The exploration for a commercially acceptable deposit of limestone is consid¬ered by many to be a relatively easy task; however, trying to locate a zone of high calcium limestone of economic thickness within a formation, which outcrops only in a narrow band varying in width from a quarter mile to ten miles, adds considerably to the normal problems experienced during an exploration program. The existence of varying glacial and karst features in the outcrop area intensified the problems encountered and complicated the interpretation of the economic value of the deposit. This paper highlights a recently completed five year exploration program during which approximately 3,900 acres of ground in seven civil townships were evaluated as potential sources of high-calcium limestone. Details are given with respect to the final site chosen and the methods used in determining the suitability of the site. This site exhibited many karat features and several methods were utilized to determine the effect of these features on the gross characteristics of the deposit. Aerial photography for both mapping and interpretation were utilized. Black and white panchromatic photography, black and white infrared and color infrared photography were flown. Resistivity, diamond core drilling and close-interval angering were used to supplement the information obtained from the aerial photography.

Hydrocyclone separators are widely used in various industrial applications in the oil and mining industries to sort, classify, and separate solid particles or liquid droplets within liquid suspensions, which are considered to be multiphase systems. Numerous valuable studies have been conducted in recent years to investigate the flow fields inside hydrocyclones. However, much of the information regarding the performance of cyclones in the literature has limitations and much of it cannot be considered as completely applicable to most real-world applications; many of the studies investigated the flow fields within extremely simplified hydraulic designs that are not representative of the complex geometries or large sizes which are typical in industry. Therefore, in this study, the two-phase flow system inside the actual hydraulic geometry of a milling circuit hydrocyclone is explored with the aid of both computational and experimental techniques (particle image velocimetry (PIV)). More specifically, the flow field with an air core has been investigated. In addition, the air-liquid two phases flow in a hydrocyclone might cause some challenges on both the computational and experimental sides. Two turbulence models are utilized in the numerical calculations: the Reynolds stress model and large eddy simulation. The computational studies are mainly focused on the local flow behavior and the prediction of the dimensions and shape of the air core. Different section planes of hydrocyclone are selected as planes of interest and divided into several fields of view (FOV) for PIV measurements. Two-dimensional experimental velocity vector maps are obtained in each of the fields of view. The computational results are validated globally using pressure and flow rate readings at the boundaries and locally by comparison to the PIV velocity vector maps and profiles.

The single line grinding circuit at Bond Gold's Colosseum mine consists of variable speed drive semi-autogenous (SAG) milling and secondary grinding with a fixed speed ball mill. There are several advantages and disadvantages of operating SAG mills with variable speed drives. Discussion in this paper will focus on the effects of variable speed SAG milling in relation to mill liner wear, grinding media consumption, and mill operating availability. Operating experiences, corresponding mill data, and pertinent design changes are also presented.

INTRODUCTION The use of precast concrete tunnel liners as the initial and final tunnel lining for transit systems has been a major consideration of designers for over three decades. The obvious benefit of building a tunnel that requires only a single pass in constructing the structural lining can provide the opportunity of saving both time and cost. This technique has had worldwide application in transit systems in London, Munich, Hong Kong, Toronto to name a few. In the United States precast liners were evaluated for use on the BART System in San Francisco in the early 1960's but did not provide sufficient confidence in the sealing capabilities available at that time. In 1976 it was decided to call for bids on the Lexington Market Tunnels in Baltimore with a precast concrete liner alternative for one of the tunnel drives. This option was selected by the owner and UMTA to provide a study evaluation for the benefit of the industry. HISTORY In 1983 Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority began calling for a series of bids on soft ground tunnels on the Green Line, which included the option of using precast concrete tunnel liners first as an alternative to fabricated steel tunnel liners. "When most people think “miner,” they picture an older white man in a dusty shirt and suspenders. He’s holding a gas lamp and a pickaxe, peering at the walls of a dimly lit cavern. This image, while steeped in heritage, is no longer representative of what mining is: a global, increasingly diverse industry.It’s an industry made up of individuals like Zambian-born Chushi Mwewa, PE, president of Southlands Engineering, LLC in the United States and managing director of Southlands Engineering Limited in Zambia; Navajo tribe member Peter Denetclaw, manager of environmental programs and Navajo relations at Freeport-McMoRan; and Chinese and Jewish Alyssa Hom, a project engineer at McCarthy Building Companies.According to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economics, 168 out of the world’s 195 recognized countries have some mining or mineral resources activity, and the mining industry directly employs more than 25 million people across the globe.However, according to McKinsey & Company’s 2017 “Women in the Workplace” study, white males hold 67 percent of C-Suite positions and 70 percent of senior vice president positions in the corporate world, and mining is no different. This uniformity among leadership has been tied to lower levels of employee engagement, innovation and business growth. The bottom line is this: Diversity is good for business. The question industry leaders must now ask themselves is not “Will we promote diversity?” but “How will we promote diversity efficiently and permanently?”More than 80 industry professionals, consultants and students gathered to discuss this question and share stories at the “Developing Diversity in Mining” workshop organized by the University of Arizona’s Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources (IMR), held during the 2017 SME Arizona Conference in December 2017.Brad Ross, co-director of the IMR and one of the facilitators of the workshop, said he felt diversity was important to discuss because he has witnessed its benefits throughout his career in the mining industry.“By creating a team of people with different experiences and perspectives, a company is better equipped to see the big picture and to creatively tackle problems,” he said. Speakers from industry and academia,including Mwewa, Denetclaw and Hom discussed the challenges surrounding achieving diversity and inclusion as well as the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders."

"This paper reports on computational and experimental research, performed at the Collaborative Research Center “Interaction Models for Mechanized Tunneling” at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. Research covers a broad spectrum of topics relevant for mechanized tunneling in soft soil conditions. This includes advances exploration methods and models for the characterization of the in-situ ground conditions, the interaction of the face support and the tail gap grouting with the porous soil, multi-scale models for the design of fiber reinforced segmental linings with enhanced robustness, computational methods for the numerical simulation of the tunnel advancement, the soil excavation and the material transport in the pressure chamber, logistics processes and risk analysis in urban tunneling.INTRODUCTIONMechanized Tunneling has proven itself as an economical and flexible construction method that continues to undergo a dynamic evolution process. Shield diameters continue to increase, and the application range of tunnel boring machines is being extended to an ever-increasing variety of geotechnical conditions. In order to maintain economic viability and to ensure an environmentally friendly construction process, realistic and reliable numerical models are required in order to make informed decisions during planning and construction. To provide a reliable numerical prognosis, it is necessary to accurately assess and understand the interactions between the components involved in mechanized tunneling with the surrounding site, the ground, and any pre-existing structures. Heterogeneous geological conditions and often only approximated ground parameters create, in contrast to other engineering projects, special demands. This necessitates new insights to new problems that can only be effectively solved through truly interdisciplinary research. To address these challenges, the German Research Foundation (DFG) has established the Collaborative Research Center “Interaction Models for Mechanized Tunneling” (SFB 837) at the Ruhr-University in Bochum in 2010. Collaborative Research Centers are interdisciplinary scientific research groups in which cooperative research is conducted under the umbrella of a central research theme. With a research budget of ca. 10 Million Euros for the second 4-year funding period, and a research team composed of 13 project leaders along with approximately 35 scientific assistants the SFB 837 is currently one of the largest research groups conducting fundamental research in tunneling related topics worldwide.RESEARCH TOPICSThe research topics of the SFB 837 encompass a number of relevant planning and construction related aspects in mechanized tunneling (Figure 1). These research themes are each supported by computational models and laboratory investigations and are all included in an SFB overarching Tunnel Information Model (TIM). Interaction groups integrate and combine the results of different submodels through prototypical cause-and-effect relationships, and through the analysis of the Wehrhahn metro line (WHL) project in Düsseldorf, which has been adopted as the reference project for the SFB 837."

A Norbridge review of 25 top mining companies highlighted financial problems for many firms. To better understand these results, Norbridge benchmarked 17 mining companies to understand the problems that companies face, the methods being used to improve performance, and the results that have been achieved. The study indicates that many mining companies in three sectors-coal metals, and non- metallic minerals-have implemented new strategies to improve performance. Many of these strategies supplement traditional initiatives with two types of process improvement efforts, facility-specific and company-wide, to help generate performance gains. The study compares the results of these strategies in each sector. INTRODUCTION imes are tough in the mining industry. Norbridge reviewed financial results of 25 top mining companies for the past 2 years-seven coal companies, twelve metals companies, and six non-metallic minerals firms.*The study found that 40% lost money in 2002, and * Coal companies include Alliance Resource Partners, Arch Coal, Consol Energy, Massey Energy, North American Coal, Peabody Energy and Westmoreland. Valdez Creek Mining Co. properties consist of multiple intersecting paleo-placer channels containing appreciable quantities of coarse gold. Reverse circulation drilling, combined with geophysics, is used for both exploration and development reserve determination. Classical drill-blast-load-haul open pit mining techniques used for the 22,000 cubic yard per day production schedule required modification to compensate for arctic winter operating conditions. High wall stability problems within the glacial sediment overburden necessitated developing multiple dewatering methods and variable pit slope designs to eliminate unstable pit wall conditions. Processing mine run fluvial gravels utilized a classical winter protected screening plant-sluice box recovery system enjoying high metallurgical recoveries and zero discharge tailings disposal.

The development of column flotation is the most significant achievement in the area of mineral processing in the last few decades. The high efficiency of column flotation allows a reduction in process time, a decrease in the number of cleaner stages and in the volume of the circulating load in the flotation circuit, and, as a result of this, an increase in consistency and reliability of operations. Unique multisectional column flotation apparatuses were developed. Such designs have a number of essential advantages as compared to monocells. A change from monocells to multisectional column allows to provide favourable conditions for separation of particles of various floatability. To attain that aim particular hydrodynamics and aeration regime is established in each section of the column, operational variables being adjusted according to the floatability of the material. Therefore in multisectional column machines the material-apparatus feedback can be established, process variables optimized depending on the characteristics of the floated materials. This concept forms the basis of column designs we have developed. For the first time column cell with alternating slurry Rows (combination of co- and counter-current flows) were developed and commercialized . Successful operation was reported of the new generation of columns with cell volumes of 10 to 80 m3 and the height of 4-6 m in copper, molybdenum, antimony, tungsten and nickel ores and coal slurry processing at different plants. Operation experience of these cells showed their considerable design and operational advantages and verified the proposed options and relationships. The new apparatus is provided with a pneumohydraulic aerator allowing to control bubble size distribution, the service life of the aerator is not less than two years. A multilevel flotation model was developed and used to work out a technique of column design and process parameters calculation. A method of the apparatus design parameters calculation based on laboratory test results (scaling up) was worked out. The method is based on flotation macro and micro-hydrodynamics simulation.

Copper concentrates are widely used in smelting operations worldwide and typically consist of chalcopyrite ( CuFeS2) as the primary mineral, with chalcocite ( Cu2S) and bornite ( Cu5FeS4) as secondary copper-bearing minerals. However, these concentrates often contain hazardous impurities, such as the fluorine ion, which can result in various complications during the smelting process. These issues include equipment corrosion, gas treatment requirements, environmental hazards, and strained community relations. Furthermore, high fluorine content in copper concentrates can lead to penalties and limitations during sales. To address these challenges, this comprehensive review assesses current techniques for removing fluorine from copper concentrate. Drawing upon recent research and the findings in the field, the review analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of existing fluorine removal methods and identifies critical issues requiring attention in the future. This review provides valuable insights into the current state of fluorine removal from copper concentrates and serves as a practical guide for researchers and industry professionals in this field.

A basic model has been developed to help assess methane control needs for longwall mining of coal in gassy areas. Rather than depending upon reservoir and rock mechanic theory, it uses an empirically-determined gas emission rate as an input and operates on the assumption that, within a specific region and zone, gas emissions will be relatively equivalent for uniform incremental volumes of gob created by mining. The computer program divides longwall panels into segments, keeps track of the face advance, and generates emission rates and volumes for both the entire panel and for individual zones within the panel by summing values for all undermined segments. This model can aid the determination of the number, size, and location of vertical wells or other methane control applications that are needed for gob gas control.

 This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology — thermal fragmentation — in narrow-vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation as well as one of an existing method used for narrow-vein mining. Comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs as well as increased productivity and ore recovery meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation.

The GRATE-KILN System plant at Svappavaara, Sweden, was constructed for LKAB by Allis-Chalmers under a turnkey contract and commissioned in 1969. The plant was designed to produce iron ore pellets from magnetite concentrate at 6100 mtpd using imported fuel oil. It represented the state of the art for plants of its type at the time. Fuel rated capacity was attained within one week of start-up. Product quality, power usage, fuel consumption and machine wear were within warranty limits during sustained production thereafter. As operator skills improved and gas handling system reserve capability was utilized, the plant frequently produced acceptable product at up to 115% of design capacity. During the period 1969 to 1976, market demands increased for high-quality pellets while energy costs rose steadily. At the same time, important advances in the design of GRATE-KILN Systems were being made in other plants constructed by Allis-Chalmers.

INTRODUCTION The early record of tunnel excavating machines in hard rock tunneling has not been one to particularly brag about. We have all heard the stories of major difficulties when trying to break hard rock with machines at promised advance rates of several times that of conventional drill and blast. Unfortunately, sometimes this has not happened. It has been through this trial of the past generations disappointments that today's TBM's have evolved to their present high level of performance in a wide range of ground conditions. Today's machines offer much increased reliability and durability. This translates into high availability to the tunnel contractor. Although there still are occasional disappointments being reported, the state of the art is that reliable and predictable machine excavation of rock now is both a reality and well founded expectation. The most recent editions of Atlas Copco's MINI/MIDI Fullfacer, we feel, make a strong contribution to the reliable performance of todays TBM's---especially in small-size rock tunnels. This report will, 1.) explain the equipment and effect of rock both on the cutting technique and machine performance; 2.) list advantages of the non-circular shape, during and after construction; 3.) list applications in civil and mining industries; 4.) discuss North American experiences, performance and costs; 5.) list advantages over drill and blast and; 6.) discuss briefly lease arrangements.

Underground construction is a matter of dealing with the inherent uncertainty of subsurface geology. If the encountered conditions are less favorable than the expected ones, the execution of excavation, support, ground treatment or lining works is likely to require more or different efforts than anticipated, thereby delaying the works and increasing the costs. The 2019 first edition of the FIDIC Emerald Book model contract (FEB) addresses many of the issues to which underground works give rise, including those related to differing site conditions (DSC). This paper examines how under the FEB disputes arising from or in connection with DSC could or should be avoided.

This presentation describes the operation and features of the WCC Carbon Reactivation Kiln. Particular emphasis is placed on minimizing carbon losses, corrosion resistance, fuel efficiency and the fate of mercury during reactivation in the multiple-tube vertical retort. Detailed laboratory work indicates that there is complete vaporization of mercury in the kiln, no refluxing in the upper sections and distinct advantages in using this type of kiln when sizing collection equipment.

The Pacific Northwest as defined in this review comprises an exceedingly large and geologically complex terrain that occupies the 'Western Cordillera mobile tectonic belt. This metallogenic province is approximately 2100 miles long and 350 to 500 miles wide. It extends north-northwest from northern California and Nevada, through western Idaho and Montana, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and southwestern Yukon Territory, to southern Alaska, and west from the western flank of the Northern Rocky Mountains to the continental margin (Fig. 1). Many detailed and thorough exploration programs that have been conducted by mining and petroleum companies for over a decade have demonstrated that porphyry-type deposits are both numerous and wide-spread throughout this province. Although the Granby Mining Company extracted about 34 million tons of copper sulfide ore from Copper Mountain during the period 1900-1957, intentional large-scale production of porphyry-type ores was first initiated in 1962. It began at Bethlehem Copper Corporation's East Jersey orebody in the Highland Valley District of south-central British Columbia, approximately eight years after Mr. H. H. Huestis rediscovered that broad zone of copper-molybdenum metallization and recognized its potential significance.

Fatigue-related risk is a persistent safety concern for the mining industry. However, fatigue and sleepiness are often treated interchangeably, which can lead to confusion and potentially less effective reduction of safety risk. To provide clarity, we present an overview of similarities and differences between work-related fatigue risk and sleepiness including definitions, theories, measurements, and mitigation strategies. As a supplement, a summative visual model which highlights these similarities and differences is presented. Expanding industry knowledge in this area will assist safety professionals in crafting more targeted risk management practices appropriate for work-related fatigue risk, sleepiness, or both.

In May 1975 the U. S. Bureau of Mines contracted with the University of Missouri-Rolla, Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center to develop a Hydrominer modification to a long-wall shearer unit, wherein the rotating pick-laced drums and connecting gear drives are replaced by a water jet cutting head.1 The concept of the water jet cutting head is based on using the high localized energy of the water jets to isolate a slice of coal by cutting a slot under, at the back of, and at the top of the web. The plow blade of the head then advances into the cut and wedges the pillar over onto the conveyor (Figure 1). There were several potential advantages foreseen for the system of which perhaps the most significant were the elimination of coal dust from the working area2 and the ability, with a variation in nozzle geometry, to cut webs of greater depth with a small increase in equipment horsepower. The University initially designed the head, based on experiments carried out in the laboratory, under an earlier Bureau of mines contract. The experiments showed that it was more advantageous to work at a pressure of 10,000 psi with an estimated flow rate of 50 gpm than go to the higher pressures and lower flow rates which have been advocated elsewhere.
