Slurry viscosity ultimately affects the majority of mineral extraction processes. However, to date its role has been disguised because mineral processing equipment has been conservatively designed to operate at minimal slurry viscosity. With most ores this still meant acceptable solids concentration was achieved. However, with the advent of treatment of weathered ores the resulting higher slurry viscosity (rheology) has meant solids concentration has had to be reduced, often to unacceptable levels. To permit operation at higher solids concentration chemical dispersants are employed. These dispersants are expensive and their addition should be controlled. Slurry Systems Pty Limited (SSPL) has developed an On-Line Viscometer to monitor and control slurry viscosity, whether by controlling water addition or by controlling dispersant addition. Using this instrument the slurry rheology can be controlled at the optimum level, maximizing solids throughput, and minimizing water, reagent, and dispersant addition. This paper discusses rheology of typical mineral slurries, the relationship between slurry rheology and percent solids in a slurry, and the need for rheological control in mineral processing. The effects of rheology on various process steps, and the use of dispersants are reviewed. The paper concludes with summarizing actual case histories and cost impact of Theological control.

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss & dilution. The mischaracterisation of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of blasting can lead to significant financial losses on account of ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorised as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run of mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorised as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have developed innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures to sustain the benefits.

A laboratory method for the simulation of in-situ leaching of uranium was developed under contract to the Interior Department's Bureau of Mines. Simulation tests using sulfuric acid, ammonium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate as reagents and hydrogen peroxide as oxidant were carried out with representative ores from Texas and Wyoming. The tests not only yielded recovery rates of uranium and permeability changes, but also qualitative inferences on the chemical and physical phenomena which occur underground. Leaching with basic solutions was found to be kinetic constrained and with acid solutions, equilibrium constrained. The rapid permeability changes observed when leach solutions were introduced, were probably caused by gas blockages in the packing. Precipitation of calcite or gypsum and the reaction of clay to leach solutions had slow and gradual effect on the packing permeabilities.

Gold leaching of an auriferous pyrite ore from the Portovelo deposit in Ecuador indicates that noncyanide leaching systems, such as thiocyanate and thiourea, are not as effective as the traditional cyanide system. For example, whereas approximately 95% of the gold can be leached from the ore with cyanide, only about 50% gold dissolution can be achieved with a thiocyanate leaching system. Electrochemical measurements indicate that gold is not cathodically protected by pyrite in these systems. Based on the results of preliminary diagnostic experiments, it appears that gold dissolution in thiocyanate and thiourea systems is limited by passivation due to the formation of either elemental sulfur or sulfur compounds on the gold surface.

Any geostatistical study involves (implicit) hypotheses about 1. The distribution function 2. The drift of the data 3. The (underlying) variogram Once these are known, most other results follow from geostatistical theory. However, to date, there have been few theoretical studies on testing these implicit hypotheses. Most of the published studies in this area have dealt with the fluctuation of the variogram or the sampling distribution of the variogram (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978; Davis and Borgman, 1979). Questions regarding these hypotheses regarding a given deposit arise often. Coal geologists often infer channels and washouts on the basis of thicknesses data. Zoning is recognized in a variety of metal deposits. A test as to whether these inferences are valid on just chance occurrences would have widespread application. .It is standard geostatistical practice to "eyeball" fit variograms. In the early exploration phase when just a few pairs are available, the variogram often displays wide fluctuations and there may be considerable doubt about which variogram model to use.

It is a common observation that objects having, different; temperatures exchange energy by radiative transfer. The quantity of radiant energy emitted by an object is a definite function of its temperature. Therefore, a measurement of emitted radiation, by means of a calibrated radiometric instrument, provides a temperature measurement without contacting the emitting object. The physical laws describing radiant energy transfer and their application to remote temperature measurement form the substance of this paper. The energy radiated by bodies having temperatures up to 4000°C is largely in the infrared spectral region. The infrared spectral region is that part of the electro-magnetic spectrum having wavelengths longer than visible light and extending to the microwave region. The wave-lengths range from 0.7 micron (1 micron = 10-4 cm) to 1000 microns. In general, infrared radiometry deals, with the methods of measuring energy flux in the 1 to 15 micron region of the infrared spectrum.

Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name II Sp 1 it Sets'" have been under research and development by the author and the Ingersoll-Rand Company since February of 1973. The United States Bureau of Mines and the Mines Enforcement and Safety Administration as well as many mining companies have cooperated in field testing the device. Split Set rock anchors are distinctively different from the widely used mechanical rock anchors or fully grouted rock anchors. They control ground movement internally in a manner that allows controlled deformation during the early phase of the ground reaction curve but then, as secondary creep develops, anchorage per unit length increases and they serve to strengthen and stabilize the opening for long periods of time. The history of research and development of the Scott Split Set rock anchor system with accompanying laboratory and field test data is presented in this paper.

Plans for a large industrial development in the Upper Ohio Valley between Moundsville and New Martinsville, West Virginia, were announced in the Fall of 1955. This development consisted of a large aluminum plant to be .built by Olin-Mathieson; a 675,000 KW power plant to be constructed by the American Electric Power Service; and a large coal mine adjacent to the power plant to be developed by the Hanna Coal Company Division of Consolidation Coal Company. The Ireland Mine was designed to efficiently supply fuel for the power plant, and this was the first consideration in the location of facilities, design, and development of plant and the selection of the equipment. The first problem was to find a suitable area for the surface facilities. A level bottom area south of the power plant was reserved for future industrial plants and this area was also blocked off from the coal reserves by an old abandoned and flooded mine. The coal storage facilities of the power plant were on the north side of the plant and it was decided to locate the coal mine preparation plant on-the shoulder of a hill above the power plant. This location required the excavation of 70,000 yards of rock but permitted the driving of a belt slope from the plant at an angle so that the haulage roads underground would miss the abandoned Cresap Mine. This location also permitted the plant to be located at an elevation so that the conveyors leaving the plant were horizontal and had sufficient clearance above the highway and railroad tracks. The other surface facilities consisting of air shafts, supply slope, supply yard, office, bathhouse, shop and warehouse were located in the valley some distance north of the preparation plant. This location placed these facilities one mile nearer to the working area. Plans for design and development of the mine were started in November 1955; grading and clearing of surface area was started in January 1956; the air shafts and slopes were started in the Spring and Summer of 1956; and the first coal was produced from the supply slope in October 1956. The preparation plant was put in operation in March 1958, and by July 1959 was producing 8,000 tons per day.

The LUMINEOS network was established in 2013 to monitor mining-induced seismicity in Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD), located in south-western Poland. Since the starting time, the network was improved and today consists of 17 seismometers and 10 accelerometers. Up to now, the strongest recorded earthquake in the region had Mw4.0. Both raw seismic data and earthquakes catalog for events recorded by the LUMINEOS network are fully open and available on the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/#episode:LGCD). During the last 7 years, the network improvements gave us a possibility to increase location accuracy for shallow mining events. This accuracy is influenced by factors such as the configuration of seismic stations, noise level at seismic stations, and the influence of the velocity model. Here we encountered two main issues which are worth to discuss. The first one is the low detection threshold of two seismic stations and their significant impact on the location errors. The second one is the large uncertainty in the S-wave picking. Even though S-waves are not so clearly visible on seismograms, they are very helpful in the estimation of source location and strength of seismic events in the region. In our work, we present the history of LUMINEOS network and corresponding improvement on location accuracy as well as the influence of noisy stations on the error distribution and how it is connected with location results. We also investigate the effect of the S-wave phases and how they are related to the accuracy of the earthquakes locations in the network.

INTRODUCTION Several major factors introduce uncertainties into the assessment of radon progeny exposure to miners using time-weighted average radon progeny concentrations: uncertainty in the measurement of radon progeny concentrations in specific areas, assignment of an individual miner's time to those areas, variation in radon progeny concentration between measurements and potential human errors involved in calculating concentrations and handling data. The currently available grab-sampling methods for determining working level were analyzed to determine the magnitude of the uncertainty due to each of these factors. For all measurement methods studied, the variation in the airborne concentration with time in operational areas of a mine is the dominant factor in the uncertainty in determining annual radon progeny exposures for individual miners. Uncertainties relating to accuracy of the method and precision of measurement were found to contribute a significantly greater portion of the total uncertainty than human errors. Under normal conditions, if the technicians performing the measurements are conscientious and well trained, human error contributes little to the total uncertainty of the radon progeny exposure determination. The primary goal of radiation monitoring is the reduction of radiation exposure to the lowest reasonably achievable level below regulatory limits. Monitoring personnel in mines should be trained not only to obtain accurate estimates of miner radiation exposures but also to recognize and, when possible, to implement correction of situations which result in unnecessarily high radon progeny exposures. ESTIMATION OF UNCERTAINTY DUE TO HUMAN ERRORS Human errors affecting the assignment of annual radon progeny exposure to individual miners can be placed in two categories: those related to the measurement of radon progeny concentration in specific mine areas and those related to estimation of occupancy time for individual miners and transcribing data to permanent records. The former are specific for the measurement method used; the latter are common to all methods. Errors in Determination of Working Level All systems for determining radon progeny concentration require measurement of several parameters, which include volume of air sampled, count rate and decay time. These quantities and appropriate constants are used in a basic equation, specific to the system, which estimates working level. An unintentional random mistake in measurement of any one of these parameters or in the selection of proper constants will contribute to the uncertainty in the determination of working level. In our analysis of human error we separated each measurement method into a sequence of independent operations, with each step subject to operator error. For each operation we estimated the probability of occurrence and the consequence of errors to obtain a resulting uncertainty. Certain types of errors result in specific consequences. For example, we assumed that an error of 5 seconds in timing of a 5-minute sample results in a fractional error of 1/60 (1.7%). Other types of errors can result in a range of uncertainty. Transposing digits read from a scaler can produce errors ranging from near zero to approximately 60%. In these cases we calculated the statistical variance for the distribution of errors. We assigned the square root of the variance divided by the mean as the consequence factor for that type of error. This is essentially the same as a coefficient of variation. The product of the probability of occurrence and the consequence factor is the fractional uncertainty in the measurement due to that particular error. The total uncertainty due to human errors is calculated by taking the square root of the sum of the squares of the uncertainties generated by all manual operations. Uncertainties Due to Human Error for the Kusnetz Method One of the techniques most commonly used to estimate working level in U.S. uranium mines is the Kusnetz method. A generalized way to express the equation used to compute WL by this method is: WL = (Net Alpha Counts)/(V)(ST)(CT)(E)(K) where: V = sample flow rate in liters/min ST = sampling time in min CT = counting time in minutes E = absolute counting efficiency K = Kusnetz conversion factor (dis/min-L per WL), as a function of decay time in minutes. The example of human error analysis presented here is based on the Kusnetz procedure having a timing sequence of 5 minutes sampling time, 40 minute decay time, 2 minute counting time. During the sampling procedure a stop watch is used to determine the timing interval. We assume that it is common to make small timing errors of a few seconds, but larger timing errors occur infrequently. Errors greater than 30 seconds are considered to be essentially non-existent since we assume that the

INTRODUCTION The selection of the optimum coal preparation plant flowsheet is a vital part of the development of a new plant or the expansion of an existing facility. Selection of an inappropriate flowsheet or individual equipment items can result in costly production losses, or needless expenditures or redundant or oversized equipment. The accuracy of the flowsheet selection process is, like most decisions, heavily dependent upon the amount, reliability, and quality of the database. A flowsheet which is based on simple borehole information from an area that has experienced little or no previous mining activity must necessarily include significant allowances for uncertainties. However, a plant which is to be built at an existing mine with good information on run-of-mine (ROM) coal quality, as well as bulk washability data and accurate projections of future quality, can be optimized. The following chapter will describe the processes which should be followed to select the most appropriate flowsheet for each unique operation. They include: 1. Examining and adjusting the washability database to reflect the ROM feed. 2. An evaluation of clean coal specifications. 3. Selection of the level of washing required. This includes no washing, if the coal is already at the desired specification, all the way through to complex total washing circuits for metallurgical grade coals. 4. Selection of the appropriate circuit such as dense medium bath vs. Baum jig. The most appropriate circuit is generally determined on the basis of economics. An approach for performing the evaluation will be desired. 5. The steps that need to be followed to develop a balanced plant flowsheet. ADJUSTING WASHABILITY DATA It is not unusual to have as many as 10 to 20 sets of washability information available for a particular mining property. These may be a combination of core and bulk samples or all bulk samples. In the latter case, they may also be face and/or ROM samples. It is necessary to reduce all of this information to a single set of washability data that is representative of the mean feed to the proposed preparation plant. This set is used to compare the clean coal yield and quality characteristics of the various flowsheet options. The term "representative" has some serious negative connotations. It is recognized that ROM coal quality will vary throughout a mine. However, over a period of 250 to 350 days per year, certain trends can be established. If possible, this "representative" sample should be close to the coal quality of the mean daily sample in terms of raw ash and sulfur contents, clean coal yield, and clean coal ash and sulfur content. Minerals contribute to the U.S. gross domestic prod-uct (GDP) at several levels?mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. In 2008, the estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States was 1.1 percent and the nominal GDP was about $14.3 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. For instance, continued declines in the U.S. housing market during 2008 were reflected in further reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone (mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction), and those associated with the related manufacture of goods, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard ? all used by the housing industry. The widespread effects of the slowing domestic economy became more apparent in the last three to six months of 2008 when prices for many mineral commodities declined sharply after reaching record highs earlier in the year, indicating significantly lower demand for those materials or products containing them.

Preliminary investigations have shown that wetland-based treatment systems can be an effective and relatively inexpensive control strategy for mine drainage pollution in eastern coal mining regions. This strategy also has potential for western mining regions, although too few systems have been installed in the west to permit general evaluation of the concept for western climates. The construction of prototype systems is encouraged for some situations. Wet-land environments have the capability of removing metals by natural geochemical and biological processes, including precipitation, filtration, ion absorption, and biological uptake and accumulation. Data presented for natural wetlands receiving mine drainage show removal of iron and other metals, and high accumulation of metals in soils and plants.

Cyprus Pima Mining Company is located in the Mineral Hill District of southern Arizona, approximately 22 miles south-southeast of Tucson. Cyprus Pima Mining Company is owned 50.01% by Cyprus Mines Corporation, 24.99% by Utah International Incorporated, and 25% by Union Oil Company of California, with Cyprus having the management responsibility. Cyprus Pima's history has been one of continued expansion from an initial plant of 3,000 TPD in 1957; 6,000 TPD in 1963; 18,000 TPD in 1966; 36,000 TPD in 1967; and 53,500 TPD in 1972. The major reason for Expansion IV was that a large volume of low-grade ore had to be moved to get at a higher grade ore in the course of proper pit development. With mining costs already defrayed, this relatively hard, low-grade material became economically profitable for subsequent milling and concentrating treatment. Similar material previously stockpiled was available for ore treatment. In an effort to meet the continuing search for lower unit costs, the largest milling and concentrating equipment had to be examined. The management of Cyprus Pima Mining Company began investigating autogenous, and semi-autogenous milling in 1964 when two carloads of ore selected from the Cyprus Pima pit were sent to the Koppers--Hardinge Operation at York, Pennsylvania for testing. One car contained approximately 40 tons of hard arkosite and the other contained approximately 40 tons of ore classified as soft Hornfels. The purpose of the testing was to determine the amenability of both ore types to autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding.

This is the seventh annual tabulation of royalty information. It is also the first year in which some data have been deleted to make room for new data. The concept of royalties evolved from a time when the government owned all of the land, including mines, to the situation where free miners won the right to claim minerals but paid a portion of their production to the royal treasury. Today, a mineral royalty is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights for the privilege of producing the mineral commodity. However, some people incorrectly believe that the selling price and the royalty are the same thing. The contract between the owner (lessor) and the mining company (lessee) is the mineral lease. Some clauses that are common to mineral leases include: identification of property, granting clause, reservations, definitions, royalty rate, taxes and title, indemnity, termination, inspection, assignability, successors, and reclamation. There often are variations in royalty rates for a given commodity that reflect differences in location, quality, market conditions or public versus private ownership. History In the time of ancient Rome, the government owned the mining properties by virtue of conquest. It would lease the mines to favored citizens who would pay rent to the State. Various conditions of sovereign ownership of both land and mineral rights continued in Europe until the Renaissance. As the laws evolved for land ownership by private citizens, the concept that minerals belonged to the State (King, Crown, sovereign) continued until about the 15th century. Free miners challenged the notion of sovereign ownership and won the right to discover and claim minerals. But a portion of their production had to be paid to the sovereign - a royalty. So, the original concept of a mineral royalty was a tax on production that was due to the Crown or Church. The term mineral royalty, as it is known today, is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights (formerly the royal owner) for the privilege of mining and producing the mineral commodity. The owner of the mineral rights, the lessor, and the mine operator, the lessee, enter into an agreement to mine the property. The agreement is the lease. While this concept is common, there are some who do not understand that the royalty is a portion of production paid to the owner as agreed on in the lease document. This author has seen reports where the selling price of a commodity has been quoted as the royalty. ("They get 70 cents a ton royalty at their pit and the guy down the road only has a 65 cent royalty.") These reports have been authored by people not familiar with the mining industry. Lease clauses In addition to the amount to be paid the lessor, there are several other items to be addressed in the lease agreement. The following list may not be all inclusive, but briefly describes most of the common clauses any good mining lease should contain. Identification: This opening clause names the owner (lessor) and the operator (lessee), the address of each, and gives the legal description of the property. Granting clause: This part of the lease gives the time period or duration of the agreement and information about renewal periods. It also has language about the exclusive right of the lessee to mine the property. Reservations: If the owner wants to exclude any portion of the property or set some specific conditions about the operation, there needs to be a clause that describes these reservations. Definitions: This section should address some of the technical terms that the lessor may find confusing - short tons versus cubic yards, dollars versus percentage of average selling price, any escalator indices such as consumer price index or producer price index, and material mined versus material sold. Royalty: This section spells out what the royalty rate will be, how often it will be paid, if there is an annual minimum, the pay dates, and how the records will be kept. This section also describes the conditions under which the lessee is exempt from the annual minimum - natural disasters, strikes, governmental actions, or other causes referred to as force majeure. Taxes and title: The lease needs to identify who is responsible for the property taxes, severance taxes (if applicable), and other taxes that relate to the mining activity - taxes on equipment, improvements, or stockpiles. This is a good place in the lease for the owner to certify his ownership of the property and its mineral rights and also certify that no other leases are in effect. The lessees may want language that allows them to pay mortgages or other debts on the property to keep their lease in effect. Indemnity: This portion of the lease identifies that the lessee assumes the risks for lessee's mining operation. Lessor should expect indemnification by the lessee through standard insur¬ance policies - workers compensation, liability and property damage. Termination: Both the lessor and lessee want language that will allow them to terminate the lease. "This paper takes an in-depth look at the $72 million design-build Norris Cut project, which includes the replacement of an existing 54-inch waste water sewer main to Fisher Island under the Norris Cut Channel. Tunneling through one of the country’s most unpredictable geologies created unique challenges in both the design and construction phases of the project. The paper presents the geotechnical and structural design considerations for the 100-foot deep secant piled TBM launch shaft in the highly permeable Fort Thompson formation limestone and sands. The structural design effort also included the design of the tremie slab, thrust wall and design of the largely unreinforced launch shaft to resist asymmetric loading from partial ground freezing. The retrieval shaft was designed as a deep soil mixed shaft and is thought to be the deepest soil-mixed shaft in Miami. From a construction perspective, this paper discusses the unique challenges of building two shafts with two different techniques and will compare some of the constructability aspects, costs and equipment schedule-considerations related to the use of two separate techniques. INTRODUCTION Nicholson Construction Company (NCC) was awarded a $72.1 million Design-Build contract to replace an existing force main from the Virginia Key Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant (CDWWTP) under the Norris Cut Channel to Fisher Island. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The project involves replacing an existing 54-inch diameter pre-stressed concrete sewer force main with a 60-inch diameter fiberglass force main. Arup USA, Inc. (Arup) is the lead designer for Nicholson on this design-build project. Arup is providing design services for the TBM launch and retrieval shafts, segmental tunnel lining, the fiberglass pipe, and the horizontal directional drill component. Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department currently owns and operates the existing 54-inch sanitary force main that transmits sewage collected from Miami Beach and Fisher Island to the CDWWTP for treatment and disposal. The existing force main was subject to a condition assessment in December 2011 which revealed structural deficiencies in the pre-stressed concrete pipeline."

For the past two years, Cliffs Natural Resources in Minnesota has tried an experiment: it has staffed a booth at the Iron Range Earth Fest. ?It was a little unusual for a mining company to participate in an event that centers around preserving the Earth?s resources,? said Julie Lucas, environmental manager at Hibbing Taconite Company. ?But Cliffs is a sustainable company and we want to take every opportunity to share information about our practices. We found the response to be overwhelmingly positive.? Cliffs? outreach effort is just one of the surprising ways mining companies across Minnesota are reaching out to stakeholders and finding success. The 85th annual SME Minnesota Section Meeting (73rd Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium), held April 17-18 in Duluth, MN, demonstrated the Minnesota mining community?s commitment to connection and collaboration, and how that approach is bringing success.

Mining legislation in Jamaica dates back to only 1947 when, on August 30 of that year the Minerals (Vesting) Act was promulgated. None of the exploratory and trial-mining projects over the preceding 450 years were regulated or controlled by law. It was the seriousness of the intent of the North American Aluminum Companies to establish a bauxite mining industry in Jamaica which led to the development of the first piece of mineral legislation. It is of note that the incoming mineral industrialist was more anxious than the Government to see that a legislative framework was in place. It was relevant then as it is today for good mining legislation to be in place for the Government to regulate and control the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources. It was also necessary for the industry to know their rights and obligations so that they could plan, explore and exploit with some assurance that their capital was secure. One of the main reasons that the mining of bauxite did not begin in Jamaica until 1952 was that no legislational framework existed prior to 1947.
