A unique freeze conditioning agent (FCA) which functions by forming structurally weak ice rather than suppressing the freezing point of water has been successful in alleviating frozen coal problems. Frozen coal treated with FCA has been quickly unloaded at temperatures below -17.SoC (O°F). Other areas where FCA has found utility has been de-icing conveyor belts, idler, idler arms and other moving parts that have been impeded by ice.

Economic geologists faced with the task of evaluating phosphate rock deposits find it necessary to deal with a unique and a lengthy list of geologic, chemical, and economic factors before they can determine whether the deposit does, or does not, constitute "ore". The underlying fact is that phosphate rock concentrate sells at a price per ton that is among the lowest for all mineral commodities. A recent going price for a standard grade (i.e. 72% BPL) phosphate rock concentrate F.O.B. Tampa is $6.00 per long ton. This compares with sand and gravel's price of about $5.00 and $8.00, respectively, per ton. In the case of many, if not the great majority of mineral deposits, the evaluating geologist needs to concern himself principally with the fundamental and classic considerations of tonnage and grade. Barring some very unusual metallurgical problem any geologist that finds say 50 million tons of 1% copper rock, or substantial tonnages of 0.7% U308 sandstone, pretty well knows he has an ore body! Certainly the evaluation of phosphate rock starts with tonnage and grade. Any rock with less than about 10% P205 in the ground is generally ruled out as ore, on the basis of grade alone. Since nearly all phosphate rock operations must be of the large-tonnage, low-unit-value type, the tonnage of new reserves, to be considered as "ore", ought to be in the 100-million + class. A new seven kilometer long subway line is being constructed through dense glacial soils under a major thoroughfare in Toronto. Eductor, deep well and vacuum wellpoint systems are being used to lower the water levels by as much as 16 metres for the construction of the twin tunnels and associated structures. The design and performance of the dewatering systems will be described. Unanticipated difficulties and their solution will be presented.

Previous studies on semi-soluble minerals such as calcite (1) and apatite(2) and sparingly soluble minerals such as quartz (3,4) have given evidence for significant changes in their electrokinetic properties as a function of aging time. Such changes are relevant to mineral processing operations where the crushed ore particles might not have yet reached equili¬brium with the water that it is in contact with. In order that these changes be studied under controlled experimental conditions for long periods unattended or with fairly less intermittant attention, a streaming potential apparatus with an automatic streaming system was constructed. Also, a new streaming potential cell was incorporated into the system so that the effect of temperature, a variable coming into increasing usage in mineral processing operations(5), could also be studied. Conventional streaming cells(6) cannot be safely employed to conduct studies as a function of temperature since they have many glass joints that are prone to leakage, parti¬cularly under pressure, in the course of an experiment. This paper describes the new apparatus and some typical results that have been obtained with it far temperature effects.

Asbestos, an extremely useful natural resource, has been studied extensively mineralogically and for industrial application. Its extraction from ores has been greatly improved with respect to safety in the work place. In spite of that, there is a decisive effort in many countries to ban its use on the grounds that it is a toxic substance. This action resulting in drastic decrease in production and the possibility of destroying the industry. The chelation of asbestos with organic dyes seems to be a promising way to abate its toxicity. Dyeing can be done when the fibers are slurred in water at ambient conditions in the same way as textile fibers.

Wet ground and dry muscovite mica continued to be the most commercially significant types of mica in the US. Canada's phlogopite mica and some US deposits of sericite mica have also contributed to the overall application of mica in a variety of industries. Mica's major end uses are paint, rubber, and construction material. Its value was about $30 million last year. The southern Appalachian Mountains weathered granitic bodies and pegmatites continued to be the primary US muscovite mica source. North Carolina production of mica as a coproduct of feldspar, kaolin, and lithium processing accounted for more than 60% of the total output. New Mexico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Georgia, and Connecticut accounted for the rest. Flake mica was also produced from mica schists in North Carolina and South Dakota. It is also being investigated in Ontario, Canada. Wet ground mica Wet ground mica was produced by four companies: KMG Minerals, Franklin Mineral Products, J.M. Huber Corp., and Concord Mica. KMG and Franklin Mineral Products accounted for more than 80% of the production. Wet ground mica is a highly delaminated platey powder used to reinforce solvent and aqueous system paints for increased weatherability, durability, and greater resistance to moisture and corrosive atmospheres. In plastics, it is an excellent filler and reinforcing agent, providing better dielectric properties, heat resistance, and added tensile and flexural strength. In the rubber industry, wet ground mica is used as a mold lubricant to manufacture molded rubber products, such as tires. It also acts as an inert filler that reduces gas permeability. Miscellaneous uses include additives to caulking compounds, foundry applications, lubricants, greases, silicone release agents, and dry powder fire extinguishers. Wet ground mica prices range from $353 to $496/t ($320 to $450 per st) fob plant. Specialty products may be higher, depending on customer requirements. Dry ground muscovite mica Dry ground mica was produced by nine companies: KMG Minerals, Unimin, US Gypsum, Mineral Industrial Commodities of America, Spartan Minerals Corp., Asheville Mica Corp., Deneen Mica Co., Pacer Corp., and J.M. Huber Corp. Dry ground mica's primary market is wallboard joint compound. Here, it is a functional extender that improves the physical properties and finishing characteristics of the mud. It is also used in various grades as a filler in asphalt products, enamels, mastics, cements, plastics, adhesives, texture paints, and plaster. Dry ground mica became popular as an additive in oil well drilling fluids, where the mica flakes platey nature helps seal the well bore, preventing circulating fluid loss. But oil's dramatic price drop and consequent curtailing of well drilling brought this once booming market to a virtual halt. Forecasters predict that this business will gradually pick up during the next few years and most current dry ground mica producers will again produce the oil well drilling material. Dry ground mica prices range from $110 to $420/t ($100 to $380 per st) fob plant. High quality sericite mica, sometimes referred to as an altered muscovite, was mainly produced by two US companies. Mineral Industrial Commodities of America and Mineral Mining Corp. have equivalent capacities of about 27 kt/a (30,000 stpy). The majority of the material produced was consumed by the joint compound industry. Minor uses are in paint and oil well drilling. The lack of ground sericite penetration into the traditional ground muscovite markets is attributed to high silica content, typically in excess of 20%, and a bulk density. Prices range from $88 to $187/t ($80 to $170 per st) fob plant. Phlogopite mica is a dark colored, magnesium bearing mica rarely found in the US. Suzorite Mica Corp., a division of Lacana Petroleum, mines a deposit in Quebec that is 80% to 90% phlogopite. The dark color has prevented the material's entry into the traditional paint markets. But the physical properties and high purity make it useful as a low-cost reinforcing filler in many plastics and several asphalt applications. Phlogopite mica is ground to several grades and may be treated with various surface coatings for use in plastics or coated with nickel for EMI/RFI shielding applications. Prices for phlogopite products range from $144 to $580/t ($104 to $580 per st) fob plant. As in recent years, production of domestic muscovite sheet - block, film, and splittings - remained insignificant. These resources are limited and uneconomic due to the high cost of hand labor required to process sheet mica in the US. Imports from India and Brazil were the primary sources of the estimated 1 kt (2.4 million lbs) valued at $2.5 million consumed by US electronic and electrical equipment manufacturers in 1986. In the context of this session on "Practical Placer Mining," a projection of the present into the future first assumes that there is a future for Placers. The second assumption is that there is the combination of adequate reserves and a willing, mining investment source to finance placers. This paper will point out the opportunities on both assumptions, illustrating my positive position on the future of gold placers. In order to focus this paper more effectively, I have chosen GOLD as the subject mineral. However, it is recognized that much of the technology for exploring and mining gold placers has been applied to other alluvial deposits; including platinum, diamond, tin, and various industrial minerals (which are often referred to as "placers" though this contradicts historical definitions). Over the past 10 years I have presented several papers on the general subject of placers, most of which are listed under References. These have included topics such as exploration, evaluation, small-scale gold placer mining and decision-making, mining and processing equipment designs, and dredge-mining operations. In an attempt to identify the more promising, undeveloped placer potentials in the world I have usually mentioned the USSR and China but qualified them as being either inaccessible, or, politically difficult to obtain. However, with recent developments in the USSR, the obstacles appear to be somewhat diminished.

Research is being conducted toward making underground mining equipment autonomous. This will facilitate improvements in safety by relieving workers of dangerous tasks and will increase production by providing more accurate control with less down time.. A Bureau of Mines developed microcomputer network has enhanced this research by permitting a group of diverse computers to interact with a mining machine as well as with each other over a common data link. The network is composed of specially integrated off-the-shelf hardware and industry-standard operating system and programming languages. Using the network, researchers can conduct various experiments with the mining machine using a diverse group of intelligent sensors, computers, and microcontrollers. Descriptions of the mining machine, the mining machine control computer, control algorithms, -the microcomputer network architecture, and communication protocols are discussed.

The mining industry appears to be slowly rebounding. But many individuals and company officials are still smarting from the beating they received during the recent recession. As a result, companies have taken the "lean and mean" approach. As pointed out at the Oct. 24-26, 1984 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Denver, CO, companies are placing more emphasis on optimizing their operations through more efficient mining and processing technologies and equipment. Empathizing with the mining industry's woes was the meeting's welcoming luncheon speaker, John D. Withrow, Jr., executive vice president product development for Chrysler Corp. Withrow paralleled Chrysler's problems of a few years ago with the current problems facing the US mining industry. He said Chrysler's come-back centered around its engineering and technical personnel, who regained "their seat at the head table." "In short," Withrow said, "we had lost the competitive edge. By cutting costs and people and improving our products we got everybody to believe we could." The 2700 participants at the Fall Meeting attended technical sessions geared toward turning mining back into a productive and profitable industry. Sessions and symposia included papers on precious metals extraction, crushing and grinding innovations, geomechanics, environmental control, health and safety, and various commodities. This article briefly highlights some of the papers presented. To order preprints of these technical papers, see ME, December 1984, pages 1620 and 1621. Computers Gain Mining Acceptance High tech has reached mining. As evidenced by many papers, computers have become valuable tools in many applications. These include tailings ponds operation and waste management; truck dispatching; mine design, simulation, and scheduling; monitoring; and reclamation. Mine planning is generally labor intensive and requires a considerable amount of the planner's time. P. K. Chatterjee, X. Chung, and Y. Jianjy described a computer-generated interactive graphics approach to under-ground coal mine planning that lessens the manhours involved in producing plans. The computer program examined exploratory borehole information. This included coal seam thickness, tonnage, quality constraints, and the nature of their distribution. Layout designs were then initiated and a probabilistic simulation performed to determine production levels of different extraction strategies. The interactive graphics approach gives planners the ability to quickly evaluate several layout alternatives and select the best one. For surface coal mines, M. A. White, of Arch Minerals Corp., explained several computer programs that aided in his company's surface mine plans. Several drill hole database and modeling pack¬ages are available. But Arch tech¬nicians developed specific pro¬grams for model strip areas. They were used to form long-term pro¬jections for various area and semi¬area stripping operations. They also generated reports on yard¬age, tonnage, quality, and ratio in¬formation. The information is used in budgeting, to compare mine plans, and to analyze acqui¬sition candidates. While computer-based truck dispatching systems have been used in mining for some time, earlier systems were run on ex¬pensive mainframe or high per¬formance minicomputers. As such, computer-based truck dis¬patching systems have been too expensive for all but the largest mines. Recently, however, a microcomputer-based system, af¬fordable to smaller mine opera¬tors, has become technologically feasible. Y. C. Kim and W. E. Kolb re¬ported on a simulated microcom¬puter system that uses strategi¬cally placed signposts in the pit area to automatically detect truck movements. A microprocessor in the signpost sends information to the microcomputer. The computer determines the truck's assign¬ment and alerts the dispatcher. He radios the driver his assign¬ment. INTRODUCTION The headrace tunnel in Amlach is part of a hydro electric power scheme near the city of Lienz in south west Austria. The project is owned and developed by Tiroler Wasserkraftwerke AG, the regional electrical supply utility. The construction work was divided into seven contracts for the entire scheme. The power output will be 60 MW, this being developed from a head of 370 m and water flows of 20 m3/s. The water will be tapped from the river Drau and lead through a 22 km long headrace on the south side of the Puster valley through the Lienzer Dolomiten mountain range. Contract No. 4, which is a joint venture between Mayreder, Züblin, Strabag, Rella and Innerebner, involves the construction of 13.5 km of the headrace. It was decided to bore this from one single adit, which probably makes it the longest pressure tunnel driven from one side by a TBM. (See Fig. 1.) For the tunnelling an Atlas Copco Jarva MK 12 TBM was chosen. The excavation diameter is 3.90 m, with the final lined diameter being in the range of 3.20 to 3.40 m. The back-up is a 145 m long single track rail system supplied by Mühlhäuser (Germany). Side-tipping cars with a capacity each of 8.2 m were used for removing the muck. When discussing stock market investments, a company's performance is important. But so is the financial community's perception of that performance. To be sure, a good product or service, coupled with sound manage¬ment, remains important but is no longer enough. How stock analysts view a company's performance has become equally important. A major task of a mining company's investor relations officer, then, is to build and maintain a positive perception of the company to mining analysts throughout the world. That's a tough assignment in any market. The subject here, though, is gold. And, with its weakened price, gold companies must work harder to convince analysts their company is still a good investment. The analyst, on the other hand, must see through the corporate hype and decide whether it's worth recommending to clients as an investment. No simple task, either. Annual reports, 10-K forms, and quarterly reports only tell part of the mining company's story. Site visits, complete with discussions (sometimes interrogations) with a mine's principals, oftentimes tell an analyst more about a company's investment potential than the annual or quarterly report. So it was that three of the nation's major gold companies arranged a three-day tour of their gold operations in Nevada for a group of 22 analysts and a pair of mining industry scribes. The analysts represented investment houses the US, Canada, and England. The host companies and mines visited included FMC Gold's Paradise Peak mine, Amax Gold's Sleeper and Wind Mountain mines, and Battle Mountain Gold's Surprise and Fortitude mines.

Many of the world?s largest existing mines are considering substantial step changes in production volumes, compensating for declining ore grades while trying to address increases in world demand for resources. The natural configuration of coal deposits allows for many mine development openings along the strike to access the ore body and thus increase volume. Similarly, with iron ore the nature of the deposits means that additional capacity can easily be added by opening up new mesas and providing extensions to infrastructure. On the other hand most of the non-ferrous metaliferous deposits form vertically and additional extraction volume comes from increasing depth. Underground mining from the base of the strata allows for large extraction rates, but block or panel caving operations develop at rates dictated by the geophysics of the overlying strata and the need for massive tunnelling developments to establish sufficient extraction points for high volumes. For really big mine production capacity, open cast mining still allows the easiest development of more massive mining techniques. But there remains the question of whether there are limits to how large an open cut mine can become in terms of throughput?

In recent years, the biosolubilization of rock phosphates by phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms has become a major topic of research studies. However, the microorganisms used in previous studies were mostly single and known species, and studies seldom focused on mixed communities of microorganisms or microbial consortia from natural environments. In this study, a microbial consortium from rhizospheric soil was used to solubilize two different compositions of medium- to low-grade rock phosphates — designated as ore samples 1 and 2 — in a laboratory-scale bioreactor. The microbial consortium showed good growth in the bioreactor, reduced the suspension pH and released soluble phosphates from the ores. Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed the action of the microbial consortium on the ore surface. There was considerable corrosion on the ore surface, and 3.42 and 4.93 percent of the element phosphorus was removed from ore samples 1 and 2, respectively. Microorganisms were sampled from the bioreactor for the analysis of their community structures by Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing. The analysis show that the suspensions added with different ore samples had different microbial diversities and richness. This study provides new insight into the biosolubilization of rock phosphates by a microbial consortium directly taken from rhizospheric soils.

The competitiveness of the EU manufacturing industry has come to the forefront of EU politics. The systematic monitoring of developments and the review of the state of the competitiveness of economies and enterprises was identified as an essential component in this process. Work is currently being carried out within Enterprise and Industry Directorate-General in order to analyse the different factors that influence the competitiveness of the non-energy extractive industry. Such an assessment should help to identify policies and actions which could contribute to and enhance the competitiveness of the industry. Assessing the competitiveness and sustainability of the industry implies the need for reliable, consistent data. One important example of how this need is being addressed, is the development of sustainable development indicators (SDI) for the EU non-energy extractive industry. These seek to monitor the industry’s performance and provide a platform for openness and discussion. Work was started on the development of SDIs in 2000, and the first report was published in February 2004.

The following material is excerpted from a presentation Mr. Morgan gave recently to representatives of the financial community. Introduction 1982 was a period of challenge for United States Gypsum Company because of reduced market opportunity. Housing starts for the first 10 months averaged a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1 million units, 9% below the comparable 1981 period when housing starts were the lowest in 35 years. Industry gypsum board shipments declined 9% from the already low levels of the same period in 1981. US Gypsum met the challenge with stringent cost reduction programs and aggressive action in the marketplace. In late 1981, anticipating market deterioration, the company's management adopted strategies to focus on two shortterm objectives: • Adjust operations to perform profitably in view of limited opportunities through more efficient operations and asset management. • Continue to strengthen U.S.G.'s resources and ability to take advantage of important market opportunities as the economy improves through selective expansion of production capacity in key growth markets. Concentration on these two objectives resulted in a nine month performance in 1982 that, while certainly not satisfactory by company standards, compared very favorably with that of principal competitors in terms of net earnings, margin on sales, and return on average stockholders' equity. To counteract limited market opportunities, U.S.G. focused on productivity improvement, cost reduction, expense control, and maximization of market penetration. Energy Use Improving performance encompassed all segments of operations. For example, efficient use of energy was a significant factor despite lower operating rates at most plants. Overall, in the third quarter of 1982 versus 1972, the company used 27% less energy per unit of production, a savings of $15 million in that quarter alone. These continuing improvements helped to partially offset constantly rising energy costs. A number of operations achieved superior results in the first nine months of the year compared with the same period in 1981. For example, gypsum board plants in Jacksonville, FL, and Sweetwater, TX, recorded 8% and 7% reductions, respectively, in energy use per unit of production. Paper mills in Oakfield, NY, Galena Park, TX, and Kansas City, MO, each reduced energy use more than 12%, while the Greenville, MS, ceiling products facility achieved a 16%o reduction. Safety Safety is another important element that received increased attention. U.S.G.'s safety performance over the past five years has consistently improved. In 1981 it was five times better than that of the gypsum industry; nearly 10 times better than all industry as measured by the National Safety Council; and almost 20 times better than all US manufacturing as recorded by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition to human concerns, this excellent record results in significant dollar savings that directly affect company results. In 1981, U.S.G.'s pre-tax savings in claims, premiums, and related expenses were about $20 million compared to the industries in which it competes. For the first half of 1982 performance improved further, with a cumulative lost workday incidence rate per 200,000 man-hours worked of only 0.27, an all-time record. A current program of research on the explosibility of coal dust/methane mixtures is described. During the study an explosion test chamber based on a novel design has been developed. This 20 litre open chamber uses a rotating drum concept for dust dispersion and infra-red sensors for dust concentration measurement. The chamber design allows different initiators to be tested while varying methane gas and coal dust concentrations. A new approach to the determination of coal dust concentration is included with a description of a dielectric dust probe. The measurement technique is based on the change in dielectric constant as the proportion of coal dust in air between probe capacitor plates increases or decreases. Characterization of coal dust samples is of vital importance. The particle size distribution, coal proximate analysis and elemental analysis were studied. Coal dust was sourced from airborne collected samples, settled dust from mine sources and seam channel samples crushed and sized. Explosibility test results indicate that a very low concentration of coal dust can form an explosible mixture when dispersed in methane concentration of just below five percent. With low temperature initiators, the coal dust lean limit concentration rises rapidly as the methane concentration is reduced. An accurate knowledge of the potential explosion hazards of coal dust and coal dust/methane mixture is necessary to establish safe operating conditions in underground mines. The research results outlined extend knowledge in this area.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has previously established pillar design guidelines for the underground stone mining industry. These guidelines were created from an empirical database of pillar observations and were largely drawn from shallow, flat-lying mining operations. Current trends forecast a great amount of underground stone mines developing under deeper cover, higher seam dips, and more frequent multiple-seam mining configurations than in the past. The complex loading conditions and limited experience in these environments presents a substantial increased risk of ground failure. To investigate these loading conditions, NIOSH has installed a pillar and roof monitoring system at an underground limestone mine in central Pennsylvania. The mine is operating in a seam with dips ranging from 13 to 18 degrees and overburdens ranging from 275 m (900 ft) to 425 m (1,400 ft). Instrumentation installed in an undeveloped pillar and in surrounding strata is currently measuring pillar and roof behavior in response to stress redistribution during excavation. Laser scans are being used to measure ground displacement and changes in conditions associated with local mining conditions and significant geological features. Initial stress measurements show a gradual increase in stress in response to mining, and stress changes that correspond with blasts. The seismic system is operational, with calibration events signaling on each of the 18 sensors. INTRODUCTION Improving mine-wide ground control stability can help reduce the potential for catastrophic failure of underground structures. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted prior research in stone pillar design and has established fundamental pillar design guidelines for the underground stone mining industry, which resulted in the development of the S-Pillar program (Esterhuizen et al., 2011; Esterhuizen and Murphy, 2015). The data that constitute the S-Pillar program were derived from past mining experience that was almost exclusively drawn from shallow, flat-lying, single-level mining operations1. Stakeholder interactions with NIOSH researchers have indicated that increased numbers of underground stone operations are expected to mine under significantly deeper cover, with greater seam dips, and under multi-level operating conditions (Slaker and Murphy, 2016). The complex loading conditions and limited experience in these challenging environments present a substantial increased risk of ground failure. Inadequate pillar design in these new and challenging environments could result in catastrophic wide-area pillar collapses and an increased safety burden to miners working in the U.S. limestone mining industry. To develop design guidelines and prevent inadequate pillar designs for these challenging environments, NIOSH is currently conducting detailed pillar response investigations at case-study mine sites operating in challenging environments."

The development of a tool for assessing the environmental sustainability of mining facilities is described in this study. The tool is based on the analysis of basic components of the examined system, i.e., the quantities of the incoming materials and outgoing wastes, their hazardousness and scarcity, the utilization of water and energy resources, and the biodiversity. The developed tool provides both qualitative and quantitative assessment of the environmental performance of a mining facility in a broad time scales (past-present-future) and is easily applicable from non environmental experts. Moreover, relative software is developed to further support the application of the methodology. The implementation of the tool is expected to lead to an improved understanding of the environmental performance of a mining facility and more importantly identify the areas of significant environmental concern. Despite numerous empirical, numerical, and hybrid studies conducted on the subject of coal rib failure, mine fatalities related to rib failures continue to occur. To date, a standard methodology for the design of coal rib supports which can accommodate the wide range of unique conditions found in coal mines in the United States has not been developed, forcing mine operators to rely on the trial-and-error process or industrial legacy practices for the design of coal rib support patterns. In this study, to better understand the support systems' effectiveness, various rib bolting scenarios were investigated. A coal mass constitutive model is implemented to a Distinct Element Method (DEM) code, and rib factor-of-safety (RibFOS) analyses were performed by applying strength-reduction for the coal matrix and explicitly modeled face cleats. Ribs with various overburden depths and mining heights composed of solid Banded-Bright coal (BBC) were considered in this study. Different scenarios such as rib bolt length and the number of bolts were studied to quantify the effect of primary rib support density on rib stability. As a result of the unsupported coal rib analyses, a decaying exponential relationship is proposed between the mining height-overburden depth and the RibFOS. The developed coal rib models clearly show the coal-rib bolt interaction and illustrate how the addition of rib bolts restricts the movement of the coal rib. The results reveal that the strength reduction method in DEM code with the coal-mass model can aid in the development of practical primary support charts, which can help in the rib support design process.
