The study of soft soil (wastes above the rock bed) an issue of great importance in civil engineering, is usually addressed by drilling boreholes. This method is rather expensive and time-consuming and although the information obtained is usually accurate, on the other hand it is much localized. Recently published researches have demonstrated the ability of the combination of geophysical exploration methods to estimate the thickness of deposited wastes, which provides the layered structure of the study area and certain, method depended, mechanical parameters as well. By theory, the frequency of resonance of an upper layer is a function of its thickness and the average shear velocity in it. Furthermore, the application of H/V spectral ratios of micro-tremors is a fast, straight forward and cost effective methodology, yielding the determination of the main resonant frequency of the soil. Based on this framework, 20 microtremor measurements have been carried out in a Landfill in Heraklion-Crete. Some of these measurements were deliberately close to drilled sites, where the basement had been reached. Three electrical resistivity tomographies were also used, in order to define the landfill structure such as, thickness, determination of different wastes distribution in the study area and other parameters. In addition, estimation of predictive Vs using empirical relationship between shear velocity and penetration resistance (SPT?s) were also conducted. Knowing the thickness and the resonant frequency, we estimated the shear (Vs) velocity of the waste cover. The final Vs model was confirmed using the results from the Vs-SPT correlation. The combinative implementation of the above mentioned geophysical and geotechnical methods have successfully defined geometrical and geotechnical/geophysical characteristics of the area under investigation in a fast and cost effective way.

The new generation of computer environment provides mineral processing plants with convenient tools to store and retrieve or to analyze on-line process variable values as given along time by the various sensors installed in the plant. The paper describes the application of classical tools, such as time series analysis, to retrieve the hidden information contained is such data. The concepts used in single signal processing (autocorrelogram, power spectrum, ARIMA descriptors) and multi-signal processing (cross-correlogram, cross-spectrum) are briefly reviewed. Some examples are given to illustrate their application (sampling, data filtering, process behaviour prediction, process evaluation, data synchronisation). Examples are taken from mixing, flotation and leaching processes.

Fine-coal screening can be one of the most critical operations in a modern coal-cleaning plant. The yield and quality of clean coal produced in fine-coal circuits is controlled as much by how efficiently 0.15 mm (100 mesh) particles are sized as on the performance traits of the fine-coal cleaning device itself. In addition, the increased interest in effective fine-coal sizing operations indicates that many operators have also discovered its importance in affecting the quality and yield of clean coal produced in fine-coal circuits. This paper describes the three most prevalently used fine-coal screening technologies and discusses their sizing mechanism, performance, and application.

The "Gold" chapter of my adventures did not start with a rush. On May 14, 193 1, Thayer Lindsley wired me asking if I could examine the Pioneer mine in British Columbia right away. I replied, "Yes," but I had never heard of the Pioneer and, although many others were asking about gold during the Depression, none were doing anything about it. A little later another wire asked me to meet Gen. A.D. McRae in Vancouver in a couple of days. This was the start of 20 years of intermittent examinations for Lindsley. I took the train to Seattle and the night boat to Vancouver where I met Gen. McRae and his associate Victor Spencer. McRae had been one of the Canadian leaders during World War I and, for his services, he had been made a Canadian senator, a lifetime job. Col. Spencer was proprietor of a big store in Vancouver, and almost as distinguished. A seaplane was waiting for us in the harbor, to be piloted by Major McLaren, one of the leading Canadian flyers during the war. He flew us up the long fjord of Howe Sound and then on north along the route of the provincial-owned Pacific Great Eastern Railway past jagged snow-clad peaks to the village of Shalalth on Seton Lake. A rental car run by Curley Evans, a noted British Columbia character, was waiting for us in Shalalth and it took us for 50 miles over one of the steepest and crookedest roads I had ever seen. At the end of the road the Pioneer camp was set in a deep canyon in the Coast Range. Dave Sloan, another British Columbia character, was waiting for us and he immediately took me underground, at nine in the evening, to see the Pioneer ore. The ore body was then a small one but it was running over an ounce of gold per ton. The name Dave Sloan became synonymous with Pioneer. McRae and Spencer told me the history of Sloan arid the Pioneer on the way to the mine. The rich surface ore had first been discovered about 1879. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the leaching of phosphate values from Florida phosphatic clay wastes using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the leaching agent and methanol as the solvent. Acid-alcohol leaching studies were done using research-grade apatite to investigate potential causes of flow extractions. It was found that a barrier layer formed on the surface of the apatite. Initial discovery of the barrier layer was made by analyzing pure apatite samples before and after leaching using an optical microscope. Subsequent Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analyses proved the coating was calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4•1/2H2O) and that unreacted apatite existed beneath the coating. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs depict the CaSO4• 1 /2H20 morphology as long slender crystals adhering to the apatite surface. It was also shown that grinding the leached tailings and leaching again in the H2SO4-methanol system resulted in additional phosphate extraction.

INTRODUCTION The Soudan 2 Cavern was completed in 1986 as a physics research laboratory located 713 m below ground in northern Minnesota. A paper in the 1985 RETC proceedings presented the background and planned usage for the cavern, site investigation and rock conditions, contract documents, and a bid summary. This is a follow-up paper describing construction of the cavern. The Soudan 2 excavation, 71.8 m long by 13.9 m wide by 11.6 m high, was excavated by drill and blast methods and mucked by crawler tractor and mine hoist. The excavation sequence consisted of twin top-heading pilot tunnels followed by removal of the top heading pillar and finally the bench. Various blasting designs were used to achieve adequate breakage and acceptable levels of blast damage control at the cavern perimeter. The geologic conditions exposed in the cavern, and the support needs of the rock encountered, are compared to the conditions interpreted from the site investigation. The influence of specific geologic features on cavern performance will be described. Initial support and final lining consisted of full length grouted rockbolts and reinforced and plain shotcrete. Trials were conducted with steel-fiber reinforced shotcrete and microsilica additives. Beneficiation tests were conducted on samples from three ore zones in the Los Monos, Navay orebody in Táchira State, Venezuela as part of an overall feasibility study. The scope of work included ore sample characterization, flowsheet development, and optimization of beneficiation variables on a bench scale followed by confirmation on a pilot plant scale. Phosphate in the ore samples occurred primarily as francolite and was associated with quartz, kaolinite, and feldspar. Liberation of the phosphate began at 589 microns (28 mesh) for the main ore zone sample and at 295 microns (48 mesh) for the lower-grade ore zone samples. Development tests on simulated mining composites demonstrated that the samples responded well to 589 micron (28 mesh) grinding, two stages of high intensity scrubbing, conditioning at high % solids with caustic and equal amounts of tall oil and fuel oil, and separate coarse and fine flotation circuits with one stage of roughing and two stages of cleaning (reflotation). Concentrates in the range of 31.5-34% P205 with recoveries from 64-70% were obtained from the mining composites. Product quality for all concentrates in the range of 31.5 % P205 was good; 1.40 CaO/P205 and 0.04-0.05 minor element ratios. Confirmation testing in a continuous pilot plant produced results similar to those achieved in the laboratory.

Continuing its objective of sharing new ideas, methods, theory, and engineering developments, more than 550 members of the underground fraternity gathered in New York City for the 1985 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). Since the first meeting in 1972, RETC’S aim has been to lay a foundation of tunneling experience on which the industry could expand and develop over the years. The RETC is jointly sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the American Society of Civil Engineers, in cooperation with the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Engineering Institute of Canada. The 17 sessions included 72 papers that explored up-to-date practices in the mining and civil engineering fields. Session topics ranged from geotechnical and seismic design, through design, construction, and support of underground openings, to ground water control in shafts and mine openings. Case histories of tunnel boring machines and large diameter tunnel and underground openings were also reviewed. All the papers presented at the three-day conference are valuable additions to improving the state of rapid excavation. A few sessions, however, are particularly noteworthy as they are geared to the mining industry. The two volume proceedings of the entire conference are available from SME. (See ad on page 1003).

Heterogeneity and discontinuity significantly affect rockmass strength. Past studies have largely used arbitrary scaling approaches to produce rockmass strength from laboratory rock tests. This paper proposes a stochastic approach to produce rockmass strength from laboratory rock tests. Based on the laboratory data, MATLAB with an extreme value stochastic model generated a database for each physico-mechanical property of the rock. Then finite-difference software FLAC2D simulated laboratory-sized rock specimens. Random material properties in MATLAB were generated using the grids developed in the numerical model. The random properties were then applied to the final FLAC2D model. Model runs simulated the approach performed in the laboratory. The results from the model indicate that a stochastic approach produced compressive strengths that were lower than those from the deterministic approach. Failure modes for each specimen were different from those observed in the laboratory. In addition, random density also influenced the failure mode, highlighting the importance of stochastic analysis in rocks.

Five coals blended at a Midwestern United States power station were subjected to detailed analysis of their Hardgrove grindability. The coals, representing four distinct coal beds, are a low-sulfur, high-volatile A bituminous Upper Elkhorn No. 3 coal (Pike County, Kentucky); a medium-sulfur, high-volatile A bituminous Pittsburgh coal (southwestern Pennsylvania); a low-sulfur, subbituminous coal from the northern Powder River Basin (Montana); and two low-sulfur, subbituminous Wyodak coals from two different mines located in the eastern Powder River Basin (Campbell County, Wyoming). All samples that were processed in the Hardgrove grindability tests were also analyzed for their maceral and microlithotype content. The high-vitrinite Pittsburgh coal and the relatively petrographically complex Upper Elkhorn No. 3 coal exhibited different grindability behavior. The petrographic compositions of the Pittsburgh raw feed, the 16 x 30-mesh fraction (HG! test fraction) and the -30-mesh fraction (HGI test reject) are similar, suggesting that the HGI test fraction typifies the whole feed. The eastern Kentucky test sample is not as representative of the whole feed, with the HGI test fraction having lower vitrinite amounts than the rejected -30-mesh fraction. The Powder River Basin coals are high in vitrinite content and show behavior similar to the Pittsburgh coal.

he Broken Aro coal mine is located at the Woodbury Wildlife Preserve 11 km (7 miles) west of Coshocton, OH on State Route 541. Underground min¬ing at the 16-hm2 (40-acre) site took place during the 1910s. During the past five years, surface mining has occurred along the western and northern perimeters of the underground region. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), R&F Coal and American Electric Power (AEP) are involved in a project to remine the abandoned underground complex. The program also includes installing a mine seal made of fixated flue gas desulfurization (FGD) material. Previous mining activity in this area has resulted in an acid mine drainage (AMD) problem on portions of the reserve. In particular, a prominent AMD source is present in the Simmons Run drainage. The project goal is to eliminate or reduce the AMD that is discharging into the watershed. It was initially hoped that the Simmons Run drainage area could be economically mined. Accordingly, this area was included in the mine permit. However, experience with other previously mined areas on this reserve showed that the old mine workings were more extensive than originally thought. Old mine workings present several problems. The most significant are reduced coal recovery, poor coal quality and AMD liability. All of these problems increase mining costs. And the more extensive the old workings, the more significant the increase in cost. Based on R&F's experience with old mine workings in this area, it was decided that economic recovery of the Simmons Run drainage reserve was not possible. As a result, R&F excluded the Simmons Run drainage area from its early mine plans. Some time after it was decided not to affect the Simmons Run drainage area, R&F and ODNR's Division of Mining and Reclamation discussed the possibility of removing this area from the permit and attempting to correct the AMD problem as an Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) project. Specifically, the discussion centered around mining through a portion of the old mine workings to expose the mine openings in the highwall. Once exposed, the mine openings would be sealed using FGD material from the nearby Conesville power plant operated by AEP. In addition, there was interest in reclaiming the old tipple and associated gob pile located adjacent to Coshocton County Road 17 on the opposite side of Simmons Run. R&F attempted to eliminate the AMD problem by sealing the mine openings with FGD material. Once the seals were installed, they were covered with overburden. Monitoring wells were installed to determine the effectiveness of the seal and the inundation progress in the old mine workings as well as monitoring the quality of ground water. The project was jointly funded by revenue from the sale of the coal recovered during the project and AML funds. The FGD seal is expected to cause well water levels to increase above preseal elevations. However, the additional head pressure due to increased water depths in the underground mine may cause seepage through the bottom of the mine or out through the perimeter. The in¬creased water depth in the underground mine is expected to cause lower oxygen concentrations in the underground mine water. Since acidity is produced by oxidation of iron pyrites, less oxygen should result in better quality water. Monitoring wells will be installed before seal installation so that pre- and postseal water levels and well water quality can be determined. Surface sampling locations will be identified. These will be monitored before and after seal placement.

With obvious signs of deterioration, the double track, historically registered Bergen Tunnels as part of the commuter rail system in New Jersey waited for rehabilitation for a long time. Serious water in filtration not only caused operational and safety hazards for the electrified rail line but also deteriorated and structurally compromised the tunnel lining. An innovative rehabilitation program was developed to enlarge the tunnel and to provide a new waterproofing system and final lining. For the rock excavation and support New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) principles were utilized, while water tightness was achieved by installing a PVC membrane waterproofing system followed by a reinforced cast-in-place final lining. Experienced on-site supervision generated additional savings during construction by streamlining support elements based on geologic conditions encountered.

"Above ground, elevated belt conveyors that span more than 200 m (656 ft) between support points can cross valleys, rivers, forests and buildings with a minimal footprint. The cable bridge conveyor (CBC) is a new type of suspension bridge based belt conveyor system that has long spans between support points. It combines a typical belt conveyor and an improved simple suspension bridge to form a conveyor bridge. The improved simple suspension bridge places a widened bridge deck directly on suspended cables, without the need for high truss towers. The benefits include reduced cost and increase aerodynamic stability compared to conventional suspension bridges. The CBC’s compatibility with current belt conveyors allows versatility in application.A belt conveyor is a ubiquitous material handling system. Conveyors can be placed directly on ground or elevated above ground by support structures. Considerations of cost, design, environment, civil work, safety and process requirements are all factors in choosing the ground-based or elevated conveyors (Zhang, 2014). The ground-based conveyor has the lowest structural cost when the conveyor is placed on an existing road. Maintenance access is easy and straightforward. Compared to the groundbased conveyor, the elevated conveyor can cross existing buildings and structures, give passage to traffic beneath the conveyor, has a smaller footprint and requires less civil work to pass mountainous areas. The drawback of the elevated conveyor is higher structural cost, which can be compared with savings in civil work and other benefits. Conventional elevated conveyors are supported by rigid truss-type structures, with a typical span of 15 to 25 m (50 to 82 ft) between concrete support bents or steel trestles. Triangular truss, using steel pipes instead of hot rolled steel sections, is more efficient. The typical span of a triangular truss-supported conveyor is around 30 to 40 m (100 to 130 ft), while the weight is about 10 percent less than conventional box truss with a shorter span (Jennings, 2013).Long-span elevated structures based on suspension bridge is another step forward in increasing the distance between support bents, reaching 100 to 400 m (330 to 1,312 ft) and beyond. The wide distance between the support points of an elevated conveyor offers unique benefits. The conveyor can cross rivers, valleys, highways, forests and other obstacles with minimal footprint and reduced civil work. The versatility from long-span conveyors makes bulk material transportation over previously impossible terrains now a feasible option."

Over a period of eight years (1989 through 1997) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, AK, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a nonevaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). The following three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No. 4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10 to 20 min of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down, and more than 100 min of additional residence time is required to produce percentage increases equivalent to what was achieved in the first 10 to 20 min. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove gindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275°C to 325°C (525°F to 61 5 OF) range.

To increase its product competitiveness in the foreign market, Samarco Mineracão S/A has developed, at its pilot plant, high-MgO pellets for performing direct reduction simulation tests. Additives, such as dolomitic lime and magnesite, were used for increasing the pellet MgO content. Comparative direct-reduction simulation tests were conducted in Samarco and foreign laboratories. The results show that direct-reduction pellets with satisfactory metallurgical properties can be produced and successfully processed at increased temperatures in direct reduction furnaces.

Asbestos is a generic term for industrially useful fibers recovered from exploitable deposits of the asbestiform varieties of five silicate minerals: chrysotile, anthophyl-lite, actinolite-tremolite, cummingtorute-grunerite, and rie-beekite. Asbestos and asbestiform fibers of some other minerals are known to be carcinogenic. Minerals crystallized in the asbestiform habit-are characterized by unique properties (morphology, strength and flexibility, physical and chemical durability, and defect-free surface structures). The key to the unusual properties, and health effects, of asbestiform fibers appears to be in their unusual surface structure. In contrast, non-asbestiform crystals of the same minerals, including the five so called asbestos minerals, do not have these properties and are not carcinogenic.

Dewatering wells producing iron-rich water experience rapid declines in yield and drawdown due to the formation of ferric (Fe3+) hydroxide deposits in well screens, pump intakes and riser pipes. Precipitation is caused by a combination of dewatering-promoted iron oxidation and iron oxidizing bacteria. Physical and chemical well rehabilitation techniques, as well as alternative well-construction and well development techniques, were evaluated in this study. The addition of acid downhole feed systems to dewatering wells that are prone to iron encrustation can, in many cases, prolong their operational lives up to 500% that of unacidified wells.

It is difficult to decide who most deserves credit for discovery of a mining district that has produced over 19.8 Mg (7,000,000 fine oz) of gold and still contains a large reserve of low grade ore. Fred Culver may have made the first discovery. In the summer of 1867, the ship's log of the Hudson's Bay Co.'s steamer Otter stated that Fred Culver had been found nearly lifeless from wounds, without provisions, but with some 2.3 kg (80 oz) of rough, placer gold in the bottom of his canoe; he told of finding a rich creek and an attack by Indians that caused the death of his two companions. The place of rescue was about 24 km (15 miles) southeast from the present site of Juneau. Possibly John Muir, the hero of modem environmentalists, should be given important credit. In 1879 he reported finding mineralization along what later became to be known as the Juneau Gold Belt, and it was his report that induced the cantankerous German mining engineer, George Pilz, to grub- stake some of the prospectors who had drifted into Sitka from the declining gold placers of Cassiar, British Columbia. Pilz also offered rewards to Indians who might report gold discoveries.

Chemical and electrochemical studies were performed during bioleaching of cobaltite concentrate with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The two principal minerals present in the concentrate were pyrite and cobaltite (CoAsS). During chemical studies, the effect of pH on dissolution rates was examined under uncontrolled and pH-controlled conditions. It was found that in the pH range 1.5-3.0 there was no pH effect if the initial pH was not controlled (maintained). When the initial pH was controlled, the leaching of Co, As, and Fe depended strongly on pH. Electrochemical studies were performed by using cyclic voltammetry and constant potential techniques. A sequential reaction mechanism was proposed for dissolution of cobaltite.

The world's largest hydraulic excavator was recently introduced at Syncrude's North Mine at Fort McMurray, Alberta, in Canada. O&K's 826t (910-st) behemoth RH400, with a 42-m3 (55-cu yd) bucket, is capable of loading 72.5 t (80 st) in one pass. Syncrude's Alberta operation is the nation's largest single source of crude oil. It is also the world's largest producer of oil from oil sands. Syncrude produces 205,000 bbl/day, expects to increase production to 225,000 bbl/day by 1999 and to 320,000 bbl/day by 2005. That translates to 73.5 million bbl of Syncrude Sweet Blend (SSB) produced in 1996, 82 million bbl in 1999 and 114 million bbl in 2005. The North Mine is a new development that will replace the current East Mine, to be depleted of oil sand by the end of 1999. The North Mine will feature hydrotransport, a new and unique method of transporting oil sand from the pit to the process plant. Oil sand from the truck-and-shovel operation will be processed through a double-roll crusher and placed in a cyclofeeder where it mixes with hot water. The material is then screened and transported by pipeline to the extraction plant. Hydrotransport will replace conventional conveyor transport for moving raw product from the pit. Mine development will also use two 290-t (320-st) haul trucks to compliment the fleet of existing 218-t (240-st) trucks.
