The US economy grew at a rate of 4% in 1994 and the gross domestic product rose to $6.74 trillion. With 261 million people - 605,000 in mining, including petroleum -the United States has l 10 million dwelling units and 200 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing units authorized in 1994 rose 14% to 1.4 million units. New car production rose 11 % to 6.6 million units, while truck and bus production rose 30% to 5.2 million units. The inflation rate was less than 3% and the prime rate of interest averaged 7.15%. The producer price index (1982 = 100) for fuels and related products and power was down 4% to 78, while metals and metal products rose 5% to 125. Chemicals and allied products rose 3% to 132, and non-metallic mineral products rose 3% to 124. The merchandise trade deficit rose 25% to $166 billion. Disorder in the former Soviet Union led to substantial dumping of mineral materials. With vast mineral resources, the former Soviet Union land area totaled 22.4 million km2 (8.6 million sq miles). In comparison, the North Ameri¬can Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) area (United States, Canada and Mexico) totals 21.4 million km2 (8.3 million sq miles).

This paper addresses the problem of seeing into rock. We will consider two methods, first to use radar, or electromagnetic wave pulses, to probe into rock ahead of mining and second to use sonar, or sound wave pulses, to probe into rock. Both are non destructive and capable of giving information on hazards ahead of mining. Such hazards might be a borehole full of water possibly leading to a high pressure aquifer somewhere above the mine level, changes in rock type, or the edge or top of a salt dome. Most of the work described in this paper deals with probing through rock salt which we have done successfully to over 2000 meters maximum range. We discuss first the radar probing and then the sonar probing. Introduction In this technical note, pilot-scale tests with two types of gravity concentrators, the Knelson separator (Anon., 1983; Forssberg and Johansson, 1984) and the Mark VIIA Reichert spiral concentrator (Balderson, 1982; Forssberg and Johansson, 1984), are described. The experimental work was concentrated on the relatively untried Knelson separator. The materials tested have different concentration characteristics: one was an artificial ore with excellent liberation characteristics and with a wide difference in density between valuable and gangue minerals; the others include a spiral concentrate containing gold from the gravity circuit of Boliden, Sweden, an old scheelite tailing from Yxsjöberg, Sweden, and an auriferous ore, containing gold, that had not been crushed to full liberation. The latter three materials contained other heavy minerals, e.g. pyrite, that can interfere with concentration. Knelson separator The Knelson separator is a compact centrifugal separator with an active fluidized bed to capture heavy minerals. A centrifugal force equal to or exceeding 50 times the force of gravity acts on the particles. The strong centrifugal force traps the heavier particles in a series of rings located in the concentrator while gangue particles are flushed out (Fig. 1). The particular separator used in the tests has a 15-cm (6-in.) diam bowl and can process between ~70 and ~250 kg/h.

Computer-based dispatching in open-pit truck haulage operations yields many benefits of current interest to mine management. The key tangible benefit is a substantial productivity increase with a given fleet of equipment or, alternately, a significant reduction in equipment required to meet production quotas. Other tangible benefits in mines with concurrent operating objectives include minimizing rehandle, meeting several blending constraints simultaneously, and ensuring a target plant feed rate. Intangible benefits include production forecasting, performance comparisons of trucks or shovels of different manufacture, and extensive on-line report generation. Recent advances in mini- and micro-computer hardware and software and solid state electronics permit design and implementation of system features not feasible a few years ago. This paper discusses system aspects with emphasis on dispatching algorithms needed to meet concurrent objectives.

An advanced numerical model based upon the Discrete Element Method (DEM) has been developed to provide the engineer with unique detailed information to assist in the design of transfer points in large industrial conveyor systems in mining operations. This modeling technique provides a quantitative description of the bulk solids movement through the transfer point. This information consists of the velocity distribution of the bulk solids and the stresses within the bulk solids. The DEM model also gives detailed information concerning the impact forces acting on the transfer structure and the conveyor belts from the bulk solids flow.

The paper describes industrial size experiments with a 100 m3 flotation cell validating the Size Specific Flotation concept and the Tank Cell design. It discusses some variables affecting the flotation of coarse particles. The results were good. The flotation recovery of coarse particles increased up to 50%. In finer sizes the flotation improvement was 5-15% The enhanced flotation of especially the coarsest particles increased the total recovery close to 10%-units compared to conventional cells in a porphyry copper flotation. The related power draw was only 50-80% of the power of conventional cells.

Introduction Improvements in the process of rock excavation by blasting involves better control of one or more phases of the fracture process immediately after detonating the ex- plosive charge. Total control of the process involves individual control of (1) The number of fracture planes. (2) The crack initiation sites. (3) The direction of crack propagation (usually radial). (4) The stress field driving the fracture front. Fracture plane control is usually accomplished today by using the smooth wall blasting method; however, investigations by the authors (1) indicate several areas where this method could be improved. These improvements include: a) generation of stress concentration factors at the location of the initiation sites; b) protection of the remaining region of the borehole wall to inhibit initiation of any cracks not associated with the fracture plane and fragmentation pattern; c) limit peak detonation pressures to avoid borehole crushing and maintain by stemming residual gas pressure in the bore- hole during the crack propagation period. This paper describes experiments con- ducted with a charge holding device fabricated from thin-wall steel tubing which was partially slit at fracture locations. The tube lined the bore-hole in laboratory tests to simulate smooth wall blasting. Results showed close control could be achieved relative to both the number and the location of the fracture initiation sites.

Kaolin, normally an inert filler when compounded with polymers, is converted into a strongly reinforcing pigment by prereaction with certain functional silanes. Modification of kaolin with amino and mercaptosilanes allows it to form crosslinks and confers significant improvements in modulus, abrasion resistance, compression set and other physical properties of a broad range of polymers.

The effects of bacterial adaptation and partial replacement of leaching solution on the rate and extent of bioleaching reactions of a complex sulfidic gold ore were investigated. The ore was first concentrated by bulk sulfide, flotation, and the sulfide concentrate was treated by bioleaching using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The residues from bioleaching were treated by cyanidation to extract the gold and silver. Bacterial adaptation before bioleaching significantly increased the rate and extent of bioleaching reactions. Similarly, the daily partial replacement of leaching liquor enhanced to a great extent the leaching rate, and in some cases, increases of up to ten fold were observed. Both bacterial adaptation and solution replacement increased the gold recovery by about 2-fold and that of silver by about 1.3-fold. In this work, more than 95% of the gold and more than 98% of the silver could be recovered from the sulfidic gold ore when bioleaching was used ahead of cyanidation, compared with 18.3% and 52.3% by direct cyanidation.

The influence of surfactants on the crystallization of calcium sulfate was investigated in both hatch and continuous systems. The investigation was per formed at the following conditions. 343 °K, 28% P205 and with a sulfate level of 2.0%. At concentrations of 5 and 200 µgig, respectively, dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSH) and sodium diisooctil sulosuccinate (SSNa) promoted both an increase in the size and a reduction in the length/width (L/W) ratio of the calcium sulfate hydrates produced in the hatch and continuous crystallizers. Unique effects were observed in the batch system at higher DBSH concentrations. At 10 µg/g, the precipitation of hemihydrate crystals with a distinct morphology and texture occurred under conditions where dihydrate precipitation was expected. Above 50 µg/g, the precipitation of calcium sulfate hydrates was completely inhibited.

The US Bureau of Mines undertook a study of those factors influencing worker escape from an outby coal mine fire. The results of this investigation were two-fold. First, those factors affecting escape from a mine fire were defined, and second, the relationships between these factors were identified. Although the individual components had been studied before, little information was available on their interdependence. Fault tree analysis was used to evaluate the miner escape scenario. After constructing the fault tree, a two-phase analysis of the tree was conducted. During the first phase, the minimal cutsets of the fault tree were identified and ranked. These sets were the smallest sequence of events leading to fatalities during the fire. This ranking revealed that reduced evacuation delays, improved self-rescuer training, and improved stopping construction were important in controlling fatalities during escape from the mine fire. The second phase involved additional analyses of the fault tree. These evaluations were started by first determining occurrence probabilities for each event in the fault tree. Two types of sensitivity analyses were then conducted. The first analysis dealt with changes in event probabilities and their impact on the likelihood of fatalities. The final sensitivity analysis considered dramatic reductions in the probability of fire fatalities. This revealed what event probability values were necessary to reach this level. These results have revealed various remedial actions that could be used to improve the survivability of an outby mine fire.

Addwest Minerals' turnaround of the Gold Road Mine in 1996 proves the old adage "mines are made, not found." The underground mine, located in Arizona's San Francisco mining district, was reopened in 1995. Start-up proved difficult because the initial mining method created significant ore grade dilution. The Chino Mines Co., a Kennecott- Mitsubishi partnership, located in Hurley, NM, recently completed a $405 million modernization of its mine, concentrator, and smelter facilities. The mine/concentrator modernization commenced in 1980, and the smelter modernization began during 1982. Modernization of the mine and concentrator facilities involved increasing the mining rate from 98 kt/d (108,000 stpd) to 152.2 kt/d (167,800 stpd). Ore mining was designed to increase production from 20.2 kt/d (22,300 stpd) to 34 kt/d (37,500 stpd). A new concentrator was con- structed near the mine using semiautogenous grinding. The new smelter uses the INCO flash smelting process, increasing capacity by 40.8 kt/a (45,000 stpy) to 99.8 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of saleable copper.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Canadian open-pit mines are highly mechanized and use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. During the past few years, productivity improvements at Canadian open-pit mines have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment, in-pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of global positioning systems (GPS). Mine planning has become computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning. Equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep the equipment functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1997, the mining and mineral processing sector employed 370,000 Canadians, contributing $26.2 billion to Canada's gross domestic product (GDP). The value of production of the Canadian mineral industry, including coal, amounted to $19.1 billion in 1997. Gold remained Canada's leading mineral with production valued at $2.8 billion. This was followed by copper ($2 billion), coal ($1.9 billion), zinc ($1.6 billion) and nickel ($1.9 billion). [ ] Synthetic crude oil from oil-sands mining operations in Alberta represents an important part of Canada's petroleum production. In 1997, the value of synthetic oil production was $2.87 billion. Canadian oil-sands mining has contributed significant technology developments in Canada.

Chemical and radioisotope stratification studies were carried out in an abandoned uranium tailings pile at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. The tailings, with an average thickness of 7 m over an area of 16 hectares, were deposited approximately 20 years ago on a layer of black peaty material which overlays deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sands. Geohydro-chemical investigations of this tailings area have been ongoing since 1978. The radioisotope profile study was conducted on three adjacent sites. Solid core samples, collected with a split spoon sampler at various depths, were analyzed for various chemical and radioisotope constituents. The results indicated by 2 distinct zones of stratification; an upper zone, where the constituents were uniformly distributed, and a lower zone, near the peat-tailing interface, which showed increasing concentration with depth. Within the peat layer, the concentration decreased rapidly with no significant levels of contaminant penetration below the peat layers observed, though the samples were limited. The pH profile showed that the top 5 m of the tailings have been oxidized, the average soil pH in this zone was 3.4 compared to 5 .8 underneath it. The groundwater hydrology of the system was observed to be complex showing downward and lateral flow in the dry season and lateral and upward flow during the spring and periods of heavy rainfall. The results are discussed in terms of a model based on the combined segregation and settling process of the tailings fine fraction, and the geohydro-chemical interaction of the solid and liquid phases.

The thought of constructing an intake shaft five miles from the shore and 142 feet below the surface of Lake Huron from the bottom up sounds like a questionable venture. Why would one want to raise a shaft from the bottom at the end of a 16 foot diameter, six mile long tunnel to within six feet of the bottom of Lake Huron? The answer lies in the fact that Lake Huron is seldom a tranquil lake. The construction period and workable days from the surface are limited. Two previous attempts to construct this intake shaft by conventional means had been thwarted by lake storms. These approaches were circular sheet-piling cofferdams with the intention of sinking a 30 foot OD, five foot wall thickness concrete casing in the center. However lake storms, particularly in the months of November and December, proved disasterous. The last attempt was halted in December 1970 when three of the seven circular cofferdams on the north side were destroyed by pounding waves. Then, due to the nature of the technical difficulties and limited construction schedule time, it seemed desirable to devise a way in which construction could proceed without being too lake-sensitive. Obviously, if men could work from the tunnel and proceed upward toward the bottom of the lake, not having to worry about the soil collapsing and bringing the lake in on their heads, the construction would be unimpeded by adverse weather. The answer to this, however, required techniques beyond the ordinary. Approximately two years previous to the start of this shaft, nine shafts had been efficiently constructed on the same project site

Both microgravimetry and crosshole seismic tomography are means by which subsurface collapse and rock failure may be observed. We show results of calculations that predict changes in gravity and gravity gradient that result from void migration, bulking, and hydrology disruption due to room and pillar mining. Crosshole seismic tomography also holds promise for detecting and mapping changes in structure during subsidence. Commercially avail- able logging tools, advances in theory, and recent field results strongly suggest tomographic surveys are now possible. Subsidence phenomena which may be located are faulting, joint separation, bed parting, water table changes, and formation outgassing.

INTRODUCTION Rock bolts are one of the most common mine support systems in use today with approximately 90 to 95 million used annually in the nation's coal, metal and non-metal mines. By far the largest majority of these are steel bolts with mechanical expansion shell anchors. Many theories have been advanced to explain the ground control achieved through the use of rock bolts. Most of the theories are applicable to a specific set of circumstances, geology, geometry, rock properties and in-situ stresses. Examples are those which relate the beam building or strata-hanging theories of ground support used in the rectangular openings of a coal mine(l). In tunneling and most metal mining, either circular or horseshoe shaped openings are normally used. Here, bolts may be used to develop a radial stress around the opening, which adds stability to that opening, or merely pin blocks of rock back into more stable ground so that they cannot slip. In most cases, the bolts are torqued to a specified value to seat the anchor and to achieve the pre-load or tension that is desired. To be effective, however, this tension cannot be lost through bolt slippage or creep frequently caused by blasting, moisture attack or raveling of the rock surrounding the drill hole, etc. Furthermore, in soft rock or in oversized holes, sufficient anchorage cannot be achieved with the mechanical anchor, and in very brittle rock the concentration of forces produced by the expanding anchor might cause a crack to propagate from one drill hole to the next.
