Employing the combination of two types of polyelectrolyte might become necessary to enhance both settling rate of the flocs and water clarity of fine particle suspension in high capacity thickening process. The sequence of addition, mixing, type and dosage of polymer affect the overall performance and capacity of a thickening process. For the sedimentation of copper flotation tailings, the cylinder test results showed that two different techniques may be used to achieve the required performance including high settling rate of flocs, underflow density and overflow water clarity, by either adjusting pH prior to anionic polyelectrolyte flocculation, or using a combination of polymer flocculant and coagulant (dual polymer system). The dynamic thickening testing results showed that only the approach using a dual polymer system is able to meet the required performance. The effects of polyelectrolyte dosage, the sequence and numbers of polyelectrolyte addition, feed concentration, bed level and rake speed on the settling rate, underflow solid, and water clarity were studied in cylinder test and a laboratory dynamic thickening unit with various conditions related to the thickening process. The dynamic test is especially valuable in evaluating the addition and mixing of polymers. The results were evaluated quantitatively, using total suspended solids in supernatant, underflow density and capacity per unit settling area per unit time as the measure of effectiveness. The objective of this study is to quantify and explain some of the parameters involved in the sedimentation of copper flotation tailings.

INTRODUCTION Construction of tunnels in urban areas, especially reclaimed areas, pose many problems. The Red Hook Intercepting Sewer Tunnel, Contract 1A is a portion of the Red Hook Water Pollution Control Project located along the Brooklyn waterfront in New York City. This contract required the construction of a 2620 meter long (8600 L.F.), 3 meter (10-foot) diameter soft ground tunnel, eight Tunnel Manholes, nine Regulator structures, four Diversion and Tidegate structures and 765 meters (2500 L.F.) of branch intercepting sewers of diameters between .30 meters (12 inches) and 1.8 meters (72 inches). The construction contract bid price was $62 million with a duration of three years. The tunnel route crosses over five sets of operational twin cast iron subway tubes with clearances ranging from 4.3 meters (14 feet) to as small as 0.35 meters (14 inches). The route of the tunnel traverses historically interesting areas which have been reclaimed over the last 200 years. This paper is a case history describing the contractor's methods utilized to successfully advance the work through the above problem areas. Pilot-scale tests indicate that effec¬tive concentration of fine gold from Colorado River sands can be achieved by flotation with the air-sparged hydrocyclone. The fine sands (55% minus 400 mesh and 0.01 opt*) from gravity concen¬tration were processed with a 5-cm air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity -1.0 tph dry solids). Concentrate grades as high as 5.0 opt were produced in a single stage at a recovery of 75.0%. The separation efficiency was significantly better than that achieved in conventional batch flotation experiments.

Automatic tripper control systems can be reliable and as such are suitable for use in the mining industry. Proper application of fundamental engineering principles provides the means for the reliability. Some of the principles are: (1) Be sure the system designer designs a system that does the job operations people want done; (2) Use sound logic design practices to avoid internal electrical problems; (3) The design must be maintenance oriented; and (4) Use good quality components. I would like to discuss a tripper control installation at Kennecott Copper Corporation, Chino Mines Division, in Hurley, New Mexico, and how these principles apply to this tripper control system. First, however, I will expand on the principles to clarify just what is meant. First, "Be sure the system designer designs a system that does the job operations people want done.? Operator acceptance is often the key to the success or failure of an automatic control system. One of the best ways I know of to get operator acceptance is to give him a system that he wants. I don't mean to imply that if bad practices or procedures exist that they should be incorporated in the control system. I do think that many designers feel they haven't done their job if the control system doesn't do things drastically different than the old manual method. Good engineering principles dictate that the job should be done right and if the manual method was right it can very likely be right for the automatic method.

Biology opens a new frontier for the mining industry. With rising environmental concerns, the need to couple conventional chemical and physical technologies with sustainable approaches is pressing. At Allonnia, we harness microbial processes to create innovative and environmentally responsible technologies with broad applications. The native microbial community (microbiome) remains largely unexplored at most mining sites, unlike the geochemical environment. The exploration of complex biological reactions that could transform mining technology is just starting and holds vast possibilities, spanning bio-cementation, carbon sequestration, ore beneficiation, water mitigation, bioleaching, metals recovery, and more. Allonnia has collected samples from mine sites in Australia, Africa, and North America to characterize the microbiome and uncover the genetic potential present in mineral-rich environments. We are evaluating microbial metabolites that selectively solubilize gangue from various ores. In addition, biological reactions hold promise as tailings stabilizers. Our early efforts illustrate exciting prospects for harnessing biology’s potential in mining.

"With regard to the EU funded project ‘Real-Time Mining’ a sensor-based acquisition, collection and transmission of data for the resource extraction process will be developed. The key concept promotes the change in paradigm from a discontinuous to a continuous process monitoring. Especially concerning material characterization, machine performance and underground positioning ‘Real-Time Mining’ will provide sensor solutions as well as the interfaces for integration, management and visualization of the collected data for a permanent updating process of the resource model with the aim of near real-time optimization of decisions. On the basis of ‘Real-Time Mining’-Output a permanent monitoring of costs can be performed as well in both, the installation and the production process of a mine. Due to the collected data in terms of machine performance connected with the underground positioning information added with personnel tracking and mine surveys a comprehensive overview of process performance is available. By evaluating those information in a specific manner costs per unit will arise for monitoring and possibly controlling actions. INTRODUCTION By having a look into the future of mineral extraction projects, a new challenge for the Ore Mining Industry will arise in the short and medium term. Due to the depletion of currently mined mineral reserves in addition to the persistently high demand of mineral raw materials, the extraction of complex reserves will be necessary. By characterizing such deposits as not constantly graded and geometrically varying, the extraction process, especially concerning the requirement of a minimized zero-value material handling, will become economically ineffective by utilizing the traditional mineral resource management methods. Regarding the state-of-the-art mineral resource management process along the mining value chain, an intermitted, discontinuous sequence of actions is applied (Figure 1). Recently data will be collected from drill hole cores. These rock samples are analyzed in a laboratory. Based on those analyses a resource model is created whereby unknown data between drill holes is interpolated. This resource model is the basis for all mine planning actions including the selection of the mining method, extraction sequencing and the prediction of the expected performance. With the start of the production, real conditions (concentrations of elements, hardness, stability, etc.) can be observed and measured. As the production process is running accordingly to the above described mine plan, the verification of the initial assumptions happens at the earliest after processing of the extracted material. Even if deviations between the predicted and the actual performance are now recognized, the execution of corrective actions is not possible anymore."

The US Constitution provides for regulation by the states for protecting the public's safety, health, and welfare. Hence, in the eyes of the law of all states today, this is the sole justification for registration of professional engineers. Wyoming was the first state to register professional engineers in 1907, to correct abuses of incompetent or fraudulent practices in surveying and real estate. Public safety and health are most directly affected by civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Other branches of engineering have a profound effect on the public welfare, including investors, and safety and health of employees. No arguments, pro or con, are valid except in relation to the registration laws of various states. Code of Ethics Few would argue the desirability of requiring conformance with a code of ethics. A major problem lies in enforcing compliance, since protecting the public demands a high standard of competence, yet assessing competence gets confused with restraint of trade. Bidding engineering work on price competition can lead to pressure to cut corners on engineering quality, and was therefore discouraged by codes of ethics. The Supreme Court, in a suit against the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), barred any engineering society from such bidding restriction. It has, however, upheld the right of states to impose codes of acceptable practice as part of registration laws. For example, Texas Canon I reads, "The engineer's paramount professional responsibility should be the safety, health, and welfare of the general public." Anything less makes the code practically meaningless, but there are potential conflicts of interest in many engineering organizations. How can conflicts be handled? Any corporation could improve its public image by adopting a policy that each employed PE should, without fear of recrimination, record in writing over his seal any problem or flaw in any design that comes to his attention. The policy should further require that his superior provide him a written reply pointing out that the "flaw" is accepted as requiring correction or as a calculated risk, or overruled as erroneous or as a difference of opinion. Errors in calculation of judgment are inevitable. Despite this, there are limits to how much time and money should be spent to eliminate them. It is difficult, however, to see any excuse for failure to conscientiously evaluate the opinion of a PE. This may be an impossible ideal, but how else can the profession or the industry have credibility? The National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE) has a code of ethics one presumably subscribes to by signing an application to write a Principles and Practices examination. However, NCEE has none of the power of enforcement that is available through state boards of registration. Registration Qualifications Qualifications are set by the laws of the states. In general, they require passage of an eight-hour examination in fundamentals, preferably at graduation, and, later, one in principles and practices. The examinations are compiled and distributed by NCEE. This system provides for a high degree of uniformity and reciprocity. States set the education and experience levels (typically four years after graduation) required by those desiring to write the principles and practices examination. Examinations The principles and practices examination calls for answering eight of 20 equal weight questions; one on engineering economics, 19 on engineering. Economics may enter into engineering questions, but only provided the question is not answerable by an economist without engineering training. In preparing examinations, NCEE strives to use questions that require some judgment and can be more effectively answered by someone with four years experience beyond college. The present contribution examines the main components of a sustainable land reclamation program applicable to surface coal mines and the environmental threats that hinder the transition to sustainable land management. It compares the main ?waste streams? that cause adverse impacts to the environment with the so-called ?best available technologies and managing practices? that are proposed by organisations with high expertise in land management. Also, it addresses the environmental and socio-economic indicators that should be monitored in order to assess the results of the land management program and to allow remedial actions and continuous improvement. Based on the Greek lignite mines experience in land reclamation, this paper presents the common weaknesses of the land management programmes and proposes an improved communication scheme that moves things towards sustainability. This scheme is based on a more rational exploitation of the available economic resources and a constructive dialog between the mining companies, the local authorities, the state institutions and other stakeholders.

In recent years, mining operations have experienced the impacts of climate variability, increasing costs, and changes in the socioenvironmental dynamics of the territories. For this reason, the aggregates industry needs to design and define concrete and immediate actions to address climate change. An appropriate way to achieve this is as follows: • Calculate greenhouse gas emissions, sources, and relevance factor. • Make projections of future scenarios. • Design and implement action plans The proposed climate change mitigation and adaptation projects are logistical optimizations of mining equipment (mitigation). Second is the design of an early warning system to predict possible flooding (adaptation).

Acid neutralization titrations were applied to the characterization of soil and overburden for the control and prediction of acid rock drainage in the coal fields of the eastern United States in the 1970?s (1). These became known as the Sobek methods as a result of the early United States Environmental Protection Agency publication and the methods have been modified (2) to be adapted to many applications in the metal mining sector (3,4,5,6,), and, as a result, there are a large number of acid neutralization potential methods being used that are referred to as Modified Sobek methods. Standardization of neutralization potential methods for metal bearing ores and related materials based on carbonate carbon, rather than titration, commenced in the 1990?s through the American Society of Methods and Materials (ASTM) Committee E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metal Ores and Related Materials Subcommittee E01.02 on Ores, Concentrates and Related Metallurgical Materials (7). A subcommittee section, E01.02.05 on Environmental Methods, was organized to coordinate the method and material standardization efforts of ASTM and the Acid Drainage Technology Initiative Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) Prediction Committee (8), which took on the project of standardization of the acid neutralization potential acidity titration method (ANPA) to supplement the carbonate carbon method in E1915 (9) for application to samples which have metal carbonates (10), in particular, which result in overestimation of the neutralization potential using the carbonate carbon methods (11).

A good quality assurance program at a coal mine or power plant is accurate, timely and consistent. The quality analysis is accurate due to a complete sampling of the coal stream loaded into the unit train. The sample analysis is accurate because standardized testing procedures are applied. Once an analysis is completed, the results must be communicated to the electric utility in a timely manner. The electric utility needs the results to better manage the coal inventory at its power plants. A quality assurance program can also help a mine deliver a consistent product to a utility's power plants. The importance of accuracy, timeliness and consistency are based on major changes that are taking place in the electric utility industry.

The shipment of coal, ores, and minerals in bulk form during the winter months presents a difficult problem in emptying rail cars. U. S. Steel Research in cooperation with U. S. Steel Coal Operations bas laboratory tested and field monitored the effectiveness of using freeze conditioning agents (FCA) to minimize the frozen coal problem. This report examines, in an overview manner, our experience after four seasons of treatment using different FCA agents on raw and preparation plant products. Our observations indicate that if an FCA is applied correctly it is effective mineral to mineral. Freezing problems still occur at the interface between the coal and the metal of the car sides and bottoms. Leading chemical suppliers have made positive improvements in their FCA formulations with second and third generation products. Further advances are needed to make chemical treatment for the prevention of frozen coal a real full-proof method.

The IOC Mining and Operations Departments expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1.0 m x 1.0 m x 1.0 m; 39 inches x 39 inches x 39 inches) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment, and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine and to date has significantly improved upon baseline measures. One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduces the infiltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rockmass. Reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muckpiles has been a result. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realized. To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used a of first-of-kind technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A Digital Vision System (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with GPS locations. A large population of digital images were analysed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

The rapid increase of P2O5 use for food, biofuels, and LiFePO4 batteries etc. accelerates the depletion rate of phosphate reserves. In the phosphate industry, a significant amount of ultrafine phosphate has been discarded as slime tailing due to processing difficulties. The major problems associated with ultrafine particle flotation are low probability of bubble-particle collision and adhesion, and high probability of unwanted gangue particles entrainment. This paper investigates the enhanced ultrafine phosphate particle flotation probability by Eriez’ CavTube generated fine/ ultrafine bubbles and the improved flotation selectivity by wash water etc. Ultrafine phosphates with various gangue minerals of quartz/muscovite, calcite/dolomite, and iron/ silica were studied. Microscopic observations show that the entrained ultrafine gangue minerals can be minimized by using wash water in column flotation. A three-factor threelevel central composite experimental design was conducted for ultrafine phosphate flotation. For comparison, both benchtop mechanical cell and laboratory column flotation tests were performed at their optimal respective flotation conditions. Using Eriez CavTube column flotation technology for Industries Chimiques du Senegal (ICS) ultrafine slime tailings, a concentrate grade of 36.0% P2O5, was achieved at 89.4% P2O5 recovery. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical cell flotation. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include the high P2O5 grade and recovery.

The empirical rock failure criteria play an important role in predicting the mechanical behavior of rocks, since affecting parameters on the behavioral properties of rocks are complex and numerous. Usually the empirical failure criteria are obtained by statistical methods, namely by means of fitting the mathematical function onto the experimental data. For evaluation and verification of the results, however, the quality and accuracy of the fit must be considered. This paper studies the efficiency and accuracy of conventional empirical rock failure criteria using a new approach, which is based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude on the constant parameters of each criterion. The approach adopted here, is based on the combination of some parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), type of function, degree of freedom and the confidence level of constants. Correlation coefficient (R2) is then a comprehensive test and can be used effectively for comparison and accuracy of empirical rock failure criteria.

The use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines is controversial because the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) regards "whole diesel exhaust" as "a potential occupational carcinogen." Threshold limit values (TLVs) are recommended for the gaseous pollutants CO, CO2, NO, N02, SO2 and some hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, however, no TLV recommended for diesel exhaust aerosols (DEA) nor is there a standard method for sampling these aerosols. The University of Minnesota and the USBM have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) that utilizes size selective, inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were conducted in underground coal mines that used diesel equipment. The objective of this report is to present these data and to assess the impact of diesel face haulage equipment on mine air quality. Air quality data were collected in four underground coal mines. The mines used continuous miners and diesel haulage equipment. Daily samples were collected at the section intake, haulageway and on haulage vehicles. Both full-and partial-shift samples were collected using a variety of aerosol instruments. These included the PDEAS and the micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) that sample the mine aerosol diesel exhaust fraction. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust CO, CO2, NO, NO2 and SO2. These measurements were made by either collecting bag samples for subsequent gas analysis or by Palmes dosimeters. Concentrations of CO, C02, NO, NO2 and SO2 were well below regulated levels. The mine average DEA concentration determined by the PDEAS in the haulageway for the three mines surveyed was 0.79 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.19 mg/m3. DEA contributed 65% of the respirable aerosol, at this location. These results were the same as the mean DEA concentrations calculated from size distribution measurements obtained using the MOUDI. This was 0.78 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.22 mg/m3.

In the early days of the United States, gypsum was most commonly used for the manufacture of plasters with energy being used for quarrying, grinding, and calcining of gypsum rock. With the dramatic switch to gypsum-drywall construction after World War II, the energy usage per ton of rock processed increased more than threefold, and with the rapid growth of the construction industry, the total energy consumption in gypsum-board production alone increased eightfold during the period from 1940 to 1973. The gypsum industry was one of the first to recognize the need for energy conservation and has voluntarily reported its progress to the Federal Energy Administration for the past several years. Efficiencies in the use of energy have resulted in decreasing the unit consumption an estimated 10 percent during the past six years. Improved combustion efficiencies, optimum operating conditions, more liberal use of insulation, and heat recovery will all contribute to the gypsum industry's goal of using less energy. Gypsum products today are vital to over 85 percent of new housing construction in the United States.

What unusual features are there about finding, winning, and using the industrial minerals of Canada which may be of interest and yet not widely known. Have you, for example, ever wondered where the raw material for those distinctive greenish grey statuettes, so readily recognizable as Eskimo carvings, comes from? Although stone suitable for carving is obtained at several northern locations, in recent years the Federal government, the Quebec government, and one or two private companies have shipped supplies of various rock types from other sources to central distribution points in the Canadian north for the express purpose of providing Eskimo artists with raw materials for carving.
