Very fine wet sizing of minerals such as kaolin, precipitated calcium carbonate, lime milk, and clay slip is a difficult process to achieve using standard vibrating screens. With particle sizes ranging in the sub-microns combined with the agglomerating tendencies of certain materials, screen blinding becomes a serious issue. Sizetec, Inc. has developed an innovative screening equipment to help solve this problem. The High Performer Screen uses powerful linear vibrations to help break apart agglomerated particles and prevent screen blinding. Optionally fitted with the Air Explosion Screen Cleaning System, compressed air can be periodically injected into the screen underflow chamber to clean the screen surface without the use of water sprays. This paper highlights some of the key features of the Sizetec High Performer Screen and describes typical performance that can be expected based on results from various trials conducted in the kaolin industries.

One of the purest gypsum deposits in the United States is located in northwest Oklahoma about 90 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. Gypsum beds of the Blaine Formation (Permian) are each 10 to 15 feet thick and 97 to 99 percent pure; they are being quarried by four companies in the area. Most of the stone mined by U.S. Gypsum Company is calcined for the manufacturing of wallboard and special plasters, but some of the crude gypsum is marketed for cement manufacture and for use as soil conditioner. Reclamation of the mined lands at Southard, Oklahoma, has been carried out since 1968, and the company is now involved in a cooperative program of land revegetation to aid in erosion control, provide for wildlife, and for beautification.

The run-of-mine coals in the U.S. being fed to coal cleaning plants have become increasingly finer due to the adoption of modern, mechanized mining methods, and economics are dictating that finer fractions, as well as the coarser fractions, be cleaned. Traditional dewatering methods (vacuum disc filters and centrifuges) are proving inadequate for preparing fine refuse for disposal or fine coal product for downstream handling. The Electric Power Research Institute has been supporting research into the nature and limitations of mechanical dewatering, and novel ways of improving it. The efficiency of various silicone-based chemicals at aiding dewatering was investigated, and it was shown that the final moisture content of hydrophilic coals after vacuum Filtration could be reduced by 1 to 5% with up to 40% increase in filtration rate by addition of one of several of these silicones. EPRI also has an on-going program at its Coal Cleaning Test Facility to investigate the performance of the Larox pressure filter in comparison with that of the disc filter and solid bowl centrifuge. While improvements to the dewatering performance currently being obtained in existing operating plants by such means are achieveable, a fundamental study has shown that, regardless of changes in operating conditions, there may be a limit to the lowest cake moisture content attainable by mechanical dewatering of a given sample of coal fines. Determination of this limit for a specific coal would be useful in designing facilities to dry and handle it.

Following the first longwall excavation at a deep-cover gas well site, the pre-mining modeling prediction of longwallinduced casing deformations in the fully cemented production casing were in excellent agreement with post-mining Caliper survey results. However, after second panel mining, the post-mining Caliper survey revealed a large plastic deformation near the top of the Pittsburgh Seam. The focus of this paper is to identify the possible cause of such an anomalous deformation. Very high longwall-induced casing stress near a thick claystone layer at 23 feet above the Pittsburgh seam horizon was identified as the primary cause. Leaving the production casing uncemented or using softer cementing material between intermediate and production casings is identified as the best practice.

INTRODUCTION Radioactive deposits were observed in 1972 in some of the Upper Silesian coal mines. They were located mainly in the drains in galeries and on the inside surfaces of water pipes. They also caused some problems by accumulating in water pumps. It has been postulated that the deposits are produced by natural radioactive waters seeping from the rocks. Investigations were initiated to answer the following questions: - What is the composition and the amount of radioactivity in the deposits? - What radioisotopes are present in the water? - How are the radioactive deposits formed? - Do the radioactive waters also occur in other mines? - How does the radioactivity of the water depend on chemical composition? - What is the origin of the radioactive water? - Does the water and the deposits cause radiation hazards for miners? -How can the radiation hazard be reduced? METHODS OF MEASUREMENT Determination of Radium Isotopes in Water The commonly used methods of radium determination in water are either based on measurements of the radioactivity of 222Rn which is in equilibrium with 226Ra, or on the detection of alpha particles of the radium radioisotopes after chemical separation of radium from the water sample. The method based on radon activity measurements is very sensitive and does not require any chemical Separation, but it can be used for determination of 226Ra from the uranium series only, because the thorium daughter 220Rn has too short a half-life (55s to yield the required accuracy. The method developed by Goldin, 1961 [2] involved alpha-particle measurements in thin layers of RaS04 and BaS04 separated from the water. This method is not convenient for saline water and water with high barium concentration because the amount of barium carrier in this case is too large to obtain a thin layer of precipitate with sufficient activity. The Upper Silesian carboniferous waters are often saline with high barium content, so the method described by Goldin was not convenient for this case and it was necessary to change the detection system and modify the chemical preparation. The procedure developed by the authors for the determination of radium isotopes in water was as follows: - Depending on the Ba2+ content and the required sensitivity of measurement, a water sample of 200 cm3 to 3 dm3 was taken. - 10 cm3 of 0.25 M citric acid and 5 cm3 15M ammonia was added to form complex Ba2+ ions and avoid the immediate precipitation of BaSO4. (This was repeated as long as the addition of BaC12 did not form a precipitate.) - 1 cm3 of 1N solution of Pb(N03)2 as a carrier for radioactive isotopes of lead and 10 cm3 of 0.1 N BaC12 as a carrier for radium were added. - The sample was heated to the boiling point and the precipitation of RaS04, BaSO4 and PbS04 with 50% H2SO4 was carried out. - After several hours the sample was centrifuged and the precipitate was purified by washing with nitric acid and distilled water. - The precipitate was then redisolved in 20 cm3 0.125 M Na2EDTA and 3 cm3 6M ammonia and reprecipitated from the solution by dropwise addition of acetic acid to d pH of 4.5. At this value of pH, precipitation occurs only for the barium and radium sulfates, while lead and all other radioactive elements remain in the solution. The date and time of deposit precipitation was recorded. - The final barium-radium sulfate mixture was washed with distilled water and transferred to standard measurement vials. - Each vial containing a deposit had 6 cm3 of distilled water added and was then shaken vigorously. 12 cm3 of liquid gelling scintillator (INSTA-GEL UNISOLV-1 type) was then added and the vi 1 was shaken again. After a while the scintillator turns into a milky gel in which the deposit is uniformly distributed. - The standard sample of 226Ra was prepared in the same way. - The activity of the samples was measured using a liquid scintillation spectrometer. (In this case the TRICARB 3320 produced by Packard Instruments, was used). Tests run on standard radium solutions provided by Amersham Radiochemical Centre indicated that this method of measurement enables one to achieve an efficiency of almost 100% (within measurement error). For alpha particles no quenching effect was observed for the BaS04 concentration in the range up to 80 mg of BaS04 per 1 cm3 of liquid scintillator coctail (Fig. 1). This paper presents the details of the Kramer tunnel project in the Federal State of Bavaria, Germany. This road tunnel, which has been under construction since December 2019, is the key component of the western bypass of the town of GarmischPartenkirchen. Once completed, it will relieve the town’s central district from enormous volumes of traffic. The contractor is the joint venture named ARGE Kramertunnel consisting of BeMo Tunnelling and Subterra. The whole project will be completed and handed over to the project owner, Staatliches Bauamt Weilheim, in 2023. The opening of the entire bypass section including the tunnel to traffic is planned for 2024. The tunnel, with a total length of 3,609 m (2.24 miles) and an estimated cost of EUR 178 million (incl. VAT), is designed as a single-tube, double-lane structure with one traffic lane for each direction of travel. The safety issue that exists for single-tube tunnels is solved by a parallel escape tunnel passable for vehicles. All tunnels and ducts are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). In order to reduce the geological risk for the owner, the escape tunnel was supposed to be completed before the design process for the main tunnel ever began. The exploratory tunnel was awarded to a competitor with an separate contract.

The United States is totally dependent on imports for all primary chromite and most ferrochrome supplies. Although the United States imports chromite and ferrochrome from a number of countries, the long-term future of chromite supplies appears to lie in southern Africa (Republic of South Africa and Zimbabwe) where 88 percent of known world reserves exist. Floreover, low mining costs and the availability of low-cost electricity for ferrochrome production gives South Africa a comparative advantage over most other chromite and ferrochrome-producing nations. A well-known problem faced by the United States is that when viewed from a longer-term perspective, the major sources of supply of metallurgical grade chromite and ferrochrome may be subject to disruption. The three countries that have caused the greatest concern have been the Republic of South Africa, the Soviet Union, and Zimbabwe. South Africa presents a particularly difficult problem because it may be subject to internal political unrest and/or U. N, economic sanctions. South Africa has increased its share of world chromium production from about 30 percent in 1968 to 62 percent in 1978.1

"As the speed of business has continued to increase over the last decade, the focus on real-time control of the performance of both stationary and mobile assets has become an increasing priority. Traditionally the maintenance team has been focused on the management of the availability of assets while the operations team has been focused on the throughput of those same assets. Typically operations and maintenance teams worked almost independently in spite of the fact that they were both working with the same assets. Part of the problem has been their traditional performance measures which have often been diametrically opposed. Recent advancements in the area of real-time performance measures and decision support have helped to drive higher levels of collaboration between operations and maintenance leading to real-time asset performance control and higher levels of business performance. This paper will explore the forces driving the need for changes, present an effective approach to the definition of the most appropriate business performance measures, and examine the effectiveness of contextualized real-time decision support resulting in asset performance control. TRADITIONAL APPROACHES TO ASSET PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT In most industrial operations the phrase asset performance management is synonymous with maintenance of the industrial assets. This is the way industry has viewed asset management and asset performance management for decades. This is a very limited perspective that is serving to constrain the profitability of industrial operations. As industrial organizations began to form following the Industrial Revolution, the complexity of the operations forced an organizational design based on specialization. No single person could understand all of the aspects of an industrialized operation. This was particularly true at the plant floor level where the operation and maintenance of the industrial equipment required very different skillsets and training. To accommodate the vast differences most industrial organizations set up operations teams to run the equipment and maintenance teams to keep the equipment available to the operation. Both teams were dealing with the same industrial equipment but from very different perspectives and with very different performance measures. Typically the operations team was measured on maximizing the output of the equipment – or throughput. On the other hand the maintenance team was measured on the uptime – or availability of the equipment."

The globalization of mineral markets and intense competition in downstream mineral-consuming industries such as transportation, agriculture, and construction are requiring raw materials suppliers to innovate, improve quality, invest in new technology, and control costs. Mineral specifications are becoming more refined, and pressure to improve products is felt from increasing numbers of competing producers, substitute materials, customers, and regulators. As a result, engineered mineral products are becoming more like manufactured ones in terms of cost structure, differentiation, and the importance of market driven, customer specific product development. Engineered mineral products are defined as those where the costs of refining and upgrading outweigh those of conventional mining activities (blasting, crushing, classification, haulage etc.), and where close control of physical and chemical parameters is required for customers' processing and manufacturing applications. This includes industrial minerals such as calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, specialty oxides, talc, and some metal powders. It excludes most metals and bulk commodity materials such as gypsum, lime, sulfur, and soda ash. Engineered mineral products are utilized in common household goods, and are at the forefront of industrial materials engineering in plastics, ceramics, composites, glazes, coatings, and construction materials. As a group, they introduce interesting questions to the minerals firm. Advanced materials or basic? Diversify or specialize? What are the implications of advanced materials and for mineral markets, and most importantly, where can the producer look for long-term value, volume, and profits?

INTRODUCTION The Lake Merced Transport is being constructed as part of San Francisco's Clean Water Program. The Clean Water Program, which began in the early 1970's, is designed to control wet weather, storm sewage overflows into the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. To accomplish this goal, a system of large underground storage and transport facilities, pump stations, modernized treatment plants, and outfalls is being built. By 1991, eighty percent of the system had been completed and was in operation. One of the remaining projects for the Clean Water Program is the Lake Merced Transport. The Lake Merced Transport is located in the extreme southwestern portion of San Francisco, as shown in Figure 1, Project Location. The transport will convey dry weather flow from the existing Lake Merced Pump Station to the Westside Pump Station. During wet weather, the transport will fill with sewage and runoff, with a storage capacity of 36 million liters. The Lake Merced Transport was expected to be excavated entirely within the Colma Formation, an alluvial deposit consisting of weakly cemented sand. Once excavation of the access portal at the Sloat/Great Highway parking lot began, it became evident that a portion of the tunnel would be excavated through beach/dune sand. EPA's Office of Solid Waste (OSW) is developing a program, under Subtitle D of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to regulate the management of non-coal mining wastes. In May 1988. OSW produced a "Strawman", which is a working document that is precursor to a proposed rule. OSW has been working closely with environmental groups, industry, and States to solicit comments and feedback on the mining waste program. OSW currently plans to release a second "Strawman" in early 1990. A proposed rule is tentatively scheduled to be published in the spring of 1991.

The degree of fragmentation obtained in primary quarry blasting has always been a factor in the speed of digging' the muckpile This paper will discuss a case history of increased production and associated lowered costs from increased fragmentation. The quarry under discussion is fairly new, located in Georgia, and is in the large operation .category. Loading is done by three yard shovels, and, primary crushing by a 48" x 60" haw crusher preceded by a 5' wide feeder. The stone is a hard granite gneiss, of Los Angeles rating 22, and apparent specific gravity is 2.68. The product is shipped to points in that state for railroad ballast, concrete aggregate, and road building stone. Inasmuch as fairly large shovels and a large Jaw were to be utilized, initial drilling and blasting were pointed toward producing fairly large sized muck for this large equipment. This was following a concept somewhat in vogue for some years in the Southeast wherein many large equipment plants would tend towards larger fragmentation, and smaller equipped plants would conversely tend toward attempts at smaller sized rock piles for smaller shovels and crushers.

"During construction of a 9.5-ft. diameter sanitary sewer tunnel, the City of Edmonton encountered a large pocket of flowing sand that flooded their TBM and caused significant surface subsidence, stopping further tunneling by the TBM through this zone. A unique collaborative effort ensued between the authors representing the city, consulting engineers and academic researchers to develop the optimal strategy for grouting the problematic soils. The site has a layer of very find sand between 20 and 30 ft. in depth with fines contents ranging from 5% to more than 40%. The collaboration extended from requesting additional site investigation efforts to shipping samples to the UT-Austin laboratories for grout testing plus ground and grouting characterization tests resulting in field recommendations for a full scale ground improvement program. New research information on the grouting of fine sands along with a collaborative framework for the design of in-situ grouting projects are the key topics presented. INTRODUCTION Encountering a large unexpected pocket of flowing sand with an open-faced TBM while excavating a tunnel below the groundwater table is never a good thing. This was certainly true for the City of Edmonton when one of their Lovat TBM’s became inundated by flowing sand while excavating the 9.5-ft. diameter Millwoods Double Barrel Replacement Tunnel in September 2013. However, since the City of Edmonton self-performed this work, a rare situation existed where the site could be investigated objectively, without the prejudice of contending parties selectively influencing how information was gathered and presented, to accurately examine site conditions with a goal of identifying the best remediation measures."

Early history of the district is typical of many, particularly in Southwestern United States. The usual early Spanish influence was felt; Marcos de Niza, Coronado and Father Kino are most notable, but authentic records regarding Spanish mining activities are sparse. About 1769 the Indian village of Tucson became a Spanish settlement. During the next century prospecting attempts were largely interrupted by the Indian, Mexican and Civil Wars. By 1870 Tucson had a population of 3200 and by 1880 the Southern Pacific Railroad extended all the way from Los Angeles. Pyrometasomatic copper ore was first produced with some local direct ore smelting done during the late 1800s. By 1907, a rail line was built from the Twin Buttes mines to Tucson by the Twin Buttes Mining and Smelting Company. World War I was a very active period, with mixed copper, lead, zinc, gold and silver production. This came mainly from underground replacement and contact metamorphic deposits and from practically all portions of the district. Some of these operations continued intermittently until the 1929 depression.

The Twin Buttes Mine, one of the more recently developed large copper mines in the United States, is in the Pima Mining District about 25 miles south of Tucson (Figure 1). Other copper producing mines in the district are the Esperanza-Sierrita mining operations, five miles to the southwest and the Pima and Mission Mines, seven miles to the north. Copper metal production from the Pima District in 1974 totaled 276,728 tons and the Twin Buttes Mine's share was 46,473 tons or about 17%.' The district's copper production was 31% of Arizona State's production and nearly 17% of the production from the United states in 1974. The Pima District thus ranks as one of the major copper producing areas in this country.

Although the number of operating longwall mining systems has remained relatively consistent over the past five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. Longwall production currently accounts for approximately 50% of U.S. underground coal production. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems. This increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced. An improved understanding of the longwall face ventilation system and advancement of face ventilation technologies are necessary to ensure all face personnel are allowed to work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of airborne respirable coal mine dust. The Dust and Toxic Substances Control Branch of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has examined several basic principles of the longwall face ventilation system, and has evaluated the effectiveness of numerous improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall mining sections and investigating the fundamental relationship between face air flow and the entrainment and dilution of respirable coal mine dust. Studies have been completed to determine the impact on face dust levels from using belt entry air to ventilate the longwall. Novel methods have been identified to increase the amount of face air flow and to manage face air flow to most effectively minimize face workers' dust exposure. Unique systems of auxiliary face ventilation have been developed and evaluated at full-scale, simulated longwall test facilities. The theoretical and applied aspects of each of these principles and technologies are discussed. Application of these results, throughout the longwall mining industry, as documented from surveys conducted in the early 1980's and 1990's, have reduced the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.

"This paper presents the results of tests performed to study the effect of slurry solids concentration on the behavior of gas dispersion in industrial-scale mechanical flotation cells. The experiments were conducted at five concentrator facilities run by a Mexican mining company, specifically in the rougher bank of the lead/zinc flotation circuits. Those mechanical cells having significant contribution to the performance of the circuit, that is, the cells that enable high recovery, were characterized. The measurement protocol enables measurement of the superficial gas velocity, gas holdup and bubble size, and sampling of the mineral slurry. The measured data indicate that bubble size and gas holdup decreases as the concentration of solids increases. IntroductionThe process of mineral concentration by flotation is based on contact between particles and air bubbles, the selective adhesion of hydrophobic particles onto the bubbles, and the rising of the bubble-particle aggregates to the surface of the flotation cell to overflow over the lip to form the concentrate. It is now accepted that the physical and chemical process variables that control the flotation of hydrophobic particles are closely related to gas dispersion (Schwarz and Alexander, 2005). Gas dispersion is defined by the superficial gas velocity, Jg (Torrealba-Vargas, Gomez and Finch, 2006), the gas holdup, eg (Tavera, Gomez and Finch, 1997), the bubble size, d32 (Dobby and Finch, 1986; Gorain et al., 1995; Hernandez-Aguilar et al., 2004) , and the bubble surface area flux, Sb (Manqiu and Finch, 1989; Manqiu, Finch and Uribe-Salas, 1991). In recent years, the advances that have been made in sensor technology have enabled the characterization of gas dispersion in industrial flotation cells with excellent results (Gomez and Finch, 2007). This technology advancement has allowed the gaining of a deeper understanding of such complex mechanisms as carrying capacity (Yianatos and Contreras, 2010), collection efficiency (Gorain, Franzidis and Manlapig, 1997; Massinaei et al., 2009) and bubble coalescence (Finch, Nesset and Acuña, 2008; Zangooi, Gomez and Finch, 2010)."

"In recent years the fact that mining tailings cause serious environmental problems resulted in increasing number of studies about their disposal, storage and usability in various areas. Therefore the new studies about using the tailings for some purposes such as using in shotcrete or producing concrete have been increasing recently. The study is focused on applicability of tailings for producing shotcrete. Under this scope it is considered that mining tailings can bring many advantages in case of that they are used instead of sand, silt or fine aggregate in shotcrete applications. Most important advantages can be listed as decreasing shotcrete cost, decreasing amount if mining tailings to be disposed and the contribution to be provided on sustainable production of sources. The main objective of this study is the investigation of using mine tailing instead of fine aggregate in shotcrete. In this study, 10 shotcrete designs in different proportions were formed, and properties of the mixtures were identified. Then, the experimental results were statistically analyzed, the effects of the amount of the tailing material used on shotcrete properties were presented, and empirical approaches that can be used for the estimation of these properties were developed. INTRODUCTION The disposal of high amount mine tailing on the surface is caused a lot of problems in terms of environmental impact. Unfortunately, it is known that classic disposal techniques such as tailing dam cannot provide a solution these problems. The tailing dams which are usually used in the disposal of mining tailings bring along many problems in terms of cost, environment, and human health. So mine tailings are used in different production such as shotcrete. This technique is becoming increasingly common during recent years. The usability of mine tailings in brick and concrete production instead of cement and fine aggregate has been studied by many studies [1-4]. This situation has been promising for the usability of tailings in shotcrete which is commonly used for ground support especially in tunnels. Shotcrete (sprayed concrete) is applied mainly for construction of tunnels, shafts, renovation works and strengthening of slopes. Main advantage of shotcrete is fast development of strength, which quickly ensures stability of strengthened structure [5]. Shotcrete can be defined as spraying the grout consisting of water, aggregate, cement and optional additive mixture on the desired surface with a compressed air. According to the definition of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), it is the spraying of sprayed grout or concrete on a surface at high speed with air pressure [6]. In recent years, the use of shotcrete for the support of underground excavations is decreased in the mining industry. The design of shotcrete support for underground excavations is a very imprecise process. Strength and pumpability properties of shotcrete are very significant for determining suitable shotcrete design. Flow characteristics of the shotcrete must be determined for pumpability and fluidity of the material."
