Allis-Chalmers has combined a new heat transfer device, called the ROLLER GRATE, with a unique processing scheme, resulting in the ROLLER GRATE Oil Shale Processing System of Allis-Chalmers. In order to test both the process and the equipment, a batch Process Development Unit (PDU) ROLLER GRATE retort was designed and built. This unit vas designed with the flexibility to process shale over a wide range of test conditions in order to demonstrate the attributes of the oil-shale processing system. Instrumentation on the PDU and extensive sampling of the effluent streams permitted the PDU test data to be used in the design and scale-up of the process. Over 30 tests have been conducted with Colorado shale, and over 25 tests have been run with an Indiana shale. In addition, rests have been run with California and Utah tar sands.

"Following a successful solvent extraction (SX) pilot plant demonstration in 2016, CYANEX® 600 has been used commercially to recover molybdenum from concentrate leach liquor since March 2017. Consistent with the piloting results, the commercial plant has achieved expected molybdenum recovery, a significant reduction in base consumption, and a step-change improvement in physical performance. This paper highlights the optimization activities and plant performance from startup through normal operation. INTRODUCTION Historically, tertiary amines have been the most commonly used extractant for molybdenum and rhenium recovery. Tertiary amines utilize a protonation of the ligand combined with an anion exchange mechanism as proposed in equations (1-2). R3N + H+ ???R3NH + (1) 4R3NH+ + Mo8O264- ???(R3NH+)4Mo8O264- (2) In addition to the transfer of Mo and Re, the amine transfers acid and other anions to the strip liquor. The undesirable transfer of other species increases base consumption during stripping, impacting operating costs. Additionally, lower solubility of molybdenum-amine complexes create operational challenges, resulting in diminished physical performance. The presence of colloidal Si in concentrate leach liquors and the formation of Pickering Emulsions adds to the physical plant performance challenges with the amine extractant. CYANEX® 600, a phosphinic acid-based extractant, uses a cation exchange mechanism proposed by equation (3). 2(H2R2) + MoO22+ ??(HR2)2MoO2 + 2H+ (3) The cationic exchange mechanism eliminates chemical transfer of acid and other anionic impurities and avoids some of the physical challenges of the amine extractant (emulsion and 3rd phase formation). In addition, the reagent offers high selectivity for Mo over Re, which may be desirable in certain moly pressure oxidation (POX) flowsheets. Alkali base (ammonium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, etc.) is used for molybdenum stripping. Therefore, reduction or elimination of chemical acid transfer from extract can significantly reduce base consumption in strip. Extensive laboratory and pilot plant testing was completed to evaluate the use of CYANEX® 600 for molybdenum recovery at Freeport-McMoRan’s Bagdad operation. The test work and pilot demonstration confirmed a reduction in base consumption along with improved selectivity. In addition, the evaluation highlighted a step-change improvement in physical performance over the incumbent amine extractant. The decision was made to convert the commercial operation to CYANEX® 600 in March 2017."

The pit slope angle dictates the economics as much as the depth of the pit. Steeper slope provides more ore reserves, at the same time, the steeper slope presents higher probability of instability and associated maintenance problems. While large open pit mines mostly belonged to nonferrous metals in the past, other mines are becoming deeper as the mine economics permits deeper mine operations, Such minerals include coal, uranium, phosphate, and others. There are some basic differences between an open pit slope and slopes that are encountered in usual civil engineering work such as dam embankments and highway cuts (Figure 1). The stability of the civil engineering slope changes continuously with time due to ground-water movements, weathering, etc. But the stability of the open pit slope (Figure 2) changes more drastically day-to-day or even hour-to-hour, These changes occur because not only is the slope geometry being continuously changed by the mining operation, but also different geology and geologic structures are being exposed on the slope. Even when a particular slope area is not presently being mined, excavation in adjacent areas can affect the general condition of that slope area. A pit will experience some slope failures during its life.

The Trombetas bauxite deposits were discovered by ALLAN, as from the original work of the geologists Drs. E. E. GREIG and 3.A. STAARGAARD on the axis of the Amazon river, between Manaus and Santarem - (see fig. 1). With research licences obtained in 1965 by the SANTA RITA BAUXITA - a subsidiary of ALAN a group of Brazilian geologists, under the supervision of IGOR MOUSASTICOUSHVILLY, begins researches on the areas of Parintins, Juruti and Mathias with unsatisfactory results. In 1966, photographs obtained from the US Air Force and the Brazilian Oil Company PETROBRAS -, covering an Amazon region between Parintins, Santarem and north of Trombetas river, permitted the identification of a great number of plateaux between the Nhamunda and the Trombetas rivers. Based on this information, a research group has worked intensively from 1966 to 1967 allowing the discovery of the trihydrated bauxite in a quite large area. After five years of intense work and analysis of approximately 56.000 samples, near 500 million of tonnes of bauxite are evaluated on the several plateaux of the, area, thus insuring the commercial exploration of these deposits. Such discovery places Brazil among the detainers of the main bauxite stocks of the world and as a potential exporter.

The issue of regulating non-asbestiform varieties of the amphiboles actinolite, tremo1ite, and anthophyllite to the same degree as asbestos has been studied in detail by the National Stone Association. The ramifications of such a regulation, and the over simplistic regulatory definition of a fiber, are enormous not only for the aggregate industry and its users, but also for the nation. Evaluation of the health, geological, mineralogical, technical, economic and legal issues do not support an "asbestos-like" regulation of non-asbestiform minerals. The adverse consequences of regulating non-asbestiform varieties of actinolite, tremolite and anthophyllite like asbestos would be magnified many times if a similar standard for generic mineral fibers were promulgated.

Type I and II carbonaceous chondrites contain granules of the high boiling point metals W, Re, Mo, Ir and Os. Spectra of sunlight reflected from asteroids, when compared with those of meteorites and specific minerals, provide a rough classification and guide to sources of precious platin-group metals.

The study investigates SO2 leaching of low-grade ferruginous manganese ores to selectively recover manganese as MnSO4 and produce battery-grade electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD). The effects of leaching parameters (duration, temperature, SO2 flow rate) on Mn recovery were studied. Under optimum conditions, 97.9% Mn recovery was achieved. The MnSO4 leach liquor was purified and used for electrowinning EMD with 88.01% purity and battery-active γ structure.

Prior to 1971, there were several clinical trials to evaluate programs for early detection of lung cancer. Among these, the Philadelphia Pulmonary Neoplasm Research Project,(3) the Veterans Administration Study published by Lilienfeld,(7) and the controlled trial of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan showed an overall five year survival rate of 8% for newly detected cases (the same as the national statistic for unscreened patients). In 1971, the National Cancer Institute initiated three randomized, controlled mortality studies using lung cancer screening of persons at high risk (male smokers over 45 years old). The studies are being conducted at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The studies have slightly different designs in the combination of sputum cytology and chest x-rays. At the Mayo Clinic the study group is offered screening with sputum cytology and chest x-rays every four months, whereas the control group is advised to have an x-ray and cytology every year. No reminders are sent, and it is believed that only about 20% of the control group is screened. At Johns Hopkins and Memorial, both experimental and control groups are offered annual chest x-rays. The experimental group is additionally offered sputum cytology every four months.(5) At present all of the programs show that screening can detect cancers that are undetectible by other means. However, at this time mortality rates in the control and experimental groups are not significantly different in any of the three studies. OUR PROGRAM Our clinic is located in Grants, New Mexico and we provide most of the pre-employment physical examinations for the mines operating in the Grants area (Kerr McGee Nuclear, Homestake Mining, United Nuclear, Western Nuclear, and Ranchers). In the examinations, we obtain the previous mining history of the worker, a chest x-ray, a sample of sputum for cytological examination, and a blood sample. We also provide routine annual physical examinations of the workers, with special interest in the detection of bronchogenic carcinoma. In the early seventies, we did not have a definite surveillance program. We did not know whether we should have a program like the one started at Memorial or like the one started at the Mayo Clinic. After long consideration, we decided to have a program that does not demand a sputum cytology and chest x-ray every four months, but that allows as many chest x-rays and sputum cytologies as needed to diagnose lung cancer as early as possible. We believe that, if a screening method for cancer is to be optimally effective, it must detect the process at stages early enough for curative therapy. We order a test depending on the age of the miner, the race, the mining history, the smoking history, the radiation exposure levels, and the results of the previous chest x-ray and sputum cytology. With the help of the computer, we have a list of all the miners who should be watched closely because of age, race, mining history, smoking history, radiation exposure, etc. Examination of the miners is performed at our clinic, where all the records are kept. The sputum is collected there but examined in Grand Junction, Colorado, by Dr. Geno Saccomanno. There are two ways to collect sputum. The best way is to collect three consecutive morning samples. For this, we need the cooperation of the miners. They have to follow these instructions and mail the bottle containing the sample to Grand Junction. "Instructions for obtaining a good cough specimen" The enclosed plastic bottle contains a preservative solution, so do not empty out the liquid in it. When you go to bed, place the plastic bottle at your bedside where it will be handy in the morning. When you first get up in the morning (before breakfast) try to cough up some "phlegm" from deep in your chest, and spit it into the liquid in the bottle. Try coughing several times. If you have difficulty coughing, try inhaling deeply the steam from a teakettle (or home-type inhalator). Keep the amount of saliva (ordinary spit) that you put into the bottle along with the cough specimen as small as possible. Do not collect the "phlegm" or mucous that comes from the back of your nose. Put the cap back on the bottle, and shake it vigorously for two minutes. If the amount of material you have coughed up is quite small, then keep the bottle at your bedside for three or four days, and each morning try to add another cough specimen. After obtaining your cough specimen, repack the bottle in the mailing container, and attach the enclosed mailing label. It does not require any postage stamps. Unfortunately, some miners "forget" to mail the sample and end up with an incomplete physical examination. To avoid this some companies, like Homestake, request that we obtain the sample in our clinic by forcing cough and expectorant with a nebulizer machine. This method does not give as good a sputum sample as the previous one, but we do get a sputum sample for every miner. "Slag density is a significant factor in determining the process efficiency of the electroslag remelting (ESR) process, where calcium fluoride (CaF2)-based slag is formed synthetically to refine metal ingots. Although there are some former studies investigating the density of CaF2-containing slags, the prediction models focusing on them are applicable only to some specific systems. The present study aims to build a model to predict density for a wide range of CaF2-containing ESR slags. To investigate density for various slag compositions, CaF2-Al2O3-based and CaF2-Al2O3-CaO-based slag compositions were prepared. Additionally, some minor constituents like FeO, MgO and MnO were added to a 5:3:2 CaF2-Al2O3-CaO slag in order to investigate the effects of these constituents on the slag. The volumes of the prepared slags were measured in a tube furnace at 1450-1550 °C using the sessile drop technique, and their densities were calculated. The results showed that for the slags, density is related to optical basicity, and therefore a prediction model based on an Arrhenius equation was built. The model was tested with data from literature, and its limitations and validity are discussed.IntroductionThe electroslag remelting (ESR) process is a refining method in which a metal ingot is remelted under a synthetic slag. These synthetic ESR slags are mainly composed of calcium fluoride (CaF2), calcium oxide (CaO) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Other constituents like iron oxide (FeO), magnesium oxide (MgO), manganese oxide (MnO) and chromium oxide (Cr2O3) are added to this system in relatively low amounts, according to the type of steel ingot to be refined. The prediction of slag properties, such as electrical conductivity, viscosity and density, is crucial for the selection of the synthetic slag in order to obtain the required process parameters, like temperature, the passing time of the molten metal droplet through the slag, and metal-slag separation (Akbari, Reitz and Friedrich, 2009; Hara and Ogino, 1981; Mattar, El-Faramawy and Fathy, 2002; Mehrabi, Rahimipour and Shokuhfar, 2005; Presoly, Korp and Schneider, 2008).As slag density affects metal-slag separation in the ESR process, predicting the density of an ESR slag is important for appropriate refining and improved product quality. Although there are many studies investigating the density of slags (Akbari, Reitz and Friedrich, 2009; Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Hara and Ogino, 1981; Matsushita, 2011; Mills and Keene, 1987, 1981; Seetharaman et al., 2013; Shu, 2007; Shu and Chou, 2013; Sikora and Zielinski, 1974; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010), the prediction models built are generally valid for oxide-containing slags (Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Bottinga and Weill, 1970; Mills and Keene, 1987; Seetharaman et al., 2013; Shu, 2007; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010). These models were built on either the molar volumes of the constituents (Bottinga and Weill, 1970; Mills and Keene, 1987) or the thermodynamically calculated enthalpy or free energy of mixing, which can be applied to a system containing constituents sharing an ion, such as an O- ion for oxide systems (Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Hillert, 1980; Persson et al., 2007). Some recent studies modeled the density of some oxide slags on their optical basicity (Shu, 2007; Shu and Chou, 2013; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010)."

As market conditions become more competitive, U.S. coal producers are faced with the increasing need to find methods of lowering production costs in their operations. One area worthy of investigation is the additional recovery of fine coal that is normally discarded in the preparation plant waste stream. United Coal Company is currently assessing the capability of the Deister Flotaire, a new application of a column flotation cell, to recover additional, saleable coal from preparation plant waste. This paper presents the technical data obtained to date. Work with a 0.76 m (30 inch) diameter cell installed in a plant shows considerable coal recovery is possible from a nominal 0.595 run (28 mesh) X 0 refuse stream.

The paper describes ground improvements, the actual excavation, and also the final lining works. Schedule and sequencing restrictions provided some unique challenges which had to be considered when designing and constructing these mostly short, but essential portions of the project

Use has been made of several theoretical models to predict radiation levels in underground uranium mines. The models used are the Evans model, the Thomas-Epps mine model, the isolated mine model, the mine tunnel with no air flow and the mine tunnel with air flow (Beckman and Holub). Calculations based on the above models have been extended to include thoron gas and its progeny, a common occurrence in some Canadian uranium mines. Theoretical predictions include radon and thoron progenies WLs and concentrations, and some ratios of great practical interest. The main differences between the models are pointed out and comparison is made with experimental data gathered during the last three years in several Canadian underground uranium mines.

Dust control methods are practiced throughout the mining industry in order to protect the health and safety of its workers, the integrity of the environment, and to guard against the loss of valuable product. The use of water is often the best and most economical method of controlling dust. Increasingly, chemical agents are being chosen over more traditional mechanical means of controlling dust. Some chemicals are used alone, and many are used to enhance the dust controlling properties of water. This paper describes the various types of chemicals available and their applicability to specific problems encountered by industry.

By the middle of 1989 Inco will have applied its patented cyanide removal technology to seventeen commercial operations. Removal of cyanide from CIL slurry tailings is applied at Equity Silver and Inco's new 1.200 mtpd mill at Inco/Golden Knight. Detoxification of CIP tailings is carried out by Colosseum California (3.600 mtpd), Canamax's Ketza River (360 mtpd) and Westmin's Silbak Premier (2000 tpd) operations. Repulped tailings from Merrill-Crowe flowsheets are treated at Total Erikson's Mount Skukum (300 mtpd) and Skyline's Johnny Mountain (200 mtpd) mills and barren bleed at Inco/Queenston's McBean mill (500 mtpd). Lynngold's MacLellan mill (1800 mtpd) and ERG (40.000 mtpd) treat pond supernatant water. Plating shop cyanide effluents are decyanized at Kuntz Electroplating and two other plating shops in Ontario. Details regarding some of the above operations are given. Operating and capital cost estimates for various treatment options are discussed.

Around the beginning of the 20th Century, annual aggregate production in the United States amounted to about 50 million short tons. Today annual aggregate production is nearly 2.5 billion tons. Over a third of the States in the country produce more aggregate than the Nation did at the turn of the century. I would like to describe some of the historical events that allowed this nearly 50 fold increase in aggregate production. You might wonder why I want to talk about history. Some of our best ideas lie buried in the past, waiting to be rediscovered in the present. Almost every issue that the aggregate industry experiences today has been recognized for at least a decade; many of those issues have been recognized for a half a century; and a few of them have been recognized for nearly a century. The main reason for this article is to save the past from the forgetful indifference of the present-to faithfully preserve the past, to illustrate the insights of our predecessors, and to demonstrate how little of what we know today is really new.

Silicon dioxide, silica, is the most common oxide in the earth' s crust. The health effects of silicon dioxide dust have been known since Biblical times. Agricola's book, published in the mid 1500's on occupational medicine, described a lung disease that afflicted miners. He observed a disease in miners that caused shortness of breath, coughing and wasting. Add fever, chest pains and fatigue and we have the current symptom complex of silicosis. As we approached the 21stcentury, the Labor Department began an aggressive campaign to combat silicosis-a preventable disease. Unfortunately, many publications do not clearly differentiate the polymorphs of silica known to mineralogists. Crystalline silica, i.e., alpha quartz, tridymite and cristobalite need to be considered differently from the amorphous forms of silica. Freshly fractured surfaces of the silica and host specific responses will be examined. Recent research focuses on the biologic interactions of free radicals generated by mineral particles. This results in cell injury and DNA damage, in turn leading to fibrogenesis and possibly carcinogenesis. In addition to particle-cell interactions, emphasis is given to lung defense mechanisms.

The wear behaviors of grinding media with different chemical compositions and microstructures in wet grinding of a quartz-pyrrhotite mixture was investigated under various environments. The marked ball wear tests showed that the wear rate could be minimized by a suitable combination of martensite and ferrite within the same ball. A ball composed solely of hard martensite exhibited increased wear under an oxygen environment, while balls composed of both soft ferrite together with hard martensite exhibited decreased wear due presumably to the difference in their passivation? behaviors. The galvanic interactions between the two phases as well as among these phases and an electroactive mineral were investigated through electrochemical measurements under abrasive conditions in a slurry. The rates of formation of passive films controlled the corrosion currents of the high chromium steel media. Corrosive wear and its effect on flotation are discussed using the passivation kinetics model thereby developed.
