Introduction A staccato beat rings out across the Australian bush. The stamps are at work, slowly pulverizing gold-bearing ore for a patient, grizzled prospector. This is the State Battery near Marvel Loch, a tiny 22.6-t/d (25-stpd) capacity gold plant operated by the Western Australia government. It is one of many such plants located in remote corners of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. They are miniature custom mills operated for the benefit of prospectors and small mine operators. These state batteries are so called because they are operated by state governments and because the principal item of machinery in the plants are stamp batteries. They are fascinating anachronisms - throwbacks to times past, a century ago, to the hard and heady existence of gold rush days. Marvel Loch plant Typical of these operations, and perhaps a trifle more sophisticated than most, is the plant near Marvel Loch, a small center for mining and farming about 400 km (250 miles) due east of Perth. Marvel Loch. The name evokes visions of a pristine lake set in a cool, green, misty glen of the Scottish highlands. Actually, it is probably a hot, dry salt pan somewhere nearby. Just where the "loch" is difficult to discern. There is no sign of it on the map.

Tracer gases are an effective method for assessment of mine ventilation systems, but their dispersion characteristics can differ substantially as ventilation parameters, such as flow path and velocity, vary. This research utilizes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to model a simplified full scale model mine, details a sensitivity study examining mesh size for an underground coal mine simulation, and examines gas dispersion parameters to determine the optimal model methods for simulation of tracer gases in underground coal mines. These models can be used to determine how a given tracer gas profile might be generated in a mine or areas of a mine that are not accessible, for example, immediately following a mine disaster. Accurate simulation scenarios can allow for the remote determination of the status of the ventilation network, but the sensitivity of the simulation at mine scale must be carefully examined.

Environmental regulations have become a decisive factor for many minerals industry operations. Managers face new liabilities as a result of environmental laws, and restrictive permitting requirements for new projects make mine development an increasingly difficult proposition. An abundance of federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations already confront on-going minerals operations, and complex new legislation and rule-making is always in progress. Acronyms and initials like RCRA, CERCLA, SARA and EIS become as familiar as reserves, tons, grades and recoveries. The growth of such regulation has created a new category of professional employees - environmental scientists and engineers-whose presence will influence minerals production activity from now on. The disciplines of environmental science and engineering are still being defined. While these definitions are being worked out, companies in the minerals industry have responded by hiring people with professional experience in existing disciplines and training them to their special needs. An environmental consulting industry of substantial proportions has developed to offer expertise where producing companies may not find it economic to hire full-time professionals. The mining schools have responded by introducing environmental course work, but these programs have yet to supply a significant number of environmental professionals to the minerals industry. To gain some perspective on where minerals producers now stand in their hiring of environmental professionals, ME recently surveyed 20 companies, with questions about how they go about the business of managing environmental compliance. Soon New York City will have a new train station. A tunnel project is under construction to extend Line 7 to a new station that is located near the Jacob K. Javits Con-vention Center. This is also part of the Hudson Yards redevelopment project that is intended to aid redevelop-ment of the west side of Midtown Manhattan around the Long Island Railroad?s Caemmerer Railyard. The station, or ?cavern? as it?s called by those excavating it, will be the portal for that growth. In the city, public transportation means high-rise residential proper-ties will have better access to the business district, and those outside the area will have greater access to event facilities ? two factors that are critical for development investment.

My "outside exploration" began in November 1908, only 16 months after I had come to Bisbee as a raw engineer. The well publicized reputations of eminent engineers up to that time, including John Hayes Hammond, Herbert Hoover, James Douglas, D.C. Jack- ling, J. Park Channing, and a few others had been due to new mines they had found or brought to successful operation. And here was I, a mere youngster, given a chance to join the group. I knew there would be disappointments but I had no idea how many of them. In spite of the many prospects that turned out to be worthless I never looked at a new one without the feeling that this one might turn out to be the big success. This confidence, blind as it was, gave every arduous examination a zest and it made me climb every mountain on which the owner said there was something worth seeing, or on which T could see a distant staining that might mean ore. If I looked at every showing the owner suggested he at least would think I was honest and would bring other properties to our attention. This reputation of never refusing to go to see an outcrop, no matter how hot the desert sun or how rough the terrain, was probably one of my best assets. High as my hopes were at the start, they proved not to be exaggerated and if I were given a chance to do it again I would not hesitate, in spite of the jaundice, rheumatic fever, and other maladies that beset some of the expeditions. On the whole the results have equaled all my hopes. Toward the end of my years of active exploration I totaled up the score. Out of the prospects submitted to us about two out of three were eliminated after questioning the owner or prospector, without an examination. This left about a 1000 mines or prospects that seemed worth at least a preliminary look. One out of seven of these was worth a little development and a seventh of this seventh turned out to be a modest success or better. And nine or ten in all, or one out of 1000

The Greek Cement Industry is a vital sector of our economy. With an annual production of cement over 15.5 million tonnes, it contributes significantly to the national gross domestic product (G.D.P.). The cement industry, as other mineralogical transformation process industries (lime, glass, ceramics, extractive metallurgy etc.), is high energy intensive. Each tonne of cement produced requires not only large amounts of fuels (coal, fuel oil), but additionally a significant quantity of electrical power as well. All fuels consumed by the Greek Cement Industry are imported and energy accounts for one third of the cement production cost. Therefore, it is of interest of the community and the industry to increase energy efficiency, to reduce the quantities of fuels consumed in the cement manufacturing process. It is also known that like almost all manufacturing processes, the cement industry produces large amounts of CO2 (combustion of fuels, de-carbonization of limestone and use to electricity). The utilization of wastes (principally as alternative fuels, scrap tires, spent solvents etc.) is compatible with the general principles of waste management and it is also a common practice in other European and developed countries. In the present paper the economic, social and environmental benefits provided by the recycle process of the various wastes in the Greek cement plants are extensively analyzed. From the whole work, it was concluded that such a practice: - replaces a significant percentage of imported fossil fuels in the cement manufacturing process, - maximizes the recovery of energy and also ensures their safe disposal, - produces overall environmental benefits by reducing releases to air, water and land, - prevents resource depletion of valuable non-renewable fossil fuels, - overcomes the need for the construction of dedicated incineration facilities, - contributes positively to the principles of the sustainable development.

Over the past several decades, cement-based grouts using ultrafine cement as are placement for portland cement have begun to gain acceptance as an alternative to chemical solution grouts, however the amount of information currently available on these grouts is limited. For this reason, the authors developed a field testing program to evaluate the penetration capabilities of various ultrafine cement grout mixes. The tests were conducted by injecting sand columns using different portland and ultrafine based grouts, the measuring penetration distances after applying equal injection pressure for the same time period. Results of tests performed in 1999 and 2000 are discussed herein.

The cost of performing equipment maintenance is an increasingly significant component in the total operating cost of today's capital-intensive, large-scale mining operations. Because of the interdependence o f equipment maintenance on other functional areas of the minesite, an integrated approach to the monitoring and control of maintenance costs is essential. An important element of the introduction of computer-based systems in a mine is the acceptance of the systems by the users. The development history and major features of a minesite-developed system, which emphasises the user's importance, is described. The system outlined is designed to provide information for decision-making to the place where the company's maintenance money is actually spent - on the shop floor.

Anyone with geothermal experience can readily attest that geothermal operations are a natural extension of oil and gas operations. A geothermal company and an oil company need the same type of people to do the same kind of work. In the geothermal industry, geologists and geophysicists define prospects through surface geology, analysis of surface seeps, magnetics, gravity, and resistivity surveys - techniques similar to those used in the petroleum industry. In addition, shallow (250-ft) temperature gradient holes often are used in geothermal operations. Landmen take geothermal leases that are patterned after oil and gas leases. Exploratory drilling is done with the same drilling contractors and same drilling rigs, with minor modification. Drilling foremen and drilling engineers share the same objective of making the most hole, in the shortest time, at the least cost, with a proper completion. Petroleum engineers test the wells, design the completions, determine the reserves, make economic calculations, work with the tax assessor, and manage the reservoirs. Production engineers build roads, locations and pipelines, install gas/liquid separators and meters, and operate production and injection facilities. A contract to sell steam to a public utility is required. Various governmental regulations, permits, environmental concerns, and public affairs pose similar problems in both industries. Also required of both are top management people who are acquainted with geologic risk, prepared to accept million dollar dry holes, willing to bid competitively at lease sales, and able to invest large sums based on a technology not yet fully proven. Successful geothermal development requires in-depth financial ability similar to that required for petroleum development. The Atlantic City iron mine is located in Fremont County in central Wyoming, near the historic gold mining camps of Atlantic City and South Pass City. The mine lies on the southeast flank of the Wind River Mountains at an elevation of about 2,470 m (8,100 ft) above sea level (Fig. 1). An 81-h M2 (200-acre) tailings impoundment at the Atlantic City taconite operation has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming&apos;s Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction incorporated commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300-mm- (12-in.-) thick cap of a sterile clay loam cover material. The water level was lowered in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin. A wide tailings pond spillway was built that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water-level fluctuations in the pond. Rock berms and rock snow fences were built for wind-erosion control and soil-moisture preservation. Future work includes tree planting in the protective wind/ snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences and plugging a decant pipe. US Steel opened the Atlantic City iron mine in August 1962. It closed in 1983. Taconite iron ore was mined by surface methods. The ore was magnetically separated from the waste. The magnetic concentrate was mixed with bentonite, formed into pellets and roasted to produce a blast furnace feed stock for US Steel&apos;s blast furnaces in Geneva, UT. The pellets were hauled by rail to the Geneva Iron Works. The Atlantic City Mine produced three types of wastes. These included waste rock overburden from mining, a coarse-grained (sand to small-gravel sized), nonmagnetic reject rock termed "cobbs" and fine-grained tailings ranging from 600 to 75 µm (28 to <200 mesh). The requirement for large diesel equipment to be certified for operation in potential gassy mine conditions in western oil shale mines motivated a design engineering project to develop a dry exhaust conditioner system to replace traditional wet scrubber technology. A dry exhaust conditioner for a 600 hp diesel engine was designed and fabricated for retrofitting into a 600 hp underground haul truck. The engine conditioner package was taken through a simulated certification process at the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Approval and Certification Center to refine test procedures and to uncover any flaws in the dry exhaust conditioner technology. The engine/exhaust system was then installed in an underground haul truck to demonstrate mine-worthiness of the system. No inherent features were discovered that would prevent the system from meeting test requirements. However, the tests did point out several deficiencies in the prototype design.

Heap leaching efficiency is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (channeling and ponding), which result from fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can immobilize fines, but copper leaching requires an acid-resistant binder to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory way to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it “feels right”. We have developed procedures to quantitatively determine whether a binder gives good performance in an acidic solution, and have identified several binders that will be suitable for copper heap leaching.

Introduction Coal has been mined in the western United States since the mid-1800s. The resource is abundant in the West. Despite recent economic conditions, it remains an important part of the nation&apos;s energy warehouse. Many of the seams that comprise the western resource base are thick, some exceeding 61 m (200 ft). Multiple, closely-spaced seams or thick coals that split into two or more minable seams are also common. Historically, subsurface development recovered from less than 15% to 50% of these deposits (Matson and White, 1975). This resulted in a substantial loss of inplace reserve due to the limited height that could be mined using the available technology. In an effort to increase future recovery from such deposits, the US Bureau of Mines analyzed the potential for incorporating three thick-seam mining methods into western coal mines. These methods are high-face longwall, multislice longwall, and longwall caving. They were developed in Europe and are being used to mine thick coal seams in Europe and Asia. One aspect that will determine their success in the US is the geology of the individual deposit; namely, are the methods adaptable to the geologic conditions characteristic of western coal? This paper analyzes some of the geologic factors that would affect development of thick or closely-spaced seams using these mining methods. Occurrence of thick and closely-spaced seams Since mining conditions and methods differ around the world, a thick seam is often defined as a seam whose total thickness cannot be extracted using the available equipment. In the western US, the maximum extractable mining height is about 4.3 m (14 ft). For this research, a thick seam was defined as a minable seam 4.6 m (15 ft) thick or more. Since one of the seams is usually lost using standard mining methods, closely-spaced or split seams were also addressed. These were defined as two minable seams 1.5 m (5 ft) thick or more separated by 9 m (30 ft) of interburden. Thick or closely-spaced coal seams are common in the West. Their importance has not been documented due, in part, to the methods used to measure resources. In the past, all reserves greater than 1.1 m (42 in.) thick for bituminous seams and greater than 3 m (10 ft) thick for subbituminous seams were grouped together and were differentiated only by rank. Further differentiation by seam thickness or minability was not done. For this reason, reserve figures for thick or split seams are difficult to determine. By analyzing available published resource data, Ferm and Muthig (1982) addressed thick seam resources. They estimated a resource of 90 Gt (99 billion st) of coal (16% of the Western resource base) in seams 4.6 (15 ft) or greater at less than 610 m (2000 ft) overburden. Yet, a later study of Pierce and others (1982) on one thick seam deposit in the Powder River Basin estimated a resource of 103 Gt (113 billion st). Pierce (1986) reported that the overburden reached a maximum of 731 m (2400 ft). The resources in this single deposit exceeded the 90 Gt (99 billion st) total projected for the entire western US by 12.7 Gt (14 billion st). Due to such differences, this author chose to look at reported occurrences of thick or closely-spaced minable seams in place of resource figures, to verify the need to research thick seam mining in the West. An occurrence was defined as an isolated site where a thick seam or two or more closely-spaced seams were reported. The occurrences were derived from published material - mostly mine descriptions, measured sections, coal exploration logs, and oil and gas logs. Due to time constraints, the reserves associated with each occurrence were not determined. All data points were random. The analysis was limited to occurrences in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. At the 1971 Annual Meeting we presented a paper on the results s obtained by wet magnetic separation on very fine, slightly magnetic material . Considerable interest was shown in a corollary subject, namely; on the type of magnetic con¬struction of the Magnetic Engineering Associates (MEA) high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS). it is the purpose of this paper to describe the principles of this separator and to give answers to many of the questions directed at us both in session and privately since the March 1971 meeting of the AIME. It is well-known that passage of a direct electric current through a wire shaped in the form of a loop results in a magnetic field being created in the volume enclosed within the loop. The magnetic field is proportional to the amperes of electric current passing through the wire. If the wire is in the form of a solenoid consisting of 11 turns, the magnetic field is n times larger. Hence the expression ampere-turns commonly associated with magnetic separators. If a particle, free to rotate and of higher magnetic susceptibility than the medium, is placed in a magnetic field, it will orient itself within that field, and it will move within the field in such a way as to go into a more intense part of the field. The traction on the particle is proportional to its inherent magnetic property which depends on its magnetic susceptibility and its volume, to the mag¬nitude of the field at the spot where the particle is situated, and to the magnitude of the field gradient at that spot. Of the three factors that control traction on a particle in a magnetic field, the magnet designer can effectively control two, the magnetic field and the field gradient. In a wet magnetic separator such as the HIMS magnetic separator, there is another force exerting traction on the particle, and that is the force of the fluid (liquid) on the particle. It is, therefore, essential to examine the relationship of the fluid to the magnetic field. First, assume the water in which magnetic and non-magnetic particles are suspended to be stagnant. In the absence of magnetic field, the only forces acting on the particles are those due to gravitation on the particles and on the fluid displaced. This is the subject, so important in gravity concentration, discussed in elementary texts of mineral engineering&apos;.

Geologic constraints on mining and recoverability include the following: coal seams too thin or thick for conventional mining methods; coal seams with insufficient stratigraphic separation; unstable roof or floor strata; discontinuous or lenticular seams; coal seams that have high dips or are intensely faulted; water problems due to proximity of aquifers; and coal quality problems such as excessive sulfur, ash, chlorine, sodium, etc. The demonstrated reserve base for western coal of 220 billion tons is considered misleading as it does not adequately incorporate the above parameters in estimating procedures. Current reserve base estimating procedures involve an abstraction of data from generalized resource estimates. The authors believe the reserve base should be determined independently beginning with well-known deposits, with all mining and recoverability constraints fully incorporated.

INTRODUCTION The need for substantial advances in underground excavation technology has produced considerable research activity on a wide variety of concepts under a variety of Government funded programs. One goal of this "Rapid Excavation" effort has been the development of a means to apply the well-known virtues, both technical and economic, of the drill and blast method in a continuous process. The spiral blast concept, aimed at this specific goal, has been funded for initial studies (1) by the ARPA Rapid Excavation Program and, for the experimental work reported herein, by the Department of Transportation (2). The economy enjoyed by the drill and blast method stems from two factors: explosive energy is relatively cheap; and this energy is released so as to cause rock fragmentation largely through tensile failures. The relative ease and efficiency of tensile rock failures have long been recognized. The drill and blast process of course cannot be truly continuous since drilling and blasting (and other necessary functions) simply are separate, distinct operations. Although some surface explosive work has been done to avoid the need for drilled blast holes (3) it does appear that the high performance associated with explosive excavation requires placement of the explosive beneath the rock surface. This paper describes studies of blasting pattern which, in simplest terms, replaces the occasional heavy blast of conventional practice with frequent, much smaller blasts. The intersections of numerous joint sets at the surface of tunneling region of Abu-Tartour-Project in Egypt create blocks with irregular shape and size in the rock mass. Most of these blocks are not able to move into the free space of the tunnel. Few key blocks are in a position to move and as soon as they begin so, some restrained blocks will be liberated. The aim of this work is to find the (removable) key blocks for walls, floor, roof and corners of a portion of the tunnel under jointed surface rocks; and then determine the best tunnel direction.

This paper discusses the development of a SLAM II* simulation model with imbedded optimization modules designed M evaluate mineral exploration and exploitation strategies. The model traces through a sequential exploration program, evaluating each deposit site based upon geologic information and potential profitability of the site. At a specified time during the simulation, a new production plan is developed for currently producing deposits which takes into account the planning horizon and deposits which are currently being explored. Potential uses of the model by geologists, engineers, and management decision makers include setting corporate objectives and policies on exploration and production. The model is also useful for testing past decisions to evaluate decision making criteria and evaluating mineral deposit profit potential.

One concern of the Mine Safety and Health Administration is the structural integrity of steel wire ropes used on mine personnel hoists and elevators. Failure of such ropes has resulted in loss of life and property. Although thorough and regular visual examinations are performed, hoist ropes may still fail from undetected internal wear, corrosion, and broken wires. To complement visual examinations, nondestructive rope inspection techniques have been developed to determine deterioration and removal criteria. The techniques use electromagnetic and permanent-magnet test instruments designed by a Canadian firm. This paper describes the operating principles, field and laboratory testing of these nondestructive testing instruments, and discusses the feasibility of using this type of testing as a supplement to visual examination and destructive tests.

Earlier studies on the hydrodynamic interactions between fine particles and air bubbles have shown that fine particle flotation can be improved by using small air bubbles. In the present work, microbubbles ranging in size from 70 to 250 microns have been used in a flotation column for the processing of fine coal. The performance of the microbubble column has been studied as a function of wash water addition rate, aeration rate, feed rate and column length to diameter (L/D) ratio. The information collected from these tests has been used to analyze column behavior and to develop scale-up criteria. The results of this investigation suggest that mixing within the column may not be as significant as bubble size and residence time in determining column performance. Improved recovery can be obtained by decreasing bubble size which increases the flotation rate constant, and also by increasing L/D which increases residence time for a fixed column volume. The increase in residence time with L/D is due to a decrease in the volumetric flow rate of wash water with column diameter.
