Kaolin, normally an inert filler when compounded with polymers, is converted into a strongly reinforcing pigment by prereaction with certain functional silanes. Modification of kaolin with amino and mercapto silanes allows it to form crosslinks and confers significant improvements in modulus, abrasion resistance, compression set and other physical properties of a broad range of polymers.

The occurrence of rock bursts in some deep mines throughout the world constitutes a severe operational hazard. In addition to endangering the safety of the miners, the rock-burst problem is a major factor in mining economically in deep mines because of the loss of production and expense owing to cleanup and repairs following a burst. Developing means of controlling or eliminating rock bursts has been the subject of intensive research for over 50 years. While much has been learned about the effects of rock bursts, little is known about their basic causes; hence, control measures have been at best only partially effective--attested to by the number and severity of bursts that continue to occur throughout the world each year. In the Coeur d'Alene mining district of north Idaho, the rock-burst problem continues as the silver and lead veins persist at depth. These veins are presently being mined at greater than 7,000 feet below the surface and will be mined to some 10,000 feet in the future. The majority of rock bursts in this district occur in pillars. While pillar bursting has been essentially eliminated in some deep-mining districts by longwall techniques, modification or application of this technique to the thin, irregular, and near vertically dipping veins of the Coeur d'Alene district has not been found to be practical. The creation of pillars is a consequence of the horizontal cut and fill mining method used. Figure 1 shows a vertical longitudinal projection of the silver vein at the Galena mine, illustrating the mining method. Stoping progresses between raises and is carried upward between levels. A horizontal pillar is created as a stope approaches a mined-out level. Recent broad-band micro seismic monitoring of rock-burst-prone stopes by the Bureau of Mines has shown that potential burst zones could be delineated weeks in advance of a burst and that a definite sequence of events took place prior to the occurrence of a pillar burst (1). Hence, time was available for control measures to be effected when a stope pillar reached a critical burst geometry.

The estimated total energy demand for the U. S. is 60 quadrillion BTU for 1970 and is expected to more than double by the year 2000. Today the energy crunch is here. It is evidenced by brownouts to conserve electrical energy, and the shortage of gas and oil. Many such headlines, including suggestions for energy rationing, are in the news today. Paradoxically we have an abun¬dant source of energy in the form of coal. Energy consumers, however, are geared to use fuel in other forms. It is the intent of this presentation to discuss processes under development for conversion of the energy contained in these vast coal reserves to more usable forms. Coal conversion to synthetic fuels should be of particular interest to those engaged in mining. Coal consumption in a single conversion plant is expected to range from 10,000 to 40,000 tons per day. Plants will be located at the mine mouth and will operate continuously 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Further, many such plants will be needed., For example, looking at natural gas only, the supply/demand gap is estimated to reach 13 trillion cubic feet per year by 1985. Assuming that gas from coal conversion were to fill only 101, of this gap, 15 plants producing 250 MMSCFD would be required. These plants would consume about 90 million T/Y of coal or 135 million T/Y of lignite. It will indeed be a challenge to mine, suitably prepare, and transport coal at these projected volumes without interruption. Many ideas have been conceived for better utilization of coal and these are in various stages of development. Those supported by public money are covered by the Annual Report of the Office of Coal Research (OCR), Department of Interior. The two processes to be discussed, the Consolidation Coal Company's (Consol) C02 Acceptor Process (1)(2)(3) and The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company's (PAMCO) Solvent Refined Coal Process (4)(5) are both sponsored by OCR.

Most geologic and mining engineering consulting firms* began to experience the recession with declining billing levels, number of inquiries, and proposal requests in late 1981 or early 1982. As of today, most of them have been functioning at reduced income levels for nearly a year. And while many consulting firms have apparently reached a stabilized income level, they can see little prospect for attaining normal (pre-late 1981) billing levels and income for the remainder of 1983. A few firms have escaped being affected by the recession. Such com panies almost without exception are small (fewer than 20 personnel), offer a limited range in technical capabilities, and tend to be highly specialized in a particular niche. They include those specializing in the heap leaching of precious metals ores, in ground water testing programs, and in the derivation of computer-aided programs to monitor particular mineral processing functions. Those firms affected by the economic downturn have instituted a variety of policies and undertaken actions to cope with significantly reduced incomes to bring fixed costs in line with the depressed demand for services. These changes fall into the following broad categories: • management and management practices; • markets and market definition; • marketing and the pursuit of assignments; and • administration and personnel relationships. Not all of the perceived changes have necessarily been instituted by every consulting firm, and any one appears sporadically instituted. Management and Management Practices In favorable times the managers, and often the owners of the equity, of consulting firms tend to concentrate their attention on the part of the business they find most satisfying and enjoyable. For some, this means acting as project or assignment leaders, even undertaking a specific technical aspect of the job. For others, it means constant marketing with the associated heavy travel and entertainment schedules. In unfavorable conditions, such as the current recession, managers tend to spread themselves far more thinly, expending time and effort on all facets of the business including marketing, proposal preparation and cost estimating, budgeting, general administration, accounting and cash flow monitoring, project/assignment overview, and actual client work. The manager who in favorable times concentrated on client work is now less billable. The manager who concentrated on marketing is somewhat more billable. The manager now needs to pay attention to and expend equal effort on each facet of the business just to keep all the facets in relative balance. Falling behind schedule on a client job or carrying an unduly large percentage of accounts receivable exact a cost to the firm. Clearly the absolute cost to the firm is the same whether demand for service is good or slack. But in periods of slack demand the firm is frequently less able or even unable to bear such costs. Marketing and Market Definition Markets appear to have undergone some significant changes: • Federal and state governments have assumed a greater importance as providers of work vis-a-vis both industry and private groups. • Projects with increase-in-capacity aspects have given way to projects with maintenance or reduced operating cost aspects. • Projects searching for new deposits of minerals in generally new locations have given way to projects reviewing known mineral districts or known deposits. • Industrial mineral and mining companies have exhibited a great propensity to cut back the use of consultants and to undertake as much work as possible in-house. Further-more, a number of industrial mineral and mining companies have entered the competitive arena with consulting firms, submitting proposals (usually to the federal government) in an effort to keep their staffs intact and occupied. In response, consulting firms have reevaluated their capabilities by reviewing old work and reassessing personnel. The purpose is to broaden the services offered and the potential client base, thus redefining the available market. For example, a firm specializing in assessment of technical and cost parameters of a deposit would normally assist a prospective lender in judging the deposit's suitability for project financing. That same company could easily expand into the field of analyzing production costs for an individual operation -something that is needed in periods when lower prices reduce profit margins. Similarly, a firm that has confined such economic assistance to commercial banks could expand to provide its expertise to other lending and even equity buying in-stitutions such as insurance companies. The world’s largest manufacturer of mining and construction equipment said the addition of an AC electric drive truck line will provide its customers with products to fit key applications. “We are very proud of the strong leadership position that Caterpillar has attained with its mechanical drive trucks, and we will continue to invest in strengthening that position,” said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar’s Global Mining Division and Caterpillar Inc. vice president. “We also recognize that there are unique applications that would make the addition of ac electric drive an important and attractive complement to our current truck line.” This is the largest investment Caterpillar has made in mining trucks in its history.

Red mud has been reported as a potential resource for lithium. To investigate the leaching behavior of lithium, a lithium-rich red mud was neutralized with hydrochloric or oxalic acid and then leached with acetic acid. When red mud was neutralized using dilute hydrochloric acid, about 58 to 60 percent of lithium was leached with 25 percent acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min, while more than 95 percent of sodium and 85 percent of calcium were dissolved in the leachate solution. When oxalic acid was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lower lithium leaching efficiencies of about 42 to 47 percent were observed. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the same conditions. In this study, 25 percent (v/v) of acetic acid at 85 °C for 60 min was demonstrated to be the optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid-neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results are useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

Nutrien has six potash mines in Saskatchewan and has been proactive in maintaining the integrity of their tailings facilities through ongoing assessment, design, operation, inspection, and monitoring. Nutrien commissioned a system inventory and semi-quantitative risk analysis (SQRA) of all dikes to further environmental stewardship at their potash facilities. The inventory assessed nearly 100 dikes; each dike was rated according to a probability and consequence factor and assigned a risk score. The risk scores were used to develop a risk matrix for each of the six sites and risk-response actions for each dike and segment. The inventories and SQRAs will help each site assess priorities for investigation and risk mitigation, if necessary. The study results will also help Nutrien refine corporate wide tailings governance standards and demonstrate compliance with various governance regulatory obligations.

MFIRE is a mine ventilation and fire interaction computer simulation program. It allows transient state ventilation simulation and features mass based flow rates, natural ventilation, air recirculation, fan curve fitting, airflow reversal and product of combustion tracking. MFIRE was designed to accommodate the needs of the mining industry, for routine ventilation calculations and mine emergency planning. This paper describes recent work by the US Bureau of Mines and Michigan Technological University to improve MFIRE by incorporating humidity in the mass flow and heat exchange calculations, a data file preparation program, and variable reference density in the network calculations. Recent bug fixes are also discussed.

Concealed thermal events in longwall gobs present safety hazards for underground coal miners and can significantly interrupt mining production. The probable causes for such thermal events range from coal oxidation at slightly above ambient temperature to smoldering fires due to spontaneous combustion of the broken coal left in the gobs. Locating such “hot spots” is the key step for planning and implementing mitigation measures to bring such thermal events under control. If a mine section, or even an entire mine, has to be sealed, understanding the status of the sealed mine atmosphere is important for the decisions guiding subsequent actions. The gas composition data obtained through the tube bundle mine atmospheric monitoring system is firsthand information of great value. Fire ratios proposed by various researchers and derived from gas composition data are useful in determining the fire status and even approximating the source locations (Timko and Derick, 2006). However, the applicability of each of these ratios under particular conditions should be carefully evaluated. The use of properly combined fire ratios can enhance the certainty of analysis. The explosibility of a sealed mine atmosphere deserves primary concern for safety reasons during seal construction, idle time and reopening of the sealed area.Mine atmospheric monitoring data from a longwall mine with flame fire have been analyzed. Efforts have been made to identify the possible causes, locations and statuses of these events using the obtained gas data, as well as other ventilation, geological and mining parameters. The effect of injected inert gas to control the events has also been quantified. The explosibility of the sealed atmosphere has been determined using two methods.

A shortage of skilled personnel and the ever-present wish to increase workplace safety, quality and system performance automation, operatorassist or even autonomous systems have become key development targets. The paper will present the current state of the art in light of these special conditions.

A froth flotation plant to recover by-product molybdenite must be designed specifically for the selected separation process and the type of ore being treated. However, some general rules concerning by-product molybdenite plant design can be suggested that would be valid for most processes. The term by-product molybdenite in this paper is limited to the recovery of molybdenite from copper porphyry ores, which essentially amounts to selectively separating molybdenite from copper and iron sulfide concentrates. In addition, most of the discussions would apply only to the almost universally used approach of floating the molybdenite and depressing the copper and iron sulfide minerals.

The function of advertising is communication. Viewing the advertisements of mineral suppliers exposes the reader to a broad spectrum of purposes: announcements of new products, availability and supply, departmental services, company image, etc. It is the advertiser's hope that the message being conveyed is the same message being perceived by the viewer. To maximize this probability, the advertiser at least must carefully construct precise copy, identify the target audience and select the appropriate advertising medium. A truly successful and efficient ad, however, also must accurately reflect a product's life cycle, i.e., the rise and fall in demand for a product. Buggy whips and radio tubes are classic examples of items formerly in high demand. Industrial minerals are similarly affected by occurrences of product life cycles.

In order to overcome some of the deficiencies associated with conventional fine coal cleaning methods, a novel process known as microbubble column flotation (MICROCEL?) was developed at Virginia Tech. This article provides an overview of recent commercialization efforts and in-plant testing of this technology. The results of the in-plant test work indicate that the MICROCEL technology offers several advantages for the upgrading of difficult to clean coals. The test data have also been used to develop guidelines for the design of coal flotation columns and to validate existing scale-up procedures.

There are many examples, historical and recent, from the underground coal mining industry where during emergency response the response and ultimately the outcomes, could have been significantly improved if adequate systems had been in place for the collection and management of relevant information preceding the incident, the acquisition of information during the incident and the use of the information for risk mitigation and decision making purposes. The subject and process of knowledge management is possibly the most critical for would be rescuers of endangered coal mine workers, as it has been demonstrated at numerous coal mine incidents that a lack of or mismanagement of crucial information can be fatal for both the rescuer and/or the endangered coal mine worker. This paper will underline the scope and importance of robust knowledge management systems for emergency response within the underground coal mining industry and the process by which it is being achieved within the Queensland Mines Rescue Service and the NSW Mines Rescue Service.

"The Mined Tunnel is part of the Central-Wan Chai Bypass and Island Eastern Corridor Link (CWB), which is a strategic road along the northshore of Hong Kong Island targeted to alleviate the heavy traffic congestion. The objective of this paper is to review the performance of construction of a 160m long Mined Tunnel with a trinocular cross-section area of 460m3 and a combined span of about 50m underneath the southern approach ramp of the existing Cross Harbour Tunnel (CHT) by sequential excavation method (SEM) in hard rock. Mechanical excavation of tunnel by adopting the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), together with the application of NGI Q-system allows observational approach and optimization of temporary rock support design. Furthermore, the good performance of optimized rock support and the stability of CHT are confirmed through instrumentation monitoring review. This paper also discusses the selection of different tunnel plant and equipment to achieve the planned rates of tunnelling by mechanical excavation in competent granitic rock. INTRODUCTION The works of the CWB mainly comprise construction of 4.5km dual three-lane trunk road, of which a 3.7km section is a tunnel connecting Rumsey Street Flyover in Central to Island Eastern Corridor at North Point (see Figure 1). The Mined Tunnel runs from the ex-Public Cargo Working Area (ex-PCWA), underneath the existing CHT, and through the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter. The Mined Tunnel passes at an oblique angle beneath the southern portal of CHT over a length of some 50m. CHT is the primary sensitive receiver of this project and is utilized with a daily throughput of about 120,000 vehicles that far exceeds the design capacity of 78,000 vehicles per day. Hence it is necessary to choose the most appropriate tunnelling method to preserve the structural integrity of the CHT. Other sensitive receivers in the vicinity include structures to the north of the Mined Tunnel, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC); and to the south of the Mined Tunnel, the Police Officers’ Club (POC)."

The efficiency of search for porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits can be greatly increased. A model exploration system is here presented to show how geologic literature data and field surveys can be aided by modern statistical and computer methods. Assuming that major ore deposits occur in clusters, it is possible to evaluate rapidly large areas at modest cost and with minimum investment risk. An example of the success of these methods is given. Clusters of mine density and metal production covering the State of Nevada were plotted and machine contoured. Selection of a 47,300 square-mile area on the Nevada-California border was made. Within this area, detailed analyses were performed, and a 3000 square-mile site was picked for subsequent field examination. To initiate efficiently the field work, 81 stream sediment geochemical samples were collected and analyzed for copper, zinc, and molybdenum. These data established local variance and necessary statistical controls. Following this, a total of 151 geochemical samples were used to survey the 3000 square-mile area. Computer contouring of results directed attention to specific target areas for detailed geologic analysis, property acquisition and drilling. A total of 22 copper-zinc and molybdenum anomalies were identified. Four of these were recommended for further exploration. To date, two have been acquired and drilled and preliminary ore reserve and financial analysis have been made on one. The estimated cost and time for the regional exploration phases leading to these targets were thirty man-weeks and $16,000.

Compressed air is a relatively inefficient yet very convenient vehicle for transmitting mechanical energy. It is inefficient when compared to, say, hydraulic or electric energy systems since compressor and pneumatic machine efficiencies are quite low (in the range 20-65%) and reticulation losses can be quite high unless adequate pipe diameters are used to minimize friction drops. It is convenient in that capital and maintenance costs of pipes and machines are exceptionally low, the equipment is flexible and lightweight, the technological level is simple, the form of the energy supply is intrinsic- ally safe, and as an additional minor but psychologically important benefit, it provides a ready source of cooling and air supply for emergency use in deep hot mines. It is for these reasons that compressed air is a premier source of energy for many forms of underground equipment, in particular hand or rig-mounted rockdrills, some forms of rock- handling equipment, and a host of minor applications including agitators, small-lift pumps and temporary f am installations. In a typical S. African deep-level gold or platinum mine, compressed air generation accounts for 15% of the total mine electrical energy bill - more than is used for hoisting. In these mines it is not uncommon for over 100 km of underground compressed air piping to be installed, primarily to supply handheld rockdrills.

The problems of the domestic merchant fluorspar producers are more or less common with those of many other producers of metallic and non-metallic minerals. For more than ten years the American fluorspar producers have seen an ever lowering price in the market-place for the fluorspar product, while their labor and material costs-continue to mount steadily. This cost-price squeeze has forced out of business all but a few of the merchant producers, and only two captive producers continue to operate, and one of them has announced early curtailment. The prices of domestic fluorspar, of all grades, have declined because of the competition from cheaper foreign imports, principally from Mexico, Spain and Italy. Tariff protection on fluorspar, particularly on the highest or acid grade, has never been sufficient to cover the production cost differential between foreign and domestic fluorspars. Low ocean and barge freight rates have also contributed to the barring of the product of domestic mines from, the major consuming centers along the Gulf and East Coast. Because of the freight disadvantage, all but one or two fluorspar producers in the western states have had to suspend business. More than 80% of the domestic fluorspar is being produced in Illinois and Kentucky fluorspar districts which adjoin on both sides of the Ohio River.

"Replacing the aging roadway access to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, thereby ensuring traffic safety and robustness in case of seismic occurrences, provided an opportunity for major design improvements as well as the development of a parkway that would include the construction of four new tunnels. With an eye to the future, the Doyle Drive replacement project aimed to meet the highest standards for environmental stewardship beyond regulatory requirements. Understanding that lighting equipment is the tunnel‘s subsystem that uses the most energy, the operator was looking for a sustainable solution to light the tunnels. An Intelligent Lighting Control System (ILCS), designed specifically for road tunnels, was acquired to individually control the almost 2000 luminaires lighting the four tunnels. This paper will show the results in terms of energy and operational savings generated over the nine months of operation between the commissioning and the conference in April 2016. INTRODUCTION Electrical & mechanical (E&M) equipment represents an average of 10 % of a tunnel total construction cost. Once the civil infrastructure completed, E&M equipment drives the main part of the expense during a tunnel useful life. Table 1 below describes the impact of various types of energy consumption and their cost impact in tunnels of less than 500 m. It is clear that lighting is the sub-system that requires the most energy. A good lighting strategy is the key to reducing energy consumption due to lighting and a viable solution that will bring important savings in tunnel operations.With a price of $0.14/kWh in California and a planned increase between 3% and 6% per year during the period 2013-2040, the tunnel operators could not afford to overlit the tunnels—particularly when they have to operate it for the next 30 years. However, they also need to maintain the right lighting level to ensure driver safety all the time. The Presidio Parkway project includes the Battery tunnels, which are 240 m (790 feet) and 230 m (750 feet) in length, and the Main Post tunnels, which are 280 m (920 feet) and 315 m (1030 feet) in length."
