Most of the bauxite deposits in Europe belong to the karst type. They are located mainly ill Southern Europe along the Mediterranean Sea and in the Ural Mountains. Lateritic bauxite deposits occur on the Russian Platform, in Poland, Northern Ireland and in Turkey. Tikhvin-type deposits arc found on the Russian Platform. Bauxite formation in Europe started in the Middle Devonian. The main bauxite forming period was the Upper Cretaceous. Very few bauxites are younger than Eocene. Most deposits are covered by overburden of up to 1000 m. Prospecting is carried out by drilling. Several geophysical methods are used to detect the hidden deposits. Geostatistical methods were introduced in several countries for evaluation of the reserves and the geometry of the deposits. Data on bauxite production are given for 1982 and since the beginning of mining in Europe.

During slow-cooling crystallization of iron-making blast furnace slags, most rare earth elements recrystallize in an artificial "mineral" identified as calcium cerite. Scandium (Sc) and europium (Eu), however, concentrate in a sheetlike "mineral." In this investigation, the mineralogy of this sheetlike "mineral" was studied. It was identified as being in the mica group and was called a rare earth-bearing barium fluorophlogopite. One of the objectives of this study was the recovery of this "mineral." The study indicated that it can be effectively recovered from the slag by flotation using dodecylammonium acetate or a combination of dodecyl-ammonium acetate and sodium oleate as collectors.

The present study refers to passive systems for the treatment of acidic liquid effluents emanating from mixed-sulphide mines by means of an-aerobic compost wetlands. An effort was made for the thermodynamic study of the chemical systems that are involved in the reactions during the simulation of this specific system using laboratory columns and a pilot scale application. The substrate used was a mixture of cow manure, a high alkalinity organic substrate and chestnut woodchips, while the synthetic solutions prepared for the laboratory experiments contained the three basic metal contaminants i.e. Fe, Zn and Mn. The precipitation mechanism of the contained metals and the form in which these are precipitated was therefore investigated by constructing the equilibrium phase diagrams (Eh-pH diagrams) of the Me-S-C-H2O systems. Based on the experimental results from laboratory and pilot scale tests the stability conditions of the chemical species taking part in the aqueous solutions were also determined and verified with the thermodynamic data available. The thermodynamic analysis of the system was performed for ambient temperature, which is the prevailing temperature on field constructed compost wetlands. Results were further validated with the results obtained by the application of a five step sequential extraction procedure in the remaining substrate in order to determine the form in which the metals were precipitated.

One of the major problems in the exploitation of deep copper ore deposits in the Legnicko-Glogowski Copper Field is ground control and, in particular, roof control of the headings. The depth of copper deposits ranges from 600 to 1200 m. The parameters of ore-bearing rocks and the surrounding rocks show considerable variance of strength properties along the mining thickness (Fig. 1). The roof of the openings exploitation headings consists of dolomite-calciferous rocks. The roof strata consist of layers, the thickness of which vary from several centimeters to 0.6 m (sometimes to 1.0 m). These strata differ in strength and are characterized by igneous and sedimentary discontinuities. On the basis of studies in structure, properties and geological mining conditions of the roof strata in Polish copper mines, the method of roof classification has been developed. (1) This method uses the stability index "L" of the roof, calculated from [ ] The value of "t" ranges from 0, l to 0,8. Based on the value of "L", four classes of the roof (Table 1) corresponding to different degrees of fall hazard have been developed. The mining of copper ore deposit is carried out by a single lift room-and-pillar mining system or a two-stage room-and-pillar system with roof caving. (3, 4). The single lift room-and-pillar mining system is most often used. It consists in working of the deposit of 2.5 to 4.5 m mining thickness, 150-350 m long mining line, consisting of parallel room faces 6 m wide with pillars 5.7 or 16 m wide. As the mining line advances, cross-cuts joining individual rooms are made, thus forming support pillars 3x5, 7x7, 5x16, and 7x16 m (Fig. 2). The two-stage system (Fig. 3) mines the deposit with rooms 6 m wide into blocks 25 x 35 x 25 x 45 m. During the second step these pillars are worked with rooms and cross-cuts into pillars about 3 x 4 to 4 x 5 m (retreat mining). The pillars are crushed just before the fall of the roof. The maximum opening of workings in the two-step system is about 10 m, i.e. one belt entry and one row of bearing pillars. In single lift room-and-pillar systems it is about 35 m., i.e. three belt entries and three rows of bearing pillars. The support of the headings consists of expansion bolts 1.6-1.8 m installed in a bolting pattern 1.1 x 1.5 m. In both systems the fall step is about 10 m, i.e. the width of a belt and a bearing pillar. The indication of rock mass pressure are, in such cases, limited to the deformations and damage of side walls. Radiometric studies of rock mass loosening showed that the maximum range of lifts in side-walls immediately after web was 2 m (4,5). In the course of time the cracked side rocks fall off, thus widening the heading. The morphology of side-walls is influenced by the location of the heading in relation to clump layer/tarry. Biological destruction of cyanide in mining waters has been demonstrated effective in the lab and in the field. Applied Biosciences Corp.’s ABMet water treatment technology is used in the mining and other industries for the removal of various inorganic contaminants including metals and nitrate. An aerobic ABMet-CN process has shown great promise in efficiently and effectively removing cyanide from even very cold waters. Bench and pilot data will be presented.

Autogenous grinding in Turkey was first applied to quartzite where the mill is grate discharge type with an internal diameter of 2.99 m, having a length of 3.20 m and a capacity of as to 11.0 tons per hour. The second autogenous grinding was applied to a copper ore at Murgul Cakmakkaya Flotation plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works having three mills 26 feet in diameter and 10 feet in length in close circuit with hydrocyclones. Recently, alterations were made in grinding circust by adding pebble mills. Furthermore, rubber liners and lifter bars were introduced pebble extractor and classifier were new features in the primary mills and circulating load was reduced by 20-50 tons per hour. At the end of these charges, capacity of each mill line was increased to 48 tons per hour with a full capacity of more than 9000 tons per day. Thirdly, autogenous grinding has been executed successfully on the slags of Samsun Smelting Plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works with a mill of 20 feet in diameter and 6 feet on length having pebble mill following autogenous grinding.

The transition from centrally planned to market economy affects methods of economic analysis. The models which were used in the past are riot valid presently, however they we're the seed which initialized the development of methods and applications. There is more than twenty years of experience in modeling of coal mining development. The first attempts were devoted to select the moment of mine construction commencement in order to meet planned output. In Poland significant development of such models began in 1986. Within the Central Research and Development Program there has been a continuous development of models. These models from econometric to optimization ones, were a certain sequence which, in accordance with changing economy system, led to the last version of the model. It is the most suitable one for contemporary problems of coal mining in present Polish circumstances.

An extensive geotechnical instrumentation program was undertaken during the construction of a 6.7 m (22 ft) inside diameter tunnel to monitor the ground-structure response and to check assumptions made for design. The tunnel was advanced through sedimentary and igneous rock using a fully shielded tunnel boring machine (TBM) with both temporary support and final lining provided by precast concrete liner plates erected in the tail section of the TBM. The parameters measured and evaluated include rock deformation, strain in the precast concrete liner, changes in tunnel cross section and groundwater response. In addition, an automated camera system is described which was mounted on the TBM to provide a continuous photographic record of the bedrock conditions exposed at the tunnel springline. The performance of various types of instrumentation equipment in an underground construction environment is also evaluated.

The algorithms to model three stoping methods - sublevel, down- the-hole (DTH) and cut and fill stoping have been developed. These algorithms are capable of designing and performing economic analysis for one or more number of stopes in a continuous orebody. The design and economic analysis of each individual stope are first obtained. This is followed by the composite stope design layout and overall economics of the stopes under study. This paper describes only the stope design aspects of these models. The programs have been written using Fortran 77 with Tektronix graphical aids available at Imperial College Computer Centre (ICCC) London and are based on the basic data obtained from Khetri Copper Complex (KCC) and Rajpura Dariba (a zinc mine) in India. Minor modifications, however, may be necessary in some routines when used on other systems and for other mines.

Techniques are being developed for measuring the mass concentration of respirable diesel exhaust particles found in underground coal mines. Studies have been conducted over the past five years to investigate size selective sampling techniques to measure the respirable mass concentrations of diesel exhaust and mine dust aerosol particles in underground coal mines. Results from these studies have been used to develop design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler. Three personal diesel exhaust aerosol samplers have subsequently been designed and evaluated in both laboratory and field settings. These samplers use size selective classifiers for the determination of the respirable mass concentrations of mineral dust and diesel exhaust particles. Their designs are based on the premise that diesel exhaust particles are predominantly less than 0.8µm while mineral dust is greater than 0.8 µm. One design, selected for field evaluation, consists of a 10 mm nylon respirable dust cyclone followed by a 0.8 µm cutpoint impactor and afterfilter. The cyclone removes the large nonrespirable particles while the inertial impactor stage, collects the mineral dust on an impaction plate and allows the diesel particles to penetrate to an afterfilter. The two sample fractions of the respirable particles (<0.8 µm and >0.8 µm) are gravimetrically analyzed to determine the concentrations of the diesel and mineral dust portions in the respirable coal mine aerosol.

The continuous improvement initiative is based on careful mapping of the key levers associated with each activity of business. The individual levers are then evaluated to determine their potential to affect the profitability and safety of the operation. The most promising are diagnosed for root causes. These root causes are then addressed to enhance benefits. Through a structured approach of mapping, brainstorming, evaluating and instigating change with follow up measurement and reporting; Barrick Goldstrike is anticipating an increase in throughput at the autoclave facility of 10% with little or no capital expenditure. The resultant approach to Continuous Improvement will be utilized throughout the Goldstrike facility and then throughout Barrick&apos;s world-wide operations.

Innovative technological advances provide a means for the metallurgist to more thoroughly understand the mechanisms of separation and foster new ideas from old. Problems associated with the implementation of new technology can be overcome effectively if the metallurgist thoroughly understands the metallurgical systems with which he is working.

The properties of Henkel's Aurix® resin which uses a guanidine functionality to recover gold by ion exchange have been described in publications of the International Mineral Processing Congress and Randol International (1)(2). The purpose of this paper is to provide an update on the results of further testwork using Aurix®. Specifically, this paper presents the first results of resin in pulp testing, all the results previously reported were for testwork carried out using synthetic gold leach solutions.

The fundamentals behind a novel approach for creating inorganic/polymer hybrids are described. The binding of +2 charged ions, specifically Cue-and Cat+, to ionic functional groups is explored through UV-Vis spectroscopy and zeta potential measurements. The novel approach uses an electric field to drive ions into a functionalized polymeric matrix, thereby inducing the precipitation of calcium phosphate species. Scanning electron microscopy images of the resulting composite illustrate the results of these precipitations with two distinct morphologies observed.

Asamera Minerals Cannan Mine has been producing a 170 g gold/tonne (5 oz gold/ton) siliciaus flotation concentrate since July 1985. Flotation concentrate is shipped to a smelter for gold recovery. Numerous processes have been investigated to economically produce bullion on site. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant test results of a bacterial assisted oxidation of the refractory minerals. Economic comparisons with autoclaving and roasting processes are included.

Water quality impacts of shallow water submersion of partially weathered and oxidized waste rock containing reactive sulphide minerals were investigated in laboratory column lysimeter studies. The waste rock investigated was highly reactive, contained oxidation reaction products from previous exposure and weathering, and had a low sulphur content of approximately 2 % S, mostly as pyrite. The submerged waste rock, though previously weathered, had high oxygen consumption, resulting in rapid depletion of dissolved oxygen in its pore water, within a shallow depth of ~2?5 cm from the surface. The surface and pore water qualities of the submerged waste rock were significantly impacted by the dissolution and release of previous-oxidation-reaction products, which contributed to their rapid acidification and having increased concentrations of dissolved SO4, Fe total and other metals: Al, Mn, Ca, Cu, Ni, Zn and Pb. Despite the high porosity and permeability of the waste rock, the diffusion controlled mass transfer from the submerged waste rock to the overlying water cover was relatively low for most ionic species. Additional surface oxidation of the sub-merged, partially weathered waste rock was on-going, but its impact on the overall surface water quality was low and masked by the dissolution and release of previous oxidation reaction products to both surface and pore water regimes.

In this report, the effect of catalytic amounts of activators on gold dissolution in clear solutions with gold disks and with slur­ries of gold ores is presented. Activators are nitrogen and sulfur aromatic heterocyclic compounds, which catalyze the gold dis­solution reaction in cyanide and other lixiviant solutions. Gold dissolu!ion studies in clear solutions indicate that the catalyst must bmd to the gold surface to catalyze the dissolution reac­tion. A concentration dependence for activation is observed· the optimum catalyst concentration depends on choice of activtor lixiviant concentration, and solution agitation. Nitrogen and sul fur aromatic heterocycles catalyze gold dissolution in slurries of gold ores with cyanide and other lixiviants. The typical proce­dures of agitated leach and rolling bottles were used to evaluate gold leaching rates. Activation has been demonstrated with a variety of ore types.
