Particle size segregation is a common phenomenon in many particulate processes and has many undesirable effects. The size segregation which occurs on a belt conveyor causes a serious problem for on-line particle size measurement using image-based techniques. Whether particle size distributions measured from the top layer of the belt are representative of the total particle population is largely dependent on the degree of size segregation. Therefore, it is important to understand the nature of such size segregation in order to make appropriate corrections for on-line particle size analysis. Monte Carlo simulation has been used to provide segregation information on particles with simple geometry and the results can help to determine important factors in experiments with irregularly shaped particles. It is expected that the relationship between the particle size distribution of the top layer and that of the entire particle population on a belt conveyor can be formulated as a model based function.

The possibility of producing metallic chromium from Cr2O3 via the aluminothermic route, with no external energy supply, was the subject of this laboratory-scale research. The experimental study focused on investigating the individual effects and quantitative optimization of the charge contents, i.e., the additions of CrO3, Al powder and CaO (or BaO). The highest chromium recovery of 98% was attained with the additions of 12% CrO3 and 1.2 times the stoichiometrically required amount of Al powder. The optimum CaO addition giving the highest chromium recovery was found when the CaO/Al weight ratio in the charge was equal to 0.3. When BaO was used, however, 95% Cr extraction efficiency was obtained at a BaO/Al weight ratio of 0.15.

A series of salicylaldoxime derivatives with alkyl group substitution in the main chain and the side chain were synthesized and evaluated for the flotation of malachite, cerussite and smithsonite. The effect of chain length and the position of the substituent group on the selectivity of separation amongst oxidized copper, lead and zinc minerals are discussed in this paper.

INTRODUCTION Placer Dome's Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture operation is located some 75 km northeast of Winnemucca, a community in north central Nevada. Formerly known as the Getchell Gold Corporation and First Miss Gold, the operation mines refractory ore from the Getchell and Turquoise Ridge gold deposits located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range above the Kelly Creek Basin in the Potosi Mining District. Mining has been ongoing at Getchell since shortly after its discovery in 1934, and was the nation's second leading producer of gold after Homestake in the early 1940s. Over its history the Getchell property has been mined for gold, tungsten, molybdenum and arsenic; mining methods varied from open pit mining to underground mining; processing options included conventional milling, flotation, roasting, heap leaching, and most recently pressure oxidation followed by CIL (carbon-in-leach). As an historical note, the US Bureau of Mines developed the use of carbon for gold recovery at Getchell during the 1940s (Horton 1999). Placer Dome acquired the property in May 1999. The pressure oxidation plant was mothballed in July 1999 and the property was placed on care and maintenance in February 2002 pending further exploration results. The property is currently ramping up to full production status. A joint venture agreement (75% Placer Dome, 25% Newmont) was established with Newmont Mining in 2003 and ore is processed at their nearby Twin Creeks autoclave plant. Mine dewatering is a key element to success. Arsenic is a ubiquitous mineral in many of the mineralized areas of northern Nevada, necessitating treatment of water prior to re-infiltration.

MICHAEL J. CRUICKSHANK SENIOR AUTHOR Marine mining is a very broad field. It encompasses every facet of terrestrial mining but with the unique addition of a superimposed liquid overburden, which is itself mineralized. It is the unique aspects of marine mining that are discussed in this section. In keeping with the times, a systems approach is taken in the presentation of the material. The environment is first described, and this is followed in logical sequence by the common requirements for working there, then the mineral exploration phase, the exploitation and, finally, the operational restraints imposed by man and nature. Free use is made of tables and figures from original and published works and extensive listings of reference material round out each section. The title "Marine Mining" was chosen in preference to ocean or underwater mining because it is broad enough to include oceans, beaches and inland seas. The selection of terms sometimes may seem odd but they have not been chosen arbitrarily. All things are reduced, where possible, to basics and defined. Applying systems terminology, the word "platforms" is used in the functional sense and includes not only airborne, waterborne and fixed platforms, but man himself in his capacity as a working diver. If there is confusion it is often because of familiarity with a word in a context personal to the reader. For example, what does extraction mean to you-or mining or exploitation? Cost data have been interspersed throughout the section whenever they could be obtained. The use of these data should be tempered with understanding because no two situations are alike and improvements in marine technology are constantly being made. The names of individual authors are listed with each subsection. Where no name is given, the responsibility has been that of the senior author. Acknowledgment is sincerely made to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and latterly the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for encouraging and supporting the preparation of the work ; to the secretarial staff at the Marine Minerals Technology Center and to Donald Eisman for editing. To the many other contributors who may not be listed by name, grateful acknowledgment is also due. It is hoped that the chapter will be useful to the practicing mining engineer who suddenly is assigned to marine work or to the experienced marine engineer who is equally suddenly assigned to mining work. It is not possible to put "everything-you -need-to¬-know" into one section, but. the very full bibliographies at the end of the text should adequately fill in for those who wish to know more. 20.1-THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT Marine mining is set apart as a separate discipline by the marine environment. The following subsections describe the environment from the point of view of the physicist, the chemist and the geologist. The interrelationship of these disciplines with the economic mineral potential of the oceans and seas is apparent from the description of the marine mineral resources. The marine environment is an extremely complex natural phenomenon with which the marine mining engineer must learn to live. It can be the source of his wealth or his frustrations and sometimes both. It can never be ignored.

The west central Upper Peninsula of Michigan contains a large resource of graphitic slate. The slate has potential industrial use as a substitute for shale currently used in the production of portland cement. Some of the unweathered slate, however, has a high concentration of pyritic sulfur that can create emission problems when processed in a kiln. A low-cost method to reduce the sulfur content of the slate through the optimization of pyrite oxidation in a bio-heap leaching operation was investigated. In this study, optimal conditions for the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were created to promote pyrite oxidation and, therefore, sulfur removal from the slate. Preliminary lab scale flask tests using crushed and sized slate (-40 + 100 mesh) and T. ferrooxidans bacteria in a sulfuric acid medium resulted in 70% oxidation of pyrite over a one-month period. Subsequent column leaching tests on coarser materials (-3/8+1/4 in.) operated for six months resulted in a maximum reduction of total sum of 75%. These data suggest that bio-heap leaching to remove sulfur from the slate for use as a kiln feed material is viable.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT The Straight Creek Tunnel site is located approximately sixty (60) miles west of Denver, Colorado, on Interstate Route 70 in the vicinity of Loveland Pass, in the Rocky Mountains. The ultimate project will consist of dual two-lane vehicular tunnels with a building at each portal to house mechanical ventilation equipment and other installations. The tunnels run virtually east-west on an ascending 1.64 percent grade for a distance of approximately 8,900 feet, and will pass beneath the Continental Divide at an elevation of about 11,000 feet above sea level. The maximum cover is 1,450 feet and each tunnel is approximately 48 feet wide by 50 feet high as excavated. The work now under construction consists of the North Tunnel, which initially will have two-way traffic. Ultimately it will be the west bound lanes for Interstate 70. The completion of the North Tunnel will be the fulfillment of a long felt need for better communication through the high Rocky Mountains of central Colorado and is a vital link in Interstate Route 70. 8.1 INTRODUCTION Several methods currently exist by which gold may be recovered from a pregnant leach liquor. Two of these methods are discussed in this chapter, the Merrill-Crowe (zinc cementation) process and the carbon adsorption process. These two methods represent the most frequently used techniques for gold extraction and are, -in fact, used almost exclusively in U.S. heap leaching operations. Because of the efficiency and ease of use of these two methods, it is extremely likely they will continue to be quite prevalent within the gold mining industry in years to come. The remainder of this chapter includes information on the history of the two processes, descriptions of the actual processes, criteria to consider in selecting a recovery process, and commercial design and construction considerations for both of the gold recovery methods. As with other chapters in this book, some fairly technical information is presented for the benefit of those readers needing a greater level of detail. However, the overall intent of the chapter is to provide an overview of the processes likely to be used in gold extraction, thus giving the reader a firm basis for more technical research into the topic, should this be needed. 8.1.1 History of Zinc Cementation During the late 18901s, zinc cementation was introduced for the precipitation of gold and silver from cyanide solutions. This occurred at about the same time as the introduction of the cyanidation process, the history of which is recapped in Chapter 1. The initial cementation process involved introduction of a gold-bearing cyanide solution onto a bed of zinc shavings. It proved to be quite inefficient because the reaction rate was very slow. The zinc quickly became "passive", inhibiting further gold deposition. Shortly after this first introduction, zinc precipitation was improved by adding a lead salt (usually lead nitrate) to the zinc. This allowed a zinc-lead couple to form on the surface of the shavings, eliminating passivation of zinc surfaces and thereby allowing continued deposition of gold. The purpose of grouting is to modify the permeability and strength characteristics of the subsoil in such a way that the planned structure can be efficiently constructed at a given location. This technique, which originally underwent considerable development in the field of dams construction is constantly evolving and it becomes more and more important in urban zones of intensive underground development for projects such as transport tunnels, stations, car parks, ect. Grouting becomes more and more indispensable whatever the natural characteristics of that subsoil ; such is the case particularly when the planned work runs through cohesionless granular soils, usually water-bearing such as alluvium, sands, disturbed ground, fill material, etc. The selection of the grouting method and the extent of treatment required at depends on two fundamental factors. 1º) nature and behaviour of subsoil to be treated. There is no need to stress the necessary of a good knowledge of geotechnical, hydrological and chemical characteristics of the ground to be treated. At the present time the specialists in these fields have available numerous methods of analysis, either laboratory or field tests, which enable to evolve a suitable treatment.

Forecasting mined grade variability from exploration information is a challenging task in mine planning. For effective planning of activities, such as workplace scheduling, ore grade quality control, etc., development of realistic numerical simulation models of in situ variability from exploration information is an essential first step. Geostatistical conditional simulation (GCS) is one of the well known methods to develop such simulations. Recently, stochastic fractal models based on the assumptions of scale-invariance and self-similarity have been used for developing simulations of several natural phenomena. It has been suggested that these models might permit the generation of short-scale variability information from exploration data with greater fidelity when the data satisfies the attendant assumptions. In this paper, stochastic fractal models are reviewed, and their relationship to geostatistical variogram models is examined. A comparison of the two simulation techniques has been performed using coal sulfur data from a mined-out coal property. The results of this comparative analysis are also presented in the paper.

INTRODUCTION The basic premise of the ideas presented in this paper are as follows: Engineers believe that "theoretically" it will work. Operators ask what they must do to make it work. And, people can screw it up. r Today the challenges conf onted during the engineering, startup and operation of mines are becoming more complex. As mining and processing professionals, we are called upon to trav­el all over the world, are subjected to a wide variety of climates and must deal with a numerous cultures and people. Historically, for the majority of the people working in the mining industry, the primary challenges related to projects have focused on the differing perspectives of the disciplines involved. For example, geologists focus on resources and reserves, mining engineers relate to tons or tonnes, metallurgists count ounces or pounds or kilograms of product, mechanics emphasize availabil­ity, human resources personnel deal with absentee rates and turnover and accountants watch the bottom line ($$'s). As the world has become "smaller" and the mining industry has become more globalized, the puzzle is becoming increasingly difficult. Even the most experienced in the crowd of mining profes­sionals are oftentimes surprised by the types of problems that are encountered. Try as we may, we cannot anticipate the complex­ity of dealing with the human side of an operation.

INTRODUCTION Although sampling techniques used by the mineral industry continue to improve, sampling is still an area which is often neglected. Frequently, sampling and sample preparation requirements are left to personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of sampling. Consequently, plant evaluations are often based on seriously biased samples, leading to mass balance problems and incorrect assessments of plant performance. The basic rule for correct sampling is that each particle of ore or concentrate must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. If this is not the case, bias is easily introduced and the sample is not representative. For example, when ore is travelling on a conveyor belt, the lumps may come to the surface. Consequently, a grab sample taken from the top layers only will contain a greater proportion of lumps, i.e., the sample is biased. There seems little point in making major investments in precise analytical equipment, if the sample provided to the analytical laboratory is not representative in the first place. This paper describes the sources of plant sampling errors, reviews the methods of estimating their variance, presents some worked examples, and provides some practical advice for reducing sampling errors and their variance. SAMPLING BASICS It is generally accepted that the discharge point of an ore or concentrate stream is the most suitable sampling location. The stream can be intersected at regular intervals, and representative samples, referred to as increments, can be obtained by taking a complete cross-section of the ore stream. On the other hand, sampling devices that take part of the stream on an intermittent or continuous basis, e.g., a bleed from a pipe, may introduce serious bias, and should be avoided at all cost. Increments may be taken at completely random times or tonnages during the sampling operation, in which case it is called "random sampling". However, as shown below, random sampling results in the largest sampling variance, so it is preferable to divide the ore or concentrate stream up into strata of equal time or mass and take one increment from each stratum. This operation is called stratified sampling and may be either systematic sampling, in which increments are taken at the same point in each stratum, or stratified random sampling in which the increments are taken at random within each stratum. Systematic sampling results in the smallest sampling variance, provided periodic variations in quality or quantity are not present which may coincide with, or approximate to, any multiples of the proposed sampling interval. In such cases, it is strongly recommended that stratified random sampling within fixed time or mass intervals be carried out.

The role of bacterial oxidation in the mining industry is becoming more widely accepted. Western Australia has accepted the technology as a pretreatment for refractory gold concentrates more readily than most. The third of such plants has been completed at the Y ouanmi Gold Mine. This is situated approxi­mately 500 kilometres north east of Perth, in the Yilgarn mineral field. Y ouanmi concentrates are produced from underground ore and contain arsenopyrite and pyrite as the main sulphide miner­als. Refractory gold from this deposit is generally associated with the arsenopyrite portion of the material. Gold Mines of Australia Ltd ("GMA") initiated pilot scale testing at the BacTech premises in November 1993. The decision by GMA to use BacTech's technology was announced in February 1994. Design and construction commenced at this time. Bacterial growth on site was initiated in July 1994 and continuous opera­tion began in the October. Concentrate was added at 0.5 tonnes per hour and this has increased to 1 tonne per hour.

In order to drive tunnels with low overburden in town regions, it is necessary to give a quantitative prognosis for the deformation of the underground as well as of the tunnel-lining and of its stability. These problems and their solutions are illustrated by the works for a two-track-railway-tunnel in Bochum (Ruhrdistrict). In this case the most important problems consisted in passing below buildings in a vertical distance to the fundamentals of only 3.20 m and a railway earthdam with rapid train traffic in a distance of 4 m under the dam. The results of measurements from other comparable tunnels and finite-element-computations were used to prognose the settlements on the surface and in the ground, their distributions and their development in time. To obtain these values at the site, a special system of tunnel driving was executed. The tunnel was excavated with the newest type of tunneling-machine from DEMAG, cutting an inclined front, immediately followed by a special temporary support of shotcrete and inclined steel-ribs. By using theoretical and empirical methods to assess the behavior of the tunnel and underground and by executing an optimal driving system in technical as well as economical aspects, the expected behavior, expressed in quantitative values, was almost equivalent to those received by control measurements.

Most of the siliceous rocks of the Arkansas Novaculite are novaculite, but they also include some chert, siliceous shale and, rarely, sandstone. Novaculite is defined as a homogeneous mostly white or light-colored rock, translucent on thin edges, with a dull to waxy Juster, and comprised almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The most plausible theory of origin for novaculite is that primary silica from submarine volcanism was picked up by organisms and deposited as amorphous silica, which was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz (novaculite) through diagenesis. The Arkansas Novaculite crops out over an east-west distance of 200 miles in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division, almost entirely massive light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive calcareous novaculite. The Lower Division and most of the Middle Division are Devonian in age, and the remainder of the Middle Division and all of the Upper Division are Mississippian. The massive novaculites of the Upper and Lower Division attain their maximum development along the southern and central outcrop belts of the formation in Arkansas, and it is these rocks that are the source of current silica production. The calcareous novaculite of the Upper Division weathers readily to a light-colored, porous, less brittle rock, and in places to tripoli deposits. Currently tripoli is mined from a single deposit near. Hot Springs, Arkansas, and the rock is processed for highly specialized filler and abrasive applications. In the vicinity of Hot Springs, Arkansas, certain novaculite layers from the Lower Division with unique textural characteristics are quarried and processed into whetstones. Several small quarries produce this rock for two local and one out-of-state whetstone-fabricating plants. Chemical analyses of composite samples of novaculite from both the Upper and Lower Divisions taken at widely separated localities average 99 percent SiOz indicating a substantial resource of high-silica rock.

Basement rocks in southern Oklahoma are divided into two groups. One group is the Lower Cambrian Wichita Igneous Province, a diverse igneous suite that crops out in the western Arbuckle Mountains and in the Wichita Mountains. These largely bimodal igneous rocks were emplaced in an intracratonic-rift environment. The other group, the older, is a set of Precambrian rocks of the Eastern Arbuckle Province, yielding ages between 1,350 and 1,400 Ma, exposed in the core of the eastern Arbuckle Mountains. These are deeply eroded mesozonal granitic rocks and associated granitic gneisses cut by numerous dikes ranging in composition from diabase to rhyolite. The southern Oklahoma igneous rocks have long been utilized mostly as dimension and crushed stone. Most of the early quarries were in granite of various red hues for monuments and facing stones. Large crushed-stone quarries are now exploiting both granite and rhyolite, which is used chiefly as aggregate and railroad ballast. The exposed basement rocks in Oklahoma represent an underdeveloped and accessible resource.

No one involved in the contruction business wants litigation, except maybe some lawyers. Contractors rarely resort to litigation unless they have sustained econmic wounds that are serious or mortal. The major cause of serious contractor losses occur because of sub-surface conditions which cannot be defined with certainty in any practicable way except as shown during construction and prove during construction to be substantially worse and more expensive to cope with than anticipated during bidding. Building, Dam and Highway contractors are generally close in their estimates of cost after they get foundations excavated and are building above ground. Their main risk in bidding is the cost of getting out of the ground compared to their estimate. So maybe 10%, 20% or even 30% of their project represent high risk underground work. The tunneling and underground contractor is dealing with high risk work for virtually 100% of his project. He appreciates this risk and is willing to assume it up to a bearable limit. His costs are highly sensitive to relatively small variations of the ground in underground work. His work is unique in other respects. As contrasted with other types of construction where loads develop as construction progresses and do not reach ultimate until the project becomes operative, tunnel and underground construction requires the immediate structural support of ultimate loads that are there when he digs or very soon thereafter. Joints may be taken into account when using numerical modeling as an aid to mine design by embedding joints in the model. When using the popular finite element method, say UT3PC, a pre-analysis step is necessary, Step 0. This step is for the computation of equivalent properties of a representative elementary volume of jointed rock (REV) in the model. This Step 0 is taken before Steps 1, 2 and 3 for specification of a rock properties file, generation of the mesh, and model analysis are taken. A brief explanation of equivalent properties and several examples aid in explaining the details of Step 0. Focus is on procedures, input files, and output to show ease of computation. Theoretical details are relegated to references (e.g. Pariseau 2022). Comparisons of safety factor distributions about example mine excavations with direct scaling from mine observations then offer some insights concerning equivalent properties, especially strengths.

Comminution of various materials can be achieved in grinding equipment by nipping, impact, attrition, or a combination of these actions. Pna mills also known as edgerunners, chasers, and mullers-are classified as a nipping machine. The essential features of this type of grinding machine are rollers or mullers that turn on a horizontal axis while rating on the bed of material in the pan. Ploughs are used to direct the unground material to the center of the pan. Grinding may be accomplished wet or dry. Aritres, Chilean mills, and Huntington mills are types of pan mills. Ring roll and ring Ml mills, another type of nipping machine, were developed for grinding smaller particles of intermediate hardness to product sizes of about 100 pm. They were designed to attempt to reduce the cost of similar size reduction in ball mills and have been widely used to pulverize coal for power-plant facilities. Impact Machines Grinding machines that can be classified as impact mills include: hammer, cage, centrifugal, vibratory, pin, and stamp mills. The distinctive feature of an impact mill is that it has a fast-moving part that transfers some of its kinetic energy to the material particles by direct contact so that internal stresses are created in the particles. The Reitz Disintegrator is an example of an impact mill. It has rigidly mounted hammers attached to a vertical shaft that rotates in close proximity to horizontally mounted screens.
