The broad front concept is based on the principle that gasification can be achieved more efficiently and completely from a plane broad combustion front in contrast to other geometries obtainable with current methods of gasification. By restricting combustion to a plane broad front, the ideal condition for gasification is achieved. A plane broad combustion front can be developed in coal by initiating and propagating combustion from the walls of an oriented channel and collecting product gases from another similarly oriented channel. Flow will then be directed along the highest permeability of the coal bed, the available cross-sectional area for fluid flow is substantially increased and, more importantly, the increased flow will be uniformly distributed throughout the whole mass of coal. The success of the method is greatly dependent on how well an initial and rigorous permeability survey and associated corrective measures yield a well-characterized coal bed. To maintain uniform reaction rates, the advance of the combustion front is located with pressure- or mass flow-transducers. These sensors are then connected to servo-controlled mufflers for controlling segments of the fire front which are advancing ahead of others. Finally, the development of the concept to overcome problems of roof collapse, reactant and product gas leakages, and water invasion are briefly summarized.

Rich iron ore deposits were discovered during the 1960's in the mountain range of Serra dos Carajas, State of Para, Brazil, near the headwaters of the Tocantins River some 400 miles southwest from the state capital of Belem. (See Fig. 1 and 2). The key to the successful exploitation of this deposit was the development of an efficient an economical transportation system. The rugged terrain, and the dense tropical vegetation of the Amazonian jungle and the irregular coastline with its high tidal range presented severe obstacles to the planning and building of such system. Starting in 1972 extensive surveys and studies were carried out by Soros Associates on behalf of CVRD to determine the optimum way of transporting the ore from the mine site to the markets, most of which are located overseas. Overland transportation to the coast, loading into seagoing vessels and the ocean voyage to the ports of destination was treated as an integrated system in these studies.

This article presents a novel design, called the Climax High Capacity Processor (HCP), for pre-combustion cleaning of coal. This design is particularly suitable for the plant capacities of 400 -660 TPH. The HCP is different from the conventional designs with an equivalent throughput in three major aspects: 1) the use of one large capacity HM cyclone to separate coarse and intermediate raw coal in a single circuit; 2) the elimination of the conventional secondary magnetics recovery system by use of the high efficiency Climax magnetic separators; 3) the use of "single line" piping with a minimum requirement of ancillary devices. In comparison with conventional designs with similar capacity, the HCP plant costs much less in capital investment, operation and maintenance.

The leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine has been studied using rotating disc. The variables studied J include the concentrations of lixiviants, rotation speed, pH of the solution, reaction temperature, and reaction product layer. The leaching rate was found to be independent with the disc rotating speed. The apparent activation energy was measured to be about 50 kJ/mole from 15°C to 35°C, and 30.3 kJ/mole from 35°C to 60°C. Steady-state simulation is now in current use to assist mineral processing plant design and optimization. However, the reliability of results generated by simulators has not until now been seriously investigated. A simulator supervision algorithm was designed and programmed to study both the influence of the reliability of experimental data on the accuracy of unit operation model calibration, and the influence of unit operation model accuracy on the results of direct plant simulations. An application to a grinding flotation plant is described and discussed. The approach may open the way to the quantitative analysis of the risks taken in mineral processing projects, which would be similar to the application of geostatistics to mining projects.

Introduction The recent development of rare earth permanent magnets has revolutionized the field of magnetic separation. The advent of rare earth permanent magnets in the 1980s provided a magnetic product that was an order of magnitude stronger than that conventional ferrite magnets. This allowed for the design of high-intensity magnetic circuits that operated energy free and that surpassed electromagnets in the strength and effectiveness. New applications and design concepts that focused on the mineral and metal processing industries have evolved. This technology led to the development of various magnetic separators specifically designed for mineral processing applications. Applications that were not previously considered are now being used in primary mineral upgrading, recycling and secondary recovery. Historical perspective Lodestone was the first naturally occurring permanent magnetic material known. Lodstone was most likely used to upgrade iron ore by early civilizations. By the 1600s, the early magnet technology had advanced to quench-hardened iron-carbon alloys. The practical significance of magnetic separation was formally recognized in 1792 when an English patent was issued for separating iron ore by magnetic attraction. By today's standards, carbon steel is a very poor magnet material. It is easily demagnetized and has a very low energy product of much less than I MGOe (Million-Gauss-Oerstads). This was state-of-the-art technology for almost 300 years until chromium was added to magnet feedstock, which resulted in a three-fold increase in the energy product. The well documented addition of cobalt to permanent magnets in 1917 initiated the 30-year era of "Alnico" magnets that at the time provided a superior magnetic energy product. Since then, the science of magnetism has advanced rapidly and is now considered a highly developed branch of physics and material science. Permanent magnets have had an extremely long history. Figure 1 presents a chronology of permanent magnets that illustrates the increase in energy product. Amazing developments in material science have taken place in the last two decades. The gradual advancement of permanent magnet technology was shattered in 1967 with the initial development of samarium-cobalt (rare earth) magnets. Since that time, the advent of neodymium-boron-iron magnets provided such an increase in energy product that new design concepts were considered. New avenues of study were introduced by the complexities in the material science and physics involved in describing these new permanent magnets. Furthermore, applications for permanent magnets that were previously not considered were now viable. Rare earth elements Rare earth elements have claimed the attention of scientists for the past century. These elements were originally termed "rare" because they were thought to be quite scarce. Since then, however, geological studies have shown them to be relatively abundant. The discovery and identification of rare earth elements is complicated by the inherent difficulties in separating them from each other. The rare earth elements comprise the fifteen transition elements of Group IIIB, Period 6, of the periodic table. These elements extend from lanthanum to lutetium and are commonly called the lanthanide series. Samarium and neodymium are the two most common elements used in the commercial manufacture of rare earth permanent magnets. Commercial grade rare earth magnets There are only a few common types of rare earth magnets that are considered in the circuit design for magnetic separators. Early rare earth magnets of commercial significance (introduced in 1970) consisted of the first generation of sintered SmCo5. The energy product of these magnets ranged up to 23 MGOe, which provided the initial impetus to the field of high-energy permanent magnets. Although these magnets did not produce the extremely high magnetic field strengths of current rare earth magnets, they were relatively temperature stable. Containing 66% Co, they are the most expensive of the basic commercial rare earth permanent magnets. Their use is limited today because they are being replaced by second and third generation rare earth permanent magnets.

A modified 3D Lerchs-Grossmann (LG) graph tree algorithm is presented that generates the complete set of nested maximum valued pits in a single run. This modified LG algorithm looks at the relative strength (average value) of the branches (groups of blocks). Pointers are allocated and pruned until there are no members of weaker (lower average value) branches overlying members of stronger (higher aver-age value) branches. The final set of strong branches are listed in order of decreasing strength. The pits they represent form the maximum valued convex hull for a single variable pit limit parameterization. A description of the algorithm is given along with examples of how it has been applied at Newmont.

This presentation is about a small company, Industrial Mineral Products, that was formed in 1972 with one product and one customer and by a series of value-added changes avoided disaster and increased sales many times over. The principal of the company stopped by my office in Seattle looking for industrial mineral opportunities in the Northwest. We got together and went through all the minerals in Ladoo's "Industrial Minerals" from Abrasives to Zircon to see if we could find something available on the vast holdings of the Burlington Northern. At that time one of our lessees was operating a silica sand mine near Ravensdale, Washington and indicated that he might be interested in selling out. This sounded interesting to my client and within two weeks the transaction was completed.

Haul truck fatal accidents and injuries continue to be a significant concern for the mining industry. However, the availability of high-quality training materials continues to be limited. Near-miss incident accounts, if packaged well, could help fill this gap, because for every fatality, there are hundreds of reportable accidents and thousands of undocumented near misses. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) collected detailed accounts of 21 near-miss incidents in virtual interviews with mineworkers at surface mining operations across the country. From these interviews, researchers created four simulation videos using the Unity game engine. The simulation videos bring these events to life through first-person retelling and various visual perspectives of actual events. Each video exemplifies a critical safety message and a common haul truck hazard. This paper describes the process of taking narratives and turning them into impactful visual stories using graphic simulation. NIOSH plans to co-release these simulation videos with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to the mining industry to raise awareness and ultimately help reduce haul truck-related accidents and fatalities in mining.

WHAT IS AI? It's very hard to say. Most researchers and practitioners disagree with nearly any attempted definition, but most would agree that A1 does deal with the development of computer-related methods o f problem-solving. Artificial intelligence is a discipline which seeks to emulate human anatomy and/or thought processes by applying computer science, electronics, and mechanical engineering to the development of natural language processing, machine vision, robotics, and knowledge-based expert systems. Integration of these four fields will someday produce the robots of today's science fiction. A1 addresses problems of structuring large amounts of knowledge and representing relationships with rules and semantic frameworks rather than with mathematical equations. A1 is convergent rather than divergent - - conventional conputer applications use relatively small quantities of input to generate large output, but A1 generally reduces large amounts of information to establish a few major conclusions. The development of A1 has prompted greatly increased efforts on the part of scientists and engineers to understand just how humans think, organize information, approach problem-solving, and form conclusions. Some of the more exciting and possibly far-reaching advances in A1 are coming in this more-or-less soft-science area. Thirty years of A1 research (dating from a 1956 conference at Dartmouth College at which the term A1 was coined) has already spawned many widespread, almost ordinary, products: window graphics, hand-held controllers (mouse). function menus, etc., all in an attempt to make computers and people more compatible. WHAT IS AN ES? A1 can be used to develop EXPERT SYSTEMS, which are computer programs or systems which contain knowledge and rules by which problems can be solved. or at least by which possible solutions can be suggested for very complex problems. A1 can be used to better define problems so that solutions can be found. An ES is designed not to process numbers, but to process information according to rules and logic derived from actual practice and experience. WHY AI? WHY ES? Companies are increasingly aware of the value of accumulated knowledge and experience in designing, building, operating, and maintaining the increasingly complex or expensive physical plants in any business. As knowledge branches out and becomes more specialized, the accumulated learning of a veteran operator or manager or engineer becomes a scarce resource well worth preserving. EXPERT SYSTEMS offer a means of doing that, reinforcing, not replacing, human capabilities.

The Magnetometsic Resistivity (MMR) method is based on the measurement of the low-level, low-frequency magnetic fields associated with non-inductive current flow in the earth. The traditional resistivity method maps the electrical properties of the earth by measuring the electric field caused by galvanic current flow between a pair of current electrodes. The MMR method differs from it in that the potential electrodes are replaced by a sensitive coil or magnetometer and a component of the magnetic field due to the current flow is recorded. The presence of an inhomogeneity redistributes the current flow which results in a perturbation of the electric field and, usually, of the magnetic field. The electric field immediately above a relatively conductive inhomogeneity must, by Ohm's Law, be smaller than that expected for a uniform earth. The current density in this region is also reduced but the current density within the inhomogeneity itself is enhanced so that the horizontal component of the magnetic field measured above the inhomogeneity is usually larger than that expected for a uniform earth. A method of interpretation using the magnetic anomaly was patented by Jakoskyl in 1933 but it met with little success at that time. Part of the problem was undoubtedly with the instrumentation, and only recently have robust instruments of sufficient sensitivity been developed2 and field data of good quality obtained. There are many common configurations of the potential and current electrodes in the resistivity method. Similarly, in the MMR method one or both current electrodes may be moved with the magnetometer, either horizontally or vertically ( in a bore-hole), or the current electrodes may be maintained in fixed positions and the magnetometer alone moved. Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I would like to thank Hans von Michaelis for inviting me here today to talk to you on the subject of "How to Reduce Capital and Operating Costs at Heap Leaching Projects". The comments I have to offer are based on my experiences in gold heap leaching by Newmont Gold Company in Nevada, by Newcrest in Western Australia (formerly Newmont Australia), by Minera Yanacocha in Peru, by Penmont in Mexico, by Z­Mont in Uzbekistan, by the Hochschild Group in Peru and expe­riences in copper heap leaching by Magma Copper Company in Arizona and as a consultant on several other smaller projects worldwide. These comments are a mixture of technology, ideology, philos­ophy, strategy, logic and opinions and might be looked at by many of you as "one man's view". I like to look at them as "a view from the bridge". Let me add that it doesn't bother me that you may not agree with my comments and that I would be interested in your comments or criticisms at the end of this presentation. I don't intend to discuss the details of the mineralogical and metallurgical test work. I will assume, for this talk, that the test work has been conducted very carefully and that the ore in ques­tion has been determined to be heap or dump leachable. Let's begin with a couple of don'ts! ! First, "don't build the mill until you have a mine". This might sound to many of you as fundamental but believe me it continues to happen. The minable reserves should be well known and established as being economical to mine and leach. NPVs, ROis and IRRs are fine if you can be sure of the gold price you use in your calculations. The best method is to carefully estimate the capital cost and, most importantly, the operating cost per ounce of gold recovered which should include the repayment of the borrowed capital and the interest thereon. For example, if the operating cost under these conditions is $200 per ounce, you have a project. If it is $400 per ounce, walk away f om it. Incidentally, the same prin­ciple can be applied to projects involving other metals such as silver, copper, lead, zinc, etc. The second don't is - "don't be sheep". Don't climb on the bandwagon with respect to design and operation because every­one else does it a certain way. Keep an open mind, be versatile, look for change, look for every possible innovation for reducing capital and operating costs. Beware of those who will tell you "we tried that it won't work" or "it's too expensive" or "that's a crazy idea" , <' ''what do you know about mining - you are a metallurgist aren't you" or "what do you know about metallurgy - you are a miner aren't you" or "only geologists can handle this issue". Be careful about pigeon-holing people according to their basic degree and experience. In these days of low metal prices, we need to consider everybody's ideas, as crazy as some of them might seem.

In 1976, the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) aroused concern in the mining community about the regulation of mine waste streams under RCRA. In response, the Bureau of Mines initiated research in the late 1970&apos;s that addressed mine and minerals processing waste. Research included investigating improved environmental technology for metal, coal, non-metal, and emerging industries such as oil shale, tar sands, peat, and lignite. Environmental issues escalated in the 1980&apos;s. Proposed regulations addressing control technology for mining and mineral processing wastes prompted the Bureau of Mines to become involved in 1985 in an advisory capacity to the regulatory agency, the Environmental Protection Agency. In Fiscal Year 1988, the Bureau of Mines initiated a research program designed to provide the minerals industries with cost-effective solutions for ameliorating environmental effects of mining. Bureau research has led to advances in the areas of acid mine drainage control and mitigation, subsidence prediction and control, and control and treatment of solid wastes resulting from mining and mineral beneficiation. The Bureau also conducts research seeking new methods to remediate abandoned mine lands. A discussion of the mine waste issues is presented, followed by a summary of past and present research conducted by the Bureau of Mines.

This study evaluates the roof-bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) system in an exhausting face ventilation system, demonstrating its effectiveness and illustrating the CAC protection zones. Two scenarios are considered: (1) a roof-bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof-bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment that contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by an exhaust curtain with 9,000 cfm (4.25 m3/s) of air to simulate the roof-bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s) with dust reductions ranging from 39.5 to 82.8 percent. When the roof bolter is operated close to the face, increasing CAC airflow was required for adequate protection, as the dust reductions can be as low as 39.5 percent. Increasing CAC airflows to 350 cfm (0.17 m3/s) and 450 cfm (0.21 m3/s) were evaluated, demonstrating that dust reductions increased to 59.7 percent (350 cfm) and 72.0 percent (450 cfm). These results revealed improvement in respirable dust reductions compared to the CAC airflows at 250 cfm when the bolter is operated close to the face, showing the CAC can provide protection against high respirable dust concentrations for roof-bolter operators.

Arch of Illinois is a mining complex comprised of two surface and two underground mines located in Perry County, in southern Illinois. The company a division of Apogee Coal Co. of St. Louis, MO. Arch of Illinois&apos; two surface mines, the Captain and Horse Creek Mines, use large stripping shovels and cross-pit bucketwheel excavators to remove overburden from three seams of coal, the Herrin No. 6, Harrisburg No. 5 and Danville No. 7. All are considered high sulfur reserves. The two underground operations are managed by Arch of Illinois. They are the Kathleen Mine and the newly constructed Conant Mine, which began production in 1991. Both underground mines are continuous miner operations. They mine the No. 6 coal, which is about 1.8 m to 2.1 m (6 to 7 ft) thick. All coal is currently transported by truck to a central preparation plant located at the Captain Mine. This preparation plant produces 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) of clean coal. Production in 1992 reached 5.9 Mt (6.5 million st) of saleable coal. Of that, about 66% or 4 Mt (4.4 million st) are produced by the surface mines and the rest the by under ground operations. Change is in the wind for Arch of Illinois. In 1988, 100% of all production (6.2 Mt or 6.9 million st) came from surface operations. By 1995, only 38% of production is scheduled from surface mines. And by the year 2000, 100% of production will from underground mining methods. Dwindling low ratio reserves, compounded by increasing environmental and land acquisition costs, coupled with more efficient underground mining equipment, have started an evolutionary trend toward development of underground reserves. For Arch of Illinois to maintain profitability of remaining surface reserves and to compete effectively mining underground, it must improve efficiency, productivity and cost reductions. These efforts are essential for maximizing current surface reserves and to ensure a continued existence in the presence of clean air legislation and the softening of the high sulfur coal market.

Yeelirrie lies toward the center of Western Australia, 650 km (404 miles) northeast of Perth (Fig. 1). The ore reserves have been estimated as 52.5 kt (57,871 tons) of contained U3O8, at an average grade of 0.15%, of which almost two-thirds average 0.24% U3O8. the ore body is a thin, elliptical, more or less horizontal sheet measuring approximately 9 km (5.6 miles) in length, between 0.5 and 1.5 km (0.3 and 0.9 miles) in width, and up to 7 m (23 ft) in thickness, extending from the surface to a depth of 8 m (26 ft). In spite of its near surface position, there is only one small outcrop of significant mineralization. Carnotite is the only uranium mineral recognized so far, dispersed through a calcrete horizon, and deposited from circulating ground water which was also responsible for the carbonation of the clays completely filling an Early Tertiary drainage system. Calcrete, as seen at Yeelirrie, is quite distinct from the widespread, thin pedogenic horizons, as it often forms bodies many kilometers in length and up to 20 m (65.6 ft) in thickness, elongated parallel to the drainage lines. It is variously referred to as "valley calcrete" or "ground water calcrete" to emphasize the occurrence and mode of origin. The discovery of Yeelirrie in mid-1971 was the successful culmination of a grass-roots exploration program initiated in 1968 as part of Western Mining Cop&apos;s program of diversification from its historical position as a major gold producer. The object was simply to find an economic uranium deposit - with no constaints other than those normally taken as applying in the mineral search. There was, therefore, complete freedom in the selection of the exploration model, or models, to be applied and the areas to be considered, though the choice was inevitably influenced by both the nature of world occurrences and the local geology. One of the options avail- able was the sandstone environment. Yeelirrie was the direct result of pursuing this line of investigation through three sequential, but quite distinct, stages: first, a regional study; second, establishing a case for exploring the inland drainage systems of Western Australia; and finally, an evaluation of the calcrete environment. An assessment of the potential for sandstone-type deposits in Australia necessitated going back to first principles, since there were no known precedents in this country for guiding exploration and, as a consequence, the search need not be influenced by established prejudices. Previous uranium exploration during the 1950s had been preoccupied with vein-type deposits, and, although the sandstone environment was undoubtedly being examined in 1968, no discoveries had been announced to that time. When considering the necessary ingredients -a source of leachable uranium, a circulating ground water system, and a suitable reducing environment - it could be argued that considerable areas in the eastern part of the continent were theoretically prospective, but basin depth and the extensive superficial cover of Mesozoic and Cainozoic sediments presented considerable practical difficulties.

The selective flotation of semi-soluble salts with fatty acids is often negatively affected by the interaction of the potential determining cation with the ionic surfactant in bulk solution. This problem can be avoided by floating at low pH which involves the emulsification of the collector. The research presented here focuses on the influence of the Ca2+ ion on the flotation of fluorite with palmitic acid at low pH. Our results show that the surfaces of collector emulsions are dominated by precipitation phenomena similar to those encountered in bulk. In turn, fluorite in palmitic solution at intermediate pH displays surface properties similar to those of the collector by itself. This may be due to two alternative mechanisms (i) adsorption of bulk precipitate on the fluorite surface or (ii) the formation of a bilayer of surfactant ions on fluorite. Possibly, both mechanisms occur simultaneously.
