In 1973, the Subcommittee on Contracting Practices, U. S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology, National Academy of Sciences, under the able chairmanship of A. A. Mathews, Engineering Consultant, now residing at Kaunakokai, Hawaii, undertook the task of developing recommendations for improving the performance of underground construction work, reducing the costs of such work and minimizing the adverse atmosphere in which owners and contractors were performing their respective functions. The author of this paper and C. F. Palmetier, a highly qualified engineer, were thereupon appointed as staff assistants to the Subcommittee, to conduct a study of existing practices and relationships in Western Europe and in the United States, to formulate recommendations, for consideration by the Subcommittee and the participants in a future workshop, as to desirable improvements in United States contracting practices and relationships. The study, conducted during 1973 and 1974, involved personal interviews of a total of 162 owners, engineers, contractors, lawyers, and educators throughout the United States and in 7 European countries, the analysis of 178 replies to questionnaires sent to individuals and firms involved directly or indirectly in construction, and a workshop, near Napa, California, attended by 53 representatives of all segments of the construction community. The resulting report, entitled "Better Contracting for Underground Construction", was submitted by the Subcommittee to the National Academy of Sciences, which approved its publication in 1974 by the National Technical Information Service. Nonliving waste biomass consisting of Aspergillus niger attached to wheat bran was used as a biosorbent for the removal of copper and zinc from aqueous solutions. Copper and zinc uptake by the biomass obeyed Langmuir isotherms. The binding capacity of the biomass for copper was found to be higher than that for zinc. The metal uptake, expressed in milligrams per grain of biomass, was found to be a function of: •the initial metal concentration (with the uptake decreasing with increasing initial concentration), •the biomass loading (with the uptake decreasing with increasing biomass loading) and •pH (with the uptake increasing with increasing pH in the range of L5 and 6.0). The metal uptake was significantly affected in the presence of a co-ion. The uptake of copper by the biomass decreased in the presence of zinc and vice versa. The decrease in metal uptake was dependent on the concentrations of metals in the two-component aqueous solutions. The effect of copper on zinc uptake was more pronounced than the effect of zinc on copper uptake.

A series of laboratory based push and pull tests were carried out to investigate how surface profile influence the load transfer mechanism of bolt/resin interface. Tests were carried out in both 75 mm and 150 mm long steel sleeves. Three types of bolts were examined, they were bolts most commonly used for strata reinforcements in underground coal mines in Australia. The bolts had near equal core diameter but of different profile configurations. The change in the length of the encapsulation sleeve was examined in light of the small number of profiles encapsulated effectively in short 75 mm long sleeves. The results showed that peak loads and displacements were directly related to the height and the spacing of the bolt surface profiles. Profile spacing appears to have greater influence on load transfer capacity than the profile height.

This study analyzed laboratory comminution techniques for respirable mine dust generation and the properties of the resulting dusts. It was the objective of the study to determine the suitability of the resulting dusts in reflecting the properties of natural airborne dust. This paper deals specifically with the amount of contamination introduced into the generated dust as a result of abrasion when using nine different grinding methods. The analysis was made by comparing the content of 25 chemical elements in the lab-generated dusts with the same elements in the airborne coal mine dusts. It was found that all the lab-generated dusts possessed contamination but that several methods produced smaller percentages of contamination and that the residence time in the grinding device was an important factor in the contamination levels.

The heterogeneous distributions of nodule sizes, cover-ages and abundances and the variability of their burial und association with sediments and rock outcrops on the seafloor have emerged as crucial parameters in considering the exploitation potential of the manganese nodules in the central part of the Indian Ocean. Nodules with the long axis measuring from 20 and 40 mm (0.8 and 1.6 in.) account for nearly 60% to 70% of those evaluated from photographic and grab-sample data. In addition, 75% of the nodules (by weight) are between 20 and 60 mm (0.8 to 2.4 in.). The distribution of nodules with abundances ranging from 1 to 20 kg/m2 as well as coverages of 1 % to 90% on the seafloor are important considerations in demarcating the potential areas for nodule mining. The mining of areas with higher concentrations of nodules, such as along slopes associated with less sediment, would result in the enhanced recovery of nodules compared to areas with low nodule concentrations, such as in valleys and plains where thick sediment covers occur. The mining head will encounter substrates such as hard rock exposures, either with or without Fe-Mn encrustations, as well as soft sediment layers in the nodule fields. It must be able to collect buried nodules under sediment cover, and it must be able to negotiate uphill and downhill slopes in mining areas. Mapping prior to mining must delineate areas to he avoided and must define locations to be mined. The requirements suggest that the nodule collector must be a dynamic (active) system with sensors to detect areas of potential nodule concentrations, as well as features that are hazardous (or unfavorable) for mining operations.

In traditional construction contracting practice, the owner allocated almost all risks to the contractor, saying in effect, "you deal with all construction problems and all third parties, and don't bother me." In this same tradition, the architect or engineer designed a structure in its finished condition, and if he thought about the construction problems that might be involved in building it, he was careful not to express any opinions on these matters in the contract documents. This feudal attitude fostered two results: 1. Contractors added high contingencies to their bids to cover the costs of risks. 2. Litigation of construction contract claims blossomed. Broadly, the owners lost--the courts reallocated many risks the owners thought they had laid on the contractor. Thoughtful owners and engineers recognized that owners were paying for risks twice --once in bid contingencies and a second time in court. Meanwhile, contractors were not getting rich; they were losing money on delays and disputes, and just about getting even (if they were lucky) in court. And construction law was becoming an increasingly lucrative field--for lawyers. Furthermore, with the growing influx of lawyers onto the construction scene, the owner-contractor-engineer relationship became increasingly an adversary one. The emphasis came to be on culpability rather than capability--who could be held responsible for breaching some contract clause, not who might find a solution to some common problem. This game was played with equal vigor by owners and contractors.

Platinum group metals (PGM) are often found in close association with arsenide and sulfarsenide minerals in copper-nickel bearing gabbroic rocks. Major losses of platinum in flotation have been attributed to the susceptibilities of the arsenic minerals to oxidation and subsequent losses of their recoveries in cleaner flotation stages. The use of a nitrogen atmosphere in grinding and in flotation, the effectiveness of activation for improving their floatabilities, and the role that electrochemical interactions play not only between grinding media and minerals, but also among different minerals, are discussed.

In order to improve handling of subsidence damages the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund supported the development of novel cost-effective methods of repair. The research in developing the repairs was directed towards the most common and costly damages that had been observed. As a result repair techniques were designed for structurally cracked foundations in the tension zone; structurally cracked foundations in the compression zone; and damaged or undamaged tilted foundations. When appropriate, the postulated methods would result in: 1. significant cost savings (over conventional procedures); 2. a structural capacity greater than when the foundation was untracked; and 3. an aesthetic appeal. All the postulated repair methodologies were laboratory and/or field tested. The paper will summarize the essentials of each technique developed and the test results.

The southern Florida phosphate deposits that will be mined in the future contain significant amounts of dolomite. Because high MgO levels are undesirable in phosphoric acid production, several flotation schemes for the removal of the dolomite have been attempted. Alternatively, selective flocculation has been suggested as a potential process. A high MgO rock was simulated with a 30:10:60 mixture of apatite, dolomite and silica, respectively. Single mineral selectivity was observed in the apatite-silica and dolomite- silica systems using Polyacrylic acid (PAA) and Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) flocculants, respectively. However, no single mineral selectivity was observed in the apatite-dolomite system using PEO. Heteroflocculation, suspected to be the major reason for the loss of selectivity, was minimized by the addition of a site blocking agent (SBA), consisting of a lower- molecular-weight fraction of PEO. Process parameters such as size reduction schemes, flocculant/SBA dosage and pH were investigated to achieve the desired separation. The selectivity obtained in binary mixed-mineral tests was also achieved in the ternary mixed-mineral system, namely, the apatite-dolomite-silica system. In this report, surface chemical characterization of the samples and their flocculation behavior are discussed.

Georgia?s Coastal Plain contains important sediment-hosted deposits of kaolin, bauxite, heavy minerals, sand and gravel, silica sand, carbonate rocks, and fuller's earth. Genesis, location, size, and quality of these deposits are related to terrestrial, marginal-marine, and shallow-marine depositional environments that evolved during development of the southeastern North American continental margin. From the Cretaceous to Eocene, kaolin and aluminous sediments, which contained mica and feldspar, were deposited in marshes, ponds, and bays located in deltas or behind barrier islands or spits. In the Cretaceous sediments, subsequent, intensive, in situ chemical weathering converted mica and feldspar to kaolin. Kaolin eroded from deeply weathered granitic rocks in the Georgia Piedmont was deposited in Paleocene to Eocene sediments. Subaerial exposure during the Paleocene and Eocene desilicated kaolin sediments to form bauxite. Sand and gravel, silica sand, and heavy-mineral deposits are found in Cretaceous to Eocene fluvial and shoreline sediments, some of which are associated with the kaolin and bauxite deposits. Source areas, intensive chemical weathering in the source areas, transportation by the major river systems, and deposition of these clastic sediments in similar or nearby depositional environments are common elements in the genesis of these resources. Eocene fuller's-earth deposits are opaline claystones in near-shore to shelf-marine sediments, which overlie the kaolin-bearing strata. These claystones consist of montmorillonite and opal/ cristobalite derived from alteration of diatom frustules. Favorable ocean currents provided nutrients for extensive planktonic growth. Oligocene and Miocene carbonate rocks were deposited principally in shallow-marine embayments. Miocene fuller's- earth deposits in south-central Georgia and adjacent parts of Florida contain palygorskite that formed through alteration of montmorillonite/bentonite clays. Deposition and subsequent alteration occurred in shallow, brackish-water lagoons under relatively high temperature and subtropical conditions. Middle and late Miocene phosphorites were deposited on a shallow carbonate-shelf platform and were concentrated proximal to anticlinal highs. Numerous marine transgressions and regressions since the beginning of the Pleistocene resulted in shoreline detrital deposits containing aggregate sand, silica sand, and heavy minerals on the Coastal Plain and on the Continental Shelf. Major river systems transported sand and heavy minerals from source areas in the Piedmont and Upper Coastal Plain. Deltaic deposits of heavy minerals were redistributed and concentrated by longshore currents, shoreline processes, and aeolian processes. River-terrace sediments, correlative with the Pleistocene shoreline deposits, contain sand-and-gravel and silica-sand deposits. Aeolian dune sands are associated with both Pleistocene fluvial and shoreline detrital deposits.

The fluidized bed was invented by Fritz Winkler of Germany in 1921. The first application in the U.S. was in the development of the fluidized bed catalytic cracking of petroleum in 1942. Today, fluid bed cracking reactors are an integral part of every oil refinery. When fluid bed technology was first considered for applications outside the petroleum industry it was recognized to have uniform temperature, close control of the gaseous atmosphere and excellent mixing between solids and gases. Roasting of sulfide ores and concentrates was an obvious match. The first application was a single stage roaster for gold refining in 1947. There have been over four hundred commercial fluid bed roasters built and operated successfully in the four decades since the fluid bed was invented. There are three general categories of roasting applications. The largest number of roasters fall into the dead roasting category which includes gold ore roasters. The other categories are sulfating roasters and partial roasters (Reference 1).

This paper focuses on the -1/2 mm cleaning at Elk Run Coal. The original circuitry incorporated desliming cyclones. Problems with slimes entrainment in the cyclone underflow (froth cell feed) resulted in poor froth cell selectivity. Laboratory test work led to the installation of high frequency desliming screens. Consequently, great improvement in cell performance was brought about by enhanced desliming with the ability to use split flotation. The modifications resulted in significant improvement in total plant performance and overall yield while maintaining clean coal quality.

Just prior to the close of the century, the Mine Safety and Health Review Commission issued its long-awaited decision in Berwind Natural Resources et al. vs. Secretary of Labor[1] to usher in the new millennium. The case arose as a result of a mine explosion in Eastern Kentucky resulting in the US Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) issuance of 225 citations, not only to the contractor but to four affiliated entities of Berwind Corp. While an Administrative Law Judge dismissed citations to three of the four Berwind entities, MSHA and the remaining Berwind entity appealed the case to the commission. Although the commission effectively left intact the administrative law judge's decision, it announced a new theory of liability that would apparently be applied in the future, namely the unitary operator theory.

Ever since A Decade of Digital Computing in the Minerals Industry was published in 1969, mining men have expressed the need for an additional reference on computer methods. It was felt such a volume should spell out the "how to" of computer applications in the solution of their problems. Computers in the minerals industry will be 20 years old when the 1979 SME Fall Meeting and the 16th International Symposium on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry (APCOM) take place jointly in Tucson, AZ. On such an occasion it was thought appropriate to publish an anniversary volume which reviewed current practices and projected what might prevail as computer methods for the future. Thus was born the idea to publish Computer Methods for the 80's. The first planning meeting for this volume took place in Las Vegas, NV, during the 1976 annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers. It quickly became evident that no single computer method existed to solve most mining problems; rather, mining computer methods are generally tailored to fit unique geologic, mining, and organizational conditions. Hence a format which included both the theory and practice for each of the computer applications was adopted for this volume.

INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines (The Bureau) remote sensing researchers at the Denver (CO) Research Center, have been investigating computerized methods to detect and map surface linear features called "lineaments" for ground hazard assessment in mines. Many of these lineaments at the test mine site were found to correlate to subsurface geologic discontinuities such as faults, fractures, and joints that intersect coal seams at depth. These features adverse1 y affect the roof and rib integrity in underground mines, thus contributing to rock failures that may result in injuries to mine workers and loss of production. Advance knowledge of the existence of such hazardous geologic features can aid in mine planning and development. Lineaments may be observed in a variety of images of the earth's surface. Linear features that can be observed using Landsat mu1ti spectral scanner data (MSS) images range from regional (greater than 3 miles in length) to an intermediate length of from 1 to 3 miles. These images are recorded in discrete radiation bands in the green, red, and near-infrared portions of the el ectromaynetic spectrum. These data are acquired from the EROS Data Center of the U.S Geological Survey, Sioux Falls, SD, in digital format on magnetic tapes that are suitable for processing on certain minicomputers. Shorter lineaments length (less than 1 mile) can be observed in high- to low-a1titude aerial photography, radar, and infrared images with image scale ratios of 1:1,000,000 or less. These linear features can correlate to smaller dimensioned faults, and to fracture and joint sets at the local geologic scale. Other informational sources can help substantiate 1ineament analyses, such as well logs, mine naps, topographic data, and geophysical data acquired over the study site. The Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) held its fifth annual conference in Montreal, Quebec, Canada earlier this year. “The Minerals Industry: Responding to the Global Challenge” was the first MEMS conference to be held outside of the United States. About 125 mining- and minerals-related professionals attended. The MEMS program included six sessions and three distinguished speaker addresses. The session topics included: “Minerals in the Macro economy: Development in Demand,” “Trends in Global Metals Supply: The Producers’ Challenge,” “Global Environmental Issues: Policy Perspectives,” “Global Environmental Issues: Quantitative Analysis” and “Minerals in the CIS: Phoenix or Albatross?” A student session was also offered. It provided a competition for monetary awards for outstanding papers.

Millions of years ago, in late Cretaceous time before man existed on Earth, tremendous orogenic forces began to change the face of the western part of the North American Continent. Catastrophic events marked by huge uplifts of thousands of square miles in the Cordilleran Belt, some of which are barely discernible in the geologic record, were accompanied by long periods of batholithic intrusions and volcanic eruptions. These events produced the great Rocky Mountain systems, which were at the time even higher and more rugged than they are today. Such activity continued into Tertiary time, and during the Pliocene and Pleistocene periods millions of tons of volcanic ash were hurled skyward by explosive volcanic activity and carried by the westerly winds to the east where it settled out of the atmosphere and deposited over thousands of square miles of the high plains. Unusually heavy rains, probably caused in part by the volcanic activity itself, together with high winds, reworked and redeposited the freshly fallen ash into lakes and depressions of varying sizes and shapes. Subsequent deposits of sand, gravel and loess covered the deposits of volcanic ash, preserving them in the condition in which they are found today. In many places erosion has cut through the sand, gravel, loess, and volcanic ash so that in favorable localities on hillsides and gullies, exposures of volcanic ash can be seen interbedded with sand and gravel.

The trend in the U.S. coal industry in recent years has been a continuous increase in the percentage of coal produced by surface mining methods. Though the predicted energy demands promise a good market for coal, growing legal and environmental issues make the exploitation of a coal deposit by surface methods a difficult and challenging task. Major emphasis has to be placed on the development of integrated mining and reclamation schemes which enhance the possibilities of post mining land uses. Since no major breakthroughs are foreseen in the near future in surface mining equipment, innovative applications of current equipment must be developed. Draglines have been and are expected to continue as the primary earthmovers in surface mining of coal. A dragline simulation model has been developed which has the capability to analyze various deployment schemes such as conventional side casting, advance benching, and extended benching. The mathematical aspects of the model, the input data, and the output results are discussed with reference to an application in an operating mine. The model can be used to select a suitable dragline for given geological and mining conditions and to study the effect of alternative mining layouts and spoiling plans on machine production.

The zinc flotation circuit was sampled to provide sized information on its metallurgical performance. A good balance was obtained and the roughing, scavenging, cleaning and regrind sections were assessed. Substantial losses of sphalerite occurred in all sizes. The limitations were poor recovery in the cleaning section which resulted in substantial recycling of 15-30µm sphalerite and iron sulphides, and inability to float +38µm sphalerite in the roughers. Regrinding increased sphalerite recovery by 7% with no loss in grade. Liberation measurements enabled balances for six size fractions to be calculated and the role of liberation on the metallurgical performance was assessed.

In the mid 60's Prochem & Hydrochem Development, it's research division, developed the high efficiency Maxflo impeller. Since the Maxflo impeller had a design that had proven to be very efficient in gas-liquid-solid contacting, it was a natural extension to apply this design to flotation & the research commenced in the mid 80's. An opportunity to test the energy savings occurred at Dickenson Mines in 1987, & comparative results with existing conventional flotation cells showed a marked increase in capacity, grade & recovery with 25% less power applied. This r success was followed by the installation of the fist agitated Flotation Colunm (5ft. dia. x 25ft. tall).
