The adsorption of copper and lead und their subsequent xanthate uptake were compared at pH 3.0, 6.0 and 9.2 on both fresh and oxidized sphalerite. The extent of adsorption and the rate of adsorption were strongly dependent on pH, with the highest adsorption of Cu and Pb being at pH 9.2. In the presence of both Cu and Pb, Cu adsorption was enhanced and Pb adsorption was suppressed. The adsorption kinetics of Cu and Pb were characterized by two- and three-stage adsorption processes, respectively. The exchange ratio of Cu to Zn was about one and that of Ph to Zn was greater than one and varied with pH. The uptake of xarlthate on "activated" sphalerite was dependent on pH. The rnaximum uptake was found to be at pH 6.0 for Cu-activated sphalerite artd at pH 9.2 for Pb-activated sphalerite. A measure of "activation strength" based on inetal ion adsorption and xanthate uptake was introduced. The activation strength of Cu to Pb was about one at acidic pH, but it was higher at neutral (pH -6) and alkaline (pH -3) conditions. The oxidation of sphalerite decreased Pb and, especially, Cu adsorption and decreased xanthate uptake.

At periodic intervals-typically at the end of each month, quarter, and year- the accounting department in each division of a company distributes a set of reports to the division's managers. These reports describe the financial performance of the division and its major departments over the time period. They identify the revenues generated from the division's products and the costs incurred in their production. The results from individual departments are combined to determine divisional results, and the results from individual divisions are in turn consolidated to determine the results for the overall corporation. Cost reports for each of these activities show actual amounts, budgeted amounts, and the differences between the two. This reporting is carried out for the individual period and for the year to date.

Specifically, these properties include improved selectivity for copper and greater recovery. Some comparisons to the well known General Mills' LIX® 64N have been made. Particular emphasis is given to treating solutions containing very low copper values and high impurity levels.

Traditional pit optimization techniques cannot take account of the requirement to blend ore in order to produce a saleable product, as is the case for iron ore, coal, limestone and other industrial minerals. Various techniques are proposed to overcome the deficiencies, many of which have been tested. The techniques in general involve the combined application of pit optimization and blend optimization techniques.

Geotechnical investigations for underground projects are subject to a variety of constraints, including factors such as accessibility, geological complexity, thickness of oberburden and finance. As a result, the extent of geological data available for route selection and assessment of underground design and construction problems may vary between wide limits. It is essential that the data collected, the degree to which it is representative, and the confidence with which the problems can be anticipated, should be reflected in the type of contract set up and the way in which the contract documents are written. The paper addresses the methods by which investigations can be focussed to make suitable overall ground assessments for feasibility level studies. Subsequent investigations can then be objectively directed toward obtaining data on specific geotechnlcal problems or aspects which impact tunnel, cavern and shaft design and construction. The extent of investigations at the preliminary and design engineering stages must be closely related to the geotechnlcal surveillance and control during excavation. Fixed-price contracts necessitate a secure geotechnical data base prior to bidding, and the provision of that to the tenderers. By contrast, 'design-as-you-go' contracts minimize the geotechnical information needed before construction, yet require immediate assessment of the excavated ground for determination of support requirements and payment category.

Not since 1917 has a foreign company developed a standalone, grass roots gold mine in Russia. With Russia's political changes of the late 1980s, development of mineral prospects once again beckons foreign investors. Cyprus Amax's interest in Russia began before the mid-1991 breakup of the former Soviet Union. In 1990, Cyprus Amax began searching for such an opportunity. Early this year, production will begin at the Kubaka gold project located in the Russian Far East, near the Arctic Circle. The Kubaka project is a 1.75-kt/d (1,930-stpd) open-pit operation that will produce more than 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold. Identifying Russian mining opportunities In late 1990, the first Cyprus Amax people travelled to Russia. The trip was to determine the potential for western firms to develop profitable mines. This encouraging visit suggested that Cyprus Amax focus on the Russian Far East with its mineral riches and its easier access to the United States. The company's initial efforts thus focused on working with the Soviet Union's Northeast Geologic Expedition, the then government agency for exploration and geology in Russia's Far East. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Cyprus Amax continued working with the same people, but they now represented new independent, nongovernmental entities. For three years, Cyprus Amax investigated numerous deposits. This resulted in the identification of two properties of significant interest, one of which was Kubaka. Location Kubaka is located in the Northern Evensk District of the Magadan Oblast in the Russian Far East. This is an area east of Siberia. The project is situated in a mountainous area of the Kolyma Range, about 300 km (985 miles) south of the Arctic Circle. It is 285 km (180 miles) north of the fishing village of Evensk and 380 km (235 miles) northeast of the silver-mining town Omsukchan. The site is 950 km (590 miles) northeast of the regional capital city of Magadan. Magadan, the political and economic center of the Oblast, has a population of about 150,000 people. It is served by a year-round deep-water port (with icebreaker assist) and an international airport with service to Moscow and Anchorage, AK. Access to the Magadan region

An innovative biological treatment system designed to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and immobilize metals from cyanide leach operations is described. A pilot-plant demonstration was conducted to detoxify cyanide and immobilize several metals from a process stream at the McCoy/Cove Mine. Testing was performed under the EPA’s Mine Waste Technology and Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation Demonstration Programs. This technology was successful in detoxifying cyanide and effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed. Results show that biological treatment can offer an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

Potash is an important natural mineral used largely as a fertilizer in the production of food and fiber. About 93 percent of all potash consumed globally is used in agriculture as fertilizer. The balance is used to manufacture potassium chemicals. Most potash is extracted by conventional underground mining methods. Solution mining is used when underground deposits are irregular and very deep. The other main production method involves the evaporation of brines in shallow salt lakes, followed by the harvesting of potassium minerals.

"Point cloud technology is now an indispensable tool in geological and geotechnical data collection, interpretation and analysis. Open pit and underground mines of all sizes are regularly collecting point cloud data as Laser Scanning (LiDAR) and Photogrammetry surveying devices have finally become affordable and the workflows fast and efficient. Past challenges of large data processing and manipulation are gone with recent technological advancements in computer hardware and software. These innovations reduce file sizes, ease rendering requirements and allow for the implementation of real-time 3D viewers and surface meshing tools. With its ability to remotely (safely), rapidly and accurately extract large quantities of georeferenced and 3D-oriented data, point cloud technology provides numerous applications to the geomechanical field. The list of uses is continuously growing, so this paper specifically focuses on digital outcrop modeling and digital terrain engineering. INTRODUCTION Point Clouds The high-resolution and increasing availability of point cloud technology is rapidly improving open pit and underground mines’ investigation, interpretation and characterization of site geology and rock mass properties (Kemeny et al., 2015; Lyons-Baral, 2012). LiDAR and photogrammetry are common remote sensing methods employed to measure the coordinates of surfaces in three dimensions (3D), providing the X, Y and Z locations, and typically the reflective intensity and/or the visible three-band color of each point (Figure 1). LiDAR uses either a time-of-flight or phase-shift measurement of a laser beam reflected off targeted surfaces and received back into the device. Photogrammetry generates point clouds by merging multiple overlapping photographs and uses stereographic plotting to define the locations of object points in 3-D space. These methods can be deployed from airplanes, unpiloted aerial systems (UAS or drones), tripods, land vehicles, and even in a mobile backpack shown in Figure 2. RADAR, Total Station-Prism and other remote sensing systems also offer very precise “point clouds”, but this paper does not address these due to their higher cost and lower versatility and mobility. Technology In the past few years point cloud acquisition device prices have dropped significantly, devices have become lighter, smaller and easier to operate, and processing and utilizing the data has also become faster and easier. Device size improvements include mobile backpacks (Figure 2) and handheld mobile LiDAR (CISRO, 2014), allowing mobile scanning in tight spaces both above and below ground or inside and outside of man-made structures. Airborne data acquisition options have expanded dramatically with the spread of UAS technology as seen in Figure 3 (Hexagon Geosystems, 2015). Once UAS usage regulations are sorted out, these versatile machines will be everywhere, offering high resolution coordinate scans, imagery and other remote sensing. While backpacks and handhelds allow access to tight quarters, UAS permit rapid data capture from narrow to broad areas with multiple perspectives reducing data “shadows.”"

INTRODUCTION In 1979 the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health of the Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) defined a programme of work needed to improve radon dosimetry and monitoring. A Group of Experts in this field was established by the NEA and at the first meeting of the Group the authors were designated an initial task with the following terms of reference:- To review dosimetry of radon, thoron and their daughters, and in particular:- - to examine analytical models for the assessment of dose to individuals who are exposed to aerosol mixtures of these nuclides; - to examine the state of knowledge of the characteristics of aerosol mixtures of these nuclides and other factors that influence the dose to the lung, and identify those parameters which should be measured for dosimetric purposes in radiological surveillance programmes; - to identify areas where further study or research are needed. In this presentation we attempt to examine, with these objectives, the relationship between exposure to radon and thoron daughter aerosols expressed in terms of the working level month l (WLM), or its SI equivalent, and dose accumulated by sensitive tissues of the lower respiratory tract. Over the past two decades many attempts have been made to calculate the lung dose equivalent to l WLM exposure in mine atmospheres, usually in terms of the maximum dose to basal cells in a small part of the bronchial tree. The calculations have employed variously detailed models of airway anatomy, aerosol deposition, ciliary clearance and dosimetry of tissue at the bronchial surface, and are well reviewed elsewhere (Walsh, 1970; UNSCEAR, 1977; Jacobi, 1977; Fry, 1977). They agree in the conclusion that basal cells in segmental bronchi (between about the third and fifth bronchial generations) receive the highest dose, although estimates of this dose differ by more than an order of magnitude, ranging from about 0.2 to 12 rads per WLM (2 mGy to 120 mGy). The most critical parameters of these models are the assumed depths of basal cells below the bronchial surface and the fraction of the WL carried by free ions. When more realistic values of these parameters are substituted (Jacobi, 1977), the dispersion in calculated maximum doses to basal cells is reduced to give a much smaller range from about 0.3 to 1 rad/WLM (3 to 10 mGy/WLM). The parameters and methods employed in these various models, however, remain too diverse to infer the sensitivity of the dose conversion to practical variations in aerosol characteristics and the additional factors determining lung deposition and clearance. We have therefore taken the approach of developing newer models (Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James et al, 1980) that can encompass the range of available experimental data on the physical and biological behaviour of radon and thoron daughters and also accommodate the different interpretations that can be put upon them. X-ray computed tomography (CT) techniques have been developed for the medical services field in order to provide accurate internal images of the human body.(l-7) Now, a decade later, CT techniques are starting to be used in non-medical applications such as, non-destructive testing(8), flow pattern analysis(9), drill core examination (10,11), and coal characterization(12,13). In these fields of application, CT techniques offer the potential to extend our knowledge and understanding beyond that provided by more traditional methods of analysis. Although, CT systems involve very specialized and expensive equipment, the advantage of x-ray CT in revealing the detailed internal structure of an opaque material non-destructively should make it an important tool to provide a more complete analysis of mineral processing phenomena. X-ray CT systems generally consist of an x-ray source/collimation unit and a detector/data acquisition unit. The object to be examined is placed between the two functional units as shown in Figure 1. With this system the density array of selected cross sections of a chosen opaque object can be obtained in two dimensions. There are numerous areas in mineral processing to which x-ray CT technology can be applied and it is the aim of this article to identify these potential areas noting the advantages and limitations of the technology. Particular emphasis is placed on particle composition distribution and multiphase fluid flow measurements. In the case of particle composition distribution, liberation analysis and coal washability are considered. While in the case of multiphase fluid flow, swirl flow in the air-sparged hydrocyclone is given by way of example.

Introduction Pure alunite (KAl3 (SO4 )3 (OH)6 ) contains 37% A1203. In the alunite ore found on Milos Island, Greece, opal is the principal gangue while some aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides are also present. Processing of alunite ore leads to the recovery of potassium sulfate, alusil (alumina-silica mixture), and sulfur dioxide. An interesting process has been developed in Greece (Svoronos, 1977) consisting mainly of roasting the alunite ore mixed with KCl to disrupt the mineral lattice in preparation for separating its components. The thermal decomposition of alunite at approximately 600°C occurs by the reaction: KAl3 (SO4)3 (OH)6 + nSiO2 + 6KC1 - 4 K2SO4 + 3 A1203 . nSiO2 + 6 HCl + 3H20 According to the process pure alunite mixed with 543 kg KCl, 840 kg K2SO4, 370 kg alusil, 264 kg HCl, and 65 kg H2O are produced. The roasted calcine is leached in hot water. The potassium sulfate leach slurry is then thickened and washed to obtain a solid residue (alusil) plus a solution rich in potassium sulfate. Assuming the alunite ore feed consists of 50% to 60% alunite, the solid residue might consist of approximately 22% to 27% A1203, silica, iron, and titanium oxides. This leach residue could be digested in a hot sodium hydroxide solution to dissolve alumina. An amount of the alumina (approximately 10%) would not dissolve. In addition, part of the silica would dissolve requiring removal from the solution in a subsequent desilication operation. The same leach residue could be attacked by mineral acids such as a diluted hydrochloric acid to extract aluminum chloride (Sawyer et al., 1983). Alumina and aluminum are presently produced from bauxite of which Greece has important reserves. If this aluminous material (alusil) could be beneficiated by any physical process, then it would be considered as a raw material for the production of fire-clay refractories instead of an alternate source of alumina. Experimental procedure Extensive laboratory work (mineralogical and chemical analyses) indicates that alusil is a mixture of liberated (mostly) alumina and silica particles, not a natural silicate mineral. Table 1 shows the chemical assays of two alusil samples that were obtained from a roasted alunite ore leaching pilot plant. The samples used for the experiments were a very fine alusil powder (K80 = 400 mesh, 38 µm). These were pulped in tap water. Desliming of the pulp before each flotation test was ineffective. Flotation tests were performed in a 2000 ml Denver cell. A standard 500-g sample was first conditioned at a pulp density 50% solids for 5 min with hydrofluoric (HF) acid solution (40%). The temperature of the conditioned pulp was measured and kept nearly constant at 50°C. The pH of the conditioned pulp was also regulated to 2.5-3 with HF solution. Then ARMAC C solution (2%) as well as two drops of fuel oil and one drop of AEROFROTH 65 were added and the pulp was reconditioned for 2 min. After conditioning, the viscous pulp was transfered to the flotation cell. It was then diluted with warm water to about 15% solids and floated to separate silica from alumina particles. A rougher froth product that was cleaned and recleaned was obtained from the flotation tests.

Batch laboratory-scale flotation tests were conducted on some carbonate-containing sedimentary phosphate ores to obtain concentrates suitable for chemical processing. The phosphate samples tested contained both calcite and dolomite. The calcitic phosphate ore was from Israel and the dolomitic ores were from China, India, Egypt, and Pakistan. The phosphate sample from Pakistan also contained a significant amount of silica. Several flotation techniques that have been proposed for upgrading carbonate -containing phosphate ores and concentrates were tested. Two processes gave better results compared with the other processes tested: a modified IMC anionic process and a. phosphoric acid depression process. At the best flotation conditions tested, phosphate concentrates assaying 32.5%-36.5% P205, 44.0%-51.0% CaO, and 0.6%-1.0% MgO were obtained at 69%-76% overall P205 recoveries from run-of-mine (ROM) ores containing 16.0%-25.0% P205, 40.0%-52.0% CaO, and 1.0%-11.6% MgO.

The critical surface tension of wetting values (Ye) of realgar (AsS), talc [Mg3si401o (OH) 2]' stibnite (Sb2S3), and sulfur (S) were determined by flotation in the absence of conventional flotation collectors as 38.7, 38.0, 35.5, and 30.0 dyne/cm, respectively. The surface tensions of flotation media were arranged by methanol. Separation of binary mixtures of these minerals was performed exploiting their Ye differences-which form the basis of the "ganuna flotation process". One step flotation test showed that sulfur floats preferentially from its mixtures with realgar and stibnite at recoveries of 73.6 and 70.7 % and grades of 81.7 and 91.2 %, respectively. The separation of stibnite from realgar gave a recovery of 4.1 % and a grade of 41.2 % for stibnite, indicate that a minimal Ye difference of 3.6±0.2 dyne/cm is essential for such separation when conventional flotation reagents are not used. This paper presents data and describes the approach employed in these separations.

One of the most common errors uncovered while performing a reserve, or resource, audit is not in the geological modeling or grade problems due to poor sampling, prepartion or assaying. The error most commonly found is in tonnage or, more specifically, in the tonnage factor - that factor applied to volume to derive tonnage. Tonnage factors In the metric system, the tonnage factor is the density, or specific gravity. Specific gravity (Sp.g.) is defined by Dana (1947): • "The specific gravity of a mineral is the ratio of its density to that of water at 4° C (39.2° F). • "Density is the mass of the unit volume or weight of the body divided by the weight of an equal volume of water." When Sp.g. is multiplied by the metric volume it yields metric tonnes. In the English system, the tonnage factor is usually expressed in cubic feet per short ton (cu ft/st). When the volume in cubic feet is divided by cu ft/st, the resulting figure is in English short tons. Table 1 gives the cu ft/st factors equivalent to specific gravities from 1.6 Sp.g. to 5.8 Sp.g. The table is based on the following equation: cu ft/st = 0.9072 divided by Sp.g. times 0.02832 The blase attitude that most geologists have toward tonnage factors is echoed in the prevailing definitions of Reserves and Ore, as provided by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (S.C Form S-18), Canadian National Policy 2A and the SME Proposal for Reporting Terminology (SME February 1991). In each case, it is stated that "quantity" (SEC, SME), or "tonnage" (Can.2A), "is computed from dimensions revealed in...." etc. Unfortunately, "dimensions" do not directly yield tonnage. Dimensions must be factored by density to derive tonnage.

In this study, the cyclonic static microbubble flotation column (FCSMC) was investigated for fluorite beneficiation. The structure and principle of the specially designed column are described. Fluorite samples from the tungsten separation tailings of the Shizhuyuan Mine, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, P.R. China, were tested using a small-scale continuous flotation test unit, and concentrates with a fluorite grade higher than 98% were obtained. One rougher and three cleaner stages in the FCSMC achieved the same separation performance as one rougher and eight cleaners in conventional flotation cells. This greatly simplified the flotation circuit and reduced operating costs.

Introduction Ontario's diverse industrial mineral resource base includes structural minerals such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, clay, shale, limestone, and dolostone. These resources are used to produce aggregates, brick, metallurgical stone, fillers, cement, lime, and other construction materials. The majority of the operations are in deposits of Palezoic and Quaternary age in southern Ontario, close to the major markets. Province-wide, there were more than 140 Mt (154 million st) of aggregates produced in 1985. About 115 Mt (128 million st) of that was produced in southern Ontario with the rest being largely from Crown land in northern Ontario. Structural industrial minerals account for more than 80% of the value of total industrial mineral production. The remaining 20% is accounted for by the nonstructural minerals, such as salt, which is produced in the southwestern part of the province. A host of other nonstructural industrial minerals are known. Production, though, is currently restricted to calcite, gypsum, quartz, talc, nepheline syenite, and byproduct metallurgical sulfur products (Fig. 1). Major production is close to the large markets of urbanized southern Ontario and the northeastern and northcentral US. With an abundant variety of industrial mineral resources and the large population within 650 km (400 miles) of most deposits, the market offers great potential. Ontario's nine million people accounted for about 35% of Canada's entire $476.3 billion gross domestic product in 1985. This equates to about one-third of the nation's buying power being within a 200-km (125-mile) radius of Toronto. This major concentration of industrial and economic activity has resulted in a well-developed industrial minerals industry that fulfills most of the structural industrial minerals demand in Ontario. Nonstructural industrial minerals are similarly well placed to compete in this high demand area. Although Ontario manufacturers still import some of these materials, Ontario products are achieving significant market share. And, they serve the needs of neighboring provinces and states. Present production and trends Ontario has traditionally produced significant amounts of industrial minerals. This produc¬tion had a value of $956 million in 1984 (Table 1). Structural materials production in 1985 and 1986 approached or exceeded levels not seen since the early 1970s. Many new products have been developed using these raw materials. U.S. mines are among the most efficient, productive and safest in the world. Much of that efficiency is due to the high-technology equipment and processes available to the industry. The U.S. mining industry can produce more material now with fewer people than it could a few decades ago. And that material can be produced more safely. However, the workforce is growing older and fewer young people are filling the holes created by retirements. Even though mining is one of the highest paid occupations in the United States, young people believe they can find jobs that pay almost as well without the risks and the often remote locations associated with mines.

Industrial minerals processing has gained importance lately, not only due to its wide range of new and regular applications in processing different industrial minerals, but also due to the strict specs under which products are commercialized. Among the processes applied to industrial minerals, flotation is a leading technology. The laboratory study and commercial operation demonstrate that the sulfonated reagents are very effective collectors for industrial minerals. This paper compares synthetic petroleum sulfonate with fatty acid on iron reduction in glass sand processing and describes the effect of conditioning pH on iron reduction using synthetic petroleum sulfonate as collector, the effect of molecular weight of natural and synthetic petroleum sulfonates on their flotation performance and the enhancement made for certain products.
