The chemistry of the element uranium enables industry to employ either an acid or alkaline carbonate leach solution for most uranium ores. Either method my be used for conventional, in-situ, or heap leaching. Uranium recovery in the leaching process depends both on the solubility of the uranium minerals and, on the access of the leach reagent to them. The uranium leaching rate is proportional to the liberated mineral surface area and the chemical reactions involved in the dissolution step. The dissolution of U(VI) and the oxidation of u(IV) to U(VI) are the basic chemical reactions in the leaching process. The active surface area is a function of the effective porosity and the particle size of the ore (1). Ore pieces, with a high porosity and high permeability, may provide a large active surface area even in coarser fractions. This type of ore might be suitable for heap or in-situ leaching techniques. Nonporous and impervious ores are usually more amenable to conventional milling where the active mineral surface is exposed by grinding the ore down to the liberation size of the mineral.

As the 2017 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., I am pleased to present the 2017 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., Vol. 342. A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). Those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2017 Transactions contains some of the most interesting research and insights from the past year and features an international slate of authors spanning industry, academia and government. Papers include the latest findings from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), a special review article on Heap Leach Modeling, and articles from two Special Issues on Rare Earths. The 2017 Transactions consists of a total of 54 technical papers, encompassing all 21 papers published in 2017 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering (Vol. 69) and all 24 papers published in 2017 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 34). Additionally, this volume contains 9 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All of the technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our Publications staff. As the 2017 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

For compliance with the Hazard Communication Standard and other federal and state regulations, numerous minerals, chemicals and products need to be evaluated for crystalline silica content at a threshold of 0.1 %. The polymorphs of crystalline silica that can occur in chemical and mineral products are quartz, cristobalite and tridymite. Other natural, industrial and synthetic amorphous silicas and hydrates must be distinguished from these polymorphs to prevent over-regulation in the workplace and environment. A number of industrial silica products are composed of glasses, expanded perlite, diatomite, slags, and precipitated and fumed silica products. Amorphous silica hydrates used for industrial products, include opal (hydrated silica of biogenic or inorganic origin), perlite, pumice and tuffs. In addition, crystalline and amorphous silicate minerals and chemicals, abundant in nature and industrial products, must be distinguished from the polymorphs of crystalline silica.

M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author's paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV's) such as semivariogram function y(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [ ] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, Xi+h is the sample value at the i + h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2, up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author's paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any arbitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author's practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV's. There are a lot of problems for modeling of one-dimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity.

Pyrite is the most common among the group of sulfide minerals in the Earth and abundant in most geological settings. This gangue mineral in association with garnet, hematite, magnetite, and other sulfide minerals acts as an indicator mineral in the Kubi concession of the Asante Gold corporation in Ghana. X-ray diffraction (XRD), air annealing in a furnace, energydispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were applied to investigate the crystal structure, identify individual elements, permanence, transformation, and chemical/electronic properties of such pyrite. The study aims to identify individual elements and to gain an understanding of the surface reaction mechanisms, as well as the properties of precipitated pyrite particles observed during the hydrothermal formation of the ore deposit. XRD shows that pristine and annealed samples contain some hematite and quartz besides pyrite. Results from air annealing indicate that the relationship between pyrite and hematite-magnetite is controlled by temperature. EDX reveals that the sample has O and C as contaminants, while XPS in addition reveals Ba, Au, P, Al, and N. These elements are attributed to pyrite that bonds metallically or covalently to neighboring ligands/impurity minerals such as oxides, chalcogenide sulfides, as well as the gangue alteration minerals of magnetite and hematite in the pyrite sample. These findings suggest that during the hydrothermal flow regime, pyrite, pathfinder elements, and impurity minerals/metals were in contact with quartz minerals before undergoing hematite transformation, which thus becomes an indicator mineral in the Kubi gold concession.

This morning I would like to speak to you about an area of chemistry that is enjoying a revival-organometallic compounds. This renewed interest, principally stimulated by defense needs, has already created new markets for the products of the mineral industry. Although the consumption of metals in these new products is modest at oresent, several hold promise of importance. Because this is a new and growing market, I am sure the Council of Economics is aware of many of its facets and is interested in new developments. Of course, the chemical industry has been a significant consumer of minerals for many years. I estimate that in 1957 the chemical-industry purchased a total of $1175 million worth of minerals as raw materials (not including fuels). An extensive research work was developed by Samarco Mineracao S/A to study the quality characteristics of blast furnace pellets produced with high content of MgO. Comparative blast furnace simulation tests were conducted both in Samarco and foreign laboratories. The objective was to evaluate the behavior of high MgO and normal Samarco pellets in the blast furnace operation. Additives such as dolomitic hydrated lime, dunite and magnesite were used for increasing pellet MgO content. The test results showed that pellets produced with high MgO content are similar in quality to normal Samarco Pellets.

INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties because it doesn't have the financial resources to pay for the development costs from its own funds and doesn't have the financial strength which will enable it to borrow the money needed for development. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a financing can be arranged for the small mining company. This paper is an attempt to describe the fundamental steps on how such financing can be obtained --in other words--what is required to provide ad- equate capital at a low cost for developing and bringing a mining property into production. Innovative financing follows from this. The basic keys for building and maintaining a successful mining company are "the four M's": Management, Market, Mine, and Money. The writer believes their order of importance is as presented and each is a building block required in order to obtain the type of financing that best suits the borrower and lender. MANAGEMENT Management must be experienced, highly organized, realistic, able to take advantage of opportunities and fulfill promises. Mine financing requires a variety of skills and concentration on the part of management. Management should have a thorough understanding derived from experience in geology, construction, mining and metallurgy and environment, marketing, and financial matters. Management must realistically visualize what will be produced at what cost and truly evaluate the risks associated so the proper security can be correctly designed. Since risk cannot be eliminated, the objective of management is to identify the risk which will be present in a given venture and assess the level of that risk which will be acceptable to the firm. Generally the risk which is present is subject to little or no modification. After management identifies and measures the acceptable risk the firm will proceed in a way that it will be least exposed. Management must determine its long-term objectives and strategies within the context of a constantly changing world. This question must be addressed before examining the sorts of risk which affect the development and operation of a specific property. The compilation and interpretation of "hard data" by competent people is good to a point but the experience and instinct of seasoned individuals are the important factors in management choosing a long-term direction for the corporation. The attitude towards risk greatly affects the goals of the corporation. Major risks in a mining project can be placed in four categories: 1. Market - Price, demand, substitution. 2. Costs - Capital, operating, financial. 3. Regulation. 4. Taxation. The feasibility study for a project is the fundamental tool used in the management of risk. Management should employ an experienced team with an established and well-understood set of ground rules for the preparation and assembly of a feasibility study. The necessary degree of realism is built into all levels of the study and if the project is technically feasible, the company's hurdle rate is then used to discount the base-case project cash flow in order to determine its financial viability. Understanding the geological significance of the mineral deposit is critical. There should be strong interplay among the pure regional geologist, the detailed mine geologist, the mining engineer, and the metallurgical engineer. The collaboration among these different disciplines will yield a feasibility study that is more reliable. The essence of this work must be appreciated and understood by the executives planning the financing. It is vital that they thoroughly understand the risks and make the proper risk assessments to cope with our rapidly changing market environment. Projecting future revenue values is paramount and is subject to much estimation. One way to mitigate fluctuations and the risk of falling prices is by selling production for future delivery. MARKET Since mining is a worldwide industry it is mandatory that bankers be aware of what is occurring in the marketplace, both foreign and domestic. Past EPA groundwater monitoring programs required that contamination not leave the boundaries of a disposal facility. New regulations under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) require that once hazardous waste constituents are detected beyond the limits of the disposal area, a program to define the rate and extent of contaminant migration must be instituted. Future regulations are likely to include even more stringent groundwater protection criteria. The implications of both the existing and probable future groundwater protection and monitoring requirements in terms of using geologic containment as a means of disposing of hazardous waste are explored in this paper.

This paper develops the procedure for simulating the special locked-cycle Work Index laboratory test using the kinetic parameters obtained by conducting standard size-mass balance (SMB) grinding tests and presents the results for three materials - quartz, a taconite iron ore and a bituminous coal. It was found that the WI could be determined by simulation; however, if a material breaks abnormally, a full description of its abnormal breakage is necessary. It was also found that the sensitivity of the WI test procedure to the sieving process and the estimating of the 80% passing size of the sieve undersize is sufficient to question the practice of quoting a WI to two or more decimal places. Finally, if a material grinds abnormally in the Work Index mill, then the WI test should not be conducted.

Problems in new strip mine development is a subject that could require several days to cover adequately. Coupled with the fertile imagination of television writers, we could probably expand it into a series rivaling Gunsmoke in longevity with just as many shootouts at sundown. It would-of course-be subject to a high Neilson Rating. To bring the subject into perspective, we will limit the comments to a general discussion covering western strip coal developments. Stimulated by increased demand for low sulfur coal, surface mineable western coal operations began a shift into high gear approximately four years ago. Then came last year's "energy crisis" that increased the pressure on coal development not only in the west, but nationwide. Several eastern power plants having dual oil and coal burning facilities were directed to discontinue using oil. Also, a number of new south and southwestern power plants scheduled to burn natural gas or of I commenced an ordered conversion to other fuels, namely, coal. The involved utilities with reserve positions accelerated their planning while others began the search for long-term commitments from coal producing companies. In addition, announcements were made for proposed mine mouth coal gasification projects in New Mexico, Wyoming, and North Dakota.

This paper presents an analysis of the heat transfer process between the mine ventilation air and the frozen rockmass. The heat transfer model takes into account not only by the mutual change in air and rockmass temperatures, but also by the phase change of ice-water- ice. Based on the analysis presented here it is concluded that the mine thermal regime can be regulated by having the air enter the mine through mined-out excavations or development airways.

Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) laboratory experiments have been conducted using cylindrical salt cores from the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP). TDR has been used as an instrumentation technique to quantify the type and magnitude of rock mass deformation. Laboratory shear and tensile tests were conducted to calibrate measured deformation versus changes in reflected waveforms. Coaxial cables grouted within rock cores were crimped to produce localized reference defects. The evaluation of waveform characteristics produced during rock deformation experiments shows a good correlation of cable response to both shear and extension of the salt

In 1990, Freeport Exploration began regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the republic of Indonesia (Fig. 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work that totaled 2.6 million hm2 (6.4 million acres). The company was subsequently awarded additional concessions that added 1 million hm2 (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments, Freeport’s current land position totals 1.9 million hm2 (4.7 million acres). Freeport began the exploration program to locate additional Grasberg deposits, the largest deposit in the Ertsberg district. But the company recognized that other types of deposits could be present in the largely unexplored area of Irian Jaya.

One of the most energy-intensive processes for producing submicron range calcite is stirred media mill. In the present work, numerous operating parameters such as solid mass fraction, grinding media size, media filling ratio, and grinding time have been investigated using a vertical type stirred media mill. The results are evaluated on the basis of mean particle size, specific surface area, and specific energy consumption. After conducting this study, optimum experimental conditions found to be as 70% media filling ratio, 25% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. Besides, energy savings up to 22% were achieved with the choice of proper media size.

Returning the original soil material to the surface of smoothed mine spoils is n practical means of restoring agricultural productivity. Research has established that high-sodium spoils in North Dakota (a) must be covered with about 70 cm of soil material to achieve maximum production; (b) topsoil must be segregated and spread separately from subsoil; (c) potential production depends on the quality of the soil material returned; and (d) erosion and upward salt movement must be controlled for sustained production. Erosion is best controlled by reducing final grades as much as possible during the smoothing process followed by prompt establishment of vegetation. Almost half the nation's cool reserves are in the Northern Great Plains underlying several million hectares of agricultural land. Social pressures to return mined land to agriculture or other productive uses have resulted in recent enactment of state and federal legislation, which is intended to restore productivity to disturbed areas. All such legislation relating to the Northern Great Plains has stipulated that useable soil material be saved and returned to mined land after spoils are smoothed. This requirement immediately raises questions as to how much soil material is needed, what criteria are important in defining useable soil material, how is the soil material to be handled in the earth-moving operations involved, and how can replaced soil material be maintained and revegetation. Scientists at the USDA Northern Great Plains Research Center at Mandan, North Dakota have conducted research on the reclamation of disturbed lands since 1970. Initially this research was designed to identify and characterize those physical and chemical properties of spoils that are most restrictive to plant growth (1). Basically, they found that any properties of spoils that reduced the efficiency of storage and utilization of the limited precipitation received adversely affected plant growth. Thus, in the Northern Plains, revegetation of mined land was found to depend upon the management of factors affecting the availability of water to plants - the same as on unmined land. After the major problems in revegetation were identified, technologies were developed to circumvent the effects of the growth-limiting factors (2). Basically two approaches were identified by which plant growth-restricting properties of spoils could be corrected: (a) various amendments (gypsum, sulfur, Fertilizers, mulches, calcium chloride, etc.) could be applied to spoils to improve their ability to conserve precipitation and provide water for plant growth; or (b) undesirable spoils could be covered with suitable soil materials to reduce or alleviate adverse effects. The latter approach appeared to be more feasible in most instances And is the approach specified in current legislation. The remainder of this paper discusses research on the use of roil materials returned to spoils and summarizes the information obtained.

As new technologies are introduced to the mining industry, the challenges related to their safe assimilation and the potential changes they bring to mining techniques necessitate adjustments to the current operations. Predictive simulations are critical to understanding unforeseen scenarios and shifting costly changes from the operational stage to the design. The Digital Twin methodology has gained a lot of attention in recent years. Many industries, from manufacturing to engineering and even social sciences, are adopting this approach to understand better the complex systems they are working with. By considering the enormous expenses and risks related to a pilot project, DT could replace that by acting as a prototype in which realistic tests and simulations are carried out with close to zero cost. DT includes a data hub, simulation and analysis tools, and visualization platforms to enable appropriate designs and monitoring plans focusing on unknown areas. A few examples of DT's application in mining include fleet management, Mine-to-Mill optimization (especially D&B), geotechnical digital twin (gDT), etc. When developing regulations, testing the efficiency of the mine layout, design, and magnitude of the restricted area and its access points, human-machine interactions, risk identification, and management processes, examining the efficacy of control systems, and monitoring, DT could help speed up (or completely replace) the process in the physical world.

This paper describes six basic stages between perception and production for a new sand and gravel deposit. Sand and gravel, like many of our natural resources, is taken for granted. It is assumed by John Q. Public that because sand and gravel is ubiquitous that it is available whenever and wherever needed - so long as it does not have to be mined in his neighborhood. This idea illustrates one of the enigmas of the industry, the fact that sand and gravel is abundant; however, its availability is another matter. Another problem is that this resource falls in the category of high volume, low profit materials; therefore, transportation costs are critical. Transportation roughly doubles the cost of these materials. It is not difficult to find sand and gravel, at least in Michigan. The problem is to locate a new source close to a market, near an adequate transport route (usually a highway) and in an area which will allow mining.

Porphyry type copper ± molybdenum deposits typically occur in the Phanerozoic rocks and have been well documented. During the past two decades a number of porphyry type Cu ± Mo deposits which range in age from 1055 ± 35 Ma to 2970 Ma have been identified in the Precambrian rocks of Australia, Canada, China, Finland, India, Namibia and Zambia. Kalanjkhand porphyry copper deposit M. P., India which is estimated to contain 789 million tonnes averaging 0. 83 percent Cu (millhead-grade); 0.004 percent Mo; 0.2 gm/t Au; 6 gm/t Ag and a cap of 7.532 million tonnes of oxide are averaging 0.8 percent Cu. The economic potential of the expanded copper mining milling, smelting and refining complex to be built in the future at Kalanjkhand, which is the largest porphyry copper deposit discovered to date in the Precambrian rocks of the world is presented.
