Laboratory test work, pilot plant testing and plant experience with wet, fine-mesh screens are discussed. High-frequency, low-amplitude, fine-mesh, wet screens were installed on the 6th cleaner concentrate stream. These screens produce a 60% oversize recovery split of the molybdenite concentrate that is of leached equivalent quality. The undersize stream is leached with hot ferric chloride to remove lead and copper contaminants before roasting or shipment to sulfide customers. This plant modification is a good example of using existing technology in an unconventional flow sheet to yield significant cost savings.

CLAYS CONTAIN the mineral kaolinite, a hydrated aluminum silicate. It is an important potential raw material for aluminum, especially for those countries possessing no bauxite deposits. Therefore, there is no surprise to find a large volume of research done for the recovery of aluminum from clays. Kaolinite (Al203?2 SiO2?H20) contains 39.8% A1203; 46.3 % SiO2, and 12.9 % H2O. The analysis of a good-quality dried clay of an Eastern Canadian siliceous shale is shown in Table 8-1.

Using theory of network planning together with graph theory, an algorithm is presented that creates canonical diagrams for mine ventilation networks (M VN). The data generated by the algorithm is used in the construction and plotting phases of a program that automatically plots the canonical diagrams, which can then be used for further studies of a given MVN.

An unusually pure grade of rutile and several grades of aplite rock are produced in a unique mining and mineral dressing operation in Hanover County, Virginia. The ore body is an aplite rock of gnessic structure, having a sari ace exposure extending over several hundred acres, heavily leathered and containing rutile, ilmenite, and other titanium and iron minerals. The physical nature and mineral composition of the ore body has permitted the use of a relatively economical and unusual processing circuit. The flowsheet was designed to take full advantage of the remarkable liberation of the minerals at relatively coarse rinds. It permits flexibility in changing the product mix, and maintains high levels of purity in both rutile and aplite rack. The mineral processing is discussed in some detail below.

The ultimate objective of mine design is to determine the development and untilization of mining resources. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and automated mapping are becoming very popular in engineering and in mining. Any computer program which produces a design or model with the interaction of an engineer can be considered computer-aided design (CAD), but' the term CAD is often associated with interactive graphic design and mapping capabilities. Graphics can be effectively used to describe and model two-or-three dimensional mine workings, orebodies, and geologic structures. Interactive computer graphics is applied to mine design with a combination of deposit modeling techniques and the use of AutoCAD for interactive graphics and mapping. The combined system can perform a large part of the calculations and drafting work for geologic and mining design. Using computer calculation and graphics techniques, comparisons of alternatives, can be made quickly.

Marino Engineering Associates, Inc. (MEA) was asked to determine the effects of mining beneath a proposed roadway structure. In order to determine the subsidence potential and the magnitude of the mine stabilization costs it is important to know whether underground mining is present, and if so, to what a real extent. The site investigated had the potential to have mining in three different coal seams. To determine where mining was present MEAÕs borehole radar system was used. In summary, the borehole radar subsurface investigation validated that the available mine map in the most shallow coal seam was fairly accurate despite its age (1888), found no mining in the underlying coal seam and detected an area of unknown mining at a depth of about 300 ft in the lowest coal seam which was verified by subsequent drilling.

The process of selecting a building site for a major structure is a complex procedure involving the consideration of a multitude of factors. The approximate geographic location for a structure is usually fixed by its intended function, though often there may be several site alternatives. Socio-economic, logistic, marketing and political factors are the primary site determinants. Also critical in site planning, however, are the environmental factors, both natural and man-made. These factors will influence the precise siting location within the limits allowed by the primary determinants and will dictate some of the basic design criteria. This paper discusses environmental factors, principally those which are natural conditions, that must be analyzed for five different groups of structures. The importance of thorough site environmental analysis based upon the principles of applied earth science is described. Significant elements to be considered in an appraisal of the geology, hydrology, seismology and meteorology are outlined.

This paper is motivated by the belief that increasing drilling and blasting costs will not necessarily bring about better digging or crushing productivity. As a matter of fact it can be counter productive as the ensuing discussion will show. In the two case studies presented herein when powder factor increased, productivity at a rope shovel and at a primary crusher decreased. Experience has shown that equipment (shovel and primary crusher) productivity increases as the powder factor increases and concurrently operating costs decrease. This is illustrated by Figure 1where the graph shows (assuming drilling costs constant) that for increases in powder factor initially operating costs might fall till a certain point and then they start to go up again. By the same token we need to understand what is the behavior of the operation’s productivity. It seems intuitive productivity goes up for increases in powder factor but when an operation reaches the point of minimum operating cost one could say that productivity reached its maximum. For continuing increases in powder factor can productivity still go up or does it go down? This paper presents two examples where the productivities of a surface coal mine and of a quarry are reduced for increases in powder factor. This indicates that these two operations could be operating to the right of their minimum operating costs and maximum productivity and therefore wasting precious drilling and blasting dollars and resources. Moreover, their productivity is following the red dotted line in Figure 1 and the question becomes can they follow the blue dotted line for increased drilling and blasting costs? The industry owes to itself to determine this minimum operating cost point and what can be done in case that the productivity goes down afterwards despite an increase in drilling and blasting costs. In other words, utilize your drilling and blasting resources correctly. In the two examples that follow single explosive loading strategies make powder factor a valid means of comparing the results of productivity as a function of powder factor. Also, external factors such as equipment operator influence are eliminated due to the long time span considered in the analysis

Low-rank/oxidized coals respond poorly to oil agglomeration. Emulsification of kerosene in the presence of surfactants dramatically reduces the size of the kerosene droplets. While this dramatically reduces the amount of oil that is required for efficient agglomeration (down to 0.25-0.5%), more importantly, the surfactants entirely change the electrokinetic properties of the oil droplets and thus the interaction between oil droplets and coal particles. Consequently, kerosene cationic emulsions can efficiently agglomerate oxidized coal particles. The agglomerates obtained in such a process can still be recovered by screening. Surfactants can affect fine coal filtration very profoundly when used to emulsify the oil which is utilized to agglomerate coal prior to its filtration. This sequence is much more logical than the use of flocculants - highly hydrophilic polymers - as filtration additives to aid dewatering of flotation concentrates. Although such polymers flocculate coal particles, they also render coal surfaces hydrophilic and make reduction of the cake moisture content difficult.

The question is posed as to why columns typically have a collection zone 10 m high (H) by 1 m in diameter (D). Three geometry dependent factors are considered: degree of mixing, Np; volumetric bias rate, B; and volumetric gas rate, G. Increasing H:D decreased Np and B, which improves performance but decreases G, which causes the column to approach overloading. Taking typical column operating conditions, it is concluded that a collection zone H:D of 10:l is a reasonable compromise.

A description is given of an experimental ventilation control system designed, built, and tested by WVU under United States Bureau of Mines sponsorship. A description is given of the control, system used and the mine-wide microcomputer-based ventilation monitoring system used with it. Test results of experiments conducted with this system at Eastern Associated Coal Corporation's Federal No. 2 underground coal mine are presented. In addition, a brief description is given of a new microprocessor based system presently being tested.

We have studied the possibility to use electrical phenomena in order to selectively separate minerals with various densities and dielectric constants in non-homogeneous electric fields. This technique is based on levitation forces acting on a solid particle immersed in dielectric fluid. When the gradient of the electric field is directed downwards, the levitation force in the dielectric fluid (pure liquid or electric colloids) will be in an upward direction to float sinking minerals by counterbalancing their density mismatch with the liquid medium. The separation process can be made by using two possible modes: either by direct application of electrical forces or by change in the density and dielectric constant of a liquid medium in which the mineral particles are placed. We have investigated several electrode configurations in order to produce electrical fields which are strongly non homogeneous. Further more, investigation on the dielectric properties of liquids have been performed.

Up to now, the hands-on approach to construction has been stressed. This chapter reviews the basic tools available for construction design and monitoring of a construction project. It is divided into three discussions, all under the general title of computer aids, since the trend for using these tools-is via the computer. In the context of our discussions, the focus for computer aids will be on the use of evaluation and analysis techniques for coal mine construction applications, including mainframe programs, CPM techniques, as well as mini and microcomputer applications. Although the presentation of material in this chapter may be detailed at times, by no means does it cover the entire field of computer applications for design or project scheduling and monitoring. It is only an attempt to illustrate the possibilities that are available to construction and mine engineers. Interested persons can pursue computer applications for coal mining by reviewing Computer Methods for the 80's. by Alfred Weiss, editor, published by SME-AIME.

Experiments conducted with a 75-mm-diem hydroryclone have shown it is possible to obtain an iron ore concentrate containing 60% Fe. 2.65% SiO2, and 4.0% Al2O3 from Barsua iron-ore washing-plant slimes. About 60% of the iron values are recovered from slimes containing approximately 49% Fe, 8.9% A1203 and 11% SiO2. The obtained products can be used in the sinter feed for iron and steel making. The key to achieving process success lies in establishing the correct cut point (d50) of the hydrocyclone through the manipulation of operating and design variables, such as spigot and vortex finder diameter, solids concentration and operating pressure. The cyclone efficiency is represented by the partition curve. The cyclone performance, evaluated mathematically from the reduced efficiency curve, is represented by the equation Y = 100[1 -exp(-axb)], where: •X = did 50, •Y = corrected of efficiency (%) and •a and b are constants.

This paper focuses on the noise exposure levels of miners employed on longwall production faces. Along with the increased production from longwall units has come the potential for greater noise exposures. Typical noise levels are given for the various noise sources that are present on modern longwall faces. Exposure times have typically increased since the introduction of longwall technology in this country. Representative exposure times and patterns are analyzed. Possible solutions are presented for generalized cases. Engineering controls developed by the Bureau of Mines are explained and their potential effectiveness is calculated for the cases presented. The role of hearing protectors in an overall hearing conservation program is also investigated. Recent research performed by the Bureau suggests that the actual performance level of muff -type protectors may be less than the manufacturers ratings under certain circumstances. The use of muff- type protectors is discussed and analyzed with respect to their use on longwall operations.

Production scheduling of an open-pit mine is one of the most important steps in open-pit mining. The mine's production schedule defines the distribution of cash flows and, as a result, directly influences the net present value (NPV) and overall economic feasibility of a project. The need to plan and operate a mine with an optimum production schedule has been obvious for some time, but the methods used to obtain such a schedule have not been so obvious. The current practice is to do a trial and error analysis by hand. In an attempt to improve the way production scheduling is currently done, a new computer based production scheduling algorithm was developed. This paper describes the fundamentals of this newly developed heuristic scheduling algorithm and its application to a gold deposit. The results of this case study show that the schedules, based on the new method, provide improved cash flows compared to production schedules done manually.

Successful ground control is an essential part of all viable underground mining operations. To a large extent ground conditions influence the choice of mining methods, percentage and cost of extraction, and often the degree of safety that can be achieved. Utilizing the computer for ground-control planning offers great potential under many diverse conditions as not only are computations facilitated, but also details of the often complex geologic and structural framework of the mine can be readily stored and retrieved. Two basic approaches have been developed for applying the computer in solving ground-control problems. The first uses an analytical method, such as the finite element technique, for solving a specific problem. The second is more general and involves storage of geologic data and application of general design equations. The latter has found wide application in stratified deposits. It is the purpose of this chapter to describe both approaches as they are used for improving the ground-control aspects of mine planning.

INTRODUCTION One of the most important tasks facing the opera¬tors of deep-level gold mines is supporting the roof strata in the immediate vicinity of the stope faces. Some of the deeper gold mines operate at depths ex¬ceeding 3.0 km; the extreme mining depths and the tabular nature of the gold-bearing reefs result in high stress concentrations at the abutments of the stope faces. These, in turn, lead to extensive fracturing of even the hardest quartzites. Although most of these fractures develop in a stable manner, there have been many instances where rock failure occurred suddenly, resulting in a considerable amount of damage to the underground workings. Such violent rock failures commonly are known as "rock bursts," and they are typical of many hard-rock mines that are operating at great depths. To safeguard mining personnel and equipment against the effects of stable and unstable rock failures, adequate support must be provided to the fractured roof as quickly and as effec¬tively as possible. Traditionally, timber props and timber packs have been utilized to provide roof support in gold mine stopes up to 1.5 m wide. Both methods of support suffer from the fundamental disadvantage of generating sup¬port only in reaction to movement of the strata. Since unrestrained strata movement often results in a break¬down of the frictional forces that preserve the stability of the intensely fractured roof strata, it is essential that stope supports have rapid load-bearing characteristics. An equally important requirement is that the roof sup¬ports be able to accommodate displacements of the rock mass. A third requirement of roof supports in gold mine stopes is that they must be able to accommodate the high rates of stope convergence typical of rock bursts. The hydraulic prop is the obvious choice for sup¬porting the stope faces in deep-level hard-rock mines. Since hydraulic props can be installed with a positive setting load, they can provide roof support that is independent of strata movement. By equipping the hydraulic props with yield valves, they meet the require¬ment of being able to accommodate rock-mass displace¬ments. However, the requirement of being able to accommodate high rates of stope convergence without overloading or damaging the rock strata was rather difficult to meet. The first introduction of hydraulic roof supports into gold mine stopes showed that conventional hy¬draulic props, such as those used in coal mines, were completely unsuitable for a number of reasons, in¬cluding: 1) Since drilling and blasting are used to break the ore in gold mine stopes, supports installed close enough to be effective are exposed to the vigor of the blast. Conventional coal-mining props suffered extensive blast damage, despite being protected by a blast barricade. 2) The environmental conditions in gold mine stopes favor corrosion. The high quartz content and the abrasiveness of the ore further aggravate the problem by damaging the protective coatings on the hydraulic surfaces. Simply changing the design of gold mine props to have the piston project from the bottom rather than from the top resulted in dramatic improvements in the service life of the props. The improvement was attributable to external water in the stope washing the fine quartz grit away from the hydraulic surfaces, rather than concentrating the particles between the cylinder and piston of the prop. 3) The most obvious deficiency of conventional coal mining props was their inability to yield rapidly enough to accommodate the high convergence rates of rock bursts without overloading the supports. As a result of the first disappointing results with hydraulic supports in narrow hard-rock stopes mined by drilling and blasting, a comprehensive research and development program was undertaken. The hydraulic props resulting from several years of research and exten¬sive field trials are described herein. To date (1978), more than 130,000 of these props have been manufac¬tured and used successfully in a number of mines and under a variety of geological conditions. Although many of the detailed specifications are directed spe¬cifically to gold mining conditions, there are a number of points that are of general importance in the design of underground support systems for tabular excavations in hard-rock mines of any type. SPECIFICATIONS FOR RAPID-YIELDING PROPS Yield Requirements The yield requirements for hydraulic props in deep¬level hard-rock gold mines are summarized in the fol¬lowing paragraphs. Slow Yield Load: The design of the yield valve must allow the yield load to be preset to between 300 and 400 kN. This flexibility is necessary to account for the differences in the strength properties of the roof and floor strata. Drop in Load Under Slow Yield: The drop in sup¬port load during a slow yield should be as small as possible, but it should not exceed 5% of the slow-yield load. Rapid-Yield Load: The load exerted by the prop during periods of rapid stope convergence should be as close as possible to the slow-yield load. The rapid-yield load should not exceed the slow-yield load by more than 15% at yield rates of 1.0 m/s. The limitation of the upper valve of the yield load is important; it deter¬mines the hydraulic performance of the yield valve. The hydraulic props that satisfy this criterion have performed well, even under severe rock bursts. Load Changes Under Rapid Load: On some of the earlier rapid-yielding props, conditions of dynamic in¬stability were observed; these conditions resulted in a complete breakdown of support resistance. It is essen¬tial that the force oscillations during rapid yielding be as small as possible, not exceeding -*5% of the average rapid-yield load at a yield rate of 1.0 m/s. INTRODUCTION A current need of the phosphate industry is the development of process technology for treatment of high carbonate content ore. About 75 to 80 percent of the world phosphate reserves (1) are associated with carbonate gangue, which is not amenable to treatment by the existing techniques. Numerous laboratory and pilot plant studies have been devoted to carbonate-phosphate separation. Different techniques were involved (washing, sieving, attrition, flotation, calcination, and leaching). For technical and economical considerations, flotation appears to be an efficient process for this problem. Separation of carbonates (calcite and dolomite) from igneous phosphate is applied in industrial plants in Brazil, Finland, and South Africa. But, for sedimentary phosphate, no industrial realization exists at this time, with the possible exception of some plants in China. The main problems with sedimentary phosphates are: • high substitution by CO3-2 and F- for P04 -3 in the apatite lattice. • larger surface area of the phosphate particles because their surface is porous and irregular. • tendency of sedimentary minerals to produce more slimes in conditioning than the crystalline minerals, hence, larger dosages of collectors are required for sedimentary minerals. Investigations reported in the literature indicate that most processes developed for sedimentary carbonate-phosphate separation involved inverse flotation of carbonates using fatty acids as collectors (2), (3) associated with phosphoric acid (4), monosodium phosphate (5), F- (6), or SiF6 -2 (7) as phosphate depressants. Later investigations, conducted by A. Henchiri and G. Baudet (8), (9), (10), (11), (12), (13) in the BRGM technology department, of phosphoric esters revealed that these reagents are selective collectors for carbonate-phosphate separation. The above investigators developed a process which used phosphoric esters to collect carbonate minerals and sulfuric acid or sodium fluorosilicate as depressants for phosphate. Extensive comparative tests for different processes on the same phosphate sample show that the process developed at BRGM is one of the most promising methods proposed for sedimentary phosphate-carbonate separation. It should be pointed out, however, that phosphoric esters make abundant froths. The handling of these excessive froths will be a problem in an industrial-scale plant. This paper outlines test work performed in order to optimize and to improve the efficiency of the flotation process on a sedimentary phosphate ore selected from the Sra Ouertane orebody. The Sra Ouertane flotation process, illustrated on Figure 1, first removes carbonate minerals by inverse flotation and then recovers phosphate as a froth product, leaving quartz as a cell product.

The solvent extraction of gold cyanide from alkaline cyanide solutions with monosubstituted guanidines, bis disubstituted guanidines and a tetrasubstituted guanidine was investigated. The guanidine functional group is protonated in alkaline solution and the guanidinium cation is stabilized so that the aurocyanide anion can be extracted even at -pH 12 if an appropriate carrier is used. Typical aprotic carriers including both aliphatic and aromatic solvents limit gold extraction by guanidines to pH 10; whereas the presence of an alcohol extends gold extraction to pH 12. UV spectroscopy suggests that the alcohol facilitates protonation of the guanidines, stabilizes the guanidinium cation, and facilitates gold extraction at high pH.
