Corrosion of steel roof support systems can cause potential premature failure of the support, thus adversely affecting the excavation stability and rock-related safety. An in-house corrosion test system was designed and developed to test full-length roof bolts for material performance based on tensile load capacity and strength under different corrosive conditions found underground. Initially, ASTM A615 grade 60 steel roof bolts, which are the most commonly used bolt material in the United States, were tested with and without stresses in a simulated underground coal-mining environment for approximately six months. This paper mainly discusses the test system, protocol and system shortcomings, and makes recommendations based on the observations and results.

This paper is presented with particular reference to the findings of the OECD Advisory Conference on tunneling held last July in Washington D. C. A great deal has been said about the Conference in the past few months, but it may be appropriate to review briefly the background and objectives of the Conference to better understand how the mining community can relate its underground excavation problems to the results of the Conference. OBJECTIVES OF THE OECD CONFERENCE The world demand for tunneling (the term tunneling is used here loosely to include almost all forms of underground excavation) is expected to grow at an in- creasing rate. During the decade of the ?70's, the demand is expected to at least double by comparison with the previous decade. Much of this increase in demand will be due to the rapid growth of urbanization around the world. As urban populations grow larger and denser, the conservation of surface land and the quality of the environment become more important. This aspect of the increasing demand poses a difficult challenge to those who must plan and implement urban development.

If the primary purpose of a control system is to assure a fixed-quality product at maximum yield, the real issue involved in control of the fine coal cleaning circuit in a plant is to demonstrate that control is technically feasible and economically beneficial . This paper suggests that it is not easy to do so in most cases. Fine coal, defined here as the 28 mesh x 0 fraction of the plant feed, is generally cleaned using a combination of hydrocyclones and flotation. Both of these processes are relatively insensitive to changes in operating variables. Further, the fines fraction general 1 y forms no more than 20% of the plant feed and, at times, is as low as 10%. The instruments to measure flow rates, densities, and product qua1ity (ash, sulfur, etc.) are not sufficiently accurate to allow effective responses to changing state variables and product quality. It is sufficient to run the fine coal circuits at maximum recovery, and the control of product quality and optimization of yield should be achieved by controlling the coarse coal circuits and measuring the quality of the entire clean coal leaving the plant. This contention is made with particular reference to U.S. plants cleaning coal for the utility industry and should be viewed in this context only. It is explicitly admitted that this strategy is mathematically non-optimal in the sense that all size fractions are not necessarily cleaned at equal elementary ash, and would result in a loss of yield. However, under the conditions of conventional coal cleaning practice, this is a sensible approach.

Roof bolting has been widely used in hard rock underground mines for its many advantages. In this paper, the applicability of roof bolts to mine openings in frozen ground and effects of bolts on the stability of the openings are presented. A comprehensive finite element program ABAQUS, was used to analyze the temperature distribution, the stress field, and the displacement field around a mine opening. Openings supported by roof bolts and unsupported were analyzed. The thermal and mechanical processes were treated as a quasi-coupled problem, with the thermal analyses being conducted first, followed by the mechanical analyses in each case. For the opening under consideration with a roof area of 15 m2, five to seven roof bolts are appropriate. When the number of bolts are less than five, the displacement within the ground can be improved only locally.

In October, 1990, a fire started in a large underground coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. During fire-fighting activities, an explosion occurred and all personnel were evacuated. Safe re-entry into the mine was not possible and the mine was sealed. Recovery efforts began in January, 1991 and continued until March, 1991, when permanent underground seals were installed between the fire area and the mine openings. This paper describes an extensive atmospheric monitoring program conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center (PS&HTC) including the analysis of mine fire gases, natural ventilation, fan pressure and air quantity distribution.

"In this paper, a case study from Çayeli Bakir Isletmeleri A.S. (Rize, Turkey) about the selective flotation of copper minerals from sphalerite is discussed. Çayeli Cu-Zn Sulfide Ore contains different ore types, such as yellow ore, clastic ore, bornite-clastic ore, bornite-yellow ore, and black ore. For some of these ore types, selective flotation of copper and zinc is very difficult presumably due to presence of secondary copper minerals such as bornite, chalcocite and covellite, and also surface oxidation. These factors affect Cu-Zn selectivity due to activation of sphalerite particles in the ore during the process. The main objective of this work was to improve Cu-Zn selectivity by optimization of the pulp chemistry for different ore types of Çayeli ore. After preliminary flotation tests investigating effects of different chemical conditions, a plant survey was performed to determine the plant performance and sources of the problems when problematic bornite-clastic ore is treated in the plant. Various chemical conditions are tested in the laboratory scale test for better depression of sphalerite in copper flotation circuit. Combination of Na2S+ZnSO4+MBS was found to be the most effective depressant scheme. INTRODUCTION Ore variability is one of the most important factors affecting performance of a process plant both in short and long term planning. The geometallurgical modelling becomes a common tool to determine ore variability problems and develop the most efficient solution during life of mine (1, 2). Flowsheet design and equipment selection and sizing are usually done based on the results of ore variability test works. However, in some cases ore variability may not be foreseen during the design stage and therefore the solutions should be developed based on the existing flowsheet and equipment in the plant. In this situation, ore characterisation, problem statement and diagnostic testing should be applied step by step. The problem could be due to changing feed grade, mineralogical characteristics, grindability and surface characteristics when flotation is involved. The variability in feed grade with fixed mineralogy can be handled with relatively simple modifications (i.e. adjusting throughput or equipment capacity) in the plant. Variability in ore mineralogy is the most complex and difficult problem to tackle. Because, mineralogical variations could bring variations in mineral composition, texture and liberation. These variations can potentially lead to the variations in grindability of the ore and flotation behaviour. Variations in grindability are usually managed by optimization of operational parameters in grinding circuit, as it would be costly to replace the existing equipment in the circuit (3). The variations in flotation behaviour are mainly due to variations in mineral types and distribution, texture and surface oxidation. One or all of these factors could be observed in a flotation operation. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation both in plant and lab scale should be conducted for definition of source of the problem. The testwork to solve the problem and retrieve the performance is planned and conducted depending on the source of the problem (4, 5)."

"The Sangan iron-ore mines (SIOM) in Iran are located in a remote area, near the Afghanistan border. The deposit of SIOM is containing a geological resource of 1.2 billion tons of mostly magnetite with a Fe grade ranging from 27 to 61 %. The Iranian government plans a stepwise development of SIOM in cooperation with private companies to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. Sustainable development (SD) is an influential ethical concept in mining all around the world. However, a successful realization of a SD is not possible without a foundation on the core values and regarding the specific circumstances of the individual mining country. This paper introduces SIOM and describes SD activities undertaken during its development. From the early stages, these activities have been realized to secure the acceptance of the stakeholders in the region. To evaluate their effects, indicators could be filtered as the ones with the highest priority for the stakeholders. Moreover Islamic values and Iranian regulations and their influences on SIOM have been analyzed. Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral rich countries (1). In accordance with the statistics published by Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), there were 5.316 active mines and 84.922 employees in the whole country in 2012-13 (2) and according to the statistics published by Central Bank of Iran (CBI) in 2011 the share of this sector in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country was 1.2 per cent (3). Sangan Iron Ore Mines (SIOM) The deposit of SIOM is one of the largest iron-ore deposits in Iran, also considered to be one of the Middle East’s richest deposits, which contains a total geological resource of 1.2 billion tons of mostly magnetite with a Fe grade ranging from 27 to 61%. It is located 300 km southeast from Mashhad, the capital of Khorasan-e-Razavi Province, and 18 km northeast of Sangan town, in Khaf County, at latitude N34°24’, longitude E60°16’ in the north-eastern Khorasan-e-Razavi Province, 30 km west of the Afghanistan border (4) (Figure 1). SIOM is owned by the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization (IMIDRO). IMIDRO intends to develop an open pit mine complex and supporting facilities in SIOM for the production of about 20 Mtpy of iron oxide concentrate and pellets in four developing phases (5)."

An underground limestone mine in eastern Ohio was experiencing significant floor heave and roof falls, attributed to high horizontal stresses. Areas of the mine showing floor heave were monitored with roof-to-floor extensometers and photogrammetry surveys to determine the rate and magnitude of heave. Extensometer data were recorded hourly at four locations across adjacent entries while photogrammetry surveys of the floor were performed at the same locations every two to five weeks. A final survey was performed using an I-Site 8200 laser scanner. Following instrumentation, floor heave up to 10.1 cm (4 in.) was measured by the extensometers, photogrammetric reconstructions and laser scanner over a six-month period. The extensometers were biased by the location where they were placed, failing to consistently capture the location and extent of floor heave and cracking. The photogrammetry surveys were not precise enough to capture small magnitude movements. Mining in the area was halted and within several months the floor movement and incidence of roof falls were significantly lessened.

The existence of a critical size buildup in an autogenous or SAG mill can be predicted from proper examination of drill core and ore samples. Methods of dealing with such critical size in a primary mill are reviewed in the context of ore properties, whether or not pilot plant-scale testwork has been conducted, and also with respect to the design of new plants or the retrofitting of existing operations. The implications of not planning for pebble crushing in situations where it is appropriate are discussed.

Research in the field of mining safety and health in the United States plays an important part in protecting the lives of miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program conducts surveillance, studies and developmental work aimed at improving the safety and health of miners. With recent reviews of the Mining Program by the National Academy of Sciences and the Mining Program response (NIOSH, 2008), the importance of setting goals, conducting high quality engineering and scientific research and evaluating the outputs, outcomes, relevance and impacts of these projects has been reemphasized. Surveillance of reported injuries is a first step in deciding on research directions and in designing specific projects. Groups of injuries often share features and attributes that suggest common causes and may respond to similar preventive efforts. Identifying groups of injuries also serves to prioritize intervention efforts. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Accident and Injury database (MSHA, 2008) provides individual case reports of mining injuries, illnesses and certain no-injury accidents (events such as roof falls that stop mine production or miners’ activities for more than one hour). This database is an indispensable resource for researchers and stakeholders needing information on the statistics of these events. From an epidemiological perspective, research projects target groups of miners at risk due to specific patterns of work, equipment, mine settings and the management of safety and health in their mines. Incidence rates are provided by the MSHA data for selected variables, such as surface/underground location, standard industrial classification and state. While incidence rates are the preferred measure for all variables, denominators are not typically available; for example, to more clearly understand the data about injury by occupational type, it would be necessary to conduct demographic surveys. A current survey of the demographics of the mining industry should be complete by 2010, which will allow incidence rates to be developed for a number of variables such as age, occupation and experience. This survey will provide the first update of its kind since the first survey was conducted in 1985. This report describes an alternative method of analyzing and presenting MSHA data for the purpose of identifying high-cost, high-severity injuries and illnesses. Researchers at the NIOSH Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) developed programs to find the top five most frequent accident classes, natures of injury, types of accidents and other selected variables from the MSHA database. Studying these variables gives a cross-sectional snapshot of the most frequent groups of injuries within a commodity, regional group or time period, and allows researchers to quickly understand developing patterns for new research projects. The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.4 km (6.5 mi) long, 14.4 m (47.5 ft)bored tunnel that will run under the City of Niagara Falls from the Upper Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck Power Station. The completed project will enhance the capacity of the Sir Adam Beck Power Station by adding 500 m3 (17,657 ft3) of water per second through the tunnel. The paper describes the project in which the world’s largest hard rock TBM at14.4 m (47.5 ft) in diameter is being used to excavate the tunnel. Features of the project include the use of a High Performance (HP) Main Beam TBM, state-of-the-art ground support and tunnel logistics systems. A continuous conveyor is used for muck transport from the TBM to the disposal area. The paper will also discuss the optimization of the TBM system as the tunnel advances through the varying geology. In June 2004 the Ontario Government announced that Ontario Power Generation(OPG) had been given approval to proceed with the third tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls—the first two tunnels were constructed in the 1950s using drill and blast techniques. The third tunnel, appropriately named The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP), consists of a 10.4 km (6.5 mi) long TBM-bored, concrete-lined tunnel with a finished diameter of 12.5 m (41.1 ft). In August 2005, OPG announced the selection of Strabag AG of Austria, one of the largest construction companies in Europe, as the contractor to build the NTP Project at a price of CAN $600 million. In September 2005, Strabag A.G. selected The Robbins Company of Solon, Ohio to design, manufacture and deliver a new 14.4 m (47.5 ft) diameter High Performance state-of-the-art Main Beam Hard Rock TBM to be used in the excavation of the tunnel. In order to meet the aggressive construction schedule as requested by OPG/Strabag, the TBM needed to be supplied as “ready to bore” within a 12 month period after the contract was awarded to Robbins.

"Refuge alternatives (RA) provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. RA manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and the management of heat that results from the RA occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide generation that is representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current US coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in an RA. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 115 W to 135 W, depending on RA occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 LO2/h/person (0.81 ft3/h/person) and 20 LCO2/h/person (0.71 ft3/h/person), which means the margin of safety is 50% or more when compared to the MSHA requirements. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for the supply of oxygen, the removal of carbon dioxide, and the management of heat that results from the occupants and the mechanical/chemical systems in the RA [1]. These MSHA requirements were based on a standard 70 kg (168 lb) male with an assumed allocation of activity of 80% rest and 20% moderate activity level [2]. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the metabolic heat generation and oxygen and carbon dioxide requirements of miners in an RA based on actual miner size and more realistic RA activity levels based on current RA designs. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and heat generation. To achieve this, researchers took the following steps to estimate the metabolic demands and the associated heat generation, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide production. 1. Characterized the anthropometric characteristics of the miner population. 2. Described the metabolic rate profile of RA occupants. 3. Characterized the maintenance demands of RAs. 4. Summarized oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal volumes. ANTHROPOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF MINERS The weight, height, and age distributions of the adult male populations are summarized in Table 1. For each data set, the reported mean and standard deviation are provided. The 95th percentile (%ile) value for height and weight for each population was the mean plus 1.64 times the standard deviation."

Surface and underground mining operations are often hindered by unknown tunnels and stopes and the precise locations of adjacent workings. Mine safety and planning are adversely affected especially in previously undermined areas where historical records are incomplete or non-existent. The results of several Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) studies for the detection of known mine tunnels in underground coal; salt, and gold mines are presented. A case study to locate unknown, abandoned mine workings at a surface gold mine successfully located all workings to a depth of 11 meters.

Each year, companies spend millions of dollars on safety training and on safe equipment, money that is generally well spent. Despite that, we still make mistakes. What happens if the mistakes are made not because of inadequate training, but because we are hard-wired to act in a certain way? If you read any of the ?Because of Human Error? text boxes in this document, situations like these may look familiar in your own workplace. ?The issues of risk, health, safety and the environment are getting more attention now than ever before, at all levels of the organization,? said Calvin Price, vice president of Global Health and Safety at LNC-Lavalin Inc., a company with 21,000 workers worldwide. Most would agree with Price that attention to safety is increasing because responsible companies care about their workers and the workers? colleagues, families and communities. However, cynics might say that the safety spotlight is powered by the corporate bottom line. Direct costs created by workplace injuries total $51.8 billion annually and include workers? compensation payments, medical expenses, civil liability damages and litigation expenses. This sum represents a staggering one quarter of each dollar of pretax corporate profits. Indirect costs may run as much as 20 times the direct costs of on-the-job accidents and illnesses. Examples of indirect costs include training replacement employees, investigating the accident and implementing corrective measures, lost productivity, repairing damaged equipment and property, and costs associated with lower employee morale and absenteeism. What?s interesting is that up to 90 percent of incidents are due to human error, not faulty equipment or other factors.

I have been asked to discuss the "Development of the Twin Buttes Mine for Production." This property, which is a large low-grade open pit copper mine about 25 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, was recently brought into production by The Anaconda Company under a long-term lease agreement with the Banner Mining Company. Since the scope of this paper is limited to the subject broadly indicated by its title I will confine discussion of historical, environmental and other general matters to a brief summary sufficient, I hope, to establish a background of those conditions which influenced our approach to the technical and economic problems that faced us at Twin Buttes. The paper deals primarily with our studies and activities related to the solution of these problems and with the resulting engineering and business decisions that were taken - decisions which culminated last September in the initial commercial operation of another major open pit copper producer unique and interesting in several respects.

RADON EXPOSURE AND CARCINOGENIC CELL TRANSFORMATION The highest radiation burden to miners is due to inhalation of radon and its short-lived decay products. The quantification of the risk associated with this radiation burden is complicated by modeldependent lung dosimetry, insufficient accuracy of past human exposure data as well as lacking knowledge about potential synergism of various carcinogens. Nevertheless, it is evident from epidemiological studies of miners that inhalation of elevated levels of radon daughters is correlated with increased lung cancer incidence (UNSCEAR, 1977). The situation is further complicated by the lack of reliable data on the biological variability of the latency period for the development of lung tumor under varying exposure conditions. At present information on variation with age is scarce, however, it is indicated that the excess lung cancer rate for workers exposed to high radon levels is considerably higher, if exposure occurs at ages over 40 years as compared to under 30 years of age (Sevc, Kunz, Placek, 1976). Furthermore, latency period is shorter by 6 - 7 years for smokers exposed to elevated radon levels than for non-smokers (Fry, 1976). Analysis of US- and CSR-uranium miner data revealed that the mean latency period is in the order of about 15 years (Jacobi, 1973). These uncertainties, together with medical diagnostic shortcomings, lead to the dissatisfying situation that at present the detection of radon induced injury of mining personal is primarily the assessment of the endpoint, i.e. radiation induced cancerous transformation of lung cells with typically less than 10% chance for recovery. Therefore it would be advantageous to develop practically applicable diagnostic aids to indicate already early precancerogenic changes of cell characteristics. This would permit the identification of specific population groups at increased risk for the development of lung cancer, thereby increasing the chances of more successful medical treatment. Despite continuous improvements in the reliability of test methods for the diagnosis of cancer cells there is still need for techniques, which enable the detection of transformed cells before the onset of invasion of the host organism. It is generally recognized that the transformation of a cell into a malignant state leads to a change of the cell surface, indicating a correlation between membrane-specific immunological properties and loss of growth control. Surface alterations on cells appear to be responsible in part for the malignant state and are not simply secondary effects of the transformation (Schnebli and Burger, 1973). Furthermore, membranes of cancer cells differ significantly from those of normal cells, particularly, in permeability properties (Rastogi, 1976). In dying cells, proteins, glycoproteins, peptides, aminoacids and their breakdown products are released, which block the permeation of the membrane itself. A mammalian cell can be considered as a 3-phase system (interior, boundary, environment) with the membrane forming a heterogeneous barrier between two subsystems. Under normal circumstances a difference of chemical potential is maintained on both sides of the membrane, causing an ion gradient across and fixed surface charges on the membrane. This results in a membrane resting potential (MRP) between cytoplasm and the bulk medium. It has been shown that MRP is a highly sensitive indicator for cellular reactions due to physical, chemical and biological agents, particularly whenever phenomena of transport and ion gradients as well as permeability are involved (Redmann, 1980). The primary interaction of the agent "ionizing radiation" with any form of living matter occurs at the cellular level. The component with the highest hit probability is the cell membrane. In the study presented MRP-changes of human cells were investigated with simultaneous measurements during irradiation and post-irradiation intervals up to six days. Furthermore, the suitability of MRP-measurements of human cells was tested as an indicator for early changes of cellular properties prior to the histological confirmation of carcinogenic transformation. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lung cells The biological specimen used were cultured human lung cells and human lung biopsy samples. Monolayers of lung fibroblasts (W138) were grown in petridishes using conventional culture techniques. In addition, transformed lung cells (W138SV13, subline 2RA) were used applying similar culture methods. All petridishes were incubated at 37°C and only cells in logarithmic growth phase were used. Freshly excised lung biopsy samples were obtained from randomly selected male and female patients (20 cases), where suspected or unclear malignancies were indicated by clinical or X-ray observations. At the time of sampling 80 % of the patients were or had been smokers in the past. The samples were taken by means of a stiff bronchoscope introduced into the trachea under local anasthesia with 1 % Novesinsolution (preparation with Atropin and Pantopen). This permitted the observation of both main bronchi down to the segmental bronchials. From each patient two tissue samples were excised from the mucusepithelial layer under visual control with fiber optics and transferred immediately into 1 % NaClsolution. In September of 1988, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) published final regulations that effect owners and operators of underground storage tanks (USTs). These regulation include stringent technical requirements for owners and operators of USTs containing petroleum and certain hazardous substances. The technical requirements effect both new (those installed after December 1988) and existing USTs and include notification; performance and operating standards; release detection, reporting, investigation; release response and corrective action; and closure requirements for out-of-service USTs. The USEPA also published final regulations regarding financial responsibility requirements for owners or operators of petroleum USTs in October of 1988. These regulations require owners or operators of petroleum USTs to demonstrate financial responsibility for the costs of corrective action and compensating third parties for bodily injury or property damage caused by releases from petroleum USTs. Newmont Gold Company's Mill No. 4 is located along the Carlin trend, about 25 miles North of Carlin, Nevada. The plant consists of a primary grinding circuit using a 7.2 m (22 ft) diameter by 2.6 m (8 ft) long semi-autogenous mill along with a 2.3 m (7 ft) diameter cone crusher. Secondary grinding is performed in a 4.8 m (14.5 ft) diameter by 9.2 m (28 ft) long overflow ball mill in closed circuit with a set of 66 cm (26 in) diameter cyclones. The ground product is fed to a typical carbon-in-leach gold leach circuit. The grinding/crushing circuit operation and control scheme are the topics of this paper.
