"When most people think “miner,” they picture an older white man in a dusty shirt and suspenders. He’s holding a gas lamp and a pickaxe, peering at the walls of a dimly lit cavern. This image, while steeped in heritage, is no longer representative of what mining is: a global, increasingly diverse industry.It’s an industry made up of individuals like Zambian-born Chushi Mwewa, PE, president of Southlands Engineering, LLC in the United States and managing director of Southlands Engineering Limited in Zambia; Navajo tribe member Peter Denetclaw, manager of environmental programs and Navajo relations at Freeport-McMoRan; and Chinese and Jewish Alyssa Hom, a project engineer at McCarthy Building Companies.According to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economics, 168 out of the world’s 195 recognized countries have some mining or mineral resources activity, and the mining industry directly employs more than 25 million people across the globe.However, according to McKinsey & Company’s 2017 “Women in the Workplace” study, white males hold 67 percent of C-Suite positions and 70 percent of senior vice president positions in the corporate world, and mining is no different. This uniformity among leadership has been tied to lower levels of employee engagement, innovation and business growth. The bottom line is this: Diversity is good for business. The question industry leaders must now ask themselves is not “Will we promote diversity?” but “How will we promote diversity efficiently and permanently?”More than 80 industry professionals, consultants and students gathered to discuss this question and share stories at the “Developing Diversity in Mining” workshop organized by the University of Arizona’s Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources (IMR), held during the 2017 SME Arizona Conference in December 2017.Brad Ross, co-director of the IMR and one of the facilitators of the workshop, said he felt diversity was important to discuss because he has witnessed its benefits throughout his career in the mining industry.“By creating a team of people with different experiences and perspectives, a company is better equipped to see the big picture and to creatively tackle problems,” he said. Speakers from industry and academia,including Mwewa, Denetclaw and Hom discussed the challenges surrounding achieving diversity and inclusion as well as the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders."

Much has been published lately about the application of advanced control strategies in the automatic control of autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits. The application of adaptive control algorithms, self-tuning controllers, state estimation, and expert systems has been well documented. While these approaches can be very effective; experience has shown that quite often simply "fixing the fundamentals" can have a significant positive impact on overall grinding circuit performance. This paper will highlight the results of process optimization and process control work by the authors at a variety of autogenous and semi-autogenous installations. A review of one approach for quantifying the mill load/bearing pressure/power relationship is provided. Accurate monitoring of key mill process variables is a necessary prerequisite for both effective process analysis and process control. This paper discusses some of the concerns related to defining steady state operating conditions and the issues related to signal conditioning. The paper concludes with a discussion of an effective application of algorithmic constraint control which incorporates many of these considerations.

The 1,380 m (4,200 ft) long New Crystal Springs Bypass (Polhemus)Tunnel (NCSBT) will replace the existing Crystal Springs Bypass Pipeline. This tunnel project is part of the SFPUC’s $4.3 billion capital improvement program to repair and seismically upgrade their aging pipelines, tunnels, reservoirs and dams that provide drinking water to more than 2.4 million customers in the San Francisco Bay Area. This paper describes the development of the tunnel alignment and design, and the complex ground conditions of the Franciscan Mélange. Of particular interest is the challenge of tunneling with a possible downhill grade of 3%, a rigorous environmental process and incorporating the lessons learned from 1960s construction of the adjoining Crystal Springs Bypass Tunnel.

Surface mining of coal in the South developed into a major industry during the 1960's. The economic significance of the industry is much greater than is readily apparent when one considers only the value of the coal mined. The abun-dant supply of relatively inexpensive steam coal for electric power generation that has been derived from the surface mines has provided the foundation for the industrial expansion that has occurred throughout the South. The region, in gen-eral, has enjoyed the benefits of plentiful low cost electric power. However, re-cent political decisions, at all levels of government, threaten to destroy or severely curtail the surface mining of coal and eliminate the economic advantages once enjoyed by the region. These political decisions are rapidly changing the basic rules of operation and fundamental economics of surface coal mining. Recent changes, resulting from the enactment of environmental and health and safety laws and various bureaucratic rules and regulations, have had a three-fold effect: 1) Greatly increased operating cost, 2) increased lead times for mine development, 3) limited potential reserve base for future mining. Also current legislative proposals are casting a shadow of uncertainty over the future of all coal mining operations that has created serious delays and in-creased cost for the expansion of the coal industry necessary to meet our project independence goals. Technology Surface mining is the safest and most economical way to produce raw materials from the earth's crust. It also affords a more healthier working environment for the individual miner. INTRODUCTION The increasing price of gold and silver over the past 10 years has caused increasing activity in the exploration, evaluation and development of precious metals projects. Many of these deposits are relatively low grade and short lived which makes them economically sensitive to the major project variables such as metal price, capital cost, operating cost and of course, tonnage and grade. These deposits often have a high variability (a coefficient of variation -- o/u -- of 2 to 5) and an intermixing of ore and waste, making ac- curate ore reserve estimation difficult, especially when using traditional estimation techniques. Often, the estimation errors are not the 10-20% that we see in base metal deposits, but the errors in grade and tonnage can be as high as 50%, which can obviously have a very substantial impact on project Recent developments in geostatistics when coupled with a sound geologic under- standing of the deposit can significantly improve reserve estimates of these variable precious metals deposits. Examples will be given of actual deposits where the traditional estimates were significantly different from the mining reality. An attempt will be made to explain the applicable geostatistical tools with a minimum of geostatistical jargon and without complicated formulas. The key to improving the reserve estimates is a clear understanding of the deposit geology and especially the structural controls, the use of local estimation techniques that recognize the intermixing of ore and waste and the effect of selective mining on recoverable reserves, and the use of a global reserve estimation technique to check the results of local estimation. Geologic Controls The vast majority of gold and silver deposits being mined or developed in the western United States would be classified as epithermal deposits. These are formed by hydrothermal fluids (hot water) flowing upward through the rocks and depositing the precious metals as the fluids cool or reach areas of lower pressure or favorable chemical sites. These environments are similar to present day hot springs-type environments with some deposits being clearly associated with surface hot springs such as the Homestake McLaughlin deposit in northern California. These hydrothermal deposits can occur in sedimentary rocks resulting in deposits such as those of the Carlin district or the Jerritt Canyon deposit or the hydrothermal systems can occur in volcanic rocks forming deposits such as Round Mountain, Manhattan or Paradise Peak. The mechanisms of formation were similar in either case with the solution flow controlled by geologic structure and precious metals deposited when the conditions of temperataure, pressure and chemical environment were favorable. The gold and silver hearing solutions travel through permeable faults and fracture systems depositing the metals along these channels. The grades are often highest in the central parts of these conduits (veins) with lower grades in the surrounding rocks. An understanding of the nature, distribution and orientation of these plumbing systems is important to a realistic reserve estimate. The point to be emphasized here is that, good, sound geology in the form of geologic mapping, logging of rotary chip samples and a few carefully logged core holes can signifi- cantly improve an ore reserve estimate.

The purpose of the Sustainable Aggregates Planning in South East Europe (SNAP-SEE, SEE/D/0167/2.4/X) project is to develop a Toolbox for Aggregates Planning to assist governments and stakeholders in national, regional, primary and secondary, aggregates planning in southeast European countries. The Toolbox comprises documents on stakeholder consultation, data and analysis methodologies, a vision of best practices in aggregates planning and how to build an aggregates plan. The Toolbox will also support ongoing efforts to enhance minerals policy in the European Union (EU) as called for by the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials. NMBGMR has been collecting data on uranium mining districts, mines and mills since it was created in 1927 and has converted years of historical data into a relational database that can be imported in ArcMap. The database includes information on mining districts, mines, mills, geochemistry, photographs, and bibliography. The available data includes location, production, reserves, geologic, geochemical, resource potential, and other data. The NURE stream-sediment data provides geochemical analyses for >27,000 samples collected in New Mexico during 1970s. The NURE hydrogeochemical data provides analyses for water samples. ArcMap includes location of individual ore bodies as polygons and incorporates the mines and NURE data as individual site locations. The purposes of these databases are to provide computerized data that will aid in identifying and evaluating resource potential, resource development and management, production, and possible environmental concerns, such as physical hazards (i.e. hazardous mine openings), indoor radon, regional exposure to radiation from the mines, background geochemical data and point-sources of possible pollution in areas of known mineral deposits.

At the, Crescent Valley Mine of the Hanna Coal Company, several 10,000 ton unit trains of 41" x 0 strip coal are loaded per week during the lake season. This is accomplished without the use of any accumulation of prepared coal. A large raw coal pile is built up during the winter months adjacent to two truck dump bins. This is added to whenever trucks are coming in from the pits and trains are not being loaded. During the loading of trains, trucks from several pits dump into the truck hoppers and coal is also dozed in from the pile. At a rate up to 3200 tons per hour this coal is screened, the plus 6" hand picked, the plus 4" crushed, and' all weighed and sampled as it goes directly to railroad cars being handled on two tracks by car retarders. With such an arrangement it is possible to exercise some control over coal quality, if it can be assessed rapidly. For instance, if the moisture rises to a level where it seems probable the BTU per pound will be reduced to the point where the contract calls for penalties, the trucks from, the wettest pit may be stopped, more or less coal may be moved in from the stockpile, or other measures taken to assure that the average BTU of the trainload will be satisfactory.

Introduction Autogenous, semi-autogenous, and conventional grinding circuits are used to process ores. Current emphasis, though, is towards the use of the first two systems. The reason is the generally lower initial investment required for an autogenous or semi-autogenous circuit as compared to a conventional comminution circuit. However, the effect of operating costs that will significantly affect overall comminution economics is not considered in this evaluation. About 70% of the energy in a mineral processing plant is used in the comminution circuit. Until the 1974 oil embargo, energy was relatively inexpensive. Since that time, the cost of energy has escalated 40-fold. As a result, energy cost now forms a significant portion of operating costs in comminution. According to a survey conducted by General Electric Co. (Powers, 1982), the price of electricity will continue to rise 15% to 20% per year, in spite of the current oil glut. Both autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits consume more energy than the conventional comminution circuit. Higher consumption ranging from 16% to 35% has been reported in the literature (Bassarear, 1982; Gjerdrum. 1979; Betts, 1982; and Christie, 1979). Consequently, even a small increase in energy costs is likely to have a significant impact on operating costs. Therefore, the economic decision of selecting an optimal comminution circuit is important. More than ever before, it is now critical to include in the evaluation of communition circuits not only the capital costs, but also the operating costs; in particular, the expected energy cost over the life of the operation. Failure to do this may lead to a less than optimal comminution circuit. Design A comminution system should be designed only after bench-scale or pilot plant testing of a representative sample. Conventional crushing and grinding circuits can be designed on the basis of the Bond Work Index (Rowland and Kjos, 1980). Over the years, sizing of full-scale rod and ball mills from Bond Work Index data has become well established. Autogenous and semi-autogenous mills cannot be sized based on bench-scale tests. Pilot plant tests are necessary to determine the amenability of the ore, critical size buildup, and power requirements. For this study, conventional and semi-autogenous grinding circuits were designed for ore throughput of 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 90 kt/d (13,200, 26,400, 39,600, 52,000, 79,200, and 99,000 stpd). Rod and ball mills were scaled up on the basis of the Bond Work Index. A two-stage semi-autogenous grinding circuit was designed on the basis of pilot plant test results. "Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest difference. In the world of mining, erosion can lead to small cracks, which can then lead to bigger problems that, over time, can eventually lead to a catastrophic event. However, when managed correctly, as in the case of the Manefey Slide at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, the damage can be minimized.Numerous industry conferences, technical papers, studies and resources are dedicated to these issues each year, but what is sometimes overlooked is how the erosion of personal ethics can also have life-changing effects.At the 2019 SME Minnesota Conference, April 15-17 in Duluth, MN, two inmates serving their respective prison sentences at the U.S. Federal Prison Camp in Duluth spoke to the conference about how small cracks in their ethical foundations grew over time, eventually leading each man to his new address at the minimum-security facility.The men’s full names were not released and they were introduced as Jeff and Tony. Other than the matching green uniforms, both middle-aged men could have fit in with the rest of the crowd. They are well-educated and articulate whose career paths eroded thanks to greed and careless decisions.Tony, a licensed professional engineer, enjoyed a successful career working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense. Jeff is a former senior vice president of investments who ran a well-respected investment management team. Both spoke openly about the mistakes they made and emphasized that their crimes were not flagrant violations of the black and white rules but grew from ethical violations that live in the gray area between black and white, and right and wrong.Working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), Tony said he was befriended by a wealthy man who was generous with his money. As Tony told it, a few meals with this man led to a few trips to casinos and eventually to gifts of money. The donor did not ask for anything in return, and at the time, Tony said he did not think that he was doing anything wrong. He admits now that the perception of a high-ranking officer in the DOD accepting gifts is not a good one, as it could be construed as the donor might have been trying to gain favor for future contracts; which is how it was presented in court by the prosecution team."

In recent years, slabs with a rough surface have captured a large share of the ornamental stone market. However, the main technologies used for this type of treatment are based on mechanical shock (bush-hammering) or thermal treatment (flaming or flame-finishing). These traditional technologies are widely used, but have many limitations that decrease their usefulness. The purpose of this study was to develop a technology that enhances the natural colors of the rock and produces a rough surface without compromising its mechanical characteristics, in contrast to traditional technologies. This report shows the technical, economic and aesthetic results obtained with a new water-jet treatment and compares it with competing technologies.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) system utilization is a critical factor for predicting machine performance. The process of estimating machine performance, including rate of penetration (ROP) and machine utilization (U) must incorporate an understanding of site geology, TBM specifications and site management. The study herein presents a preliminary analysis of the different activity time and downtime components from hard rock TBMs at two project sites to evaluate their impact on machine utilization. A comparison of crew experience, first between shifts and then between projects is included to analyze its effect on utilization and downtime. This work presents the sensitivity of the utilization factor to selected activities in the projects and the impact of geology and site set-up/logistics on machine performance.

Atlantic Richfield Company began operating a commercial uranium solution mining project in April, 1975 in Live Oak County, 10 miles southwest of the town of George West (Figure 1). The operation is designed to produce 250,000 pounds of U303 per year and is jointly owned by Atlantic Richfield Company, Dalco and U. S. Steel. The proprietary process employed in this operation consists of injecting an alkaline leaching solution into the ore-bearing formation through a pattern of injection wells. The uranium-bearing solution is then removed through producing wells using submersible pumps in central production wells. The produced solution is pumped through a pipeline to the plant area where the uranium is extracted. The barren solution is refurbished and returned to the pattern area for reinjection. The injection field and plant site are located in the drainage of Spring Creek, a small intermittent stream tributary to the Nueces River. Land use in the area is primarily agricultural -- cattle ranching and farming -- but several producing gas fields are present in the areas as well.

The ninth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Minneapolis, MN. A total of 33 students presented their work at the contest. The competition began in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes. The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the contest. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and, as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates, and the prizes are designated accordingly. At the graduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third through seventh $200 each, and all others $125 each. At the undergraduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250, and all others $125 each.

Air pollution control in primary aluminum smelter . Various processes are known for air pollution in electrolysis plants. Mainly two systems have to be taken into consideration: -Treatment of concentrated gases collected directly from hooded pots. This is normally achieved by either dry or wet process. This is not the object of this paper as these processes have been already described. -Treatment of low concentrated fumes. A certain amount of gaseous and solid fluoride (35 % of total fluor pollution) goes out of the hooded pot. Gases commonly called secondary fumes are generally treated by wet process. The object of 'this paper is to describe two plants with specific treatment for secondary fumes. 1/ A plant in operation in Vlissingen (Netherlands) for PECHINEY. 2/ Presentation of tests carried out by a specialized Company. The results of such tests have been used for the design of the scrubbers presently under construction for ALUMINIO ESPANOL San Ciprian (Spain).

Introduction Trends of successful discovery technology and psychology emerge from a thoughtful study of various companies' exploration programs. These subjective patterns can be generalized into groups of factors for discussion. Here, for convenience, factors that influence exploration success are separated into management and geologic concerns. Most successful discoveries have a demonstrably favorable management combined with a technically competent geologic input. Both are required. But the management input is decisive. Management factors include the correct definition of management's role; cost of exploration; time needed for exploration; commodity selection; and the fostering of autonomy, creativity, and confidence in the geology department. Geologic factors include imaginative technical competence (field as well as academic), correct development and use of empirical exploration or prospecting models, and dedication. Success comes to those entities that are properly managed and have technological competence. A management team that directs a company's business has been compared to a dynasty. The dynasty lays out policy and follows up with appropriate action. In that management's power is pervasive, the term is appropriate. Management's role is, however, more important. Many examples can be cited where the geologic input was impeccable. But management somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, and the exploration success was turned to a third party's profit. Management Factors Management's role can be broadly generalized to four parts. These are to identify the commodities it seeks, define its part in the exploration process, develop a functioning exploration department, and have the desire to succeed. It must have confidence in its geologists and delegate to them the authority and responsibility they need to operate successfully. Head office management cannot do the thinking for a field staff thousands of kilometers away. There is no substitute for confidence and delegation of authority. Successes came to those who had the freedom to act. Motivation is a management requisite. Management's role is to prevent destructive, internecine political battles within the corporate structure. Most large US mining corporations have well known histories of political strife that have damaged their exploration efforts. Management's role must, above all, include the desire to succeed. There are cases where management has been confronted with a commercial exploration success, but their reaction is to request additional study or exploration. Perhaps the problem of bringing a commercial find into production is beyond their capabilities. But a bona fide discovery sent back for additional work commonly is lost due to that management. The cost of exploration is a factor that management must accept. A variety of studies made during the past 40 years shows the cost per discovery to be $25 million, $38 million, $200 million, or even $290 million. These figures are derived by dividing the total exploration expenditure by the number of discoveries. However, successful management dynasties have a much lower cost per discovery during their management regime. Asarco, from 1948 through 1963, had one of the lowest cost discovery rates in the world. Duval Corp., from 1948 through 1968, had comparably low discovery costs. Placer Development, from 1955, was equally successful. Western Mining in Australia has had one of the longest lived dynasties associated with exploration success. Time is vital in exploration success. Most successful exploration case histories stress sufficient time in project exploration so that the target is well tested. A large target cannot always be adequately evaluated by a few holes (strat or concept testing). Serendipity helps in exploring large targets, but it best operates in a lengthy program. Numerous case histories include pleasant surprises. But these came mostly after the 10th hole. Commodity markets are important factors governing exploration success. Management's decision to explore for a specific commodity can doom its effort if that product suffers from severe oversupply. Florida produced more than eighty percent of domestic phosphate during 1974. This amounted to more than thirty-five million short tons. Ninety percent of this production was used in the production of fertilizers. Other uses of phosphate include food preservatives, fabric dyes, optical glass, photographic films, soaps, plastics, pharmaceuticals and animal feed ingredients. Marketable phosphate rock projections for the nest decade forecast a very healthy growth for the Florida phosphate industry. Associated with the expansion, however, are the corresponding problems of water conservation, air and water pollution and land reclamation. Recognizing mining as an interim land use, the industry is presently engaged in a very active reclamation program. The proximity of the central Florida deposits to rapidly developing urban areas makes it important to undertake successful and well planned reclamation programs. Water use and conservation is of vitil importance to the industry. Water withdrawal from existing aquifers and discharges into drainage systems are closely regulated by state agencies. Water is stored and recycled to maximize usage. In some instances water is even returned to major aquifers through a series of recharge or connector wells. The phosphate industry has spent over 200 million dollars in the past decade for research, development and implementation of pollution abatement and water conservation systems.1 The following discussion outlines various phases of phosphate mining in central Florida today, with emphasis on research in waste disposal techniques and progressive land reclamation programs.

The Dallas Mill Creek Drainage Relief Tunnel is an 8.04 km (5 mile) tunnel that will provide 100-year flood protection for impacted neighborhoods in the east Dallas area. “Big Tex” is a main beam gripper TBM capable of changing diameters in mid-tunnel to excavate 2.83 km (9,290 ft) of 11.45 m (37.58 ft) diameter tunnel and 5.21 km (17,095 LF) of 9.93 m (32.58 ft) diameter tunnel. Construction began in April 2018 and is anticipated to be completed in 2024. This paper will discuss the challenges and lessons learned during assembly and re-assembly, start-up and mining with “Big Tex.”

Introduction The US has the largest total (364 Gt, or 401 billion st) and recoverable (182 Gt, or 201 billion st) coal reserves in the world (Steam/Its Generation and Use, 1978). However, progressive coal use in this country has been hampered by environmental constraints, such as restrictions on sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate emissions. Since the promulgation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), it has become apparent that all US coals will require sulfur removal to comply with the new sulfur dioxide emission levels. If more stringent emission standards are imposed, through pending acid rain legislation or amendments to the Clean Air Act, it is likely that the coal industry, and the industrial and utility sectors will look increasingly toward the development of new and advanced coal cleaning technologies to continue and promote the use of coal. Table 1 summarizes the EPA NSPS for sulfur dioxide emissions. Fortunately, the basis for determining sulfur dioxide removal is the Btu and total sulfur content of the run-of-mine coal. Thus, credit is given for any sulfur removed before combustion, e.g., through physical coal cleaning. Unfortunately, physical coal cleaning alone may be unable to produce a compliance coal with respect to the EPA NSPS. Therefore, all industrial and utility coal-fired boilers will require post combustion gas cleanup, e.g., flue gas desulfurization (FGD), to comply with the new regulations. Of these, chemical coal cleaning offers the advantages of providing (1) high quality fuel for combustion (low sulfur and ash, high Btu, and attenuated product variability); (2) a solid fuel product for use in retrofitted gas and oil boilers; and (3) a solid fuel product with multiple end uses, e.g., internal combustion engines, carbon electrodes, coke, or chemical feedstock. Gravimelt process In the Gravimelt process, 1.4 mm x 0 (14 mesh x 0), physically beneficiated coal of about 5% moisture is fed into a 3401 to 3901 C (644 ° to 734 ° F) molten bath of sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. Organic and pyritic sulfur and most of the mineral matter in coal react with and are dissolved in a molten mixture of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. The reacted coal sulfur is converted to alkali sulfides and polysulfides, whereas the mineral matter is apparently converted to alkali-aluminum silicates and other byproducts that are water and acid soluble. Coal residence time is 60 to 240 minutes. The sodium hydroxide to potassium hydroxide ratio is about 9:1. The total hydroxide-to-coal ratio is no less than 10:1. The specific gravity of the caustic melt is about 1.8 g/cm3 . Thus, coal is buoyant in the bath, and insoluble mineral matter with density greater than 1.8 g/cm3 would sink. Reacted coal is first water-washed with an equal weight volume of water in a countercurrent mode of operation. The coal is filtered and the filtrate sent for regeneration. The coal is then acid-washed in 10% sulfuric acid. The acid-water/coal mixture is filtered to recover the final coal product, and the filtrate treated with lime to precipitate dissolved mineral matter. The precipitate is filtered from the mixture and discarded. The water is recycled to the plant. Filtrate from water-washing is treated to remove sodium sulfide. The sodium sulfide is chemically treated to produce hydrogen sulfide, calcium car¬bonate, sodium hydroxide, and other products. The hydrogen sulfide is treated to produce sulfuric acid for the acid-washing step. The calcium carbonate is treated further or discarded, and the sodium hydroxide is concentrated by evaporation and recycled to the reactor. The Gravimelt process is currently at the bench-scale stage of development. A 0.9-kg (2-lb) continuous reactor is in operation with a continuous water- and acid-washing section adjacent. The regeneration section is not developed to a meaningful extent, although key reactions have been tested in the laboratory. Process conditions, product recovery efficiencies, etc., however, have not been determined adequately and continuous regeneration operation has not been attempted. Work is now in progress to develop each section to a continuous bench-scale operation in processing coal at 9.1 kg/h (20 lb per hr). Microwave process The carbon and hydrogen in coal are relatively transparent to microwave radiation. However, water, caustic, pyrite, and other mineral matter components are strong conductors of microwave radiation energy at the proper frequency. As a result, selective heating of the noncarbonaceous materials occurs that enables the chemical reaction of sulfur and ash with caustic. Although very high temperatures may result from
