Fully mechanized top caving mining of steeply inclined extra-thick seams with variable angles has complex roof rock movement, failure, caving, and filling mechanisms. Moreover, the variable-angle coal seams make rock–equipment stability control challenging. We analyzed rock deformation and failure mechanisms, overburden bearing structures, and working characteristics of supports through physical simulations, field tests, and theoretical analysis of the no. 120210 working face of Zaoquan Coal Mine. Overburden rock movement has distinct regional characteristics, with a large caving height (to the main roof layer) in the upper area, and lower caving height (to the lower main roof) in the lower area. Support loading is regional and unbalanced along the inclined direction. The critical layer of overlying strata migrates, and bearing structures formed by breaking the critical layer exhibit cross-layer generalization along the inclination. The upper region has a cantilever beam structure in the basic roof rock layer; the lower region has an inclined masonry structure with multistage ladders in the breakage basic roof rock layer. Application of a false-inclined working face layout with the tailgate ahead of the headgate and an arc arrangement (radius 28.65 m, arc length 10–20 m) in variable angle areas, and regional control of support working resistance and top-coal caving amounts, control regional failure overburden. Safe and efficient mining was achieved, with the monthly production and recovery rates reaching 344,900 t and 85.86%, respectively. Our results expand the scope of fully mechanized top caving mining and have important theoretical and technological significance.

Boling Dome. a piercement salt dome in the Texas Gulf Coast basin is (was) the single largest deposit of native sulfur in the Western world. Total sulfur production has been over 81.000,000 long tons and the mine is still in production. Data from over 60 years of operation and 8.000+ wells reveal a salt dome rich in history as well as minerals. Sulfur mineralization and production correlate well with caprock structure and morphology. The occurrence of Mississippi Valley-type deposits in fracture zones is notable in some areas and may warrant additional study. DISCOVERY AND PRODUCTION HISTORY Boling Dome is located in the south- east corner of Wharton County, Texas, 60 miles south-west of Houston. It is a piercement type dome in the Houston diapir province. It was discovered in 1922 when the county surveyor noticed sour gas seeps along the San Bernard River (Haynes. 1942). Several companies including Gulf Production Company. Humble, Texas Company, Sun and others quickly began drilling for oil and gas. Traces of native sulfur were reported in cuttings from many wells penetrating the caprock, but the first commercial quantities of sulfur were not found until Gulf Production's E.M. Chase 3 and 4 wells were drilled in 1927. Texas Gulf Sulphur, then mining sulfur at Gulf Dome in Matagorda County, secured the sulfur rights from Gulf for $3 million in cash and half of the profits after expenses for development and construction of plant and townsite were met (Haynes, 1942). The drilling results from 200 or so Wells revealed a massive deposit destined to become the largest single source of native sulfur in North America. Original reserves were estimated at just over 46 million long tons and were increased in later years. Production by the Frasch method was begun by Union Sulphur in 1928, and continued by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in 1929, and Duval Sulphur Co. and the Baker Williams Co. in 1935. Union produced 8,009 long tons, Duval produced 571,123 long tons, and Baker Williams produced 1,453 long tons. Through its deal with Gulf, Texasgulf acquired the largest and best mineralized portion of the dome and has produced 88,544,466 long tons through 1990, and production is planned for several more years. That amount of sulfur is equivalent to a cube measuring 1,152 feet on each side, or a sulfur highway 1 foot thick, 20 feet wide and 14,479 miles long. Peak production averaged 8,376 ltpd in 1948. A price war between North American sulfur producers and Mexican sulfur producers in 1956, followed by the recession of 1957 and 1958 (Haynes, 1959) coupled with a rapid increase in mining depth to below 700 feet began a gradual production decline that was never reversed (Figures 1 and 2).

This paper deals with some aspects of concrete construction in remote locations and/or cold climates. The writer's experience covers 25 years in construction in western and Central Canada. I will bring forth some pertinent observations and cost facts learned from this experience. Let us start by saying that there is nothing more important than preplanning the entire project. By this I mean the production of the engineering design, working drawings, soliciting of prices and ordering of all equipment and contractors work, the delivery of all equipment and all onsite work. All of this should be placed on a master schedule, preferably a C.P.M. We have been using C.P M. Scheduling for all of our work for 5 years and have found it in-valuable. This preliminary schedule will show initial items of work and target dates. After main equipment orders are placed and deliveries confirmed, the construction schedule can be revised to include manpower and construction equipment requirements. From this information the size of camp is determined. This, of course, must be ordered several months ahead. The manpower schedule can be broken into trades to tell us the number of men of each trade required at any time. This is important in helping to determine where the men must come from and whether or not any incentive is needed to get them. The schedule will also point out if it is impossible to get the project closed in before winter becomes too severe unless overtime is worked or the project is started in early spring. In most parts of Canada cold weather starts in October and lasts through April. A common term of reference has been to wait for the frost to come out of the ground before starting work in the spring. Researchers have long speculated regarding the adsorption state of collectors on mineral surfaces. Only recently have analytical techniques become available which allow direct in-situ analysis of adsorbed layers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IRJIRS) with reactive internal reflection elements allows for unobtrusive investigation of the adsorbed layer (Harrick, 1979). This technique has been used both for the in-situ identification of adsorbed species and for the direct calculation of collector adsorption density in real time from infrared spectral data (Miller and Kellar, 1988). The reactive mineral IRE serves both to internally reflect the infrared light and to act as a substrate at which collector adsorption can be monitored. Shown in Figure 1 is a schematic of light being internally reflected in an IRE. As the light is totally reflected at the interface, an evanescent wave propagates a short distance (typically a few microns) away from the IRE, and sampling of the interfacial region occurs. Because of multiple internal reflections, great sensitivity can be obtained. Flotation systems for which this method has been demonstrated include CaF2/oleate, Al2O3/ dodecyl sulfate, CaCO3/oleate, ZnS/xanthate, and KCl/octylamine (Miller and Kellar, 1988; Kellar et al., 1989, 1990; Miller et al., 1990).

The presence of misplaced ultra-fine particles has been shown to decrease the separation efficiency of unit operations used in coal preparation. Although the classification of fine coal was considered to be adequate for the needs of the coal industry during the 1970's and 1980's, it has become apparent that further improvements in the yield/ash/moisture relationship achieved by coal preparation plants will require increased efficiency in this size separation step. This paper describes the issues which are evolving in this area, and the capability of current and developing techniques to address the problems which need to be overcome.

If you believe that the goal of the space program should be a permanent, manned presence in space, then you believe in space mining. Historically, mining has been an integral part of the frontier. For the space frontier, mining is absolutely necessary. Any large-scale space facility must be built from materials mined in space. The reason is simple: the cost of getting material off the earth overwhelms all other costs. The cost of launching a pound of material from earth into low earth orbit ranges from $5000 to $10,000. Multiply this number by three to get to geostationary orbit. With the added expense of landing on the moon, an object is worth more than its weight in gold. Most space projects are impossible if materials must be hauled out of earth's enormous gravity well. For example, habitats (large structures in free-fall that simulate earth's gravity) and massive solar power satellites will take millions of tons of material to construct. Transportation economics alone dictate space as the source for oxygen, construction materials, and metals, among others. Space mining is not concerned with introducing materials for terrestrial use. The need for materials in space is infinite. The challenge for the mining industry is enormous.

After a number of years of engineering and operating assignments and through many types of evaluations, the need for a simple analytical method of evaluating mine haulage alternatives became obvious. Haulage, like 50 many other facets of mining, is generally a sequence of interconnected events that change, often drastically from mine to mine. Often the operator or the mine engineer has neither the time, manpower, facilities, or information needed to prepare a detailed evaluation. For many studies or for routine variance analysis, that detail may not be necessary. The intent of this article is to present an approach for analyzing mobile mine haulage that is simple and straight-forward. These methods are not designed to replace more formal and detailed procedures that have been developed previously and are available in our technical libraries. They are offered as a tool to be applied to preliminary designs, feasibility studies, and variance analyses where more complete detail is not warranted. These methods will eliminate combinations that are not economical or appropriate before more intensive and complete evaluations are undertaken. These methods may also be used to evaluate ongoing operations and to plan changes in those operations. This presentation describes a series of steps that have evolved for the handling of haulage evaluations. It concentrates on the factors having major impact on the results. Because the approach is a sequence of distinct steps, a case study was chosen as the best method of presentation. This case is a composite of several actual situations that have been encountered within the last few years.

Introduction It is estimated that nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in free world countries has been produced by South African operations. There is concern that this immense productive capacity will soon decline. Such a decline could reduce world gold supply and lessen the ability of market economy countries (MEC) to exert the major influence upon the world gold market. This paper addresses three general issues concerning South African gold production: • How much gold remains to be recovered from the demonstrated resources of the 44 evaluated South African mines; • How long can production at current levels continue; and • What will be its cost. Table 1 provides production data on the world's 10 largest producers for the years 1971, 1981, and 1983. As shown, South African gold production declined significantly from 1971 through 1981. As of 1981, annual South African gold production had dropped by more than 311 t (10 million oz) in 10 years. Despite this, its mines still produced 656 t (21 million oz) that year, about half the world total. From 1981 through 1983, this trend was reversed. Annual South African gold production increased by more than 21.8 t (700,000 oz). The trend reversal was also evident in the US, Canada, and Australia. This illustrates the general, inverse relationship between gold price and gold production. In South Africa especially, as gold prices increased substantially during the 1970s, the average grade of ore mined (pay limit) was lowered as new, lower grade areas and materials were exploited. Gold production declined in volume. But gold revenues increased, and the lives of the operations were extended. The 1981-83 period was one of declining (US dollar-based, average annual) gold prices that resulted in increasing South African production as average ore grades were raised. South Africa currently accounts for 50% of world production (Fig. 1). Figure 2 illustrates South Africa's contribution to total MEC production in 1971 and 1983. Although South Africa's relative share of production has declined, it still represents the single most important source of new gold supply. In 1983, it supplied more than 65% of total MEC production. South Africa currently produces more than twice as much gold as the Soviet Union (ranked second in world production), and 11 times more gold than the US (ranked fourth in world production). INTRODUCTION The early record of tunnel excavating machines in hard rock tunneling has not been one to particularly brag about. We have all heard the stories of major difficulties when trying to break hard rock with machines at promised advance rates of several times that of conventional drill and blast. Unfortunately, sometimes this has not happened. It has been through this trial of the past generations disappointments that today's TBM's have evolved to their present high level of performance in a wide range of ground conditions. Today's machines offer much increased reliability and durability. This translates into high availability to the tunnel contractor. Although there still are occasional disappointments being reported, the state of the art is that reliable and predictable machine excavation of rock now is both a reality and well founded expectation. The most recent editions of Atlas Copco's MINI/MIDI Fullfacer, we feel, make a strong contribution to the reliable performance of todays TBM's---especially in small-size rock tunnels. This report will, 1.) explain the equipment and effect of rock both on the cutting technique and machine performance; 2.) list advantages of the non-circular shape, during and after construction; 3.) list applications in civil and mining industries; 4.) discuss North American experiences, performance and costs; 5.) list advantages over drill and blast and; 6.) discuss briefly lease arrangements.

The Pioche District of Lincoln County in southeastern Nevada (Figures 1 and 2) has been an historically important producer of silver, zinc, and lead. Economic geology of districts in the Pioche area is summarized most adequately in recent reports by Tschanz and Pampeyan (1) and Gemmill (2) and only a few major aspects will be discussed here. Production in the Pioche District began in 1869 and early mining concentrated on silver-bearing fissures in lower Cambrian quartzites. In the early 1870's the Pioche District was second only to the Comstock Lode in world silver production (3). More recent mining activities have centered on the other major ore type in the area, bedded replacement of lower Cambrian carbonates by Ag-Zn-Pb sulfide ore. Production of replacement ore peaked around 1950. The present study is focused on the Pan American Mine because it is an excellent example of low grade carbonate replacement deposits, because there is little structural dismemberment, and because access was readily available. Most previous workers have suggested that both the fissure vein deposits and the bedded replacement deposits of the Pioche districts are a result of spatially related Laramide igneous activity. The purpose of this study is to determine whether ore genesis is a result of igneous activity or if mineralization might be related to late diagenetic processes such as formed Mississippi Valley "type" deposits. Stable isotopes of sulfur, carbon, and oxygen in ore and gangue minerals have been studied to determine the probable isotopic composition of the ore fluid and paleomagnetic studies of the carbonate rocks have been utilized to determine timing of mineralization. Additionally, petrographic and field studies of carbonate lithologies were undertaken in an attempt to delineate non-structural controls on ore localization. These studies are still proceeding and the results presented herein are, therefore, preliminary in nature.

Reliable prediction of wall pressures in a coal silo demands careful characterization of the stress-strain properties of the coal. This paper describes the results of triaxial compression tests on a typical fine-ground coal used in power generation and describes the fitting of several different constitutive models to the data. The fitted parameters for the constitutive models are well suited to application infinite element analyses. The different models are used to give the reader flexibility in choosing a model and to show the shortcomings of some models. To explore the quality of the fitting process, the fitted results are compared with finite element predictions of the triaxial test itself.

There is now overwhelming evidence that, despite concerns to the contrary, natural degradation of cyanide and cyanide attenuation by hydrogeochemical processes are capable of minimizing or eliminating potential water qua1ity impacts from heap leach systems. A1 though there was some recognition of these data by the regulatory authorities, for example the initial USEPA modification of cyanide standards to an advisory level, many states have codified standards inappropriate to the clearly site specific nature of heap leach operations. As an overview to this problem, this paper will integrate the theoretical chemical data on cyanide with the observed geochemical behavior of cyanide in the decommissioned heap leach environment. The cyanide species that are likely to exist within an abandoned heap leach system will be identified, and the relative toxicity and potential environment effect of these cyanide species will be discussed. These data will then be used to evaluate cyanide detoxification regulations for decommissioned heap leach projects in 14 states.

Experimental animal studies comparing asbestos and non-asbestos varieties of tremolite indicate tremolite asbestos is markedly more carcinogenic. By direct analogy, the differences in carcinogenicity between tremolite asbestos and non-asbestos prismatic tremolite should be the same for the other types of amphibole that also crystallize in the asbestos and non-asbestos habits. The earliest of the experiment animal studies, done more than 25 years ago, have design limitations by modern standards including the use of injection or surgical implantation as the route of administration rather than the more relevant route of inhalation. However, the differences in the carcinogenicity of amphibole asbestos and non-asbestos amphiboles are sufficiently large to be clearly discernable even with the study limitations. Together with later studies on these and related minerals, there is strong evidence of a much lower hazard associated with the shorter, thicker fibers of the non-asbestos amphiboles, than is found for the asbestos analogues of the same mineral. It is possible that the non-asbestos amphiboles are no more hazardous than other silicate minerals widely considered nuisance dusts. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Selection of tunneling method, specially the use of shielded machines for application in deep rock tunnels can be heavily impacted by presence of ground convergence and squeezing conditions. Tunnel convergence is a function of ground conditions (i.e., rock mass behavior, groundwater, in-situ stresses), size of the opening, and TBM operational parameters. The case study of Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project in Central Iran, which is under construction using a double shield TBM, is used to examine the effect of rock parameters on tunnel convergence and hence on the need for over excavation and shield lubrication to avoid problems with the shield getting stuck. Although it is impractical to perform a continuous assessment of rock mass conditions within the shield or in the lined tunnel, results of field observations and subsequent studies show that the amount of the tunnel convergence has direct correlation with the percentage of fines and large rock fragments in the muck and TBM thrust/torque/ROP. These relationships have been examined and will be presented in this paper.

Tunneling requirements are presenting designers with greater challenges. The design and construction of the 2000-ft long unidirectional twin highway tunnels for the approach to one of two bridges of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges (LSIORB) Project is no exception. Excavation under low cover, beneath an historic site, with each tunnel of 70-feet wide and 50-feet high dimensions will set precedents for US highway tunnel excavation size. To investigate ground conditions to supplement final design of the highway tunnels, an exploratory tunnel excavated through karstic limestone and shale will be located within the confines of the proposed final alignment. With the LSIORB Project, Jefferson County, Kentucky and Clark County, Indiana will have improved cross-river mobility between them. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) are developing the LSIORB Project jointly, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Section 4, one of six sections, as shown in Figure 1 is the East End Kentucky Approach and Connections to I-265. Key elements of Section 4 are the twin three-lane highway tunnels under the historic Drumanard Estate. The property is located on the north side of US Highway 42 (US 42) at the intersection with the Gene Snyder Freeway (also KY841) as shown in Figure 2. One aspect of the project consists of the excavation of an Exploratory Tunnel along the southbound alignment tunnel. At the time of preparation of this paper, KYTC has not awarded the Exploratory Tunnel Contract. This paper will focus on the planned geotechnical investigation program that will occur during excavation of the exploratory tunnel and how the design of the twin highway tunnels will incorporate the findings to achieve an innovative and efficient configuration.

The current exploration boom in Central and South America shows no sign of abating and, if anything, is growing. This is despite an inevitable cooling in the recent frenzied buying of resource stocks on the Canadian exchanges which have funded much of the Latin American exploration. Several factors appear to be driving the boom. Firstly, the resource potentials in this vast under-explored regions are nothing short of phenomenal. Secondly, after decades of stifling nationalization and restrictions that stood in the way of foreign investment, especially in mining, emerging nations the world over now suddenly find themselves competing with each other to be the most attractive.

Gold ores containing antimony suffer from poor recoveries of gold in cyanidation due to the impact of antimony on the cyanidation process. Techniques such as lowering the pH for cyanidation can improve gold recovery, nevertheless a limit can be reached where high cyanide consumption makes traditional processing uneconomic. The paper outlines a process for the pre-treatment of gold-antimony concentrates to remove the antimony resulting in a low-antimony content gold-bearing residue suitable for efficient treatment for gold recovery through cyanidation. This hydrometallurgical process produces a by-product credit of commercial grade antimony trioxide as Senarmontite that can significantly offset the cost of the pre-treatment.

Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. A paper was presented during the 1970 SME Fall Meeting on the Stinson Preparation Facilities by representatives of Beaver Creek Consolidated Cool Company and Heyl & Patterson, Inc. This paper summarized a combined approach to development of a flow diagram and selection of cleaning equipment required to produce a uniform metallurgical coal at maximum recovery with special emphasis on sulphur reduction. These facilities were located in the Elkhorn. Coal Fields of eastern Kentucky and, in particular, the area of Wayland, Knott County, Kentucky, where approximately forty-five- million tons of Elkhorn No. 3 coal could he recovered. The facilities incorporated a Bradford Breaker for reduction of the ROM coal to minus 1-1/2 x 0, 6000 ton-raw coal storage, preparation plant, water clarification and thermal drying facilities, clean coal storage and a 4000 TPH unit train loading facility.
