Development of large mechanical flotation machines during the past fifteen years. This success was a contributing factor in recognizing the value in a systematic and rational means of optimizing the flotation circuit, where the preferred circuit arrangement is based on both economic and metallurgical performance considerations applied to a relatively small number of flotation machines. Flotation kinetics and effective pulp residence time models have been incorporated into a computer program, described in this paper, which has proven to be an effective analytical tool to quantitatively relate flotation process parameters, such as feed tonnage and grade, solids concentration, and reagent strategy, to flotation circuit arrangement, machine size and operating condition.

The benefits derived from the use of main fan evasees or diffusers are well known. If a well designed evasee is fitted to a fan either more air will flow through it or the same air flow rate will be discharged at a lower fan speed. This latter possibility will reduce the air power requirement of the mine, the fan input power and the overall energy costs. Despite these apparent advantages, many reports have been received from the industry of poor evasee performance. After examination, it appears that these problems are often caused by installation difficulties or inaccurate design procedures. The performance of an evasee is affected by several independent factors. Some of these factors describe the evasee geometry whilst others are concerned with the behaviour of the air as it passes through the evasee. This paper shows that the divergence angle is by no means the only ;important parameter which affects evasee performance and that the size of the inlet boundary layer has a significant influence. The performance of evasees of differing geometric shape are compared and the criterion to be used for optimum performance is discussed. It is shown that the commonly used evasee efficiency is a poor indicator of good performance. Recent work by the author and others is evaluated and a simple design. guide discussed. For more sophisticated work, details of a. computer program are provided. Finally, a brief resume of the performance of truncated diffusers is given. Since compressibility effects can be ignored for most mining applications, incompressible flow has been assumed for most of this paper.

Three substrates (MgO crystal, CaF2 crystal and Mg plate) were used to construct thin layers of Mg(OH)2. Various routes were used to modify these substrates, including surface hydration and sol-gel coating. In each case, it was found (by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) that thin layers of Mg(OH)2 could be produced. In the case of hydrated layers, the surface morphology of the Mg(OH)2 resembles the bulk platelet shape of precipitated Mg(OH)2.

The human requirements have increased rapidly depending on population density and urbanization thus industrialization has grown steadily. As a result of the situation, the greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and the global warming have increased slowly. Today this effect has continued to increase. Therefore, the effects of greenhouse gases in all areas of production must be controlled. The study presents the methods of determination the CO2 emissions (CO2-e) and energy consumption in aggregate production. The aggregate constitute approximately 70% by volume of concrete that has widespread use as construction material in the world. One of the most important elements in today's terms is sustainable use of resources and minimum CO2 emissions (CO2 + CO + NOx + CH4.vb.) at every stage of production of aggregate. Therefore, these elements must be taken into consideration in the aggregate production standards. The choice of production method of aggregate is very important for optimum use of energy and effects of greenhouse gas emissions. So the properties of the aggregate material must be known well to obtain the target. Within the scope of this study, the unit value of CO2-e that release when the production of aggregate in different formations is determined for our country. Thus, the effects of green house gas emission can be evaluated according to the characteristics of material in aggregate production planning. In this study, energies consumed during the production of aggregates at a quarry in Istanbul Cendere region were investigated by taking the different formations encountered at the quarry into consideration. The unit CO2 emission values per ton of produced aggregates were calculated as a result of this investigation. Besides, energy consumption values of previous months at this quarry were taken and the unit CO2 emission values were also calculated.

Introduction The Open Cut is one of the best known landmarks in South Dakota's Black Hills. It is the site of the original discovery of the Homestake ledge, or lead, in 1876. Between that time and 1945, the Open Cut produced about 36 Mt (40 million st) of gold ore, the majority of which was drawn from underground operations. In 1981, a drilling program was undertaken to determine how much ore the old timers left behind. The results of this study indicated an ore body made up of broken and caved ground, and solid blocks in pillars and crowns. Reserves are estimated at about 6.8 Mt (7.5 million st) of gold ore, grading at 4 g/t (0.116 oz per st). Total tonnage of material, including waste, is estimated at more than 60 Mt (66 million st). The mining plan is a combination open pit and underground operations. The bottom 78 m (255 ft) will be mined by the underground panel-caving method. The open pit was designed as a contractor operation up to the expected milling stage or the point of sustained ore production. The pit was designed to avoid disturbance of US Highway 85 near Lead, SD. In 1983, the South Dakota Board of Minerals and Environment approved the mining and reclamation plan. Test mining began in the north of the Open Cut using open pit methods. Upon completion of the test pit, Homestake Mining's board of directors approved an expanded mine plan. They committed an additional $27.1 million to prestrip the ore body that is expected to yield 23 t (750,000 oz) of gold. Project life is estimated at 15 years. Exploration program In early 1980, 10 diamond drill holes were drilled from the surface in the vicinity of the east side of the Open Cut. The reserves delineated by that drilling were too small to justify their development. A continuation of this study attempted to quantify the tonnage remaining in the bottom of the Open Cut in the crushed remnants of old stope-and-crown pillars. This was originally thought to be minable by improved drawhole methods using highly mechanized procedures. By early 1981, however, thinking turned toward surface mining methods. The effort to quantify minable ore tonnage ultimately involved drilling 385 reverse-circulation rotary drill holes. These were drilled from August 1981 to March 1983 in several groups of holes. Each group, or drilling program, had a slightly different immediate goal or purpose. The holes were drilled to various depths using truck-mounted Drill Tech 40 drills with doublewalled 76 mm (3 in.) pipe with 134 mm (5.25 in.) three-cone rotary bits. Initially, wet drilling was employed using a cyclone collection system. Since cutting recovery was not as high as it should have been, all subsequent drilling was dry. The cuttings were collected and deposited by way of a cyclone into the sample bag. The pickup for the cuttings using the three-cone bits was about 50 mm (2 in.) above the bottom of the hole. Overall cutting recovery for the drilling program was estimated at 75%. Samples were taken on each 1.5 m (5 ft) of hole drilled. Each sample was split into three 48-g (1-2/3 assay ton) charges. The accepted value was the straight average of the three charges. Because of the known "nugget effect," assays were nearly impossible to duplicate. Therefore, to validate the regular assays, a series of screen fire assays were run. Based on this method of assays and checks, it was concluded that 10% more ounces would be produced than indicated by mine grade. Test pit The northernmost portion of the mine as planned is known as the Terraville test pit. This portion was mined ahead of the rest and separately. It provided answers to questions on slope stability, reserves correlation, mill recoveries, mining costs, and surface mining conditions in various weather and ground conditions since many boulders and much timber were expected. The mining plan for this portion of the pit was successful. More ore was mined than was expected. Mixing of Open Cut ore with underground ore in the mill feed was successful. 1. INTRODUCTION Empirical methods have always been important in tunneling in contrast to many other branches of engineering. Beginning in the late 19th century, when engineering entered the phase of formal modeling, this dichotomy could be seen to emerge even in the work of individuals. Culmann (1), Ritter (2) Kommerell (3) and others simultaneously were developing analytical approaches to bridge and building design and empirical approaches to tunnel design. The dichotomy remains. Empirical or simple analytical methods are used at most in the preliminary design of bridges and buildings, while they are used in all phases of tunnel design and construction. In fact, the past decade has seen a resurgence of interest in empirical methods, and with it discussion and controversy. This discussion has centered on the suitability of various methods. In some applications identical results are obtained with differing methods and in some cases radically different ones. On certain occasions the discussion has focused more on the methodological rather than empirical by taking issue with the appropriateness of particular parameters or the structure of some methods. This paper attempts to establish a basis for judging the suitability of empirical methods in tunnel design, and their applicability to particular cases. The paper makes no claim of exhaustiveness, and instead emphasizes basic requirements for application. Various methods are reviewed against this background. A detailed comparison of empirical methods and a description of their concept and background is now being prepared (4). Specifically the paper first defines empirical methods, and their purpose (Section 2), describes their structure (Section 3), and focuses on the basic requirements each must satisfy (Section 4). Crude oil, as a central commercial commodity, is tied to major economic activities in all nations. Also its price fluctuation plays a significant role in global political and economic situation, as a change in the price invariably affects the cost of other goods and services. Therefore reliable forecasts of the price of oil are interest for a wide range of applications. Several approaches have been proposed over the past few years. These may divide into three categories; artificial intelligent, statistical techniques and hybrid methods. The neuro-fuzzy is one of the sub divisions of hybrid method, containing neural network and fuzzy techniques. In this paper a novel forecasting model based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference (ANFIS) is proposed to predict monthly crude oil price. To be able to train and test the model, the statistical data from 1990 to 2010, was obtained from West Texas Intermediate oil prices. The results are compared with a multi criteria regression analysis, it is demonstrated that the neuro-fuzzy lead an accurate and more promising forecast.

By implementing various mining practices, mine operators can reduce the respirable dust exposure levels of the roof bolter and the continuous miner operators. The Bureau of Mines has developed a computer program, entitled AMP (Alternative Mining Practices), that gives a quantitative comparison of these reductions. The alternative mining practices and their corresponding reductions in dust exposure levels that are evaluated by the program include a remote control continuous miner, a half-curtain ventilation system, two auxiliary fan-tubing bypass ventilation systems, a modified cutting sequence, a comparison between single-split and double-split ventilation networks, and a comparison between exhausting brattice and exhausting tubing. Descriptions of each of these mining practices are included in the report. The report also includes a hypothetical case study to show how AMP enables mine operators to select the technique(s) that is best suited to their particular needs. AMP is a compiled basic program that has been designed to run on computers with a DOS version 2.0 or later operating system. It includes high resolution graphics (640 X 200 dot positions) designed to run with video boards that are functionally compatible with the IBM Monochrome/ Printer Adapter. Graphic screens are selected from menus, and can be bypassed if the computer is not equipped to handle high resolution mode. Their primary function is to show proper implementation of the mining practices evaluated by the program. This package requires a minimum of 256K bytes of RAM. Mechanical excavation methods can significantly improve excavation performance and labor safety compared to drill and blast operations. Herrenknecht has developed a mechanized shaft sinking method for soft and medium strength rock. This system combines innovative technologies which allow simultaneous excavation, removal of cut material and the installation of rock support. This Shaft Boring Roadheader ?SBR? is flexible in diameter and can be used in shafts with changing diameters and different shaft support requirements for depth up to 2,000 m. During regular excavation personnel are not required to access or work on the shaft bench. The boom used to cut the shaft profile is based on roadheader technology.

Materials demands by the advancing process technologies, desire for higher performance and durability, and improved efficiency in combustion processes, such as applications in heat engines, heat exchanges, and batteries have added to the driving force fueling R&D efforts for the development of components with the combined characteristics of metals and non-metals. These new materials involve refined and specialized microstructures that can lead to improvements in the performance characteristics and durability new technological applications require. Fabrication and sintering methods, once believed to be sufficient, alone, have been found to be inadequate in the manufacture of such advanced components. Realization of the importance of the starting powders has led to efforts to produce materials of ultrahigh purity and ultrafine particle size with very narrow particle size distributions. Such powder characteristics are essential for the fabrication of components with high density and with the desired mechanical, electrical, or magnetic properties called for by the specific application. Novel ultrafine and ultrapure powder preparation techniques are discussed and effects of impurities on the powder characteristics, particle size and morphology, sintering behavior and properties of the finished product are elucidated.

United States Antimony Corporation, at its Yankee Fork property in central Idaho, is currently using a combination of flotation, gravity-amalgamation, and concentrate cyanide leaching, silver sulfide precipitation, and activated charcoal loading to recover both silver and gold. Tine processes of flotation, milling, gravity concentration, amalgamation, concentrate leaching, sulfide precipitation and gold recovery via charcoal are discussed. The flow sheet illustrates the use of cyanidation as an alternative to shipment to a smelter.

The current study is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) on-going subsidence research program. The long-term objective of the DOE program is to develop analytical methods of subsidence prediction applicable over a broad range of geologic and mining conditions encountered in the United States. The DOE currently has several contracts in progress to develop a sound data base that can be used in the development of predictive models. Dames & Moore is currently under contract to the DOE to collect and analyze detailed subsidence and hydrologic data from a coal mine employing longwall mining methods in the Eastern Coal Province. Work under Contract No. DE-AC22-80PC 30335 began in October of 1980 and will continue through September of 1984. This paper summarizes the work that has been completed through September of 1981 and presents the results that have been achieved during this period. Technical difficulties encountered during both the installation and monitoring phases are discussed, and recommendations for future work are presented.

The mining industry faces many workplace hazards that are a threat to human health and safety. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has found that employees in coal mining are more likely to be killed or sustain an injury or illness than workers in private industry. These injuries are also likely to be more severe (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2007). In recent years, coal mining injuries have attained national attention due to highly publicized disasters. Despite these threats to worker safety and health, the U.S. relies on the mining of coal to meet its need for electrical power, with42% of electricity in the U.S. generated through the burning of coal (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012b; United Mine Workers of America, n.d.). Furthermore, the production of coal continues to increase and reach record levels every year(National Mining Association, 2012; U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012a). For this reason, the coal mining industry must continue to find ways to protect its workers while maintaining productivity. One potential approach to protecting workers while maintaining productivity is through improving the safety culture at coal mines. In order to achieve this culture, operators, employees, the inspectorate, etc. must share a fundamental commitment to safety as a value. This type of culture is known in other industries as a ?safety culture? and can be defined as the characteristics of the work environment, such as the norms, rules, and common understandings that influence facility personnel?s perceptions of the importance that the organization places on safety. Fundamental to improving safety culture within an organization is understanding the existing safety culture; improvements cannot be made without first elucidating areas that require improvement. This manuscript details the process undertaken by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) to assess the safety culture at five underground coal mines across the United States. The purpose of this manuscript is to introduce the mining industry to a multi-methodological approach to safety culture assessments. Further, it is the goal of this manuscript to highlight the value of including both quantitative and qualitative methods into safety culture assessments in order to obtain the most comprehensive view of an organization?s safety culture. Because this manuscript focuses solely on the methodology implemented, data and results obtained during the five safety culture assessments will not be presented in this manuscript, but will appear in a future publication.

There is no doubt that simulated ventilation networks must be adequately verified before they can be extrapolated and used for predictive purposes. There are two general approaches as to how the verification can be established and these are summarised as follows; The first approach is to measure all individual branches with trailing hoses or barometers to get individual pressure drop and flow per branch and then calculate individual resistance factors for input into the software. The simulator is run, checking that the output makes general sense (check some sensitivities if possible). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure drop to be measured is relatively small and thus it is inherent that the measured set of individual K factors will be imprecise no matter how much care is taken in the measurements and the resultant simulations will inherit the same problem. In the second approach, the network is assembled using estimated (Atkinson) K factors (based on physical features of airway, past experience and catalogued typical K factors). Only the main primary flow rates are measured and hence the relative distribution of the primary ventilation in the main airways is determined (probably about 10 off primary air flow measurements). Main critical pressure differentials at main and booster fans and across critical doors are measured (probably about 6 off primary pressure differential measurements need to be made). The simulator is run and the computer model is used to iterate and select an updated suite of K factors so that the flow balances and pressure differentials are correctly simulated (typically only 2 or 3 iterations are all that is needed). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure differences to be measured will be substantial in absolute terms and can be measured with high precision. Also, because only primary flows are measured, these will generally be measured at higher air speed points and hence improved relative accuracy. This leads to more accurate simulation results. Attractive geology does not guarantee mining investment if a region’s policies are bad, according to mining executives surveyed in the Fraser Institute’s seventh Annual Survey of Mining Companies. Companies responsible for a combined US$642.4 million in international exploration (during 2002) rated the policy attractiveness and mineral attractiveness of mining jurisdictions around the world. Jurisdictions like Chile, Australia, Quebec and Nevada bolster their attractive geology with mining-friendly policies, the report said. These locations do well on the overall investment attractiveness index. On the other hand, jurisdictions like British Columbia and Indonesia, each with excellent geology, are hurt by their policies, which have lowered their score.

This paper will review thickening theory, from the ( ) of the practicing engineer, with particular emphasis on ( ) uncertainty or disagreement. It will attempt to outline broadly what we know and what we don't know. This should serve two purpose First, it will warn the process engineer where he might get into trouble. At least it will alert him to the risk involved in uncritically accepting any of the recommended design procedures. Second, it will identify for researchers some areas in which further work might be fruitful. Not too many years ago there would have been little to write on such a subject. We had been designing thickeners for decades, using the classic Coe and Clevenger procedure. As far as we were generally aware, they all turned out to be about the right size. And so if there was anything we didn't know, It certainly wasn't hurting us much. Today we know better. While it is true that in most cases units designed by the Coe and Clevenger procedure (1) will perform satisfactorily, we now know of cases in which they don't. And during the past few years there have been many developments and advances in basic thickening theory. So there is now a lot more room for disagreement, and a whole lot more to be uncertain about. What is "thickening" "Thickening" means different things to different people. For this paper we define it to mean sedimentation behavior characterized by line settling. Solids subside with a clear line of demarcation between settling solids and supernatant. Although the supernatant will usually be clear, in some cases it may be turbid. Line settling must entail that all particles just below the pulp-supernatant interface have the same subsidence rate, so that

The University of Kentucky Mine Ventilation Manager (UKMVM) is a system that contains Level Five knowledge bases and comprises an expert mine ventilation management system. The package uses production rule language (PRL) to interpret data monitored from sensors, e.g., for airflow, temperature, and concentration of gases, in an underground mining environment. Activated from the PRL knowledge bases are Pascal subprograms which (1) organize the monitored data to set up emergency consultations, (2) display graphic representations of a mine's ventilation network with the latest sensor readings, (3) provide interactive updating of mine ventilation parameters, e.g., resistance changes, revised flow requirements, and new regulator and fan settings. Also activated from these knowledge bases are programs which (1) monitor airflow, temperature and gas concentrations from a physical mine ventilation model and (2) adjust regulator openings and fan rpm's. Thus, as an expert system the UKMVM not only presents advisory consultations for underground environmental emergencies, but also serves as an interface between the monitoring and responsive control aspects in the continuous maintenance of normal mine ventilation.

Lynn lake, Manitoha, where Sherritt has operated a copper-nickel mine since 1954, is located north of the 56th parallel approximately SOO miles north of Winnipeg. Sherritt's new, 3,000 tpd, copper-zinc Fox Mine is situated 30 miles southwest of Lynn lake. This paper focuses on the Fox Mine concentrator, hut first some background information. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited started mining operations as a copper-zinc producer in 1931 at Sherridon, Manitoba, 150 miles south of Lynn Lake. As Sherridon fizzled out development of a series of nickel-copper orebodies commenced at Lynn Lake. The Forward process was developed to treat the nickel concentrate from the Lynn concentrator. Sherritt's ammonia leaching process is now history and is expected to gain more prominence as pressure is applied to the mining industry for closer environmental control. But few are aware of the fact that the present Lynn Lake crushing plant and concentrator were dismantled in the autumn of 1951 and freighted from Sherridon by tractor train during the winters of 1952 and 1953. The copper-zinc orehody at Fox Mine was discovered early in 1961 by geophysical methods which included both airborne and ground surveys. It is part of a ,large body of massive and semi-massive sulphides consisting chiefly of pyrite; with chalcopyrite, sphalerite (containing 7-9% iron) and pyrrhotite in varying proportions which occur within a series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The total mineralized zone is a lenticular body with a minimum average length and width of 1,350 feet and 66 feet respectively, to the explored depth of 2,000 feet. The average sulphide content is 67%. Higher zinc zones are masses of pyrite grains cemented by sphalerite with lower than average copper content. Zones higher in copper and lower in zinc are slightly more quartzose. Gold and silver are present in small amounts roughly proportional to the copper content.

The bentonite industry in Europe includes both the smectite and hormite groups of clay minerals. The smectites are, essentially, a compendium of cationic differentiatable montmorillonite platelets which can be expanded in liquid media, whereas, members of the hormite group are characterized by fibrous and chain structured lattices which are non-expandable. As was pointed out in the March '78 issue of Industrial Minerals, each of the minerals in these groups has acquired a variety of names due to historic or regional usage.

The 31th annual short course ?Grouting Fundamentals and Current Practice? was held at the Colorado School of Mines, in Golden, CO June 7-11, 2010. The field demonstration portion of the course was conducted June 10 at wlh Construction Co.?s yard in Denver, CO. The full-scale field demonstration presents many types of drilling and grouting equipment in operation as well as numerous grouting methods performed under various field conditions.
