Introduction A major uncertainty in assessing the potential for heap-and dump-leach projects is how to determine the extraction-rate curve for the recovery of the mineral values from coarse ore. Such material could either be run-of-mine (ROM) or primary crushed ore. The problem with field testing coarse ore, especially for new projects, is the large scale and extended leach times needed to accurately determine the final extraction-rate curve. At least 5 x 103 to 5 x 104 t of representative ROM ore are typically required for a copper test heap, and much more is often used. Kennecott, for example, recently constructed a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) ROM test heap at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. In such coarse ore operations, the ultimate level of extraction will require a leach cycle that can extend from several months to a few years. Quite often, project development schedules do not provide the luxury of mining such large quantities of material or running such long tests. Instead, test data are usually limited to results from column leach studies on relatively fine ore, often with a top size that does not exceed 25 mm. Maximum leach times are also short, typically less than a year before an initial decision is needed on project viability. Proposed method One approach to estimating the recovery from a coarse ore leach is to assume that the leach solution will have some ultimate penetration distance into the rock. Then, the final level of mineral extraction in this "leached rim" will equal the ultimate level of extraction identified in various testing programs. Obviously, if the radius of a given rock fragment is less than the penetration distance, that fragment will be fully leached at the end of the operation. With larger rock sizes, the percent recovery will fall off as the size increases and the fraction of unpenetrated rock mass increases. Such an approach sounds simple but is likely to be complex when applied to a real project. For example, the penetration distance will be a function of both the rock characteristics and the effective length of the leach cycle. The important rock characteristics include rock porosity, the degree of internal fracturing and the mode of mineral occurrence. With regard to the latter, penetration is likely to be greater if the leachable mineralization occurs on fracture surfaces or in veinlets, as opposed to fine grains uniformly disseminated throughout the rock mass. An estimate of penetration distance may be derived from column or heap tests by noting the depth of solution penetration into the larger rock fragments after three, six and 12 months of leaching. While the penetration rate is ore specific, something on the order of 10 to 20 mm/y may be appropriate for competent, primary copper (chalcopyrite) ore. For gold in tight quartz, the rate may be about the same. Copper oxide ores and gold that is hosted in a more porous rock matrix are likely to have penetration rates that are at least two to three times higher, and an even higher rate should be appropriate for uranium hosted in sandstone. As noted above, the length of the effective leach cycle is likely to be measured in years. On this basis, the ultimate penetration distance (dp) would vary from less than 50 to several 100 mm when a particular ore is leached to exhaustion. Several sets of mathematical manipulations are necessary to convert a rock size distribution and corresponding value of dp into an estimated extraction-rate curve. The first step is to break the ROM size distribution down into intervals and then calculate the radius for the mean rock size in each interval. This is shown in Table 1 for rock sizes up to 1.75 m (about 6 ft) in diameter. The next step is to calculate the volume of unleached core and the fraction of rock that is leached. This is done for the following three values of dp: 25, 100 and 250 mm. Results are shown in Table 2. The third step is to select the ultimate level of recovery that will be achieved in the fraction of material that is effectively leached, i.e., the outer zone that is penetrated by the leach solution. In designing mine workings and adequate roof supports, it is indispensable to determine properties of the strata surrounding the workings. The proper selection of roof supports is based, before everything else, on a thorough knowledge of the roof rock strength, especially tensile strength. This parameter is a vital factor in the delamination of roof rocks and eventual cave-in. It is also important to know the properties of the floor on which the roof supports are set. While driving galleries, it is essential to know beforehand the strength of rocks that will be encountered in the near future during the work. The devices described will help to obtain this information.

The Cyanide Regeneration Process (CRP) was developed by Golconda Engineering and Mining Services and installed at Golconda's Beaconsfield Gold Tailings Retreatment Project situated in Tasmania, Australia. The Tailings Project is a 1000 ton per day carbon-in-pulp treatment plant, feed for which consists of tailings material which is dredged from the Tamar River. The pulp is screened to remove debris, then cycloned to form two products. Underflow pulp is stored in a 350 ton bin and cyclone overflow passes to a thickener. The coarse pulp material is fed to the grinding circuit then rejoins the thickened slimes in the cyanide leach circuit. Gold is extracted by carbon-in-pulp techniques. The plant is sited in rolling, hilly country approximately 200 meters from the Tamar River. The residue disposal area is quite small consisting of four dams, totalling 42 acres. The regional climate is cool and wet with little evaporation; therefore, we anticipated a net increase in contained liquor, and subsequent storage problems. Our plan was to remove cyanide from the liquor prior to returning the detoxified solution to the river system. Such treatment was not required until midway through the second year of the project. Initial testwork on sample material indicated that destruction of cyanide by chlorine was the simple solution. Subsequent follow-up on actual plant liquor indicated a huge chlorine requirement due, we believe, to the substantial degradation of vegetable matter plus organic content from the marine environment. The cost of cyanide destruction could not be justified.

Jigging is a separtion process that has already been described by Agricola in 1556. Fine size material is normally treated in a hutch jigging process, in which the heavy particles are penetrating the jigging bed and are recovered in the hutch. In this process, a ragging consisting of the same or higher specific gravity particles is inserted upon the screen. The ragging is used mainly as a valve to maintain a constant upward flow of the water. Since the heavy particles should pass easily into the hutch, the ragging particles are up to ten times larger than the maximum feed size (1). In the fine size range - 1 mm the performance of jigs is mainly insufficient; some of the low density particles percolate the ragging while the hutch water flow prevents the fine heavy particles from entering the bed (2). By giving a thin layer of particles, which posesses a density sensitivity in case of certain adjustment of flow conditions, directly on the screen, the precision of separation can be increased. Stroke length and frequency have to be adjusted to give this filter layer a homogenous porosity between 60 and 70% during the pulsion phase, and the "en masse" lifting of the bed, as it is known in jigging of coarser material, has to be prevented (3). In this case, the jig cycle is only of minor influence.

Calcine is transported from the Reduction Plant at 850°C in insulated hopper cars and charged into three rectangular electric melting furnaces each equipped with three - 18.5 MVA transformers. The electrical energy is applied through six in line prebaked carbon electrodes, and slag and metal are tapped at opposite ends of the furnaces on an intermittent basis. The slag, 5000 tonnes per day, is disposed of by a pot train directly to the dump. The ferronickel, 250 tonnes per day, is tapped into 40 tonne capacity ladles in which it is refined in two ASEA-SKF ladle furnace stations. Casting is done over lip at 1520°C in a pig casting machine with stepless speed control at up to 55 tonnes per hour. The ingots are stacked into self palletizing bundles weighing about 1500 kilograms and are strapped and tagged and transported to the seaport, from which the final shipment is made to the world market. The paper describes constructional details and gives information of both normal operation and start-up and shut-down procedures. Consumption figures for refractory, electrodes, electric energy and refining additions are given and metal chemistry is given before and after refining.

The design of an auxiliary ventilation system for long underground openings (drifts, ramps and shafts), often requires the installation of multiple fans. The fans are installed in series and separated from each other by rigid ducts of fixed or variable length. However, problems relating to excessive leakage often occur, with each project representing a unique problem requiring an efficient solution. In this study, a method to determine the design parameters of an auxiliary ventilation system is presented. The method is based on the principle of partitioning a long ductwork into segments of finite length and solving the resulting networks separately. Specifically, the method is developed to solve two types of problems: constant fan spacing, and constant fan size. In the former, the fan spacing is fixed, and the problem is solved for fan sizes. In the latter, the problem is to solve for fan spacing. An example is used to illustrate the method.

Turquoise Ridge is an underground gold mine located in the Potosi Mining District, approximately 64 km northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. Turquoise Ridge Underground is accessed via two shafts and a system of internal ramps and utilizes underhand drift and fill mining methods with cemented rockfill. The mine also employs mechanical mining as well as sill benching as mining methods. Ground conditions at Turquoise Ridge Underground are poor, and the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) may be less than 20, or very poor, in ore headings. Current production rate is 2,700 tonnes of ore per day. Key challenges in increasing production levels and reducing costs are the development of sufficient stoping areas and the transition from top-cut development to undercut stoping. Completion of the infrastructure development in the North Zone is necessary to achieve and optimize higher production levels. The #3 Shaft project is well underway and is expected to be commissioned in mid. 2022. The shaft will drastically decrease the haulage requirements in the North Zone

Based on the rules of strata behavior and the characteristics of rock movement, the elementary problems of using fully mechanized coal mining techniques in steeply dipping coal seams are described. A model of the "surrounding-support-rock" relationship is made. The support systems stability during fully mechanized mining of steeply dipping coal seams is studied. Then, a practical engineering example of the fully mechanized mining of a steeply dipping seam is presented. The seam used in the example is in the Lushuidong colliery, which is administrated by Huaying Mining Bureau, Sichuan Province.

Due to the influence of economic development on the demand growth of coal resources, many mines in China have gradually entered deep mining. When the roof of deep coal seam is hard rock, it is easy to cause strong ground pressure with the advance of the working face, which seriously threatens the safety of coal mining. Taking 31,104 working face of a mine as the engineering background, this paper studies and compares the deformation characteristics and stress transfer evolution law before and after the presplitting of the hard roof through the combination of physical similarity simulation, numerical calculation, and field measurement, based on the analysis of the interaction relationship between the breaking and collapse of the composite hard roof, and verifies the treatment effect of hydraulic presplitting through field measurement. The results show that: (1) In the early stage of mining under the composite hard roof, the lower roof is mainly subjected to tensile failure, the voussoir beam structure formed is relatively unstable, and the stope is prone to impact. When the mining distance of the working face is large, the breaking rotation of the upper hard roof voussoir beam causes pressure damage to the lower hard roof, causing the lower hard roof voussoir beam structure to slide and lose stability, resulting in strong ground pressure in the working face. (2) After presplitting of composite hard rock stratum, in the early stage of mining, the range and degree of rock stratum damaged by presplitting are small except for the hard rock stratum itself, and the presplitting effect is not significant. When mining to the first square position, the roof is damaged in advance by presplitting, the overall plastic damage range increases, the damage form area increases, and the damage degree deepens. The vertical displacement of the composite hard roof increases rapidly, and the presplitting effect is remarkable. (3) The evolution characteristics of roof principal stress transfer show that under the dual effects of mining and presplitting, the roof tensile stress area above the goaf is large, the rock failure horizon rises, and the roof failure height is high and the failure degree is deep. The stress concentration degree of the coal mass in front of the goaf is reduced, and the stress concentration range is transferred to the rock mass in front. With the advance of mining, the hard roof in front can break and caving in time, so as to avoid rock burst disaster caused by large suspended roof area. The field ground pressure monitoring shows that the average periodic weighting interval, weighting range, peak value before weighting, and peak value during weighting of the working face after presplitting decrease by 53.5%, 38.03%, 8.63%, and 5.96%, respectively, which effectively reduces the weighting intensity and ensures the safe and efficient mining of the working face.

The nature of industry structure is examined and the structure of the aluminum, copper, lead and zinc industries are described by the use of factor analysis. Capacity is defined and the relationship between industry structure and capacity utilization is examined. It is demonstrated that excess capacity is possible in industries with competitive or monopolistic characteristics, but the effects of the overcapacity are vastly different in the two cases. In a competitive industry, cycles of overcapacity with attendant fluctuating prices are expected. A change in industry structure from monopolistic to competitive characteristics over time causes profits and economic rents to be transferred from the producer to consumers of the mineral.

INTRODUCTION Optimization, as measured by productivity gains, is being achieved in our nation's preparation plants principally by automation, economy of scale, and reducing maintenance. Increased tonnage per unit of investment, a1 so a measure of optimization, is being achieved by breaking with tradition and increasing plant utilization, while simultaneously improving on equipment re1iabi1ity. Improved qua1ity, another measure of optimization, is being attained through technical innovation. This review will concentrate on state-of-the- art unit operations and processes, and will not discuss emerging new technologies which are covered in detail in other presentations of this symposium. It is recognized that much of what will be discussed in this paper is not unique to the fine coal circuit, but is equally applicable to the entire preparation plant. However, the areas reviewed are the principal means being used today to optimize an existing preparation plant's fine coal circuit. Prior to designing and optimizing a fine coal cleaning circuit, the question that must first be answered is, "Do we even want a fine coal circuit? This is a much more complex question than is readily apparent, as most of you recognize. It can be argued either way. In the final analysis the "bottom line" will hold (Blackmore, 1982). If your sales contract a1 lows it, and the selling price can justify it, you most assuredly want to build a fine coal circuit into your preparation plant. In general today, most new preparation plants do have fine coal cleaning circuits. The purpose of fine coal cleaning has changed with time. Some of the early applications of fine coal cleaning were to prevent stream pollution rather than to prepare a product for market (Merrill a Pennington, 1962). During the 50's, 60's and into the 70's the principal thrust of fine coal cleaning was in metallurgical coal preparation. More recently, the emphasis of the 80's is on steam coal processing. There is no consensus on what is fine coal. Traditionally, fine coal would be anything below 1/4" in size. Because of the advances being made in intermediate coal cleaning processes, i.e. heavy media cyclones and jig cleaning, this discussion will define fine coal as -28 mesh (Aplan, 1987). Figure 1 is a plot of the size ranges of a large number of U.S. bituminous coals. In general the -28 mesh fraction of a bituminous coal will be between 7% and 18% of the ROM feed with reported ranges of 5% to 40% (Aplan, 1987). Consequently, traditional fine coal cleaning is general 1 y involved with a re1 actively mi nor portion of the coal feed. Every effort is taken both in terms of mining and preparation to keep it that way because of the high cost of cleaning fines. The move away from this posture, namely, the techniques to fine grind coal to liberate pyrite is probably the biggest challenge facing fine coal processing today.

Most magnesia (MgO), whether of natural or synthetic origin, is used in the dead-burned or periclase form as refractory linings for the production of steel. Continued research in refractory science, combined with good refractory maintenance and improvements in steel-making processes, have resulted in decreased use of magnesia. To make up for this loss of business, producers of synthetic magnesia have started to manufacture a variety of magnesium-based chemicals that are used in many industries. There are three primary methods of producing MgO. The first involves the calcination of naturally occurring minerals species. Most of the magnesia produced by this method uses the rhombohedra1 carbonate mineral magnesite, MgCO,. To a lesser extent, the mineral brucite, Mg(OH), is calcined to magnesia. Magnesia produced by the calcination of minerals is called natural magnesia. The second production method uses magnesium-rich brines, or sea water reacting with lime or calcined dolomite to produce magnesium hydroxide. The magnesium hydroxide is subsequently calcined to magnesia. Material produced in this way is called synthetic magnesia. The third major method of production uses saline lake brines to produce magnesium chloride. Magnesium chloride brine is sprayed into a reactor where it thermally decomposes into MgO and HCl. The magnesia is purified by slaking to magnesium hydroxide followed by calcination. Magnesia produced in this manner is also know as synthetic magnesia (Duncan and McKracken, 1994). The degree to which the magnesium minerals or the synthetically prepared magnesium hydroxide is calcined governs the physical properties of the resulting MgO. It is the physical properties that dictate the end use for the product. The terms used to describe magnesia vary along with the degree of calcination. Table 1 summarizes the terminology used when discussing the various forms of magnesium oxide.

More than 95 percent of the barite mined today is used by the petroleum industry as driller’s mud. The rest is used in the industrial market and the medical field. Most of the barite mined in the United States is in Nevada. This year, mining activity has increased due to an increase in oil exploration/development. This was caused by an increase in the crude oil prices.

Potash is an important natural mineral used largely as a fertilizer in the production of food and fiber. About 93 percent of all potash consumed globally is used in agriculture as fertilizer. The balance is used to manufacture potassium chemicals. Most potash is extracted by conventional underground mining methods. Solution mining is used when underground deposits are irregular and very deep. The other main production method involves the evaporation of brines in shallow salt lakes, followed by the harvesting of potassium minerals.

Nowadays there is a greater need for detailed reservoir modelling in the oil industry. It is generally recognized that nearly all reservoirs are heterogeneous and idealization of rock characteristics in flow calculations is unrealistic regarding actual physical and textural conditions encountered in geologic formations. The heterogeneity of oil reservoirs considerably influences the distribution of fluids, as well as their displacement. It would be advantageous if a reservoir petroleum engineer was able to construct a precise mathematical model of the detailed reservoir rock variability characterizing the degree of reservoir heterogeneity in an unambiguous way. This paper presents a geomathematical model describing the spatial behaviour and distribution of the principal reservoir properties. The model is based on the Theory of Regionalised Variables and the Kriging technique. The model is performed by a set of computing programs and is tested on an Abu Dhabi oil reservoir in United Arab Emirates.

A mathematical model of a shaking table is being developed, for inclusion in a package for the simulation of gravity concentration. The general form of the modules and how they fit into the package is briefly described. The separation on a shaking table is controlled by a number of operating variables and the importance of these variables in the model development is discussed. The influence of wash water, feed pulp density, deck slope, deck amplitude and mass feed rate are reported. The form of the model is described being based on the probability of a particle of defined size and density reporting to a specific discharge site. The mathematical relationships which relate size and density distributions to variations in the operating parameters are presented. The use of these functions in the prediction of the performance of a shaking table is outlined.

Once considered the dowdy country cousins of the glamorous metallics, industrial minerals are shedding their old image. They are neither common nor easy and their time has come in an age of increasing specialization. Consider that of the 45 or so industrial minerals and rocks listed in [Table 1], almost three-quarters have ten or fewer significant suppliers (i.e., those individual countries contributing 2% or more of total world production); in more than half the cases, 85% of world production is accounted for by only five countries or fewer. Curiously, even materials that appear to be virtually ubiquitous like crushed rock and common salt have significant production vacuums. For example, there is a severe lack of sound aggregates along the US Gulf Coast and common salt production on a large scale is virtually absent in central Africa. These examples all underline the obvious, but acute truism that "The single most important fact about mineral resources is that they are not distributed equally over the world" (Flawn, 1966). Just as significant today is that human resources are not distributed equally over the world, and so arise some interesting commercial incongruities. In certain regions raw materials are plentiful but consumers are not, and without a market a mineral deposit is merely a geological curiosity. Elsewhere, there may be a market but no local raw material supply. For example, despite a huge market there is no or virtually no commercial production of chromite, diamonds, and manganese in the United States and Canada, nor phosphate rock, diamonds, rutile, and zirconium minerals in western Europe. In contrast, Australia with its small domestic market is the world's largest supplier of bauxite, diamonds, ilmenite, natural and synthetic rutile, and zircon; the same is true for South Africa which is a leading producer of chromite, manganese, diamonds, andalusite, ilmenite, rutile, and zircon (Table 2). In the commercial world, Nature's uneven distribution is counterbalanced by deep sea international trade.

Sublevel stoping generally is a large-scale open stoping method. It sometimes is referred to as long-hole or blasthole stoping. This method usually is applied to strong ore bodies that require minimal support and are surrounded by strong country rock. The ore body should be fairly regular in shape and well-defined. The dip of the footwall normally should be sufficient to allow broken ore to gravitate freely, although the method has been adapted successfully to mine some of the flatter ore bodies. Sublevel stoping is not dependent on the width of the ore body. Widths of less than 6 m (20 ft), however, make the utilization of long-hole drilling techniques more difficult. The main criteria for sublevel open stoping are competent ore and stable host rock, regular ore boundaries, and a footwall dip that exceeds the angle of repose of broken ore. Basically, the method entails providing access to the ore body at various subintervals between the main haul- age levels in order to drill and blast the intervening ore. Stope drilling is carried out from drilling drifts on the sublevels, and the ore is blasted in slices towards an open face, which generally is vertical on the downholes and may be inclined towards the open face for the up holes. The blasted ore gravitates to the bottom of the stope and is collqcted through drawpoints. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical sublevel stoping mine. The method requires extensive ore body development with relatively high capital expenditures. How- ever, much of the development is in ore, and production costs are comparatively low. Productivity rates are in the 13.6 to 27.2 t (15 to 30 st)/manshift range. The drilling, blasting, and loading operations are performed independently, and equipment utilization is high. Large outputs can be obtained with few units and limited personnel. Dilution with waste rock may occur if ore boundaries are irregular or if caving occurs, but 100% of the ore within the stope usually is recovered. Pillar recovery sometimes is a problem. It is at this point that most of the waste dilution occurs. At the time data was gathered for this report (1973), the sublevel open stoping method was used by more than 21% of the metallic ore mines in the US (9 out of 42 mines producing 1088 + t/day (1200 + stpd) and provided more than 12% of the total metallic ore production from these mines. DEVELOPMENT Access to a sublevel open stope mine is gained by a slope or shaft that is normally sunk in the footwall of the ore zone, away from any possible effects from blasting or other production operations in the stoping process. Main level interval is selected and usually varies from 45.7 to 121.9 m (150 to 400 ft), depending on the vertical extent of the ore body, the number of drawpoints required to maintain output, and the eventual stope height. The main haulage drifts are located at the bottom of the stope horizon, either directly in ore or in the footwall, with access crosscuts at intervals. Raises are driven up through the ore to connect to the level above and provide access and ventilation to the sublevel drilling drifts, which are driven horizontally in the ore for the length of the stope. Depending on the drawpoint system to be used, the stope is either undercut by a raise-and-cone system, from a scram or slusher drift, or simply provided with a drilling drift from which access is made at intervals to the main haulage level. A raise driven either at the end or in the middle of the stope (if stope access is from both ends) provides a start for opening up a vertical slot across the stope to establish a free or open face for long-hole drilling and blasting. Sublevel stoping has proved to be a relatively safe and economical system.

Traditional or artisanal goldmining, also known as small scale goldmining, has a strong and probably a negative environmental impact. The processing methods applied are very frequently a source of severe pollution due to the emissions of mercury by the extraction of gold by means of amalgamation as well as the emissions of cyanide through cyanide leaching of gold bearing ores. The emissions find their way into the environment and contaminate soils, sediments, water and atmosphere. Abnormal concentrations of mercury and cyanides in waterways are known to occur year after year destroying irreplaceable regions of the world. Mercury and cyanide compounds are highly toxic and may directly create permanent damage to the whole ecosystem. Existing methods for recycling of mercury and for decontamination of mercury and cyanide contaminated tailings are not customary applied in small scale mining and are ineffective as well. Based on investigations of traditional and small size goldmining, this paper presents: -processing methods of gold and discarded tailings under consideration of environmental protection; -figures on actual situation; -recommendations for equipment; -some decontamination methods for mercury and residual cyanide. Mineral Processing methods in traditional gold mining Gold is usually existing in its ores as the metal alloyed with metallic silver and perhaps copper. The element may occur in the form of: -native gold -inclusions also of microns or submicroscopic size metal sulfides (auriferous) such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, stibnite, arsenopyrite and galena -combined as telluride or sulphotelluride. The separation process selected depends on whether the gold can be freed from its unfavorable associations (e.g. gangue) at a sufficiently coarse grain-size, or whether it is carried in a heavy sulfide which can be freed similarly. The usual practice is to concentrate the goldbearing mineral at a relatively coarse grain-size and to regrind the ore if necessary. The gold content is concentrated by secondary or tertiary gravital methods or is extracted by chemical methods (amalgamation, cyanidation etc.) Gold, even when of fine grain-size, settle readily due to its high specific gravity from pulps in which the main gangue mineral is quartz or silicates. Amalgamation is the process of separating gold and silver from their associated minerals by binding (entrapping) them into a mixture with mercury. The cyanide process is applied to separate gold or gold-bearing compounds by dissolution from the finely ground ore (CIP, CIL, RIP), or as heap leaching. The dissolved gold is separated from the solids and the metal-rich or pregnant solution is then treated to recover its gold. Gold is also recovered by flotation methods. This process is widely used in treating base metal ores and in separating various sulfide components of ores, as well as in removing the barren gangue. The gold usually associates with a specific product in a sequence of flotation operations and is recovered subsequently in the smelting of the sulfide concentrates and refining of the metallic products, or by cyanidation of the roasted concentrates. Froth-flotation can be applied to separate gold and sulfide minerals from a finely ground pulp. The Amalgamation Process Amalgamation is the main method for the recovery of gold in traditional mining and is applied for the extraction of gold from placers as well as primary ores. The mineral technology used depends on the nature of ore deposits. In winning gold from solid ore, the matrix of minerals and rocks must be crushed and ground to sufficient fineness to liberate the gold. The liberated gold could be treated similar as free gold from placers. Gold is mainly separated from the valueless gangue (barren rock) by utilizing the difference between the density of the impure native metal (density about 16-19) and the gangue (density about 2.5). In simple operations the material is carried by a stream of water down a sluice generally equipped with small transverse barriers (riffles) against which the gold collects. The riffled sluice is the principal device used by artisanal gold miners. Nowadays, spirals as well as centrifuges, such as Knelson separator or Falcon separator, are occasionally applied for gold recovery. Gold may also be recovered from the pulp, by passing it over corduroycovered tables that catch the heavier particles - a method maybe as ancient as gold mining itself. In Switzerland two major railway systems as shown below in Figure 1 has recently been completed or is under construction: ¦Lötschberg, south of Bern which was commissioned in 2007 ¦Gotthard, south of Zurich which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2016The aim is to increase the transport capacity of the railway system and to transfer more transport of goods to the railway by offering transport of trailers and lorries on the new railway systems. It will have a positive environmental impact but also improve the congested traffic situation of the highways in north-south directionThe Gotthard tunnel is totally 57 km (35 mile) long and the Lötschberg tunnel is 35 km (22 mile) long. Both tunnel systems consist of two parallel single track tunnels connected with cross tunnels at every 333 m (1 093 ft). Additionally there are cross-over tunnels and caverns for installations and operation. In the Lötschberg tunnel, the majority of the excavation has been by Drill & Blast and in Gotthard tunnel the major part is being excavated by TBM.
