Where weak rock zones are encountered in the slopes of an open pit, they may control pit wall stability. Back analysis of slopes involving failure through weak rock enables an estimate to be made of the weak rock strength. A system of consistent rock mass classification is described which enables the weak rock mass material to be described and classified from drill hole core. Correlation with back analysis determined strength allows strength estimates to be assigned to each rock mass classification.

Production reporting is a natural computer application and is often one of the first applications implemented by new computer users. Automation of a manual reporting system is a good place for new computer users to gain computing experience because generation of basic reports - is fairly straightforward, and automation can often be justified easily on the basis of clerical cost savings. Computers are particularly well-suited for reporting applications which generally satisfy the criteria for effective computerization. Three characteristics must be present to effectively utilize a computerized system: 1) The potential application must be precisely definable. If an algorithm for data processing cannot be developed, data cannot be processed. 2) The operation to be performed must be repetitive. If a particular function is only going to be performed once, computerized systems development is probably not justified. 3) The volume of the data to be processed must be relatively large. If only a few items of data must be manipulated, manual methods are probably adequate. Although a computer can perform only a few functions (it can compute; it can make comparisons; it can rearrange data), it can perform these functions much faster and more accurately than a human being can. The ability to classify and reclassify data in a variety of ways and the ability to summarize data make the computer an ideal tool for production reporting. Production reports can be classified into three major categories, depending on their purpose. Reports can be used for (1) informative, (2) analytical, and (3) control purposes.

Molycorp's gravity type panel-caving operation employs a system of short raises to transfer ore from the Grizzly Level to the Haulage Level. The raises have normally been developed using a conventional drill-and-blast method or a combination conventional/raiseboring method. A new method was needed that would be less labor intensive, provide a safer work environment for personnel, provide a stable raise that could be self-supporting and a method that would be cost competitive with the conventional system.

Large deposits of eudialyte, a low grade zirconium bearing mineral, occur on the Southern Coast of Greenland in the Ilimaussaq intrusion. Various processes were tested in the laboratory to recover eudialyte from these ores, including flotation, leaching, gravity and magnetic separation. A combination of dry and wet magnetic separations has the advantage of simplicity and the least environmental impact for the location. This paper summarizes the results of laboratory testwork to develop a two-stage treatment process to recover the eudialyte by magnetic separation.

As part of the waste characterisation program to address site reclamation, WISMUT GmbH initiated 56 columns operated as large-scale humidity cell tests. The columns were initiated to assess the acid generation characteristics of waste rock from 14 waste rock piles distributed around the site. Of the 56 tests, 11 are ongoing and have been operational in excess of 160 weeks. The results to date from these long-term tests are surnrnarised. In particular, the methods for, and importance of, establishing the availability of the carbonate neutralisation potential and acid generation potential respectively, are discussed. Geochemical controls on uranium, and the conformity between the geochemical models MINTEQA2 and EQ3/6 in assessing these controls are discussed. Testing indicates that waste rock with an MS-NP:AP ratio in excess of about 2.7 should result in net neutral pH conditions.

Refractory gold ores have been processed by bio-hydrometallurgical process at B.R.G.M. (Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières), Research Centre ,Orleans,France. The liberation of gold has been studied and the following steps for gold recovery improved. The overall process flowsheet has been established comprising different ways of treatment before the final discharge of the effluent. Iron and arsenic are successfully precipitated under well controlled Eh-pH conditions. Long term stability tests have been conducted and the research programme is to be continued with the crystallo graphic studies of the precipitates. Economical studies have been performed on the base of data obtained on parameters studies.

Promoting a strong safety culture requires that the significance of unsafe acts be emphasized. This can be achieved vividly by accurate recreation of unsafe actions in the workplace, demonstrating explicitly how they resulted in a fatality or significant injury. Visual reconstructions of incidents can be realized today on personal computers. The approach described in this paper uses readily available PC software and hardware and results in output that can be presented to the intended audience using a variety of delivery methods. An actual incident involving a surface mining operation is reconstructed using Virtual Reality techniques. Use of the visualization approach to accident reconstruction as a training tool is discussed.

A review of the geology and mineralogy of several of the better known hydrothermal platinum-group metal (PGM) deposits is undertaken. Along with new data from two recently discovered occurrences in Nevada, a number of common characteristics of these deposits are identified. Newly described PGM occurrences in Nevada are the abandoned Gibellini mine workings characterized by limestone-hosted hydrothermal Mn-V-Zn-Ni mineralization and the granite-hosted base-and precious-metal veins of the Gingerload claims.

Although Mexico is known for its important base-and precious-metal deposits, and lately oil, some industrial minerals play an important role in the Mexican economy. Sulfur, the most important industrial mineral produced, accounts for approximately 7.5 percent of the total value of mineral production. This commodity is followed by fluorspar, which accounts for 6.4 percent. Predominantly, the fluorspar deposits are very high grade (75 percent CaF) and are contained in lower Cretaceous limestone in the states of Coahuila and San Luis Potosi. Base-metal deposits in the area of Parral (notably San Francisco del Oro), however, have become important fluorite producers in their own right. (San Francisco del Oro has 12 percent fluorite gangue.) Salt from the Guerrero Negro solar-evaporation ponds in Baja California account for 6 percent of the total shares; phosphate from Baja California also accounts for 6 percent. Barite from man to deposits in Lower Cretaceous limestone in Coahuila and exhalative deposits in the Paleozoic section of Sonora account for 1.0 percent. In addition, Mexico is an important producer of gypsum, graphite, and celestite. Although graphite and celestite are not large-scale operations and thus do not contribute much to the Mexican economy, the Mexican graphite and celestite deposits are among the most important in the world; Mexico is one of the world's few sources of celestite. The celestite is in the form of large, high-grade mantos in Cretaceous limestones in northern Mexico.

Water from the Forest Queen mine adit near Silverton, Colorado drains into a natural wetland. Because the pH of the water averages 5 and the iron concentration averages 18 mg/L, it was thought that the wetland might naturally treat the water. Of most concern with respect to the aquatic environment is zinc whose concentration averages 0.60 mg/L. Starting in October 1997, the surface waters, ground waters in the peat substrate, and the sediments in the wetland were sampled and analyzed four times over the course of four months. The adit water primarily remains as surface water where Fe, minor amounts of Al, and no Zn are removed. After the adit water enters the peat, then it is found that the pH rises to 5.8-6.5 and sulfate is reduced. The removal of Zn and A1 is caused by these two changes. However, Fe in its reduced state is quite soluble and may be remobilized in the reduced environment of the peat.

A model describing size reduction and mineral liberation during grinding has been extended to include multiple classes of composite particles. The majority of the model parameters have been directly determined using computerized image processing equipment to analyze the products from batch grinding tests. A coarse-grained sphalerite ore from Tennessee, representing a nearly ideal binary mixture of sphalerite and dolomite, has been used to experimentally validate the model for the case of dry, batch grinding. In all cases, excellent agreement has been observed between the model predictions and the experimental results.

Remote sensing is being tested for its ability to identify the severity of impact on streams that are subjected to contaminated mine drainage (CMD) in the Southern Anthracite Coalfield of Pennsylvania. Airborne digital multispectral video images of acidic and near-neutral CMD are being compared with field spectra, water chemistry, mineralogy, and microbiology. Spectral differences in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum are caused by the presence of schwertmannite in the acidic precipitates and ferrihydrite in the near- neutral precipitates. The acidic CMD averages 1,500 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with schwertmannite; the near-neutral CMD averages 87 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with ferrihydrite.

Public domain ventilation simulation programs have been well accepted by the mining engineers, but preparing the input and interpreting the results are labor intensive tasks. High performance personal computers and versatile CAD packages provide the means to quickly create the network and display the results. The enhanced simulators work from computerized as-mined map, the projected mine layout and timing maps. Using on screen displays of these maps and the snap-on feature of AutoCAD, the planner designates nodes in the ventilation network, connects them into branches and selects the branch characteristics from a side bar menu. The color coded ventilation network appears with the parameters shown along each branch. The software then calculates the length of airways and computes the branch resistances where needed and converts the input into the required format and passes the data to the Pennsylvania State University or U.S. Bureau of Mines ventilation programs. Output is available in graphical as well as report format. The color coded graphs include pressures at the nodes and flow quantities on the branches. Since the networks come from the mine maps, the ventilation displays are to scale and can be plotted separately or superimposed on the mine maps.

The potash review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. Potash is a general term that includes several water soluble potassium salts: potassium chloride (muriate of potash), potassium sulfate (sulfate of potash), potassium magnesium sulfate (sulfate of potash-magnesia), potassium nitrate (niter) and sometimes potassium carbonate. Potassium carbonate was the original potash when it was leached from wood ashes and dried in large, cast iron pots to black-to-gray crystals (ash) to form "pot ash." "Pearlash" was potash roasted to white crystals. In modern terminology, the great preponderance of "potash" is the mined forms. It is estimated that 95% of the potash mined around the world is used as fertilizer. In 1840, Justus von Liebig demonstrated to the scientific community the importance of potassium to the growth of plants. But there was no low-priced source of potash available at that time. Principles of Operation and Mechanical Features General Mechanical Description Sieve-bend screens are high-capacity screening devices which utilize stationary, concave, wedge-bar screening surfaces. A complete sieve bend is comprised of a feed distribution chamber, a structure for holding the screen surface, and collection chambers or chutes for oversize and undersize materials. In devices used for metallurgical practice, provision is usually made for reversal of the direction of flow over the surface, either by rotating the surface or by changing the feed nozzle position. The size of the unit varies in height from 5 to 8 ft, and in width from 2 to 8 ft. The orientation of the wedge-bar surface is such that the slots between the wedge bars are perpendicular to the flow of feed material over the surface. The feed distribution means is arranged such that the flow of liquid suspension is distributed evenly and tangentially over the width of the screen surface. An intelligent supervisor developed using expert system tools and applied to a crushing plant is presented in this paper. The structure of this supervisor, based on a model of a human operator, consists of a Knowledge base containing a qualitative model of the process, and a Rules base with the heuristic logic used by an operator when supervising a plant. The simulation results obtained show the potential of this type of systems to supervise the automatic operation of a plant.

11.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some of the selection and design considerations for leach pads and liners. Leach pads and liners are generally chosen to provide the required or desired levels of low permeability and foundation conditions at minimum cost. The selection and design of a particular liner depends upon its anticipated use and performance, and what materials may be available. A leach pad is the firm base for a heap. When geomembrane liners are used, the pad is the firm, compacted foundation upon which the liner is placed. In the case of a clay liner, the clay liner is usually also the pad. It is important to consider the design of a pad or liner in terms of a system. The "leach pad system" consists of the prepared foundation, bedding layer (if used), liner (s), seepage collection or detection layer (if used), and cover layer. Foundation preparation is necessary to ensure a stable base for the rest of the leach pad system. A bedding layer is used to protect a liner from being punctured by large angular fragments in the foundation material. A seepage collection or detection layer, consisting of well-drained material and (sometimes) pipes draining to a collection sump, is included when a double liner is used. A cover layer on top of the liner can serve the following purposes (van Zyl and Strachan, 1986): • Preventing of ultraviolet light exposure to sensitive geomembranes; • Limiting evaporation from compacted clay liners and thereby eliminating cracking of such liners; • More efficient collecting of leachate; and • Protecting the liner from damage during heap construction. Economic evaluations of alternative liners for a project must include the overall system. For example, a geomembrane liner may require different foundation preparation and cover material selection and placement than a clay liner. Liners can be made of compacted clay onsite, amended soil, or geomembranes. This paper addresses the effects of using jet fans as booster fans in mine ventilation networks. A method was developed to determine the pressure generated by jet fans using the momentum theory. The influence of a reduction cone and other ventilation parameters on the jet fan pressure was analyzed. Verification experiments conducted in the Waldo Mine are described. Examples are given to demonstrate the conditions for the effective use of jet fans.

One of the more difficult problems frequently facing geologists and mining engineers is that of estimating the ore reserves of mineral deposits. Cost conscious mining operations invariably require an accurate knowledge of tonnage and grade for both short and long term planning. A case study is presented, showing how a classical frequency distribution was fitted to a population of drillhole assays. Using these results, a grade- tonnage curve is derived using the Lasky expressions, and the results discussed. A geostatistical analysis is then presented. First, variograms are drawn, models fitted to them and analyses made of drift and anisotropy. Second, simple block kriging is carried out and the results plotted on large 1000 scale plans, suitable for overlay with routine .mine plans. Kriging results are verified using two independent techniques: random kriging on a regular grid and inverse distance weighting. Finally an attempt is made to optimize the drilling grid, and to fully tabulate the total computer running costs for the work described.
