In the Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) phase of its National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) pro¬gram, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) samples about 1400 sites for stream sediments in each two-degree quadrangle of the National Topographic Nap Series (NTMS) and about 1200 sites for ground or stream water. Through a geological/statistical analysis, we find that NURE data are useful for assessing the uranium resources of the NTMS quadrangles. Our computer-implemented System for Uranium Resource Evaluation (SURE) calculates a score for each NTMS quadrangle based on the HSSR, geologic, and radiometric data; we score the four Colorado quadrangles--Pueblo, Montrose, Durango, and Trinidad--that comprise the study area. We interpret the scores in terms of geology and the known occurrences, which include the Hanson ore deposit with reserves of 30,000,000 lbs. U308 and the Pitch mine with reserves of 1,740,000 lbs. SURE depends in part on distinguishing mineralized or metalliferous granitoids from barren ones through "geochemical signatures."

The incidence of heat stroke in the South African gold mining industry is today small (less than 1 in 10 6 shifts worked). Acclimatization and selection procedures have been developed and applied throughout the industry, underground working conditions have, and are being improved, and personnel are to-day made more aware of heat stress and its consequences than ever before. Although these actions have, over the years, brought about a steady reduction in the incidence of heat stroke (see Figure 1) the small incidence of heat stroke which persists indicates that heat stress is still a problem. This realization provides the stimulus for the work presented in this paper, which has as its primary objective the development of reliable heat stress limits for men working in South African gold mines. [ ] In keeping with recent trends3I4 the approach followed in this paper is based on the physical principles of heat transfer. Industrial Engineering in the industrial world is a relatively new field, having been conceived about the turn' of the century by Frederick W. Taylor, who was not satisfied with the hit-or-miss methods of evaluation and estimation. Through crude Industrial Engineering techniques never before used, he completely changed the bricklaying industry so that work accomplished was more than doubled. To help us better understand what we mean by Industrial Engineering, I think a very simple definition Is in order. Industrial Engineering is a scientific approach to problems in cost, production and operations: and is designed to provide a means of increasing producitivity and reducing costs through standards measurement and standardization of the best methods, practices and equipment, There are many complicated definitions, but pure and simply, it all boils down to providing the means for increasing productivity and reducing the cost. Industrial Engineering has been applied in manufacturing since Frederick W. Taylor?s time and in the last 20 years has grown in stature by leaps and bounds. It is a basic function of successful manufacturing companies and is an accepted fool firmly entrenched in manufacturing organizations. You may know of some successful manufacturing companies that do not employ Industrial Engineers as such, but someone in that organization is doing Industrial Engineering work. They have standards and controls whether they call it Industrial Engineering or not. The manufacturing industry has benefited from this tool; other wise, it would have been discontinued long ago.

Introduction "Austerity" is perhaps an overly generous description of the past three years in the American steel industry. Steel plants operated at an average of only 57% of their capability in 1982-84. The dismal losses for last year are still being totaled. But during the two years before this period, American steelmakers recorded an aggregate net loss of a staggering $6.8 billion. Steelmakers responded by closing numerous marginal facilities. And production capability was cut by 13.6 Mt (15 million st). Capital expenditures still averaged $2 billion annually. But this was inadequate to maintain the existing base of steelmaking facilities. The general economy experienced a satisfactory recovery during this period. American steel, however, continued to suffer from a lagging recovery in the capital goods sector. This was due to record penetration of its domestic market by imports and from very weak realizing prices on the volume that was available. In addition to the direct influx of offshore steel products - which itself depressed prices - the industry also became painfully aware of the growing importance of "indirect" imports. These came in the form of steel-containing producer and consumer durables. Industrial equipment and autos fabricated from foreign steel accounted for the equivalent of 6 Mt (6.5 million st) of lost market opportunity for domestic steel-makers last year. That is over and above the 23.5 Mt (26 million st) of direct steel imports. Given these factors, Inland Steel was not spared from the threeyear downpour of red ink. Despite its record of continuing modernization in steel, our single-plant location in the world's best steel-consuming market, and the high proportion of consumer durables related products, such as cold rolled and coated sheet in our mix, Inland suffered aggregate losses of $277 million during the 1982-84 period. Strategic Planning The foregoing establishes a perspective - a base from which we have restructured our view of the steel industry, and of our own role within that picture. Until possibly two years ago, this present weakness in steel demand was viewed around the world as an aberration, eventually to pass. By contrast, it is now recognized that austere times are the normal steel environment. The topic here is management of resources. This implies an emphasis on strategic planning. It is worthwhile to examine some of the more critical assumptions that were driving strategies among a number of steel companies just before the 1980s. Those projected characteristics of the future steel environment were arrived at through painstaking analysis. They were carefully and heavily quantified and were generally shared by outside observers and our peers within the steel industry. • First, the assumption was made that domestic steel demand would continue to grow at an average rate of 2% per year. • Second, it was assumed that this growth in the American market would continue to be filled predominantly by US mills. Two of the open-pit, copper-molybdenum mining operations of Duval Corporation are located in the foothills of the Sierrita Mountains approximately 30 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona. In March 1959, mining from a moderate sized porphyry deposit known as the "Esperanza orebody" was begun at a rate of 10,000 tons of ore per day. Some five years later, a sizeable group of mineral claims west of Esperanza became available to Duval. Earlier exploration and development drilling in this area by others indicated an orebody of greater size but lower tenor than that of Esperanza. A drilling program conducted by Duval not only verified the results of the prior drilling but in addition, revealed a continuation of the mineralization to the south and east. Thus was developed the Sierrita orebody. Open pit design delineated 414 million tons of ore containing an average copper content of 0.35 percent and a molybdenum content of 0.036 percent. In April 1966, the office of Emergency Planning authorized General Services Administration to undertake a program under the Defense Production Act to en¬courage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national defense. Duval's Sierrita Project was brought to GSA's attention in May 1966 on November 28, 1967, an agreement providing for the development of the Sierrita Property was consummated with GSA. In March 1970, the first copper-molybdenum concentrates were produced in the 72,000 tons-per-day concentrator. Pre-production stripping exceeded the scheduled 105 million tons despite the comparatively short lead time available to equip the mine, build the mine plant facilities, and staff the technical, supervisory, and labor forces. Shortly before the first concentrates were produced, plans were being formulated for a program to increase processing capacity by approximately 15 percent, which entailed increasing overall mining capacity by approximately 50,000 tons per day. This program is scheduled for completion early in 1971.

Eastern Mesabi taconite is one of the hardest rocks known, but fortunately it shows little tendency to pack in the crushers, when the minus 5/16 inch material is removed. The crushing circuit is essentially as shown in the Engineering and Mining Journal article, "Reserve's New Taconite Project", dated December, 1956 except that the grizzly screen between the two stages of gyratory crushing has been eliminated. The Reserve operating staffs aim is to utilize the crushing equipment in such a manner that the maximum tonnage of taconite can be crushed to the required size at a minimum cost. As is readily apparent, the primary consideration is to produce a desired size product, with the other operating factors to be balanced, thus achieving the best setting for each crusher. Much effort has been expended toward the development of a satisfactory sized material for feeding the rod mills. The characteristics of this feed must allow the following situations to be handled by the existing equipment: 1. The material being fed to the rod mill must be such that it can be fed into the unit with the proper quantity of water to maintain the correct density within the mill. 2. The rod mill must produce a product from this feed which can be handled without difficulty by the magnetic cobbing and ball mill circuit. 3. The incidental tramp must not exceed that quantity which can be handled easily after the rod mill and after the ball mills.

The reduction of accidents will play an ever increasing role in the mining of coal and hardrock ores as mining operations become more mechanized, the equipment becomes more costly and sophisticated, and as mineral production exploits deeper and more marginal coal and ore deposits. The most effective means to reduce accidents is through the design of mining systems and equipment. Results of safety research by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to design safer coal extraction and haulage systems and to reduce electrical accidents are presented.

The Langmuir model has been widely used for the coal-methane sorption process through an isothermal test. However, even though the temperature-dependent Langmuir model was recognized theoretically and experimentally, the quantitative relationships between the Langmuir constants a and b and temperature have not been clarified and confirmed by laboratory test data. This paper collects 158 methane-coal sorption data under different temperatures that apply the Langmuir model to the relationships between the Langmuir constants a and b and temperature. Even though the Langmuir model cannot be used to show the physical state of methane adsorption on coal, it is widely used because of its simplicity and the reasonable explanation of its parameters a and b. The results from these published isothermal tests indicate that (1) there is no consistent relationship between Langmuir constant a and temperature, (2) the Langmuir model is a temperature-dependent model whose temperature-dependent feature is mainly shown by the relationship between the Langmuir constant b and temperature, and (3) the relationship between the Langmuir constant b and temperature can be described by both exponential and linear relationships with dried coal. This paper provides a database for the temperature-dependent Langmuir model that can be used for the reservoir simulation of coalbed methane reservoirs and for the coal seam degasification modeling of underground coal mines, considering the heating effects induced by geothermal and heat injection through factors such as hot water, hot steam and ultrasonics.

Respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) is one of the biggest occupational health hazards for underground coal miners. Dusty mining environments can cause long-term health problems, including pneumoconiosis and progressive massive fibrosis. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has recently revised regulations promoting enhanced dust mitigation technologies, which have sparked renewed interest in the development of dust mitigation technologies. The flooded bed dust scrubber (FBS) is one of the most widely used technologies; however, it is limited by technical challenges, the most notable being the potential to clog. Recent studies have shown that applying vibration to filter mesh can improve the overall efficiency of the scrubber and that the system can be readily integrated to existing continuous mining equipment using an energy harvesting approach. In this follow-up study, the impact of mesh design and surface modification on system efficiency was examined using different vibrating liquid-coated stainless-steel mesh panels in a laboratory-scale FBS. Based on the two-way interaction data from a multi-factor experimental design, the results show that the performance of the system can be optimized by using hydrophilic 20- or 30-layer filters and by excitation frequencies between 67 and 134 Hz. This laboratory study suggests that a 20-layer mesh screen with hydrophilic surface applications and optimized vibration parameters can perform similar to that of a 30-layer static mesh, which is typically used in industrial units.

Debate continues over whether barricading in refuge chambers is a good strategy to survive entrapment emergencies in underground coal mines, in particular fires and explosions. Unlike U.S. coal mines, Australian coal mines are not required to use refuge chambers and, instead, have adopted a strategy that focuses on instructing and training miners to self-escape to the surface. This paper analyzes the merits and problems of using refuge chambers or self-escape to the surface to manage emergencies in fires or explosions in an underground coal mine. We found that using refuge chambers may not be the best strategy during extensive fires or when multiple explosions occur. In these situations, mine rescuers are unlikely to be able to extract miners who are sheltered in chambers and, conversely, self-escape may save more lives than sheltering. Chances for successful self-escape are further improved by regular, externally assessed training such as the level 1 emergency exercises required in Queensland, Australia. These exercises put pressure on mine operators to ensure and maintain the effectiveness of their emergency management system.

It is believed that sulfur and volatile matter con-tents in coals are the main intrinsic properties to cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal's self-heating should be quantified. This study is aimed to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying the coal's propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model's ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture contents in the coal three important factors affecting the coal's self-heating process. Sulfur exists in coal primarily in the form of pyrite which will be oxidized rapidly under suitable conditions. Volatile matters, higher in low rank coals, are more easily to be oxidized. Heat of water condensation provides initial energy for low temperature oxidation. Heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built in the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature on pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are validated with the adiabatic testing data respectively.

"Increasing worldwide energy demands, coupled with desires for cleaner energy, have led to greater research of renewable energies. Strongly weather-dependent energy sources, e.g. solar and wind energy, are unable to provide a constant control energy to withstand the fluctuation of the extensive power systems during peak hours. The pump storage plant Nant de Drance in Switzerland will not only have the capacity of a nuclear power plant, producing 900 MW, but will also combine the environmental aspect and the demand for controlled energy. Nant de Drance is one of the pioneer projects for upcoming energy challenges and serves as a model for future pump storage plants. This paper focuses on the planning process and the project execution of interdisciplinary large-scale projects such as Nant de Drance, including project related data handling, communication systems and project handling skills. Furthermore, the paper discusses mining excavation in the context of large scale projects and their regional environmental challenges, e.g. high alpine rock mass on the site of Nant de Drance. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project Overview Nant de Drance is a 900 MW pump storage plant located in the Swiss Alps. To provide such a high energy storage, six turbines (reversible Francis type), each with a capacity of 150 MW, were installed. Due to the efficiency factor of 80% the pump storage plant is able to provide an energy production of 2500 GWh per annum. Construction of the pump storage plant, which has been selected as “Major Tunneling Project of the Year” in 2014 by NCE and ITA-AITES, will be completed over 10 years. Therefore, the project has been divided in six major phases outlined below: - Launch: 2008 - Access Gallery: 2010 – 2012 - Excavation KMA, KTR: 2011 – 2014 - Concreting KMA, KTR: 2014 – 2016 - Installation of HEM equipment: 2014 – 2018 - Tests & entry into service: 2017 – 2018 Figure 1 outlines the single process phases of the project. For the construction of the shafts, galleries and caverns, 1.7 million m³ of metamorphic rock with sedimentary origin (mica schist & paragneiss of the massif „Aiguilles Rouges“) were excavated. A tunnel network with a total length of 15 km was created. The machine cavern measures 194 m long, 32 m wide and 52 m tall."

As stated by the Congress in the preamble of the act establishing the Office of Coal Research, its purpose is, "To encourage and stimulate the production and conservation of coal in the United States through research and development by authorizing the Secretary of the Interior to contract for coal research, and for other: purposes." Thus, while the overall responsibility for air pollution control from all sources rests primarily with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, it is obvious that OCR could not perform its mandate of, increasing the utilization of our Nation's greatest energy resource if it ignored one of the greatest practical obstacles to achieving that objective. Therefore, air pollution abatement and prevention is one of the practical considerations taken into account in the selection of the OCR program. And as the severity of the air pollution problem imposes new restrictions on the use of coal, the importance of this criteria in the selection of OCR projects increases. The work done by OCR in air pollution abatement does not conflict with nor does it duplicate the program developed by HEW's National Center for Air Pollution Control. Technical members of the OCR staff maintain close formal and informal liaison with their counterparts in NCAPC. One formal agreement has been executed whereby the HEW agency has transferred funds to OCR for a practical study of the potential effectiveness of air pollution control when coal is burned in a fluidized bed comprised of inert alkaline earth material. The Davis detector cavern was excavated on the 4850 Level of the former Homestake Mine in the mid- 1960s to house a novel neutrino detector developed by Nobel Prize winner Dr. R. Davis. The original cavern was about 9.1 x 16.8 x 9.7 m high, excavated in a Precambrian amphibolite known as the Yates unit and enlarged in 2010. In 2009, the National Science Foundation selected the site for development as a national Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). This retrospective rock mechanics study of the Davis cavern is intended to inform design of the much larger caverns and laboratory rooms being considered for the same 4850 Level. Provision for rock mass variability, sequential excavation, jointing and wall damage from blasting are included in analyses that were done using two different computer codes and methods (FLAC3D and UTAH3). The results are in agreement with observations and show that cavern stability is indeed the case. The main conclusions are: (1) if conventional scaling of laboratory rock elastic moduli and strengths is done, then 0.25 and 0.50 scale factors are reasonable, (2) measured statistical and spatial variability in rock properties should be incorporated into geomechanical analyses to better reflect reality, (3) discontinuities (“joints”) are essential to reliable analysis of excavation safety and when properly taken into account eliminate the need for empirical “scaling” of laboratory rock properties, (4) major geologic features such as rhyolite dikes and breccia zones may be important to excavation safety at Homestake and should be explicitly represented in analyses and (5) quantifying wall blast damage is important to engineering design of underground excavations.

A site characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic design of underground structures is presented, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock failure process. It entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing the theory of extremes and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass properties can be estimated using empirical relationships currently available. This results of analyses can be incorporated into the design of underground structures, and then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

The Fort Cady in situ borate mining project involves recovery of boron from a mineral deposit located over 1400 feet below the surface. The resource recovery method is being developed using in situ mining technology employing weak acid solution injected directly into the ore body. As the acid contacts the calcium based ore (primarily natural colemanite), the contained borate values are digested as boric acid. This boric acid solution is then pumped to the surface by use of submersible pumps. At the surface the borate values are recovered as a finely divided solid white powder after a series of chemical reactions and precipitations resulting in the production of calcium borate. The refined product is then sold under the trade name CADYCAL 100.TM All environmental permits for up to a production rate of 90,000 tons per year have now been obtained. These permits required an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for federal lands and an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the private portion of the property. Regulatory permitting took over 5 years to obtain all authorizations for this operation. The ore body has an average thickness of 118 feet extending over 273 acres. At a production rate of 90,000 tons per year with only a 70 percent resource recovery allowance, in place reserves are sufficient to sustain production for over one hundred years.

Hydrogen (H2) gas released during battery charging can result in cross-interference for carbon monoxide (CO) sensors used for early fire detection and compromise the integrity of the mine atmospheric monitoring system (AMS). In this study, a series of laboratory-scale and full-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the responses of different CO sensors to H2 gas. In the laboratory-scale experiments, constant H2 concentrations in the airflow, from 100 to 500 ppm, pass through sensors. While in the full-scale experiments, increasing H2 concentrations generated as a byproduct from charging the batteries at the battery charging station rise to the sensors under different ventilation scenarios. The H2 concentrations at the CO sensor location were measured using H2 sensors and were correlated with the CO sensor response. The effects of ventilation and sensor location on the CO sensors responses were also analyzed. The results of this study can help mining companies to select appropriate CO sensors and improve the deployment of these sensors to ensure the safeguard of underground miners.

In Pennsylvania there are two distinct coal regions, bituminous and anthracite, in which the mining conditions and production trends are different. Bituminous mining is more mechanized, and production is increasing. This report is concerned specifically with the bituminous area. The bituminous coal industry apparently is facing a shortage of miners and mine officials which may become acute by 1970. Since 1949, when Pennsylvania had more than 100,000 bituminous coal miners, the number has steadily decreased. There are two principal reasons for the decrease of certified miners and mine officials. These reasons are the fact that apprentices are almost a thing of the past and the fact that the image of the coal miner is a poor one to people in general and to parents in particular. This has contributed greatly to the high average age of our miners today. The average age of all those employed in the mines is 50. Yet it is known that the progress in mine mechanization requires younger and more alert men to operate the newer type equipment.

With the increasing need to exercise better control over mill circuits has come a requirement to develop rapid, accurate means of measuring circuit parameters. One of the most important parameters is the assay of the material in the circuit (or about to be introduced to the circuit). To date, most on-stream analysis has been performed using X-ray fluorescence equipment. Neutron activation offers an alternative method in certain circumstances, and one which has several interesting advantages. Recognizing the need for a simple, safe neutron activation unit suitable for on-stream analysis in the mineral industries, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited has designed, built and tested the SHERLOCK system. One prototype (SHERLOCK I) is located in Ottawa and is now used primarily in research. A second prototype (SHERLOCK III) is located in Vancouver at the laboratories of B.C. Research. This unit is being used for some development research and for evaluating the unit in specific applications. Most of the work completed to date has been aimed at proving the technique and in developing some of the parameters needed to design systems for a milling plant. Funding for the work has been through research grants and through sponsor¬ship by interested companies.

INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center, has been conducting and documenting rock mechanics research in the Coeur d’Alene mining district for the past ten years (1, 2, 3, 4, 14, 15). A current project combines the information gathered from rock mechanics instrumentation, geologic structure, and analytic techniques to improve shaft and support design for the deep mines of the district (3). This project required knowledge of the anticipated loads and the physical properties of the rock mass to provide accurate input data for computer design models. Several techniques have been utilized to determine the physical parameters including the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) solid inclusion probe, the CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) biaxial and triaxial strain cells, and the CSM (Colorado School of Mines) dilatometer. This paper describes the determination of the in situ modulus of deformation in three mines over a period of three years and the evaluation of these results as they applied to this project. The need for in-situ rock mass properties such as the modulus of deformation has stimulated research and development of a large number of instrumentation techniques. One area of continuing interest involves various methods of radial borehole dilation. This concept was pursued by Menard (9) with an apparatus known as the pressure meter, which is used frequently in soil mechanics. Other developments in rock mechanics include the CPC (cylindrical pressure cell) by Panek (11) and the dilatometer by Rocha et.al. (13) in Portugal. The CSM dilatometer, which also utilizes this technique, was chosen for this project because it required a small amount of background study, was inexpensive, and could easily be combined with other experiments being planned for the test locations. Although no previous field applications to hard rock (compressive strengths greater than 20,000 psi) has been documented, the instrument was selected since good results have been achieved in granite, oil shale, and several coal measure rocks (11, 12).
