A mine's productivity can be significantly increased by using physical and chemical methods to increase the bulk density of newly mined coal. Increases in coal bulk density allows greater amounts of coal to be placed in ships, barges, railroad cars, trucks, shuttle cars and scoops. Increased bulk density can help increase productivity by increasing throughput of container-based, materials-handling systems. Small, easy-to-achieve changes in mining operations are required to obtain the increased productivity. This article deals with chemical methods used to increase coal bulk density. The results and discussion are based on experiments performed in the laboratory. Research at the University of Kentucky using a chemical method shows that an increase of about 15% in bulk density can be achieved using typically small quantities of commercial reagents. This increase in bulk density can produce a proportional increase in the productivity of a mine.

The quality of water in mine pit lakes depends in part on the physical limnology, including such factors as thermal and chemical stratification, turnover and the development of anoxic conditions with depth. Limnologic data collected from four existing pit lakes in Montana and Saskatchewan indicate that pit lakes develop a thermocline (temperature stratification) in the upper 10 to 30 m (33 to 100 ft) of the water column. Two of the pit lakes, 26- and 55-m (85and 180 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of the entire water column, whereas two deeper pit lakes, 110- and 240-m (360- to 790 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of only the upper portion of the water column. In the deeper lakes, seasonal mixing does not extend through the entire water column, and a distinct chemocline develops with depth.

This paper discusses a laboratory investigation that studied the microscale flow characteristics of copper ores and the variation in flow behavior resulting from flow of leach solution. Fractures in 40- and 100-mm-diam (1.5- and 4-in.-diam) cores were first mapped by visual inspection. The permeability of cores to water-stressed in a triaxial stress field representative of in situ conditions - was estimated. The samples were then exposed to 20g/L (2.7 oz/gal) sulfuric acid and the experiment was repeated. The porosity and the rate of recovery of copper from the specimen during leaching were also studied. The measured permeability of unleached samples with no visible fractures ranged from 10-16 to 10-19 m2 and it increased as leaching progressed. The porosity increased significantly with leaching, while the rate of copper recovery decreased.

Political events during the past decade have caused businesses throughout the world to think globally. Countries once closed to free market enterprises are now open and seeking out foreign investment to help improve the well being of their populations. The mining industry has always been a global one. Today, though, the industry has become even more global. The driving forces behind this include the opening up of higher grade, lower cost mineral deposits in undeveloped and developing nations. In addition, permitting delays in the United States, coupled with stricter environmental guidelines and a general anti-mining attitude, have forced the mining industry to look outside US borders. The Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) took as the theme of its seventh annual professional program "Economic Globalization of the Mining Industry." About 100 people attended the conference held in Arlington, VA in late March. Speakers included members of the investment community, academia, government and the mining industry.

Feather-edging, a major source of injury and fatal accidents in Australia, South Africa and the United States, refers to a phenomenon in which the roof at the goaf edge falls, often suddenly, as a thin wafer of rock that overrides conventional timber breaker lines. The fall may adversely affect a working bord at a distance of 15 m (50ft) or more from the goaf edge. Feather-edging typically occurs in relatively massive, strong roof strata such as sandstone or conglomerate. This paper presents the results of a test in which a concentrated row of fully grouted bolts were used to prevent feather-edging in an Australian pillar- ("total-") extraction coal mine. The test demonstrated that the bolts could resist feather-edging.

The following report details the successful construction of Contract 2A of the Three Rivers Water Quality Management Program, Intrenchment Creek Combined Sewer Overflow Conveyance System, in DeKalb County for the City of Atlanta, Georgia. The contract required construction of approximately 2878 m (9443 ft) of tunnel bored to an initial diameter of 7.95 m (26 ft 1 in), with provisions to concrete line those portions designated by the engineer to a finished internal diameter of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in). Flanking the tunnel are two shafts. The upstream shaft was excavated to a nominal diameter of 4.87 m (16 ft) to accommodate a finished internal diameter of 3.66 m (12 ft). This shaft required a transition boot fully concrete lined to final dimensions of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) wide, 13.72 m (45 ft) long, and varying in height from 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) to 12.80 m (42 ft). Associated work necessary to complete the contractual obligations included installation of 22.86 m (75 ft) of cut-and-cover box culvert, 484 m (1589 ft) of open-cut sewer installation in sizes ranging from 0.30 m (12 in) to 1.68 m (5 ft 6 in), one river crossing, 137.46 m (451 ft) of monolithic concrete trapezoidal channel, and installation of 19125 cu m (25000 cu yd) of select fill material compacted and graded to finished contours. The downstream shaft was excavated to a minimum diameter of 12.04 m (39 ft 6 in) and concrete lined to a finished internal diameter of 10.67 m (35 ft). Requirements here included installation of a complete pumping station with all mechanical, electrical, and structural elements necessary for dewatering the tunnel through the controlled use of four 250 hp submersible pumps discharging into the facilities of the Intrenchment Creek Water Pollution Plant. The boron review arrived too late for the June issue. The United States was the world's largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1993. Boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled an estimated 958 kt (1.05 million st), yielding 526 kt (580,000 st) of B203, according to the US Bureau of Mines. Estimated value was $322 million. This level of production was about 5% less than 1992 revised production figures. The United States continued to provide essentially all its own boron while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1993 was 900 people, about the same as in 1992. That was down from 1988 levels of 1250 people. Total world production of boron in 1993 was about 2.5 Mt (2.75 million st), yielding about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) of B203. World production in 1993 was about equal to revised 1992 levels. Production United States In 1993, mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals. Domestic producers, in order of quantity of production, were: • US Borax and Chemical Corp., which operates an open pit kernite and tincal mine at Boron, CA, producing boric acid and borax products, • North American Chemical Co., which produces boric acid and borax products as coproducts from chemical operations at Searles Lake, CA and • American Borate Co., which produced small amounts of colemanite and shipped from inventories from its operation in Death Valley, CA.

An intensive study was started in 1968 to determine the most economical process for winning nickel and cobalt from an extensive de- posit of complex, low grade nickel-cobalt ore (1.6% Ni, 0.10% CO) designated "the Greenvale ore." In 1974 the commercial plant at Yabulu, in Queensland, Australia, began processing the ore. In the interim, a great deal of laboratory and pilot-plant effort was applied to develop technical, process and commercial design data to demonstrate to potential financial backers and customers that a full-scale plant was feasible. The laboratory test work, pilot plant facilities and pro- gram are briefly reviewed in this paper.

Energy West Mining operates the Deer Creek and Cottonwood/Trail Mountain coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau about 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Price, UT. The Deer Creek Mine extracts the Upper Blind Canyon seam and the Cottonwood/Trail Mountain Mine extracts the Hiawatha seam 12 to 36 m (40 to 120 ft) below. Both seams average about 2.8 m (9 ft) in thickness. Cover depths exceed 550 m (1,800 ft) in a large portion of the unmined reserve. Stability problems at Deer Creek are mostly due to coal bursts caused by high stresses associated with deep cover and sandstone channels. Most of the bursts have occurred in gate pillars and, to a lesser extent, at the longwall face and during development. The introduction of a two-entry gateroad system with 9-m- (30-ft-) wide yield pillars has been a major factor in controlling and minimizing gate pillar [ ] bursts (Agapito et al., 1988). However, some bursting began to occur in the 9-m- (30-ft-) wide pillars as cover depths reached 550 to 610 m (1,800 to 2,000 ft). This was due to more rapid and higher abutment loading in areas with very strong roof and stiff floor.

This paper presents the latest developments in the flotation model being developed collaboratively between the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre in Brisbane, Australia, and the Mineral Processing Research Unit of the University of Cape Town in South Africa as part of the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project. It includes: - characterisation of flotation cells using the bubble surface area flux, Sb; - relationship of Sb to the overall flotation rate constant; - determination of the froth recovery factor; - evaluation of ore floatability; - modelling of entrainment - development of the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR); - use of the model in design and optimization of flotation plants; and - current and future work.

The history, current applications and future of biotechnical developments in the metals' extraction industry are reviewed. Bioleaching of copper minerals continues to be the most significant application. Uranium bioleaching was successfully demonstrated at industrial scale. Developments are now being made in biooxidative pretreatment of refractory gold concentrates, ores and low-grade materials. Advancements are forthcoming in water and solid mine waste bioreclamation, including metals' biosorption, wetland treatment of acid mine drainage, and biodegradation of cyanide in spent, heap-leach operations. Better understanding of the types and functions of microorganisms involved in metal interactions could advance genetic engineering applications in bioleaching and bioreclamation.

The increasing popularity of column flotation as an efficient and profitable mineral beneficiation technique has resulted in the need to perform a study of basic column operating parameters in order to understand mineral behavior in a column. Variation of column rougher flotation parameters on the Nevada Fish Creek fluorite and Utah Collins manganese ores enabled characterization of four beneficiation zones within a column flotation cell. Although specific mineral behavior in each zone was peculiar to the mineral system involved, particle retention time predominantly affected both manganese and fluorite recoveries in the collection zones of the column while enhancing mineral grades in the cleaning zones. Column parameters such as column length, feed injection location, and tailings recirculation velocity were inherently linked to particle retention time and retention time distribution, both of which affected mineral recovery. Froth depth had a discernible effect on fluorite concentrate grades; as froth depth increased, fluorite grades increased. Wash water additions affected both fluorite and manganese recoveries and fluorite grade. Axial mixing drastically reduced fluorite and manganese recoveries due to short circuiting of some of the feed slurry in the column.

In this paper, electroleaching and electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules are discussed along with the role of galvanic interactions in bioleaching. Polarization studies using a manganese nodule slurry electrode system indicated that the maximum dissolution of iron and manganese due to electrochemical reduction occurred at negative DC potentials of -600 and -1,400 mV(SCE). Electroleaching and electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans at the above negative applied DC potentials resulted insignificant dissolution of copper, nickel and cobalt in IMH2S04 and in sulfuric acid solution at pH 0.5 and 2.0. Mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules are discussed. Galvanic leaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of externally added pyrite and pyrolusite for enhancement of dissolution was also studied. Various electrochemical and biochemical parameters were optimized, and the electroleaching and galvanic processes thus developed are shown to yield almost complete dissolution of all metal values. This electrobioleaching process developed in the laboratory may be cost effective, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. This paper summarizes several chemical purification methods used for producing high-pure industrial minerals These methods, mainly including alkali melting, acid leaching, oxidation-reduction bleaching, are respectively used to eliminate the impurities such as silicates in graphite and diamond, ferric oxides in quartz sand or other valuable silicate minerals, colouring impurities in kaoline, barite and other minerals which are required to have a high-whiteness. The fundamentals of the chemical purification methods and some practical examples in China are introduced in the paper.

This paper deals with the effects of various bit geometric parameters on the failure characteristics of rock material. Improving the rock-cutting efficiency of continuous mining machines has proven to be an interesting research topic during the last few decades. In the current study, an automated rotary rock-cutting simulator, duplicating a continuous miner, was used to study these parameters in the laboratory. The improvement of bit performance in terms of its life, cutting efficiency, dust production and energy consumption has drawn widespread attention. Research has demonstrated that optimizing bit parameters can result in efficient fragmentation of rock. Indiana limestone rock material was used in this study. The bit tip angle, bit tip size, bit spacing, depth of cut and cutting velocity of the rotary drum were varied to investigate the failure characteristics. The cutting pressure, penetrating pressure and the depth of cut were monitored on the simulator during the cutting process. Airborne dust and settled dust were measured for each experiment. Then, the specific airborne dust and specific energy were determined for each type of bit. Triaxial tests were carried out to correlate the failure angle of the rock in the static case to the dynamic cutting process failure. The physical and mechanical properties of the rock were also determined to assess their influence on the wear characteristics of each bit.

The adsorption of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) of molecular weight 25,000 onto alumina was studied as a function of pH. The adsorption isotherms were also determined. The adsorption density increases with increasing pH, while the isotherms are rounded and of the low affinity type. Electrokinetic studies indicate that the electrophoretic mobilities are reduced in magnitude in proportion to the PVA concentration, without any shift in isoelectric-point (iep). This resembles the influence of an indifferent electrolyte. The calculated values of the free energy of adsorption between alumina and PVA are suggestive of hydrogen bonding. FTIR spectro-scopic data provide additional evidence in support of hydrogen bonding.

As part of the waste characterisation program to address site reclamation, WISMUT GmbH initiated 56 columns operated as large-scale humidity cell tests. The columns were initiated to assess the acid generation characteristics of waste rock from 14 waste rock piles distributed around the site. Of the 56 tests, 11 are ongoing and have been operational in excess of 160 weeks. The results to date from these long-term tests are surnrnarised. In particular, the methods for, and importance of, establishing the availability of the carbonate neutralisation potential and acid generation potential respectively, are discussed. Geochemical controls on uranium, and the conformity between the geochemical models MINTEQA2 and EQ3/6 in assessing these controls are discussed. Testing indicates that waste rock with an MS-NP:AP ratio in excess of about 2.7 should result in net neutral pH conditions.

Loading shovels are at the heart of most surface mine production. As truck sizes have increased, shovel manufacturers have matched them with larger shovels (see table, page 343). Further increases in shovel size may be in order if trucks in the 270-t (300-st) range find acceptance at the largest surface mines. However, larger shovels are not currently the primary focus of shovel design engineers. Competition and user pressure are combining to keep their work directed toward improved shovel productivity and efficiency. Computer design technology and advanced electronics play an increasingly prominent role in this work. "Improved diagnostic capability, system monitoring, vibration analysis and above all increased user friendliness in machine control systems are being pursued by most manufacturers working in our industry today," observes Stuart R. Cotterill, director of marketing for Harnischfeger Corp. The use of computer-aided design (CAD) systems in shovel design has been in place for many years. However, recent advances in computer capability and improved software programs and graphics are making computers even more useful.
