Results for the first underground test of the ventilated drum in a U.S. coal mine are presented. Tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines through a contract research program with Foster-Miller, Inc., to evaluate dust control effectiveness in a western mine and for gas control in a full scale laboratory facility. The ventilated drum is designed to reduce the amount of dust from cutting by drawing dust-laden air from the cutting zone through twelve water- powered "dust capture" tubes built into the shell of the shearer drum. High pressure water up to 1 12.48 kg per cm2 (1,600 psig), released from sprays, induces maximum airflow of 1.89 m3/sec (4,000 cfm) from the face side of the drum and provides cleaning for respirable dust and improved methane dispersion. At the gob side of the drum a deflector plate, attached to the cowl arm, turns the water spray and a proportion of the cleaned air back into the cutting zone. More than 50 ventilated drums have been installed to date in England, and their tests carried out on fixed height and single-ended ranging drum shearers have shown reductions in respirable dust of 60-80 pct, as compared with conventional wet cutting. The U.S. test on a double drum shearer showed slightly lower reduction.

The Price Road Drain Tunnel in Tempe, Arizona is part of the drainage system constructed in conjunction with the Outer Loop Highway in metropolitan Phoenix. The Outer Loop Project is a part of a much larger expressway system that includes other large drainage tunnels such as the Papago Freeway Drain Tunnels. Large diameter downhole inspection borings were utilized to obtain subsurface data for the design of these tunnels. Subsurface data obtained from the large diameter borings resulted in the development of empirical parameters that were successfully incorporated into the Geotechnical Design Summary Report and which satisfactorily predicted ground behavior, formed the basis for improved geotechnical design criteria, and facilitated the cost effective assessment of third party risk. The purpose of this paper is to describe the subsurface exploration program performed for this project and to explain the methods used to evaluate underground construction procedures.

GENCOR was contracted by Lonrho Plc of London to design a treatment plant for the benificiation of ores from the Amantaytau Goldfields in Uzbekistan (CIS). The testwork required for determining the design parameters was conducted at GENCOR Process Research in Randburg South Africa, on large bulk samples of ore shipped from the CIS. The initial milling and flotation testwork was designed to both optimise the conditions for maximum gold recovery, and to provide flotation concentrate for subsequent testwork. The concentrate produced was fed to a pilot scale BIOX® plant, and at the client's request a portion was shipped to specialists in roasting and pressure oxidation technology for comparison. Besides the testwork conducted at the GENCOR Process Research Laboratories in South Africa, the client also requested that the testwork be repeated at the Ingichki Research centre in Uzbekistan to demonstrate to their CIS joint venture partners that the results obtained in South Africa are reproducible and to demonstrate the ease of operation of a BIOX® plant. Pilot scale equipment was air freighted to Ingichki where the results of the testwork obtained in South Africa were successfully duplicated. BIOX® technology was shown to achieve higher gold recoveries than either roasting, whole ore roasting or pressure oxidation.

"INTRODUCTION Contemporary city is made of layers. Physical structures layers (built fabric, residential, commercial industrial etc. ), infrastructural layers (below and above ground), “green” layers (parks and open spaces), and also informational layers, i.e. connections, links, between sectors of the city and other territories. The “city of layers” concept represents the exercise of “rebuilding the city” per each layer, highlighting those physical built structures that are functional to define a relation. For example, if consider the “connection” relation, the city is re-designed by considering only transportation built structures. The layer obtained in such fashion is hence the “transportation” layer, including below grade infrastructures (subways) and above grade lines (rail, bus, tramways etc.), as below shown in Figure 1.In this sense, the contemporary city is represented by separate constructs assembled together according to a specific functionality (e.g. “connection”). As a consequence, the relation between what is built underground, and the related above-ground development, can be perceived in his most evident appearance. What could happen within the contemporary city if the planning process would begin from below to above and not vice-versa?INTERACTION The question risen in the introduction is strategic when approaching the difficult task of designing (or re-designing) a multi-level organism like the contemporary city. Nowadays, the theme of integration between underground and at-grade master planning has become the subject of many urban renovation projects, where the design process has begun within the transportation layer, underground, and further developed by interacting with at-grade structures already existing or in phase of design.A series of case studies where below/above interaction plays a key role in the project will be further analyzed. Moreover, it is relevant to understand the mechanics of an urban transformation process that originates within the transportation layer and ends up with the design of entire sectors of the city. The Transit Oriented Development approach is a useful tool to clearly understand such transformation process. TOD has become, in particular in the last decade, one of the most effective tools for urban design, in order to solve simultaneously the many different instances related to transit planning, urban design and real estate market."

Although fraught with problems of completeness and comparability, statistical measures of mineral exploration in the United States point downward for 1985 and 1986. Exploration expenditures in the US domestic and Canadian companies have dropped steadily from a 1981 peak of about $400 million to about $190 million in 1985, according to a recent survey of exploration statistics by the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG). These totals have been adjusted to account for differences in the estimated coverage of exploration activity by each year's SEG survey. This survey is now supported by the US Bureau of Mines and the US Geological Survey (USGS). The drop in current dollar amounts does not take into account the effects of inflation, which would make the decline even more substantial. Metals Economics Group of Boulder, CO reported in its Mine Development Bimonthly that announced exploration budgets for 1986 indicated an even larger drop for the past year. Worldwide expenditures for companies covered by the report dropped from about $800 million to $750 million from 1984 to 1985 and plummeted to about $600 million in 1986. Exploration activity has been declining since about 1981. This has been due in large part to low prices for base and ferrous metals. Exploration budgets of mining subsidiaries of oil companies have plunged as parent companies try to conserve cash in the face of the sharpest decline in oil prices in nearly 40 years. Mining subsidiaries of petroleum firms that were either liquidated or divested recently include Anaconda (Arco), Getty Mining (Texaco), and Cyprus Minerals (Amoco). Exploration expenditures in Canada increased in 1984 in regions where gold is a traditional target. But there was little change in 1985, based on preliminary statistics from a federal government report (Energy, Mines and Resources Mineral Bulletin MR 211, 1986). Claim staking in Canada dropped 23% from 1983 to 1984 and declined slightly in 1985. Diamond drilling increased in 1984 to the record levels of 1980 and 1981. The ratio of exploration to development expenditures in Canada, however, fell from a 1981 peak of 0.9 to about 0.5 in 1984. The report also indicated that, since 1981, there has been a massive write-off of reserves with high production costs. Reserve levels of all major metals were down since 1981. Precious metals exploration accounts for an increasing share of total mineral exploration. For example, the SEG data show that 90% of 1985 US exploration expenses by domestic mining companies were devoted to base and precious metals, compared with only 51% in 1980. The restructuring of the mining industry has been accompanied by a decrease in response to the last two SEG annual surveys, but the trend towards precious metals was already established in earlier years. Trade journal reports suggest that the reduction of long-term interest rates has encouraged the mining industry to make cost-reducing capital investments in existing mines to maintain competitiveness. This is consistent with the observations that metals explorations in 1986 was characterized not by announcements of "grassroots" discoveries, but by on-property exploration on identified mines or prospects. In an effort to cut costs, gold mining companies have been following up on low cost production opportunities in their prospect inventories. Short-term, low risk, heap leach operations that can produce rapid returns on investment have been pursued. Safety is the No. 1 concern of any drill contractor or mine operator. Everyone in the industry knows a safe site helps stabilize operational costs and enables higher productivity. When it comes to exploration drilling, research has proven a majority of injuries are caused by the mishandling of coring rods. A driller helper will typically handle up to 50 rods per shift or up to 15,000 rods per year. With an annual 340 t (750,000 lb) in rods managed by hand, the risk of serious injury is extremely high. DuPont’s Florida Plant has been mining in northeast Florida and supplying titanium-bearing minerals, zircon and staurolite for over 50years.The site has successfully implemented and “sustained” a land reclamation/habitat enhancement program that goes beyond regulatory requirements and standard industry practices. However, the term sustainability has been used by so many organizations, many with divergent viewpoints, that it is important for a mine to develop its over-all concept and approach to sustainable operation. As a foundation, the outstanding reclamation efforts at DuPont’s mine will be presented followed by a broader look at the overall sustainability strategies and tactics used at the site.

A methodology is presented for finding feasible or locally optimal designs in the class of homogeneous, countercurrent, processing networks performing two-component non-sharp separations. The advantage of the methodology developed here is that given a set of independent performance criteria (specifications such as network separation factor, beneficiation ratio or recovery), a feasible or locally optimal countercurrent network design meeting those criteria can be found in one step. In the methodology, graph-theory was used to explicitly obtain the exact network responses of specific countercurrent networks. These responses were used to formulate the linear recursion equations whose solution gives the expressions for the countercurrent network responses which are a function of the stage transfer functions for two-component, non-sharp separations. These expressions are also functions of the network variables n and c. These expressions, together with the set of independent design criteria, were solved simultaneously for n and c using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained, non-linear equations. The network variables n and c embody the coded network design information which is used to find the feasible network design which satisfies the set of independent performance criteria.

The four most important parameters controlling the flow of as in coal are the gas content, permeability, diffusion coefficient and clear characteristics. Estimates of these and, more importantly, a good knowledge about the variations in their values over time are important for proper simulation of long-term gas production. This paper describes experimental techniques for the estimation of diffusion-coefficient and permeability values, along with their time dependency under simulated in situ conditions. It is shown that the permeability and diffusion-coefficient values are not constant, as they are usually assumed to be. There is a significant variation in their values, probably as a result of changes in the microstructures of coal associated with release and flow of gas. Finally, a technique to estimate clear parameter is presented.

Stratabound Proterozoic precious metal mineralization in central Arizona is associated with felsic and adnesitic to mafic volcanic rocks and sediments derived from these rocks. Hydrothermal fluids associated with felsic volcanism form gold mineralization within hotspring vent complexes or within asymetric basins, which flank the vent complexes and are filled with tuffaceous sediments. Massive to semi-massive sulfide copper-zinc systems associated with felsic volcanism may locally contain small gold occurances either laterally or vertically zoned from the ore. In andesitio to mafic rocks, zinc-lead-gold-silver-copper bearing mineralization and gold mineralization are both associated with feruginous sulfide bearing cherts. The partitioning of gold into these specific geologic environments may be related to variations in temperature and composition of the hydrothermal fluid and the depth of the seawater-sediment interface below sea level during the mineralization event.

The paper proposes three methods to determine optimum lifetime of a mining project1. The conclusion is that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate (by coincidence). It is also stated that: "The stochastic and option pricing models, in addition to providing a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV (net present value) calculation, showed that the example project has the potential for substantially higher return. By explicitly considering a project's potential risks, the stochastic or option pricing techniques can more accurately describe its probable investment performance." This discussion is intended to demonstrate that: • It is no coincidence that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate. • The stochastic and option pricing models do not provide a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV calculation. • The potential for a substantially higher return is misrepresented. First, a review of investment decision theory in mining is needed. Net present value is the preferred performance measure because of the flexibility offered when comparing various alternatives. However, it presents the following disadvantages: • The discount rate selection is not straightforward. • The NPV obtained represents a deterministic characterization of the variables included in the cash flow calculations, i.e. a single-point estimate.

Many Americans have seen Greenland while flying over it on their way to or from Europe. Few have visited this largest island in the world. Portions of the 20 percent of the territory that are not ice-covered are highly mineralized. Greenland could become very productive if the present interest in exploration increases. The people and Greenland’s history The population of Greenland is 57,000. Twenty percent are Europeans, mainly of Danish decent, while 80percent are native Greenlandic or mixed Greenlandic-European. The native population is the same as the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. They speak the same language.

Technical problems associated with the cleanup of historic mines are not new. Nor are they unique to the mining industry or the governmental agencies addressing them. Both face the same issues and challenges of defining the problems, evaluating remediation options and finding the most economic and effective solutions.

Railroad companies and transit authorities have been slow to acknowledge that for many—utility crossings, a direct pipe installation below live rail can be just as effective as a more intrusive traditional cased crossing. Properly designed and specified pipe jacking work, and specifically pressure-balanced microtunneling, coupled with careful specification and analysis of geotechnical monitoring and, where necessary, ground improvement measures, can produce a low-risk, low ground movement solution to the needs of utility companies and municipalities whose services need to pass below urban and rural rail corridors. This paper discusses the design, geotechnical and ground improvement aspects of microtunnel crossings below active heavy and light rail lines and crossings beneath active subway tunnels.

Ore at the Congress gold property, located near Goldbridge, British Columbia, is extremely refractory with most of the gold disseminated in fine-grained arsenopyrite. Metallurgical testwork conducted by Giant Bay Biotech Inc. indicated that biooxidation pretreatment was capable of increasing cyanide gold recovery from the ore to greater than 90%. To determine if the bioleach process could be successfully scaled up, a 225m' (7950-cu ft) commercial size bioleach reactor was built and tested at the mine site in 1989. At that time, the tank was the largest bioleach reactor ever operated. The objectives of the program were: • to ascertain if the biooxidation rates obtained in lab and pilot-scale reactors could be duplicated in a commercial scale tank; • to identify agitation conditions under which the process will function optimally; and • to demonstrate the bioleach process on a scale sufficient to satisfy the owners and potential investors.

Exposure?response relationships between the relative risk of lung cancer and quantitative measures of exposure to asbestos are available from a number of epidemiological studies. Meta-analyses of these relationships have been published by Lash et al. (1997) [Lash, T.L., Crouch, E.A.C., Green, L.C., 1997. A meta-analysis of the relation between cumulative exposure to asbestos and relative risk of lung cancer. Occup. Environ. Med. 54, 254?263] and Hodgson and Darnton (2000) [Hodgson, J.T., Darnton, A., 2000. The quantitative risks of mesothelioma and lung cancer in relation to asbestos exposure. Ann. Occup. Hyg. 44, 565?601]. In this paper, the risks derived in these meta-analyses have been compared. Lash et al., concentrated on process and found that the risk of lung cancer increased as the asbestos is refined by processing. Hodgson and Darnton concentrated on fibre type and found that the risk was highest for exposure to amphibole asbestos (crocidolite and amosite), lowest for chrysotile and intermediate for mixed exposure. Some of the differences between the conclusions from the two meta-analyses are a consequence of the choice of studies included. The range of asbestos types included in the studies in the analysis of Hodgson and Darnton was wider than that in Lash et al., enabling differences between fibre types to be analyzed more readily. There are situations where occupational exposure to chrysotile asbestos has shown no detectable increase in risk of lung cancer. Lost foam casting patterns are foamed polystyrene shapes glued together into the shape of the part to be cast and are coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably land-filled. In this study, a process is developed for the recovery of foamed polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and density separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene.

The increasing scarcity of bentonite coupled with the potential of improved pellet strength have created a need for understanding the effects of thorough bentonite dispersion in taconite concentrate. It has been known for more than a decade that under certain conditions substantial savings of bentonite are realizable by using thorough mixing of bentonite as compared to poor mixing. Extensive work done by J. O. Zetterstrom l at the Univer¬sity of Minnesota indicated the effect of thorough bentonite mixing in a controlled laboratory testing. Commercial hardware was not available at the time Zetterstrom1 paper was published and not much work was done until R. L. Stone, J. M. Karpinsky2, did work with Muller mixing. Nabush 3 worked with the pugmill principle, and Hoogovens 4 and Robe River 5 used the fluidized bed principle. It was very hard to convince iron ore industries to improve the mixing of Bentonite and taconite for the following reasons: A. The initial capital investment for improved mixing equipment; B. The relatively low bentonite cost a few years back, which was not enough to justify new equip¬ment investment;
