In deposits with highly skewed grade distributions, such as precious metals deposits, proper handling of the outlier high grade data is very crucial to the ore reserve estimation. Although some recent geostatistical techniques are available to handle the estimation problems with these outlier data, ordinary kriging or conventional methods are still widely used to estimate the ore reserves for such deposits. One reason for this is the fact that the alternative methods offered are either too complex or too exhaustive for the mine engineers and geologist who often do not have the expertise or the time to apply these methods. This paper presents a new 2-step kriging algorithm "Outlier Restricted Kriging" (ORK) which can be a simple and a practical tool to use where the ordinary kriging will fail to handle the outlier high grade data properly in block grade estimation. The paper details the methodology and discusses the results of its application to a gold deposit.

The selective depression of pyrite from the Kentucky No. 9 coal seam was systematically examined using various kinds of inorganic and organic chemicals. Most of the organic chemicals tested showed little selectivity in pyrite depression. It was found that both orthophosphate and pyrophosphate were effective for the selective depression of coal pyrite in coal flotation using fuel oil as a collector. At substantially low concentrations of pyrophosphate, the flotation of coal pyrite was completely depressed over a wide pH range, while the coal flotation remained unaffected. The mechanism of the selective depression of pyrite by phosphates was explained with the help of thermodynamic calculations of iron-phosphate-water systems and zeta-potential measurements. It was shown that pyrophosphate reacts strongly with the iron ions of pyrite to form stable hydrophilic iron pyrophosphate complexes on pyrite surfaces.

The Northeast Raw Water Tunnel transports untreated water to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department's (DWSD) Northeast Water Plant where it is treated and distributed. The occurrence of a subsidence area which was attributed to the tunnel prompted the DWSD to have the tunnel investigated. After an extensive historical and geotechnical investigation, two access shafts were constructed along the alignment in the vicinity of the subsidence. Following completion of the shafts, the subsidence area was inspected in the wet prior to dewatering the tunnel. Upon the completion of dewatering, a dry inspection was performed. During the dry inspection, an area of significant distress was encountered where sand and silt were boiling into the tunnel along with large volumes of groundwater. This distressed area was located 800m (1/2 mile) north of the original subsidence area. The tunnel was immediately refilled with water and an emergency repair program was planned and implemented. As a result of the distressed nature of the secondary tunnel liner, dewatering of the tunnel could not be performed until the secondary liner and the surrounding soils were stabilized. This paper presents a case history of both the investigation and the repairs of the Northeast Raw Water Tunnel including the various grouting and unique tunnel stabilization methodologies which were utilized.

What prompted the merger of the two long-established American Mining Congress/National Coal Association (AMC/NCA) groups that combine the coal, hard-rock, industrial- and agricultural-minerals sectors of mining? Both associations have been facing similar stresses for several years - structural changes in their respective industries, the changing personality and role of government and well-financed and organized opposition groups. In 1993, the AMC board of directors undertook efforts at reorganizing the association. One board member, who serves on both boards, suggested it might be time to give serious consideration to merging the organizations. This is an idea that had been discussed more or less informally at least three times during my tenure at NCA. Negotiations toward a merger began after that and were consummated in February of this year.

Concentrate flow rates were measured for the flotation of -100-mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer-controlled 0.076 x 3.5-m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height, airflow and solid feed rates. The specific projected surface areas of the feed, concentrate and tailing streams were determined from the measured particle size distributions. The results obtained show that the concen¬trate flow rate was independent of recovery zone height but was dependent on the hydrostatic pressure setting (measure of froth depth), gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of bubble surface area flux and the specific particle projected surface area.

Although it may be perfectly acceptable to neglect the belt's elastic behavior for many conveyor designs, this can lead to disastrous consequences for others. So how can a designer know in advance if a dynamic analysis is required? Unfortunately, in many cases it is impossible to foresee or predict dynamic problems prior to performing the actual analysis. However, a basic understanding of the principles of conveyor dynamics, as well as knowledge regarding common problem areas, can significantly help the designer make more educated decisions during the initial design stage. This paper will demonstrate how static calculations alone can incorrectly represent the true behavior of the conveyor system. It will also discuss the importance of correctly sizing and locating the take-up system to provide the most economical conveyor design. The use of capstans will also be discussed followed by two examples demonstrating their proper operation.

Cationic flotation of quartz is currently utilized in the concentration of iron ores and the cleaning of phosphate concentrates. The present work deals with depression of quartz in the presence of aluminum aqueous species during cationic flotation. It was established that aluminum species depress the flotation of quartz with an amine, especially under neutral and slightly alkaline conditions. With an amine as the collector, studies of the adsorption (abstraction) of Al species on quartz surfaces, as a function of pH, correlated well with the depression of this mineral. The presence of Al species also enhanced the depressant action of corn starch on quartz. In addition, the sodium salt of ethylenediaminotetraacetic (EDTA) was found to be an effective complexing agent to suppress the depression caused by aluminum ions.

Lignite deposits in Poland occur within clastic Tertiary series at the depth suitable for opencast mining. Aboundant aquifers with the good quality waters that should be protected against contamination or depletion often accompany them. Landscape and underground water protection are the main regional environ-mental factors that limit the possibility of exploration and mining; presented on map of lignite bearing series distribution allow to delimit areas "free" for exploration and mining and areas where some limitations can be met up to no admittance of any industrial activity.

The Elkhorn mining district is located 35 kilometers southeast of Helena, Montana, on the southeast edge of the Boulder Batholith. Geologically the district consists of a folded sequence of Paleozoic limestones and shales which have been thermally metamorphosed and altered by monzonite to diorite intrusives related to the Cretaceous Boulder Batholith. For the most part, the skarns are associated with metasomatic: replacement of calc-silicate hornfels, diorite and marble by iron rich, dark green pyroxene, garnet, sulfides, the district contains excess of 30,000 Kg.

Water conservation and compliance strategy can be cause for success or failure of a new or existing mining operation. Water accounting at outset, and pit and waste dump planning, may not fully consider total inflows, or sediment loads encountered during mine life. Environmental impact assessments, and permitting often dictates the rules, and these may change, to be more stringent, during course of mine development. This paper will identify techniques to control unprojected fresh water, or increased surface water flows in surface mine operations.

Theory and practice are described for a new processing method capable of precise mineral separations based primarily on differences in particle specific gravities at specific gravity split points from 1.5 to 21.0 and beyond. Separations are analogous to those achieved using rotating heavy media, except that the effective specific gravity of the fluid is created magnetically using a relatively dilute, low-viscosity, water-based magnetic fluid. Results reported here for a large, laboratory flow-through separator include: 1) 99% grade with 97% recovery in single pass separation of a suite of heavy minerals from quartz at I0 kg/h, 14 tph/rm2 of duct cross section, 2) 90% grade and recovery in single-pass separation of mixtures of sand-size, non-magnetic rutile (4.23 specific gravity) and zircon (4.72 specific gravity) at throughputs of 35 kg/h, 47 tph/rm2 of duct cross section, 3) partition curves having Ep90-10 transition widths 5% or less of mineral specific gravities, and 4) essential confirmation of the theory.

Mining managers trying to rapidly reduce production costs tend to implement a traditional set of topdown managerial practices: reductions in production volume, employee layoffs, renegotiation of supplier contracts, cancellation of employee training, restrictions on travel, reductions in office supplies, and so forth. While these practices do reduce costs, the benefits are often limited in both magnitude and duration, and the workforce is usually left demoralized. Successful cost-cutters take a different approach. They make the continuous reduction of costs a priority for all members of the organization, whether managers or workers. The culture of these firms emphasizes the commitment, voluntarily given, of individuals and work groups to this goal. Cost-cutting practices often reject all of the traditional methods mentioned above, but are far more numerous, innovative and successful. This culture of cost reduction is the result of a set of leadership competencies that establish direction for the organization, align the organization's various constituencies with this direction, and motivate and inspire the organization. Cost reduction then becomes a routine task rather than a heroic achievement.

OPEN STOPING An open stope is an underground cavity from which the initial ore has been mined. Caving of the opening is prevented (at least temporarily) by support from the unmined ore or waste left in the stope, in the form of pillars, and the stope walls (also called ribs or abutments). In addition to this primary support system of open stoping, some secondary support may also be required using rockbolts, reinforcing rods, split pipes, or shotcrete to stabilize the rock surface immediately adjacent to the opening. The secondary reinforcement procedure does not preclude the method classified as open stoping. There are many forms of open-stope mining used to extract the initial material from a mine. Having once established that the mineral and waste rock are competent enough to use an open-stoping method, and assuming that the reserve is not classified as gassy, the Form which the method will take is primarily determined by the dip and thickness of the reserve. How these two factors affect the selection of the open-stope mining is discussed in a later chapter. At this point it will suffice to say that the classification of the open-stopes mining system which follows is based on whether dry' broken materials flows by gravity or whether it must be moved by nongravity methods where energy must be supplied to move the material. Room-and Pillar-Mining Room-and-pillar mining is an open-stoping method where mining progresses in a nearly horizontal or low angle direction by opening multiple stopes or rooms, leaving solid material to act as pillars to support the vertical load. Since the direction of excavation (angle of dip) is below that which would cause the dry material to flow by gravity to a drawpoint or gathering point, the material must be loaded in the room where it was extracted and transported to a point where it will flow, either by gravity or mechanical means, to a central gathering point to be taken out of the mine. This is an important aspect of room-and-pillar mining which differentiates the system from other open-stope mining methods which rely heavily upon gravity to transport ore from where it was broken to a lower elevation, usually through a drawpoint. There are many variations of the method which go by a number of names in local districts: breast stoping, breast-and-bench stoping, board-and-pillar, stall-and-pillar, and panel-and-pillar are all basically open-stope room-and-pillar mining. In some instances detailed stope planning is almost nonexistent; i.e., the operator simply follows the visual pay values, leaves pillars only where necessary, and tries to locate them in the zones of lower value. This method of mining is as old as the beginning of underground mining itself, dating back thousands of years. Early in the history of mining in this country, the term "gophering" was used to describe this method (Peek 1941). The term is appropriate, for it brings to mind the exact results of this type of system-a random and irregular room-and-pillar mine. In other instances where the mineral values are consistent both in physical dimensions and quality, the mine layout can be planned to the last detail, resulting in a uniform room-and-pillar mine. Coal, trona, gilsonite, potash, oil shale, salt, limestone, and sandstone mines can usually follow such a system. Today, most metal mines using a room-and-pillar operation try to mine as regular a pattern as possible but deviation in height, width, thickness, dip, and grade of the ore results in comparable deviation in the mine plan. Variations of the Room-and-pillar System It is necessary to briefly describe some of the many variations of the room-and-pillar system of mining, enabling the reader to fully explore the concepts and become familiar with the terminology used before going on to the details of mine design. Full-Face Slicing: If in the process of opening the rooms the total vertical extent of the mineral values of the particular seam or strata are extracted from the advance of one vertical face, the term used to describe this is full-face slicing. This face is also known as the "breast." There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the roof (back) to be mined later. To be able to extract the full-face height in one pass, the mining equipment must obviously be designed to reach as high as the back. In an Appalachian coal mine, this may be all of 660.4 mm (26 in.); for a future oil shale property it might be 15.24 m (50 ft). Normally, however, in a majority of mines where the mining face gets over 6.09 to 6.7 m (20 to 22 ft), the tendency is to divide the face into more than one pass. Over this height, it becomes difficult to properly see and remove loose rock from the back with a hand "mining bar." Where the process of taking down loose rock has become mechanized, higher full-face mining can be safely practiced. Most eastern and midwestern coal seams and western uranium, trona, and potash seams in the United States are easily reached in a single face; many limestone, lead, and zinc mines must resort, at least in part, to "multiple-slicing" to remove all the minerals of value. Multiple Slicing (also known as multiple-pass mining): In many cases it is not practical to carry the full vertical height of the mining horizon as a full face. The face is divided into parts known as the breast, bench, and/or brow. Within most of Canada and the northern third of the United States, the soils overlying bedrock are of glacial origin. Tunnelling in glacial soils presents numerous challenges to the contractor, including abrupt changes in soil type, boulders and glacial erratics, water bearing fine sands and silts, toxic or explosive gases, and glacial till. This paper examines the available techniques for geotechnical exploration in glacial soils; the relationship between subsurface conditions predicted by various techniques and conditions actually encountered during tunnel construction; and potential improvements in the planning and implementation of geotechnical explorations. Case histories of geotechnical exploration and tunnel construction in glacial soils are also reviewed.

Earlier we described the uranium mineralogy of an areally broad sampling of Crownpoint ore, including the characterization of organic carbonaceous material associated with the uranium mineral. (1) We also reported on the leaching behavior of Crownpoint ores with a mild alkaline leaching system, oxygen (02)-sodium bicarbonate (NaHC03). (2) There was a wide range of leaching responses, with samples from some areas leaching at a slow rate with low uranium recovery. Evidence indicates that in these samples the organic material is intimately associated with the uranium mineral and shields it to some extent from contact by the leachate. (1,2) One method to obtain faster leach rates and higher recoveries is to use a chemically severe leaching system such as sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI) as an oxidant. (3) The use of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and an oxidant for leaching ore in surface milling operations is widely practiced to effect high recovery of uranium (U308) from the ore. (4,5,6) The U308 is mobilized as the disulfate complex, U02(S04)224-, or possibly, the trisulfate complex, U02(S04)34-, is the soluble species. (7) Sulfuric acid leachate formulations were used in the first in-situ leaching operation in the Shirley Basin in Wyoming. (8) More recently H2S04 formulations have been used in the Rocky Mountain Energy field tests in the Powder River Basin (Bear Creek) and in the Teapot forma¬tion at Nine Mile Lake site near Casper. (9,10) Laboratory studies related to the use of H2SO4 for in-situ leaching have been reported (11-17) and Yan has .reported packed column leach studies on Crownpoint ore using H2504 and oxidant. The geostatistical estimation of the reserves of an ore deposit is highly dependent on the quality and stability of the variograms of the sample grades. Gold deposits commonly show a skewed grade distribution. The few high grades at the tail end of the distribution produce unstable variograms that are difficult to model. If these grades are cut to a lower grade value or removed, more stable variograms are obtained. However, outlier grades may make a deposit economically viable, and their cutting or removal should be treated with caution. To reduce (but not to eliminate) the effect of high grades, a transformation of the raw data can be performed. Most commonly used transformations are: logarithm, gaussian anamorphosis, rank and indicator. Variograms of the transformed grades are resistant to high grades and present a clear structure. The weak point of data transformation appears when grades are estimated by kriging; the estimates are very sensitive to slight variations in the parameters of the back-transformation. More robust variogram estimation procedures can also be used, but often these procedures are not suitable for skewed grade distributions as they are based on an assumption of a contaminated normal distribution. The Porgera gold deposit in Papua New Guinea has a highly skewed grade distribution, with grades ranging from 0.01 to 3500 g/t and a coefficient of variation greater than 5. For the geostatistical estimation of the high grade zone of the deposit, the influence of the high grades was quantified by calculating and comparing the following variograms: raw grades, raw grades with the highest grades removed and transformed grades. The study confirmed that there is no general method for handling high grades in a geostatistical reserve study. Several methods should be tried to quantify the influence of high grades.

The role of sodium silicate in the anionic flotation of a Florida phosphate ore was investigated using laboratory continuous flotation tests, frothabiliry tests and SEM observations. In the absence of sodium silicate, Ca I+ promoted the unwanted activation of quartz by forming calcium bearing precipitates. The addition of sodium silicate enhanced the flotation efficiency through: 1) the removal of impurity minerals and calcium-bearing precipitates from quartz surfaces by dispersion, 2) drier and more persistent froths stabilized by oily droplets containing calcium silicate precipitates, and 3) higher specific flotation rates of phosphate relative to quartz, leading to faster flotation rates and increased selectivity of separation.

Pea Ridge Iron Ore Co., previously Meramec Mining Co., a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp., mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge mine. The Pea Ridge property, now wholly owned by St. Joe, is located near Sullivan, MO, about 112 km (70 miles) southwest of St. Louis. The ore body was delineated in the mid-1950s by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drill¬ing in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the ore body was minable. Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Pro¬duction commenced in April 1964. The ore body is overlain by about 396 m (1300 ft) of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 792 m (2600 ft) long, and up to 182 m (600 ft) thick. It dips about 1.39 rad (80°) and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 45-m (150-ft) intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the ore body on 58-m (190-ft) centers. Banks of stopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modi¬fied shrinkage stoping method (Fig. 1). This was done by undercutting a 12 m (40 ft) wide by 45-m (150-ft) long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 1.5-m (5-ft) intervals. A 20-m (65-ft) sill was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fin¬gers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a "lattice" of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar re¬covery program was necessary (Fig. 2). INITIAL PILLAR RECOVERY PROGRAM The program was started in the upper western por¬tion of the ore body, furthest from the shafts. Due to the fact that the ore body narrows in the western extremity, the stope orientation was changed to mini¬mize required development. This left pillars 18 to 24 m (60 to 80 ft) wide and up to 79 m (260 ft) in length. The area selected for the start of the program had been developed between the uppermost level at 419 m (1375 ft) below surface and the 510-m (1675-ft) level. Due to the 91-m (300-ft) difference in depth, sublevels were driven on 15-m (50-ft) intervals and the ore was taken by rather classical sublevel stoping methods (Fig. 3). This left a structure with accesses compatible with drilling with 114-mm (41/2-in.) bore drifters mounted on columns. Most holes were drilled 63.5 mm (21h in.) diam and reamed to 100 or 127 mm (4 or 5 in.). Practical depth capability was about 21 m (70 ft) for holes above horizontal and 13 to 15 m (45 to 50 ft) for holes below horizontal. The interdependence of these long pillars necessitated that several of them be blasted simultaneously, making large blasts the only practical approach. Due to the required length of such loading cam¬paigns, it was necessary to select an explosive which could stand in the hole in an underground mine for a 4 to 6 week period. After some consideration a pump¬ able water gel was selected for both uphole and down¬hole loading. This afforded a high velocity, high density explosive which could be handled in large quantities. Loading the downholes was a fairly straightforward process. The holes were lined with an 8 mil polybutylene plastic sleeve and water gel was pumped into them with a double diaphragm pump mounted on the bottom of a stainless steel tub with a 81-kg (180-1b) capacity. At the Freeport Indonesia Grasberg Mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, a system of underground drainholes and surface drain wells have been designed and are currently under construction. The underground drainholes are located at elevations of approximately 9,600 feet and the surface drainwells located at elevations ranging between 12,500 and 13,000 feet. Together they will be used to drain the ground water contained within relatively incompetent rock. This drain system will allow for the successful dry mining of the open pit, and provide slope stability of the pit wall. The surface drain well network, when completed will allow for the draining of ground water to the Amole Drift where the underground drainholes are constructed.

The recent nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in soluble-salt flotation systems suggest that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Previously reported flotation results confirm this surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model. These results also indicate that the sign of the surface charge has a significant effect on the extent of particle dispersion/aggregation. In this regard, the nature of such particle interaction forces at high ionic strengths are examined to improve our understanding of these systems. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is now being used to directly measure the interaction forces responsible for the stability of these alkali halide aggregates observed in optical microscopy studies. Results from this study indicate that, while repulsive hydration forces exist between similarly charged hydrophilic particles, attractive forces exist between oppositely charged hydrophilic particles in high ionic strength solutions.
