The beach and offshore gold resources demonstrated at Nome, Alaska are some of the richest found in Alaska. They contain potentially significant resources that may be exploited in the future. Several companies have contributed to the exploration and reserve estimation in Nome offshore gold deposits. More than 3,000 holes were drilled and over 10,000 offshore samples were analyzed in the Nome offshore areas of approximately 40 km2. Those 3,000 plus drill hole logs were converted into digital formats comparable with ArcGIS software. Considerable amounts of mineral resources data were processed and visualized using ArcGIS 8.3 and its geostatistic, 3D analysis, and spatial analysis components. In this study, based on the data processing and visualization results of ArcGIS, a user-friendly website for mineral resource management and utilization is developed using ArcIMS 4.0.1. ArcIMS is a GIS solution to build and deliver maps, data, and tools over the Internet. The Nome offshore mineral resources website presents the geostatistic and GIS analysis information. This site allows clients to access the information and perform ArcGIS analysis, such as interactive data query, and map layers display of the gold resource distribution, average grade, gold reserve, and relative mineral resource estimation via remote computers. With linkage to other related mining web sites, this web site allows users to search for related publications and more flexibly manage the information. A few other appropriate customized tools are also being developed to assist interactions between the server and clients for data analysis and management.

INTRODUCTION Under a Federal grant by the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) (80%), and sponsored by the State of New York (200), Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is constructing a 10.3 km (6.4 mile) light rail rapid transit system in Buffalo, New York. The $450 million project, which began construction in the Spring of 1979, is unique in rail transit alignment designs in the U.S.A. and the first predominantly underground light rail system in North America. The Buffalo project is unique in that the first phase of the expandable system follows the alignment of Main Street and is on the surface in a proposed 1.6 km (1.0 mile) pedestrian mall in the downtown business district. The alignment then progresses northward into a cut-and-cover portal and standard double-box configuration for 2.74 km (1.7 miles) at a depth of 9.1-10.7 m (30-35 ft) and subsequently drops into bedrock at depths of 18.3-27.4 m (60 to 90 ft). The 5.63 km (3.5 mile) rock tunnel section consists of two single tunnels 4.88 m (16.0 ft) nominal finished diam. and includes five stations. The rock tunnel line section was divided into a north and south contract of 2 316 m (7,600 ft) and 3 243 m (10,640 ft), respectively. "The Earth’s properties, composition and structure ahead of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) should be mapped for hazard assessment during excavation. We study the use of seismic-exploration techniques for this purpose. We focus on a seismic system for soft soils, where shear waves are better and easier to interpret than compressional waves, as has been shown over the last decade. The system is intended to be deployed on the machine’s cutter head, with a few seismic sources and sufficiently many seismic sensors to tackle spatial variability and noise characteristics. An important property of the newly developed system is its ability to process data with very little human interaction. Images need to be available in near real time, without human interactions slowing down the imaging process. This can be achieved by employing Full Waveform Inversion, which minimizes the difference between modeled and observed data. Because this method may suffer from local minima in the cost function if the data lack low-frequency information, we employ a dedicated seismic source that can generate sufficiently low frequencies for the relevant length scales. With data acquired in a number of field settings that mimic realistic TBM configurations, we show that the designed seismic system can successfully look ahead of the TBM and offers a valuable capability to support decision-making during tunnel excavation. INTRODUCTION While excavating a tunnel with a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), the geology and the ground conditions along the planned tunnel trajectory need to be investigated in order to safely and efficiently carry out the underground operations. This entails detecting the occurrence of boulders, foundations, pipes and faults, necessary to prevent hazards and time-consuming delays in the tunnel boring operations. In order to facilitate ground prediction ahead of a TBM, techniques as used in seismic exploration can be deployed. Two components common to seismic-exploration techniques are data acquisition and processing, the latter including inversion. We will discuss each of these for the application to tunnel excavation with TBM, in particular for soft soils."

There are several ways in which to classify refractories. The most suitable one is based on their general composition or raw material content. The categories are: 1. Aluminosilicate brick which include the fire clays and alumina and high alumina raw materials. 2. Basic brick which includes magnesia and chrome ore alone and in various combinations. 3. Silica brick which uses gannister or high purity gravels and sands. 4. Insulating brick are generally of the aluminosilicate type but may be most all refractory raw materials. 5. Special refractories are made from raw materials of zircon, zirconia, ultra high alumina, silicon carbide, fusion cast products, chromic oxide, carbon and graphite. The raw materials that make up these different categories are what we are briefly going to consider. Emphasis is placed more on the most important raw materials.

"INTRODUCTION Characterization of waste rock is frequently an oversight in mine planning which can contribute to significant delay in permitting and ultimately development. Thorough waste rock characterization is now a prerequisite to developing operating and closure plans acceptable to regulators and the public. BACKGROUND A long history of mine development has placed virtually all focus on the economic extraction and beneficiation of ore materials, while waste rock characterization and management received substantially less attention and consideration. Inadequate waste rock characterization has contributed to planning and management practices that are having unintended and unforeseen impacts to surface and groundwater, and in some cases lead to significant long term closure liability. In response, the regulatory community has developed guidelines for performing waste rock characterization during the pre- mine permitting process that in some cases seem onerous (BLM, 2013). Additionally, where a project proponent has not met these guidelines or results have been deemed “inadequate”, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and Bureau of Land Management (regulatory agencies) will only issue operating permits with rigid management practices to address the uncertainty, including requirements for lining waste rock facilities. WASTE ROCK CHARACTERIZATION FOR NEVADA PROJECTS Newmont Mining Corporation (Newmont) operations in Nevada approaches waste rock characterization like ore characterization, as it requires a similar investment of time, funding and attention to detail in order to pass public and regulatory scrutiny. Newmont follows a tiered approach to characterization that creates three over-lapping data sets representing an “escalation” in analysis at each tier, an approach that has thus far gained regulatory approval. “Tier 1” waste rock characterization for most Newmont projects begins with exploration drilling which follows internal standards and procedures. 20-foot composite samples are prepared from all drilling and analyzed for multiple trace elements using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) methods and for acid-base characterization using method ASTM-E1915. If the exploration program is successful and further resource or reserve development is recommended, the Tier 1 data are used to prepare a Waste Rock Characterization Plan (Plan) that will be presented to regulatory agencies as a part of baseline project characterization."

As part of a strategic research initiative at UBC to design and evaluate integrated underground mining and mineral processing systems, work has been done to determine how to utilize the coarse rejects of pre-concentration in the underground environment. An amenability study for nine orebodies from four of Xstrata Nickel?s Ontario operations evaluated both processing and waste disposal methods. The utilization of the rejects as a high quality backfill with minimal binder requirements has been identified as the preferred disposal method. Fill mixes utilizing the rejects in combination with classified tailings, full tailings, and cement were developed based on the geotechnical properties of the rejects. The mix designs were examined for both strength and rheological properties. The paper will present the results of the pre-concentration testwork, the design and strength testing of various mix designs for rejects from the nine ores and presents a conceptual design for an underground pre-concentration system based on this test work.

A series of difficult ground conditions causing high groundwater inflows and hazardous gas intrusion abruptly halted the construction of a 6.4-meter (21-foot) finished diameter and 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) long tunnel planned to serve as a 4-millioncubic meters (1-billion gallon) per day capacity river outfall for treated wastewater. Some 808-meters (2,650-feet) section of the constructed tunnel, TBM, and all other tunneling equipment were completely flooded with hydrogen sulfide laden artesian groundwater. The subsequent pumping and tunnel recovery efforts were unsuccessful and the tunnel was abandoned. In the end, the construction contract was terminated and options to redesign and reconstruct the project were re-evaluated to maximize the use of already constructed tunnel facilities such as the construction access and inter-mediate shafts and six outfall diffuser shafts in the river.

The Minerals Availability Program is a Bureau of Mines Program to systematically measure and classify identified worldwide nonfuel mineral resources according to their respective extraction technology, economics, and commercial availability. The program is designed to identify, collect, compile, and evaluate information on worldwide active mines as well as on developed and explored mineral deposits, and on mineral processing plants. Objectives are to classify domestic and foreign resources, to identify by cost evaluations resources that are reserves, and to prepare analyses of the availability of these resources for 34 commodities and secondary minerals. Availability analyses consider such factors as geographic location, the type of producible material, the technology and time required to produce a marketable product, and the productive capacity and unit cost for each deposit. These factors, reflected in the aggregated tabular and graphical data in the study for each commodity, are developed for consideration in the formulation of both domestic and foreign mineral policy. To date, the data have been collected for the 34 commodities and the availability analyses are in various stages of completion; expected first cycle completion date for all 34 is early 1986. Raw and aggregated data are available to the public in the form of computer-generated listings, tapes, and maps as well as in published reports. Also, systems developed to assist in performing the engineering and economic c analyses, including the computerized economic evaluation program (MINSIM) and the cost estimating system (CES), are available.

Barrick Gold Corporation installed an expert style control system on the grinding circuit at its Mercur mine. Barrick's main objective was to increase mill throughput by a minimum of 3%. The expert system team collected operating data and then created a knowledge base using Comdale/X expert system development software. The expert system moved from on-line "advisory" mode, testing of expert rules, to full process control in four weeks. Expert system control benefits include a 9-15% increase in mill throughput, consistent mill loading leading to less wear on SAG mill parts, and improved downstream process control.

Most of those involved in the mining industry are aware of the negative feelings that the well-informed citizens of this country, also known as the American public, have for the industry. As noted in an issue of Mining World News, “The general public perceives mining as dirty, noisy, destructive and belonging somewhere else.” The same theme was raised at a conference in Scotland in July 1991. It was noted there that mining has an unattractive public image around the world “as dirty, dangerous work that pollutes and degrades the environment.” Why is this? Why does mining have such a bad rap? I’m afraid that some of the blame rests with the mining industry itself - both in the past and in the present. Hopefully, we can do something about this in the future. And hopefully, the information here will help the reader to spread the word to offset the negative messages being issued almost daily by industry foes. I hope this will become more than just the words of another miner talking to miners and their friends. In the past, belching smokestacks and polluted streams and waterways were common sights. Today, the negative results of mining operations can also be seen in the form of waste dumps, leaked acid mine waste water and dust blowing from tailings piles. Some will argue that mining did nothing illegal in the past, and that all the regulations in force at that time were carried out to the letter. That may be so. The fact remains, however, that mining did these things, and the evidence is very clear in many parts of the country. It is visible to the well-informed citizens, in spite of the fact that many mine sites have been cleaned up and new technologies, such as flash smelting, dump leaching, pressure leaching and bioleaching, have greatly overcome many of the pollution problems. What is not so visible is the importance of the mining industry in our daily lives. Not long ago, knowledge about our non-renewable mineral resources ranked low on the list of qualifications for being a well-informed citizen. Events during the past two decades have changed this scenario. Politicians, writers, newscasters, economists and administrators, as well as the ‘public,’ are expressing opinions and forming judgments on oil company profits, desecration of landscapes, waste disposal sites and pollution by the extractive industries.

The Wharton No. 2 Mine of Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates is located about 60 miles south of Charleston, West Virginia in Boone County. Daily production is 6,000 T.P.D. on a two-shift basis. The Hernshaw Seam is mined by conventional equipment with one continuous miner in areas where conditions are suitable. The plant is on Cow Creek .Branch of Pond Fork, which in turn flows into the Little Coal River at Madison, West Virginia. When the mine was opened in 1948, plans were developed to build a dual Baum jig plant complete with mechanical and thermal drying, and because full production would not be reached for several years, it was decided to install only one Baum jig setup although the complete structure was erected. This phase of the plant was placed into operation early in 1949, The rated capacity was about 300 T.P.H. of 5" x 0 raw feed to the jig. Being a drift mine, the 10-ton mine cars are dumped at the Headhouse, crushed to 8" in a double roll crusher, conveyed 780 feet downhill to the picking .house where the +5" slate is removed by pickers. All coal is crushed to 5" and 5" x 0 is conveyed 150 feet to the cleaning plant. Further describing the plant growth, the second jig setup was installed in 1954 to clean the increased production. During this operating period, exhaustive tests had ,been run on the plant bleed which was an overflow from the large sludge tank located inside the plant, When the second jig addition was undertaken, 5-14' diameter and 12-8" diameter cyclones with a 9-disc filter were installed for the solids recovery and water clarification system, However, the circuit was not closed and a bleed of part of the overflows from the 8" diameter cyclones was still necessary, To comply with the State Water Commission regulations on stream pollution abatement, four pumps in series were installed to discharge the waste water behind the refuse pile.

A comprehensive, harmonic and sustainable development has always been a real concern of state policy makers. To reach such development, regional planning is an approach which is widely applied. This paper deals with policies adopted by a given country with rich mineral deposits, in order to accomplish a mining growth as well as economic development in relatively poor regions. In this regards, first, some worldwide experiences belonging to China, with large scale mining operations and Nigeria with a small scale mining industry, are studied. The mining industry in Iran is then considered as a case study. The study continues by categorizing and prioritizing Iranian regions based on their mining potential and the degree of development, using statistical analysis and Taxonomy and AHP techniques. Results obtained serve to provide recommendations as to where capital investments in the mining industry would produce highest returns. The approach used, together with the practical policies suggested in this paper, can be used to adapt appropriate strategies for mining development in a way that contributes to regional development and a more effective income distribution.

Aragonite "sand," an oolitic lime-stone, is distributed throughout the Bahamas on the Grand Bahama Bank, adjacent to Southeast Florida. Bahamian deposits hold 75-100 billion tons of recoverable Aragonite. Aragonite's precipitation from seawater over 700 years ago assures low contaminates, making it a pure material for such industries as cement, glass, etc. A 90-acre, man-made production island was built south of Bimini, adjacent to ocean shipping channels mining is by cutterhead, suction dredge, dewatering, and stockpiling for further drainage and shipping. Aragonite is transferred to the U. S. East and Gulf Coasts via bulk carriers to points of sale.

The importance of fluorspar to the United States and the world and the role it plays in industry and society extend far beyond that which is suggested by its measured production and consumption quantities and declared value. Compared to many other industrial minerals, the annual worldwide consumption of 5 million short tons valued at less than $500 million are not impressive figures. Fluorspar is made special primarily because of its status as a critical and strategic commodity; it is essential for the processing of most steels and all aluminum. It also is the raw material for the production of elemental fluorine, which plays a part in uranium refining.

The Bureau of Mines devised a column flotation technique using either fine or coarse bubbles and compared it with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a 44.7-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrate with 87-pct recovery, compared with 43.8- and 43.5-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrates with 85- and 77-pct recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse-and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5-pct-Cr203 with 95-pct recovery, exceeding conventional flotation which produced 35.6-pct-Cr203-grade concentrates with 87-pct recovery.

There is a growing interest among transportation planners to make more use of the subsurface to preserve the landscape and make transportation more efficient and economical. At the present time, utilization of the underground for transportation facilities is severely restrained by the adverse environmental impact and high construction costs. However, recent studies performed by the United States Department of Transportation indicate that, in spite of such problems, the volume of underground construction has significantly increased during recent years and projections point to continuation of these trends(1). It is estimated that the total volume of transportation tunnel construction will exceed $4 billion in this decade. This level of Investment justifies a significant research program. Due to the common interest in transportation tunnels and to the similarities of problems encountered during their construction, the tunneling research activities of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are closely coordinated with the programs other agencies of the U. S. Department of Transportation DOT); specifically, the Federal Railroad Administration (PRA) and the Urban mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). The FHWA is responsive to the particular needs of these agencies but will benefit from the research results obtained also. In 1971, the Office of Secretary, DOT, initiated plans for an overall coordination of the DOT, FICA, UMTA, and FHWA tunneling research activities. The objectives of this effort have been to reduce tunneling costs by 30% and to increase the rate of excavation by 200% within 10 years. The 1.8 million tonne Itos tailings deposit is the result of sever­al years of processing by Comibol of the San Jose and ltos Mine ores at Oruro Bolivia. The historic flowsheet consisted of a flotation circuit in which silver-bearing galena and stibnite were concentrated. Approximately half the silver in the ore was not recovered, and the existing tailings contain slightly over 200 grams silver per tonne, in the form of complex sulfides of silver, antimony, lead, and other metals coating grains of pyrite. An extensive laboratory program was conducted to exam­ine conventional processing l)lethods such as cyanide leaching and regrinding followed by flotation. However, the silver-bear­ing sulfides are in intimate contact with the pyrite and the pyrite comprises 30% of the total tailings weight. Cyanide leaching recovers only 40% of the silver and the cyanide consumption is uneconomically high. Flotation produces an upgraded, but still uneconomic, concentrate. For this reason, chloride leaching had been evaluated by Comibol, and in the mid 1980's Comibol undertook an innova­tive test consisting of two 300 tonne field heap leaches using a cold chloride solution. The tests were partially successful, but could not be applied to the bulk of the tailings which are already ground to 50% minus 200 mesh. In 1992, Kappes, Cassiday & Associates undertook to develop a hot agitated chloride leach flowsheet, and is current­ly constructing a treatment plant under a turnkey contract from a Bolivian company, Baremsa, S.A. Using this process, 85% of the remaining silver can be recovered, with significant by-prod­uct credits from antimony and lead. The project features hot, agitated acidic chloride leaching, filtration, crystallization of lead chloride, and precipitation of metals using iron scrap. Arsenic is removed from the precipitate by caustic leaching, and minor metals by furnace refining. Antimony is recovered as the oxide by cupelation, and silver is poured as <lore from the cupel. Production rate will be 600 tonnes per day. Startup is scheduled for late 1995.

The leaching behavior of gold in ammonical solutions with iodine as an oxidant was investigated using cyclic voltammogram and Tafel polarization. The majority of the experiments were carried out at 75°C, and the results were compared with consideraton given to the equilibrium of the iodine-ammonia system. The distribution of nine iodide-containing species at various pH values in the absence and presence of ammonia were considered at three different temperatures. It was found that, with the introduction of ammonia into the system, the concentration of iodide (I-), iodine (I2) and triiodide (I3-) is increased substantially, which in turn helps the rate of gold dissolution. The apparent activation energy was found to be about 46 kJ/mole, indicating a chemical-controlled mechanism.

Gravity concentration at the Pegasus Gold Montana Tunnels Mine was initiated in late June, 1991 with the commissioning of a coarse gold scalping circuit that processes a small portion of the ball mill circulating load. The primary objective for the circuit was to reduce the risk of gold particles advancing to flotation that are too coarse to float. The secondary objective was to enhance overall gold recovery and payable gold ounces in a cost effective manner. The gravity circuit has proven itself to be a major success. The above mentioned goals have been achieved, and they have been maintained at record throughput rates that are 30% higher than when the circuit was commissioned. A number of modifications and improvements were made over the last three years which allowed the gravity circuit to keep pace with the higher tonnage, these are discussed in detail in the body of this paper. The overall approach to gravity concentration at Montana Tunnels has always been to optimize production rather than maximize the gold ounces produced. This philosophy has now yielded a circuit expansion and relocation project which will allow for an estimated 50% increase in gravity gold production, while reducing the overall unit costs of production significantly. This paper will review historical gravity circuit performance, improvements, and the current relocation and expansion project.
