve the cutter-roof problems. This doesn&apos;t mean that the stress control method also fails. Actually the contrary is true, as discussed below. Limitation of the yield pillar method The paper illustrates clearly how poorly the yield pillar method performs in solving the problem. The reason for this failure is the lack of the protective stress envelope needed to stabilize the cutter roof. Unfortunately, the protective envelope cannot be formed properly without utilizing the stress control method of mining. Changing the pillar size does not make much difference in the roof stability.

This paper provides a new approach to deal with control of ore-rock excavation by means of the optimal control theory-an important branch in cybernetics. In the optimal control theory, the elementary functions are state-transition function and objective function. According to the characteristics of mining planning and production, a set of formulation are established to cope with ore- rock excavation. The formulations include basic formula, anti-disturbance formula as well as other special formula. The new approach has been successfully used in several mines of China.

Jet fan (ductless fan) ventilation in underground mines and tunnels is a subject requiring further attention. At present there are no accepted procedures or guidelines for this type of ventilation. The main reason has been the absence of sufficient general data, which has hampered the development of rules. There is great potential for using jet fans in terms of both effectiveness and economics because they eliminate the need for ventilation tubing. In the present studies a procedure is described and results are presented from a jet fan modeled in a square section wind tunnel. The major purpose of the studies was to provide fundamental data on jet fan performance after it was realized that previous work had been limited and too site specific. The jet fan position in relation to the tunnel walls was varied in order to study the influence of confining walls on entrainment rates and the resulting aerodynamics. A clearer understanding of the fundamental principles of jet fan applications was obtained.

Potassic alteration domains of greenstone belt lode gold deposits are characterized by systematic partitioning between different groups of incompatible elements, such that Al, Ga, Th, U, Ti and V are decoupled from K, Rb, Ba, Cs and Tl. The former group of elements have concentrations and interelement ratios in alteration domains which reflect host rock control, implying approximately isochemical behaviour. In contrast, K, Rb, and Ba are strongly coenriched, and linearly correlated over th4ee orders of magnitude in abundance, where K/Rb = 260, and K/Ba = 40: K/Cs (-10 ) and K/T1 (-2x10 ) are also correlated, though more weakly. Lithium abundances, and Rb/Sr ratios are erratic in altered rocks. These interelement trends, collectively, are present in deposits variously hosted by ultramafic, mafic, or felsic volcanic rocks, and sediments or granitoids.

INTRODUCTION In exploration for rock tunnels, the geology should not only be described, but its effect on excavation and support assessed. It is not an easy task to correlate exploration results with support and excavation requirements, even when the exploration program is detailed and geologic conditions are relatively well known. Many of the significant geologic features are subtle and their effect is difficult to interpret from exploration results. However, in similar geologic settings, there are specific geologic features which will cause recurring support problems. Such features should be actively sought out when exploring in a given geologic setting. In blocky and seamy rock, the primary features controlling performance are the joints, shears, and shear zones. This paper describes the effect of such features on the formation and movement of rock wedges in tunnels driven in foliated metamorphic rocks in Washington, D. C. and New York City. In both areas the foliation commonly forms a N-S striking plane of weakness along which major shear zones, shears, and joints have formed. In addition, the structural history of the two areas has been similar, so that there are similarities in the orientation and character of the other major joint sets and shear zones in the rock mass. The observations were made in tunnels ranging from 10 to 70 ft in width and excavated at depths ranging from 80 to 800 ft. Most of the tunnels described were deep enough to be located in unweathered rock, or in rock only slightly weathered along joints and shears. The kinetics of the leaching of antimony oxide ore (Sb2O4) in aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions has been investigated. This dissolution reaction is a heterogeneous solid-liquid reaction. It has been found that the leaching temperature and the concentration of hydrochloric acid turn out to be the significant influencing factors on the leaching rate. The apparent activation energy for the leaching reaction was determined to be 63.5 W/mol within the experimental temperature region of 50O to 90O C. The experimental results indicate that the leaching process is controlled by the rate of the chemical reaction.

Pea Ridge Iron Ore Co., previously Meramec Mining Co., a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp., mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge mine. The Pea Ridge property, now wholly owned by St. Joe, is located near Sullivan, MO, about 112 km (70 miles) southwest of St. Louis. The ore body was delineated in the mid-1950s by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drill¬ing in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the ore body was minable. Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Pro¬duction commenced in April 1964. The ore body is overlain by about 396 m (1300 ft) of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 792 m (2600 ft) long, and up to 182 m (600 ft) thick. It dips about 1.39 rad (80°) and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 45-m (150-ft) intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the ore body on 58-m (190-ft) centers. Banks of stopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modi¬fied shrinkage stoping method (Fig. 1). This was done by undercutting a 12 m (40 ft) wide by 45-m (150-ft) long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 1.5-m (5-ft) intervals. A 20-m (65-ft) sill was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fin¬gers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a "lattice" of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar re¬covery program was necessary (Fig. 2). INITIAL PILLAR RECOVERY PROGRAM The program was started in the upper western por¬tion of the ore body, furthest from the shafts. Due to the fact that the ore body narrows in the western extremity, the stope orientation was changed to mini¬mize required development. This left pillars 18 to 24 m (60 to 80 ft) wide and up to 79 m (260 ft) in length. The area selected for the start of the program had been developed between the uppermost level at 419 m (1375 ft) below surface and the 510-m (1675-ft) level. Due to the 91-m (300-ft) difference in depth, sublevels were driven on 15-m (50-ft) intervals and the ore was taken by rather classical sublevel stoping methods (Fig. 3). This left a structure with accesses compatible with drilling with 114-mm (41/2-in.) bore drifters mounted on columns. Most holes were drilled 63.5 mm (21h in.) diam and reamed to 100 or 127 mm (4 or 5 in.). Practical depth capability was about 21 m (70 ft) for holes above horizontal and 13 to 15 m (45 to 50 ft) for holes below horizontal. The interdependence of these long pillars necessitated that several of them be blasted simultaneously, making large blasts the only practical approach. Due to the required length of such loading cam¬paigns, it was necessary to select an explosive which could stand in the hole in an underground mine for a 4 to 6 week period. After some consideration a pump¬ able water gel was selected for both uphole and down¬hole loading. This afforded a high velocity, high density explosive which could be handled in large quantities. Loading the downholes was a fairly straightforward process. The holes were lined with an 8 mil polybutylene plastic sleeve and water gel was pumped into them with a double diaphragm pump mounted on the bottom of a stainless steel tub with a 81-kg (180-1b) capacity. The aim of this paper is the study of the pollution of soils in greenhouses because of the use of pesticides. The degree of pollution was studied in relation with the mineralogical and pedologic properties of the soil. The study was con-ducted in the region of Kountoura, Palaiochora, situated in the south of the prefecture of Hania/Greece. Several samples of soil, originated from 4 greenhouses were analyzed. 5 pesticides with organic drastic compounds were chosen for analytical determination using GC-MS from 18 which were applied in total during the period of sampling. It was concluded that the adsorption of pesticides in the soil of greenhouses is connected with the percentage of the clay fraction and the content of organic carbon.

It was in 1982 that the first SK-80 flash flotation machine was introduced at Hammaslahti concentrator in Finland to produce a final grade copper/gold concentrate. Since then the size and number of flash flotation units has steadily developed with the SK-240 being introduced in 1984 and the SK-500 unit in 1990. To date over 130 units have been installed worldwide many of which have been used to maximise the recovery of precious metals such as gold and platinum by preventing overgrinding in the grinding circuit prior to flotation. This paper briefly describes results achieved at several major gold mines in Australia and overseas that operate large flash flotation cells.
