According to the 2010-2019 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident report database, 91% of reported ground control accidents in U.S. longwall mines were caused by roof instability. Gateroads are subject to significant changes in loading conditions from the development to the longwall abutment loading phases. When combined with thinly bedded shale roof, found in many U.S. longwall coal mines, the design of efficient roof support becomes challenging. In previous work, the Bonded Block Method (BBM) modeling of roof by UDEC was validated against field extensometer measurements in a longwall gateroad entry roof at a 180-m depth of cover. The BBM was shown as capable of capturing delamination and buckling of shale roof, one of the main roof instability mechanisms in longwall mines. This paper presents the recent findings on the roof-support interaction using BBM models of the same longwall entry. The effects of cable bolts, roof bolt density, and strap support on potential roof instability are studied. These types of studies are difficult and costly to conduct in an operating mine. Results show how the contribution of bolts, straps, and cable bolts can be quantified using the BBM models. The study demonstrates the potential for BBM numerical models to help understand the complex roof and support system interactions and to assist with optimizing gateroad support systems.

The four papers in this session illustrate two different directions in which computer graphics seem to be developing. The first of these is in the handling and storage of geological information. The increasing use of micro-computers with limited storage facilities has seen a concomitant increase in the need to store geological data in as efficient a form as possible. It has also seen a recognition of the particular types of data which are used in a geological or mining analysis. Unlike many other fields, observations of drill cores, geological interpretations, structure and many other variables require storage in a readily accessible form. The authors of two papers in this session deal directly with Geological Information Systems. They discuss the setup, the specification of such systems, and the practical uses of the systems once in operation.

An electron optical and microprobe study was made to determine the physical and chemical nature of the silica minerals that occur as natural impurities in bentonite and montmorillonitic fuller&apos;s earth clay products (both granular and powder) and that occur in <10-µm dusts from plants that process these products. The purpose of the study was to determine if discrete "free" silica minerals, such as quartz, could be observed using SEM and EDS methods. No “free" silica minerals could be observed in the SEM images of the granular and powdered products, either among or on the surfaces of the particles. Also, no “free" silica could be identified by either SEM or EDS analyses of the dusts, even though quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that trace amounts of quartz occurred in all samples. It was determined that these quartz and other silica minerals were encapsulated or coated by montmorillonite. Vigorous washing, however, removed some of the clay coatings, so that small amounts of silica minerals could be seen by SEM and EDS analysis. It was found that all primary crystalline quartz grains in the bentonites have diagenetic overgrowths consisting of a mixture of montmorillonite, opaline silica and possibly microcrystalline quartz. Detrital quartz grains in the fuller&apos;s earth have thin diagenetic overgrowths of opaline silica, also containing montmorillonite. The clay encapsulation of the silica minerals in the products studied, as well as in the potentially respirable (<10-µm) dust produced during manufacturing of bentonite and montmorillonitic fuller&apos;s earth clay products, is considered to be an important factor influencing the potential health effects (e.g.. silicosis) of the contained silica. Even if clay dust containing silica should be inhaled, the montmorillonite encapsulating the quartz and other silica minerals would prevent direct contact of the silica with lung tissue. The clay encapsulation of quartz, as well as the highly hydroscopic nature of montmorillonite, may explain why not a single confirmed case of silicosis has ever been reported among plant workers in more than 65 years of production.

THE UNIT process of adsorption involves two steps: 1) Loading of the adsorbent. 2) Recovery of metal values from the adsorbent. Charcoal is the adsorbent commonly used in extractive metallurgy. The discovery of the adsorptive power of charcoal from solutions is generally accredited to Lowitz (1785), who observed that several dissolved organic substances were precipitated on charcoal. Graham was the first to demonstrate that inorganic substances were also adsorbed on charcoal. In 1830, he reported that iodine dissolved in KI solution was adsorbed on charcoal. In order to investigate the design parameters of a future longwall in a thick coal seam a numerical model of gas emission from the goaf area was developed. A Longwall goaf was modelled as a collection of different size coal blocks. For each coal block the partial differential equation of gas flow was independently solved. In developing the flow equations, both pressure-driven and diffusion driven gas flow regimes were considered. The total gas emission rate was calculated by integrating the gas release from each individual coal block over the whole goaf area. The main output of the computer program are gas flowrate from goaf and residual content of caved coal in the goaf as a function of distance from the face. The model was applied to a longwall face driven in a thick seam where large volumes of coal in the roof were to be left behind the face. The gas contained in the coal was mainly CO, with a high desorption rate. Simulations were under- taken to quantify the effect of size of the caved coal on the flowrate from the goaf. The flow properties of coal, such as diffusivity, permeability and coal swelling due to gas adsorption, were directly measured on coal samples from the seam.

Feeder-Breakers were an unknown but much needed piece of machinery when U. S. underground coal mines started converting to more efficient belt haulage of the R.O.M. coal as compared to conventional methods that the 1950&apos;s offered. These simple electromechanical machines offered efficiencies in three areas: (1) they contained a surge hopper that allowed a "load&apos; of coal to be dumped without delay; (2) this material was fed horizontally by a drag chain conveyor into a rotating carbide pick breaker that broke all oversize material into a beltable size, and (3) it fed this broken material onto the belt conveyor at a rate conducive to its design. Since its introduction, the Feeder-Breaker has evolved from that first low capacity, low breaking force machine to today&apos;s model capable of breaking materials up to 5 MOHS in hardness and having throughput capabilities exceeding 3,000 TPH with availability in the 90 percentiles.

The paper gives a short resumé of the findings of the joint US - Swedish "Mechanical Boring (MB) or Drill and Blast Tunneling (DB) ? Workshop" in Stockholm December 1976. New developments and trends in both MB and DB techniques in Europe since 1976 are described, and information is given on some interesting new projects. Differences in contracting principles between the US and Europe lead to different practices for preinvestigations, design, excavation and arbitration and legal affairs. It is shown that this often leads to a higher cost in the US than in Europe for similar excavation jobs. A typical US tunnel job also has more men on the site than a similar job in Europe. This adds to the cost difference and is only partly balanced by a slightly higher rate of excavation in the US. A comparison is made between two quantitative methods of predicting MB penetration rates. These are in reasonable agreement. A probable future development in machine design is an increase in cutter load towards perhaps 25 tons per disc where the tunnel diameter is large enough to house the machine size dictated by the size of the very large electric motors required. Recent European developments in drill and blast technique include improved methods for cautious blasting, precision hydraulic drilling of small diameter holes, and non-electric interval blasting techniques. These developments still keep the drill and blast method ahead of mechanical boring costwise for tunnels in igneous rock whereas for most sedimentary materials mechanical boring has a lead, particularly for long tunnels.

The treatment of Mercur's refractory ores has been well published; however, the processing of the remaining semi-refractory or oxide ores has not been discussed. Although ore control at Mercur is efficient, refractory vestiges are left with the mill-feed, oxide ores. Also, these ores as mined are not necessarily completely oxidized at Mercur and should be termed semi-refractory ores. This paper will discuss those steps taken at Mercur to enhance the recovery of gold from partially oxidized ores at Mercur. The Mercur mill is a conventional SAG/ball mill grinding circuit feeding a GIL plant. The circuit has been well published and will not be further reviewed.

This study presents the methodology and proposals for the restoration of an abandoned quarry in the Greek island of Milos. The local data (soil, vegetation etc.) of the island were collected, analysed and compiled into thematic maps using Geographical Information Systems. The restoration plan was based on the G.I.S. database and suggested the revegetation of the disturbed lands with herbaceous (grasses and legumes) or woody (shrubs and trees) plants. Plants should be indigenous or from other areas with the same vegetation type. Herbaceous plants establish and grow easily protecting the soil from surface erosion. The revegetation success depends on the seed quality, planting season and methods as well as local environmental conditions. Our proposals aim to restore the abandoned quarry with methods that follow the natural succession of vegetation, have minimal environmental impact, low cost and the expected result will be similar to the surrounding undisturbed land.

For over thirty years the Population Balance Model, PBM, has been the mainstream modeling method for comminution unit operations and comminution circuits. For commercial comminution circuits the method is based on erroneous physics and dubious numerical mathematical methods leading to non unique solutions that have little extrapolative value and faulty control strategies. In short the PBM is wrong. Given is a detailed analysis showing a number of non trivial flaws in the linear PBM. Moreover, a simpler model is presented that leads to a solution of the comminution circuit predicting the size distribution output over a variety of conditions. Because the linear PBM is firmly entrenched, an award is offered, $10,000, to any researcher that can use the linear PBM and its present numerical methods to predict the typical straight line, self similar, output of wet mills over a variety of grinding times.

The indicator random function formalism allows a common coding of hard numerical data, constraint intervals, and soft qualitative information as prior probability distributions. The soft kriging algorithm allows interpolating these priors into posterior probability distributions of the unknown. The curse of ?negative kriged grades? is solved. The consideration of additional soft information, whenever deemed necessary, becomes possible within the framework of well-proven kriging techniques.

Ground support requirements for safe and economical design of room and pillar coal mining layouts are reviewed. The design methods for mine roofs and mine pillars are discussed and the role of the geotechnical aspects is considered. It is shown that current support design procedures in the United States do not utilize fully the latest research findings and the need for more effective technology transfer in coal mine ground control is emphasized. Promising new developments in ground support are identified and possible research areas are suggested.

The remediation of contaminated sites has gained great importance in many industrialized countries. One method for cleaning the polluted soils from such sites is "soil washing," the scope of which is the separation of the contaminants from the soil. Soil washing is an outstanding example for a successful transfer of technology from Mineral Processing to Environmental Engineering. This presentation intends to introduce the Mineral Processing Engineer to soil washing through a short review of the fundamentals, and the discussion of an example for a successful soil cleaning operation in Switzerland.

The rapidly escalating capital costs for new projects, or extension of existing projects, has placed greater emphasis on maximum use of existing resources. Thus, when increased grinding capacity was required to achieve metal production from lead-zinc ores a number of alternate approaches were studied. The most cost effective way of achieving the required 5% increase in grinding circuit capacity was to install upgraded instrumentation and computer control of grinding - Fewings, Wickham and Wiseman (1). Once the computer installation cost had been borne by the financial returns from that project, other projects involving computer control were economically viable on an Incremental cost basis. These Included centralised control of tailings thickening and return circuit water distribution, centralised control of the crushing plant and use of the computer as a data processor for an on-stream analysis system for flotation slurries.

All coal preparation unit operations in which fine coal is handled depend to some extent on wettability of coal surface by water. The wetting results from interactions between the coal surface and water molecules that are determined by the composition of coal matrix (interrelated with coal rank) and heterogeneous constituents such as oxygen functional groups, mineral impurities and pores. The contact angle of water on an unoxidized, homogeneous coal hydrocarbon matrix is calculated to be 100o, and much lower values measured on real coal specimens result from contributions from the heterogeneous constituents. While the effect of wettability is critical in flotation and oil agglomeration, suppression of respirable dust, and coal water fuels, it has been shown to play a significant role also in coal flocculation with semi-hydrophobic and totally hydrophobic flocculants.

Selective flocculation of iron ores is extremely sensitive to the type and amount of soluble salts in pulp solutions. Chemical precipitation of alkaline earth ions combined with ultrasonic treatment deactivates their adverse effects without using any environmentally ill-defined reagents. The manner in which ultrasonic treatment affects starch adsorption on hematite, dissolution of quartz, and the selective flocculation process was investigated. Selective flocculation tests were conducted in the presence of up to 400 ppm calcium ion on a quartz-hematite mixture by precipitation as calcium carbonate, and the role that silicate ion generated by ultrasonic treatment plays in achieving the selectivity of separation is discussed.

A new suspension electrolysis method has been developed, which enables without any gas or dust pollutants a direct anodic extraction of zinc from zinc sulfide concentrates, while simultaneously oxidizing sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur. The investigations were performed in a laboratory scale electrolytic cell with suspended zinc sulfide concentrate particles with or without graphite powder additions in dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte. By regulating the redox potential of the electrolysis system in combination with some additions, for example [Fe3+/Fe2+, MnO 4/MnO2, MnO 2/Mn2+ or MnO 4/Mn2+], the anodic dissolution reaction of zinc sulfide has been accomplished effectively without evolution of hydrogen sulfide. Under optimum conditions the anodic current efficiency of zinc dissolution ammounted up to 95 %, while sulfide sulfur was converted nearly completly to the elemental form. Purification by removal of sulfur and other impurities gives a zinc sulfate solution suitable for electrolysis to cathode zinc.

The boron review did not arrive in time for publication in the June issue. The United States was the world&apos;s largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1992. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled 1Mt (1.1 million st) in 1992, yielding 521 kt (574,000 st) of B203 for a total estimated value of $333 million. That was about 20% less than 1991 revised production figures, and less in value by $107 million. The United States continues to provide essentially all of its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1992 was about 900 people, the same as in 1991. In 1988, 1250 people worked in the boron industry. The Bureau estimated that total world production of boron in 1992 was about 3 Mt (3.3 million st), or about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st)of B2O3. World production in 1992 was about equal to revised 1991 levels. US production Mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals. INTRODUCTION Uranium mill tailings, by-products from the mining and milling of uranium oxide contain all decay products of uranium-238, uranium-235 and all the Th-232. The ore containing all daughter products of the parents U-238, U-235 and Th-232 is ground to approximately 50% under 200 mesh particle size and after extraction of uranium, the residue, described as tailings, is discharged into natural depressions confined by dams. These deposition sites are referred to as tailings ponds. Tailings ponds are located in two mining districts, Bancroft and Elliot Lake in the Province of Ontario, Canada. Some parts of tailings ponds are dry up to a depth of several meters, whereas other parts have a water table very close to the surface and still others are covered with water. The extent to which the daughters of uranium isotopes are in equilibrium with the parents U-238 and U-235 is dependent on the age of the deposit in which uranium occurs and the extent to which the decay products are removed by geochemical processes. In the mining district of Bancroft, the deposit is known to be approximately 1 billion years old, whereas in Elliot Lake, the deposit is considered to be approximately 2 billion years old. The ratio of radiogenic lead isotopes Pb-206 and Pb-207, can provide some estimates concerning the age of the deposits. If the tailings are not affected by geochemical processes, the tailings would contain all the daughters of the 4n+2 and 4n+3 series in equilibrium concentrations. The equilibrium activities of some members of the 4n+2 series are calculated in Table 1. [ ] The amount of radiogenic stable lead isotopes depends on the age of the ore deposits. If the deposit in each district is of the same age, a definite relationship is expected with respect to the activity of Pb-210 and the radiogenic stable isotopes. Approximately 33 million tons of the tailings have been deposited in the early 1960&apos;s, approximately 20 years ago. During this period of storage, the segregation of uranium daughters, like radium, the diffusion of gaseous product, Rn-222, and removal of precursors by geochemical processes, can cause dis-equilibrium. Earlier work concerned with the uptake of Ra-226 and Pb-210 by plants (Kalin and Sharma, 1981), indicated that the concentrations of Pb-210,in samples of the tailings taken, were lower than the expected equilibrium. The diffusion of radon from a variety of matrices has been studied (Tanner, 1964). It has been shown that the diffusion coefficient is dependent on the particle size in which its precursor is present, the moisture content and the surface conditions. The direct measurement of radon concentrations in the environment near the ponds is dependent on the metereological conditions. Kramer, Schroeder and Evans, 1964, have examined the variations in the concentration of radon near the ground level with respect to atmospheric variables, such as changes in barometric pressure, precipitation, wind velocities, thermal atmospheric instability. It is difficult to relate the total release of radon from the ponds to the atmosphere over an extended period. Our measurements of Pb-210 and total lead on tailings samples taken from 16 sites indicate that the ratios of the activity of Pb-210 to the mass of total lead can provide parameters which are helpful in the estimation of the total amount of radon and its decay products diffusing from the tailings ponds. In this paper, we present the results of measurements of activities of Ra-226, Pb-210 and total lead in samples from various ponds situated in both mining districts. The measurements were confined to samples taken at 0-25 cm depth from the surface.

The pneumatic jackleg drill remains a widely used tool in development and production drilling in many small-scale and narrow-vein underground mining operations in North America. Several drawbacks of this technology (unsatisfactory drilling rate, noise, vibration, presence of oil mist, etc.) and the successful introduction of water-powered jackleg drills in South Africa have stimulated the interest of many mine operators. The performance of both drill types have been tested in a mine site in Northwestern Quebec, Canada. Results of the testing of penetration and advance rates as well as environmental aspects are presented. They show a superiority of water-powered drills, even though the difference in performance is less significant than that reported from South Africa. Further research avenues are proposed to better evaluate the potential of water drilling technology in North American metal mines.
