The sulfur dioxide emitted in low concentrations in flue gases from the combustion of sulfur-containing coals and fuel oils is a significant factor in contamination of the atmosphere with sulfur dioxide. A review of methods for treating gases containing high concentrations of sulfur dioxide shows that they are seldom satisfactory for purifying flue gases. Processes developed specifically for treating flue gases using liquid absorbents are costly and may cause localized pollution, because the cooled flue gases can settle in the vicinity of the stack. Bench-scale research is being conducted to investigate the use of dry absorbents for sulfur dioxide removal at temperature levels of about 250°- 300° F. and 600°-650° F. Alkalized alumina has been found effective for treating simulated flue gas and Is regenerable by hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or producer gas. Other metallic oxides have been tested as absorbents also. Chemically impregnated activated carbons removed sulfur dioxide from the gas at 265° F. Vanadium pentoxide is effective as a catalyst for oxidizing of sulfur dioxide in the simulated flue gas at temperatures lower than have been used commercially for gases with higher concentrations of sulfur dioxide. Conversions of sulfur dioxide to trioxide wore studied as a function of temp- erature over a range of about 570° to 750° F.

Fuzzy logic and neural networks are new technologies being applied in many areas of engineering and business. While it is not always clear which kinds of problems are best suited to these technologies, and which problems are best approached with more standard methodologies, both fuzzy logic and neural networks appear to show great promise in the field of control systems. This paper demonstrates two advantages that these technologies offer: Easy controller design in the absence of a mathematical model of the plant to be controlled, and adaptive control capable of quickly responding to changes in the plant.

During the 1920's, approximately 11,000 small gasifiers were in operation in the United States. They converted about 15 million tons of coal per year into low Btu gas. In some cases, hot raw gas was used for applications such as firing open hearth furnaces or brick kilns. In other cases the gases produced in the gasifiers were cooled, cleaned and desulfurized for various utility and industrial purposes. The steel industry was by far the largest user. The most important fact was that the conversion of coal to a usable fuel gas was demonstrated to be commercial. During the late 1940's and early 1950's, this form of energy was largely replaced by natural gas as the pipeline net work was expanded. Producer gas was no longer economically competitive. Over the past twenty-five (25) years, government controls on the interstate price of natural gas have maintained this situation. At present only three commercial small coal gasifier plants are still in operation in the United States. These facilities are operated by the Glen-Gery Corporation which is located in eastern Pennsylvania; the National Lime and Stone Company which is located at Carey Ohio; and Holston Defense Corporation which is located at Kingsport, Tennessee. There are, however, numerous operating gasifiers in other parts of the world. Recent events indicate that this situation is changing. The quantity of domestic natural gas available to the interstate market has been declining at the same time that demand for all forms of energy has been increasing. The current potential market for gas with a heating value ranging from 100 to 500 Btu per cubic feet has been estimated at sixteen (16) quads (16 x 1015 Btu) per year. This is expected to grow to twenty (20) quads by the year 2000.

The purpose of the panel's examination of coal mining research and development is to explore how the various groups that make up this research community might work together more efficiently and be more productive. The community, as defined here, includes federal and state governments, coal producers, manufacturers, unions, universities, and industry sponsored research organizations. The framework chosen for these discussions consists of brief presentations by the panel members on their views of the proper role and function of the group they represent. The panel members were also asked to highlight the economic, technical and institutional constraints that affect the performance of research and development and the use of the results. Following these presentations, a number of prepared questions will be discussed by the panel, and audience participation is invited. These questions were given several weeks ago to the panel members for their study. Before proceeding with the panel member reports, a brief review of the importance of R&D to the coal mining industry would be helpful to setting the stage for a constructive dialogue. It is appropriate to begin this review by mentioning that there is complete agreement among the research community that the major goals are: Improve health and safety Protect the environment Increase capital and labor productivity Increase resource recovery Since the basic functions of the academic, industrial and government sectors are different, we should expect that the research and development objectives and priorities, roles and responsibilities under each major goal will be different for each research group. The differences do not represent problem areas. However, problems will arise if the objectives are not properly interfaced at the appropriate time. The consequences of railing to understand the need for integrated programs will be the classic result, best described by the phrase --"a technical success but a commercial failure."

"The Gateway Trans-Hudson Partnership (GTHP), a joint venture of WSP USA, Inc., AECOM USA, Inc, and STV Incorporated, is providing preliminary engineering services to Amtrak for the Hudson Tunnel project as well as supporting the NEPA process for getting the record of decision (ROD). This preliminary engineering design effort by GTHP includes geotechnical exploration and laboratory testing, design of structures, tunnel contract packaging and procurement planning.The Hudson Tunnel Project includes the construction of a new Hudson River Tunnel system and rehabilitation of the existing North River Tunnel. The new tunnel system will be constructed south of the existing North River Tunnel, from North Bergen under the Palisades to Hoboken in New Jersey, below the Hudson River, and connecting directly to Penn Station in New York (Fig. 1). The tunnel system is configured as two single-track tubes, intermediate ventilation shafts and cross passages in compliance with NFPA- 130 requirements. The adjacent surface alignment west of the Palisades will be constructed on viaducts, embankment and retained fills. The existing North River Tunnel (Fig. 2) consists of two single-track, electrified rail tunnels extending from tunnel portals in North Bergen, New Jersey to Penn Station in New York. Completed in 1910 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the tunnel opened at the same time as Penn Station and the four, single-track, East River tunnels that connect Penn Station to Queens and onto Long Island and New England, respectively. Both tunnels in the existing North River Tunnel were inundated with brackish river water during Superstorm Sandy (Fig. 3), resulting in the cancellation of all Amtrak and NJ Transit service into New York City for five days. After the brackish water was removed from the tunnels, the residual chlorides and sulfates have had on-going detrimental impacts on the interior concrete and rail systems."

"On-site research and development as well as in-situ testing are key factors to the successful implementation of new mining equipment and technology. Unfortunately the demands and necessities of research and development often conflict with the reality of mine production in operational mines, especially during early stages of research and development and the initial testing of new equipment. Several experimental mines under university supervision attend to this problem and provide a close-to- reality testing environment for the mining industry and mining equipment manufacturers. This paper gives an overview of the design and organization of such an underground testing area as well as of the wide range of possible operations it can facilitate at the example of the FLB Experimental and Teaching Mine (Forschungs- und Lehrbergwerk) at Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg, the central European underground research mine. INTRODUCTION As well as the Mining Engineering education follows the same pattern worldwide, the tasks and duties to be fulfilled by engineers in the productive mines are comparable around the globe. This also holds true for the technologies and equipment needed, both in surface and underground mines. Almost all mining equipment brands are being distributed worldwide. The tasks and challenges of guaranteeing an ever- increasing productivity at the mines, while simultaneously maintaining, respectively improving, safety standards, also in the developing countries and emerging economies, requests a constant development, improvement and adaption both of the engineering education and of R&D in technology and equipment. The increasing safety requirements at the mines, in combination with also increasing safety and liability policies, do often not allow a proper practical education of mining engineering students. At the same time, new technologies and equipment to be deployed / brought to the mines have to be fully functional in a production operation from the very first moment. Time losses like break-down time or even repair and maintenance breaks are often costly and, even when expected up to a certain degree with newly developed machines, have a wider negative impact on the neighboring operations and operations within that mine, thus often being unacceptable within the ongoing production process and extremely costly."

"Location. The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in' the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. The transportation of solids by slurry pipeline is a rapidly growing field. Although early patents date from the latter part of the nineteenth century, it has only been within the last twenty years that successful long distance slurry transport lines have come into their own. The pioneering efforts in this country include the gilsonite slurry pipeline from Bonanza, Utah, to Grand Junction, Colorado, and the coal slurry pipeline from Cadiz to Cleveland, Ohio. Both of these lines were constructed in 1957 and had a combined annual capacity of about 360 million ton miles. Although the Cadiz pipeline was mothballed in the early 1960's, the interest in slurry transport systems continues to increase and one engineering and construction company is predicting that by 1980 an annual slurry system rate of more than eight billion ton miles will be achieved. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple when contrasted against the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve our understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instance more of an art than a science. Fire accident is one of the most classic safety concerns in underground mines both in the USA and abroad. It may occur from pool fires due to leakages in hose or pipes, vehicle fires, or fires in tires and conveyor belts in the underground mines. It may also result from the storage of flammable materials such as gasoline, diesel, and explosives in the underground. When fire occurs in an underground mine, it releases heat, smoke, and other toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, and methane to the surrounding thereby making life unbearable to the miners. Furthermore, smoke greatly impact visibility in the underground which makes evacuation even more onerous and challenging. To this end, a thorough investigation of fire behavior and spread of toxic gases in a practical underground mine is imperative to develop a reliable emergency evacuation plan in an event of fire disaster in the underground mine. The objective of this study is to investigate temperature variation and CO spread along mine airways by conducting full-scale fire experiment in the underground mine. The results presented from this study are crucial to developing evacuation plans in underground mines. In addition, the findings from this study could be used to validate existing evacuation models.

The knowledge-based expert systems (KBES) is a potentially powerful technique to the mining engineer in traditional areas of mine design and operations, as well as in the emerging areas of mining automation and robotics. Since KBES is still experimental in many respects, caution must be exercised as this "high tech" tool is developed and applied to mining. The objective of this paper is to demystify expert systems by introducing the elements of KBES, discussing the strengths and weaknesses, and identifying some areas of application in mining, based on the authors' experiences.

"In order to protect public safety in the event of a deliberate fire attack, underground rail authorities are increasingly considering the need to design for arson-initiated fire scenarios. Where typical design fires for modern rolling stock mean a peak fire size is reached after 12 minutes, an arson-initiated fire reaches its peak within 2-3 minutes. We present the innovations required to successfully incorporate this requirement on a recent design-build project. In stations 3D modelling is used to optimise smoke reservoir designs, smoke chimneys, station boxes and tunnel geometry to allow coordination with structural requirements. In tunnels, novel coupling of one dimensional network modelling and 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to improve assessment of complex fire scenarios. Finally, the impact on tunnel structures is assessed through comparison with standard time-temperature curves and risk of explosive spalling. INTRODUCTION An increasing regulatory environment and the appreciable influence that terrorist incidents have had on public safety policy have motivated the need to protect against large arson fires, especially in civil structures and public transport systems. With a greater reliance of a growing urban population on underground subway systems, design of such infrastructure is continually being reassessed and developed worldwide. Underground rail authorities are paying increased consideration to the design of fires - with properties beyond the upper regions of growth and intensity - amongst arson fire studies. Use of fire hardened materials on modern rolling stock means fires caused accidentally can be expected to develop relative slowly. However, recent experiments involving large initiating fires (as would result from an arson attack) have shown rapid fire growth rates and flashover leading to greater maximum heat release rates, Hadjisophocleous (2012), White (2010), and Lönnermark, et al. (2015). This paper describes the challenges and innovations required to complete a detailed design to control smoke from such aggressive super-fast growing fires. Computational modelling is used to demonstrate the required smoke control design by configuring the mechanical exhaust system combined with careful coordination with the architectural and structural design. The design objectives are to provide tenable egress paths in accordance with NFPA 130 (2014) and fire-fighting access. Finally, analysis of the design fire is used to inform the tunnel lining design, reducing the risk of explosive spalling, protecting the asset in the event of a severe fire."

Electronic detonators have been in commercial use for a decade, with an excellent safety record. This paper lists known incidents involving electronic detonators. Typical standards required by regulatory bodies for static electricity and electromagnetic fields are reviewed. The performance of some detonators is compared to these standards; in general the minimum standards are easily exceeded. The general resistance of electronic detonators to extraneous electrical energy that can be derived from the body of test results is compared to danger levels for exposure of humans to these energies; it is shown that electronic detonators can safely tolerate higher electrical energies than people can. This comparison includes comparable data for electric detonators, which are shown to be more vulnerable to extraneous electrical energy than people are. Electronic detonators also bring significant safety benefits in blasting due to their testability, two-way communications, reliability, programmability and precision. The links between these attributes and enhanced safety are discussed with examples from actual blasting. Although electronic detonators are usually more vulnerable to extraneous electricity than non-electric initiation systems, the paper shows that the net safety benefit in handling and blasting is in favor of electronic detonators, which are the safest initiation system that has ever been offered to the mining industry.

The four most important parameters controlling the flow of gas in coal are the gas content, permeability, diffusion coefficient and cleat characteristics. Estimates of these and, more importantly, a knowledge about the variation in their values over time are required for simulation of long-term gas production. This paper describes experimental techniques to determine each of these, along with their time dependency, under simulated in situ conditions. It is shown that the permeability, diffusion coefficient and the cleat aperture values are not constant as usually assumed to be. There is a significant variation in their values as a result of changes in the microstructure of coal associated with release and flow of gas.

I welcome this opportunity to appear before you and to review briefly the various health and safety services of the Bureau of Mines available to the mining industry, other than coal, and also to tell of our plans for extending these services to improve safety and health conditions. The Bureau's health and safety activities are basically services by which we attempt to develop and disseminate information on improved techniques in mine accident prevention and promote mine safety education in the mineral industries. Unfortunately, some mining companies, particularly some of the smaller operations, seem to be unfamiliar with these services, The Bureau of Mines is charged by law with the responsibility for inspecting coal mines; other services to the coal mining industry and are provided only on request, Safety inspections and other services that we offer are provided for noncoal mining industries solely upon request.

Tremendous strides have been made in front end loaders in the last fifteen years. Fifteen years ago a 2; cubic yard front end loader was the largest standard machine you could purchase. Today there are two commercially available 15 yard front end loaders and many 10 yard front end loaders. The estimated total worldwide market for all front end loaders over one cubic yard has increased to over 30,000 units yearly. The trend for front end loaders, in general, and for the mining market, in particular, is to larger and larger loaders. Today there are 18 cubic yard and a 24 cubic yard front end loader in prototype form. It is not inconceivable that within another fifteen years that there will be front end loaders in the 50 cubic yard class with design features quite different from today's. These larger loaders are being designed at the demand of the mining industry and the design criteria are being directed at this market area. The costs of these larger loaders will be greater per unit of capacity, and it is the intent of the various manufacturers that they will be more reliable, be easier to service, give greater availability, live longer, and cost less to maintain, than previous loaders. It is also the intent of the manufacturers to compete directly with the large mining shovel as the front end loaders become appropriately larger and more reliable. There has been some trend in this direction in the past with smaller shovels and loaders. In Figure No. 1 are data for U.S. production of front end loaders (5-6 cubic yard class and 10 cubic yard class) and U.S. production of cable operation, crawler mounted power shovels, draglines and cranes (1; to 5 cubic yard class) for the years 1965 and 1970. The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel, Burrard Inlet Crossing project for the Greater Vancouver Water District entails deep shaft construction, subway sized pressurized face tunneling through highly variable ground conditions, installation of three permanent steel water mains and construction of elaborate valve chambers adjacent to either shaft. The paper discusses key elements of the planning and implementation of 6.69 m Ø slurry mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) assembly in a small diameter deep shaft including incorporation of a fully pressurized launch lock, preparations for saturation diving, surface support infrastructure and initial mining sequence.

The aphorism that provided the title of this paper is probably a couple of hundred years old, but it still expresses a fundamental truth in the metals industry. This truth will be illustrated through a brief review of the major developments in the extractive metallurgy of the oxidized ores of nickel - the "laterite" ores. While the details to be discussed are for the most part specific to nickel, a close parallel with other commodities - particularly in recent years - will be apparent even to those whose interest in nickel itself is slight. Thus it is hoped that this paper will be stimulating, at the least, to anyone who is concerned with the implementation of process improvement, "Invention" in the present context means any change from "conventional" process technology that shows a reasonable chance of reducing costs, increasing revenues, or both, in the production of a commodity. This can be anything from a simple rearrangement of flowsheet steps to a completely different basis for processing. And the result may reduce costs by more efficient use of energy or labor or reagents; may increase revenues by better recovery of the primary product or by introducing the recovery of previously ignored by-products; may insure sales volume (and thereby cash flow) through higher product purity or an improved product form. "Necessity" is the perceived need to attain at least one of these classes of results. This perception of necessity, however, varies widely from management to management and from project to project.

"The Teck Highland Valley copper (THVC) mine is located approximately 55 km (34 miles) southwest of Kamloops and approximately 20 km (12 miles) west of Logan Lake, BC, Canada (Fig. 1). Mining at THVC is conducted at three openpit operations comprised of Valley, Lornex and Highmont with a total annual output on the order of 300 kt (330,000 st) copper concentrate and 5 kt (5,500 st) of molybdenum concentrate. The Phase 8 pushback in the Valley Pit (Fig. 2) was mined from 2011 to 2016. Successful slope steepening occurred in the later stage of the pushback with the implementation of presplit blasting in 2015 and 2016.This article summarizes the investigation and design approach including: structural analysis, kinematic assessments of bench breakback potential, development of discrete fracture networks (DFNs) to characterize discontinuity fabric, rockfall modelling, 2D anisotropic limit equilibrium and 2D distinct element modelling, assessment of potential kinematic failure modes affecting double benches with 3D distinct element modelling and improved blasting techniques using e-dets. THVC is currently undertaking a mine life expansion involving the pushback of the west wall of the Valley Pit above Phase 8 to extend the mine life to 2029. Engineering geologyThe east wall slope in the Valley Pit is comprised of a 350-m (1,148-ft) thick sequence of glacial valley sediments that occur along the Highland Valley (Fig. 2), exposing an overburden slope up to about 225-m (740-ft) high below the crest of the ultimate east wall. The glacial overburden units consist of pro-glacial outwash and glaciofluvial deposits, glacial outwash sands and gravels interbedded with till and alluvial fans consisting of cross-bedded sands and sandy-gravels. Lacustrine sediments occur within the mid to lower portion of the glacial sequence and contain intervals of low-shear-strength clays and silts. Two large (1.3 and 7 Mt or 1.4 and 7.7 million st) waste rock buttresses were required to maintain slope stability using slot-cut and fill mining methods, as described in Fortin et al. (2011).The Valley porphyry deposit occurs in the central portion of the late Upper Triassic Guichon Creek Batholith, which intrudes assemblages of the Permian Cache Creek and Upper Triassic Nicola groups. The Valley deposit occurs in an area of intense fracturing near the intersection of the northerly trending Lornex Fault and the northwest to westerly trending Highland Valley Fault."

Six decades ago, the most dangerous job in the USA was mining coal underground. Roof falls were responsible for half of the deaths, killing about 100 miners every year. Fast forward to 2016 and zero roof fall fatalities. Just three miners were killed by roof falls during the following 6 years. How did the mining community achieve this historic goal? This paper starts by analyzing the roof fall fatalities in 1968, categorizing them by their fundamental cause. Then, it shows how each type of roof fall was reduced over time, using snapshots of the fatalities occurring in subsequent decades. Along the way, it evaluates the influence of the regulatory environment, changing mining methods, and better ground control technology. The study found that in 1968 more than half of roof fall fatalities at large mines were attributable to an inadequate safety culture. The immediate effect of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act was to reduce the riskiest activities, like needlessly going under unsupported roof. Other hazards, like large roof falls, required technological developments before they were brought under control. Roof Control Plans, which the US Bureau of Mines had been advocating since the 1920s, played a significant role throughout the process.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies, including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training.
