The purpose of this paper is to present a viable method of reinforcing rock pillars by utilizing fully grouted reinforcing steel and a cement - fly ash mortar. Although the fully bonded bolt concept is not new as exemplified .by the present widespread use of resin bolts within United States mines and by the use of cement grouted reinforcing used as back pins in the Kiruna Iron Ore Mine in northern Sweden, (1)(2) the method of stabilizing mine pillars with fully bonded reinforcing is new. This method, called the "grout-rebar system", was first incorporated at St. Joe Minerals Corporation's Fletcher Mine in December of 1972. The system was used on an emergency basis before extensive research on the mechanics of the system could be completed. Since December of 1972, however, approximately 206 pillars have been reinforced at Fletcher and the system is currently being used on a regular basis at two other St. Joe mines and at two competitor mines in the area. Basically, this paper is a case study of the efforts, research and results of utilizing the grout-rebar system, on a selective basis, at the Fletcher Mine. In addition to information about the system, this paper will explain in detail the three rock mechanics instruments developed by St. Joe and used to measure and monitor rock movement to validate the grout-rebar system.

One of the most difficult tasks a project manager will have in pre-mine planning is dealing with the mine site's hydrologic regime. Numerous federal statutes passed by Congress in the last decade have made the coal mining industry more responsive to the environmental impact during all phases of the mining process. Permitting these mines has dictated a cradle to grave approach in dealing with water related issues. This paper will attempt to explore the application of these technology- based laws and their direct application to the unique environment found in Alaska's interior regions.

Today's coal mines are turning more and more to belt haulage as the key system to transport coal out of the mine. The advantages of using belt for both intermediate and main haulage are numerous. Belts are reliable high capacity haulage mediums that can be utilized at low operating costs. They are adaptable to rolls in the coal seam and can handle relatively steep grades. They are not noisy, operate with a minimum amount of labor, and are easily extended and retracted. Belts require the least power of any haulage medium, are easily controlled by push- buttons and interlocks, and present low fire and safety hazards. Belt haulage can also be the largest source of operational problems for mine management when not installed correctly. This chapter and Chap. 6 concentrate on proper installation of both the static and dynamic components of efficient belt haulage. This chapter looks at the static system component, composed of the belt drive, its installation and operation, as well as belt takeup and transfer point construction. These components do not change readily over the life of the installation, hence the term static system. Chap. 6 discusses the dynamic system of belt line construction, which includes belt splicing, breaking down and reanchoring the tailpiece, and extending the belt line, plus operational and maintenance items for belt operation. This chapter is divided into three major topics. The first is a general discussion covering the points necessary for designing an efficient haulage system; the second looks at installing belt drives, head rollers, and takeups, and the third discussion centers on installing efficient and effective transfer points along the haulage system. Each will address the design and construction issues facing the engineer or construction supervisor in charge of installing the system. Before looking at the static system, it may be useful to review some of the basic design factors and considerations of all belt haulage systems. The material usually carried on an underground belt is a mixture of raw coal and rock, commonly known as run-of-mine (ROM) coal. This mixture has certain material characteristics that guide the mining engineer to the final and proper belt selection. The characteristics looked at most frequently are: 1) Angle of Repose is the angle at which the material will freely make a pile. Most ROM coal averages a 35"-39" angle of repose. 2) Angle of Surcharge is the angle a pile will assume on a moving conveyor. This ranges from 5" to 15" less than the angle of repose in most materials. For ROM coals, 25" is the average angle of surcharge. 3) Flowability, which determines the maxi- mum cross-sectional area needed to carry any given material on a belt. It is measured by the angles of repose and surcharge of a material and also serves as an index of the safe incline angle for the belt line. These characteristics, plus practical engineering research and development work are defined by an organization called the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) for most bulk materials. CEMA also provides a code for each classified material depending on the characteristics above and the subjective considerations of the average size to be encountered, the abrasiveness of the material, and any miscellaneous characteristics (oil resistive, corrosive, etc.) which may be important. This study investigated the operating parameters that affect the kinetic dissolution of copper and cobalt from sulfidic ores. The sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, sodium chloride concentration, particle size range, and leaching time were selected to deduce the kinetic mechanism of the leaching reaction. Other parameters, such as a stirring speed of 250 rpm and the percentage solid 10% w/v, remained constant. The results reveal that an increase in acid concentration enhances the leaching rate of copper and cobalt. Copper and cobalt dissolution was positively affected by the addition of sodium chloride. The highest leaching rates of copper and cobalt were 24.71% and 15.65%, respectively. The chemical control and diffusion control by shrinking core models are well fitted as the kinetic models representing the dissolution of the minerals. The respective activation energies for copper and cobalt dissolution of 10.92 and 31.023 kJ mol− 1 for the chemical control and 18.83 and 37.28 kJ mol− 1 for diffusion reaction control were established from temperature-based experiments.

Ore blending for process optimization is becoming an increasing factor for managing cost and productivity. Economic mining and processing a very low value ore in an extremely competitive market results in constant cost-cummng initiatives. The inherent conflict between the lowest possible mining cost and the lowest possible milling cost is reviewed here in the context of blasting for autogenous mills. Iron ore blending focuses on a number of properties-liberation values, weight recovery and concentrate silica being the most important. Other chemical and metallurgical factors are also commonly controlled. Recent research has fueled an emerging interest in blending on physical ore properties as well. Fully autogenous mills rely on the large, competent fraction of crushed feed to act as grinding media. Previous test work indicated that Hibtac mills require specific amounts of 6- to 10-inch ore. High recirculating loads require a steady influx of large rock fragments. Blast designs, therefore, are presently characterized by wide patterns and low powder factors. Current efforts are aimed at improving mill throughput while reducing overall energy costs. Based on research and published case studies and the advent of optical measuring devices, Hibbing Taconite Company has embarked on a blast optimization program to identify optimum mill feed and to design blast fragmentation goals for each geological unit and each mining area. This paper outlines the preliminary findings of an ongoing, broad-based team effort which requires close cooperation of geologists, mine engineers, crushing and milling personnel. Montana consists of an Archean crystalline basement overlain by Proterozoic through Cenozoic sedimentary rocks. Igneous rocks range in age from Archean to Pleistocene; the most voluminous magmatism and volcanism occurred during the Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary. The state can be divided into three tectonic provinces whose deformational styles are a function of different bedrock responses to Late Cretaceous-early Eocene compressional tectonism. Several long-lived structural zones have been periodically reactivated since the Precambrian, and were the sites of recurrent magmatism. Regional gold distributions are strongly influenced by the tectonic provinces and structural zones. Lode gold systems in Montana occur in diverse geologic settings resulting from a complex interaction between structure, magmatism, and sedimentary depositional processes. Reserves or resources are known for 19 significant lode gold systems, and additional unannounced discoveries have been made recently. Mineralization ranges in age from Archean to Tertiary. The influence of long-lived structures is apparent at both the regional and deposit scale, and in some cases multiple mineralizing events have been superimposed upon one another. Most Montana gold systems have a direct spatial and genetic association with Late Cretaceous through Oligocene igneous rocks. However, the importance of sedimentary rocks and associated depositional processes should not be underestimated.

This article advances an innovative concept explaining the connotation and technical system of "green" mining. The important theoretical foundations of "green" mining are the distribution and development characteristics of joints, fractures and bed separations, and the seepage and flow behavior of methane and water in the broken rock strata following coal mining. The main focus of "green" mining technique includes water-preservation in mining areas, coal mining under buildings with bed separation spaces grouted to retard surface subsidence, partial extraction and backfill mining, simultaneous extraction of coal and coal-bed methane, coal roadway supporting and underground disposal of rock waste, underground coal gasification, etc.

INTRODUCTION In the mining industry, timing in land acquisitions can be of the essence. In order to secure promising lands, deals are often negoti- ated quickly and evidenced by letters of intent containing what the parties feel are the essential terms of the deal. In some cases, a company is willing to acquire land only if it can lock up a number of promising properties, and so a "non-binding" letter of intent is used to formalize the essential terms, while leaving the company without legal liability. Later, the letters of intent will be sent to a lawyer to prepare a formal acquisition agreement. Many times, how- ever, especially in a land acquisition rush, another company will attempt to better the deal prior to the execution of that formal agreement, and the first company will be forced to rely on the initial letter of intent, only to find out to its chagrin that it has no deal In other cases, the company holding the desired property is another mining company, and the negotiation of an option or joint venture is the only way the first company can acquire an interest in the desired land. In order to make its offer more attractive, it may have to reveal confidential or proprietary information about the property or the surrounding lands. Here, too, letters of intent are often used to formalize the essential points of the agreement. Once again, however, prior to the execution of a formal joint venture agreement, the transaction may collapse and the letter of intent prove to be only that. The Greens Creek Ore Bodies are located approximately 18 miles southwest of Juneau, Alaska in an area on Admiralty Island classified as a non-wilderness national monument. An area-wide stream sediment geochemistry program targeted the deposit in October of 1973. Today, after 37,000 meters of combined surface and underground diamond drilling, three ore zones are known to exist with total reserves approaching 4.1 million tonnes. Lying within moderately folded metasediments of an undetermined age, these orebodies are thought to be of seafloor exhalite orgin and contain unusual and impressive amounts of gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper.

Construction of a Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory(DUSEL) is proposed under the auspices of the US National Science Foundation(NSF). DUSEL will provide scientists and engineers with a research facility capable of supporting a broad spectrum of fundamental and applied research deep in the earth’s crust. Research partners are physicists, biologists and geoscientists. DUSEL research calls for the construction of a network of shafts, tunnels and caverns that will provide laboratory facilities at depths of up to approximately 2 kilometers. The Project is still in the planning stages but, the initial experimental program is taking shape and conceptual designs have already been developed at two hard rock mine sites. This paper discusses the overall program and key engineering tasks being developed to support the construction of deep, large-span caverns. These caverns will house a new generation of physics experiments. As currently scoped, the experiments call for the excavation of permanent caverns with spans of up to 60 meters, sited at depths in excess of a kilometer.

At Lupin mine gold is spatially and genetically linked to zones of hydrothermal alteration in iron-formation which are symmetrically developed adjacent to late Archean quartz veins. Immediately adjacent to the veins, coarse grained, typically gold- and sulfide-poor, calc-silicate rocks are often present. These rocks comprise hedenbergite + quartz ± grossular garnet ± epidote ± scheelite ± calcite. Sulfides (pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and loellingite) and gold are concentrated in the next zone and occur with hornblende-rich rocks comprised of hornblende, quartz, hedenbergite and grunerite. Furthest from the veins are gold- and sulfide-poor, grunerite-rich iron formation comprising grunerite, quartz, hornblende and sometimes magnetite. Although the alteration assemblages have similarities with skarns, they develop in iron formation, and are at best indirectly related to intrusive igneous rocks. Geological and geochemical data clearly indicate the calc-silicate rocks are metasomatic in origin.

Carbothermic reduction kinetics of ilmenite concentrates catalyzed by sodium chloride and the microwaveabsorbing characteristics of the resulting reductive products were investigated; the reduction degree of the reaction was deduced to be . Results show that the activation energy is 112.03 kJ/ mol when NaCl is used as catalyst, lowering to 23.11 kJ/mol for the final stage activation energy using sodium silicate as a catalyst. There is a sharp change in the reduction rate constant at temperature ranges of 1,223 K - 1,273 K and 1,373 K - 1,423 K. Microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products were measured by the method of microwave cavity perturbation. It was found that microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products obtained at temperatures of 850° C, 1,100° C and 1,150° C show sharp changes. Through X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization, it was found that the formation of Fe occurs at a temperature of 900° C during the reduction process of ilmenite concentrate. The decrease of FeTiO3 content results in the decrease of microwave-absorbing characteristics, while the increase of Fe content gives rise to the increase of microwaveabsorbing characteristics. The decreasing trend is larger than the increasing trend, which is the main reason for the sharp changes in the microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products at the temperature range of 850° C to 900° C. When the decreasing trend is smaller than the increasing trend, it becomes the main reason for the sharp changes in microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products at the temperature range of 1,100° C to 1,150° C. Kinetics results show that sodium chloride can catalyze the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite, and microwave-absorbing characteristic investigations indicate that microwave heating can be used in the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite.

The deposition of metastable carbonate minerals in ar. aid, sheltered, coastal environment, leads to the formation of a flat, coastel, sabkha plain. The ground waters of the sabkha plain are modified by evaporation, precipitation of salts and reaction between ions in solution and the host carbonates. The resulting brine is similar to those found in fluid inclusions associated with Mississippi Valley type deposits. The aragonite and high magnesium calcite found in the sediments can concentrate lead and zinc from sea water. On diagenesis the lead and zinc are released into the sabkha brines.

Many solids processes that look feasible on paper or even in pilot studies become disasters in full scale. Changes in solids flow characteristics from pilot scale to full scale because of larger so lids contact pressures, thermal shocks or unforeseen temperature excursions often cause full scale solids flow problems not encountered in the laboratory or pilot studies. Fortunately, proper applications of solids flow principals and solids flow property measurement at full scale conditions can anticipate the problems and thus provide an accurate basis for full scale design or existing plant modifications.

Recurring movements remotely connected with the Murray fracture zone and the San Andreas fault complex, together with the slow northwestward drift affecting the Baja California peninsula, could progressively have accentuated the tensional situation already connected with the anticlinorium in southern Arizona. From the fragmentary data gathered on the Texas lineament, it appears that a very mild curvature, concave to the northeast, may be present along this belt throughout Arizona. Those localities where the successive changes in direc¬tion of the strands of the lineament belt seem to occur do generally coincide with intersections of both north-northwestern and northeastern breaks. It is along the outward, southern fringe of the belt (at such structural centers like Bisbee, Baboquivari, Ajo) that the greatest impact of regional movements could be expected to have occurred through tangential-torsional stresses. Although it si accepted that the north-northwestern and more particu¬larly the northeastern fractures in Southeast Arizona are propitious to or partially responsible for mineralization, it seems undeniable that the Texas lineament belt must have greatly increased the potentialities for ore throughout the Arizona copper province. While intrusive bodies occur near major intersections, with the Texas lineament belt as a common denominator, it seems, the ore deposits are to be found close to one of the intrusive stocks, varying in distance from contiguity (Bisbee) to one or two miles away (Silver Bell orebodies).

Three rock tunnel sewer systems are underway in the Chicago Area. (Figure 1) The three are designed to act independently and to be later connected to the future tunnels of the master plan. The tunnel excavation for each of the systems has been completed. One is in the Northwest area within the City being built by the City, known as the Lawrence Ave. System. Another is in the Southwest suburbs, known as the LaGrange-Brookfield Sewer or Southwest 13A, being built by the Sanitary District, the third is in the South suburbs called the Crawford Avenue sewer or Calumet 18-E, Ext. A- being built as a joint venture between the City and the District. The three are similar in that they have the same purpose, the same component parts and their tunnels were constructed in the nigaran limestone using a mechanical mining machine. The purpose of each of the systems is two-fold. First to provide flood relief for existing inadequate sewer systems, and second to reduce the pollution load to the waterways caused by combined sewer overflows. The existing systems in the areas to be relieved are combined sewers built many years ago. The main outlet for the Village of LaGrange, for example, was built in 1908, is badly in need of repair and lacks the capacity to handle the flood flow from the heavily urbanized area it now serves. On March 15, 2012, about 24 attendees from several western states attended Roundtable 2012, hosted by Knight Piésold and Co. at the Red Lion Hotel and Casino in Elko, NV. The focus of this year?s discussion was ?Acid Rock Drainage for Engineers and Environmental Scientists.? Other names may have been more suitable for the event, perhaps combining geochemistry, with air and water quality and their long-term effects on soil and rock mechanics. Bryan Ulrich (senior vice president, Knight Piésold?s Nevada operations) and Steve Lange (senior geochemist, Knight Piésold, Denver, CO), helped facilitate the discussion. Attendees included personnel from a dozen mining properties, various corporate offices and academia. There were also attendees from a geochemical testing laboratory to help respond to specific questions pertaining to testing protocol and procedures.

INTRODUCTION The process of mining removes valuable and eco¬nomically recoverable minerals from the earth. In the case of hard-rock mining, this process involves breaking and removing ore, while leaving the waste rock or host rock as intact as possible. Prior to mining, ground stresses exist in the ore and the host rock as a result of weight and tectonic forces; for the purposes of this chapter, the ore is considered to support the host rock on both the hanging and footwall sides. Two basic phenomena accompany mining. First, the hanging walls and footwalls tend to move together as the ore is removed. Second, high stress gradients de¬velop in the rock periphery of the opening; the magni¬tudes of the stress gradients vary widely, depending upon the local geometry and conditions. At various times, mining methods have used square¬set timbers, waste-rock backfill, alluvial sand fill, and tailings backfill materials, with or without cement, to replace the loss of support caused by the removal of the ore. Cut-and-fill mining has evolved to use hydraulically placed tailings for the backfill. In the stope, this fill provides massive support to the walls, thereby reducing stresses in the back. It also provides a floor from which men and machines can work to drill and blast, to haul ore, and to scale and bolt the back. In many cases, the addition of cement provides a competent free-standing wall when the fill is exposed during mining of adjacent stopes or during pillar recovery operations. In most cases, the use of fill does not eliminate standard tem¬porary or local roof control measures such as roof bolts and wire mesh. Fill Characteristics It is important that backfill used for ground support be of maximum stiffness in relation to wall closure. The stiffness of the fill is related to its placement bulk density or void ratio. In the case of cemented tailings, this is enhanced by the cement bonds. During stope closure, individual fill particles experience rotation and crushing at point contacts, but they are subject to little relative translation. The stiffness approaches infinity as the void ratio approaches zero, until the ground forces reach equilibrium, and closure stops. The gradation of particle sizes and minimal segregation resulting from good hy¬draulic placement both contribute to a high degree of early stiffness in the closure history of classified tailings backfill. This also implies that the fill should be resistant to creeping under high static loads. All mines experience shock loading situations such as blasting, and many mines experience rock bursts that can apply sudden and very high loads to the fill. Certain conditions of void ratio, particle size, and moisture con¬tent can result in mass fluidization of unconsolidated fill during such shock loading. Two key factors in avoid¬ing fluid behavior are the provision of a well-drained fill through desliming or classification and the achievement of a small degree of consolidation through the addition of cement in ratios as lean as 40 to 1 (2.4% cement). The acceptance of classified mill tailings as backfill material has been enhanced by its relative economy, including its source, preparation, delivery, and stope distribution. Transportation from the backfill prepara¬tion plant on the surface into the stope usually can be accomplished with low power consumption, with low labor costs, with few capital costs, and at high tonnage rates. An additional benefit is a reduction of the storage volume required for surface disposal of the tailings stream, with a resultant improvement in the environ¬ment. The costs of placing cemented tailings backfill generally range from $1.65 to $6.61/t ($1.50 to $6.00 per st) of fill depending upon the cement ratio used. Scope This chapter examines a major backfill program at a mine and mill complex where the backfill facilities are included as a part of the original planning. The backfill preparation plant is intended to make maximum use of remote controls and automation. The logistics asso¬ciated with material storage, handling, and metering in the plant are outlined. Important considerations in specifying equipment for typical service conditions are discussed. The fill delivery system is described, includ¬ing the boreholes, level lines, and stope distribution lines. Stope preparations for fill confinement and drain¬age are described, as are the techniques of placement and distribution. Methods of controlling and directing the flow of drainage water and slimes are presented, along with the facilities and equipment for clarification, pumping, and sludge removal. As shown in Fig. 1, the fill program encompasses most aspects of the mining and refining facilities, so the discussion is brief in each area. The preparation of backfill of a uniform and con¬trollable quality is presented here as a material handling problem. The balance of the presentation concentrates on the logic of the system, the costs where meaningful (in 1977 US $ unless otherwise specified), and some operating "tricks" that have contributed to system per¬formance and reliability. SURFACE PREPARATION PLANT A backfill preparation plant is required on the surface. This plant generates suitable fill material from the stream of mill tailings. Among the functions of the plant are: 1) Slimes are removed to improve the percolation characteristics of the fill; typically, particles finer than 325 mesh are removed from the tailings. 2) Tailings and sand storages are provided so that the steady stream of tailings produced by the mill can be accepted. Provision is made to accommodate the cyclic high-volume demand from the mine. 3) The plant stores the cement and contains meter¬ing and mixing facilities to provide fill of a controllable and uniform quality. 4) The hydraulic backfill delivery system is a part
