In the environmentally conscious social atmosphere today, reclamation in surface mines has become a main issue to the public and the regulatory committees. In response to this increased attention, many regulatory committees have begun to enact more stringent regulations on surface mining operations. Operations across all spectrums of the industry have seen changes. Recently and most visibly the mountain top removal mines have seen several new regulations focusing on environmental protection. Specifically regulatory committees have emphasized a focus on the methods of reclamation and recovery of layers suitable for vegetation. These layers are the most visible once the operation has concluded. Also, these layers have the most human interaction (farming, hunting, and house development). Often times the new regulations enacted are shifting from a performance base to a standards base. The key differentiator being a performance base dictates the final result while a standards base dictates the method to achieve the result. The very nature of many regulations (especially those that are standards based) not only challenges the physical limitations of the equipment used today, they come with a financial impact. For the purpose of this paper, the model will be a surface coal operation, utilizing draglines as primary overburden movers. The coal seam is ten feet thick, the overburden ninety five feet thick, the pits are 150 feet wide, and the dragline is a Bucyrus Erie 1570.

Hydrometallurgical processes are not free of environmental regulations. A clear understanding of the regulations under which the minerals industry operates delineates processing requirements at early stages. This paper deals' with federal environmental regulations with emphasis on the hazardous waste regulations promulgated in May, 1980. The procedure of EP toxicity test and an example of the test are described. Brief account is given of the current trend and future outlook of regulations.

The Dolph Mine fire site is located in Lackawanna County, PA, approximately three miles northeast of the city of Scranton. The fire was burning in both coal refuse (culm) and underground anthracite mine workings. It was reportedly begun by rubbish burning on top of a culm bank. A site investigation was completed in 2006 to define the extent of the fire and to recommend fire control measures. A cut off trench was selected as the principal control method. Plans and specifications were prepared in late 2006. The project was bid and a contractor selected in early 2007. The trench construction was completed in 2007. This paper describes the investigation and selection of the fire control method and discusses the trench construction.

Stochastic simulation has been routinely used for performing risk and sensitivity analyses in a variety of fields. The commonly used means of generating the simulations has been the Monte Carlo approach which usually employs a Simple Random Sampling (SRS) scheme of the variable distributions. This method is prone to sample clustering and requires a large number of samples to represent the distribution faith-fully. This can become problematic for simulating complex processes where it is impossible to run an arbitrarily large number of replicate simulations. The Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) method uses a stratified sampling approach which assures representation of the input distributions for any given number of samples. In this paper the LHS and SRS approaches are compared using a petroleum resource estimation example.

"Measuring mud bed level in a sedimentation device is an important control variable. Methods used to date for this purpose have had limited success providing continuous, consistent measurements at a reasonable price. This paper describes a new instrument for detecting the mud bed / liquor interface as well as bed density profiles. The state of the bed is measured directly with sensors located in the thickener. Data from bench-scale and full-scale tests show that the bed level is well defined and easily detected. In addition, full-scale testing revealed unprecedented information about thickener beds. Variation in bed density gave new insight into thickener bed dynamics, providing design and control opportunities never before possible. This novel instrument can significantly improve thickener control by providing reliable and consistent bed level measurements. It is also capable of measuring bed density profiles that can potentially identify significant operating problems early enough to take corrective action before experiencing costly shut downs. INTRODUCTION Numerous studies and papers have been devoted to the subject of thickener design and operation to achieve specified throughput and discharge densities. Mathematical models have been developed that present methods for sizing thickeners and predicting performance under varying process conditions. The compression effect of deeper beds on dewatering performance is a recognized phenomenon (Wilhelm and Naide 1981). This is one variable of many that are inter-related and influence thickener performance. For example in the steady-state, continuous operation of a thickener, if the solids feed rate increases and the bed level remains the same, the underflow discharge rate must increase with the result of solids concentration being lower. The interactions of these parameters are at the heart of thickener models. One such model (Burger and Narvaez 2007), predicts solids concentration profiles increasing downward and discontinuities between settling zones. This model uses sediment height (bed level) as a parameter that influences capacity calculations to achieve the specified solids concentration of the underflow. Knowing the bed depth is critical to maintaining stable thickener operation. Implicit in these modeling strategies are some basic assumptions such as homogeneous distribution of solids in the different settling zones, plug flow of solids through the settling zones and steady state operation of the thickener. The accuracy of these assumptions has not been verified because there has been little visibility inside the bed of full size operating thickeners. Testing of the instrument presented in this paper demonstrates that it provides a degree of visibility of the dynamics in a thickener not previously possible and indicates that the basic assumptions of the modeling strategies may not be completely accurate."

The flotation rates for various components were determined by separating the products of bulk flotation into size-specific gravity fractions. The effects of feed size and reagent addition on the flotation response of individual size-specific gravity fractions were evaluated.

An Overall View of the Japanese Ferroalloys Industry 1) Depressed Demand for Ferroalloys: In Japan consumption of ferroalloys in the last ten years has decreased, although there has been some fluctuation from year to year. During this term production figures of the steel industry, which are closely related to consumption of ferroalloys, are as follows: Shipment of steel products for the domestic market has declined gradually from 69 million tons in 1979, which was the peak year for steel production, to 60.3 million tons in 1982 and 60.4 million tons in 1983, the level of 1978. In addition, exports also have been a downward trend since 1976, which was the peak year with tonnage of 34 million tons, to 28 million tons in 1982 and 31 million tons in 1983.

The objective of this research was to establish the relationship between production, consumption and energy cost in the surface mining of bituminous coal. Specific energy sources such as diesel, gasoline, electricity, explosives and bituminous coal were considered in this study. Gain in net energy, proportion of the cost of energy consumption and total energy cost relative to total revenue of extracted coal were determined, and a new energy efficiency index and a new energy-cost ratio were established. A case study on an operating surface coal mine was carried out to demonstrate the application of the newly developed method. The results of this study can be used by the mine operators in establishing strategies for the optimization of energy production and consumption, and for reducing the cost of bituminous coal extraction.

Previous experimental results have shown that an increase in temperature and/or oxygen concentration leads to an increase in the hydrophobicity of fluorite (CaF2) with adsorbed oleate. Subsequently, ex-situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) transmission studies suggested that this increase in hydrophobicity was the result of double-bond reactions between adjacent oleate species adsorbed at the fluorite surface. Now an in-situ FT-IR study on single crystals of fluorite has been used to monitor this phenomenon using internal reflection spectroscopy (IRS) with the crystals serving as reactive internal reflection elements. The double-bond reaction has been correlated with in-situ adsorption density measurements. These results demonstrate that only the first chemisorbed oleate layer undergoes the double-bond reaction at an appreciable rate. However, multilayers of precipitated calcium oleate in the case of fluorite appear to react minimally even for oxygen saturated solutions at elevated temperatures.

When the 2008 Olympic Games begin in Beijing, China is September it will not only mark the end of the journey for the Olympic torch and the thou-sands of participating athletes, but the games will also mark the culmination of a massive amount of construction in the city. On display for the world to see will be 31 new and refurbished venues including the 91,000-seat National Stadium called the ?Bird?s Nest? and the aquatics center, called the Water Cube. What will not be featured as prominently on the television cameras broadcasting the games around the world will be the network of tunnels built beneath the city. But that infrastructure of rail lines will be of critical importance to the games. While preparing to host the world, China added a subway tunnel that will include four stops in the Olympic Park. The 4.4-km (2.7-mile) subway line that runs through the complex of stadiums, gymnasiums and parks began trial operations in June. Prior to the opening of that line, Beijing's No. 5 subway line, which runs through the heart of the city from north to south, opened in October. "Due to the time-consuming nature of froth testing in a laboratory environment, practical limitations require the development of a method of applying a single set of performance test data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) obtained for a single froth pump at a given speed to a range of froth pump speeds and sizes, % air content and liquid viscosities. Head, efficiency and flow all vary as functions of both liquid viscosity and air content. As such, it is necessary to develop a technique that can be used to interpolate from existing test data in order to predict froth performance for pumps of various sizes running at variable speeds. Details of the technique developed in order to achieve this goal, as well as the insights gained from analysis of the resulting regressions, are discussed. Additionally, comparisons are made between the performance predictions of this test-derived method and those of the Hydraulic Institute standard for the effects of liquid viscosity on centrifugal pump performance (ANSI, 2010).IntroductionPump performance data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) has been collected for a froth pump using an experimental loop outfitted with an array of pressure transducers, mass flow meters, an inverted U-loop, magnetic flow meter and an assortment of other instrumentation. Experiments were performed on pure water, water and air, pure corn syrup, and corn syrup and air. Data was obtained for % air contents of 0-30% and viscosities of 1- 15,000 cSt at eight specific valve positions (eight different flows as a percentage of best efficiency flow points) and the viscosity was changed by allowing the system temperature to increase during testing. The test pump is a 710-mm diameter impeller, GIW HVF, open shrouded, vented design that has its discharge axis oriented at 45° upward from the horizontal. The important role that mineral aggregates assume today in the construction and chemical industries is best attested to by the astronomical tonnage figures for the annual production of aggregates in the United States as reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in their "Minerals Yearbook." For 1965, latest publication available, the tabulation shows a total of 1,716,000,000 tons made up of 30,000,000 slag, 908,000,000 sand and gravel, and 778,000,000 crushed stone. A much more favorable statistical position for slag can be established by listing the world-wide tonnage. According to Dr. A, W. Lee, Director, British Slag Federation, in a paper presented before the 8th Annual conference of the British Institute of Works and Highway Superintendents, he estimates that the probable world consumption of slag is in the order of 100,000,000 tons showing--Great Britain with 10,000,000 tons, Germany, 15,000,000 tons, France, 1$000,000 tons and the United States with 30,000,000 tons. Thus it is seen that the United States accounts for almost one-third of the world's consumption of slag and the 3 west European powers another third.

Macroscopic characteristics of a complicated mine ventilation is remarked to build an expert system for mine safety in the Taiheiyo coal mine, Hokkaido, Japan. To gain the characteristics a large number of simulation were performed with varying aerodynamic resistance of the branches with regulator in mine ventilation network. The principal results of the study are as follows, (1) Pressure loss diagram for ventilation network with main and auxiliary fans enables capability of air circulation in the network. (2) H-Q (pressure-quantity) diagram gives capacity of air quantity In a network with main and auxiliary fans. (3) When airflow rate, [] through branch qi is changed by opening/closing regulator set in the branch, air flow rate, [], through branch p can be represented by the empirical formula. [ ] where Api and Qp,o are the constant coefficients. (4) Macroscopic characteristics mentioned above are available to make rules in an expert system for escaping route at emergency.

The effect of sample storage in argon and in air on kinetics of oxidation of pyrite from a coal source was studied using accelerated weathering test in laboratory columns. Prior to the weathering tests the samples were crushed, ground, and stored for various time periods in argon and air. The results showed a dramatic difference in the rate of oxidation of the aged samples. The differences were interpreted based on the hypothesis that the aging of pyrite led to the formation of surface coatings which changed with time. The significance of these results in pyrite/reagent interactions in flotation and in evaluating the acid mine drainage potential of pyritic waste materials is discussed.

The Tennessee Valley Authority began employing geophysical well logging for foundation investigations in October 1973. Since that time more than 3,000 holes have been evaluated for engineering purposes. The Tennessee Valley Authority has not actively used geo-physical well logging for exploration of construction materials, but we feel that much of the information derived from geophysical logs for foundation exploration is applicable to the construction materials industry. This paper will then discuss geophysical logging as applied to foundation engineering and, by implication, the feasibility of use in construction materials exploration. The use of geophysical logging and percussion drilling instead of coring has greatly expanded TVA's data acquisition capabilities and has also resulted in substantial savings in time and money. Economical boreholes are obtained through the use of large percussion track drills (Figure 1). This equipment is capable of drilling through the overburden, setting steel casing on the top of rock, and drilling the rock beneath the casing. Holes as deep as 400 feet (121.9 m) have been drilled by this method.

Four Ca-bentonitic clays from Alabama were evaluated for use in Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) or Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) fertilizer suspensions. The viscosity and gel strength of suspensions prepared with different proportions of a Western bentonite clay and sodium exchanged Alabama clays, were measured as a function of clay content and dispersant concentration. The results obtained suggested that three of the Alabama Ca-bentonites would replace about 40% of the more expensive Western bentonite in UAN and DAP fertilizer suspensions. The performance of the Na-modified clays, prepared according to the TVA soda ash method, was as good or even better than those observed for the Mg-, Na/Mg-or K-modified clays. The TVA clay modification procedure appears to be reliable and cost effective.

Pelletizing studies were conducted to find ways of improving the metallurgical properties of acid and fluxed pellets. In acid pellets, melting temperature was controlled by the formation of low melting temperature fayalite during reduction. Formation of a permeable metallic shell during reduction allows diffusion of reducing gas to the pellet core, decreasing fayalite formation. With fluxed pellets, slag chemistry had the main influence on metallurgical properties. Mineralogical, chemical and structural transformations that occur during reduction were studied at various intervals for a number of Mesabi Range pellet types. Six pellet types were selected for further investigation based on significant differences in softening/melting characteristics. Retention of porosity in the metallic shell was found to be the overriding factor in determining softening/melting behavior.

Geologic mapping was undertaken in the Sierrita Mountains as part of a Doctoral program at the University of Arizona, Tucson. During the study, approximately 35 square miles was mapped in detail, with particular attention given to specific areas of great or significant structural complexity and their relation to mineralization in the vicinity. A combination, of field studies and photogeologic interpretation was used in order to define regional and local structural controls for disseminated copper-molybdenum mineralization in and adjacent to the study area. Gratitude is expressed to the faculty of the University of Arizona, Department of Geology for their assistance in this work and to Bear Creek Mining Company for making numerous reports and drill cores available for study.

Until not so long ago most ring geared mills were operated with fix speed motors only. By using the latest generation of medium voltage frequency converters, new possibilities have arisen to improve the grinding process. Beside all the direct and indirect advantages, several dedicated functions have now been implemented for ring geared grinding mills in the minerals industry. The sophisticated operational functions ensure a smooth, safe and reliable operation with minimum stress for the mechanical equipment and therefore utmost availability of the mill. Several papers have already been presented concerning the benefits of using this state of the art technology for mill drives. Now this paper is focusing on the experiences gained with this kind of sophisticated ring geared mill drive system rather than only show and explains the operational benefit of the different functions. Several measurements of different operating conditions, starting, frozen charge remover, controlled roll back, backlash, etc., made on an installed and commissioned 2 x 5 MW dual pinion ring geared mill drive system will be shown and discussed. The accuracy of the load sharing between the two 5 MW motors during starting, normal operation and stopping will be demonstrated using real measurements from an operating system. Finally the inherent features of these drive systems are briefly discussed.
