The Lornex mine is located on the Southern slope of the Highland Valley in South Central British Columbia. The large low grade deposit was discovered in 1964; stripping began in 1970, and the mill started commercial production in October of 1972. The orebody is classified as a complex porphyry type having as major constituent quartz diorite, with varying amounts of quartz, grano diorite, and porphyry. A substantial degree of alteration is evident in the host rock, and this became the key factor in major equipment selection for the grinding section. A pilot plant was constructed on the property capable of treating 100 TPD of ore. The ore was mined to be as representative as possible of the entire orebody by sinking a shaft and cross cutting the deposit underground.

The most abundant fuel resource in the U.S.A. is also the most under-utilized. Proven reserves of bituminous coal, sub-bituminous and lignite constitute from 60% to 90% of our total fossil fuel reserves -- dependent upon the parameters used by the analyst making the estimate. Despite this ample supply, bituminous coal provided only 20% of U. S. energy consumption in 1967 and 1968, this dropping to 17.57 in 1971 and 1972. By 1978, according to my projections, 16.7% of the Nation's mechanical energy will come from bituminous coal. However, our energy needs are growing at such a rate that the 20.6% provided by bituminous in 1967 equalled 480 million tons while the 16.7% of U. S. consumption visualized for 1978 will require nearly 650 million tons. In order to view coal's position with perspective in this developing energy crunch, it is necessary to examine the total energy situation. To this end, I have prepared a couple of tables which you should have before you. I chose this procedure rather than slides because I would need to utilize an entire wall to make the data visible to an audience. Therefore, I refer you to the long sheet entitled "U. S. Energy Consumption - Trillion Btu - 1967-1978." As you can see from the heading, I am confining my treatment of the problem to the intermediate term. In the long run, if we are willing to pay the cost, we can do a lot of things, including the complete conversion of coal into a sulfur-free fuel.

Editor's Note: For purposes of uniformity throughout this book, Coal Preparation, 5th Edition, the editors have advocated the use of the U.S.A. Sieve Series of testing sieves (see Table 6-2) as the testing sieves of modem choice. The adoption and use of the U.S.A. Sieve Series and its forerunner, the Tyler Standard Screen Scale, has for over seventy-five years introduced uniformity into reports; has simplified the comparison of results; and has provided control for operation of modem coal preparation circuits. While a full explanation of the differences, and more importantly the similarities of these two measuring systems cannot be stated here, it is felt that a brief clarification of terms is in order. The difference between the U.S.A. Sieve Series and the Tyler Standard Screen Scale Sieve Series is the identification method. Tyler Screen Scale sieves are identified by mesh designation with the width of opening varying by the square root of two, or 1.414 times the width of opening in the previous sieve. The U.S.A. Sieves are identified by openings in millimeters or microns and also arbitrary numbers which do not necessarily mean the mesh count; this series uses width of opening variations in the order of approximately the ratio of the fourth root of two, or 1.189. Tyler Standard Screen Scale and U.S.A. Sieves can be used interchangeably, and to avoid confusion the nameplate of all Tyler Screen Scale sieves show the U.S.A. Number, while all U.S.A. Sieves show Tyler Screen Scale mesh equivalent numbers on the nameplate. INTRODUCTION Sizing is the process of separating mixed mineral particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles range between definite maximum and minimum sizes. This chapter applies the modem mechanical screen and the liquid-solid cyclone (hydrocyclone) to the process of sizing solid particles as applied to coal preparation. Screening is a mechanical process that separates particles by size. Modem coal preparation is made possible by efficient sizing. Sizing of coal is defined in terms of the opening through which an individual particle will or will not pass, or as two openings, the larger of which passes the particle and the smaller of which retains the particle. Screening accomplishes sizing by passing coal of a wide range of sizes through a series of screens, each of a decreasing size. The individual screen discharges are then directed into different screen products for subsequent sale or processing. Screening in modem preparation plants is done for the following reasons: 1. Removal of fine coal before a size reduction step. 2. Size separation of the coal into a coarse and fine fraction for sized products or for processing in coarse and fine coal circuits. 3. Recovery of heavy media from heavy media coal cleaning circuits.

Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.

INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

This presentation describes the operation and features of the WCC Carbon Reactivation Kiln. Particular emphasis is placed on minimizing carbon losses, corrosion resistance, fuel efficiency and the fate of mercury during reactivation in the multiple-tube vertical retort. Detailed laboratory work indicates that there is complete vaporization of mercury in the kiln, no refluxing in the upper sections and distinct advantages in using this type of kiln when sizing collection equipment.

The Buckskin Mountains Tunnel is a key link in the Bureau of Reclamation's Central Arizona Project. The 22-foot (6.7-m) diameter tunnel is being bored in a north-northwesterly direction through volcanic rock near Lake Havasu in western Arizona. The 6.9-mile (11-km) conveyance tunnel will carry up to 3,000 cfs (85 cu m per sec) of water through the Buckskin Mountains as part of the Granite Reef Aqueduct. The water for the project will be drawn from Lake Havasu behind Parker Dam on the Colorado River and pumped some 800 feet (244 m) above the lake to the inlet portal of the free flow tunnel where it begins its 190-mile (300-km) journey to Phoenix, Arizona, and beyond into Orme Reservoir (figure 1). Precast concrete segments are being used as a single system initial support and final lining in the tunnel being excavated by a tunnel boring machine specially designed and built for the job by The Robbins Company. J. F. Shea Company, Inc., of Walnut, California, is constructing the tunnel for the Bureau of Reclamation.

The paper investigates the capture and recovery of rare earth minerals from Bayan Obo ore using superconducting magnetic separation. A finite element model (FEM) was established to study the influence of various factors on the capture of rare earth minerals under a high-gradient superconducting magnetic field. The study aims to improve the efficiency of rare earth mineral separation and recovery.

Rusk County is located in the northwestern portion of the state of Wisconsin, roughly 130 miles east of Minneapolis (Figure 1). The topography is generally flat with dairy farming the principal activity. Forest and swamp lands are common, as well as pasture and cultivated ground. Rusk County falls near the southern terminus of the Precambrian Shield and is covered by a thick layer of glacial drift. Outcrops are quite rare, but the few available exposures indicate that the subsurface is comprised of steeply dipping metamorphosed volcanics and sediments of Early Proterozoic age. A thin section of flatlying Cambrian sandstone is sometimes found directly under the glacial till. The depth to Precambrian basement has been recorded to be as great as 150 feet beneath the surface.

East Side Access (ESA) will extend Long Island Rail Road into midtown Manhattan via 11 km of tunnels, a new terminal station and associated rail support facilities. The hard-rock tunneling in Manhattan will traverse under Park Avenue and some of the most historically and commercially significant real estate in the world. The soft-ground tunneling in Queens will traverse beneath Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard and the Harold Inter locking, the busiest rail interlocking in North America. This paper details ESA’s program-wide geo-instrumentation monitoring system for obtaining, processing and presenting all geotechnical monitoring data. Data streams will be real-time, such as from automated total stations, and manually read, such as from optical survey instruments and handheld data loggers. All data will be input into a web-based Geo-Instrumentation Data Management System, which will be accessible to project stake holders via ESA’s intranet or via the Internet using remote access controls.

Bord and pillar mining at shallow depth (400 m approx. maximum) is widely used in South African coal mines. One of the problems encountered in extracting coal in this manner is the ventilation of advancing bord and pillar headings. The traditional ventilation methods of force, exhaust and overlap (force/exhaust) are reasonably effective but tend to be both cost and labour intensive. Ducting often restricts the available free area of roadways thus impeding the transport of coal and other materials inbye the coal production section. Due to the above facts, ductless fans are currently being used to minimize the amount of ducting required in advancing sections. Two different types of fans are used, namely, vortex fans and the so-called `jet' fans. Vortex fans were developed from the fan blade design used for vertical take-off aircraft. The fans have the capability of delivering air over distances of about 30 m in the underground situation without any ducting attached to it. Jet fans are standard axial flow fans fitted with outlet reduction pieces which increase the velocity pressure at the discharge to such an extent that the air delivery distance is improved to almost match that of vortex fans. The paper describes some applications of both these fan types in advancing bord and pillar sections.

Olivine was first described and named by Warner in 1790. It is an olive green to greenish gray colored magnesium-iron silicate containing a mixture, in solid solution, of fosterite (Mg2SiO4) and fayalite (Fe2SiO4). Ratios between fosterite and fayalite in olivine are somewhat variable, but in general olivine contains at least 85% fosterite. Specific gravity is variable also, depending on the ratios of fosterite to fayalite. As a rule it is in the 3.2 - 3.4 range. All commercial olivine is obtained from the rock dunite, the most basic member of the peridotite group. Dunites, in addition to being composed primarily of olivine, generally contain assessory pyroxenes and spinels (chromite and magnetite). Dunites', when altered by hydrothermal solutions or metamorphism, often contain alteration minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite, vermiculite and amphiboles. In the 1930's and 40's considerable research was conducted on olivine for use as a refractory, plant food raw material, magnesium source for metal, and a source for magnesium chemicals. This research met with only limited success.

Biomineralization of manganese on titanium condenser material exposed to seawater has been illustrated. Biom-ineralization occurs when the fouling components, namely, the microbes, are able to oxidize minerals present in water and deposit them as insoluble oxides on biofilm surfaces. Extensive biofilm characterization studies showed that an alarmingly large number of bacteria in these biofilms are capable of oxidizing manganese and are, thereby, capable of causing biomineralization on the condenser material exposed to seawater. This paper addresses studies on understanding the exact role of the microbes in bringing about oxidation of manganese. The kinetics of manganese oxidation by marine Gram-positive manganese oxidizing bacterium Bacillus spp. that was isolated from the titanium surface was studied in detail. Manganese oxidation in the presence of Bacil-lus cells, by cell free extract (CFE) and heat-treated cell free extract was also studied. The study confirmed that bacteria mediate manganese oxidation and lead to the formation of biogenic oxides of MnO2, eventually leading to biomineralization on titanium surface exposed to seawater.

Currently, around 100 million tons of construction materials and aggregates are shipped annually by rail. And recently, producers are looking much more carefully at rail not only to reduce fixed costs through increased volume, but also to eliminate operating headaches, such as increasing community pressures about trucks on the road, noise and dust. Many producers are uncertain as to how to enter the rail shipping business since railroads have historically been reluctant to ship small quantities short distances. This article provides strategies to help producers examine and pursue moving their rock by rail.

Water-swellable layered silicates, namely, the smectite clays can remove suspended materials (called herein as debris) and metal ions from aqueous streams. The present study shows that the flocculating and metal extracting abilities of smectite clay-based flocculants can be enhanced when these clays are used in conjunction with a specific anionic polymer. Such performance enhancement is attributed to the following: i) the clay-dispersing ability of the polymeric additive, that would translate into an increase in the clay-surface area available for the attachment of the debris particles onto the clay particles; ii) the possibility of dispersant-to-coagulant transition of the polymer during the later instants of the treatment process, as a result of reduction in solvency of the wastewater for the polymer due to the release of cationic species from the clay-based flocculant solids; iii) metal-complexing ability and adsorption properties of the polymer.

Available literature on the effect of re-entrainment on overall airborne dust concentration in mine airways or the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust re-entrainment in mine atmosphere is scant. Therefore, as part of the Respirable Dust Center's ongoing research, a three part study was envisaged: study of the re-entrainment phenomena of anthracite and bituminous coal dust particles in a wind tunnel under the influence of varying air velocities; study of the same in the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the USBM with both airflow and walking by personnel causing re-entrainment; and mathematical modeling and computer simulation of the re-entrainment phenomenon. In this paper, results from the re-entrainment studies in the wind tunnel and the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine are presented. Further, the results from the wind tunnel studies are compared with the results from in-mine studies conducted at the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the USBM. Comparing the results from the two studies it was observed that increasing air velocity increased the rate of re-entrainment, but increased time of exposure decreased the airborne dust concentration. Compared to same size particles, a mixture of sizes created more airborne dust concentration when re-entrained. It was also observed that contribution of airborne dust concentration due to airflow was negligible compared to the contribution due to walking.

The Illinois State Geological Survey's program in industrial minerals is twofold-the gathering of information on mineral raw materials and the generation of data on the use of these materials. The first function is carried out by the Industrial Minerals Section and the Clay Resources and Clay Mineral Technology Section of the Geological Group, and the second is the responsibility of the Chemical Engineering Section of the Chemical Group. Gathering in formation on raw materials includes both mapping of resources and fundamental geological research. Recent and current research projects include studies relating lithologies of limestones to their physical properties, investigation of sulfur dioxide reactivity of various types of limestone, lithostratigraphic studies of limestones of Mississippian age, investigations of heavy minerals in Cretaceous, Tertiary, and Pleistocene sands, studies of the environments of clay deposition, electron microscope studies of clays and limestones, and investigation of long-term expansion in ceramic products. A relatively recent development that relates more to dissemination of information than to research is environmental geology. This affects the Survey's industrial minerals program chiefly by stimulating the study of rock and mineral resources in metropolitan areas and reporting the results for the land- use planner as well as the engineer or mineral producer. The Survey's program of research on the use of industrial minerals was expanded and diversified in 1966. Incorporating a minerals beneficiation lab, the program is designed to develop new uses for existing mineral resources and to assist producers in implementing these ideas: Projects of the minerals engineering program have included the separation of a feldspar concentrate from certain glacial outwash and river sands, recovery of kaolinite from the waste from silica sand operations, development of the use of an Illinois clay as a binder for pellets, and investigations into the use of fly ash and fluorspar mine tailings.

Reducing the number of roof fall injuries is a goal of the NIOSH mine safety research program. Central to this effort is the development of assessment techniques that will help to identify the nature of the risks associated with working under potentially hazardous roof conditions. This paper discusses a method to determine the roof fall risk using a qualitative risk analysis technique. The ability to determine roof fall risk has been a long-standing goal of safety professionals and can provide the kind of information, needed by on-site personnel responsible for worker safety, to mitigate roof fall injuries.

Continuing interest in processes that will effect separations in the fine particle size range has prompted intense interest in the use of high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) for beneficiation of uranium ores. Some of the uranium minerals are paramagnetic and hence are amenable to concentration by HGMS. This paper presents a brief review of the problems associated with uranium ores beneficiation, a description of the HGNS process, and the effects of the parameters--pulp velocity, field strength, matrix loading and magnetic field gradient on product recovery and grade. Unsatisfactory separation of uranium minerals by HGHS is related to ore specific properties such as lack of liberation, fine dissemination of uranium minerals, uniform distribution of magnetic minerals throughout the ore matrix and interference of micron sized slimes. Experimental techniques to identify and resolve some of these problems are outlined.

INTRODUCTION The project described in this paper is designed to provide a standard and flexible method by which data can be exchanged among different systems and packages in common use for geo- logical modelling and mine planning, with substantial savings in ad hoc programming which is expensive and produces interface software that is difficult to maintain. Such packages include specialised applications such as Vulcan, Surpac, Datamine, and Gemcom software, and the Whittle pit optimisation programs, and more general products such as AutoCad, Microstation, and Maplnfo, and database management systems through a generic SQL interface. The data translator is built around the CSIRO Data Model and GeoEditor, and will make widely available the benefits of the Data Model by adding functionality to its implementation in an industry- standard language and style, with interfaces to important geological and mining software products used by the industry, while including also the visualisation and editing capabilities of the GeoEditor which provides the functional framework within which the Data Translator is developed. The Data Translator is intelligent in the sense that it is not a black-box solution but allows visualisation and validation of data during transfer; furthermore it provides a means for changing abstraction levels during the transfer operation. There have been few similar efforts to address this problem. It is not a problem which is likely to be solved in any general or long- term way by any individual commercial software vendor. THE CSIRO DATA MODEL A wide variety of software tools have entered the exploration and mining industries via different pathways. Examination of these pathways and the origins of the software illuminates the types of data transfer problems and difficulties which might occur in the day to day life of exploration and mining operations. In exploration, the focus is normally on a large area (>5000km2) which is explored primarily in two dimensions. For 20 exploration purposes, geographical information systems (GIs) software, image processing software, and, in some cases, 20 computer aided design (CAD) software have been employed. Typically, GIs soft- ware is used the most by lands and tenements personnel and government geological survey organisations, image processing software is used the most by geophysicists, and 20 CAD software is used the most by drafting and geology personnel. In contrast, within the mining environment, almost all activities have 3D character. In this realm, 3D CAD software and specialised mine planning and design software are important. Specialised mine planning and design software is similar to 30 CAD software, but typically has additional capabilities such as specialised modules for surveying, drill hole data operations, open pit design and optimisation, underground mine design, mining block model creation, and/or ore reserve calculations. Unfortunately, the different origins of the software in exploration and mining lead directly to problems in data exchange and the design of seamless software systems. These problems result from the different data management strategies employed by the different classes of software. In order to address these problems, CSIRO Exploration and Mining and CSIRO Division of Information Technology have been investigating the structure, character, and syntax of data and soft- ware present in computer-aided exploration and mining activities since early 1993. The goal of this effort is to 1) systematically ex- amine the breadth and depth of the data in use within exploration and mining, and to 2) promote a data organisation strategy which is broad enough and comprehensive enough to enable wiser soft- ware design and easier data transfer. In the short term a data model can be used to improve data transfer; in the longer term it is hoped that a data model framework will help object-oriented concepts to enter the next generation of geoscientific software. The data model is described in more detail by Power et al., 1995. THE DATA TRANSLATOR PROJECT The CSIRO Data Model provides a basis for a very wide range of applications in geology and mining. It has been developed over the past two years by a joint team from the Division of Exploration and Mining and the Division of Information Technology, and its principal purpose is to provide a comprehensive and self consistent model of the geometric and topological properties of geological and mining data. The project is being carried out by CSIRO with the support of Australian mining companies through AMIRA (the Australian Mining Industries Research Association). The data model is described in more detail by Power et al., 1995. THE DATA TRANSLATOR PROJECT The CSIRO Data Model provides a basis for a very wide range of applications in geology and mining. It has been developed over the past two years by a joint team from the Division of Exploration and Mining and the Division of Information Technology, and its principal purpose is to provide a comprehensive and self consistent model of the geometric and topological properties of geological and mining data. The project is being carried out by CSIRO with the support of Australian mining companies through AMIRA (the Australian Mining Industries Research Association). Eight companies are sup- porting the project : • North Ltd Minenco • MIM Exploration • Fractal Graphics • BHP Australia Coal • Pacific Coal • Gencor CRA Exploration The systems to be interfaced have been decided by comparing the priorities of the various sponsors, to produce a final combined priority list as follows : • Vulcan • Minescape • Micromine • Mapinfo • Medsystem
