INTRODUCTION The Newtown Creek Pollution Control Project (P.W. 53) is a major system of facilities designed to collect wastewater from large areas of the Boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, then channel it to a treatment plant where the wastewater is processed and discharged. The North Branch interceptor collects wastewater along the east side of Manhattan and transports it downstream to a Junction Chamber at Avenue "D" near East 13th Street. The South Branch interceptor similarly collects wastewater from the southern part of Manhattan Island on both east and west sides of Manhattan and transports it to the same Junction Chamber from where both flows are delivered to the adjacent Manhattan Pumping Station which pumps the wastewater under the East River to a treatment plant in Brooklyn. This system is shown in Figure 1. Construction of the Manhattan Pumping Station began in the Summer of 1966 and was delayed by a number of mishaps. In the vicinity of the North and South Interceptors, approximately 3,060 cubic meters (4,000 cubic yards) of soil flowed into the excavation: 765 cubic meters (1,000 cubic yards) at the North Branch Interceptor, and approximately 2,300 cubic meters (3,000 cubic yards) at the South Interceptor. These movements were accompanied by surface subsidence, collapse, or both. On June 4, 1973, while pumping station construction was underway, approximately five to seven cubic yards of sand entered the junction chamber through a temporary bulkhead valve in the North Branch Interceptor.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers mounted in suspension components can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a Global Positioning System is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, then the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck.

A revised and expanded edition of a previous paper** dealing with reactions of calcium and magnesium oxides and hydroxides with pulverized coal fly ash is presented. Lime-fly ash specimens were cured at constant temperature and subjected to X-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, pozzolanic reactivity tests, and microscopical investigations. Bars of limefly ash were subjected to cycles of wetting and drying, and measurements of length change were recorded. A discussion of variations within and among types of lime and types of fly ash is presented. The nature of the pozzolanic reaction is reviewed, particularly as related to compounds which are used up and formed during the aging process. The relationship between the pozzolanic reaction and the resultant physical properties of the mixtures is examined.

An application of geostatistics to financial decision analysis is the linking of reserve parameters estimation precisions to a mine economics computer program calculating profitability. The estimates of economic reserve parameters are obtained by the kriging method, while precision are calculated by a technique more akin to the polygon method. To indicate the effect of the variables probability distribution on a distribution of profitability, their values are sampled by a Monte Carlo technique and entered into a mine economics modelling program developed by T. R. Ellis. The distribution of profitability calculations are in essence, a superior method of sensitivity analysis. The method is applied to a roll-front uranium deposit in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming.

This paper describes the application of a cyclonic flotation column (CFC) for coal cleaning. A CFC makes use of centrifugal force to create a density gradient in a column to augment the froth flotation process. In a CFC, a series of angular helical inserts is attached to the wall of a conventional column, and coal slurry is mixed with a series of impellers attached to a central shaft. The hydrophobic froth concentrates near the center shaft and moves upward, while the relatively heavy hydrophilic particles concentrate near the wall and are guided downward by the helical inserts. The results of pyritic sulfur removal from an Upper Freeport coal during CFC flotation are discussed.

The disposal of plant tailings in a safe and environmentally acceptable manner has taken on increased importance throughout the world, across all types of mineral beneficiation plants. In the U.S. plant life span, expansions and new plants in the current robust mineral markets are faced with environmental pressures to minimize the use of land for disposal by maximizing existing tailings pond capacity. The combination of many drivers from economic to environmental have brought paste thickeners into the coal industry (PasteThick 2007) Thickening tailings to a more concentrated slurry is a common step in the disposal flow sheet. Thickening to a non-settling ?paste?, also called ?thickened tails? or ?tailings stacking?, is a relatively recent development. This paper describes the paste thickener as an alternative for dewatering a fine coal refuse (tailings) stream for deposit as a paste. Initial operating results of the paste thickener are discussed.

A column reactor was applied for leaching with simultaneous flotation a complex sulfide ore in ferric sulfate-solution under oxygen pressure. Elemental sulfur and the flotable, nonreacted sulfides were collected in the froth and separated from the insoluble, nonflotable gangue minerals and solid particles formed during pressure leaching. The two-stage laboratory unit, built from Corning-glass elements is described. Results of the continuous leaching/flotation experiments conducted under 20-40 psig of oxygen pressure are presented, as are supplementary batch leaching experiments with iron precipitation under 150 psig oxygen pressure. High zinc extraction to solution and near total accumulation of lead sulfate in the nonflotable fraction are easily attainable. Relatively poor flotation of pyrite is probably caused by the partial oxidation of its sulfidic sulfur to sulfate.

Surveying of mines is a necessary step in coal mining to assemble maps which are used for tracking progress in the development of the mine and to plan future coal removal. A first approach for automatically building high-resolution two-dimensioml maps of underground coal mines is presented. The technique assembles laser rangefinder scans obtained from several locations within the mine into a consistent global map of the mine. Each range scan comprises thousands of data points collected in one second, thereby achieving higher resolution and much faster measurement compared to a human using a transit. The raw data (range scans) are processed to fuse them into a consistent representation. This paper describes a first approach to automated surveying and presents initial results of merging range scans. Improvements to the scan-merging algorithm are proposed.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) is in the final phase of completing the Calumet System component of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) by bringing the Thornton Composite Reservoir online by 2014. The Thornton Composite Reservoir will provide nearly 30 billion liters (7.9 billion gallons) of additional storage for minimization of combined sewer overflows(CSO) and flooding in the Chicago metropolitan area. The project requires that the existing 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter Thorn Creek tunnel conveying overbank flood flows is re-routed and connected to the Thornton Composite Reservoir. This paper presents the components of the Thornton Composite Reservoir and specifically the detailed evaluation of a drill-blast tunnel. Other project features include an access shaft, control gate, energy dissipating structure, bulkheads, and live tunnel connection. The construction contract will be procured in late 2009.

GENERAL STATEMENT The primary objectives of any field data gath¬ering effort should be to (1) identify and gather the data necessary for the project and (2) obtain the data in a state-of-the-art manner. All too often the initial field data are collected both areally and tem¬porally in an illogical manner without the guidance of a conceptual model of the ground water flow systems involved or even a review of existing geo¬logic literature on the area of interest. The initial data collected frequently are of limited value while necessary basic reconnaissance information is miss¬ing. Initial field data should be collected with the intent of developing a hydrologic overview of the potential mine site and surrounding area. Ob¬viously, one of the initial objectives is to define the area requiring a hydrologic investigation. The data requirements should be identified by the time frame in which collection should be made and by the corresponding increase in sophistication of the data requirements with development and operation of the mine. The data requirements are summarized in Table 1. INITIAL LEVEL SITE INVESTIGATION Area Determination The initial task of any hydrogeologic investi¬gation is to determine the boundaries of the area requiring study. Obviously, the site of the proposed mine is included in the study area. The areal extent beyond the site may be determined from an eval¬uation of existing geologic and topographic maps. Those formations that overlie the ore body, the formations containing the ore body, and the formation(s) that lies immediately beneath the ore body are of direct concern for proper site recon¬naissance. Additional formations below the ore body may require study depending upon their thick¬ness, hydraulic conductivity, and degree of inter¬connection with the mine workings. This initial viewpoint identifies hydrostratigraphic units based strictly on geologic concepts such as mineralogy and structure. Formation outcrops, synclines, an¬ticlines, faults, and fracture and joint patterns are used to delineate the area of the site reconnaissance. The simplistic hydrogeologic environment (il¬lustrated in Fig. 3, chapter 2) requires that field data be collected via test wells and/or geophysical techniques. This approach is necessitated by the lack of surface features such as formation outcrops, streams, and springs. Fig. 5 (chapter 2) illustrates a slightly more complex hydrogeologic regime. The potential mine sites at locations A, B, C, D, and E each intercept a different ground water flow sys¬tem or combination of flow systems. Therefore, each mine location requires that a different area and size of area be investigated. A more complex geologic setting as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 (chapter 2) may be approached differently. The area included for the site recon¬naissance should encompass sufficient surrounding area to include the outcrops of those formations suspected of being influenced by the future mine. Even adjacent areas not suspected of being influ¬enced may be investigated if the formations of in¬terest crop out in those areas. Such an extension of the area of investigation would provide a greater regional understanding of the hydrogeologic properties of the formations (hydrostratigraphic units) of interest. Geologic Investigation The initial step before conducting the site re¬connaissance is to review all existing literature on the geology of the area. Existing information should be augmented with new exploration data on the dip, strike, thickness, and lateral extent of the for¬mations in the area. Exploration hole logs should be reviewed for indications of lost circulation, rub¬ble zones, and water producing zones. There are three major components of a fully grouted roof bolt which primarily determine its ability to develop and sustain load: the steel rebar, the resin annulus, and the rock/grout interface. The untensioned, fully grouted roof bolt is subjected to loading only when the surrounding rock deforms. Vertical rock deformation is generally a result of strata sagging and bedding plane separation, whereas horizontal deformation is typically a result of bedding plane sliding. These two types of deformation create different types of internal loads with-in the roof bolt, tensile stress for vertical rock deformations and shear stress for horizontal rock deformations. Also, as a result of the mutual load transfer between the rock and bolt, shear stress will be developed along the grout/rock interface. According to the exact bolt loading conditions, different failure modes may occur: bolt axial failure, bolt shear failure, and shear failure along the grout/rock interface. Understanding these possible failure modes and their root causes is the key to eliminating roof failures in underground mines employing fully grouted resin bolts. Using ABAQUS 5.8, a finite element model was developed to simulate the components of the fully grouted bolt and its interaction with the surrounding roof strata. Several models were conducted to investigate how load transfer occurs between the rock and the bolt under different geological and mining conditions. The effects of bed-ding plane location and properties, and strata sequence on bolt stability were studied. Also, the effects of hole roughness on bolt stability were discussed. Bolt axial failure was not observed within the range of the studied parameters; however, a combination of high overburden depth, a bedding plane located at 2 to 3 ft from the roofline or a low coefficient of friction along the bedding plane caused strata sliding and shears failure in the bolt. Also, in the case of a weak immediate roof, the shear stress at the grout/rock interface could exceed its ultimate capacity lead to slippage.

The Eureka Mine is situated in the Guruve district of Zimbabwe, some 150 km north of Harare. The mine was first worked in 1895 and until recently was operated as a typical Zimbabwean "smallworking" with a single owner­operator and small labour force mining at up to 50m depth and processing 50 tonnes per day of ore via grind, gravity recovery and CIP. The gravity circuit comprised a Knelson 12" Centre discharge Concentrator from which a significant but variable portion of production was recovered. In 1996 exploration was commenced by Delta Gold Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd (DGZ), a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Gold NL of Australia, with the aim of testing mineralisation and establishing a large-scale open pit operation. A feasibility study was completed in April 1998. Construction began in August 1998 and first gold was poured in June 1999. The mine is designed to produce 65 000 oz/annum of gold from 1.5 million tonnes of opencast ore grading 2 git Au.

Introduction A new technology is evolving as a result of growing industry and government concerns over the potential impacts of possible airborne emissions from uranium tailings piles. A major component of the technology is the use of earth covers to stabilize the tailings after mill operations have ceased. While various analytical models have been used to predict the thickness of required covers, experimental validation of the models has been necessary. This paper presents the results of a field program to select and test cover material to determine its suitability for eventual reclamation of a currently active tailings pile. The two main criteria guiding the study were the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission radon flux requirements (reduction to less than twice background pre-1979, and to 2 pCi/m2 -sec above background post-1979) and the desire to employ locally available material. The methodology chosen for this study consisted of three main elements: o Determination of the background radon flux. o Determination of the radon flux from the tailings pile. o Experimental determination of the cover material diffusion coefficient and and calculation of cover thickness. The first two elements of the study are relatively straightforward, the last phase is discussed in detail. Background Radon Flux Measurements of radon-222 emanation rates from the surface of the ground were taken at three sampling locations. Samples were collected by means of the accumulator can method described by Wilkening, 1977. Both morning and afternoon samples were collected at each site to obtain an average. The measured fluxes were fairly uniform and did not differ greatly among sites. The overall average flux for all sites was 0.63[+]0.28(o) pCi/m2 -sec. This value is equal to the average radium-226 concentration determined in the soil, thus yielding a one to one ratio of radon-222 emitted (in pCi/m2 -sec) to soil radium content (in pCi/g). A pilot plant investigation of a semi-autogenous mill - ball mill circuit is described. The plant was operated with minus eight-inch diabase as feed material to the semi-autogenous mill. The semi-autogenous mill recycle screen underflow was put to a ball mill in closed circuit with a cyclone. An operating Work Index of 13.3 to 14.9 was obtained with the pilot ball mill. This Index is substantially in agreement with the scalped feed laboratory Work Index for 15.3 for recycle screen underflow. The Bond Index of the diabase was 15.8. Thus, one may use the scalped feed laboratory Work Index to size semi-autogenous grinding plant ball mills.

A hydrologically isolated surface coal mine was reclaimed using acid material handling, alkaline addition and ground-water management techniques. Eight pit floor drains were installed during reclamation to intercept ground-water flow in the mine backfill and minimize water table buildup. All drains began flowing within six months of installation. Water quality and ground-water discharge have been monitored for four years after mine closure. A thin water table aquifer about five to seven feet thick has developed in minespoil about 20 to 40 feet thick. Ground-water flow direction is largely controlled by geologic structure and the drains. Median ground- water discharge is about 0.43 gallons per acre per minute, and varies an order of magnitude between wet and dry seasons. About 19 % of precipitation enters the aquifer as recharge. Seven of the eight drains typically discharge net alkaline water. Alkalinity is produced continuously and concentrations are highest during dry periods. Conversely, sulfate and acidity concentrations increase during wet periods as slugs of accumulated acid products are leached. Overall water quality is controlled principally by minespoil geochemistry and added alkaline material. The drains have successfully directed ground-water to a planned discharge area. Without the drains, a ground-water mound was expected to form against a buried highwall and discharge over a large area.

A multimedia tutorial illustrating the geology and mineral resources of Gulf Coast salt domes has been developed as a pilot project for a course on Texas geology and resources at the University of Texas at Austin. The principal objective of the tutorial is to educate students with limited background in geological sciences about a major local geologic feature and its geologic and economic significance. The content of the tutorial represents materials generally covered in 4 hours of lecture and laboratory instruction. These materials are presented using a flattened hierarchy of topics, each accessible from a central menu, including salt-dome history, salt tectonics, anhydrite and calcite cap rocks, mineral resources, and geophysical character. Information concerning salt-dome geology is communicated using interactive software; sound and animation are used throughout to reinforce key concepts. Visual aspects include field views, hand specimens, and photomicrographs that were digitized from slides. Illustrations were created using a graphics program or scanned from available archives. Each visual element has an accompanying explanation, which in many cases is linked to other parts of the tutorial. Navigation is accomplished using hyper-links or a set of unobtrusive buttons. The program includes a glossary of the major minerals associated with salt domes available as a pull-down menu and digitized video footage of the Gulf of Mexico sea floor to illustrate the active environment of the formation of the salt-dome cap rock. In addition, a group of interactive questions is presented to assess the level of mastery. Technical aspects were accomplished using a Power Macintosh ? 7100AV and a variety of commercial software. Actual linking of information was done with Authorware? 3.0 Educational, an icon-based, multimedia authoring program. Graphic illustration was done with Adobe Illustrator ?; image processing was accomplished using Adobe Photoshop?; video was cap¬tured, edited, and compressed using Adobe Premiere ?. The interactive nature of the project was designed with regard to future means of dissemination, especially on the World Wide Web. This tutorial serves as a template to build additional modules covering the entire course. A modular approach to the coding of the project and extensive self-documentation should ensure the viabil¬ity of the project by allowing other workers with moder¬ate computer skills to complete other lessons within the curriculum framework.

A study(1) on the sulfuric acid extraction of alumina from some Pennsylvania ferruginous clays indicated that the published electrolytic method(2)(3) seems to be more efficient than the known chemical methods (4-9) for removing iron from the leach liquor. The main disadvantages of the chemical methods are the consumption of excessive amounts of reagents and/or the precipitation of prohibitive amounts of aluminum. In the electrolytic method, iron is deposited on the mercury cathode, while aluminum is not and remains in solution. This method, however, had been handicapped by the lack of an effective and economical way to purify the contaminated mercury cathode.(7)(l0). Described herein is a scheme for cleaning the mercury cathode, and for recycling the clean mercury back into the electrolytic cell. Armed with such an apparatus, the effects of applied potential, temperature, and operation time on the electrolytic separation of iron from aluminum sulfate solutions were determined. For the sake of comparing results, a term, removability, was coined to represent the percentage of iron amalgamated per unit height of electrolyte (cm.), per unit surface area of cathode (cm.2), per unit of operation time (second).

The limestone deposit of Gâsgruvan, Sweden contains around 89.2 per cent of calcite. Conventional and column flotation studies have been carried out using sodium oleate and modified fatty acid collectors in the presence of sodium silicate modifier. The effects of collector and silicate concentrations, and particle size on the flotation response of calcite have been investigated. The results have been discussed in comparision to the performance of conventional and column flotation cells. The feed size is found to be a significant factor to achieve a high grade calcite concentrate either by conventional or by column flotation. The loss of selectivity at fine particle sizes is examined using a modified DLVO theory.
