Production of CO2 is an inevitable consequence of burning fossil fuels, with the only CO2 sequestration technique feasible in the immediate future being its injection in various geologic media. This paper discusses the factors that influence the injection, movement, and storage of CO2 into deep coal seams, while simultaneously increasing the production of methane. The results of a laboratory-scale study to evaluate the movement of CO2 in coal, its ability to displace methane, and the capacity of coal to retain CO2 are presented. The findings are compared with observations at one of the two field-scale pilot operations practicing CO2 injection in coal. Finally, the paper summarizes the research issues that require further investigation.

Bacterial pretreatment was evaluated as a process for enhancing gold recovery from a refractory ore from Newmont Cold's Cold Quarry deposit. This ore is refractory due to sulfide locking of the gold and preg-robbing carbon. The microbe Thiobacillus ferrooxidans effectively oxidized the sulfide component of the ore, but the preg-robbing carbon continued to be active. Thiourea was examined as an alternative to cyanide for extraction of the gold from the biooxidized ore. The thiourea, coupled with CIL, was effective for gold extraction resulting in up to 89% gold recovery for the sulfidic-carbonaceous refractory ore. The thiourea gold complex appears not to be bound by the preg- robbing carbon of the ore when in the presence of recovery carbon (CIL)

One of the fundamental precepts of experimentation is the isolation of a single variable to quantify its individual effect. Unfortunately, the variability of natural rock joints has frustrated such isolation. This variability and the high cost of securing a large member of natural joints has lead to increasing experimental dependence on stage shearing, artificial tension fractures and/or model materials. The new apparatus described herein allows for the first time replication of real joints with field scale asperities. It employs a diamond band-saw blade with computer controlled feed table to cut joints with high precision. The feed system is capable of placement to tolerances similar to those of a high quality computer plotter. The accompanying software allows the table to cut any desired joint shape (repeating or non-repeating) within certain, over-all size limitations. Resulting joint surface dimensions and roughness as well as shear resistance indicates that the joint surfaces are reproduced with a precision similar to that possible for the control of other experimental variables such as normal and shear forces.

It is used in fluxes, glass making, mineral fillers, environmental applications such as flue gas desulphurization and water treatment, soil conditioners, animal feeds, and as a construction aggregate. This presentation provides an overview of limestone distribution in the United States, it’s production, the variety of products produced, and a brief review of the primary uses for limestone.

Manufacturers referred to high capacity thickening as a filtration operation rather than thickening in spite of the fact that it is performed in thickeners and that conventional thickeners can be operated as high capacity thickeners by changing the feeding level and operate it in a different manner. In this work we derive a phenomenological model for high capacity thickening based on mass and momentum balances. The difference with a conventional thickening is the presence of a surface source within the variable domain. The model can be used to design, simulate and to develop control strategies.

As part of the Unconventional Gas Program at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, we are developing a model that allows for time-dependent tracking of the fluid front and flow pressures during the quasi-static or dynamic fracturing of jointed rocks. Application of the model is directed towards both short fast fractures (as in tailored pulse loading) and long hydraulically induced fractures (massive hydraulic fracturing). The thrust of this research is to determine crack extension characteristics due to specific joint systems and fluid properties and to correlate pumping records with crack behavior in jointed systems.

INTRODUCTION A team effort by the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor can help avoid serious problems on a construction project. It can save cost and time for both Owner and Contractor, as illustrated in the following case history of the West Zone and Siouf Keblia Collector System in Alexandria, Egypt (Contract 02-AID-83/84). Under the bilateral agreement made in 1980 between the United States of America and the Arab Republic of Egypt, the United States, through the Agency of International Development (USAID), gives approximately $1 billion per year as a grant to Egypt for various development projects. The Alexandria Wastewater Management System was selected in 1981 as one such project. The Egyptian Government Agency responsible for this work is the Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). A joint venture of two U.S. consulting engineering firms, CH2M HILL, Inc., and Metcalf & Eddy, Inc., called Wastewater Consultants Group, along with two local subconsultants, Engineering Consulting Group and Warith Engineering Co., were selected by AGOSD to study the sewer system and develop a plan to serve the immediate and long-range sewage disposal needs of Alexandria. Wastewater Consultants Group is currently involved in Phase I of the Master Plan. This initial step in providing Alexandria with an operating sewerage system for the current and near-term population (year 2000) consists of the design and construction management of 140 kilometers of collector and force main pipelines (including 9 miles of pipe jacking and tunneling in very soft clay), five new pumping stations, extensive rehabilitation of two treatment plants (built in the 1960s but never operated successfully), and installation of a sludge handling system. INTRODUCTION This paper discusses two uranium tailings waste disposal studies that reflect the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulatory actions and their changing requirements during the mid to late 1970's. Present guidelines require that all new uranium tailings impoundments be designed and constructed to eliminate, to the extent that it is reasonably achievable, exposures and risks to the public from the tailings. This includes positive measures for control of seepage losses from the impoundment and for control of radiological releases caused by wind and water erosion. Long-term stability of the reclaimed impoundment is also a very important requirement. That is, it is intended that the tailings impoundment, once it is reclaimed, will require little or no care or maintenance as long as the uranium tailings remain a hazard. Principally because of the long-term stability objective, the NRC has now identified subsurface burial of the tailings as the "prime option" for tailings disposal. The environmental implications of these proposed regulatory actions are obviously desirable. The economic implications the actions may have on a particular project are not always so obvious because they are so dependent on environmental suitability of site conditions. Selection of a site with favorable topographic, geologic and hydrologic conditions will usually result in the most economically and environmentally attractive alternative for tailings disposal. The first project discussed in this paper was initiated before the NRC guidelines had been developed to favour subsurface burial. At the beginning, seepage and radon emission control requirements were moderate. Constraints were imposed on the design by site topography, geology, and project capitalization considerations, factors which were dealt with according to straightforward engineering and design principles. More serious constraints were imposed by changing regulatory requirements. Unlike the more usual engineeringrelated constraints, regulatory requirements were upgraded during the design process, causing the design itself to undergo numerous modifications. INTRODUCTION We will discuss here only the subway construction phase; that is, two to five years at a given location--not the long-term analysis. We also will compare some tunnel construction methods used for BART and in Los Angeles. Typically, urban planners and engineers try to balance a new mass transit system to include tunneled subways, cut-and-cover construction in city streets, and elevated guideways. Their decisions are based on many factors, most of which can be quantified. But there are some socio-economic-environmental factors which are almost intangible, or nonquantifiable, and these are rarely included in the final report for a rapid transit system. There are two reasons for this: First, it is difficult to evaluate disruptions and psychological inconveniences to individuals and to the community during the construction period, and even more difficult to assign costs because the valuations are always subjective. Second, the rapid transit project capital costs are given in the final report and the public knows them; but the intangible social costs are borne by the affected neighborhood community, not the entire city, and as such they are "hidden costs," which in fact may add as much as 25 percent to the total system cost.

INTRODUCTION, CONCEPTS, AND MEASUREMENT Introduction Periods in the history of man, from his earliest appearance to the present, are often characterized by the principal materials used. In nearly all cases, the material or fuel is of mineral origin-stone, copper, bronze, iron, coal, and so forth-indicating the principal ingredient of the tools or source of power of the period. Each of these periods represented great improvement over the preceding one in terms of human well-being, as measured by population growth and other indicators (Cipolla, 1978). A major reason for the improvements in production and well-being was the nature of the material or fuel, each successively superior to the preceding, which made it possible to produce more food, fuel, shelter, and clothing with a given amount of labor. If we accept this well-documented description of economic progress as accurate, we may then turn to the consideration of two related questions concerning this development. The first, easily answered,-is why man spent long periods of time (millenia, in many cases) making tools from inferior materials, such as copper, instead of passing directly to superior materials, such as iron and steel. The second, closely related question, concerns the relation between the rate of economic growth and the quantity of mineral reserves available at any time. For the first question, the answer is that the technology required to discover, extract, and process each successive material had to be discovered and developed before the material could be used. Once the technology was available, the new material could be and was exploited widely, raising productivity-output per unit of labor- and consequent consumption per person. This familiar idea underlies a fundamental principle of the economics of resources, namely, at any time, available resources depend upon available technology. No mineral or other raw material is a resource unless the technology has been developed to utilize it. But once the technology is at hand, the new resources associated with it provide the means for economic growth and rising levels of living. This principle is subject to certain conditions. For example, governments or other institutions may prevent a mineral from being used, even though the technology is available. And, if a mineral is located in a remote place, transportation charges may make it uneconomic to exploit. Such minor qualifications do not, however, change the thrust of the argument that technology is the overriding determinant. With respect to the second question, it might seem apparent that the greater the quantity of reserves available, up to some point, the more economic growth will be facilitated. This line of reasoning leads to the conclusion that as re- serves are consumed the quantity available will be reduced and economic growth will eventually be restrained. Reasoning of this sort underlies much popular (and scholarly) thought, in which depletion of mineral and other resources is assumed to lead to constraints on economic growth, through higher materials costs and absolute limitations on materials use. Both hydrometallurgical and vapometallurgical processes often involve ores that have been previously ground and size classified. When the valuable mineral is substantially liberated, the chemical reaction is likely to occur on the particle surface and the particle core will shrink as the reaction proceeds. If the chemical reaction products are solid materials then a solid shell, usually porous, will form around the shrinking core. This is known as the core/shell or topochemical reaction model. Using a spherical approximation for the particles, equations have been developed to express the extent of chemical conversion of the particle, depending on which one of the following process or mass transport steps is rate controlling:1 (1) chemical reaction at the particle surface, (2) diffusion through the thickening reaction product shell or (3) mass transport through a boundary layer surrounding the particle. In a previous paper2 these equations were coupled with the Gates -Gaudin-Schuhmann equation 3 4 describing the distribution of particle sizes resulting from comminution of rocks and other brittle solids to develop reaction yield curves expressing the weight fraction of metal or other valuable component of the feed that was chemically converted as a function of residence time. This was done for (a) batch, (b) continuous plug flow and (c) continuous back-mix flow (continuous stirred tank) reactors or process vessels. INTRODUCTION For many years, in Europe and in North America, pre-formed metallic and concrete segmental linings in tunnels have been used extensively as temporary and permanent ground support systems. In the United Kingdom the use of cast iron as a means of ground support in mining shafts dates from the first decade of the 19th century. Although at that time wood tubbing was extensively employed, cast iron was used in shafts at Wallsend and Percy Main collieries in the North East of England. The original form of cast iron tubbing consisted of cylinders which were lowered bodily into the pit and were built from the bottom up, but subsequently they were subdivided into segments which involved the making of vertical as well as horizontal joints. Principally, the practice of providing immediate pre-formed support developed because of the incompetent state of the surrounding ground and, although this still remains the over-riding consideration nowadays, several other factors are examined before finally deciding what type of lining to use. Other branches of sub-terranean technology such as tunnel thrusting or immersed tubes (both of which involve pre-formed linings) can provide alternative solutions to problems hitherto thought better solved by bored tunnelling methods. However, this paper will confine itself to those linings developed for the more traditional tunnelling methods. Usually the shape of segmentally lined tunnels is circular because this profile is the most suitable for bad ground and many tunnelling machines. This article deals with the effects of high-explosive and nuclear explosions in rock masses. We first highlight the strong influence of geological discontinuities, such as joints and faults, on ground motion characteristics. Then, we briefly introduce the Discrete Element Method, as a new technique for numerical simulations. II is shown to be far superior to continuum-based approaches, when dealing with the dynamics of discontinuous media such as jointed rocks. Finally, we simulate the ground effects from a generic contained nuclear explosion, which bears some similarity to the SHOAL event in granite. This calculation is intended to emphasize the influence of the near-source geology on the distribution of energy, and on the motion at various azimuths in the medium.

Oxide particles are commonly used as fillers in plastics, paper, rubber, etc. (particulate composites). The successful fabrication of such composites is dependent upon the adhesive strength of the filler particles to the matrix. The compatibility of the matrix and the filler particles is generally enhanced by the adsorption of surface modifiers such as surfactants and polymers at the particle-matrix interface. To develop a scientific basis for the selection of the appropriate modifiers it is necessary to understand their adsorption mechanisms. specifically, the adsorption of polymeric additives is attributed to a combination of chemical and electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. Hydrogen bonding has been suggested to be the primary adsorption mechanism for nonionic polymers. However, a literature survey of the Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-oxide system suggested that PEO, a nonionic polymer, was substrate specific. A systematic study was undertaken to investigate the adsorption mechanisms of PEO on oxide particles. It was determined that strong Bronsted acid sites on the surface interact with the ether oxygen, a Lewis base, of PEO to induce adsorption. In this work, characterization of PEO binding sites on oxides is reported and the mechanisms of PEO adsorption are discussed.

The effect of pretreatment potential on the response of a gold electrode for Eh measurements in sulfide solutions was examined in terms of measured Eh values and electrode response time. The electrode response time is defined as the time required for the electrode to reach a steady-state value. The relationship between measured Eh values and the hydrosulfide ion concentration is established. The effect of pH, the reversibility of the gold electrode in the sulfide solutions, and the reproducibility of measurements are also investigated. A mixed potential theory is proposed to explain the observations.

Introduction Mining has always been sensitive to the fluctuating income of downstream customer industries. The industry is now becoming more vulnerable to booms and busts as economic pulsations increase and demand for mining products shows little or no long-term growth. As the general economy has become more cyclical in the last decade, the capital-intensive primary industries have become more aware that timing as well as preparation of survival plans are vital in investment decisions. Strangely, however, some of us have not yet included the business cycle in our feasibility studies. Cyclic prices and volumes and fluctuations in profits and cash flows do not fit our linear models. The increased cyclical nature of our economy is recent and poorly understood. Forecasting peaks and troughs is still more an art than a science. Nevertheless, avoiding business cycle parameters can lead to error in value estimation and contingency planning of new projects. Metal and Mineral Industries More than half the iron and steel, aluminum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, tin, nickel, molybdenum, cobalt, and chrome that we mine, smelt, upgrade, and recycle goes to construction, transportation, capital goods, and consumer durable industries. All are cyclical. Their products are consumed slowly, so replacement can be postponed in recessions. Purchases of such goods are usually financed by debt, and their customers are sensitive to highly cyclical changes in interest rates. During prosperous periods, people tend to buy capital goods despite high interest rates. Upstream industries also tend to be whipsawed by inventory cycles. With high interest rates and good transportation, downstream fabricators can lighten their inventories during recessions. They know that upstream suppliers can deliver supplies and raw materials immediately, And, with the advent of electronic accounting, the fabricator with timely inventory information can afford to hold fewer contingency stocks. Likewise, when recovery returns, inventories surge back through industry pipelines, accelerating demands on primary supplies. The price elasticity of most primary products is low. Their share of the value of finished products of the industries they supply is generally small. The 60 kg (130 lb) of aluminum in a car is vital. But whether it costs $80 or $130 will not visibly influence the demand for an automobile. With low elasticities of demand, the primary producer is hit with decreases (or increases) in prices and in sales volume, during recessions as well as recoveries.

A load rating procedure was performed to evaluate safe load capacity of the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT), FDOT Tunnel No. 871071 SR 887. The rating procedure performed on a total of eleven stations beneath roadways and with fill depth less than the tunnel exterior diameter (42 ft). Calculations on tunnel sections passing beneath roadways were performed to evaluate the structural response of the sections subject to moving vehicular loads, dead load, and earth pressures. Ratings were performed in accordance with AASHTO and FDOT guidelines. The procedure considered two types of vehicles (HL-93 and FL-120) and two rating levels (Design level and Permit level). As part of HL-93 vehicle, Tandem load was also considered for rating, separately. For HL-93 and HL-93 Tandem, inventory and operating level ratings were performed. The results show rating factors are high. The minimum rating factor is 16.8 using Inventory truck HL-93. For Permit level using FDOT FL-120 truck the minimum rating factor is 6.9. As can be seen, rating factors are higher than comparable analysis for bridges. This paper explains how the procedure can be implemented for tunnels and evaluates the rating results.

Given the dependence of the mineral industry's future on effective innovation, it is essential that we understand the causes of failure. Case histories are presented and the out- comes are analyzed in terms of the driving forces for innovation and the steps taken during development. Industry's current attitude toward and capacity for technological innovation are discussed, and a methodology is suggested for predicting successful innovation.

NESMI stands for ?Network on European Sustainable Mining and Processing Industries? and will run until 2005. Within NESMI there are different ways to set up indicators and evaluate them throughout the NESMI Members. First analyses concerning the Demand and Competence within NESMI are developed. New focus points for analyses can be implemented into NESMI.
